Planning Commission To Talk Lago Vista Wednesday

GIVING BACK— Over the last several weeks, Kris Milliken’s fifth grade class at Beverly Vista has participated in a service learning project to raise money for the John Lege Project, which is a charitable organization that is committed to aiding African children who are victims of violence, abuse and poverty. The class easily surpassed its original goal of $1,000 to end up raising more than $2,700. Fine Arts Theatre Among Three Set For Landmark Designation By Victoria Talbot The Ahyra Fine Arts Theatre, originally known as The Regina, located at 8554 Wilshire Blvd. is one of three properties that will go to City Council with a recommendation to be included in the Beverly Hills Register of Historic Properties from the Cultural Heritage Commission (CHC). Built in 1937 by Master Architect B. Marcus Priteca in the Art Deco style, the theatre will cel-

ebrate 80 years on April 21. The theatre continues to operate under the Laemmle Theatre management, showing independent and foreign films. “It is a very significant property,” said Vice Chair Noah Furie. “I bought this theatre for the beauty of it,” said owner Shawn Farr. The theatre has been upgraded with state-of-the-art equipment, (see ‘LANDMARKS’ page 8)

By Laura Coleman Beverly Hills High School class of 2017 is celebrating an impressive number of college acceptance letters just five weeks before graduation as students now get down to deciding just where they will attend this coming fall. “We’re a public school and we got into every major college in the U.S., we got into every Ivy league,” extolled BHHS Principal Dave Jackson. “We must be doing something right.”

BHHS students are now sitting on acceptances from California Institute of Technology, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Chicago, Columbia University, Dartmouth College, Duke University, Georgetown University, Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University, New York University, Princeton University, Reed College, Rhode Island School of Design, Stanford University, University of California, Los (see ‘COLLEGE’ page 19)

By Laura Coleman From a missing contract with a consultant to a systemic pattern of change orders that resulted in millions of dollars of cost escalations without a competitive bid process, Tuesday night’s presentation and acceptance of the 2015-16 Measure E Performance Audit seemed rife with problems. Still, that didn’t prevent Board of Education President Mel Spitz from attempting to put a honky-dory spin on the 32page presentation prepared by Moss Adams LLP. “This is basically a good report,” Spitz stated, prompting a Moss Adams representative to subsequently concur. Such an assertion appeared to directly contradict

ire of the community. The agenda contains over 300 pages of letters against the project from scores of neighbors, including a petition signed by 30 homeowners. The 1260 Lago Vista project is a new single-family home on three levels. A portion of the lowest level, which qualifies as a basement under the current municipal code, will be 5,084 square feet. The entry level (middle) is 3,356 square feet and the upper level is 1,788 square feet according to Assistant Director of Community Development Ryan Gohlich. The total square footage is 10,228; code permitted exemptions for basements and parking areas bring the actual floor area to 6,750 square feet. (see ‘LAGO VISTA’ page 19)

By Victoria Talbot The Beverly Hills Planning Commission will hold a special meeting to discuss the proposed Lago Vista Project on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at City Hall. At issue is a request for an R1 permit to export in excess of the 1,500 cubic yards of soil permitted by right on hillside streets 24 feet or less in width, as per the new Hillside Ordinance. This is the first R1 permit request since the new ordinance was passed. While many residents believed that the ordinance would prohibit excessive exporting of soil, it actually only lowers the threshold from 3,000 cubic yards to 1,500 to trigger a review for an R1 permit, which is why there is a hearing. The project has drawn the

the report, which stated: “The district does not have well defined policies and procedures surrounding in-house and consultant staffing for the Bond Program.” Board of Education member Howard Goldstein, who served on the Measure E bond Citizen's Oversight Committee for two years before being elected to the board, tempered the audit’s criticisms by underscoring just how dramatically improved the district has become over the past years. “We are meeting compliance laws and regulations,” he said. “The items that are being pointed out now appear to be the exception not the norm.
