Metro Silences Beverly Hills During yesterday’s Metro Community Open House, Councilwoman Lili Bosse was denied the opportunity to publicly question Project Manager David Mieger about the Final Environmental Impact Report (EIR). In fact, when asking Mieger about parking near the proposed station, a Metro employee grabbed the microphone away from Bosse and told her that she, and everyone in attendance, needed to ask questions at the individual tables designed to focus on specific areas. “They didn’t want me to ask my questions,” Bosse told The Courier. The release of the Metropolitan Transit Authority's final EIR confirms its intention to tunnel under Beverly Hills High School despite the report's failure (see ‘OPEN HOUSE,’ page 9)

By Marla Schevker The Beverly Hills High School Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing and Civil (MEPC) investigation is 50 percent completed. The progress was presented to BHUSD staff Wednesday. The report discussed mechanical, plumbing, fire protection, electrical and civil problems throughout the school that will need to be addressed during the Measure E modernization. Superintendent Gary Woods said the full report should be completed in approximately 30 days. Woods said the MEPC report
is an investigation in preparation for the architects in either retrofitting or modernizing BHHS. “If you do a good job analyzing the MEPC’s, you have a better chance of the architects presenting documents that are accurate and completely understand the magnitude of what you have to do,” Woods said. Woods said there is extensive work that needs to be done on the BHHS campus and none of the results in the report thus far surprised him. The 50 percent completed (see ‘MEPC,’ page 16)
Drug Tests May Come to Beverly Hills High School By Matt Lopez Random drug testing could become a reality for student-athletes and performing arts students at Beverly Hills High School after the Board of Education broached the subject for the first time at its meeting Tuesday and took small steps toward developing a plan to institute a testing policy. While BHHS does conduct drug sweeps on campus, Board President Brian Goldberg said he brought the issue forward Tuesday because of concerns
about students leaving campus for a performance or sporting event while under the influence. Goldberg told the board he was approached by several students and parents close to both the athletics and performing arts programs who claimed students participated in both activities while under the influence of a controlled substance. From what he's been told, Goldberg said the issue has more to do with recreational drugs rather than any sort of (see ‘DRUG TESTING,’ page 9)

Astrology

Rexford Drive, Beverly Hills, CA 90210, will hold a public hearing to consider: A RESOLUTION OF THE PLANNING COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF BEVERLY HILLS RECOMMENDING THAT THE CITY COUNCIL ADOPT AN ORDINANCE AMENDING THE DEVELOPMENT STANDARDS FOR SINGLE FAMILY PROPERTIES IN THE CENTRAL AREA OF THE CITY AND AMENDING THE BEVERLY HILLS MUNICIPAL CODE The proposed Ordinance would amend the City of Beverly Hills development standards for single family properties in the central area of the City, including properties located south of Sunset Boulevard and some properties in Coldwater and Benedict Canyons. The amendments would (1) allow existing homes with non-conforming rear yard setbacks to encroach into a rear yard area, subject to a Central R1 Permit; (2) allow walls, fences, and hedges over three feet in height that are located in the required front yard area to be approved pursuant to the City’s Design Review Program (Article 44 of Chapter 3 of Title 10 of the City of Beverly Hills Municipal Code) when the home has architectural elements that project into the required front yard area; and (3) modify the development standards applying to corner lots located south of Santa Monica Boulevard which allow existing homes to encroach into the rear yard area, subject to a Central R1 Permit.
BEVERLY HILLS CANCER (June 22-July 22). You may be wondering how to find someone to sponsor your dreams. Take matters into your own hands for a while, and soon there will be people in your midst to help you take the next step. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Typically, a person is not aware of the process of self-discovery as it's occurring. You don't point out: “Wow, I'm learning this about myself right now.” Yet today you'll sense that something important is happening. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). The ones who think you are exciting are in for an even bigger surprise than they expected. You not only deliver on the thrills; you also challenge, push and encourage people to do more than they thought they could. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Matters of self-control will have a bearing on how things turn out today. You'll meld your particular brand of steely resolve with a certain novel interest. You'll seek what others aren't looking for and find it. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). A classic piece of culture will be a prominent influence on you now. Your opinion will echo age-old wisdom. Something that has been right for centuries will still apply now. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). You are such a strong and able person, it's highly unlikely, if not impossible, you would ever do something against your will, even under heavy persuasion or hypnosis. So trust yourself. That's the lesson of the day. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). You'll give in to the young and old, recognizing that they need you to bend the rules for them. The special care you afford the less able will add to your stellar karma. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). You see through the one who pretends to care, all the while noting that it's really not this person's fault. Being preoccupied with one's own life is not a crime, though it can be mighty annoying to others. PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar. 20). You think of your future in the present tense -- a most effective technique that comes naturally to you now, as you have one foot in the present and the other rather optimistic appendage in tomorrow.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING DATE: April 12, 2012 TIME: 1:30 PM, or as soon thereafter as the matter may be heard LOCATION: Council Meeting Room 280A Beverly Hills City Hall 455 North Rexford Drive Beverly Hills, CA 90210 The Planning Commission of the City of Beverly Hills, at its REGULAR meeting on Thursday, April 12, 2012, will hold a public hearing beginning at 1:30 PM, or as soon thereafter as the matter may be heard to consider: A request for a Variance to allow a Lot Line Adjustment between the properties located at 1141 Summit Drive and 1138 San Ysidro Drive. The Lot Line Adjustment would result in approximately 6,152 square feet of property being transferred from the property located at 1138 San Ysidro Drive to the property located at 1141 Summit Drive. The proposed Lot Line Adjustment would result in the property located at 1138 San Ysidro Drive being nonconforming with regard to minimum lot size and depth as set forth in BHMC §10-2-303, and therefore requires a Variance. The request is for a Variance for a Lot Line Adjustment only, and there are no new structures being proposed on either property in conjunction with this request. This project has been assessed in accordance with the authority and criteria contained in the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), the State CEQA Guidelines, and the environmental regulations of the City. The project qualifies for a Class 5(a) Categorical Exemption for minor lot line adjustments, and the project has been determined not to have a significant environmental impact and is exempt from the provisions of CEQA. to address any risk or issue raised by the Beverly Hills Unified School District of the city of Beverly Hills' experts. Those risks and issues include failure to make adequate safety provisions, poor investigation of alleged earthquake faults, inadequate engineering, failure to consider existing oil wells, failure to safeguard Beverly Hills High School and its students, teachers administrators during construction, and defective methodology in assessing the geology of the area. Despite these failures, the final report will go before Metro's Board on April 26 for approval. The crux of the dispute between Metro and Beverly Hills is the transit agency's determination to tunnel under Beverly Hills High School. That route was chosen despite higher ridership projections by Metro itself for a station proposed one block north in Century City, leading experts to contend that the decision was made to benefit developers in Century City. The newest Metro studies now contend this Santa Monica Boulevard station would have lower ridership than previously projected. No reason was given for the sudden change in ridership projections by Metro. Federal funding is heavily contingent upon projected ridership. Yesterday’s so-called “community open house” – ostensibly to allow concerned citizens an opportunity to speak directly with Metro representatives – contradicted the nature of what an open house is by not allowing public comments. Despite the rigged nature of the public relations event, leaders of the Beverly Hills community including Board of Education member Lisa Korbatov and reform City Council Members John Mirisch and Lili Bosse, joined by dozens of community members, demanded a chance to speak. Metro claims that “earthquake faults” along Santa Monica Boulevard require locating the Century City subway station on Constellation and Avenue of the Stars, not on Santa Monica Boulevard as longplanned. Experts for the Beverly Hills Unified School District have been conducting extensive trenching in the areas affected – trenching not done by or for Metro – which so far have contradicted Metro's findings. Experts hired by the City of Beverly

steroids or performance enhancers. "I'm not insinuating that there's a higher rate of drug abuse or drug use by either of those groups," Goldberg said. "I selected these programs over random drug testing throughout the high school because of cost and because of the nature of these programs, particularly with them leaving our campus and representing us offsite on a regular basis.” The board directed Superintendent Gary Woods and his staff to research school districts with random testing in place and report back to the board with his findings. Woods told The Courier he expected to have information to present by the next Board of Education meeting on April 24. Board VP Jake Manaster said he wasn't sure if focusing the testing on a specific group was the right course of action. "I can't see myself supporting random drug testing on a group of individuals; it would have to be the entire campus," Manaster said. Manaster raised questions about the legality of a random drug testing policy, but that likely won’t be an issue at all for BHUSD after a 2002 ruling by
March 30, 2012 | Page 9 Hills, Exponent and Shannon & Wilson, even relying on Metro data suggest Metro could safely build on Santa Monica if the station was moved slightly west. They also reveal that the proposed Constellation Station location was not thoroughly studied. Methane gas explosions were reported in the vicinity of the Constellation station location during previous construction in Century City. City of Beverly Hills experts called for additional studies to ascertain whether Constellation Avenue is affected by faults or methane. Not discussed was property acquisition and easements. If the subway were to tunnel through Beverly Hills, 75 homes and 21 businesses would suffer permanent easements for the tunnel. To build a station at Wilshire/La Cienega, Metro would need to purchase six properties including a six-unit apartment building at 111 Gale Dr. To build a station at Wilshire/Rodeo, Metro would need to obtain seven properties including New Pacific Realty at 9397 Wilshire Blvd. and Ace Gallery at 9430 Wilshire Blvd. Metro's own explanations -- published in today's Courier -- call for open trenches along nearly the entire length of Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills to build the stations for the subway. Construction would last between five and seven years. Stations are not tunneled but are built using “cut and cover.” In other words, the entire underground area is excavated from the surface, the station is then built and the entire excavation is covered up again. Metro will hear comments at its Planning Committee meeting on Wednesday April 18 at 1 p.m. or at the Metro Board of Directors meeting on Thursday, April 26 at 9 a.m. Written comments can be mailed to David Mieger at Metro, One Gateway Plaza 99-22-5, Los Angeles, CA, 90012. Online comments can be submitted at www.metro.net/westside, or by e-mail to WestsideExtension @metro.net. All written input should be received by April 23. The Metro Board will consider approval of the final EIR/EIS following the public review period at its meeting on April 26. The Courier attended the Community Open House in Westwood on Wednesday evening. As of press time, the MTA Beverly Hills “open house” was still in session. The Courier will file a complete report through the end of the MTA meeting on www.bhcourier.com tonight.
the U.S. Supreme Court in the case of the Board of Education of Independent School District No. 92 of Pottawatomie County v. Earls. In that case, the Supreme Court ruled a district policy which required students participating in extracurricular activities to submit to random drug testing is constitutional. Oceanside High School is one of a number of schools requiring random drug testing in California. Tim Ware, the school intervention manager for the Oceanside Unified School District, said Oceanside's program started in 1998 and when its federal grant expired four years ago, parents and students pleaded with the school board to continue the program. In response, Oceanside's school board began funding the program to randomly test athletes and cheerleaders, at a cost of about $5,000 per year. Ware said Oceanside’s policy, which was adopted after studying schools in Texas, calls for the student to sit out one game and attend a six-week counseling course after a failed test. A second failure is a week of missed athletics and counseling at the expense of the student’s family. Ware said two failed tests are extremely rare.

A FABULOUS ACTOR, A FABULOUS BOOK T
o put it bluntly, Frank Langella’s justpublished memoir, Dropped Names: Famous Men And Women As I Knew Them, blew me away. I loved this book, and if you love finding out what celebrities are really like, you will too.
R
ather than tell his life story in chronological order the way most people do, this great stage actor has chosen to recount the stories of his encounters with more than 60 of the most famous people in the world—each dead and written about “in order of disappearance.”
If this sounds morbid, it isn’t.
Far from it. These are not obituaries. It is a stunning collection of keenly observed, remarkably revealing, sometimes heartbreaking tales recounted by a master story teller who possesses what appears to be a breathtaking sense of recall.
"I
admit my stories are most likely prejudiced, somewhat revisionist, and a tad exaggerated here and there. But were I offered an exact replay of events as they unfolded, I would reject it. I prefer my memories," he writes. "I didn't always like some of my subjects, and I'm quite certain some of them
found me less than sympathetic. There will be a fair amount of forks to the eye and knives to the throat."
Y
ou’d think from these comments that Dropped Names would be filled with meanness, but it isn’t. Frank’s book is permeated with love. Nevertheless, he does sock it to the vain, the foolish and the self-serving.
H
ere’s a quick look at Langella’s nuisance laundry list: • “Angry baby” Anne Bancroft (Frank’s remark about Bancroft’s horrible behavior is one of the scariest things I’ve ever read) • “Crashing bore” Richard Burton • “Real son of a bitch” and “resolutely homophobic” Rex Harrison • “Weak piece of wood” Charlton Heston • “Silly old English gent” Laurence Olivier “who loved to play camp and gossip” • Beautiful and dull “like the Statue of David” Paul Newman • “Complete charlatan and self-serving martinet” Lee Strasberg
Langella—part Shakespearian and
part street stud—really is one of our greatest living actors. He has turned Broadway on its ear as the sexiest Dracula imaginable, scored three Tony awards: for Edward Albee’s Seascape, Turgenev’s Fortune's Fool, and his astonishing, agonized portrayal of Richard Nixon in Frost/Nixon. But who would have known that he was such a superb writer?
T
here are so many little moments that I love: • Maureen Stapleton saying of Lauren Bacall, “I stay out of her way till they feed her.” • Loretta Young spending a half-hour on her hands and knees tracing his stage costume so she can have a copy made. • Yul Brynner telling Frank an audience was “shit. I would not bow. I gave them my ass.”
Astor) and the women he bedded and loved (Rita Hayworth, Elizabeth Taylor, Jackie O., etc., etc. etc…).
T
his guy has had one helluva life, and he shares it with us. (May I add that I think the accuracy of Frank’s recollections is uncanny. Two of the people in the book, Coral Browne and Roddy McDowall, were dear friends of mine, and I knew many of the others, and Frank captures them perfectly.) Dropped Names deals with truths about celebrities that many people have never dared to talk about before.
B
elieve it or not, I’m a very shy person (who cares), but with all the new, fresh anecdotes from Dropped Names in my head, I am planning to shine at many-a-dinner party this summer. Buy it, read it, and you will too!
D
ropped Names starts with Frank as a 15-year-old boy, “a small, skinny kid in hornrimmed glasses, born into a middle-class Italian family, feeling always as if I didn’t belong.” In later life he accidentally comes face to face with Marilyn Monroe on a Manhattan Street, and Monroe whispers “Hi” to him. He chronicles his adventures with her, along with the incredibly famous (Noel Coward, Richard Burton, Yul Brynner, Bette Davis), the incredibly rich (Bunny and Paul Mellon, Brooke

L.A. Jobs Recovery Not Expected Until 2016 By Laura Coleman On Wednesday, the UCLA Anderson Forecast tackled the thorny employment issue, predicting that Los Angeles’ job recovery would take at least nine years to reach 2007’s pre-recession level. “Los Angeles job recovery will come sowly,” Forecast Economist William Yu told the real estate industry professionals who had gathered for the morning conference. As the shared epicenter of the subprime mortgage crisis with its neighbor Orange, Los Angeles County is still working to cycle displaced employees back into the workforce. According to Forecast Director Edward Leamer’s research, 2 million manufacturing workers and 2 million construction workers have been permantently displaced. Current unemployment is over 12 percent in Los Angeles compared with 8.3 percent nationally – a percentage the Forecast doesn’t anticipate Los Angeles will achieve before 2014. “We had a very severe recession this time,” Leamer said, calling the recovery the worst since the Great Depression. While there are multiple hopeful indicators on the horizon, including the impending stabilization of the housing market as prices bottom, the Forecast economists cautioned that real estate industry professionals ought “curb [their] enthusiasm” about the imminent future of local job growth. In addition to increasing challenges facing the global workforce as a byproduct of machines replacing human beings, one of the more alarming
trends the Forecast noted was the decline in employment among the younger workforce. With access to important first jobs drying up for youngsters, a likely consquence will be that finding talented individuals with diverse experiences will become increasingly challenging. Keynote speaker Caroline W. Nahas, managing director with executive search firm Korn/Ferry International, said the current job challenges are deeper than anything she has experinced in her 30-year career in the employment industry. “What we see with so many executives is that they have not had enough different and new experiences from which to draw,” she said. “The learning agility is the biggest and most important thing we look at.” During a panel discussion on forces determing job creation and destruction, Empowered Careers CEO Steve Poizner said that the 3.5 million job openings currently available across the nation underscored how critical it is for people to diversify their job experiences. “There’s a fantastic opportunity to link people up...but it does require some rewiring,” he said. In addition to jobs in the industrial and financial sectors, Nahas said one of the major growth areas she was seeing was in consumer products. “People want to look better, they want to feel better, and they want to live longer,” she said citing Botox-manufacturer Allergan’s double digit growth for the past three consecutive years. “Consumer health services is going to be a huge area.”

PLANNING COMMISSION (Continued from page 5)
“Each application to build in the proposed Overlay Zone will be reviewed by the Planning Commission in a public hearing at which time we will determine how well each of the Zone’s objectives are being met,” he explained. Yukelson said one of the principal goals for the Overlay Zone is to redevelop all of the properties involved and to encourage the three principal applicants to joint venture with or purchase the commercial properties fronting South (Little) Santa Monica Boulevard that they currently do not own. “With the finalization of the proposed Overlay Zone for these parcels, we will have the opportunity to recreate this area of the City into a beautiful and iconic gateway,” he said. Also during the meeting, the commission finalized the Trousdale View Restoration Guidelines which are expected to quell complaints on the view obstruction issues. “I understand that staff has already received some calls from Trousdale residents about the Ordinance, and in at least one case, a City Advisory Opinion has been requested,” Yukelson said. “It is our extreme hope that through this process, residents can amicably and quickly solve their view restoration issues.”

Fahn spoke briefly at the meeting and stressed the importance of avoiding hyperbole when demonstrating opposition to Metro. “Stick with facts, get educated and ask questions,” Fahn said. “If we're going to take positions on behalf of the school district, it should be factuallybased.” PTA Council Co-President Susie Roberts said production of the materials, which will include banners and signs, will begin shortly.. Roberts said she hoped copy for the signs and banners would be decided on by today. The plan is to post a banner at each school site and possibly wield the signs outside of MTA board meetings. “They need to hear us and address our concerns,” Roberts said.

MEPC (Continued from page 1)
MEPC report showed the campus needs countless upgrades such as piping, plumbing and electrical work. According to the civil survey, there are corroded cast iron pipes that should be replaced, the storm drain accessed from the roof drain cleanout needs to be replaced and the storm system needs to be hydro scoured to remove roots and other debris. To improve plumbing, the sanitary sewer, waste and vent piping need new cast iron pipe and fittings; exposed black steel gas piping needs to be replaced with galvanized steel pipe and fittings and earthquake-actuated gas shutoff valves need to be installed. While some heating,
venting and air conditioning units are still usable, the existing cooling tower in building A needs to be cleaned and the existing exhaust fan on the western portion of building E needs to be replaced. This upfront work will determine the cost and appropriate steps needed to refurbish and modernize buildings on the high school campus, Woods said. “We are beginning to have a very clear picture of the weakest links at the facility,” he added. “The entire facility is in need of some major renovations and the MEPC [report] supports that. All of the information we’re getting is consistently telling us we need to act and we need to act quickly.”

I believe that it’s important to give back when you have received so much.” Part of a centuries-old tradition of recognizing eminent scholars, chairs provide a permanent endowment or perpetual grant to support the work of professors and their successors thereafter. The Edward G. Lewis Chair in Law will become part of Staudt’s official title. Staudt, a nationally recognized tax and tax policy scholar, joined the USC Law in 2011. She has published extensively on the tax and tax policymaking decisions that take place in both the legislative and judicial branches of government, including the recent The Judicial Power Of The Purse: How Courts Fund National Defense
In Times Of Crisis (Chicago University Press 2011). Staudt is in the process of completing a book with two colleagues on the “Judicial Business Cycle,” which examines how and why economic conditions affect judges’ votes and case outcomes, and is finishing a project on the application of judicial anti-abuse doctrines in the corporate tax shelter context. “I am so honored to be the inaugural holder of the Edward G. told a group of current and potential donors last Friday at an intimate luncheon hosted by Boardmember Jamie Meyer and her husband Chuck in their Bel Air home. Originally formed in 1946 as a response to Europe’s devastation, the United Nation’s Children’s Fund is today active in 150 countries and territories in helping children have access to essentials such as clean water, adequate food and basic healthcare, in addition to working to prevent child abuse and exploitation. As the economy putters toward recovery, philanthropic support is critical for organizations such as UNICEF - particularly as government funds, from which the charity draws 60 percent of its funding, get tapped out. According to Regional Director Anne Kelly, with more funds UNICEF can curtail the “preventable” deaths of 7 million children annually. “This is the best use of people’s money,” said Jamie Meyer, who in concert with her husband have been donors since 2008. “It’s ridiculous how easy it is [to make a difference by simply donating to UNICEF.]”

Bibigo Brings ‘Fresh & Healthy’ Korean Cuisine To BH lobal Korean restaurant brand, CJ Corporation is officially opening its second U.S. branch in Beverly Hills on April 2, marking the 12th Bibigo location globally. CJ operates eight restaurants in South Korea, and one each in Raffles City, Singapore; Westwood and Beijing. Bibigo is a Korean restaurant with a “fresh &healthy” concept delivering the beauty and taste of Korean cuisine with its traditional dish, Bibimbap. The menu gives customers the freedom to choose their portions and different types of rice, sauce, and topping. Bibigo is not just an oriental food business, but a casual restaurant that meets the current culinary culture in terms of taste and trend. Bibigo expanded its menu selections by innovating the Rice Salad dish to widen its consumer range. Using the South Beach Diet (balanced diet of vegetables and carbohydrates), Bibigo introduced the Korean cuisine culture to American consumers with this new, healthy, yet trendy cuisine. “It is a privilege to launch Bibigo in Beverly Hills, home to the entertainment industry and one of the most affluent cities in the country,“ said CJ Foodville’s Korean Cuisine Team Leader Han Geun Kwak. “I expect this to be an opportunity to showcase the Korean cuisine and culture for celebrities and visitors to the city.”

With its clean, modern interior layout and a competitive prices, this Bibigo location will take a slightly different strategic approach from the Westwood restaurant, which mainly targets UCLA students with a QSR

The Bibigo menu is centered around Bibimbap varieties, such as Bibigo Rice, Bibimbap, Stone Pot Bibimbap, and other authentic Korean tapas dishes. On the beverage menu are Korean raspberry wine, rice wine and other traditional wines, as well as varieties of soda. In addition to its current establishments, Bibigo plans to launch 17 branches globally by the end of the year. CJ Foodville is currently researching market trends in Japan, China, England, and other key market nations to uphold its global mission. The restaurant is focused on diversifying its menu offerings, strengthening its customer service, and advancing its employee training to further expand its premium image to its customers worldwide. Recently, Marja Vongerichte, wife of the globally known chef Jean Georges Vongerichte, and actress Heather Graham dined at Bibigo and lauded its Bibimbap. During their 13episode show Kimchi Chronicles (PBS), both said, “Bibimbap is not only colorful in its recipe arrangements, but is also an excellent, healthy cuisine.”

Dr. Lobe Takes Healthy Approach To Aesthetic Procedures r. Lobe says his goal is to help patients look great and feel great. Using his Healthy Aesthetics approach, Lobe considers a patient’s entire state of health before performing any procedures. “Everything I do is going to work better and last longer,” says Lobe. “If I just perform procedures, everything I do will not work as well as it could.” If patients are going to make the investment, he wants to make sure they get the best results for their money. A board-certified surgeon for 30 years and an anti-aging expert, Lobe began his career working with children and infants. He researched why they heal so well; and after years of studying how children grow, develop and heal better, he knows how to help people look and feel more youthful.“As far as I’m concerned anti-aging medicine starts when you’re born,” says Lobe. “We truly can make a difference in how we age—it’s not magic. With proper nutrition and lifestyle we can improve longevity, look and feel better, and have better sex.” For Lobe it’s a matter of understanding what a patient needs. “If a patient comes in and says he or she’s not feeling well, we may ask for a number of tests and look at how your body works at a genomic and physiological level.” These tests include measuring hormones, such as the thyroid and sex hormones; we look at glucose levels and how efficiently the individual’s metabolism works. "And then we start looking deeper.”
D
As a doctor trained in naturopathic and conventional medicine, Lobe also wants to know what his patients eat and how they process their food. “Twothirds of anti-aging is proper nutrition,” Lobe says. People can’t get all the nutrition they need from what they eat, even fresh out of the garden, says Lobe. So he often custom prescribes an assortment of vitamins and supplements that meet the individual’s need. Then, when he sees improvement in levels he adjusts their prescription accordingly to achieve the optimal anti-aging effect. He works with Dr. Rex Wilson, the longest practicing naturopathic doctor in California, and often prescribes Nutrition Therapy, delivered through an IV, especially before a treatment. “If patients are properly nourished, they heal better and with fewer complications so the results are better.”Lobe has always been a student of what’s new and what’s better. “I never accepted from my teachers the way you should do things,” he says. “I remember teaching a resident a procedure and I said, ‘why are you doing this differently? We’ve done this procedure a thousand times and we always do it the same way.’ And he said, ‘You’re wrong, Dr. Lobe. You never do things the same way; you’re always making them better.’” Dr. Lobe is respected as a world leader in innovative surgical techniques and has written more than 200 books, book chapters, and peer-reviewed articles in his field.
Lobe is at the forefront of state-ofthe-art therapies, always seeking the best, most innovative, therapies for his patients. Some of his tools include: • Stem cell therapy that takes fat cells from the abdomen, which are then mixed with platelet-rich plasma and used to restore the face. Adding the stem cells (500 times more concentrated than from marrow) and plasma enhances the viability of the fat and gives a more long-lasting and youthful result. Most surgeons, Lobe says, just cut off and tighten skin. But the stem cell facelift affects the soft tissues in the skin and the bone underneath. “It doesn’t just fill in the gaps, but helps with sunken tissue around the eyes and temples, and marionette lines.” Stem cells can also be injected into the joints to treat arthritis and tendonitis. “What we’re doing is safer than using steroids,” Lobe adds. Dr. Lobe took a sabbatical from his regular practice last year to pursue studies in stem-cell research and innovative ways to solve the problem of teenage obesity. On the horizon, says Lobe, is the ability to take an individual's own stem cells, culture them every month, and create the ultimate in customized skincare products. • For the body, Lobe offers PureLipo, which is different from “standard” liposuction procedures. Performed with a hand-guided wand under local anesthetic, it brings “a nice
smooth contour,” Lobe says. “I have patients who say, ‘I haven't seen my waist in 20 years.’” —Exilis uses radio frequency to remove the triglycerides from fat cells. The radiant energy drives the fat from the cells, and the wand can be used on arms, legs and the face to get rid of wrinkles and stretch marks and tighten skin. —CelluPulse 2000 uses acoustic wave therapy, much like that used to break up kidney stones, to treat cellulite. “It really breaks up the fat cells and reorganizes the collagen,” says Lobe. As a bariatric doctor, Lobe also works with patients who are 100 pounds or more overweight, struggling to lose weight, and who don’t want a gastric bypass or lap-band surgery. Patients come in and, under local anesthetic, Lobe can remove eight pounds of fat from the front of the body. A few days later the patient comes back and eight more pounds are taken from the back; so the patient loses 16-20 pounds in one week. According to Lobe, the rapid and large weight loss kick-starts the metabolism and lowers inflammatory markers without changing diet or lifestyle. “So most patients keep on losing weight,” Lobe said. When asked summarize the philosophy of his practice, Lobe says: “I want all my patients to look and feel young – I want them to do the things they want to do for as long as possible—and they can!”

hat’s the basic philosophy behind The Center for Medical Weight Loss in Beverly Hills? We customize weight loss treatments on an individual basis. Based on the patient’s history and examination, motivation and finances we will tailor a program geared toward the long-term success of the patient. Whether you need to lose 10 pounds or 50-plus pounds there is no better way to lose the weight than under the supervision of a physician. Whether your weight gain is related to a pregnancy, menopause, genetics or the everyday stresses of daily life, The Center for Medical Weight Loss is there to help you lose the weight. Is The Center for Medical Weight Loss (CMWL) program safe? The Center for Medical Weight Loss programs are safe and effective. Many health-care complications associated with being overweight such as high blood pressure and diabetes can be reduced or even eliminated when losing weight on a CMWL program. Dr. Bereliani will monitor your medications and adjust accordingly as you lose weight on the program. In addition, CMWL weight loss programs can help alleviate many other conditions resulting from obesity, including arthritis, coronary artery disease, sleep apnea, persistent lymphedema (swelling in an arm or leg), lower extremity edema (abnormal accumulation of fluids), hypertension (high blood
W
pressure), and high cholesterol. How is CMWL different from other weight-loss programs? There are two primary differences with CMWL compared to other weightloss programs. First, our weight-loss program is supervised by Dr. Bereliani who has received extensive training in the medical science of weight loss. Dr. Bereliani can treat your weight within the context of your total health profile. As a physician, Dr. Bereliani has the tools and resources other programs do not, such as the ability to adjust medications hindering your weight-loss progress. Second, Dr. Bereliani does not focus on just one aspect of weight loss. He takes a comprehensive, holistic approach that includes food, exercise, and behavioral modification. Weight loss and weight maintenance is a way of life. Dr. Bereliani provides the continuous support necessary so that his patients have the greatest chance of succeeding long term. What happens after I lose the weight? After you reach your goal weight on The Center for Medical Weight Loss plan, you’ll enter the Maintenance Phase of the program. Dr. Bereliani will give you the necessary tools to help you maintain your weight loss and ensure you have the best healthy eating, exercise, and behavioral strategies to keep the weight off – for good. Dr. Bereliani remains dedicated to his patients and helping them achieve their optimal health.

Page LGFG4 Permanent Pain Relief From Vascular Pain Without Surgery ain that results because of inadequate or absent blood supply is called vascular pain. In most cases this will present as leg and foot pain. Their feet hurt as soon as someone starts walking. Any exercise requires additional oxygen to the exercising organ as oxygen requirements are increased several fold during the exercise. In a normal person, this additional oxygen is delivered by improved blood flow to the exercising organ. Legs that already have reduced blood supply because of poor circulation can’t keep up with the oxygen demand, resulting in severe pain that reduces as soon as walking stops. Calf muscles also frequently hurt when there is poor blood supply, a symptom known as claudication. There are many reasons for vascular pain because of poor blood supply. In younger patients this is almost always because of smoking that leads to constriction of blood vessels. In the elderly, it is due to thickening of the inner wall of the blood vessels making it difficult for blood to flow through them. As time passes without identifying the vascular pain, more serious effects result. The feet and toes become black as they start to die away, a process called necrosis. Necrosis results from loss of nutrition to the tissues which again is dependent on blood supply. As necrosis spreads, the whole foot may die away until treatment is given.

Vascular pain will not respond to treatments if smoking is not stopped, so this should be the first step. Commonly vascular pain is treated with surgery. The diseased blood vessel is identified and is replaced by an artificial blood vessel called a graft. This surgery is not without complications. Long-time results are poor. Most cases end up in graft occlusion, making no room for any more surgery. Amputations of the extremity are used when there is no salvageable tissue left that may benefit from return of blood supply. Amputations are done above the dead tissue which may be toes, feet or higher levels where healthy tissue remains. What are the alternatives to surgical treatments? What Metro, Itself, Says

Editor’s Note: “Cut and cover” station construction will run for nearly a mile on Wilshire for five to seven years. Background Planning and environmental analysis studies for the Westside Subway Extension (Project) were initiated by Metro and the Federal Transit Administration in late 2007. This effort began with the initial Alternatives Analysis Study (AA) in 2007-08 and was followed in 2009-10 with the Draft Environmental Impact Statement/Environmental Impact Report (Draft EIS/EIR). Metro is currently preparing the Final EIS/EIR. These combined efforts have included in-depth study and analysis of various transportation modes, alignments and many other technical issues. As the environmental process is concluding, and with construction potentially beginning as early as 2013, this fact sheet is intended to summarize the subway construction process. Construction Overview There are two basic elements of subway construction – building the stations and their entrances, and building the tunnels running between the stations. Stations and tunnels are constructed in very different ways. Stations are constructed from the surface by excavating the area to be occupied by the station “box.” Construction staging areas are usually located adjacent to station construction sites. Tunnels are excavated below ground using tunnel boring machines (TBMs). The greatest construction impacts will likely be generated by station construction and from the associated construction staging sites. Little disturbance on the surface is likely from the tunnel construction between the station areas. The Final EIS/EIR will evaluate impacts associated with construction and propose mitigations for these impacts. This fact sheet provides an overview of the construction process for stations & tunnels, and also discusses construction staging areas and possible construction impacts. Station Overview The station is a large box, usually about 600-700 feet long and 60 feet wide. In some cases, the box must be longer when crossover tracks are appended to the end of the station. In these cases, the box is about 1,000 feet long. Crossover tracks are required at end stations to turn trains around and periodically allow trains to cross to the opposite track if needed to pass a stalled train or maintenance zone. When completed, the box will accommodate: • The station platform at the lowest level of the box where people will board and exit trains; • About mid-way between the platform and the street level is the concourse level where ticketing machines are located; • At least one street-level station portal entrance; • At least one elevator, two escalators, and stairs between these levels; • Non-public spaces to accommodate station equipment and functions such as communications, power, ventilation, maintenance, etc. Stations are generally 50-60 feet deep to allow easy passenger circulation from the station platform to the surface. When built under a street, they are constructed below temporary concrete decking that allows the street to continue to carry traffic. If located off-street, they can be built using an open excavation, similar to the construction of a building.
Station Construction Initial street excavation for stations may require temporary lane or street closures. Constructing a station is a multi-step process and somewhat more complex if the station is being constructed under a street. Preparing a site for station construction typically begins by protecting or relocating any underground utilities such as power lines, water lines, sewers, gas pipes, cable/telephone lines and storm drains. This will likely require temporary closures of portions of the street under which utilities are located and detouring traffic around the work site. Detours are often limited to weekends or non-peak periods. The next step in the process is to install concrete decking that will serve as the temporary street surface, allowing traffic to continue to flow while construction continues underneath. Vertical support piles are installed along the edges of the street and steel beams are installed across the construction area atop these piles. Concrete decking is then installed in sections on top of the beams flush with the street. The temporary decking is also designed to maintain access to sidewalks and driveways, wherever possible. This initial street excavation and installation of the concrete decking requires temporary street closures. This typically occurs over a series of sequential weekends beginning after rush hour on Friday night, with the street reopening before rush hour on Monday morning. In some cases, communities may prefer to close the streets continuously to shorten the overall duration of this process. If the work can be accomplished by closing only a portion of the lanes, traffic will be accommodated in the remaining lanes. In some instances, the entire street may need to be closed for some period of time. If so, traffic will be temporarily diverted to parallel streets. Once the concrete decking is in place, the traffic continues to flow above while station construction continues below. The next steps involve removing the earth within the area that will eventually become the station box. At the same time, shoring is installed along the edges of the excavation to support the ground around the station box. Once excavation is completed to the bottom of the station box, construction of the inside of the station begins. The public areas of the subway stations also contain architectural design treatments and art work, information displays, lighting, signage, security monitoring devices and many other design ele Hollywood Boulevard traffic continues to flow on concrete decking during construction of the Metro Red Line Hollywood/Highland Station. One of the final steps in the process is the removal of the decking and restoration of the street. This can again be done at night and on weekends, or over a shorter period of time by closing the street continuously and rebuilding the street on top of the station box. When construction is finished, there is little evidence on the surface other than the station entrances. Station construction is estimated to take five to seven years.

We Are In For . . .
A computer rendering of the underground station after it’s been built—Source: Metro
Tunnel Overview Tunnels are typically about 20-feet in diameter. There are two parallel tunnels separated by about 20-feet, one tunnel for train travel in each direction. Tunnels are generally about 50-70 feet deep, though they can be deeper between stations. Some portions of the tunnel alignments currently being planned for the Project are significantly deeper than this, up to about 130 feet. Tunnel Construction The twin tunnels between stations are constructed with TBMs that must be lowered into the ground by cranes through a large shaft referred to as the TBM launch site. These sites are typically located in a staging area near one or more of the station boxes. The TBMs proceed in parallel, tunneling at an average rate of 40 to 50-feet per day. The cutting face and other aspects of TBMs are typically custom-made for each tunneling job depending on the soil conditions that will be encountered. However most urban tunneling around the world today utilizes what is known as pressurized-faced TBMs. These machines maintain the pressure in the surrounding ground, and precast concrete linings are installed as the machines progress. Most recently, Metro used pressurized-face TBMs on the 1.8 mile tunnel for the Metro Gold Line Eastside Extension and experienced no measurable surface subsidence or substantiated property damage claims. Another recent project utilizing pressurized-face TBMs is the City of Los Angeles’ large diameter East Central Interceptor Sewer which runs under portions of Exposition Bl. Different measures can be built into the tunnels along the way to accommodate special conditions. In areas with gassy or watery ground this could include secondary tunnel liners or gaskets, or enhanced ventilation systems. In areas where the tunnel may cross an earthquake fault, a wider tunnel may be excavated or flexible tunnel liners could be inst As the tunneling progresses, the excavated material is brought back to the TBM launch site through the tunnel using bins mounted on rail cars or a conveyor system. Alternately, some systems use a slurry transport method to remove soil to the surface. With a slurry system, excavated soil is mixed with a fluid so it can be pumped thru pipelines in the tunnel. Soil will then be separated from the fluid at the surface worksite. Once the tunneling between the stations is completed and the tunnel surface is finished, the tracks and electrical facilities can be installed. Construction Staging Areas While most of the construction activity takes place below ground, there is also the need for a significant amount of space at the surface to store materials and stage construction activities. It is preferable to utilize two staging areas directly adjacent to each station to allow access to the station construction area to expedite the process. The combined staging area at each station is typically about one acre in size. At locations where TBMs are launched and/or the earth from thtunneling process will be removed, a larger staging area is desired. This larger staging area of about three acres will include the earth removal location, areas to temporarily store the earth and potentially sort it for appropriate disposal, areas for off-street truck loading and unloading, and equipment/construction material storage. The staging areas may also include construction trailers for offices and workshops and some employee parking. Often, the construction staging area is also the site where the
A tunnel boring machine at work—Source: Metro
station entrance (portal) will be located. The staging areas may be on property purchased by Metro or leased from private property owners for the construction period. Owners who retain ownership can then develop their property once subway construction is complete. Construction Schedule Construction timing for the Project is dependent upon how the funding package for the project comes together. Presuming that the environmental clearance process concludes in 2011 and funding is secured, final design and contractor selection processes would occur in 2012. It is likely that early utility relocation work and removal of paleontological resources (fossils) below Wilshire Bl in the vicinity of the La Brea Tar Pits could start sometime in 2012, with heavier construction starting on tunnels and stations in 2013. If funding is secured to build the 9-mile extension all at the same time, construction along the entire alignment to the Westwood/VA Hospital could potentially be completed by 2022. In this case, several pairs of TBMs would be used, tunneling various segments of tunnel at the same time, with work proceeding on all stations simultaneously. If the project must be built in phases, based on the adopted Metro Long Range Transportatation, the first phase would proceed west from the Wilshire/Western Station to approximately La Cienega and it could take until 2036 to complete subsequent construction phases to reach the Westwood/VA station. Determining the Construction Impacts and Mitigations Clearly, subway construction cannot be accomplished without impacts. Some of the impacts from subway construction could be: • Noise, dust, vibration or the visual appearance at construction sites; • Noise and vibration from below ground construction activities; • Traffic impacts from temporary street closures; • Impacts to merchants near construction sites; or • Traffic or other impacts from trucks hauling equipment to or dirt from construction sites. When the Final EIS/EIR for the Project is released, it will provide information about how the subway will be built including impacts from the construction process. These include any potential impacts resulting from constructing the stations, station portals, the use of construction staging locations, and the underground tunnels. The Final EIS/EIR will also propose mitigations to eliminate or reduce any of these impacts. Possible mitigations may include: • Restrictions on days and hours of construction; • Identifying detours for any street closures; • Specifying truck haul routes; • Utilizing noise dampening and/or decorative fencing around construction sites; or • Assistance to area businesses, etc. The public is encouraged to review the Final EIS/EIR document for information about construction impacts and proposed mitigations. Following public release of the Final EIS/EIR, it will be presented to the Metro Board of Directors. They will be asked to adopt the project that will be built including project mitigations. The purchaser shall have no further recourse against the beneficiary, the Trustor or the trustee. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned
off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 877-484-9942 or visit this Internet Web site w w w . U S A Foreclosure.com or www.Auction.com using the file number assigned to this case 7042.23350. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. Date: March 28, 2012 NORTHWEST TRUSTEE SERVICES, INC., as Trustee Morgan Armstrong, Authorized Signatory 1241 E. NOW, EVEN ‘THEY’ ADMIT WE ARE RIGHT In today’s edition, The Courier publishes without alteration or comment the exact words of the Metropolitan Transit Authority about building tunnels and stations in Beverly Hills. Our photographs and artists’ renderings come from the MTA. The clear message it conveys should sober and stun us all. Beverly Hills will be bisected by a deep canyon for five to seven years, many of our most popular venues will be blocked, buildings eliminated, and heavy construction will fill our streets and central neighborhoods. The Courier publishes this information for two purposes: one, to ensure that our own citizens fully understand what “support of the subway” means to our City; and, two, to give absolute proof of the accuracy, completeness and forthrightness of The Courier’s articles for the past 18 months. Among our local poobahs, it has become fashionable to demean members of our school board and to attack The Courier. These attacks have come mainly from the immediate past occupant of the mayor’s seat on our City Council, and have not been challenged or disavowed by our new mayor. These attacks have been repeated in the L. A. County Hall of Administration, among civic groups in Beverly Hills, our usual local flacks, and spread by public relations consultants hired by the City Council. The Courier first began investigating this unfolding attack on Beverly Hills in the fall of 2010. Our Marla Schevker, stonewalled by the MTA, found the “smoking gun” documents proving that MTA planned to tunnel under Beverly Hills High School in the records of the city of Los Angeles Planning Department. We published those documents and attacks on us began. In many cases, those attacks became personal – directed at this writer. Well, OK, so what. You stick your head up above the fox hole and they throw rocks at you. All the attacks have had only one goal in mind – putting a tunnel under Beverly High so that two real estate developers in Century City could obtain extra density (more floors) for buildings they want to build on land they own in Century City. We just wanted the Century City Station moved one block north to the location it was originally planned when the City of Beverly Hills decided to support the subway through our City. Beverly Hills is a victim of a “bait and switch” with hundreds of thousands of dollars of campaign contributions pouring into the coffers of Los Angeles elected officials to make the switch. The entire process stunk and it still does. At the same time, MTA’s publicity machine went into high gear attacking our school board and The Courier. Inside Beverly Hills, of our city councilmembers, only reform members John Mirisch and Lili Bosse stood for action against MTA. The others, Barry Brucker, Willie Brien and Julian Gold, refused to take action. They still refuse. All we got from them was “we oppose the tunnel.” That statement was and is meaningless without action. The local “smarter than us” enlisted their usual crew of panderers, public relations flacks and the whispering campaign to de-legitimize our reporting. They employed the time-honored tactic of spreading personal attacks about The Courier “bullying” and implying that councilmembers who opposed them somehow did not worship in the right place or had some other disability. The rumors, accusations, insinuations and insults continue. Then, last week MTA itself confirmed everything we have reported and everything the school board has warned our City about. Even the pro-MTA apologists, flacks and panderers among us now admit this is very, very bad for Beverly Hills and especially our public schools. The proof is unassailable. The Courier has published facts – we broke first the actual MTA plans. We broke first the entire contents of the City’s own expert report that destroyed the entire basis for the MTA’s case against avoiding a tunnel under Beverly High. Mayor Brucker was furious that we obtained the report. It was so damaging to his position he was desperate to “spin” it his own way – something we prevented. In the process, we suffered the loss of hundreds of thousands of advertising dollars caused directly by our opposition to the tunnel under Beverly High, loss of access to much information, and the granting of favors by our City management and council majority to others. Those dollars were redirected to others and, guess what? These others don’t think the subway under Beverly High is so bad after all! Look where the ad dollars went. We also watched these same poobahs intrude into non-profit organizations and get them to back the Los Angeles Times instead of continuing to work with The Courier. THE TIMES! Since when has the Los Angeles Times helped, supported or benefitted Beverly Hills? Never, but that’s what has been going on. All of this has been a blatant drive to hurt The Courier financially and damage our credibility. Well, it didn’t work. The Courier has never been stronger. Our readership is up even more; our revenues are fine. The people support us because we support the people. The insiders have lost. The Courier is proud we are denounced by Los Angeles’ elected officials. We are proud our local apologists are furious that The Courier has blown their cover. We are proud of the fact that our truthful, thorough and investigative reporting has told the public what is really going on. This is exactly why all of us at The Courier are in the newspaper business. This newspaper is doing exactly what the First Amendment intended for a free press – to expose government, corruption and sweetheart deals that damage the public. We also chuckle that the panderers, flacks and bought-and-paidfor “media” inhabitants of our community (no need to name names, everyone knows who they are) NOW decide to join the fight lest they get exposed and left behind. And, we will be especially proud if our new Mayor Brien actually decides to heed the nearunanimous voice of friends and neighbors and finally decides to DO something, not just talk. We just need to watch carefully, though, to make sure he doesn’t engineer some sort of back-room deal that sells us out, so keep your eyes and ears open. Tuesday night’s City Council meeting is critical. Please let your voices be heard.
Rabbi Jacob Pressman THE CLAP TRAP Of all the myriad television sounds that assail our ears day and night, the most ubiquitous is the sound of applause. We have been trained over the decades to hear the sound of large groups of people clapping their hands together and assume therefrom that something important has just happened. It might be a heroic deed, an approval of some idea being offered for our consideration, or the assemblage at some public event expressing approval of what is happening. Since it follows any comic or heroic act, we are cajoled into believing we must add our approval by striking our two hands one against the other over and over again. Let me attempt a list of occasions meriting the applause. Any and every baseball, football, soccer, auto race, foot race, dog race, tennis, badminton, bocce ball, volleyball, quoits, or swimming competition, boy kissing girl, fashion show or beauty pageant is followed by a sound storm of clapping. To this cacophony we are currently being treated to a nonstop political marathon, which stretches, from the end of one election to the next. I would hazard an uneducated guess that every 10 seconds from dawn to after midnight somebody is being applauded for something. Take the television drama series. There they are, as in All In The Family or Everybody Loves Raymond, and despite the fact that they probably do not have a live audience, shrieks of laughter and bursts of applause follow every few words. Who is laughing and applauding? The technician whose finger releases a canned sound that begins abruptly and ends abruptly unlike a live audience’s reactions. We sit quietly at home watching and believing we are having a good time…or not. What it all adds up to is that today our emotions are being synthesized for us, one more evidence of what an easy life we are leading. Or are we?
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Shame on Metro for even considering digging a tunnel under Beverly Hills High School. To go under a school in an earthquake zone is absurd. You also run a risk of weakening the structure and it makes future expansion of the school harder. Metro claims the tunnel would be safe, but to take that much earth from under the school would mean the land would not be as safe as it was before. George Vreeland Hill Beverly Hills ****** The tunnel can be before the high school by making the turn from Wilshire to Santa Monica Boulevard a smaller radius. This requires trains to run slower over this portion of track. This could be done by the motorman but it would be better to reduce the track voltage over this portion of track. Leave the station at Santa Monica and Avenue of the Stars (or different parallel street) and install a moving sidewalk (on the ground covered or in a tunnel) from there to Constellation. Kodak might pay to extend the sidewalk to Pico. Ellis Landsbaum, Ph.D Beverly Hills ****** When I saw the headline “Metro On Track To Destroy Beverly High” in your paper, I thought I was reading the National Lampoon. It’s hard to believe many of the world’s cities do not have subway systems that run beneath schools, hospitals, and department stores (I’m thinking of the Downtown Crossing station in Boston, for one). I haven’t heard of any being destroyed by a metro system. To locate a metro station in such a way as to require thousands of people to walk a longer
distance to use the subway is a disservice to everyone, rich and poor alike. We need better transit everywhere to reduce air pollution, congestion, and greenhouse gas emissions. Please reconsider your position. Len Conly Berkeley Editor’s note: There is no subway tunnel under any public high school building in California. There is no subway tunnel anywhere in the world under a public high school building on an active oil field. The writer is mistaken. ****** Shameless editorializing in a headline “Metro On Track to Destroy Beverly High.” I envisioned bulldozers leveling the place! Can’t you trust your readers to make up their own minds from straight reportage? Confine the editorializing to the Op Ed page. Janet Kirby Malibu ****** Has anybody noticed the condition of Santa Monica Boulevard, especially between Palm and Elm. Not only does the street have to be repaired but with the rain, holes form and fill with water which can easily result in damaged cars. I am sure they could make claim against the City. I was just informed we are remodeling the library and will lay off librarians as it is to be closed again. The library was just fine and there is a big difference between remodeling and repairing. I am convinced there must be a serious problem with some City officials eager to spend in order to have their names on “plaques.” Pablo Nankin, M.D. Beverly Hills
