Architectural Commission OKs Infiniti Facade Remodel By Matt Lopez The proposed Beverly Hills Infiniti dealership leapt over another small hurdle Wednesday when it received facade remodel approvals from the Beverly Hills Architectural Commission. Infiniti was unanimously approved for its sandstone textured cement plaster facade on its 9001 Olympic Blvd. service center, but was instructed to return to the commission with updated landscaping and sig-

nage plans. So essentially, the building itself is approved, but some details around the property still need to be worked out. So as Beverly Hills resident Frances Bilak was hospitalized for nearly a year with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APL), a cancer of the blood and bone marrow, she did just that. She thought about her life, and began setting goals. “Each moment I was just ‘let me live to this point’, you know, ‘Dear God, let me live to hear my son say mommy,’” Bilak said. “Then one of my points was asking God to let

A Tale Of Design, Landscape Transformation By Laura Coleman For Westsiders looking for a leisurely way to spend an afternoon, the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts, which opens Sunday, offers a particularly inspirational journey for design afficionados. This year’s Showcase House - a repeat from 2000 when it had a white plaster facade - takes place in an architecturally ambiguous twostory brick Monterey Colonial in Arcadia that was built in 1941 for the Barker Brothers Furniture family. In preparation for the public unveiling, The Courier toured this quintessential California-style residence which showcases the skill of local designers and landscapers who were tasked with transforming the house and grounds at their expenses. The Enchanted Entry: Created by landscape design firm Pacific Outdoor Living to evoke grandeur and tranquility, the entry garden uses the existing sycamore and oak trees to frame the space, adding paving stones, a babbling brook and plantings that include lavender, iceberg roses, sculpted dwarf bushes, ferns and succulents. A meadering stream heralds the peaceful retreat inside. FAMILY TIME —Thoughtful details abound throughout the home, such as this custommade table in the Family Room that can be made taller.

UCLA Researchers Identify New Subtypes of Kidney Cancer Researchers with the Institute of Urologic Oncology and the Department of Urology at UCLA have classified kidney cancer into several unique subtypes; a finding that will help physicians tailor treatment to individual patients and moves cancer care one step closer to personalized medicine. The finding is the result of 10 years of UCLA researchers studying kidney cancers at the genetic and molecular levels, conducting chromosomal analyses in an effort to identify what mutations may be causing and affecting the behavior of the malignancies. Thousands of tumors removed at UCLA have been studied, said Dr. Allan Pantuck, a professor of urology and director of genitourinary oncology at UCLA’s Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center. Traditionally, pathologists study tumors under the microscope and predict their expect-

ed behavior by the way they look. However, tumors that appear the same often behave differently and oncologists need to know which are lower risk, which are more aggressive and which are more likely to spread, which makes the cancer much more difficult to treat. “Pathologists can give us some important information, but similar-appearing tumors often can and do behave differently,” Pantuck said. ”Our findings have us heading further in the direction of personalized medicine based on the molecular signature of an individual’s tumor. We still have a lot to learn, but are a step closer.” The study appears this week in the early online edition of Cancer, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society. Study Shows Rise In ADHD Among School Children A recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed an 11 percent rise in the diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in school-age children. Dr. Stephanie Marcy, licensed psychologist at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles says there are three subtypes of ADHD, with the two types of symptoms most present in kids being: • Inattentive, which includes careless mistakes, difficulty keeping attention, seeming not to listen, poor followthrough, difficulty with organization, avoidance of tasks that require constant effort, losing things often, and being easily distracted and forgetful. • Hyperactive/Impulsive, which includes a child being fidgety or squirmy, having difficulty remaining seated, extreme movement or restlessness, difficulty enjoying play activities quietly, “driven by a motor,” excessive talking, blurting out answers, difficulty waiting for their turn, frequent interrupting or intruding on others. Fat Feeds Leukemia Cells According To CHLA Researchers In a study reported in the current issue of Cancer Research, Dr. Steven Mittelman, and colleagues at The Saban Research Institute of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) report that obesity substantially impairs the ability of a first-line chemotherapy to kill leukemia cells. Not only can obesity cause cancer; this research indicates how it can significantly decrease a child’s odds of battling the disease if they get it. “This research really shines a light on how cancer cells avoid chemotherapy,” said Dr. Brent Polk, director of the institute. “As childhood obesity has become a global challenge, our understanding of how to beat cancer in children is advanced by these important findings.” Obesity is known to greatly increase one’s risk of dying from cancer. However, CHLA researchers were the first to show that this effect may also be present in children. Obese children diagnosed with high-risk acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) have a 50 percent greater risk of their disease recurring compared with those not obese. This new study shows that obesity may impair the activity of L-asparaginase (ASNase), a first-line choice of chemotherapy drugs for treating this disease. ASNase acts by breaking

down the amino acids asparagine and glutamine, building blocks that ALL cells need to survive and proliferate. The investigators found that fat cells produce these amino acids, and so decrease the ability of ASNase to eradicate ALL cells. How Body Weight Impacts Cancer In previous research using preclinical models, Mittelman has demonstrated that there are several ways obesity affects leukemia. Tips For Teaching Teens Compassion, Empathy

Q: Dear Dr. Fran, my wife and I are worried about our 16-yearold daughter. At times she can be cold, callous, and mean to us. Compassion does not seem to be part of her personality. Can this be taught? Please help us! Jason E. A: Dear Jason: empathy and compassion are learned best by experience. If the child is treated with warmth, empathy, and compassion, she has a high likelihood of becoming an empathic adolescent and adult. Of course, this empathic relating must begin at birth when the new mom responds to each of her infant’s cries/needs. This warm maternal response should carry through into the early and middle childhood years. You may ask: “What if this warm responsiveness did not occur in the child’s early life?” Can it be taught to a teen? The answer and final outcome depends on a number of complicated things. • Number one, and most importantly, the teen must personally want to become a compassionate, empathic person. Without that desire, the change will not happen. To change requires a tremendous amount of motivation and hard work. • If, indeed, the teen is motivated to change, he or she usually does best if they have a mentor. The mentor can be a parent, teacher, relative, minister, counselor, or therapist. It must be someone the teen looks up to,

admires/respects, and can trust. This opens the pathway for communication. You can tell the teen to treat the other person the way they want to be treated. But, without the idealized respect and trust it will fall on deaf ears. • Independence is earned by demonstration of responsible behavior. In other words, if your teen is responsible by consistent demonstration of getting his homework finished on time, coming home before curfew, going to sleep and rising on time— then he should be rewarded with increments of extra freedom and independence. These added freedoms need to be comfortable with both parents. Maybe, you let him stay out one hour later with his friends on Saturday night. Or, perhaps you allow him to go to a rock concert with his buddies. • Parents can help their teens by building in the expectation of reasonable failure. In other words, to be successful one must first experience rejection, failure, and disappointment. Learning to deal with inevitable letdowns only makes success, when achieved, that much sweeter. Personality development begins much younger in the toddler and early childhood years. By adolescence, personality is virtually set and gelled. • A key way parents affect teenage personality development is how they relate to their kids. If a parent is harshly critical

If during the infancy, toddler and early-childhood years, the parent does not consistently warmly read the child’s cues and needs accurately or the parent inconsistently responds to the baby, then the child grows up to be uncertain of where she stands in the mind of the mother (significant other). The child emerges with fear of abandonment and a black -and-white style of relating. She either loves or hates you. There is no gray in between. The personality is called Borderline Personality Disorder. There are many, many ways in which parents affect the type of personality organization their teen will develop. • Role models are crucial in a teen’s life. A highly-regarded, trusted, confidante (grandmother, aunt, teacher, priest, therapist) can save a teen from walking down the wrong path in life. A loving uncle can take his nephew under his wing and rescue a teen from family dynamics and the

temptation of evil (drugs, truancy, and delinquency). • Parents can serve as role models, as well. That’s why it’s so important for parents to be accountable for their errors. Own up to your mistakes. Teach your children to strive to be “good enough.” Help them see that perfection does not exist. When they err teach them to forgive themselves gently to remain motivated to keep trying. • Teens are well defended. They have developed and practiced skilled ways of locking parents out of information. Ask your teen a question and you are likely to hear words like, “Fine,” “Okay,” “Nothing’s up.” This frustrates parents greatly. Bottom line, open honest communication begins early on. It is nurtured and nourished all through the lifespan. Teens generally hate to be told what to do. • Make your suggestions by wondering out loud. For instance, say things like: “I wonder what you think about trying it like this sometimes,”or “Have you ever thought about what might happen if you did it this way?” Try to present your ideas by giving your teen an out if she doesn’t want to listen. Given that leukemia is the most common cancer in children and that the incidence of childhood obesity has reached epidemic proportions, there is an urgent need to intervene and prevent a potential increase in the number of children dying from leukemia. “Our immediate goal is to develop strategies to counteract these effects of fat cells and obesity,” said Ehsan Ehsanipour, a master’s student in the Mittelman lab, and first author on the Cancer Research paper. “For example, forms of ASNase which break down glutamine faster might have a better effect in obese children. “Other projected clinical studies include testing whether diet or exercise could help the prognosis of obese pediatric patients with leukemia,” added Ehsanipour..

Bilak and her husband Dorian were visiting family in Maryland when she woke up one morning and was unable to speak or type on her computer. As it turns out, Bilak had suffered three strokes overnight, the result of her Leukemia. After the strokes, she was admitted to Johns Hopkins for three months and eventually was transferred back to California where she was in the hospital at UCLA for much of the next seven months.

Bilak said the outpouring of support from the Beverly Hills community was “amazing” with the gifts and letters she received. Of course, the constant struggle with Metro ties into those construction plans. “I don't think we will be a viable school district if we have tunnels under the heart of that campus. I don't think people want tunnels under the high school,” Korbatov said. “We didn't ask for this.” Korbatov said she is also prepared to tackle budgeting and the possibility of a parcel tax. “We are going to have to figure out how to fund these schools because we can't rely on the state. Thank God for the (Joint Powers Authority agreement) JPA, thank God for the City and thank God for these amazingly generous residents,” Korbatov said. “We have a partner in the state of California that we cannot rely on.” Korbatov lists some of her proudest Board of Education accomplishments during her term as hiring Superintendent Gary Woods, the district’s litigation against former facilities director Karen Christiansen, the hiring of new principals at the K-8's, the improvement of API scores and the work of BHUSD consultant Tim Buresh.

Happenings Film Examines Jewish Mass Graves In Poland Safeguarding Memory: Commemorating Jewish Mass Graves In Poland, a 27-minute documentary narrated by actor Theodore Bikel will be broadcast at 10 a.m., Sunday, and Wednesday, April 24 on KCET. Poland is lined with mass burial grounds of thousands of Jewish Holocaust victims; and most of these sites have never been identified. Today some elderly Poles, who were teenagers at the time of these slaughters, are sharing details about the mass murders. Witnesses to the massacres, these Polish individuals have never been able to erase the nightmares of their hidden memories. The film relays some of their stories.

BEVERLY HILLS Hills City Council voted 3-2 to support Mirisch's resolution that takes a strong stand against Metro's attempts to tunnel under Beverly Hills High School. The resolution states: “(the) City Council's continued support of the Westside Subway Extension is contingent upon the route's NOT running under Beverly Hills High School.” Mirisch, Vice Mayor Lili Bosse and councilmember Nancy Krasne voted to support the resolution. Brien and Gold dissented. The resolution passed with a slight change requested by Krasne, who asked that the language be beefed up to make it clear that the council would not support tunnels going under any portion of the entire Beverly Hills High School campus. The approved resolution states the City “supports well planned mass transit” and makes it clear the City will benefit from the Westside Subway Extension, so long as it doesn’t run under Beverly Hills High School. Gold said he wouldn’t support the resolution because “it’s hard to start a negotiation with a threat.”

THE SCHOOL DISTRICT AND THE SUBWAY

I want to begin by thanking Mayor John Mirisch, Vice Mayor Lili Bosse and Councilmember Nancy Krasne for approving a clear and unambiguous resolution stating that the City of Beverly Hills’ support for the Westside Subway Extension is predicated on the MTA not tunneling under Beverly Hills High School. Unfortunately, two members of the City Council did not join the new council majority in unequivocally standing with the BHUSD in its fight to protect the safety of our students, ensure the ability to develop our only high school site in the future, and save the tax payers of Los Angeles County hundreds of millions of dollars just to move the subway 1,000 feet to appease and create a private windfall for wealthy developers based in Chicago. As a trustee of the district's assets, whether it is our students, staff, or the physical buildings, I am entrusted to protect them now and for the benefit of future generations. The planned tunnels under BHHS will severely limit our ability to develop our site. The MTA is not willing nor able to guarantee the safety of our students, staff, or community members. If you read MTA’s own Environmental Impact Report (EIR), it states that it may be able to mitigate the dangers but cannot eliminate them. One only needs to read local newspapers to learn the safety failures of MTA. The MTA does not have a perfect safety record, period. As one trustee, I am not willing to take any risk with our students, staff, or community for the benefit and profit of a wealthy developer. Regional Interests: We have heard complaints and arguments that Beverly Hills is not being a good neighbor and we should put “regional interests” above those of the safety of our students and ability to develop Beverly Hills High School. • Nobody can really articulate what those regional interests are–a subway stop on Santa Monica Boulevard will create just as many jobs as a subway stop on Constellation Boulevard. • A subway stop on Santa Monica Boulevard will reduce the traffic in the region just as much (if not more) than a subway stop on Constellation. • A subway stop on Santa Monica Boulevard will cost the tax payers of Los Angeles County hundreds of millions less than a subway stop on Constellation, freeing dollars to help support bus riders and other underserved and under-represented communities in desperate need of public transportation projects. The only “regional interest” that seems to matter to a majority of the MTA Board is helping a wealthy developer based in Chicago, Illinois, acquire trip credits for a large commercial development along with a large cash benefit for building the subway stop under their property on Constellation Boulevard. Pray tell how that is in the “regional interest” of Los Angeles County residents and taxpayers? Standing up to large money interests and ensuring transparency on a multi-billion dollar project should always be in the “regional interest.” We have put the regional interest first by standing up to an out-of-control bureaucratic entity which has wasted precious transportation dollars that should have been used for the benefit of the residents of Los Angeles County but instead has lined the pockets of contractors, consultants, engineers, project managers, developers, and campaign contributors. Those that claim our fight with MTA is not in the “regional interest” clearly do not understand what a regional interest is. The Science: We heard repeatedly from those who support tunnels under Beverly Hills High School that they would let the science determine which route to choose. We implored the MTA Board to delay that decision and wait for the science. We asked that the California Geological Survey (CGS), the final authority on the issue of faults, complete its work before the MTA Board voted, but the board refused to wait. Now we have the definitive answer from CGS which clears Beverly High and East Santa Monica Boulevard of any active faults. Please see a copy of the full CGS findings at: CGS LETTER In addition, the city of Los Angeles determined before the CGS that there were no active faults when Los Angeles approved a 39+ tower on the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and Moreno in the exact spot MTA’s now discredited “science” said an active fault existed. According to Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, this necessitated the move from Santa Monica Boulevard to Constellation. In fact, based on the public comments of L.A. Mayor Villaragosa, Yaroslavsky, L.A. City Councilmember Koretz, and former Assemblyman Mike Feuer, they had already determined that the Constellation stop was their preferred route even before the final EIR was complete. Yaroslavsky went on to further state that if BHUSD does not like it: “sue us.” Legal fees: Two independent law firms concluded that the board can use Measure E funds to stop the tunnels under the high school. MTA's tunnels would impact our ability to develop the high school and district office sites. This proposed tunneling would require the district to spend additional Measure E funds to comply with the safety requirements of the Field Act and the Division of State Architect (DSA) whose OK is required for all public school K-12 construction. Preliminary figures show up to 30 percent higher costs to build and develop these sites. By not fighting MTA, we would have taken millions of dollars earmarked for classroom improvements and instead spent those dollars to reinforce foundations to straddle tunnels running through the heart of our campus. Much of the seismic, soil, electrical, mechanical, and geological studies that have been conducted to avoid tunneling under the high school are required by the DSA before construction could begin anyway. So to be clear, these reports were necessary to comply with state requirements to build at school sites regardless of the MTA. In order to provide the community with the best possible oversight of the Bond Program, we have a Citizens Oversight Committee, and their minutes and audits of the Measure E Funds are available on our website and have been presented, debated, and approved at several public board meetings. Why are you threatening me and the United States? Is it because we seem to be sympathetic to South Korea? I would understand that, but that does not mean we are hostile against you. I see news stories which show you mobilized, with enormous phalanxes, and displaying vicious looking missiles, which, I am told, can reach me and Southern California. And I really don’t understand it. My guess is that the people of North and South Korea are pretty much of the same racial extraction, and just because someone drew a line across your middle, you want to kill one another? Well, although I decry it, what does it have to do with me? Human society has, for too long, suffered from the fact that some leaders have drawn a line and created a border with another state and want to kill one another. Why? Except for the tint of our skin, the shape of our eyes, and the difference in our language, whatever happened to: “Are we not all brothers, hath not one God created us?” I am advanced in age, and do not expect to be alive when opposing nations break out in warfare, but the awareness of it haunts my troubled dreams. In 1955, Jill Jackson Miller and Sy Miller wrote: “Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me Let there be peace on earth, the peace that was meant to be With God as our father, brothers brother all are we Let me walk with my in perfect harmony.”

We as a country suffered another horrific blow with the bombings in Boston. On a beautiful and sunny day, with a show of force of police and security officials, a terrorist plot again slipped through the cracks, and rocked our world. Now in the aftermath of this heartbreaking attack, is the MTA and the Department of Transportation taking note of public safety beyond fault lines? Instead of Beverly Hills approaching these two organizations with our genuine concerns about the route of the proposed subway, perhaps we should be approaching the Department of Homeland Security. It is clear to all of us with any common sense, that loss of life is the main goal of any terrorist plot. Would a train carrying a bomb, timed to go off while going under our high school, not a plausible threat? Many thought the video of BHHS getting blown up, overly dramatic. Well think again, and watch the videos from the marathon. Los Angeles has dodged these attacks so far, but are we on the roster? Did we learn from New York, the underground in London, and now Boston? With all of our intelligence agencies working to keep up safe, they still don't know who will be next. Yes, next! Red Richmond ****** Having been at the City Council meeting about Metro, I have to respectfully disagree with Councilmember Willie Brien’s assertions that the promise of the Expo line had anything to do with the resurgence of Culver City. That started over a decade ago because art galleries were priced out of Venice and Santa Monica and moved to cheap storefronts there. Restaurateurs like Benjamin Ford (who closed Chadwick on SoBev to open Ford's Filling Station) and clubs like the Jazz Bakery followed. I also don't believe the lots in Beverly Hills Metro is using for its Purple Line stops are large enough for the mixed use developments which Dr. Brien envisions if they are to be kept to sizes allowed by the General Plan. As far affordable housing, the development at Wilshire/Vermont charges $1,700 per month for a single apartment. With all due respect, I don’t consider that “affordable” and hesitate to think what that single would go for at Wilshire and La Cienega. Tom Pease ****** Unbelievably, on one of the most important post office days of the year—”Tax Day”—this past Monday (April 15), the Beverly Hills Post Office facility on Crescent Drive which ordinarily opens at 9 a.m. was late or closed that morning. Along with a large group of angry Beverly Hills residents, I waited to drop off my tax returns until 9:15 a.m. then had leave to head into the office without dropping off my returns. One lady who looked an awful lot like Joan Rivers remarked: “If I could move my face, you would see just how upset I am!” John McQuilkin ****** Never mind the bollards! The City should re-think its position on closing Crescent Drive for special events. As a businessman and local patron, I urge our council members to consider the numbers: street closures have caused a 30-50 percent loss of revenue in some cases and that’s unacceptable for such a vibrant community. Small businesses are struggling to compete in this economy as it is. We don’t need to compound the problem by cutting off their access to customers during critical shopping periods throughout the year, especially the holiday season. Business owners have the right to be consulted when a proposed City ordinance threatens their livelihoods. In this case, installing bollards is an unnecessary action.
