The Planning Commission of the City of Beverly Hills, at its REGULAR meeting on Thursday, June 26, 2014, will hold a public hearing beginning at 1:30 PM, or as soon thereafter as the matter may be heard to consider requests for the following entitlements: Zone Text Amendment. A request to amend the Beverly Hills Municipal Code (BHMC) regarding development standards for floor area on singlefamily properties located in the Hillside Area of the City. Currently, the Municipal Code requires that any existing unimproved and uninhabitable space that is converted to habitable space, and does not otherwise meet the definition of a basement, be calculated as floor area. If approved, the proposed Zone Text Amendment would allow for existing unimproved and uninhabitable space to be converted to habitable space and remain exempt from floor area even if the space does not meet the definition of a basement. As proposed, this amendment would modify the floor area development standards only for properties within the Hillside Area of the City that range from 15,001 to 25,000 square feet area, and were constructed prior to 1997. This particular amendment is being requested in conjunction with a remodel and addition at the property located at 1127 Miradero Road; however, the amendment would apply to all Hillside properties with a lot area between 15,001 and 25,000 square feet and constructed prior to 1997.

Variance. In-lieu of the Zone Text Amendment, the applicant requests a Variance to allow the existing unimproved and uninhabitable space located within the first story of the existing single-family residence to be improved.

Since the maximum floor area permitted by the BHMC has already been developed on the project site, the Variance would allow a floor area addition of approximately 1,722 square feet, which would cause the floor area on the site to exceed the maximum floor area permitted by Code.

The proposed Zone Text Amendment has been assessed in accordance with the authority and criteria contained in the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), the State CEQA Guidelines, and the environmental regulations of the City, and have been determined to be exempt from CEQA pursuant to Article 5, Section 15061 (b)(3) of the Guidelines, which states that CEQA applies only to projects which have the potential for causing a significant effect on the environment. Since the proposed Zone Text Amendment would only apply to spaces contained within the footprint of the existing residence, no potential for causing a significant effect on the environment exists, and therefore, the project is exempt from CEQA. In addition, the proposed Variance has been assessed in accordance with the authority and criteria contained in the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), the State CEQA Guidelines, and the environmental regulations of the City. The project qualifies for a Class 1 Categorical Exemption for additions to existing structures that do not result in an increase of more than 2,500 square feet of floor area. Therefore the project has been determined not to have a significant environmental impact and is exempt from the provisions of CEQA. Any interested person may attend the meeting and be heard or present written comments to the Commission.

Karen Christiansen’s Court Appeal Moves Forward In The Absence Of Mediation

Beverly Hills Board Of Education Meeting Round-Up Accelerated Learning: In the wake of the Board’s decision earlier this month to eliminate 6th grade honors level math, at last night’s meeting the Board was prepared to discuss efforts to support education opportunities for high-achieving pupils who have been identified as gifted and talented. Because GATE funding is now a component of the Local Control Funding Formula, districts must allocate funds on a local level to offer GATE programming.

Dean of College Admissions: The Board was poised to approve the hire of Ah Yong Chi to the position of Dean of College Admission. Board VP Brian Goldberg, who was part of the team that interviewed applicants for the position said that the hire would make a tremendous impact in the lives of Beverly Hills students. “She is very attuned to the college admissions process and our district will score a huge victory in retaining her services,” Superintendent Gary Woods said.

Athletic Director On Thursday, the Board of Education considered authorizing staff to hire an Athletic Director full-time. Hereto, the position had been shared by recently retired Jason Newman and Vonzie Paysinger. Making the position a full time assignment will represent an increased cost of approximately $45,000, including benefits. “More than half of our student body is involved in athletics and we want to do a better job in the way we administer our athletic department,” Superintendent Gary Woods said.

Budget Director: The Board was preparing Thursday to direct staff to initiate a search for a Director of Budget in anticipation of Mary Anne McCabe ending her two-year contract with the district in September.

“We want to open it up and let folks know we're looking,” Superintendent Gary Woods told The Courier. “I think it’s a mutual thing.” Woods said that the fear was: “McCabe could retire any time she wanted and we’d be left in the cold.”

Los Angeles Doctors Symphony Teams With The Harmony Project For Free Plummer Park Concert

By Laura Coleman The Los Angeles Doctors Symphony Orchestra is bringing the joy of music to Plummer Park tomorrow for a free concert featuring “Classics With a Twist.”

Featuring the artistry of Mariano Dugatkin on the bandoneón as well as students of the Harmony Project, which promotes music education for youth in low-income commu-

nities.

“It’s a great opportunity for students to see what it means to be a professional musician or an amateur musician,” said Harmony Program Director Sarah Wass.

Around 15 high school students have been performing side-by-side with the orchestra for the past four rehearsals on instruments including the flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone,

violin, viola, cello and bass.

The performance will feature music from Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story, Aaron Copland’s Prairie Night Celebration Dance and Maurice Ravel’s Bolero, among others.

Dwell On Design Comes To L.A. Convention Center June 20-22

lifelong philanthropist, Marella enboldened the arts communities of her beloved country. As has our swannecked Felisa, the elegant stylesetter spouse of theatrical entrepreneur Nick Vanoff. Her devotion and support for the worlds of theater, music, dance, museums, medicine and education enhanced our Golden State.

ome years ago, Nick and Felisa joined Patti and Tommy Skouras’ weekend on the Ionian island of Corfu for a family wedding. Where the partying, ideally planned by Patti, was nonstop during the

hottest week ever in Greece.

Nick and Felisa hosted al fresco taverna luncheons on the verdant island that had served as the summer royal residence when the monarchy was in power.

UCLA honored Beverly Hills resident David Geffen last month for his advocacy for the arts, health care and human rights and for his longstanding record of generosity to the university, especially for what he

has singlehandedly done for medical education.

Creator of the Asylum and Geffen record labels and cofounder of DreamWorks SKG, Geffen received UCLA’s highest honor, the UCLA Medal, from

Chancellor Gene Block during the David Geffen School of Medicine’s Hippocratic Oath ceremony, presided over by Dr. A. Eugene Washington, dean of the school and vice chancellor of health sciences.

In his address, Geffen spoke about his “magical odyssey in Oz,” referring to L.A, the beginning of his career as a nurturer of talent in music and movies, and the important role UCLA played in those early days.

“It’s not possible for me to exaggerate how proud I am to have my name associated with this incredible institution and the talented doctors who are making lives better for so many people around the world,” Geffen said. “You’re making the world a better place.”

In 1995, Geffen donated $10 million toward UCLA’s Westwood Playhouse, renamed the Geffen Playhouse.

Then in 2002, he made a $200 million unrestricted gift to UCLA’s medical school — the largest ever given to UC and to UCLA. At the time, it was the largest single donation ever made to a U.S. medical school. and helped elevate the school to a world-class institution for education and research. CHLA Ranked #1 On West Coast For the third straight year, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles is ranked among the top five children’s hospitals in the country, a distinction that recognizes the hospital’s clinical expertise and the quality and breadth of its patient care.

CHLA was also named to the elite Honor Roll of the nation’s “best” children’s hospitals in the U.S. News & World Report rankings released online Wednesday It is one of only 10 children’s hospitals in the country and the only one on the West Coast to make the magazine’s honor roll in 2014-15. CHLA has earned a spot on the list every year since it was established in 2009 —an achievement no other pediatric medical center in California can claim.

“This recognition is a reflection of the outstanding skills of our entire clinical staff,” says Richard D. Cordova, FACHE, CHLA president/CEO. This year, CHLA’s orthopaedics department was second in the nation, while cancer and neonatology were ranked fifth and sixth, respectively. In addition, cardiology and heart surgery and diabetes and endocrinology were both ranked seventh nationally, while gastroenterology and GI surgery earned

CHLA overall scores placed it among the top five children’s hospitals nationwide, and CHLA equaled or improved its national ranking in five of the 10 categories compared to the 20132014 survey. U.S. News pulls together clinical and operational data in 10 different pediatric medical specialties from a lengthy survey, completed by the majority of the 183 pediatric centers asked to participate in the rankings. The magazine requires hard data such as availability of key resources and ability to prevent complications and infections, as well as survival rates, nurse staffing, subspecialist availability, procedure volume and many more pieces of critical information. The data from the survey is combined with recommendations from pediatric specialists on the hospitals they consider best for children with challenging medical conditions.

I’m afraid it will ruin their relationship if they are at separate schools. Is this the case, or would their relationship be strengthened from being apart from one another?

Shirelle S. A. Dear Shirelle: 100 percent, Yes! It is okay to send your children to different schools. In fact, sometimes it’s required to benefit the children’s different needs.

If, for example, you have one child with a learning disability and another who is mainstreamed, then you’ll need two schools to go to, to best fit your children’s needs.

That said, the calm, cool, collected state of the mother is just as important. So if shuttling two kids across town to two different schools leaves her harried and frazzled, then it may be better to keep the children together.

Bottom line, the choice needs to be a family one; not only based on the needs of the child, but the whole family.

Q. Dear Dr. Fran: How do I explain to my children the dangers of strangers without giving them nightmares?

Dr. Fran Walfish Answers Your Questions A. Dear Ingrid: before talking to your children, you need a good “self thermometer” to make sure you don’t have signs of fear or anxiety in your voice, facial expression, or body language. If you do, you may deliver the fear in the message that you’re telling them.

Once you’ve got a level head, you can tell them that we live in a world where most people are good people. But, walking among us are a few bad ones. We can’t tell by looking at them if they’re good or bad, so we have to be extra careful.

These are what we call strangers.

This conversation starter is your springboard for the foundation of the talk. From here, you let them know that because we don’t know if everyone is good, we have to be extra careful with strangers. This means: • We don’t open doors to strangers.

• If someone wants you to look for a lost pet, you don’t help them because they may be trying to trick you.

• Don’t take candy from people you don’t know.

Then, turn it onto your child and have them tell you a scenario where a stranger may try to trick them.

Keep it short and simple— this is especially true for the younger children.

“Home sales are up all along the coast,” reports Agency Founder and CEO Mauricio Umansky. He says that the driving force is the lack of inventory. “One thing’s for sure, God is not making any more land, especially on the coast. Coastal communities are coming back with a vengeance.”

“Real estate has come to be viewed as more of a global investment hedge against political and economic unrest.

That along with the real luxury real estate market is propelling prices. A lot of offshore money is coming in,” said Billy Rose, Agency President.

One area that continues to show

strength is the luxury condominium market. The Los Angeles Times reports that a shortage of condominiums in downtown Los Angeles has driven prices sky high. The squeeze for inventory has driven median resale prices from $369,000 in 2010 to $622,100 in May 2014.

Last month the Agency sold out its 244 luxury units at the Ritz-Carlton Residences at L.A. Live when a Chinese buyer paid over $4 million for a penthouse. No new units are expected to hit the market soon, as many developers switched plans to rentals, vs. condos in the last market drop.

The luxury real estate market is healthy and growing in Beverly Hills.

original plans submitted in 2008, the project may end up getting kicked back to the City Council.

“The Architectural Commission is one step in the process toward obtaining building permits,” Lait said. “The applicant must still demonstrate compliance with the Specific Plan and if modifications are proposed, have those changes reviewed by the Director of Community Development or Planning Commission and City Council, depending on the extent of the proposed changes.”

The nine-acre luxury hotel is being developed through a partnership between a private investor group led by Alagem Capital Group and clients of Guggenheim Partners. Construction on the 12-story, 170-room hotel is currently slated to begin in summer with a 2017 opening.

Architectural Commission Chair James Blakeley, III told The Courier that plans approved in 2008 stipulated that the project could not receive final approval until the commission signed off on landscaping, lighting and design.

“Our interpretation was that they were asking for final approval,” he said, following a pre-meeting to set the agenda last Tuesday. “Our answer back was there’s not enough information in this packet to give final approval back.”

Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills spokesperson Marie Garvey said that even though the design has changed from what was originally approved, the current design is consistent with the approved entitlements and the specifics of the envelope of what was approved.

“We believe this world class design is consistent with the provisions and intent of the Specific Plan," she told The Courier.

The plan will at the very least return to the commission a subsequent time for landscape approval.

“The plans submitted to the architectural commission differ to some degree from those approved by the City Council in 2008,” Lait said, underscoring that the commission’s authority is limited. “It is my understanding that the owner intends to file a formal application with the City illustrating changes between the conceptual drawings and the more developed architectural plans.

“When filed, City staff will evaluate whether the changes require a formal amendment and hearings before the Planning Commission and the City Council or can be approved administratively by the Director of Community Development.”

The Specific Plan that governs the development agreement between the City and the developer for the project states: “Prior to the issuance of building permits, the final design, materials and finishes of the buildings and the proposed landscaping shall be subject to review and approval of the City’s Architectural Commission. Thereafter, all development, that, in the determination of the Director (Community Development Department Director Susan Healy Keene), is in substantial conformance with the Specific Plan shall be issued a building permit without further discretionary architectural review after final review by the Architectural Commission.”

Keene acknowledged that she is the final arbiter for determining if the changes shall be deemed administrative.

“If they make a change that is dramatically different I’m going to send them through a public hearing,” Keene said.

Lait said that any approval Keene makes would be subject to a review before the City Council, at the Council’s discretion.

The commission will meet at City Hall Council Chambers on Wednesday June 18 at 1:30 p.m.

Bikel’s 90th birthday celebration at 7:30 p.m., Monday, June 16 at The Saban Theatre, 8440 Wilshire Blvd., will be a rare opportunity to hear such folk legends at Arlo Guthrie, Peter Yarrow and Tom Paxton in solo and “singing with the birthday boy” performances. Bikel’s friend actor Ed Asner will serve as emcee.

The concert “To Theo, L’Chaim, To Life!” will commemorate Bikel’s 75-year career which has included an Academy Award nomination for his supporting role as Sheriff Max Muller in The Defiant Ones (1958), leading Broadway roles, and acclaim as a folk singer and untiring proponent of the art form. In 1959, he was a cofounder of the Newport Folk Festival along with Pete Seeger, Oscar Brand and George Wein.

So Bikel has a more-than-large repertoire to draw from including standards and “songs people know from all over the world,” Bikel says. A longtime proponent and advocate of Yiddish music, he’s an internationalist who speaks and sings in 23 languages and says he may add Bosnian and Sephardic ladino songs to the program.

Rodeo Drive Concours: 100 Years of Horse Power Celebrates Beverly Hills’ Centennial The 2014 edition of the Rodeo Drive Concours will mark the city of Beverly Hills’ Centennial on Father’s Day, June 15 featuring Maserati as the “Honored Marque.”

he Rodeo Drive Committee, in conjunction with the city, has selected the theme “100 Years of Horse Power” to honor this milestone with a one-day, museum-quality installation of vehicles illustrating the city’s history.

From the horse-drawn Wells Fargo Wagon from the turn of the century, to the speedsters of the present, this year’s show will feature cars owned by celebrity residents, and those in film and TV over the last century. Cars owned by such stars as Fred Astaire, Jean Harlow, Tom Mix and Howard Hughes will be featured as well as vehicles that appeared in An American in Paris, The Beverly Hillbillies and HBO’s Entourage.

An annual tradition, the event will feature a superb combination of rare automobiles and motorcycles highlighting the past, present and future at the crossroads of fashion, design and entertainment.

“Beverly Hills’ past is intertwined with the history of the transportation and the automobile.

In 100 years, the streets of this famed city have

gone from real horsepower to the possibility of 200 MPG,” says Concours Chairman Bruce Meyer. “This will be the most highly curated show in the Rodeo Drive Concours’ 21-year history with spectacular examples of cars that have graced the winding tree-lined streets of Beverly Hills over the past century.”

Launching a series of events in celebration of the first 100 years of Maserati, the auto manufacturer will introduce its GT MC Centennial Edition Model adding to the heritage of horsepower on display.

To commemorate its milestone anniversary, Maserati created unique designs of its performance models GranTurismo MC Centennial Edition and GranTurismo Convertible MC Centennial Edition. The limited production models will offer special exterior paint colors, upgraded interiors and new wheel finishes.

Wells Fargo Wagon Makes Appearance At Concours d’Elegance

T

his year’s show opens with an appearance by the famed Wells Fargo Wagon. Before the Beverly Hills Hotel opening in 1912 and before the city was founded in 1914, J. P. Bruso moved to town in 1909 and operated the Wells Fargo express office out of his grocery store and butcher shop continuing to offer customers quick and reliable express shipments of money, goods, and valuables until 1918. In 1923, bridle paths for horses were added to Rodeo Drive and Sunset Boulevard and operated into the 1950s.

Concours Pays Tribute To Beverly Hills Speedway

T

his year’s Concours also pays tribute to the Beverly Hills Speedway, a 1.25-mile track for auto racing that attracted such racing legends as Barney Oldfield and Indianapolis 500 winner Gaston Chevrolet.

Up to 70,000 spectators could attend races where world speed records were set and broken at the time. It was built in 1919 and operated until 1924 on 275 acres of land that includes the site of today’s Beverly Wilshire hotel just outside the “Golden Triangle.”

The Speedway operated for four years and attracted many historically significant competitors including Ralph DePalma, Jimmy Murphy, and Tommy Milton. As the land was deemed more valuable than the track that lay atop it, the property was sold to a developer for $10,000 per acre. By 1928, the Beverly Wilshire would be built on the site of the track’s north-east turn. The Speedway Association would later open a new track in Culver City, just south of MGM studios.

The building boasts a brand new catering kitchen, an exercise studio, multi-purpose room, crafts center, library, meeting rooms and more.

The Chinese traveler is a familiar demographic in Beverly Hills, but their tourist experience in the City is often through a day-trip from another location, rather than hotel stays. The trip was an opportunity to explain that Beverly Hills is perhaps, more central to many of the attractions that Chinese tourists expect to visit.

“We made them feel that Beverly Hills is a destination,” said Bosse.

The delegation was well received throughout the trip. “It was extremely productive,” said Bosse. “It exceeded my expectations. The continuing strength of tourism in Beverly Hills is vital to our economy.

Though there was no time for sightseeing, Bosse and her husband Jon did see the Great Wall of China and visit with a few Panda bears. The trip was taken at their own expense.

They were returning to L.A. from a last hope healing in Rhinebeck, N.Y. by a supposed guru, named John of God in whom Nancy was desperate to believe.

It all began on a trip to Africa in 2006. If one doesn’t recognize her name, Nancy had been a “first lady” in the film world when married to Robert Daly, head of Warner Bros. After their divorce, this was followed with with a marriage to Los Angeles Mayor Dick Riordan, which made her “first lady” of L.A. However, Nancy was a force on her own as not only board chair of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, but for her work as a child advocate in shaping legislation. In other words, the world was her oyster except for this dragging feeling.

She went to her internist who prescribed ultra sound tests. Linda was at her dad’s ranch in Calabasas when her mother phoned her to say that the tests showed two spots on either end of her pancreas.. This is the time when like a blinking sign the word “cancer” blinks on and stays on.

Nancy had stayed close friends with her ex-husband and his new wife. Throughout her illness they were unbelievably caring and helpful.

She went to Johns Hopkins to undergo surgery for a whipple procedure–a case of bad news and worse news. Not only was her pancreas removed but her spleen, which resulted in her becoming a diabetic and the cancer (see ‘NANCY DALY,’ page 38)

The day was September 29th, 1986, and Time Magazine ran a story titled “Mafia on Trial”, featuring John Gotti depicted in pop art colors on the cover.

Gotti and other Gambino family crime associates were on trial for multiple counts of murder, extortion, money laundering, and racketeering.

Commissioned to create the cover was New York socialite and celebrity artist Andy Warhol. Warhol was no stranger to crafting portraits of celebrities, but he was known for his glamorous and brightly colored depictions of celebrities like Liz Taylor and Marilyn Monroe, not esteemed Mob Bosses.

Although Gotti did not fit into Warhol’s usual movie starmusician-artist circle, he did possess some of the attributes that Warhol loved about celebrity life. Gotti was known as “Dapper Don” because of his personality in front of news cameras and his expensive clothing. He was glamorous in his own right, and a celebrity in his crime driven world.

Warhol, recently acquired 5 silkscreens that Warhol created in preparation for the cover of Time Magazine. These are one of a kind works, which depict the Mob Boss in his serious nature, yet combines the pop art palate of colors that Andy Warhol became famous for.

Linda, brothers Brian andBobby, and Dick Riordan brought her back to Los Angeles where the next act of chemotherapy was to begin. Nancy, who had been a beauty turned 65. Contrary to most prognosis she survived the chemo and her tumor markers were within a normal range.

Linda adds to the story by telling the readers about her own life. After being adopted as a baby by Nancy and Bob, a year later Nancy was pregnant with her first son and the two of them had a heart to heart confession of their love.

Nancy insisted she live her usual life and activities. The pain did not let up and a friend suggested she try “pot” which she did in a big way. Another friend told her about a woman in Idaho who shared an energy, and then there was the friend who recommended the healing guru, John of God, as a last resort. Nancy learned he was holding meetings in Rhinebeck.

With Linda, and her nurse, Laurie, it was decided to make a pilgrimage to that meeting. At such times, it helps to have friends with planes. It was hopeless going in and going out. Nancy was so ill the doctors did not want to let her fly back to L.A., nor to check out of the hospital but she insisted. Linda called her brothers, rented the Sundowner and like a Greek tragedy, the dye was cast.

Produced in aid of AIDS Assistance Program, a nonprofit providing its low-income clients with monthly food vouchers that can be exchanged for nutritional support at local public supermarkets sinjce 1991.

Held al fresco on a fairway of the super-exclusive and reclusive O’Donnell Golf Club in downtown Palm Springs, the nearly 1,500-guest event combines an extensive silent and live auction with a catered dinner and world-class entertainment.

Under the supervision of AIDS Assistance Program’s talented and well-connected CEO/Executive Director Mark Anton, the Evening Under the Stars gala has long been noted for the quality of its performances. For example, last year’s high-powered entertainment featured a concert by Cyndi Lauper performed before a

black-tie attired crowd. This year, “disco” was the theme.

Inspired by the book First Ladies Of Disco written by James Arena, the performances celebrated the positive, uplifting spirit of disco while showcasing the women who sing it.

Imagine, 10 disco queens performing live on the specially built stage–there was enough energy generated during the 90-minute concert to light up a small city.

No formal attire was needed this year. In keeping with the spirit of the event, guests wore colorful, open-to-the-waist blouses, pounds of bling and platform shoes … and these were just the men.

Of course it wouldn’t be a Desert gala without honorees, and Evening Under the Stars is no exception. James Houston and Harold Matzner shared a humanitarian award; Eisenhower Medical Center and Dr. John Stansell were acknowledged for their work in the area of HIV and AIDS; a community hero award went to Steve Kaufer; and, Joyce Shampeny was teemed with Rabbi Sally Olins for a community service award.

From The Publisher MARCIA WILSON HOBBS While we all get set to honor our dads–living and deceased–this Sunday, below is the final in a series of stories on local mother/daughter philanthropists in their support of The Blue Ribbon at The Music Center. We do love all dads, too, and wish them the happiest of Father’s Days while they enjoy the Rodeo Drive Concours D’Elegance.

Judy Bedrosian (mother of Karyn Coyne) •Were you brought up to appreciate the value of giving back and, if so, who instilled this spirit in you? I was not exposed to philanthropy as a young person. My family was not financially able to donate to any organization with the exception of our church. Because my mother worked in our family business, she had little time to do any volunteer work. Following my marriage, I found myself involved in a number of diverse groups, some fund-raising and several which involved only giving time. The spirit of “giving back” just evolved over the years.

•How did you first go about introducing your daughter to philanthropy? I think Karyn just naturally had a “service spirit.” While in high school, she was doing community service before it was a requirement for graduation. As soon as she could drive, she would spend Sunday afternoons tutoring boys in math at a detention center in Malibu. When she was in 7th grade, we both joined National Charity League where she was a Ticktocker. One of her responsibilities was to work with campers during the summers at Rancho del Valle in Woodland Hills, which was part of Crippled Children's Society. We were both expected to fulfill a certain number of hours annually which included volunteering at the National Charity League Thrift Shop. This program lasted until she graduated from high school and her (and my) reward was for her to be presented as a National Charity League debutante.

•What have you personally gained from “giving back?”

In retrospect, I gained a great deal from my experiences with charitable and service organizations. I have learned leadership and organizational skills which I never would have had were it not been for my involvements in these groups. In addition, I've learned the discipline of “showing up” when I could easily have made an excuse and stayed home. On a more personal note, I have made lifelong friends…people who I never would have met had I not expanded my horizons and accepted the invitations to become a part of something bigger than my own world.

•What are some of the reasons you joined Blue Ribbon and why did you encourage your daughter to join? As a young married woman, I would read about The Amazing Blue Ribbon 400 in the society section of the Los Angeles Times. It always sounded so glamorous and exciting–so far from my life in the north San Fernando Valley. To be quite honest, when inJudy Bedrosian & vited to become a member, I did not really know what the daughter Karyn Coyne Blue Ribbon did aside from raising money for The Music Center. Over the years, I have so enjoyed the times helping at the Children's Festival–a real “feel good” experience. I also love the fact that our membership in Blue Ribbon is something that my daughter and I are privileged to share.

Karyn Coyne (daughter of Judy Bedrosian) •How/when were you introduced to the concept of “giving back?” I think it goes as far back as elementary school. One of my first memories was my mom being involved and serving as president of the Parents-Teachers Association. By the end of elementary school, my family was quite involved with our church, where I found many ways to be of service whether volunteering to help with projects or fund-raising activities. When I was in 7th grade, my mom and I participated in National Charity League and volunteered for years together through that.

•How instrumental was your mother in sharing this concept with you? My mother and I have always done so much together with various non-profit organizations which started when I was in junior high. I followed her as a member of groups like Blue Ribbon, the Council of the Children’s Burn Foundation, and the Founding Associates of the John Douglas French Alzheimer’s Foundation.

Even when we are not in the same groups, we can still count upon each other to help when needed. When I was in college and graduate school, my mother asked me to help with several of the organizations important to her including The John Douglas French Alzheimer’s Foundation and The Music Center. Then for several years, I chaired a charity golf tournament for years to benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Hollywood and could always count on my mom to volunteer and recruit her friends to help me with that event.

It’s only looking back on all of this, that it’s easy to see the concept of “giving back” has been something we have spent a lifetime sharing.

•What have you gained by being a member of Blue Ribbon? What has been incredible about being a part of Blue Ribbon is that I was able to join a group in which I knew so many women through my mother and had known most of my life and greatly admired. These were all women whose lives, in a large part, have been defined by their service to our community through Blue Ribbon and dozens of other non-profit organizations.

Being the daughter of a Blue Ribbon member, I have always valued the tradition of what the group has brought to our county and The Music Center. These women have done so much by bringing performing arts to the children of Los Angeles. It has been an honor to be a part of it.

Being able to work side by side with these women has brought out the best in me. In so many ways, it has helped me strive to be as well-rounded an individual as I’d hope to be. This is due to the interaction with so many women of such high caliber and esteemed backgrounds.

•What have you learned from your mother about philanthropy that you hope to pass on to your children? I think to a certain extent we have learned from each other and perhaps that is what I hope to pass on to my children. Philanthropy and “giving back” is something that we can do as a family. When philanthropy is a family priority, it makes it much easier to integrate it into day-today life. It’s much harder to carve out the time and resources to “give back” when your family doesn’t understand or support what you are doing or why it is important to you.

Due to the natural ebb and flow to life, my mother and I have alternated taking the lead in our family’s charitable endeavors. It’s important to understand there are times when you are able to do more and times when you have to do less. But no matter how much time you are able to commit

Rabbi Jacob Pressman FRIDAY 13TH, A FULL MOON AND OUR PET SUPERSTITION This week, Friday the 13th and the full moon come together to give us good or bad luck according to our pet superstition. It also gives us The Courier with its full measure of information.

We may not admit it in public, but certain numbers seem to reveal that we are more superstitious than we think. For example, according to a UC Berkeley study, black cats are far less likely to be adopted at animal shelters than cats of another color.

Some people take a day off to avoid working on Friday the 13th. They might be 20-million in our nation, according to what I read. They won't eat in restaurants or travel on that doomed day. If you are looking to save money on a flight ticket, that is actually a good day to consider.

Full moons also have the power to turn people into “luna”tics which means that today, Friday, has twice the chance to raise your anxiety.

SPECIAL LETTER TO L.A. COUNCILMAN KORETZ There is quote from you in the press about Uber... ”When it comes to public safety, there shouldn't be a double standard in Los Angeles”... that's a terrific quote. How come it doesn't apply to the residents of the Bel-Air community? There is no more important issue at stake than the safety and security of your constituents.

Simply put – the situation on the roads of Bel-Air is unsafe – there are too many earth hauling trucks, cement trucks and other sub-contractor trucks going through the hills of this community at one time. We have no idea whether or not the contractors or developers have enough liability insurance in case of an accident (you know about the tragic events on Loma Vista). Do the trucks have proper liability insurance and how often are they inspected?

Are the driver's properly licensed? These are only a few of the questions our organization raised and asked you to get answers to (public safety being paramount) and the response has been a Simon and Garfunkel song, Sounds Of Silence. What a hypocrite you are; there is a double standard, it’s the one you created. There is one set of rules for the developers (who cavalierly disregard the conditions they agree to) and one for the residents (just don't respond to them – there are multiple examples of you ignoring requests for help). You have allowed this community to be turned into a cauldron of chaos – unsafe roads, mind-boggling traffic during the week, roads being torn up, constant noise, power outages because of lines being cut during excavations, and continually taking the sides of the developers over the residents.

The question we all want to know is when are you going to fulfill your responsibility to our community. You've been missing in action and it’s really time you show up. Note well – this community is absolutely livid and angry at you...either be our representative, or we will find an alternative.

to service, you never stop. The degree to how much you can do might fluctuate over your lifetime but staying connected to those organizations important to you is the key.

My mom’s father lived to be 104 and people used to ask him the secret to his longevity. He would say: “It just takes time.” I think a life of service is no different. It just takes time. There can be longevity to service. As you look at a lifetime of service, you can start to appreciate how much can be accomplished. This is probably the greatest lesson that I would like to pass to my children.
