The annual Beverly Hills Father’s Day favorite returns on Sunday, June 18 as the 24th annual Rodeo Drive Concours celebrates the “Road To Rodeo.” The Rodeo Drive Concours d’Elegance annually brings around 30,000 visitors to Rodeo Drive, and a big crowd is

The fact that the longtime Bel-Air resident passed on Mother’s Day is only appropriate inasmuch as she and her late husband of 44 years, John E. Anderson, spent their lifetimes giving of themselves and their largesse.

Marion, in particular, has been heavily involved with Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, co-chairing both its board of trustees and board of regents for many years. She has been a CHLA trustee since

By Victoria Talbot The Beverly Hills City Council voted 3-2 on Tuesday (Mayor Lili Bosse and Councilmember John Mirisch against) to go forward with a plan for “maintenance” of Parcels 12 & 13 that will include grinding of the stumps of 195 trees illegally cut down on Nov. 21-22, 2015.

In that vote, new Councilmember Robert Wunderlich voted to remove the stumps. “I did not want to pose an impediment that would delay the Santa Monica Boulevard reconstruction,” he said.

But Thursday morning, in a surprise move that residents are embracing, Wunderlich sent the following e-mail to City Manager Mahdi Aluzri and Bosse on his way out of the country: “New information has been presented to me regarding the stumps. Given that and the

Beverly Hills Schools Welcome New PTA Leaders At Montage Beverly Hills

By Laura Coleman Ask any principal about the secret to a successful school and chances are he or she will tell you it’s the PTA. Indeed, Beverly Hills Unified Superintendent Michael Bregy underscored how the PTAs are foundational to the success of the school district to kick-off Wednesday’s annual PTA installation program at the Montage Beverly Hills.

“My favorite event of the year is always the PTA installation lunch,” extolled Mayor Lili Bosse. “There is nothing more energizing and exciting than being surrounded by these truly dynamic visionaries who are the foundation of what makes our schools soar to amazing heights.”

At Wednesday’s very special luncheon, parent leaders, school principals, administrators and City officials joined together to witness the swearing in of a new crop of PTA leaders.

Longtime PTA leader Jennifer Terrell received this year’s Capta Golden Oak Service Award.

“This woman is a force of nature, a dynamo. This woman knows what is needed and how to get it done,” said Susie Roberts.

All of the parent leaders who volunteer their time – many indeed spend considerable portions of their day work-

ing to help strengthen the schools – are intrinsic to the ability of Beverly Hills students to be successful.

"We are excited about working with our newly installed presidents and executive board and look forward to having an amazing year together,” said PTA Council co-president Rose Kaiserman, who was sworn in for her third term Wednesday.

Man’s Leg Severed In Beverly Hills Road Rage Incident; Long Beach Woman Charged

By Matt Lopez A Long Beach woman is facing charges of attempted murder after a road rage attack that severed a man’s leg in the parking lot of Pavilions at the Olympic Boulevard/Beverly Drive intersection.

Jamika Marie Abair, 22, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to one felony count each of attempted murder, aggravated mayhem and assault with a deadly weapon.

Abair and an alleged passenger, 19-year-old Sarah Gabriella Huerta, are alleged to have gotten into a road rage run-in with a man in the 9400 block of Olympic Boulevard last Friday.

In the shocking altercation, which was caught on video,

Abair is accused of driving her vehicle toward the man, pinning him against a railing and severeing his leg below the knee.

Huerta is charged with one felony count of accessory after the fact with knowledge of the crime and also pleaded not guilty.

By Laura Coleman When it comes to saving a life, there are few high school students who are as impactful as Beverly Hills High School senior Rebecca Meshkani. For the past two years, she has worked to bring mental health issues out of the shadows through the formation of her on-campus club, Embrace Your Beauty Mark.

In recognition of her work, the Westwood-based Matthew Silverman Memorial

Foundation has named Rebecca this year’s “Teen Hero.” She will receive the award on Monday at the 5th Annual Matt’s Foundation Golf Classic at the El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana.

“She really cares.

By Victoria Talbot The City of Beverly Hills Community Service Department is calling all bakers to prepare their entries for the annual Pie Bake A’la Beverly Hills and children’s “Piesta,” coming June 11, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Beverly Hills Farmers’ Market.

Mundell will retire on June 23 and will be honored next month at the 25th anniversary of the Beverly Hills firefighters Backdraft Ball at The Beverly Hilton.

Mundell began as an entrylevel firefighter in 1986, working his way through the ranks and rising to various leadership positions including Fire Inspector, Fire Engineer, Fire Captain, Fire Marshal, Safety and Training Officer, Shift Batallion Chief, Deputy Fire Chief before eventually replacing Tim Scranton as Fire Chief in 2013.

An active participant in numerous community events and organizations, Mundell has lent his time to the Rotary Club,

GOLDSMITH GETS HIS STAR—Oscar-winning film composer Jerry Goldsmith was posthumously awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame earlier this month.

Goldsmith, who died in 2004, was nominated for six Grammy Awards, five Primetime Emmy Awards, nine Golden Globe Awards, four British Academy Film Awards, and 18 Academy Awards. He won the Oscar for his score for The Omen. Among his other noteworthy scores are: The Sand Pebbles, Logan’s Run, Patton, Papillon, Chinatown, The Wind And The Lion, The Boys from Brazil, Alien, Poltergeist, Gremlins, Hoosiers, Total Recall, three Rambo films, Explorers and four other Star Trek films. “We are delighted to celebrate the award’s 23rd anniversary,” says Rona Sebastian, president of the Herb Alpert Foundation. “Each year the award recognizes five visionary mid-career artists who expand their fields as well as our horizons. She is the recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship in Choreography and multiple Bessie Awards.

• Film/Video— L.A.-based film- luciana achugar maker and artist Kerry Tribe explores complex subjects through time-based media (multi-channel videos, 16mm films, installations) as well as sculpture, performance and photography.

Her work has been shown at MOMA, Tate Mod- Kerry Tribe ern, Centre Pompidou, in the Whitney Biennial, and at the Hammer Museum. Her upcoming New Works exhibition opens at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art this fall.

• Music—Eve Beglarian’s latest work, Lighten Up, an evening-length multi-media event made with people who have been struck in mid-life by visions, premieres in spring 2018.

• Visual Arts— Interdisciplinary artist Amy Franceschini describes her work as “situationDaniel Fish specific engagements that challenge one’s assumptions about the world both real and imagined.”

Often working in collaboration, she employs radio, performance, workshops, Amy Franceschini events, and sculpture, proposing alternatives to conventional thinking about science, technology and ecology.

“It’s particularly meaningful at this divisive moment to honor and support this year’s winners who are rigorous in their reach, alert to the world and make community as much as they make art,“ says Irene Borger, director of the “Herb Alpert Award in the Arts,” who selects the 15 distinguished panelists who assay the award’s candidates.

“Each year some of the most challenging art makers, and visionary, feet-inthe-trenches curators, critics, and presenters sit down to examine work, approaching the judging process with adventurousness, generosity, and well-honed discernment,” Borger said.

Meryl and Russel Kern, Dr. Robert Figlin and Shelley and Jan Rosen were honored for their ongoing commitment to raising awareness about cancer, and their dedication to ending the disease at the Tower Cancer Research Foundation’s (TCRF) Tower of Hope gala earlier this month at The Beverly Hilton.

More than 700 attended the event which raised nearly $1.2 million to support Tower’s cancer research and patient support efforts.

The evening saw $800,000 in research grants awarded, including a $500,000 Senior Investigator Grant to explore a new immunotherapy-based therapeutic model for lung cancer.

Career Development Grants were also awarded to support young investigators exploring research that attempts to better understand how each cancer tumor is different, so that in the future, oncologists will be able to pick the right drugs for each unique patient and tumor, and how to make immunotherapy more relevant for sarcoma patients.

Tower’s seed money re-

search investment strategy has been so successful that it has led to $35 million in additional funding from other foundations and cancer centers for these investigators. This initial funding allows these young, aspiring scientists to move forward with their clinical research, often allowing them to develop their hypotheses and create a foundation from which to pursue further research funding.

Tower’s patient support division, Magnolia House, is an integrative survivorship wellness center offering programs and workshops, that address end-stage disease challenges, classes for cancer caregivers, cooking classes to develop a nutritional approach to cancer survival, and individually tailored experiences such as a one-on-one fitness training with a cancer-trained therapist.

Also at the dinner, Nancy Mishkin, TCRF board chair introduced Tower Incoming Board Chair Donna Rosen, who will assume the post next year.

Emcee for the evening was Rabbi Edward Feinstein, senior rabbi of Valley Beth Shalom in Encino.

By Joan Mangum The Associates For Breast and Prostate Cancer Studies (the ABCs), hosted its starstudded Mother’s Day Luncheon at the Four Seasons on Doheny Drive benefiting breast and prostate cancer research at the John Wayne Cancer Institute at Providence Saint John’s Health Center. The afternoon honored actress Sharon Stone with the “Mother of the Year Award” and Chaz Dean, creator of WEN Hair & Body Care, with the “Humanitarian Award.”

Actress Kym Whitley was the emcee of the event which Beverly Cohen and Sheri Rosenblum co-chaired. Before the luncheon, there was a luxury boutique featuring a fashionable array of select vendors donating a portion of proceeds from their sales to the organization.

“Every year, Gloria Gebbia and the ABCs create an amazing luncheon that raises much needed funds to support our breast and prostate research,” said Patrick Wayne, JWCI chairman.

Sharon Stone received her honor from her three sons, Roan Bronstein, Laird and

Quinn Stone. She has served as the amfAR Global Fundraising chairperson for more than 20 years, raising millions to find a cure for AIDS. His long-time client Lisa Rinna presented the “Humanitarian Award” to celebrity stylist Chaz Dean, who has launched some 500 products in multiple categories including hair care, body care and fragrance. He has appeared on The Doctors and Life Changers, and supports Stand Up To Cancer, Habitat for Humanity, APLA, Best Friends Animal Society, and a host of others.

The ABCs was formed 27 years ago by a group of dedicated philanthropists who had originally been associated with the Eddie Cantor Charitable Foundation, an organization that supported a variety of causes. These individuals wanted to devote all their charitable efforts and resources to eradicating cancer and unanimously chose to support progressive and innovative breast cancer and prostate cancer research at the John Wayne Cancer Institute.

By Laura Coleman The Hammer Museum will host its eighth annual K.A.M.P. (Kids’ Art Museum Project) on Sunday with a day jam-packed with engaging art projects and delectable food.

The brainchild of former Beverly Hills Fine Arts Commissioner Brooke Kanter, this unique fundraising event gives 20 artists license to create imaginative projects for kids and their families throughout the museum.

“One of the important things for me has been to teach my children that creative thinking is so much a part of everything that’s going on today,” explained Kanter, who is once again chairing the event.

“Learning to think differently is an important thing for all of our futures. This is the next generation of everything... not just of artists, but of philanthropy. Children learn to give back because we teach them to give back.”

At Sunday’s event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., painters, sculptors, architects, and other creative individuals will lead inventive hands-on workshops in the Hammer Museum courtyard. There will also be a

K.A.M.P. Reading Room where celebrities such as Will Arnett, Jack Black, Elizabeth Chambers, Armie Hammer and Michelle Monaghan will read their favorite children’s books aloud.

“This is our eighth annual K.A.M.P. and the event feels new and fresh every year, thanks to the generosity of the artists, sponsors, and celebrities who donate their time and energy,” said Veridiana Pontes, director of development for the Hammer Museum.

BROOKLYN IN BEVERLY HILLS — Avant-garde string quartet Brooklyn Rider offered a riveting performance Saturday evening for guests lucky enough to be in attendance at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills. A dark, yet concise program well suited to their talents and collective penchant for stylizing the classic string quartet to a more contemporary dimension, which began with Philip Glass and ended with Ludwig Van Beethoven, also included an original, and very experimental, composition by group member violinist Colin Jacobsen as well as Leos Janacek’s moving Kreutzer Sonata. Now in its 10th year, the Brooklyn-based quartet has received consistent praise for its eclectic repertoire. “I think where we try to live is a feeling of blends while maintaining a strong dose of individuality within that. It’s also walking that line of doing a lot of detailed work and just trying to find that way to make the music spontaneous too. And actually being surprised by each other on stage is something we value as a quartet,” said Brooklyn Rider Violist Nicholas Cords. In a letter to retailers signed by Bosse she wrote, “Because of these ‘early’ closures, Beverly Hills has long been perceived as the place where there is nothing to do in the evening. We have begun to change. . . with the multitude of dining establishments on Canon Drive. . .

We need to add shopping and entertainment. . . “ When the letter went out, it said that there was already support for the BOLD initiative from several stores, including Burberry, Chanel, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Patek Philippe, Rolex, Tom Ford and Valentino.

The proposal for a program will have several facets costing $800,000.

Funding, which was approved Tuesday afternoon, will include $375,000 from the FY 16/17 Tourism & Marketing budget and $150,000 from the Business Development budget as carryovers, $200,000 reallocated from the Conference and Visitors Bureau FY 16/17 budget and $75,000 from the Rodeo Drive Committee.

Expenses include $210,000 for a “celebrity” DJ; $200,000 for “branded food and drink carts,” $90,000 for Stamp Pavement Art that can be used for selfies with personal media devices, and $110,000 for advertising, promotions for deals on Lyft, a restaurant concierge to arrange reservations, and celebrity Style Sessions with “Digital Influencers,” that often have thousands of followers.

The evening will feature music throughout the triangle, including South Santa Monica Blvd, which has suffered because of the reconstruction work.

Rodeo Drive will have ice cream tables and chairs where guests can relax and enjoy small-bite treats, non-alcoholic beverages and coffees under twinkling strands of lights.

BHC: What strategy are you using to connect to the younger generation?

Grundwerg: I always say, there’s no one size fits all approach. Israel has so much to offer in so many areas, whether it’s art, culture, technology, medical innovation, so depending on who we’re trying to reach out, we try to identify where there’s need in the community to bring Israeli expertise and knowledge to address a real need. It’s the same thing for young people. The idea is to bring the different aspects of true Israel in a way that people can relate to and connect to.

Several business leaders were present to provide support for the initiative, including Beverly Hilton General Manager Sandy Murphy, Managing Director of the Peninsula Offer Nissenbaum, CBRE Director Two Rodeo Bill Wiley, former City Treasurer Eliot Finkel and Geary’s CEO Tom Blumenthal, with a letter read by Mark Tronstein, outgoing director of the Rodeo Drive Committee.

“If the merchants don’t make changes, we’ll be losing to the nearby businesses,” wrote Blumenthal.

Added Murphy: “We have struggled to keep guests in the City during the evening hours.”

Nissenbaum concurred, “It is absolutely necessary. . . a shift in the culture is very much needed. Our guests, especially international, leave in the evenings. . . They now have a reason to stay.”

The council voted 4-1 in favor, with Councilmember John Mirisch opposing.

Mirisch said he believes the stores should stay open later without spending money on programs. “Spending $200,000 on a DJ or paying people to tweet . . . I don’t think this plan is worth $800,000.” He proposed expanding the Concerts on Canon, a popular summer music program every Thursday evening at the Beverly Canon Gardens.

“We can’t just sit on our laurels anymore,” said Bosse. “If we don’t have a vibrant business community we won’t have a vibrant community. We can’t put our heads in the sand anymore. My goal is that the culture will change.”

“It’s a great reminder to care about yourself, to love yourself and to remind your peers to care about themselves,” said Rebecca, who is headed to Santa Monica College in the fall. “School is stressful and having a place where you can de-stress with other students is really beneficial.”

Lakers Secure Second Pick In NBA Draft, Likely Will Select Lonzo Ball

By Matt Lopez Lakers fans worldwide breathed a sigh of relief Tuesday evening when the ping-pong balls went their way once again at the NBA Draft Lottery, and the Lakers received the second pick in next month’s NBA draft.

The NBA Draft Lottery works much like a state lottery – the 14 teams with the worst record during the season are all assigned odds at getting the top pick, with the team with the worst record having the best odds.

Ping-pong balls for each team are assigned based on those odds, and then drawn.

The Lakers finished with the third worst record in the league, and drew the second pick in the draft. The Boston Celtics will pick first. Based on a previous trade, the Lakers would have lost the pick if it had fallen outside the top three.

Washington guard Markelle Fultz is believed to be the Celtics’ target with the top pick, and it is widely-believed that the Lakers will select UCLA star Lonzo Ball with the second pick.

Ball, something of a hometown hero, starred at Chino Hills High before playing one season at UCLA. He’s been at the center of controversy recently –

that City staff, who are largely responsible for the cutting of the trees, especially Aluzri, and the developers, Lyn Konheim, Bob Barth and Stanley Black of the BHLC, are using this opportunity to remove evidence that they might have worked together to cut down the trees, and are doing so again with the stumps.

“Why,” asked resident Marilyn Gallup, “did the majority [of the City Council members] continue to act in the interest of the BHLC, and against the wishes of the residents?”

Following the 2015 incident, Public Information Manager Therese Kosterman wrote: “The Community Development Department issued a right-of-way permit for a lane closure this past weekend for the work on lots 12 and 13... No permit was needed for cutting the trees; we have no control over them as they are on private property. Our understanding is that the owner contacted the DTSC [Department of Toxic Substances Control] on his own to learn the correct procedure for removal of the trees.”

In fact, no permit was ever issued to close the street; 195 of the 196 trees cut down were, either wholly or partially, on City-owned land. None of the workers were “authorized to be in a hazardous waste site,” said Sayareh Amir, Branch Chief in Clean Up Operations at the DTSC, which has authority over the property that is heavily contaminated with arsenic.

Now, it appears that the City is working again with Konheim, Black and Barth – and to complete the third segment of the Santa Monica Boulevard reconstruction project – no matter what toll it takes on the relationship between the City administration and its residents, who have lost faith in the City staff.

An e-mail sent on May 12 to Konheim and his attorney Bob Howard shows that Aluzri, Deputy Building Official David Yelton, Assistant City Manager George Chavez, Director of Community Development Susan Healy Keene and Wiener were among those informed of a plan to push the stump removal through City Council.

The e-mail reads: “This serves to confirm our telephone conference call today. Due to concerns raised by neighboring community members. . . stump removal will be placed on next week’s City Council Study Session agenda. . .

“Accordingly, Beverly Hills Land Company is directed not to initiate any scheduled stump removal work on Parcels 12 and 13, which BHLC voluntarily agreed to comply pending further notice by the City. Accordingly, the scope of work. . . will be part of the public process, and staff expects to

receive direction from the Council at the May 16 meeting.”

This communication, like those found in Lightner’s emails – obtained by a California Public Records Act demand – prior to the trees being cut, reflects a feeling among many community members who believe the City has an attitude that some residents “get in the way” of City business.

Lightner was dismissed in 2016 following the incident with a large, undisclosed payout at taxpayer expense. He did not speak to private investigator Joanne Parrent, hired by the City to investigate the incident. His testimony would have been key to resolving the issue.

At 5:21 p.m. Tuesday, during the City Council Study Session, Yelton sent Konheim and Howard confirmation that they could go forward: “The public process has concluded regarding confirmation of next steps... including removal of the stumps on Parcels 12 and 13... Beverly Hills Land Company should initiate stump removal... as planned.” he wrote.

“Thank you for your understanding and patience regarding this interruption by placing your schedule on hold to remove the stumps... ” Yelton minimized the opposition to the removal of the tree stumps to City Council members, which has caused a firestorm of new controversy.

“The Council majority’s direction to staff to remove 100% of all tree stumps relied on an unsupported conclusion that not doing so would somehow impede or delay the completion of Santa Monica Boulevard...” said Thomas White, president of the Municipal League of Beverly Hills.

Plans call for only bushes to replace the trees the City has long promised.

E-mails indicate that Yelton, Konheim and senior City Staff were cohesive on this matter, and that Konheim delayed removing the stumps until there was approval from City Council.

When the trees were cut down in 2015, Lightner, former Director of Community Services Steve Zoet and Aluzri complained in e-mails – obtained in a Public Records Act – that Konheim repeatedly called them about cutting the trees.

One of Yelton’s most persuasive arguments was the alleged photographs and “map” of the 195 tree stumps, which he could not produce before the Courier’s deadline.

Yelton told attendees of a meeting on May 4 that this detailed “map” of the stumps was enough “evidence” of their placement and existence in the event of a lawsuit. Kosterman repeated that claim to the Courier, though she could

not produce the map either.

Wunderlich likened the removal of the stumps to the removal of evidence after a crime scene has been photographed and documented.

Wiener advised: “At the public meeting, staff had direction to remove 195 stumps. Subsequent to that meeting, one council member indicated that based on the receipt of additional information, he wished to change his position... the Brown Act requires that all decisions of the City Council be made in public.”

The item will be rescheduled for a future meeting.

Vice Mayor Julian Gold voted to remove the stumps citing the alleged “documentation” as necessary evidence and the need to complete the reconstruction of Santa Monica Boulevard. Gold was mayor when the trees were cut, and ordered the infamous “Carol Lynch Report,” which blamed the brouhaha on the staff handling of the media.

New Councilmember Lester Friedman also voted to remove the stumps, based on the alleged documentation and Santa Monica Boulevard completion.

Friedman did not believe the City staff was misleading councilmembers in regards to documentation and attempted to arrange to allow the Courier to review the documents at City Hall yesterday.

As of press time, the City failed to provide an opportunity to review the documents.

As the final councilmember to ask questions, Bosse asked what the alternative would be to using forms to create a curb and gutter that requires the removal of the trees.

There is a manual process that can take a week longer but would not require the removal of the stumps. It would not have required the removal of the trees, either.

"That would be my recommendation,” said Bosse.

Tuesday’s agenda item consisted of only a single page, notwithstanding the fact that there were two new members of the City Council who don’t have the depth of insight on the matter that their incumbent colleagues possess.

The agenda item, “Confirmation of Next Steps Regarding Parcels 12 & 13,” says that staff is “In the process of enforcement of property maintenance” and “conducted a community meeting on May 4 to keep residents informed. . . regarding next steps.”

The “Discussion” portion of the agenda reads: “As part of property maintenance and enforcement actions, and in conjunction with reconstruction of Santa Monica [Boulevard], a number of activ-

ities must be carried out. . . to prepare for construction activity along Santa Monica Blvd. Specifically. . . the remaining stumps must be removed in order to accommodate the relocated fencing to allow for reconstruction of the curb, gutter, and related infrastructure…”

The staff report includes no mention of the history of the events. Only with context could these new councilmembers make informed decisions that could have unintended consequences such as the proposed development that was mentioned in the original 2015 DTSC report.

That report stated, “The Beverly Hills Land Company is in the ‘conceptual planning stage for development,’” of the site. “The planning for Lot 12 is combined office, commercial, and residential multistory structure with parking,” including 26,600 square feet of office space, 16,000 square feet of commercial space and 15,800 square feet of residential space with 33,300 square feet of semi-subterranean parking.

Planning for Lot 13 is being considered for townhouses and parking.”

The removal will clear the land for the next steps towards mitigation and ultimately, development for the BHLC. The gain of three votes Tuesday (though subsequently rescinded) could be construed to embolden BHLC towards the ultimate goal of developing the properties.

Three votes will be necessary on a future City Council to change current transportation zoning to develop it.

If the City leases the property for staging construction, the City will be using taxpayer dollars for property that has cost the City hundreds of thousands of dollars in wasted funds on reports, legal fees and town hall meetings that have done nothing to solve or ameliorate the conflict that it has created between the City Staff and the residents who employ them.

It is unclear what the City gets in return. There does not appear to be any evidence that BHLC will sell the City the properties.

In fact, the deal appears so much in favor of BHLC that it supports residents’ claims that the City’s true interest in removing the stumps is to remove evidence of Staff’s involvement, including Aluzri.

Said Bosse: “We must learn from our mistakes and regain the trust of the community on this issue. Every aspect of this process must be clearly explained to the residents to allow for their input. We must not only listen but we must hear them. Going forward, we need to make each step a partnership with the community for full transparency and inclusion.”

Publisher’s Note: Bel-Air Homeowners Alliance President/CEO Fred Rosen fired off the following letter to Mohamed Hadid’s attorney Robert Shapiro last week, in response to the latest developments in the 901 Strada Vecchia criminal trial, covered on page 1 of last week’s Courier.

I read with interest the quote you made in court that "This is not a matter of great public interest". I respectfully beg to differ with you.

This matter has risen to both community, citywide, national and international significance with stories from the Beverly Hills Courier, New York Times, Nightline, Los Angeles Times, along with The Daily Mail in London.

I believe in our judicial system and that all defendants are entitled to receive the best representation they can get and clearly, that's the case here.

That said, let me be abundantly clear about a few facts –

Growing up in New Jersey, the only child of Armenian immigrants who’d lost the bulk of their family in the Armenian Genocide, Florence learned early on the importance and power of communication. After majoring in journalism and English at New Jersey State University, she moved to Manhattan, where she worked first as an editor for Maj. Alexander De Seversky, author of Victory Through Air Power, before later working as a PR director for Caribbean Airways owner O. Roy Chalk.

In 1969 Florence moved to California for her mother’s health, taking up residence on Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica, where she still lives today.

“It was beautful,” she recalled. “You could park anywhere. There were more flowers everywhere. There were roses everywhere.”

In Los Angeles she initially started doing publicity for Max Factor in Hollywood before landing a job with Dr. Hammer in 1979 when her personnel agency asked her to interview there.

Hammer interviewed her himself, and once he learned

this isn't only about the few neighbors who are directly impacted and had their property values significantly reduced.

It’s about the entire community who are upset and offended by your client's cavalier disrespect for the rules. He does not seem to comprehend that the city has laws and regulations that also apply to him.

Attempting to hide more than 9000' of illegal home construction is more than a slight error – it’s both willful and intentional – he clearly assumed he could ask for forgiveness, which our organization is firmly against him receiving. For the record,

I wanted you to be aware of these facts and that it is my intention to send this communication to our entire community.

I am reminded of another very high profile case that you participated in. There was a defining line, which I intend to paraphrase here: "You must admit – the house doesn't fit!"

Memorial services will be held Wednesday (May 24) at 2 p.m. at Westwood United Methodist Church.

“I’m sort of an adopted member of the Hammer family,” Florence said. In fact, the family is taking her out tomorrow evening at Mr. Chow’s in Beverly Hills – her choice – to celebrate her centennial birthday.

Her second family, however, is Stop Cancer, where she continues to work five days a week full time as its development officer.

After Hammer co-founded Stop Cancer in 1988 – in response to learning that just one quarter of research grants were honored for lack of funding by National Cancer Institute – Florence started working for the organization full time. Since its inception, Stop Cancer has raised over $70 million to support cancer research. And Florence is already hard at work preparing for the 2018 gala fundraiser,

which will honor Toms Shoes founder Blake Mycoskie and his wife, Heather, with the “Dr. Armand Hammer Philanthropy Award.”

“From a philanthropic point of view, anyone would want to do whatever they can to help rid the world of cancer,” she said. “There are millions of cancer survivors who are alive who would not have been alive 10 to 15 years ago.”

In fact, several cancer survivors were among the scores of devotees in attendance on Wednesday at the Bel Air Bar and Grill to honor Florence with a special birthday lunch.

Although, she still can’t quite believe she’s already turning 100.

“I haven’t really thought about each decade until recently ... I’ve always been too busy to think about the past,” she said.

Florence has no plans to slow down, or stop working and driving a car for that matter. And she knows at least one key (in addition to winning the genetic lottery) is to keep smiling.

She noted how Jeanne Louise Calment, the oldest documented human, who lived until 122, had the advice to always have a smile.

“When I was a little girl in school, they called me smiles,” Florence said. ”Evidently I was always smiling.”
