MY EXCELLENT OFF-BROADWAY ADVENTURE

T

o my great delight, I unexpectedly found myself with the time to go to the theater twice during a single weekend. Luckily, two new Off-Broadway productions, The Revisionist and Belleville, had been generating enormous buzz and commanding impressive ticket sales, so choosing what to see turned out to be a snap.

My first selection, The Revisionist,

is the second play written by and starring quirky, fast-talking Jesse Eisenberg, a 2010 “Best Actor” Oscar contender for his shrewd characterization of Facebook founder/CEO Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network.

L

ast year, Eisenberg’s first play, Asuncion, took over the stage of the179-seat Cherry Lane Theatre.

Determined to write a play a year, the precocious movie star has returned to the same venue with The Revisionist, bringing along the same producers and director, along with a new buddy whose name just happens to be Vanessa Redgrave.

The show was scheduled to run a

mere six weeks, but when The New York Times proclaimed Redgrave’s performance the best she had given in New York in the last ten years, the engagement was instantly extended to April 21.

Eisenberg is of Polish extrac-

tion, and he once visited Poland to see a cousin. In The Revisionist, his character, David, is a writer suffering from crippling writer’s block. Determined to escape from every conceivable distraction so that he can hopefully revise his second novel, he impulsively heads to Poland to spend a week hiding out in the apartment of a second cousin, Maria (Redgrave), whom he’s never met.

o, lucky me! Over the course of two days, I had seen two young Gen Y playwrights paint devastating portraits of members of their own generation.

Thanks to this particular excellent adventure.

By Matt Lopez Beverly Hills is one step closer to adding another car dealership to the City.

The Planning Commission on Thursday evening gave the green light to a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) for Infiniti to

run vehicle service operations at 9031 Olympic Blvd.

Infiniti is proposing to open and run its sales operations at 8825 Wilshire Blvd., a site formerly occupied by BMW. Infiniti also plans to operate further service operations

at 9000 and 9001 Olympic Blvd. Of the four locations, only 9031 needed approval for a CUP because the others were either grandfathered in, or already had vehicle sales or service CUPs. (see ‘INFINITI’ page 13)

Beverly Hills Wood Roofs Must Be Replaced Or Sprayed By 2014

By Matt Lopez Beginning in July 2014, all 215 wood roofs in the City of Beverly Hills will either need to be replaced or covered in a fire retardant spray.

The City Council made the Wood Roof Ordinance official Tuesday evening by a unani-

mous vote.

The City has been attempting to phase out wood roofs, which it deems as a fire hazard, for many years. In 1993, the City required all wood roofs to be replaced with “Class A” roof assemblies by (see ‘WOOD ROOF’ page 13)

GO GREEN–Horace Mann celebrated its annual Science and Go Green Night. The event was a part of the Student/Parent Educational Night and one in a series of monthly Educational Nights held throughout the school year. Science Night included a student Science Fair. By Matt Lopez As an esteemed doctor, Julian Gold is used to delivering health news–good or bad–to patients.

So how does a physician like Gold react when he is on the receiving end of the diagnosis?

Gold found out first hand on Sept. 18, 2006 when he was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia.

“It hit me like a bolt of lightning... “ Gold told The Courier. “Nothing prepares you for this. I made the decision to let the smart guys do what they had to for me.”

L.A. County Sheriff’s Department Makes 23 Arrests At West Hollywood DUI Checkpoint

By Matt Lopez The Los Angeles County’s Sheriff’s Department netted 23 arrests during a routine DUI/Drivers License checkpoint last Friday evening in West Hollywood.

A total of 825 drivers were

stopped at the checkpoint, which was conducted on San Vicente at Beverly Boulevard.

The department said the goal of the checkpoints, one of many to be conducted throughout the year in West Hollywood, is to “bring aware-

ness to the public about the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.”

Eight drivers were arrested for alcohol or drug related offenses and 13 for either being unlicensed, or having a suspended/revoked license.

L.A. City Attorney Carmen Trutanich To Open Valley Re-Election Campaign Office On Saturday

By Matt Lopez L.A.’s City Atty. Carmen Trutanich will kick off his reelection campaign this Saturday with the opening of a new San Fernando Valley campaign office in Van Nuys.

Trutanich will be joined by

Receiving more than 60,000 votes, Kevin’s endorsement has been sought after by the Garcetti and Greuel camps for the May 21 runoff that will elect the 42nd mayor of Los Angeles.

And I’d like new levels of transparency at City Hall to root out the corruption with the building, safety and housing departments and their scandalous bribery. We need a change in the overpayments of the Department of Water and Power salaries, and stop the unnecessary transfer of city employees to other departments. These changes would save millions every year.

By Laura Coleman On the cusp of celebrating his 30th anniversary in the hospitality industry this month, Luxe Hotels Founder Efrem Harkham sat down with The Courier and shared how an unexpected real estate play transformed him into an industry leader.

The year was 1983 and Harkham purchased the Bel-Air Summit Hotel (now the Luxe Sunset Boulevard Hotel) intending to develop the seven-acre property into housing. But the “fortune,” as he called it, of the previous team having pre-sold rooms for months to accommodate the 1984 Olympics Committee, combined with his innate knack for hospitality, transformed a money-making real estate venture into a date with destiny.

Indeed, for generations his mother’s ancestors, keepers of the Tomb of the prophet Ezra the Scribe in Israel, had

been taking care of those who visited the site - including Harkham’s father who made the pilgrimage at 18.

“The passion of hospitality really got into my veins,” he said. “It’s in my genes.”

By the time Harkham purchased Rodeo Drive’s lone hotel in 1993, today the Luxe Rodeo Drive Hotel, he knew the magic formula for success: “Warmth and being part of the community.”

Today, Luxe Worldwide Hotels is a leading boutique hotel brand, representing almost 200 of the world’s best hotels.

Dealing With A Child’s Perfectionism; What Parents Wish They Knew Earlier Q: Dear Dr. Fran, how do I get my over-achieving 9-year-old to relax a little, to realize that it’s okay to be imperfect? She remembered she forgot to do her homework while brushing her teeth for bed, I said “no worries” and that she could do it then. She starting crying and saying she does everything wrong (her automatic response when anything goes wrong.)

Two days ago she got an 88 on a math quiz and again started crying because she thought she was a failure even though I told her I was still proud. I have never put any emphasis on her grades, nor have I ever expected perfection from her. Help! Cheryl L. A: Dear Cheryl, you sound like a warm, flexible, and loving mother. First, let’s be sure it’s perfectionism your 9-year-old is dealing with.

Could it be she fears her teacher’s disapproval and anger?

Does her father react when she fails with frustration or disappointment? Is there peer pressure in her class when other kids ask: “What did you get on the test?”

If the answer to these questions is “no,” then she may be a self-imposed perfectionist.

Are there other areas in her life in which she supremely organizes (or attempts to) her environment? For instance, is her artwork filled with repeated patterns of colors, shapes, and figures? Does she line things up in

categories of color, size, or height? Does she dress herself neat as a pin, or “without a hair out of place?”

The bottom line is your daughter needs empathic narrative from you. The key is your tone of voice and body language when you say the following. Be sure to have genuine compassion in your voice. Say, “You know, Sweetie, I think sometimes it’s hard to be you. You’re so hard on yourself. You don’t even give yourself a chance to misstep.” Then, say nothing more.

Watch her to see if your message seeps in. You should see her relax a bit and take a deep breath which is her way of letting go of some of the anxiety that keeps her wound up tight.

The easier she can be on herself, the more she will be able to tolerate imperfection in others.

We can’t prevent life’s inevitable letdowns and disappointments. The best we can do is equip our children with coping skills to deal with disappointments.

Each time you let her wrestle with her own self-disappointment you give her an opportunity to grow. Remind her that no one is perfect. We all make mistakes. And, we all need to accept ourselves— flaws and all.

Robert E. A: Dear Robert, congratulations to you and your wife. Here are the top five things parents wish they knew earlier.

1. Separation anxiety comes from two root causes. One, either the parent (usually mom) is over-attached and does not nurture the separation process.

Or two, mom or dad is “there,” but not accessible (detached or distracted) to the child so he or she feels emptiness.

Mom needs to know she is okay without her baby and the child needs to know he or she is okay without mom. Consult a child development specialist if the attachment or separation goes off track.

2. Never fight with your kids about what goes into their bodies or what comes out. I cannot tell you how many parents get stuck in two developmentally crucial areas—eating and pooping. That’s why girls get stuck with eating disorders and the boys get stuck in the pooping disorders. They are both anxietybased, but quickly become con-

trol issues where the kid feels over-controlled by the parent and, in the end, those are two body function control areas that the parent cannot win.

3. Encourage your wife to nourish and fortify herself with individual time. Take a walk, listen to music, sit with her feet up and read a magazine. Do whatever makes her feel good and nourishes her. Get enough sleep, eat well, and have a confidant to talk to who will listen empathically without judgment. She needs a person to talk to also.

You do, too.

4. Every child is an individual and unique and parents need to adjust their expectations to each child’s capacity.

For instance, if you have a kid with learning disabilities and fine motor weakness, your expectations of him doing handwriting work may be different from one of the kids who may not have the same weakness.

You’ve got to adjust.

Don’t expect your kid to do the adjusting, it’s the parent who needs to do the adjusting first and then your child will come to you to meet you in the middle.

5. Being a parent is, perhaps, the most difficult job in the world. Why do we do this? In the unconscious mind there’s probably some thought about survival of the species.

I really think, though, most people want to turn the clock around and “do it right this

time.” They are trying to correct the wrongs that were done to them by their parents.

Sadly, they either unconsciously repeat it without having walked that self-examination path or—the mistakes that were done to them they fix— but they make new ones they regret. The answer to doing it right is a lot of work on one’s self. The better we know ourselves the better we can impart clearer messages to children.

who’s an actress, and a son who’s a dancer, not only is his legacy evidenced in his children, but the connection between the high school and his life continues to be linked indelibly.

The Courier: How did you get involved in teaching at BHHS? Pressman: Sort of a joke. I heard that my high school director was retiring and thought, ‘It will be fun to go interview, I’ll never get the job.’ So I was very relaxed cause I had nothing riding on it. I knew I wasn’t going to get hired. And I’ve been there 38 years. So there’s a moral there, I’m not sure it’s a good one.

TC: You grew up in Beverly Hills, graduated from BHHS. What about Elementary?

Pressman: Beverly Vista. Fantastic music program. There were over 40 guys in boys glee club singing in four parts, soprano, alto, tenor, bass, and everybody read music. It was a different time. Everybody I knew had music lessons. Everybody I knew played an instrument, played piano. Now, soccer. Sports was kind of a joke and the arts were not and that has changed.

TC: What was the ‘Golden Age’ of teaching for you?

Pressman: I’m going to sound like a real old fogey, but, when I first started teaching (1975) we had one of the most brilliant directors we’ve ever had, John Ingle, who passed away this last year, and we had a phenomenal Superintendent (Ken Peters) and large feeder programs. Not that it’s all been downhill since then, that was just a unique mix of extraordinary people.

TC: You’ve gone through quite a few Superintendents in your time with the district, what was so impressive about him?

Pressman: Ken Peters is still the benchmark. He is still the person that I measure all other superintendents against. It was very clear that he trained the school board to know what their job was and what it wasn’t. The kind of micro-managing that we’ve seen in the last 10 years would never have happened.

TC: Last week you went before the Board of Education and voiced concern about changes in how the district is run. What are some of the concerns that you’re seeing right now?

Pressman: Anything having to do with finances. Increasingly, everything we do is wrong.

Previously groups would send kids out to sell tickets for concerts, dance company, choir concerts, the musical. ‘No, we want all transactions to go

through the student store,’ which doesn’t have the manpower to handle that by the way and which limits what you do. So they put rules into place to produce the income that you need because the school district doesn’t pay for the extra things that we do. We have gone to music festivals for years, and the district’s financial involvement is basically paying for substitute teachers and that’s it.

TC: Why do you do teach and what do you love about it?

Pressman: I never thought about that. I love doing it because I love musical theatre and get to watch kids learn to love it too. It’s like showing people pictures of your grandchildren, you want them to go, ‘What beautiful grandchildren!’ You hand out a piece of music and when they first get it they go, ‘Oh Mozart, isn’t that a dead guy?’ And then four weeks later, that kid says, ‘Can we sing the Mozart?’ Like a light went off. You’ve broadened them. I also like it because it’s detective work. Your choir sings and you have to figure out what’s going on and you have to figure out what would be the very first thing to do to make it better. You have the detective work of working with the most complicated unfathomable machine there is, which is humans, and figure out how they think and read them, deal with all the baggage

that they bring from outside and try to keep them connected and when you don’t, you feel personally like you’ve been defeated and when you do, you feel like, that’s why I’m a teacher.

TC: What do you think the beauty of music is about?

Pressman: On the wall in my classroom are quotes from people more brilliant than I and they say things like, ‘Music expresses that which cannot be expressed in words.’ Music enables you to find parts of yourself that the common stuff in life doesn’t always reach. Think of life without music. Think of weddings, think of funerals, think of movies, think of dancing without music, I think that’s just called shaking. It’s one of those things where there are moments in the classroom when something happens musically and everyone feels it and everyone feels like they are part of something immense and important, but they can’t describe it to their friends.

TC: What’s unique about performing in an ensemble?

Pressman: It’s a difference in ego. When there is a kind of an ego which is healthy that says, ‘I am so happy that I sang my bass part in a way that makes the soprano sound better.’ It’s not the ego of, ‘I have to be in the center spotlight all the time.’ It’s knowing that what

TC: For your final musical, you conducted The Secret Garden, how was that experience?

Pressman: I told the kids, it was a good show to end on. It was a beautiful story, I’ve always wanted to conduct it. It’s not an easy show to conduct because there’s so much music, there’s underscoring, there’s a lot of vibrato, subtle changes in tempo to accommodate the singers so you really have to have all your nerve endings going so that was pretty exciting. Also, it’s a hard show because it’s all about life and death and I am dealing with that on a daily basis. The moral of it is choose life because Archie the main character can’t let go of his dead wife, doesn’t want to talk to his son, who he’s afraid he will lose, keeps the windows covered in the house, it’s dark, it’s gloomy, and gradually, the young girl that comes into the house, brings him back to life and the land of the living. So there’s moments in that play where it became very personal for me. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It is better to feel, than not to feel.

“Beverly Hills High School and particularly the Performing Arts Department just won't be the same without you. Whatever your future path may be, I wish you all the best, and many, many years ahead in which your heart is filled with a song and in which you're able to share your music with all of us. Thank you for all you have done for our District, for our children and for all of us in Beverly Hills.”

One issue the commission did not address was how the project fits into the City’s revitalization plans for Southeast Beverly Hills. A resident who lives in the southeast of the City, was one of three concerned residents who spoke at Thursday’s meeting.

The resident admonished City staff for failing to consult the Southeast Task Force, a citizen group aimed at revitalizing the southeast, before presenting its report to the commission. The resident said an automotive facility is “directly in contradiction” to the goals of the task force, which aims to turn the southeast into a “theater and arts district” with theaters, galleries, museums and grocery stores such as Trader Joes.

At Tuesday’s City Council study session, Mirisch discussed ways the Southeast Task Force could be more involved in such decisions.

“I would just ask Staff that anytime something comes up, major projects, something that is going to have potential impacts, please be very up front about letting the task force know about this,” Mirisch said. “Maybe it’s a subject the task force can either discuss or choose not to discuss.”

Murray Fischer, the attorney representing the applicant told the council he was concerned about another “layer” being added to the application process.

ly Hills Unified School District’s federal lawsuit was consolidated with the case filed by the City of Beverly Hills, with an option to unconsolidate later if necessary.

A lot of times, cases are consolidated because they have common issues. This allows them to be heard by the same judge and avoid conflicting rulings from two different courtrooms.

The BHUSD and the City California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) lawsuits were related, meaning they will be tracked together and heard by the same judge.

In the federal case, they are currently waiting for the administrative record before they can proceed. The government is required to provide all documents on which the FTA and MTA used to make their decisions.

This includes the final and draft environmental impact statements.

The government has agreed to provide these documents by April 16 and another status conference has been set for May 16.

At that time, Gluck said the BHUSD is going to seek to conduct discovery outside of the administrative record. NEPA cases are usually limited to the administrative record but Gluck said there are a few cases where additional discovery is permitted.

The CEQA lawsuit, filed in the State of California, does not currently have any upcoming conferences or hearings set up.

However, Hill Farrer & Burrill lawyer Kevin Brogan said there will need to be a status conference to discuss the inclusion of the California Geological Sur-

vey (CGS) letter dated March 15.

While the BHUSD would like to include the letter in the administrative record, Brogan said Metro denied the district’s request.

The letter from the CGS confirmed there are no active faults at or adjacent to Beverly Hills High School.

Metro used the excuse of the alleged active fault as justification to pay the BHUSD a token amount for taking land underneath the high school.

When determining where to place the Century City subway station, Metro used a superficial investigation to show an active earthquake fault underneath Santa Monica Boulevard at Avenue of the Stars.

This required the location to be placed at Avenue of the Stars and Constellation with a tunnel underneath the high school.

This same investigation concluded there were active faults underneath the high school, a theory disproven by both BHUSD experts and the CGS. Brogan also said they have received the administrative record for the CEQA case and are working on the briefing process.

Instead of a typical trial found in a civil lawsuit, CEQA suits follow a briefing process where the BHUSD will file a brief, the MTA will file its brief, the BHUSD will file a reply brief and after some period of time (usually approximately 30 days) there will be a hearing where a judge will either rule on the case or schedule oral arguments.

Brogan said he anticipated a hearing for the BHUSD CEQA case to be held in early 2014.

tensive chemotherapy. He says he spent two months at Cedars separated by four weeks at home for two rounds of chemo.

“The chemo was nasty, I felt really lousy,” Gold said.

From there, he went to City of Hope for a bone marrow transplant and found a man who matched, thanks to a national bone marrow registry.

The registry identifies people based on their genetic makeup.

Gold says: “it’s almost as if this person and I might have been related generations ago.”

During the first year, he was not allowed to know the identity of the donor, but his wife would write letters that were sent to him through the registry.

A year after the transplant, the two were finally able to meet and still keep in touch.

“We are forever grateful for his kindness,” Gold said.

Since beating cancer, Gold has taken on a role as one of the go-to community members for those suffering from, or who have loved ones suffering from cancer.

“I tell them to stay positive but to understand there will be some really bad days,” Gold said.

“Take it one day at a time.

Every day is a good day, but some days are harder than others.”

Gold said the importance of Relay for Life, which is being held in Beverly Hills May 4 at El Rodeo School, is to “destigmatize the word cancer” and demonstrate that “there is hope and many cancers today can be cured.”

The auction at the black-tie event featured a dinner in McEntire’s Beverly Hills home with special guests Rita (Wilson) and Tom Hanks and David Foster. This went to two bidders paying $400,000 each with Tom throwing in two tickets to his Broadway show Lucky Guy to seal the bids.

A week-long trip to Tuscany, plus a special VIP performance by Bocelli followed by a private dinner sold for $550,000.

From the Publisher CLIF SMITH THE CITY REFORMS BEGIN This week saw the first installment of what happens when you elect a majority of City councilmembers committed to opening our City government to the people. The new majority revised the City’s email retention policy so individual staff members no longer can delete emails just because they don’t think they warrant retention.

All emails will now be retained for two years, not just 30 days as in many cases.

This should have been a “no brainer” but it was not. A similar move by new Mayor John Mirisch in October was defeated 2-3 by the previous council.

The Courier congratulates the new council reform majority of Mayor John Mirisch, Vice Mayor Lili Bosse and returning councilmember Nancy Krasne for a common-sense change in City policy. We remain disappointed that former mayor Willie Brien and councilmember Julian Gold continue to put concerns over “staff privacy” ahead of the people’s right to know. The vote was 3-2.

Question: Why should any City employee believe that an official City-owned email is their personal e-communication device? That was really the only issue. Does not every staff member have a personal, private email for purely personal business? Cell phones that can text? One

The policy passed by a 3-2 vote with Mayor John Mirisch, Vice Mayor Lili Bosse and Councilmember Nancy Krasne voting in favor. Councilmembers Willie Brien and Julian Gold dissented.

The two-year policy, which calls for all e-mails sent to City employees to be kept for two years, puts Beverly Hills in line with the California Public Records Act (CPRA). The CPRA states the public has a right to inspect and copy all documents of any kind, including e-mail messages “containing information relating to the conduct of the public’s business prepared, owned, used or retained by any state or local agency...”

The policy review was called up by Mirisch, who sought a similar change in October, but he and Bosse were outvoted by Brien, Gold and Barry Brucker.

The staff report characterized many of the City’s e-mails as simple “notes” such as a short e-mail about meeting for lunch, a statement Mirisch has consistently disagreed with.

Mirisch has said time and again the goal in extending the policy is being fully transparent with the community.

“It’s a good first step... it allows people the ability to access City e-mails that can shed some light on what business is being done at City Hall,” Mirisch told The Courier.

California’s newspapers are in a constant battle with City and county governments for open access.

The non-profit California First Amend-ment Coalition presses local governments and goes to court to vindicate the people’s right to know.

California’s “freedom of information act,” the California Public Records Act, and our openmeeting statute, the Brown Act, put into law the people’s right to know. Bureaucrats and many elected officials at all levels fight these two laws, try to limit them, and often seek to avoid them. That’s what the previous council did – but the new council just elected by the people fixed that. Again, congratulations.

We look forward to more changes to bring true open City government to Beverly Hills. More hopefully, we would truly welcome a change of heart of City staffers from City Manager Jeff Kolin to all levels to recognize that the people will be heard and that the people – not the bureaucrats–are in charge.

Terry Francke, general counsel for Californians Aware (an organization that deals with the understanding and use of public forum laws) has previously told The Courier that such a policy makes records unavailable to the public by “preemptive destruction.”

Before voting “no,” Brien and Gold questioned whether there was a way to warn people who correspond with City staff that the ensuing e-mail would become public record. Chief Information Officer David Schirmer said such a thing was likely not possible.

Mirisch likened the policy to a 911 call, where the person calling is not warned that their call is part of the public record, although the recording of the call does go into the public record.

“If you write something in an e-mail, you better be prepared to let it be in the newspaper. I’m not writing anything in an e-mail that I don’t want 50, or 50,000 people reading,” Krasne said.

“This is a public, transparent City, I ran on transparency and sunshine is the best disinfectent I know.”

Did you miss me last week? Well, I missed you as I was lying in bed on the fourth floor of my home away from home: CedarsSinai Medical Center. It seems that last Tuesday at 4 a.m., I was awakened by a sharp pain in my chest. I quickly called the Beverly Hills Fire Department, told them how I felt, and asked for paramedics. With characteristic alacrity, our trusty emergency crew arrived at my door, examined me and decided to take me to the hospital–blaring sirens and all.

The emergency crew took a quick look, and speedily had me in a private room. By then my pains had gone away but I began a series of thorough examinations which lasted several days. I never knew how many examination areas existed in the hospital. My bed was trundled hither and yon and I was photographed, poked and questioned over and over again.

When firmly established in my room, I noticed that every set of four rooms was served by two nurses who were kept busy by complaining patients. I was astonished to learn they are on 12hour shifts. Despite this exhausting schedule, the personnel were remarkably amiable although it left them no time for sponge baths in the morning, frequent changes of linen, and surprise snacks as in the old days, as when my darling nurses would bring me ice cream, sit opposite me and chat while I used the commode.

Suddenly on the fifth day, I was prepped to go home, not asked to fill out nor sign anything, and on the way back to my residence where I hope to continue this column in good health.
