Unique Use Of Heart-Lung Machine Saves Heart Attack Victim At UCLA Emergency Room James Manzi is lucky to be alive. When the 79-year-old arrived at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center’s emergency room in full cardiac arrest, the medical team tried everything to stabilize him, including shocking his heart 29 times with a defibrillator in an attempt to restore a normal rhythm. Often, patients with heart attacks as severe as Manzi’s don’t survive. Only one out of every 10 people who suffer cardiac arrest outside the hospital lives through the ordeal. As the team worked, UCLA emergency medicine physician Dr. Eric Savitsky monitored Manzi’s diminishing response to their resuscitative efforts using a combination of bedside ultrasound of the heart and clinical indicators. This led to an emergency request for a rarely used but potentially lifesaving technology known as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, or ECMO. ECMO involves the use of a sophisticated pump that takes over the functions of the heart and lungs, essentially breathing for the patient by pumping oxygenated blood to vital organs so the lungs can rest. This helps reduce stress on the heart. The device is traditionally used to support adults in cardiac failure waiting for a heart transplant and to help protect the delicate respiratory systems of infants born prematurely. Fortunately, it worked in Manzi’s case as well. His heart stabilized, allowing the cardiac team to transport him to the cardiac catheterization lab, where he underwent coronary angioplasty on an artery that was completely blocked. Following the procedure, doctors placed a stent in the artery to keep it open; blood flow was completely restored.

At a recent follow-up visit, UCLA cardiologist Dr. William Suh, who performed the cardiac procedures, confirmed that the patient is doing well. Suh is an assistant clinical professor of medicine and interventional cardiology with the Geffen School Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. “I’ve always enjoyed my life and now appreciate it even more,” said the father of five, who also has six grandchildren. “Just being alive is wonderful.” The technology to perform ECMO requires a multidisciplinary team of specialized physicians, (see ‘HEART ATTACK,’ page 11)

On Online Shaming,Finding Mr. Perfect Q. Dear Dr. Fran: Why do parents resort to disciplining their children by shaming them online? Here are two links that show what I’m talking about. Ann H. A. Dear Ann: Thanks so much for bringing these two examples of parent posts to my attention. The first YouTube example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7q5 mgtUOI_w in my view, is not of parental shaming of the child, although the long term may be just that. Each parent in the first video, “Pucker Up”, seems to think her child’s reaction to sour citrus tastes is cute. The likelihood is most kids will grow up and be able to laugh it off, especially because these images were shot during the child’s infancy and toddler phase of childhood. The second example https://www. youtube.com/watch?v=NBUhV4seFHA is quite a different story —The voice of the rage-filled preschool girl who is clearly angry and distraught demanding her Mommy, is made fun of by her father while her entertained brother laughs at Dad’s performance. I think this Dad has resorted to humor, putdown, humiliation, and shaming as a result of his own helplessness. My fantasy is that he has made many previous attempts at calming his youngster down but failed repeatedly. His exasperation has brought him to this final low. Although the brief act is momentarily funny, it is clear to me that this father is ill equipped to deal with a young child’s anger. This child is likely to grow up and feel that her father doesn’t understand her, validate her feelings, or accept her and love her as she is—flaws and all.
Dr. Fran Walfish Answers Your Questions Every one of us is flawed. I am and so is her Dad. She wants what we all want. To be loved - defects and all! Q. Dear Dr. Fran: I hit the jackpot. I’ve met the perfect man. He’s got it all. He’s proposed marriage and I accepted. I’m a bit nervous. Is there anything more I should be looking into? Melissa G. A. Dear Melissa: Perfection does not exist. “If” a woman is with a man whom she perceives as “Mr. Perfect” (promising career, good looking, charismatic, loved by all), it may be useful and eye-opening for her to engage in a disagreement, debate, argument, or fight with her gentleman. Seeing how your partner deals with, wrestles with conflict reveals a great deal about his/her ability to give-and-take in a relationship. The key is for each person to tolerate strong different ideas and feelings and be able to bear listening without interruptions, blaming, judging, or putdowns. We are all flawed. All anyone wants is to be seen, validated, accepted, and loved–flaws and all.

Inside One Of Marion Davies Estates–The Lexington Road Home In Beverly Hills By Victoria Talbot A former home of Marion Davies and William Randolph Hearst is seated on 1.5 acres on Lexington Road. Originally built in 1923, Hearst purchased the home for Davies in her mother Rose's name. The structure was built among the most sought-after parcels in the City, near The Beverly Hills Hotel and the estates of King Gillette, Burton Green, Harry Robinson and Irving Hellman. The film stars that ultimately gave the City its reputation joined these pioneers of early business, including Davies' frequent guest, Rudolph Valentino. Charlie Chaplin was among her closest

friends and frequent visitors. In 1922 architect William Clark designed the home for T.A. Tooey. Davies acquired the home in 1925. The two-story Tudor Revival has a hipped roof that stretches down to the first floor on the west and is sheathed in brick and half-tim-

bered stucco. The home is seated majestically at the summit of the inclined driveway. An exaggerated gabled hood frames the entry. Diamond-paned casement windows are a feature throughout the home. To the right of the entry, a stunning sunken living room bears a beautifully detailed paneled ceiling. The back features a deep, grassy lawn and oversized pool with pergola. A colonnade follows the property line. There are four bedrooms and four baths and the house is 6,024-square feet. Davies was a talented comedienne and Ziegfeld Follies girl when she became the companion of newspaper mogul Hearst in 1916. He soon formed Cosmopolitan Pictures to produce films for her. Davies was one of Hollywood's most lavish hostesses. It is said that soon after acquiring the property, Davies built the grand ballroom for entertaining within a week. She made other alterations, including the dining room and bathrooms, and added a screening room in 1940. Davis was said to have used the home for her more intimate gatherings. She reserved the home on Santa Monica's Gold Coast for her larger af-

fairs, now the Annenberg Community Beach House. Hearst and Davies also held many events at the Hearst Castle in San Simeon. Davies Hollywood career spanned 1919-1937 when she retired from films to become a very successful business executive. The house was purchased in the late 1940's by Harry Cohn, president of Columbia Studios. It changed hands again and was sold to Aleen Leslie, a screenwriter, novelist and radio-writer. The Leslies lived in the home nearly 50 years, when the heirs sold it. Painted throughout with powder blue, the new owners have begun restoration. Their
plans include restoration of the best of the original house. Inside, the kitchen is surprisingly small amidst a maze of service quarters. Beneath the home, a basement room harbors three walk-in safes. Hearst objected to inebriation, and Davies enjoyed her cocktails. Could this have been where the alcohol was stored throughout prohibition? Was this an effort by Hearst to maintain the two-drink limit the mogul imposed on his guests? Like many old homes, we may never know. Listed in 2010 at $12.5 million, the house was sold in 2011 to its current owners, Linda and Syd Leibovitch, Founder, Rodeo Realty, Inc.

TED LIEU WALKS BEVERLY HILLS HIGH, GETS BRIEFED ON METRO (Continued from page 1)
proposed Westside Subway Extension tunnels underneath the school. Metro’s route, designed to benefit Century City development, specifically JMB’s proposed City Center, carries a $200 million higher price tag than the initially preferred route underneath Santa Monica Boulevard. The tunnels will go barely 40-feet beneath the schools’ 1929 buildings and underneath the central power station for Century City. The route cuts through dozens of abandoned oil wells and ground permeated by methane gas. Metro has argued in court that the route is “safer” than the Santa Monica Boulevard location because of alleged earthquake faults 900 feet away from its designated station at the corner of Constellation and Avenue of the Stars in the lower level of a proposed development by Chicago-based real estate develop giant JMB Realty. That location became Metro’s choice after JMB held a fundraiser for then-Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. Lieu told The Courier he previously had limited knowledge about the issue but welcomed the tour. “I appreciated the in-depth briefing and walk-through at Beverly Hills High School as well as the opportunity to hear the concerns about running a subway under the high school,” he said. Lieu was accompanied on the 2-1/2 hour tour by Beverly Hills Unified School District lead consultant Tim Buresh. Buresh was construction chief of Metro's Red Line and head of construction for the Los Angeles Unified School District. Buresh recounted how Metro’s superficial investigation, followed by opinions from unlicensed “experts,” forced Beverly Hills Unified School District to spend millions of dollars trenching its property to learn whether active earthquake faults exist under school buildings as alleged by Metro's experts. Trenching is the so-called “gold standard” for seismic investigations. BHUSD’s thorough research revealed no faults present, despite Metro’s contentions to the contrary. The California Geological Survey concurred, declaring the high school free of active faults BHUSD filed suit under the National Environmental Policy Act in federal court and the California Environmental Quality Act in state court. The federal judge has ordered Metro to consider BHUSD's trenching; the state court so far has refused. Buresh cited Metro’s plans
BEVERLY HILLS regarding depth of the tunnels - about 40-feet - as troubling. According to Buresh, the typical depth for a subway underneath a commercial building is 120-feet. However, adding depth to the proposed $1 billion segment to reach Constellation (as opposed to the $800 million price tag to build on Santa Monica Boulevard), adds $10 million for every foot deeper the project goes, Buresh said. He also noted that Metro now refuses to build subway tunnels into Los Angeles International Airport, citing terrorism concerns. When Beverly Hills raised the same concerns, Metro dismissed the concern as “hysterical.” JMB is now trying to circumvent restrictions in the 1981 Century City North Specific Plan adopted by Los Angeles, which governs development in Century City. The Plan’s stated goal is to protect “residential areas from encroachment by other types of uses.” JMB’s plans for a 37 story tower are vigorously opposed by the 1,350-member Beverlywood Homes Association in Los Angeles. BHA’s attorney, Benjamin Reznik of Jeffer Mangels, Butler & Mitchell LLP, denounced Metro’s traffic studies for the project as “based on totally flawed” methodology. Beverly Hills City Councilmember John Mirisch, who joined the visit, told Lieu one of the main problems with Metro is that unlike the Bay Area Rapid Transit, which is governed by a publicly-elected board, Metro’s leadership model is flawed. “There’s no accountability,” he said. Metro’s directors are the mayor of Los Angeles, all five county supervisors, and appointees. Only two members of Metro’s 15-member board of directors voted against the route underneath Beverly High, Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich and John Fasana. BHUSD boardmember Lewis Hall told The Courier following the meeting that he was glad Lieu was able to make time to visit the campus and listen to the concerns of the Beverly Hills Unified School District. “It means a lot to me that Sen. Lieu took the time to fully comprehend the situation with MTA and their desire to tunnel under our high school,” Lewis said. “I’m confident that he now understands the legitimate concerns of BHUSD and the City. I look forward to continuing to educate the public and stakeholders of all facts and issues.” Lieu told The Courier he would now reach out to Metro, “to give them the opportunity to respond.”

Garcetti pledged cooperation with other cities. “We are all tied together in this region and we need to widen the conversation and build coalitions that will position us to win a competitive global environment.” Garcetti's predecessor, Antonio Villaraigosa, and his appointees to Metro's board refused to acknowledge any of the interests or concerns of Beverly Hills.

BEL AIR SHOWDOWN WITH RESIDENTS AND PAUL KORETZ (Continued from page 1)
galvanized neighbors with grievances over similar recent decisions in the area. Koretz reiterated his position on the height variance, calling the 50-foot height both “reasonable” and “fair,” given that “the property owner preserve a natural creek on the property. This resulted in . . . a strange roof line.” “It is a very large property,” said one attendee who wished not to be identified. “There are multiple ways to build on the site.” She said that when the new hillside ordinance is finally applied, Koretz bypassed it. Koretz acknowledges that developer Arman Gabay is a “longtime acquaintance,“ but said the “reasons were practical.” “The meeting was not intended to resolve issues,” observed Koretz. “It was an ambush. It was the most insane meeting I have had in 30 years in politics.” Koretz explained that he had envisioned a small group of people meeting at his office. Instead, Koretz agreed to meet at the Bel Air Association office where fire regulations cap occupancy at 30. Finally, the meeting was conducted “in a parking lot,” he said, for those who could not get inside. “It was bizarre said Koretz. Koretz brought three uniformed police and three plainclothes security guards who were present through the Bel Air Association. Resident’s complaints centered on mega- sized homes under construction in the area, including a single-family residence at 944 Airole Way. The project is described as a twostory single-family dwelling with basement and ancillary structures on 3.9 acres totaling 85,154 sq. ft. according to project applicant Nile Niami. Neighbor Joe Horacek characterized the project as, “74,000 cubic yards of haul over a 3-7 years, with multiple pools and four kitchens,” noting that subterranean excava-

The project is representative of the overdevelopment issues in the neighborhood. It is a by-right project, meaning that if a developer wants to build something that fits within the zoning code, then the City's role is ministerial; the City doesn't exercise any discretion over whether the building is desirable or not, but simply whether the minimum requirements of the zoning and building code are being met. The hillside ordinance does not cap home size. “Clearly this is an area under siege,” said Koretz. “The positive side is that it has been brought to our attention. We need to do a follow-up and identify a few people to meet with and focus on the issues that need to be resolved.” Horacek brought photos of another project at 901 Strada Vecchia, under construction by developer Mohamed Hadid. Bordering on his property, Horacek says that despite his complaints, which went unanswered, when the rains hit last month, “the side of the hill slid down across my road and driveway and it is still a complete mess.” Horacek says that the City is completely unresponsive to his calls and emails. “I think people left extremely unsatisfied,” said resident Paula Rudnick. “What I want is to accomplish something.” Rudnick initially reached out to Koretz to request a meeting following the approval of the height variance. “People have very legitimate concerns in the neighborhood,” said Rudnick. She would like to come back to the table with a comprehensive list that would give homeowners tools to deal with traffic and streets that cannot absorb the wear and tear of 9000 haul trips on the Airole home. The narrow roads bear “No-Parking” signs because they are so narrow. “There will not be a repeat of this meeting,” said Koretz.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and
size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 877-484-9942 or 800280-2832 or visit this Internet Web site w w w . U S A Foreclosure.com or www.Auction.com using the file number assigned to this case 7233.25624. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. Date: April 11, 2014 NORTHWEST TRUSTEE SERVICES, INC., as Trustee Jeffrey Mosher, Authorized Signatory 1241 E. TRUSTING PAULA KENT MEEHAN WITH THE COURIER – A PERSONAL NOTE Our longtime friend, Paula Kent Meehan, has had an interest in The Courier for many years. We share the same love of Beverly Hills and the same commitment to the City. She will be an excellent steward of your newspaper. When I became publisher of The Courier 10 years ago, I wrote the truth: a newspaper belongs to its community, not any particular owner or publisher. Without the support and trust of its readers, a newspaper is just paper. The Beverly Hills Courier, founded by March Schwartz, a former executive with The New York Times (who just turned 93), immediately became the voice and conscience of Beverly Hills. For the last nine years, The Courier has ventured into public finance and accountabilily of public officials and employees. We have faced the wrath of the Metropolitan Transit Authority and our own Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky. Zev, whom I’ve known for over 20 years, is stepping down from the Board of Supervisors. He has served our community very well, but for some reason he is determined to jeopardize our children, school staff, school district and City. The Courier has been steadfast in exposing the threats to Beverly Hills. Well, people disagree. Serving as publisher of The Beverly Hills Courier has been the finest experience I have ever had. I love Beverly Hills – I have since I was about five years old. The best part of Beverly Hills is the magic created by its people. The community of Beverly Hills is warm, gracious and welcoming. Even the people who don’t like you are generally civil and courteous. Paula is a proven philanthropist with only the best of intentions. Her name now appears on the restored Beverly Hills Post Office as part of the new Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts. She is dedicated to helping our weakest members – our pets. She personally funded two Rose Parade floats to promote adopting homeless pets and promoting Beverly Hills. She intends to name Marcia Wilson Hobbs as my successor – a decision I heartily applaud. In the end, you–the readers and members of our community–will judge whether The Courier remains your trusted source for information. I have the highest confidence that you will continue to judge The Courier very, very highly as you now do. Sincerely, Clif Smith
...AND FROM PAULA KENT MEEHAN Lucky me. As a long-time resident of Beverly Hills and a great fan of The Beverly Hills Courier, it is very exciting for me to announce that I have just made an agreement to purchase the newspaper. Clifton Smith, the publisher of The Beverly Hills Courier, and his wife, Candace, have been friends of mine for many years. I appreciate his confidence in me. Marcia Hobbs, also a friend for many years, has been the associate publisher of The Courier and now will become the publisher. With the great leadership of Marcia, The Courier will continue to do well in the years ahead of us. As the previous owner of Redken Products, I know that listening and learning from the staff, readers and clients is incredibly important. So please, as I embark on this most exciting project, I will be asking for input and advice from you. I don’t know if I will have all the answers, but will certainly apply myself to listening and learning to ensure that The Courier has the right kind of news to fully answer the needs and questions of its readers. I need and want input from our readers to know what your questions are so we at The Courier can answer them and, hopefully heed such suggestions. Marcia Hobbs and I will want to hear from you and your ideas will be given every consideration. Thank you and I am look forward to this most exciting time as the owner of The Beverly Hills Courier. Thank you Paula Kent Meehan P.S—For many years, I have have owned Kenquest, my business on Cañon Drive in Beverly Hills. We will soon be relocating the offices of The Courier into my Kenquest building.
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR The Courier covers the planned new Waldorf-Astoria hotel as if it were only a good thing, without mentioning citizen opposition to the project, which was approved by a thin margin; without reporting concerns about density and overdevelopment; and neglecting to mention the already-gridlocked traffic from dawn to dusk at the intersection of Santa Monica Boulevard and Wilshire Boulevard, which will only get worse (if that were possible) with the construction of this inappropriate project and the planned over-development of the Robinson's May Company site. It may be a “seminal moment” in the Hilton organization's history, but it is a bad day for the citizens of Beverly Hills. Daniel Fink ****** I own and love to ride my bicycle. I also live in one of the country’s worst traffic congested areas, with the rudest and most careless drivers. Why in heaven's name would I place my life in jeopardy by riding my bike on the City's most busiest and dangerous of streets? This ain't Kansas Dorothy. Beverly Hills, like most cities, depends upon the movement of people and product for its economic survival. And, this movement at the moment uses automobiles and trucks to do the job. (To label what Metro provides as any kind of mass transit is an insult to the Transit Workers of America). To impede or interfere the flow of this traffic is selfish, self-serving and stupidly dangerous. To claim as cycling activists do, that bicycle lanes and its users will substantially reduce pollution and carbon footprints is unrealistic. Take a stroll along Santa Monica Boulevard in front of Westfield and observe the bike lane suddenly disappearing into traffic approaching from all sides. Or imagine the standoffs and hesitations between auto and cyclists at the right turn on red intersections. Why not discover many of our quiet, tree lined streets filled with beautiful homes or strap your bike to a bus or your car or train and visit a park or the beach or some mountain road and cycle away? P.S. To our City fathers and mothers–repair the streets, reset the timing on our street signals, install more left turn signals, strictly enforce all traffic regulations, and don't widen streets, don't destroy greenery simply because a group of very vocal “entitlementalists” demand their way. Robert Block ****** Regarding last week’s editorial about Russia and China flexing their muscles, our president is a good talker but has a weak spine when it comes to taking action to protect America’s international interests. One of the reasons the Soviet Union cried “uncle” in the 1980s was that Reagan spent a lot of money on national defense and the Soviets knew they could not come close to matching those expenditures. Our main problem today is that we have given away our treasure during the past 40 years and do not have the wealth to scare anyone. We need to drastically reform our business tax structure so there will be incentives for companies profiting from cheap overseas labor to return their manufacturing to the U.S.A. This would create jobs and tax revenue to help pay down our burgeoning, unsustainable debt. Richard N. Friedman, Esq.
