RESTORING THE LIGHTS — The City leaders joined the Friends of Beverly Gardens Park and a host of well-wishers Tuesday for a ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony, ushering in another century for the world renowned Electric Fountain. Efforts included restoration of the brilliant light show that stopped traffic when it was originally built in 1931. Designed by architect Ralph Flewelling with a sculpture of a Tongva Indian atop by Robert Merrel Gage, the fountain was a gift from Harold Lloyd’s mother and the Women’s Club of Beverly Hills (celebrating its own Centennial year). The Electric Fountain restoration is part of a public-private partnership with the Friends of Beverly Gardens Park (www.fobgp.org) and the City of Beverly Hills that also restored the landmark Lily Pond. The ceremony included a Tongva blessing by Tribal Council Head of Cultural Affairs for the Coyote Tribe Julia Bogan. David Bohnett Chairs Wallis Board, Continues Arts Patronage By Steve Simmons Arts patron and technology entrepreneur David Bohnett is following his passions. He’s helping infant tech companies take their first steps and arts institutions expand. The arts are a “vital part of the community,” Bohnett says. And he wants people to “pop in to see a play, experience great music and see art.” President Barack Obama appointed Bohnett to the board of trustees of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.; and he takes Kennedy’s quote—”Arts define who we are as a society”–as a personal mission. Kate Mantilini Gets Historic Landmark Recommendation By Victoria Talbot The Cultural Heritage Commission (CHC) and the owners of Gibraltar Square/Kate Mantilini reached an agreement today that will add the historic buildings to the City’s Local Register of Historic Properties. The agreement reflects the commision’s dedication to striking a balance between the needs of the owners and historic preservation, and demonstrates adaptability for modernization. Gibraltar Square/Kate Mantilini at 9101 - 9111 Wilshire Blvd. was the 1957-8 Gibraltar Savings branch office steel-frame and glass construction by Pereira & Luckman. The addition of a steel-and-glass 7story tower was designed by architect Victor Gruen Associates in 1959. Then, in 1968, a bank and parking structure were erected by Maxwell Starkman AIA & Assoc. That building became the iconic Kate Mantilini Restaurant in 1985 when Harry and Marilyn Lewis took it over. Seeking to create a “roadside steakhouse for the future – with

a clock.” The structure defined a generation of design. The magic came when architect Thom Mayne joined with Michael Rotondi at the firm Morphosis. Kate Mantilini was one of the first projects to realize their vision. They surrounded the bank’s exterior with an industrial-style steel scaffolding that repurposed and transformed the building. Filling the interior with sunlight on the east end is a giant orrery with a mechanical model of the solar system that juts through a 14-foot skylight and ends with a sundial on the roof. Inside, the dining hall is dominated by a John Wehrle 33-foot long mural entitled Knockout painted on a curving gypsum cement plaster wall. The dining room captured the 1980’s era of dining, but it also launched an architectural revolution. “By commissioning Morphosis, Lewis created a restaurant where dining out was an experience that went far (see ‘KATE MANTILINI’ page 10)

Beverly Hills Education Foundation Appeals To Business Community To Partner With Schools By Laura Coleman Four years after Audi Beverly Hills opened on Wilshire Boulevard, the dealership is now the #1 in the nation. It’s an achievement that Audi General Manager Michael Bradford said might very well be linked to the decision to make a $100,000 multi-year donation commitment to Beverly Hills schools. In fact, that financial commitment – Audi just made an additional $25,000 donation to the Beverly Hills Education Foundation – became the first step in what has shaped up to

be a true partnership. Recently, Bradford joined the BHEF Board of Directors and has been at the forefront of the nonprofit’s nascent Business Sponsorship Program. “What better way to become part of the community than becoming involved with Beverly Hills schools,” he explained. “I wish the businesses in town realized how much good will is there for the taking if they’d just get involved.” As part of the initiative, Bradford has been approaching local businesses, hotels and restaurants in an effort to en-

gage them in the future of the local schools. In addition to culling financial investments, the new initiative strives to link businesses directly with students. Last week, for example, Bradford was among 100 local business leaders to speak at the Beverly Hills High School career day, where he let students know that Audi technicians make a six-figure salary. Such insight is particularly meaningful in a world where not every student is destined for an Ivy League education. (see ‘BHEF’ page 18)

FUN RUN – El Rodeo held its annual Fun Run on Wednesday, which included a picnic lunch for parents and the students having their annual fun run, with food supplied by Upper Crust Pizza. El Rodeo Principal Kevin Allen, Erica Friedman and Lynn Iezman worked hard to coordinate the event, which is one of the premier fundraising events annually for the school. “A school is so much more than the walls that house it. It is the community that joins together in support of children. Our Fun Run is just one example of how our school, in spite of the construction we are experiencing, continues to be a vibrant community where children learn, grow and play with the strong support of an active community and staff,” said Allen. By Victoria Talbot Councilmember Willie Brien, whose heartfelt farewells at the installation of Mayor John Mirisch March 16 elicited a host of well-wishers and sad goodbyes, has yet to submit his resignation. However, in response to public comments from residents who asked when the absent councilmember would leave so that the City can move on, Brien, over the phone, informed council members Tuesday that he plans to submit a letter with an effective date on or about May 2. On October 29, the City announced that Brien had accepted a position at St. Luke’s Health-Baylor Medical Center as Vice President of Medical Operations and Chief Clinical Officer. St. Luke’s Health–Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center (Baylor St. Luke’s) also announced William Brien, MD, as its Vice President of Medical Operations and Chief Clinical Officer, effective December 9. It is not known why Councilman Brien continues to remain on the council. Over the past year, he has conducted City Council meetings from a remote location on several oc-

casions, most notably following the events on Nov. 21-22, when his friend Lyn Konheim clear-cut the trees on parcels 12 & 13. Teleconferencing prevents call-in participation from residents. When a seat is prematurely vacated, according to state law (Gov. Code Section 36512) the City Council has 60 days to decide if the wish is to have an election or if the wish is to avoid an election and fill the vacancy. If no action is taken, there will be an election. Otherwise, the council may decide to make an appointment for the unexpired term of the incumbent. On Jan. 16, following Brien’s announcement, the council repealed Municipal Code Section 2-1-21 that required a special election within 30 days of a council vacancy to fill the unexpired term Gov. Code Sec. 46512(b). The change aligns the City with state law and allows the option of appointment to the unfilled term. If Brien submits his (see ‘BRIEN’ page 18)

Mid-Year Review Of City’s Fiscal Status Shows Transient Occupancy Tax Weakness By Victoria Talbot A report on the City’s MidYear Budget Status Tuesday showed weakness in the City’s Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) which was estimated to deliver $39.140 million but delivered $38 million. The mid-year review is a general revenue assessment designed to keep City Council informed of financial trends. Revenues from property taxes, according to the L.A. County tax assessor, increased by 9.1-percent, the second highest year-over-year percentage increase assessed property valuation in the county, after the city of West Hollywood. Estimates were originally at 2.5 percent over Fiscal Year (FY) 2014/15. The result is estimated to bring an additional $2.4 million more than the original estimate as home values continue to rise. Sales tax revenue is estimated to increase $2 million because of a state program for financing their debt that used a portion of cities’ sales tax will return the 1-percent allocation to the City in the last quarter of the year. In FY 2016/17, the “Triple Flip” will no longer exist, and the City will receive their full sales tax payment

from the state. The Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) is showing a slight increase year over year, but it is not meeting the projections. Up $150,000 (0.9-percent), the revenue is about 2.9percent below the original projection. Don Rhodes, CFO/director of Administrative Services, believes that two hotels that underwent renovations were a factor in the underperformance, and that construction located nearby a third hotel also played a part, a situation that will correct itself before year’s end. The general fund held $33.044 million unallocated balance. The council voted to allocate some of those funds for public safety – a Mobile Command Center for the BHPD ($400,000), and Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus ($111,000) for the BHFD. Money was also allocated ($800,000) for the Cabrillo/Coldwater reservoir, and $1 million to the Beverly Gardens Park matching funds and the purple pipe project on Santa Monica Boulevard ($2.2 million).

Beverly Hills Synagogue To Host Gourmet Passover Seder For Third Year By Laura Coleman For a third year in a row Beverly Hills Synagogue on Alden Drive will celebrate Passover with a gourmet Seder dinner on the first night of the festival, Friday, April 22. The evening is being catered by veteran gourmet food purveyor Jack Abikze. The annual celebratory feast revolves around retelling the story of the Jewish Exodus from Egypt 3,500 years ago. According to the Temple’s Rabbi Pini Dunner, who will lead the Seder, the Exodus of the Jews from 200 years of enslavement in ancient Egypt formed the backdrop for the creation of Jewish nationhood. And just seven weeks after leaving Egypt, he said, the Jews received the Torah at Mount Sinai. “We are absolutely delighted that our synagogue can provide an upmarket Seder dinner for the residents of Beverly Hills,” Dunner said. “Between Jack’s incredible food, the selection of

high quality wines, and the ambience at our beautiful new facility, we know our guests will have a Seder dinner they will never forget.” In previous years Abikze provided the guests with beef chateaubriand and herb-roasted baby squab. At the Seder this year the menu will include whitefish in champagne sauce, and rack of veal - a rare delicacy for kosher food eaters, all alongside more traditional dishes, such as matzo ball chicken soup. The traditions at the Seder include drinking four goblets of wine; eating matzo, the traditional unleavened bread; and eating grated horseradish, known as “maror”, or “bitter herbs”, to commemorate the tough times endured by the Jews during their enslavement by the Egyptians. For more information, call Beverly Hills Synagogue at 310-276-7650 or email office@YINBH.ORG.

training for health professionals. By Matt Lopez Just when it appeared the battle between Bel-Air homeowners had come to an end, the Bel Air Association’s ousted former leadership has thrown up a last-minute hail mary attempt. The Bel-Air community spoke loudly and unanimously against the BAA’s previous status quo on March 17, electing a slate of nine new boardmembers and introducing sweeping new, transparent bylaws in a special meeting held at the Bel-Air Country Club. Since then, the brushback from the ousted leadership, including former president Ronald Hudson, has been immense. As the newly-elected leaders began their duties working on behalf of home-

owners, including changing the locks to the BAA offices and securing control over the BAA’s finances and communications methods, Hudson took the fight to the courtroom. First came a request for a Temporary Restraining Order, which was flatly denied by L.A. Superior Court judge, the Mitchell Beckloff. Then, just days after Hudson sent a mailer out to Bel-Air Homeowners, erroneously still representing himself as BAA president and announcing that the group’s April meeting would be postponed, a pending lawsuit Hudson has filed against the organization’s new leaders was dismissed. After that dismissal, it appeared the (see ‘BEL-AIR’ page 18)

Beverly Hills Public Library Hosts Annual ‘Food For Fines’ Next Week By Victoria Talbot Library cardholders with overdue books can ditch the late fees if they bring non-perishable food items instead from April 10-17 during the annual Food-for-Fines program. To celebrate National Library Week, the BHPL will collect donations of food for the Westside Food Bank, waiving fines up to $5 for adults. Children who wish to return books will have their fines waived with or without donations.

“Whether you have library fines or not, everyone in the community is invited to drop off food donations,” said Marilyn Taniguchi, library services manager. In past years, the library has donated barrels of food for children and families in crisis, for the homeless and unemployed and the most vulnerable members of our community. beyond the food. The Los Angeles-based firm has since become internationally known as one of the most influential and technologically advanced architectural collaboratives,” according to the Los Angeles Conservancy website. The City staff, CHC Liaisons Chair Lisa Greer and Commissioner Ralph Waldo, and the property owner’s team worked to achieve preservation and the owners could work with. Both sides agreed to the exterior features, reaching consensus that both buildings were historically significant and agreeing to a list of significant features, up to that point. When the CHC met in January to discuss nomination of the property, the commission felt they had not included the groundbreaking historic interior features that significantly defined the historic intent of preservation. The CHC directed staff to examine the interior space of the Kate Mantilini building and to list character-defining features of the interior space. That list included the Wehrle mural and the orrery. It also included the steel beam and concrete column structural framing at the west foyer, the steel structural framing, vertical beam and glass block wall at the east, sculptural medal door handles, a metal telephone booth, floor to ceiling proscenium-like wall planes along south and west sides of dining hall area, metal coat rack hooks and dowels; and the volume and spatial

relationship of the dining hall and west entry foyer. Just before Wednesday’s meeting, representatives for the owner delivered a letter rejecting the new assessment and challenging the legal right of the CHC to determine any interior features for preservation. It appeared for a moment as if the project would be continued again, but Commissioner Noah Furie pushed ahead. Pursuing common ground, finding areas of concession, the commission took some hits with the intention of achieving agreement. The Commission agreed to include the mural, orrery, and the volume and spatial relationship of the dining hall and west entry foyer, dropping the other components and achieving consensus. “The Gibraltar/Kate Mantilini project has, to our delight, now been formally recommended for landmark designation,” said Commission Chair Lisa Greer. “We are looking forward to adding this important and significant property to our ever-growing roster of protected properties in Beverly Hills. Because of the joint work of the property owners, city staff, consultants and CHC task force, we have been able to create a win-win result. I hope that this experience becomes a model of collaboration between preservationists and property owners – showing that the City of Beverly Hills can protect and encourage property owners while also preserving the integrity of our city.” The CHC voted 4-1 (Rebecca Pynoos dissenting).

DAVID BOHNETT (Continued from page 1)

His status report: Last season 200 performances had a paid attendance of more than 50,000 with a third of the attendees from Beverly Hills. Fifty student matinees served more than 10,000 students, staff spent 20 hours at 10 partner schools for music and arts education, and local schools enjoyed workshops and performances. Involved with the performing arts center since its inception, he committed an initial $1 million gift; and was part of the campaign to raise more than $35 million to build the institution. “This is a tremendous moment of opportunity for The Wallis,” says Bohnett, “as we are soon to announce our fourth season with 300 performances across all genres—theatre, music, dance, film, family shows and education programs.” Crewes will be bringing back another production in collaboration with Kneehigh Theatre, which he left to join the Wallis, and which presented a highly successful production of Brief Encounter in the first season. “We also have a close relationship with the City—they’re our landlord— and we’re looking to develop more ways to serve the needs of citizens.” Always interested in technology, Bohnett studied computer science and earned a bachelor’s degree from USC and then an MBA from the University of Michigan. He started his career with Andersen Consulting, which became Accenture. This background in software technology led to his founding GeoCities in 1994. “I was fascinated with early online services like AOL, Prodigy and CompuServe before the web,” said Bohnett, “and I started reading about the World Wide Web and I wanted to create a site that gave everybody a chance to meet people of similar interests.” He was an early pioneer and champion of the concept of free home pages and on GeoCities people could create free pages in communities of interest like sports, finance and theatre. “We had millions of users who set up pages.” Bohnett recalled.

The early social network company—a forerunner to Friendster, Myspace and Facebook—went public in 1998. When GeoCities sold to Yahoo in 1999, Bohnett established the David Bohnett Foundation which has awarded more than $80 million in grants to a variety of nonprofits focused on social justice as well as performing arts, like The Wallis. His Beverly Hills-based venture capital fund, Baroda Ventures, focuses on investments in early-stage tech start ups, primarily in Southern California. “They submit business plans and we suggest funding, and help them grow.” One company the firm is actively involved with is Beverly Hills-based FilmOn, providing video streaming and hundreds of video channels across all subjects. Bohnett, a former 20-year resident, moved to Roxbury Drive when he cofounded GeoCities, and he’s had his business and foundation office in his South Beverly Drive building ever since. The building is home to two retail businesses, the Beverly Hills Bikini Shop and Cottoniere, selling handmade clothing from Peru. He is also vice chairman of the board of the LA Phil (he was chairman for five years) and is heading up the orchestra’s centennial campaign to raise $400 million, following his own $20 million personal commitment. “We want to continue the tradition as one of the world’s preeminent orchestras,” reports Bohnett. “We want to recruit the best players and insure we have the financial capacity to go on tour and fulfill our education mission.” The Youth Orchestra LA (YOLA) provide free instruments, intensive music training, and academic support to students from underserved neighborhoods, teaching hundreds fo kids. His introduction to LACMA was in 1977 when he was tour guide at Universal Studios and attended a double feature as part of the museum’s classic film series of Mildred Pierce and Whatever Happened to Baby Jane. Classic film, dramatic theatre and contemporary classical composers like Philip Glass and John Adams remain his personal favorites.

Council Votes To Enter Agreement With Townscape Partners on Gehry Project By Victoria Talbot The Council voted 4-1 with Mayor John Mirisch dissenting, to approve a deposit agreement of up to $1 million for the public evaluation of the Townscape Partners Development proposal by architect Frank Gehry. The developer is proposing a 99-year lease of the City’s last remaining underdeveloped land for a mixeduse development including a hotel, residential, office and retail space that would also include a park on approximately 6.5 acres in the City’s Entertainment District. The decision authorizes a public review process that will allow the developer to discuss the proposal with the public. The $1 million will be

used to cover the cost of a fair-market appraisal of the property, economic and financial studies, land use planning studies, the cost of preparing an RFP if issued, public notice costs, and the legal and support staff overtime costs. In a letter to the Council, Beverly Hills Municipal League President Thomas White said,”Approval would grant a conspicuously unfair and undeserved advantage to a single developer on a proprietary basis. . . The council would be providing an implied endorsement.” “Any private developer is at all times free to communicate with its own independent advertising, marketing and direct mail campaign, and has unfettered access to

the public… The City simply does not need Townscape or any of its associated entities to “co-brand” its communications to residents.” Mayor Mirisch pulled the item from the consent calendar. “I agree with Thomas White,” he said. “The City owns this property. We should be fronting this; we should do it and fund it,” not Townscape Partners. “At any point we can pull the plug,” said Councilmember Lili Bosse. “We have complete control.” The council voted 4-1 to enter into the agreement with Angelo Gordon Real Estate, Inc.Townscape Partners to conduct the evaluation and public process for the property at 336 Foothill Road and 9268 Third Street.

Skirball’s ‘Chasing Dreams’ Exhibit Pays Tribute To Jackie Robinson, Ichiro, Koufax, Greenberg And Other Minority Baseball Legends By Matt Lopez Batter up! The Skirball Cultural Center’s newest exhibit took the field on Wednesday and it pays tribute to baseball heroes who paved the way for generations of American Jews and other minorities. Chasing Dreams: Baseball & Becoming American opened Wednesday, paying tribute to gamechangers of baseball – everyone from star players, to vendors, team owners, minor leaguers, scouts and broadcasters, who challenged the status quo. The exhibit is a baseball fan’s dream - historic memorabilia in the display includes signed baseball cards, awards, game-used jerseys, cleats and gloves from some of baseball’s greatest minority players. Among many, the exhibit pays tribute to players like former Dodgers star Jackie Robinson, who broke baseball’s color barrier in 1947; slugger Hammerin’ Hank Greenberg, the first Jewish superstar in American team sports; Ichiro Suzuki, the Japanese superstar who left an indelible mark on baseball when joining the Seattle Mariners in 2001 and immediately winning MVP; Sandy Koufax, one of the greatest pitchers in baseball history, who famously chose not to pitch game 1 of the 1965 World Series because it fell on Yom Kippur and Fernando Va l e n z u e l a , the Mexicanborn former Dodgers pitcher who sparked “Fernando-Mania” when he took baseball by storm in the early 1980s. since moving into the City with Jacob, affectionately known as “Rabbi Jack”, more than 65 years ago. Rabbi Jack, with Margie at his side, served as an assistant rabbi at Sinai Temple before taking over as rabbi at the Olympic Jewish Center, which he turned into Temple Beth Am, a congregation he led for 35 years. Rabbi Jack passed away in October. Born Marjorie Steinberg in Philadelphia, Margie graduated from the University of Pennsylvania before taking on the

RENNY DARLING KLEIN (Continued from page 1)

“At every meal, there was a salad, a fish course, a main course and several desserts,” she recalled. Her parents, each of whom was one of seven children, emigrated from Greece before the Nazi’s rise to power eliminated the bulk of Jews in Greece. Renny’s great uncle, a wealthy playboy of sorts, had heard rumblings of what was to come while traveling in New York, and her parents’ relatives had heeded his advice to set sail for America. “Our life was very family and temple oriented,” Renny recalled of her early childhood, which was punctuated with painting classes and ballet lessons. Until she was 16, Renny was not allowed to attend a party where boys were present, and innocent contact such as hand-holding with a member of the opposite sex was strictly forbidden. Renny was steadfast in her obedience she recalled–not that she had any choice as her two older brothers were always watching. An adept sailor, Renny was part of a club that was hosting the State Cross Atlantic Championship Week one year when she was 18. A week before the competition was set to begin, Renny and her crew sailed their boat out on a particularly windy day that resulted in the boat’s mast being ripped off. Without a functioning boat of her own, she spent the days of the race on the committee boat and it was there she met Harry, her husband of 61 years. “If I didn’t meet him then, we never would have met,” she surmised. “Our worlds were so far apart.” Their first encounter was fraught with the romantic undertones that make up the best of love stories. “Harry took my hand and helped me go down the ramp,” she recalled. He was 26 at the time, which she remembered thinking was “so old”.

role of rebbetzin and moving to Beverly Hills with Rabbi Jack in 1950. Margie told The Courier in a 2015 interview that she refused to be defined by the stereotypical role of a rebbetzin. “Some people said, ‘You just can’t do anything else.’ But I didn’t buy that,” she said. “In my case, it was whatever I made it.” Through her time in Beverly Hills, Margie maintained a close relationship with nearly all of the congregants of Temple Beth Am, immersing herself completely in the synagogue life.

Margie remained active in several fundraising efforts, including fundraising on behalf of the Sheba Medical Center in Israel. She helped bring the Israel Expo to Los Angeles. Margie stood tall through several painful losses in recent years, including the death of a daughter-in-law and the Pressman’s son Joel, a beloved former Beverly Hills High drama /music teacher. Pressman is survived by daughter Judith, son Rabbi Daniel Pressman of Beth David Congregation in Saratoga; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

BHEF (Continued from page 4)

Gibbons said it is critical to strengthen the partnership between local schools and the business community. Last year the BHEF raised $600,000 that went directly to programs at Beverly Hills schools. “It’s very synergistic,” she described. “Even though Beverly Hills is known as a tourist town, we are really a small village and we have a dedicated group of involved people. I think parents and grandparents are motivated when they see a local business supporting schools to support the business in return.”

WILLIE BRIEN Harry pursued her steadily, not put off by her refusal to dance with him at the black tie dinners that followed the daily races. His calls to her house asking for a date were routinely denied, that is, until she agreed to go sailing with him. “For some reason, we never left port,” she recounted. “We sat around talking and laughing.” Today, she counts six grandchildren–the apples of her eye–as a result of their serendipitous encounter. Once married, they moved into a little apartment beside Central Park and Harry worked as an educationalist psychologist. Then in 1957 Renny’s sister, who had moved to California, sent them a picture of her in a bathing suit, enjoying the sunshine on New Year’s Eve. The image embedded itself in their minds and they set their sights on moving to California. “It was predicated on a picture,” Renny exclaimed. “We didn’t know anything about California.” They moved first to a house in Encino Village before making Beverly Hills their home for life. Renny’s sister, a Beverly Hills resident, kept enticing her over the hill–”She said, ‘Oh my God’ this and ‘Oh my God’ that”–but it was ultimately the schools that convinced the family to move into Beverly Hills. “I can’t explain it, but it felt like home from day one,” Renny described the house that she still lives in today. “Beverly Hills is a small town in a big city. I love the City; I love the people; I love the ideals.” And she loved how her children could walk to Beverly Vista from their house. “Our house was just like my mother’s,” she described. Her three children always brought their friends over and Renny was always cooking. In 1969, Renny decided to start a recipe of the month subscription club. It wasn’t long before she had 3,300 subscribers for her 18-page booklet, for which she charged 35 cents a copy.

In 1971, she became a food columnist for The Beverly Hills Courier, which ran her column for two years. She still has a copy of her first recipe column, which was for Nutcracker pumpkin pie with Galliano whipped cream. One day, a friend of her husband’s suggested she create a cookbook. He promised to help see the whole endeavor through and had a grand vision for the book, which he planned to price at $25. But at the last minute, the man ended up pulling out. So Renny decided to publish her cookbook in a manner that aligned with her vision; a paperback priced for $5.95. She had it printed by two women who ran a small press in Santa Monica and then set about getting the book placed in homes. She still remembers getting Dalton’s on Beverly Drive to carry it and selling out the few copies she’d given the bookstore within a day. And it wasn’t just in Beverly Hills that the book became a success. She sold 2,000 copies the first week after it printed; 5,000 were gone within a month. Soon, she’d sold 30,000 copies and the cookbook was on the bestseller list and selling like hotcakes in Harrods in London, shops in Paris and all over the world. It became the first of many cookbooks she authored. “I never dreamed that I would ever use cooking as a career,” she said. “The orders were overwhelming.” But even more stunning than her success, Renny said, was the content of the letters she received thanking her for publishing. People would write how her recipes had saved their life; nurtured an ill relative; or even allowed them the ability to convince others that they were a whiz in the kitchen. And much like a good meal, for Renny, Beverly Hills remains an epicurean paradise where dreams really do come true.

new BAA could proceed with its important work, undeterred, doing what many in the community felt the previous leadership failed to do - protect homeowners from brazen developers and illegal construction occurring in their neighborhoods. “It is sad that Ron Hudson and Bruce Kuyper appear to be more willing to fight people elected to protect Bel-Air residents than they ever were to fight developers trying to illegally push forward construction,” New Board Chair Marcia Hobbs said. “The new Bel-Air Association boardmembers plan to continue doing what they were elected to do, which is be the voice of residents in Bel-Air who don’t have the power to speak out against millionaire megamansion developers and to change the rules that presently exist in the City of Los Angeles that favor excessive development over protection and conservation of neighborhoods.” That all changed Tuesday, when it was revealed that after Hudson’s suit was dismissed, former BAA counsel Bruce Kuyper filed a similar lawsuit in Downtown L.A. The nine newly-elected BAA boardmembers (Marcia Wilson Hobbs, Jim Hyman, Maureen Levinson, Dan Love, Jamie Meyer, Steven Myers, Tawny Sanders and Gail Sroloff and Nook Suphamongkhon) are still attempting to regain access to all the items that were taken from the organization’s property by Hudson and former Executive Director Paulette DuBey. DuBey finally returned her BAA computer on Thursday, but all documents and stationary are in Hudson’s possession are still outstanding. “It’s the same lawsuit Mr. Hudson brought, asking for the same relief in a different court in Downtown LA. So simply put, they did not like the decision, they did not like the Judge and they did not like the venue - Santa Monica Courthouse - so they are in essence forum shopping.” said Fred Rosen, a member of the BAA. Kuyper told The Courier late Tuesday that the suit “was filed to obtain a judicial determination confirming that the ‘special meeting’ purportedly held on March 17 was completely invalid.”

Singer/dancer Paula Abdul has been named honoree for its 29th anniversary at The Beverly Hilton on Sunday, April 24. PDS President Mitzi Gaynor and Board Chair Joni Berry, who also chairs the event, made the announcement and told us that legendary entertainer Dick Van Dyke will receive “The Dance Legacy Award” while veteran choreographers Carl Jablonski and Kevin Carlisle will be accorded the “PDS ChoreograPaula Abdul phy Awards” for their countless contributions to dance. PDS is an affiliate of The Actors Fund of America. Any major golf tournament that has been around for 45 years is sure to build up a treasure trove of traditions. But this years’ ANA Inspiration also captured an impressive list of “firsts” as well. Previously known as the Kraft Nabisco Championship, the tournament was founded in 1972 by David Foster and Dinah Shore, is reverently referred to by Desert golfers as “The Dinah Shore” and holds the distinction of being the second oldest tournament continuously held at the same course … Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage. Last year, All Nippon Airways began its sponsorship of what is now known as the ANA Inspiration, retaining two of its unique features: the winner’s jump into Poppy’s Pond – that body of water surrounding the 18th green - and an athletic lure to hundreds of female golfers who travel from all over the world to support, mingle and party with their favorites. Adding to the ANA Inspiration’s list of first’s was Caitlyn Jenner, the first openly transgender woman to play in the ANA tournament’s one-day proam. And, for those who might think that getting Jenner to play was just a publicitystunt, they only had to watch her perform off the first tee, garnering an eagle on the four-par hole. It was Abby Wambach, who created the pro-am’s biggest response when she was the first non-golfer to defy tradition and break the sanctity of Poppy’s Pond by taking an unauthorized leap into the water. There were tfour additional firsts at this year’s ANA Inspiration. These include the winner of the ANA Junior Inspiration receiving the final amateur exemption into the tournament field. The second new tradition is that the world’s best women athletes, not just golfers, will headline the ANA Inspiring Women in Sports Conference to be held during Inspiration-week. This year’s participants were Missy Franklin, Jessica Long, Julie Foudy, Lindsey Vonn, Abby Wambach and Kristie Yamaguchi. Thirdly, this year’s tourney featured a new sport: FootGolf. which melds together European football with golf. It is played with a regulation soccer ball on shortened golf holes with 21-inch diameter cups into the green. Other than that the rules of golf prevail. Though relatively unheard of, FootGolf has more than 460 certified and accredited participation golf facilities. The final first: Lydia Ko, the world’s #1 female golfer who strengthened her hold on that ranking with her win at the ANA Inspiration. ****** It’s time to get your Aston Martin out of the garage. The United Way of the Desert has announced that its annual VIP gala, “Shaken, Not Stirred,” will be May 6 at the luxurious RitzCarlton, Rancho Mirage. Sporting a James Bond theme, the gala will welcome guests to a cocktail reception with signature martinis, and a chef-prepared dinner with wine. Call 760-323-2731 (ext. 25).

BEVERLY HILLS

Chairman 2014 Paula Kent Meehan President & Publisher Marcia Wilson Hobbs

Guest Editorial by Robert K. Tanenbaum

THE ROAD MORE TIMID While reflecting on the state of our politics, Winston Churchill quipped that the best argument against democracy was to have a 10 minute conversation with the average voter. So too, one can argue, is to witness how elected representatives become compromised and corrupted by cronyism and mindless obeisance to city staff reports. Recently at City Hall, a confluence of corrupt complicity has become the new normal. It doesn’t take a fiery polemicist to be appalled by the dissolution of the Rule of Law – let’s see why. It’s been four and a half months since 196 trees were clear cut on the arsenic contaminated soil embracing Parcels denoted 12 and 13, located in the area between the south side of Santa Monica Boulevard and Civic Center Drive, stretching out eastward from City Hall for approximately five acres. All of the clear cutting was done in violation of the state’s EPA Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) directives. City Manager Mahdi Aluzri, senior staff, and the city attorney, all were on notice that the DTSC is the lead agency that regulates and monitors contamination present on all land, public and private, and is responsible for monitoring the soil conditions and overseeing any work that takes place on Parcels 12 and 13, the arsenic contaminated strip. From as early as June 17, 2015, up through Nov. 18, the city manager and his team were noticed in writing and verbally by DTSC that No Clean Up would be permitted on the site without DTSC approval that would also require its oversight, management, and supervision. Nevertheless, despite these DTSC admonitions, the city manager permitted the clear cutting to occur on Nov. 21-22. Significant to note that City Manager Aluzri for the first time finally notified the members of the Beverly Hills City Council at 5:22 p.m. on Nov. 20, the early evening before the chop down was to occur. In his after-hours notice, Mr. Aluzri advised that the trees would be cut down soon, knowing that it was to occur the next morning on Nov. 21. In the weeks following the wrongful clear cutting, the city manager created and disseminated, in concert with senior staff, a false narrative that was told to the public and councilmembers which bespoke deceitful misrepresentations, to wit: “the trees were on private property and the City had to give a permit to the property owner.” In fact, no permit was ever given. Both the toxic contaminated private and public property are under the jurisdiction of DTSC which Mr.

property are under the jurisdiction of DTSC which Mr. Aluzri was well aware. Also, in excess of 92 trees were situated on public property. The city manager well knew that the public message was false and disseminated it with reckless disregard for the truth. Yet, in an interview with The Courier that appeared on March 18, Councilmember Julian Gold described, in substance, City Manager Mahdi Aluzri as a “great new leader.” Mr. Aluzri violated and ignored state mandates, failed to notice councilmembers in a timely fashion about the clear cutting, and then falsely informed the public about the entire misadventure. On Jan. 5, the city attorney submitted an alleged investigative report regarding the matter. When asked to reveal the depth and scope of its investigation, the City Attorney disclosed that the only individuals inquired of were the lawyer for the property owner, Lyn Konheim, and senior staff members at City Hall. No one from DTSC was spoken to and the City Attorney report was devoid of the unequivocal admonitions and directives issued by DTSC. At the public hearing on January 5, 2016, and thereafter, Councilmember Willie Brien praised and supported the city attorney’s report, the City Manager Aluzri, and property owner Lyn Konheim. Most recently, after a meeting with Mayor John Mirisch on March 18, residents in attendance requested a meeting with the city manager in the mayor’s office. During the week of March 21, the residents were informed by Mayor Mirisch that he had arranged a meeting with Mr. Aluzri scheduled for 11 a.m. on March 30. By week’s end, Mr. Aluzri changed his mind and cancelled, alleging that a special counsel is going to be hired to investigate the matter. To date, as of this writing, no one at City Hall has been held accountable. It’s just business as usual. Julian Gold’s praise of Mr. Aluzri in The Courier interview of March 18, sends a sad message to the public as does Willie Brien’s comments regarding Mr. Aluzri and his support for the city attorney report of Jan. 5: principles, integrity, and excellence in job performance may be fine aspirationally, but don’t let them get in the way of friendship and cronyism. Gold and Brien may choose the road more timid but those committed to the Rule of Law will remain bold and assertive demanding justice. Robert K. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR As residents, the Akhtarzad family is endorsing the Beverly Hills Garden & Open Space initiative on the November ballot. We believe it is the right thing for our City. The Beverly Hilton site has long needed revitalization and the prepared initiative greatly improves the plans for the site. Residents have a chance to have a say on what they would prefer–two buildings or one building with a garden. Through this petition, it places the initiative on the ballot. That being said, we believe we have nothing to and might have something to gain. Kourosh Akhtarzad and Family ****** A circulator for the petition to put the revised Beverly Hilton Plan on the ballot in November knocked on my door yesterday. He told me that this would be the tallest building in Beverly Hills and, with the initiative, the residents can decide if they want this 26 story project. I signed the petition and then asked him why The Beverly Hilton would want to put it on the ballot and risk denial when it already had City approval. He did not know the answer but called someone from my doorstep to get the answer for me. I was told that the project has not been approved by the City. Finding out that my original understanding was incorrect, I immediately scratched my name off of the petition. If you do not want to see a new, 26 story building, then don't sign the petition. Why risk skewed and deceptive information and downright spin regarding this project which may lull enough voters to get this revised project passed, especially since the City has not given its approval. Have we ever seen a developer present an accurate and honest presentation of an oversized project to Christine Skirmuntt Ford the voters?

Editor’s Note: In 2008 voters approved an 8story building on Wilshire Boulevard and Merv Griffin Way and an 18-story building on Santa Monica. This new initiative is to move the 8-story building from Wilshire to the top of the 18-story building on Santa Monica. Replacing the Wilshire building will be a 1.7-acre garden with a recorded covenant that the garden will always be available for public use. ****** To the residents of Beverly Hills, given what has been going on in our City over last six to eight months (but actually longer), I have created a new series for the mass media. Being a comedy drama, it is a series based upon The Beverly Hillbillies. However, this one is not abouton the people moving to Beverly Hills because the made a lot of money from the oil and gas industry. No, this one is due to the development overbuilding of our City that was part of its Centennial and put in place 30 years before by former Mayor Richard Stone !! There are rules and restrictions for building heights in Beverly Hills. Now case after case has come to the City Administration and the City Council (e;g Townscape did last Tuesday at the council meeting) that raise questions and issues about the City's rules and restrictions. And even more since the Hilton “Garden” and Wanda Building among others coming. The City had passed a Sustainability Plan in 2009 and then further approved in 2014 for the near future when the water crisis ends. None of this has happened. So the new comedy drama is “Beverly Building Bullies” which I have registered. Stay tuned as this will be a big success for all the residents. Dr. Woodrow W. Clark II

Astrology By Holiday Mathis TODAY'S BIRTHDAY (Apr. 8). This will be an ambitious time for you, as you see gleaming potential in a situation that's just out of your reach. Education will close the gap. Put your time and money into that in June and don't stop until you have the certificate in your hand. You'll take a road trip, meet like minds and find much inspiration in August. Libra and Pisces adore you. ARIES (Mar. 21-Apr. 19). Go at the project with a mix of two parts logic and one part intuition. Why so heavy on the logic? Well, you don't want to discount your inner knowing, but you need to test and measure extra carefully on this one. TAURUS (Apr. 20-May 20). You're kind to the one who is kind to you, and also kind to the one who is not. This is further proof that kindness is who you are, and not the means to an end. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Your optimism, based on nothing at all, is nonetheless wholehearted. This blind and buoyant optimism is the best kind of optimism you could have today, and you will be richly rewarded for your faith. CANCER (June 22-July 22). Just because you hold a certain belief for many years, that does not make it automatically true. But because this belief has been with you so long, even when you declare it false, it will take some time to fall out of the rotation. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Keep the receipts, because there's a good chance there will be some returns later. This isn't about making mistakes; it is about getting closer and closer to the very specific answer to your problem. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). A feeling about a special relationship will come over you this weekend. It may seem to you the whole universe exists just to bring this magic combination together. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Nope, it's not your imagination. You are being tested, and even scored in some way. When you do well, you'll be let deeper into a situation or relationship. This is where all the gold is, by the way. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Irritants come in many forms: perfumes, pollen, people. Ultimately, it doesn't matter what or who is to blame. You still have to rise above the irritant. Tolerance will set you free. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Your physical sensations are important, but not overly so. Be careful not to magnify their impact on the situation at hand. You'll make gains by being tough, able and focused on the bigger picture. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). The worry is positive if it causes you to make an action plan. For that matter, mistakes can be positive, too, and so can arguments. Forward momentum will be caused by disruption. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). There is more around to cause alarm than harm. Resolve not to let yourself get so apprehensive keeping you from exploring exciting new avenues. PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar. 20). Grass grows all by itself. Good! You appreciate this landscaping development, but know better than to waste precious energy focusing on what is out of your control.
