By Laura Coleman The chasm between Beverly Hills teachers and administrators reached a new low this week with Chief Academic Officer Jen Tedford’s announcement that after 21 years with Beverly Hills Unified she would be moving to El Segundo Unified to become that district’s high school principal.

In an email sent out to colleagues early Wednesday morning, just after the El Segundo Board of Education voted her into the position, Tedford wrote: “It is bittersweet to leave this amazing district, and I confess, I am already missing you all, and it is still only June. What I will

The council rejected hiring a real estate professional during the facilitated discussions, fearing that an expert, “would put their thumb on the scale,” said Councilmember John Mirisch.

By Victoria Talbot The Beverly Hills City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to accept a recommendation to hire Sukhsimranjit Singh, Associate Director of Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution and Pepperdine University Assistant Professor of Law, to facilitate discussion between landlords and tenants to further refine the Rent Stabilization Ordinance.

Singh served on the faculty at Willamette University College of Law and Willamette School of Management teaching mediation theory and advocacy. He is a distinguished mediation and dispute resolution scholar and has also worked with the city of Salem, Oregon as a mediator.

Beverly Hills City Council Approves $475.2M Budget, Police Management MOU

Beverly Hills Doctors Send Mice To Space As One Giant Step To Cure Osteoporsis

By Laura Coleman Earlier this month, some 40 mice hitched a ride on a SpaceX commercial resupply flight to the International Space Station where researchers will be able to test out an experimental drug to treat osteoporosis, which is based on a bonebuilding protein called NELL-1 discovered by Beverly Hills resident Kang Ting. Together with his wife, Chia Soo, Kang has been spearheading a team of UCLA scientists researching the experimental drug.

This experiment marks the first time UCLA rodents have gone to space.

“The NELL-1 gene is in part how mother nature grows bones in babies,” explained Soo. “Space creates situations of micro-gravity that are literally not replicable on earth. It’s really the ultimate testing ground.”

Soo said that tests on earth have already shown that healthy mice appear to actually grow more bone when the drug has been introduced into their bodies on Earth. Human

trials, however, are still far out.

The conditions on space, where bone loss is greatly accelerated, will provide a much better understanding of the drug’s potential, she said. More than 200 million people worldwide are affected by osteoporosis.

“It will literally grow bone,” Soo stated.

Whereas on Earth, humans typically lose about 0.5 percent of their bone mass each year after the age of 50, in space bone loss increases significantly due to the lack of gravity. Astronauts can lose around 1.5 percent of their bone mass each month. If successful, the drug could theoretically be used both to rebuild bone and block further bone loss, improving health for crew members in orbit and people on Earth.

return of rodents to earth 30 days out. The other half will stay for an additional four weeks. On Earth there are also 40 ground control mice going through the same tests.

The project, which has been 18 years in the making, is being done in collaboration with NASA and the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space, which manages the U.S. National Laboratory on the space station.

Successful development of this drug could help veterans recover from traumatic injuries, reverse the effects of osteoporosis and bring mankind one step closer to surviving long-term in space.

By Victoria Talbot On Tuesday, the City Council approved a budget of $475.2 million, with revenues of $236.862 million and capital improvements of $78 million for projects including the City’s efforts to bring fiber optic internet to every home, the La Brea Basin Water Well Development and the ongoing restoration of Beverly Gardens Park.

The City’s top revenue sources include property taxes, sales taxes, the transient occupancy tax and business taxes.

For Fiscal Year (FY) 2017/18, these four sources are projected to increase by 3.1 percent over the projected FY 2016/17 revenues, or $230,198,000.

Budget enhancement requests were presented by the individual departments on May 9 and May 11 during their presentations at the budget study sessions.

Budget enhancements, which were generally approved by the council, total $7.611 million, and are offset by $1.237 million to total $6.374 million.

During the presentation, Councilmember John Mirisch used his soapbox to rail against

“snowballing” City employee retirement benefits. “We have to do a better job,” he said, likening pensions to the Titanic. “We can’t blame Sacramento.” Mirisch believes the City should negotiate a cost-sharing initiative with the employees.

The City Council also approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the Beverly Hills Police Management Association (BHPMA), which covers all Police employees at the rank of Police Captain and Police Lieutenant. The agreement, which expired Oct. 6, 2016, does not provide retroactive salary increases to that date.

With the new MOU employees will receive a 10.5 percent base salary increase that includes a nine percent retirement contribution offset.

On Oct. 1, 2017, employees will receive a 2.38 percent increase and on Oct. 1, 2018, they will receive a 2.25 percent increase.

The MOU is good for three years until Sept. 30, 2018.

The Beverly Hills Police Management MOU was approved 4-1, with Mirisch voting against.

By Victoria Talbot More than 200 residents and friends joined Mayor Lili Bosse Monday morning to celebrate Arbor Day at Roxbury Park by planting a Chinese Elm and Pink Flowering Trumpet Trees.

The celebration, originally marked for April 26, was rescheduled due to high winds to coincide with Mayor Bosse’s signature Walk with the Mayor event, bringing a record crowd to the proceedings.

Bosse said there couldn’t be a better pairing than the health of the environment, the trees, and the health of the community.

“Monday is truly the best day of the week because of the community of walkers... it is extra special as we celebrate the trees and community

bonds that we all value and cherish,” she said.

The City boasts more than 25,000 street and park trees and this year marks the 32nd year in a row that the City has been recognized with the Tree City USA designation. By Laura Coleman Crustacean Beverly Hills is set to transform into two restaurants this summer. With the revamp set to begin on Thursday, locals have just one week to get their final garlic noodle fix before the two new dining concepts open in October.

“We’ve had such loyal patrons over the years, but as times passes, so do the palates of the next generation of Crustacean diners,” said House of AN Chief Executive Elizabeth An. “What we’re unveiling in the fall of 2017 is an evolved concept of Crustacean cuisine that we hope to grow even further over the next 20 years to come.”

As a part of the renovation, House of AN signed another 20-year lease at the current Crustacean Beverly Hills address.

Chef Tony Nguyen will be at the culinary helm for both restaurants. Nguyen, who has been at House of AN’s Orange County restaurant, AnQi, since 2014, will work closely with Master Chef An to pay homage to Crustacean’s rich culinary history while bringing his unique inventive approach to modern Vietnamese cuisine.

Each floor of the current two-story structure will house a different restaurant with its own separate entrance. The first floor will be the new

Crustacean restaurant featuring a revamped menu of Crustacean classics, small plates, and prix fixe tasting menus with indoor/outdoor seating on both Santa Monica Boulevard and Bedford Drive; and for the first time in House of AN’s 40-plus year history, patrons will be able to order the An’s famous garlic noodles to go via the Bedford Drive patio curbside.

The second restaurant will be located on the second floor, with the An family still keeping the name and menu for that new spot a surprise.

By Laura Coleman On Tuesday, the Board of Education reviewed the district's 2017-18 budget in anticipation of adopting it at its next regular meeting on June 27, offering a sobering picture for those in attendance. With the district slated to deficit spend $3.1 million in the coming year, board members underscored how urgent it is for creative thinking to address a looming budget deficit.

Chief Administrative Officer La Tanya Kirk-Carter said the district was currently over-staffed to the tune of $15$20 million for next year’s projected $66.9 million budget.

In addition to having already reduced $1.4 million from next year’s budget by laying off staff earlier this year, the budget assumes a certificated reduction of $5 million in 2018-19.

The budget also includes a new $800,000 expenditure for the coming year to monitor the Beverly Hills High School Oil Well. Concurrent with the board meeting, across town at

City Hall, the City Council took action to join the school board in appealing last month’s ruling by a federal bankruptcy judge that Venoco, LLC was no longer responsible for monitoring and remediating the BHHS oil well.

Most alarming, perhaps, was the news that the district was on track to drain its “rainy day” Fund 17 within three years as it continues to deficit spend.

“We have a structural deficit, and it’s getting worse and the issue is overstaffing,” said Board President Mel Spitz.

Spitz said he expected between 42 to 50 people would be laid off next year.

Board member Isabel Hacker highlighted how the administration had failed to cut $5 million from the upcoming budget despite knowing that it was necessary. The district has also been told to continue cuts.

Superintendent Michael Bregy assured the board that staff would be starting to investigate ways to increase efficiency and save money.

SKILLS USA—Beverly Hills High School Students Ryan Dubin and Jonah Okum, the 2017 California State Skills USA Community Service Champions, were recognized by the City of Beverly Hills last month in connection with their Skills USA community service work, a program known as "Bedtime with Books - Books and Projects in a Box." Each themed Bedtime with Books box provides everything a school or organization needs to host a story time for elementary students. The BHHS Skills USA chapter has provided 25 boxes, impacting more than 600 students. Cody Leibel In Beverly Park And Beverly Hills Home Linked To Steve Mnuchin Listed

By Victoria Talbot Cody Leibel could be the youngest buyer to purchase a home in the tony Beverly Park environs. The lad, who is 36, is the son of wealthy motorsport enthusiast and home developer Lorne Leibel.

The home was once purchased by country music’s two-time Grammy winner Reba McEntire for $9 million. The 11,600 square-foot home was listed for a $29.995 million and sold for a reported $25.15 million. The 2-acre property includes a formal grand foyer, living room with a wet bar, 2,000 square-foot pool pavilion and lighted tennis court, wine fault and formal dining.

After a career spent starting a song “and then having it fade out into a commercial; it’s nice to be able to finish a song,” says Paul Shaffer.

Known for his work as a pianist on Saturday Night Live and musical director, band leader and sidekick for both of David Letterman’s long-running shows, Shaffer is bringing his World’s Most Dangerous Band to The Saban Theatre, 8440 Wilshire Blvd., for an 8 p.m. concert, Saturday, June 24.

The concert is part of a tour in support of the group’s—made up of musicians from both Late Night With David Letterman and Late Show With David Letterman bands—new self-titled album on Rhino Records released in March.

“The call to make the CD started it all,” says Shaffer.

“Some of us have been together for 22 years—Anton Fig on drums, Will Lee on bass guitars and Sid McGinnis on guitars— and we get along so well and have so much fun, we decided to tour through the spring. And we’re having a gas.”

Other band members include Tom Malone, brass; Frank Greene, trumpet and Aaron Heick, woodwinds.

Shaffer is unusual he says, because he always found musicians who could play by ear, not relying on written charts. “That’s how we survived in David Letterman’s spontaneous world.

He was liable to do anything. If I said, ‘Hey Jude in D,’ they’d be right there, finishing each other’s licks.”

The concerts give Shaffer the chance to “front” his own shows. He tells stories about his career, like how he got started (he conducted Godspell for Stephen Schwartz in Toronto); and pays tribute to his influences.

A joy of working on the

Letterman shows was meeting and working with music icons, Shaffer says, like Miles Davis and James Brown. Shaffer and Brown became friends; and “it was always a music lesson to watch him and play his stuff.”

Vocalist, electric and acoustic guitarist and occasional percussionist Felicia Collins will salute her idol Michael Jackson.

The album features guests like Shaggy on his and Vince Guaraldi’s Cast Your Fate To The Wind and Bill Murray on Happy Street, co-written by Shaffer.

Valerie Simpson solos on I Don’t Need No Doctor. With late husband Nickolas Ashford, she was part of the songwriting production team Ashford & Simpson that co-wrote the song.

Shaffer is trilled that Simpson has joined the tour as a featured singer. “It’s a huge deal.

She’s a legend of soul and Motown.” Ashford & Simpson’s Reach Out and Touch, one of Shaffer’s favorite songs, often features in the concerts.

Beverly Hills Piesta Wrap-Up And Winners

By Victoria Talbot Sunday was the big day for pie bakers in Beverly Hills, who brought their precious pastries to participate in Piesta at the Farmers' Market.

The distinguished judges who held court over the pies Sunday brought their considerable innate talents to the table, literally. The panel included Melanie Shaum, last year's first place pie bake winner; Annie Miler, owner of Clementine, supporting sponsor of the event; Beverly Hills Chief of Police Sandra Spagnoli; Jon Bosse, honorable judge (“First Spouse of Beverly Hills”); Recreation and Parks Commissioner Alissa Roston; and Jon Gluck, a Team Beverly Hills graduate.

First place, along with the title of "Best Tasting Pie in Beverly Hills" and a $200 gift certificate to Clementine went to Mary McLaren of Sherman Oaks for her summer nectarine blueberry pie.

When Brigitte learned about the Piesta Pie Bake Contest, she told Olympia, who wanted to enter using Amelia Bedelia's First Apple Pie Recipe. They used Granny Smith apples and were impressed with how good the pie tasted. Brigitte's daughter, Sofia, 11, entered a pie separately, and Brigitte learned she came in 4th place with her blueberry pie (modifying a Martha Stewart recipe for mini blueberry pies).

Sofia was one point away from tying with the third place winner.

Alyce Williamson on the Power of Horses, Giving and the Arts

A

lyce de Roulet Williamson is a very special kind of 86 years old.

She is, in fact, a Pasadena philanthropist and horse-breeder who has been at the epicenter of Los Angeles’ performing arts scene for more than half a century of dynamic change.

“Everything that’s happened on Grand Avenue has happened during my lifetime,” she declared. “The Music Center, the museums, all of it. Even the (Santa Anita Park) race track was built during my lifetime.”

Vibrant, passionate and full of energy, along with a wicked-crisp memory, Williamson today serves on the boards of the Music Center, L.A. Opera and the L.A. Philharmonic.

“I just think, where would we be without music?” she queried reflexively. “It’s great, because I give that to my children and grandchildren.”

Born in Los Angeles in 1930, Williamson is descended from a French aristocrat who came to California in the 19th century and bought up large swaths of land in the mid-Wilshire area (before it was so named). Her father, Henry de Roulet, a real estate developer who helped build the bulk of the mid-Wilshire area, grew up on a ranch in the

Wilshire/Western area when Wilshire Boulevard was a dirt road surrounded by wheat fields. Williamson’s own childhood home was a sprawling Craftsman house in Hancock Park with one of the first swimming pools around that her father built.

Williamson grew up to become highly skilled in the arts, developing a keen appreciation for music, dance, art and the natural world. In fact, after graduating from Scripps College, where she studied painting under Millard Sheets, Williamson was offered a scholarship to the Martha Graham School of Dance in New York, which her father promptly shot down.

Her destiny, it seemed, was to be linked to a vibrant society, surrounded by like-minded souls who wanted to make the world a richer place.

However, it wasn’t until her mother’s dearest friend, Dorothy Buffum Chandler, who together with Grace Salvatori raised the funds to build the L.A. Music Center, placed Williamson on the center’s founding board that Williamson’s passion for fundraising on behalf of the arts really ignited.

“It’s more than being passionate about something, it’s the motivation. I think a lot of it is really feeling an obli-

gation to help the underserved and people that are less fortunate; and I also think that people realize how important giving culture, music and the arts to young people is,” she said. “It’s mainly working as a team, that’s how things happen.”

José Iturbi Foundation Bringing Gershwin Back To The Bowl

ith its mission of “popularizing classical music one note at a time,” the José Iturbi Foundation is once again sponsoring its annual concert at The Hollywood Bowl featuring a “superstar of tomorrow.”

This year, 31-year-old jazz piano sensation Aaron Diehl will headline “Gershwin Under The Stars,” at 8 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 17 joining the LA Phil and resident conductor Bramwell Tovey for An American In Paris, the I Got Rhythm Variations and Strike Up The Band.

Dadigan notes that Iturbi knew George and Ira Gershwin, and lived down the street from Ira Gershwin on North Roxbury Drive in Beverly Hills for 50 years.

and walks of life, says Dadigan. He enjoyed performing all types of music from the classics, to contemporary to jazz. And he was known to play a mean “boogie-woogie.”

A trained concert pianist and harpsichordist with a music degree from UCLA, Dadigan was Iturbi’s last student and also studied with his sister Amparo, a celebrated

pianist in her own right.

Dadigan co-founded the foundation to share and popularize classical music. The August Bowl concert is a prime example of its mission, promoting emerging talents and sponsoring world-class concerts around the world and locally.

“We always want to bring something special,” says Dadigan, “so our concerts can be a great introduction to the enjoyment of classical music as well as perfect for classical aficionados.”

Last month, Dadigan— also founder and owner of the Hollywood Museum—received the Distinguished Service Award in memory of Johnny Grant at the Holly-

wood Chamber of Commerce Heroes of Hollywood Awards luncheon.

At the museum, Iturbi is represented in the exhibit “An Intimate Look at the Life of a Classical Music Genius” with his favorite Baldwin Grand Piano, the tuxedo he wore and the baton he used to conduct the MGM Orchestra for Anchors Away (1945) and more.

Michael Govan’s Vision for the Future of Art in Los Angeles

A

s the largest art museum in the Western United States, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s (LACMA) current $600 million reconstruction is being followed with great anticipation across the globe.

In April, Pritzker Prize-winning architect Peter Zumthor unveiled a plan for a new museum building where an earthen structure undulates across Wilshire Boulevard, beautifully integrating itself architecturally and philosophically with the L.A. landscape. It marked a dramatic change from the “black flower” design plan of the past, where a black hovering amoeba, situated in the county park that also houses the Page Museum, harkened to the dark green leaves of plant material and the black of the tar pits. Construction on the new building is expected to start in 2019 with an expected completion date of 2023, right when the subway arrives.

Helmed for the past 11 years by Michael Govan, who was recently appointed to the Smithsonian Board of Regents in his hometown of Washington D.C., LACMA’s director has a very clear vision for the future of

the museum as it evolves into its next iteration. During his tenure, Govan has overseen the growth of the museum audience from 600,000 to 1.6 million visitors a year, in addition to erecting new buildings and creating public plazas and sculptures.

Beverly Hills Style recently sat down with Govan to talk about the future and the state of museums.

Beverly Hills Style: How would you characterize the current art landscape?

Michael Govan: L.A. is the most diverse, exciting place. I just love the multi-cultural dimension of Los Angeles. And also that so many people here are part of a creative economy.

There are just so many people who live and work here who have some relationship to art and creative work. So you have both that interest in art and the diversity here that makes the audience fantastic. (Today) there are more productive artists working in L.A. than in any other city at any time in history.

And that itself makes the environment very exciting.

BHS: What is the architectural vision for the new main building?

Govan: The idea is to build this new building that would signify a set of values about an art museum that would really convey the strength of Los Angeles. Most of the museum is surrounded by glass, so rather than that idea that a museum is behind a stone wall, you’ll be driving down Wilshire and you’ll be looking in the museum. That in itself is a big innovation; to have that sense of transparency, that sense of openness. A lot of people have never visited an art museum.

They don’t know what’s inside.

BHS: What is your vision for the museum as it evolves?

Govan: I do believe that the idea of fixing our permanent collections is not the path for the future for this museum. It’s very ironic to me that the largest percentage of our visitors visit the special exhibitions and not the permanent collection. And this is true in many museums. I think that we need to make more of an event around our collections. So the new building is designed to be able to accommodate

slow rotations of collections. So, within a three-year period, you might see (Georges de La Tour’s) “Magdalen” in a series of rooms that showcase the Baroque period and around. And then you might see it a few years later in an exhibition of objects of mediation or devotional objects. Working collaboratively with the curators, I’m going to present a museum that tells stories.

Designed by the renowned Swiss architect Peter Zumthor, the fulcrum of LACMA’s comprehensive $600 million reconstruction will be an S-shaped building that curves as it bridges Wilshire Boulevard. Zumthor’s plan calls for an “elemental building” to house seven clusters within the larger form. The proposed building, expected to begin construction within two years, will be made of concrete, reminiscent in both texture and hue of some of mankind’s more primitive earthen dwellings, with rough walls that look old, incredibly high ceilings in parts, and an “art bridge” to continue the museum across Wilshire Boulevard. With no singular entrance (there are four entrances planned) and no one single facade, LACMA Director Michael Govan says it will speak to the city’s diversity by eliminating a sense of hierarchy for the collections housed inside the new light-filled museum punctuated with windows. “I think the museum needs to emote that non-hierarchal view and the many cultures in L.A.,” Govan said.

ome to the nation’s largest collection of contemporary art from the Middle East, LACMA is increasingly gaining recognition for its scholarship in this arena. Currently on view through July 2, Abdulnasser Gharem: Pause, marks the first solo presentation by the Saudi Arabian artist in the U.S. and offers visitors a particularly meaningful experience.

The exhibition, curated by Linda Komaroff, LACMA’s head of Art of the Middle East, includes 11 remarkable works of sculpture, stamp paintings, prints, and film—all of which were created in the aftermath of the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001 by Saudi Arabian artist Abdulnasser Gharem.

Center destroyed on television, Gharem learned that two of the hijackers were former classmates. For this exhibition, Gharem examines certain universal dichotomies that lead one to choosing his or her path in life. The result is a powerful grouping of new works.

For example, in “Hemisphere” (pictured), which is comprised of a digital print and lacquer paint on rubber stamps on aluminum, Gharem alludes to the duality inherent in most faiths.

“Abdulnasser Gharem belongs to a pioneering generation in Saudi Arabia that has introduced a local arts community to the global discourse. Gharem is at the forefront of this movement,” said Komaroff.

For example, Nancy Sinatra was in her Beverly Hills boutique almost daily when she first opened, Susanna recalled, offering her support and friendship.

Famed for designing Hillary Rodham Clinton’s pantsuits since the time she was First Lady, the small haute couture fashion house in Beverly Hills is indeed a destination for women who want to attire themselves in ensembles that radiate success.

“I want to create a Fortune 500 customer,” she explained, noting that her moniker for the last couple of decades has been “dress for success.”

This fall, Susanna is launching her new “Mother of the Bride” line which is geared for all those going to weddings that need complete wardrobes for all the events. But the key word in all of it remains, Susanna says, “elegant.”

J. Paul Getty Museum To Repatriate Italian First Century B.C. Sculpture

By Victoria Talbot The J. Paul Getty Museum announced Wednesday that it will voluntarily return a marble statuette representing the god Zeus to Italy.

Acquired in 1992, Zeus Enthroned is 29inches high and dates to 100 B.C. and was purchased in 1992.

In a press release, the museum characterized the return as “voluntary” following “thorough consideration of information provided by Italian officials, including a recently discovered fragment of the statue.”

The statue was returned Wednesday at the Getty Center to Italian authorities under the supervision of Italian Consul General for Los Angeles Antonio Verde, and with the cooperation of the Italian Ambassador to the United States Armando Varricchio.

The Italian antiquities authorities tested their theory that the fragment joined the sculpture on a visit to the Getty Museum in 2014.

“Everything about my mother’s life is about survival,” Simmons said. “[The Holocaust] is not something that happened in the past,” he added. “It was yesterday.”

After the Palm Springs City Hall was raided by the FBI just over a year ago, and the arrest of the city’s former mayor and two downtown land developers on multiple criminal counts several months ago–which charges each defendant has denied–“transparency” became the byword in conducting civil affairs. Therefore, it came as no big surprise to learn that a hiatus has been called for placement of any more stars in the Palm Springs Walk of Stars after the 417th star last week.

Since 1992, the non-profit Walk of Stars authorized that stars placed in various spots around downtown Palm Springs were to honor leaders in the arts, philanthropy and civil leadership … all having some past or present contact with Palm Springs.

While there are many world famous honorees’ imbedded in the Walk of Stars, there are some star recipients whose names are only known by their mothers and immediate family. And, oh yes, there is also $10,000, the present going price before the June moratorium for adding new stars takes effect.

Director of Community Development Susan Healy Keene presented a completed draft of the proposed rental registry and a workflow outline, created with the assistance of consultants Management Partners. The rental registry is the first phase of the rent stabilization program, listing all rental housing units in the City together with detailed information concerning the property, its ownership and property management, information about the current or previous tenant for each unit, the nature of a unit’s vacancy status if it is vacant, and information concerning the actual rent amount.

The information will be used to establish a baseline and permissible rents for each unit.

Landlords will be required to submit a form for each unit in their buildings. The form has been approved by the City’s attorneys and is modeled on the form used by the City of Los Angeles.

Online registration will be open for a period of 30 days beginning July 24. Following a staff review and certification of the rents, landlords and tenants can file an appeal 15 days after the rent is certified. Appeals will be before an administrative hearing officer and a decision

Residents engaged with City staff to ask questions and challenged whether all the stumps actually needed to be removed for the construction project. In fact, the curb and gutter construction needs 12 inches of space.

Vice Mayor Julian Gold and Councilmember Les Friedman expressed their preference to remove all the stumps, with the desire to “beautify” the parcels.

In a 3-2 majority consisting of Mayor Lili Bosse and Councilmembers John Mirisch and Robert Wunderlich, the City Council directed that the stumps should be sheared off at the 12-inch mark so that there is enough room behind the curb to form the curb and gutter, and that no stumps should be unnecessarily removed.

Approximately 28 stumps will be removed for the construction. Yelton said some stumps, which may be more unstable, could dislodge in the shearing.

The shearing would take place during the construction phase.

Yelton pointed out that though many of the stumps are not living, many have sprouts and continue to grow roots, which he said may someday intrude on the curbs under construction.

However, the same potential intrusion is possible, given that the City’s plan is to plant ficus hedges.

Ficus are notorious for uprooting sidewalks and streets because of their aggressive root systems. In cities around the Southland, they are being removed as street trees because of their destructive roots. It is unclear if the proposed bushes are different.

Plans call for a greenscreen surrounding the private property ringed with a hedge of ficus that will be seen from the street.

Mayor Lili Bosse and Councilmembers John Mirisch and Robert Wunderlich seemed sympathetic with the concerns of citizens expressed in public comments, regarding the significance of keeping the stumps, beyond the aesthetics.

Vice Mayor Gold spent much of the time inside the trolley during the presentation, and away from the discussion.

The stumps have come to be a symbol of the City’s hollow promise to replace the trees in the aftermath of the cutting, which is not in the parcels’ future. Residents expressed their concerns that the stumps should not be removed without replacing the trees.

Resident Marilyn Gallup expressed her concern at the May 16 meeting that the stumps are evidence that could be part of a future lawsuit.

“For me it’s not about evidence or lawsuits,” said Bosse.

After Bregy told Tedford three months ago that she could resign or be released to a nonadministrative assignment, supporters swiftly launched a change.org petition urging the Board of Education to keep Tedford in her current role. The board ultimately offered her a new one-year contract for her position, but the writing was on the wall.

On Sept. 8, the staff will provide the City Council a progress update and begin issuing notice of violations to landlords who fail to file. The City is developing a database to assist with the management of the rental registry.

Two Community Education Workshops have been scheduled for landlords and tenants.

The first is at the Beverly Hills Public Library auditorium on June 17, 10-11:30 a.m. and the second is 7 -8:30 p.m. at City Hall in the Municipal Gallery.

Following public comments from a tenant and a landlord, the City Council asked that the facilitated meetings, which had two of the three scheduled on Saturday, be changed to take place in evening hours.

City Manager Mahdi Aluzri said that the City has no jurisdiction over the private land that is owned by the Beverly Hills Land Company (BHLC), which has plans to remove all the stumps on their property without replacing the trees.

In total, there are 408 stumps left on the parcels, including 205 trees and 203 bushes. Three trees and 10 bushes are solely on the City right of way; 121 trees and 18 bushes are shared with BHLC, and 175 bushes and 81 trees are solely on BHLC property.

Though some of the stumps were historic, most of them resulted when the BHLC, with the complicity of some City staff, cut down all the trees on the north side of the parcels over the weekend of Nov. 2122, 2015.

Parcels 12 & 13 are heavily contaminated with arsenic and are under the supervision of the State of California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), which was never alerted to the tree-cutting. Safety measures were not taken on a windy Santa Ana weekend, and the air filled with the dust from the soil. A block away, folks at the Farmers’ Market were unaware of the potential health hazard.

The tree-cutting has left the lots a barren reminder of the incident, and questions remain.

One question residents asked is what would happen on Santa Monica Boulevard if the trees had not been removed?

Many believe that the City was complicit with BHLC in their removal because of the construction plans, though the issue has never been addressed.

Residents have repeatedly expressed their concern that there is no plan to replace any of the trees. Site visit partici-

pants were told that the City cannot plant trees within the narrow public right of way and that Lyn Konheim and BHLC are under no obligation to replace the trees.

“We have a situation here,” said resident Lionel Ephraim.

“We are suspicious... We feel that to do a partial clean-up, to take out the stumps, to do a green screen... doesn’t solve it.

Trees were removed. A City asset was destroyed. Residents were harmed. Nothing has been done in one and half years. We want it to stay ugly so that everyone knows what needs to be done.”

Alternatively, the City has done little to fulfill that promise, such as holding the BHLC accountable. The difficulty lies in the issue of City staff complicity with the trees’ removal.

To replace the trees or/and to remove the stumps will require mitigation by the DTSC, including watering, air sampling, and the presence of Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) team members to monitor the activities on the site.

The removal of stumps on their own land and the replacement with ficus bushes and green fences does little to placate residents accustomed to the stately grove which once stood there, a beautiful green barrier to the noise and intrusion of Santa Monica Boulevard.

Perhaps the most pressing question is why no one has ever been held responsible for the incident, among City staff or the BHLC, and why the City continues to pour money into cleaning up the parcels and covering up the damages.

The elaborate trolley trip and charting of each stump’s GPS location plotted on a map with photos are impressive, and probably expensive, but distracting.

The City’s beautification efforts are a hollow attempt to beautify the area and proceed with their construction, without addressing the real underlying problems that continue to fester in the community.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR After reading Robert Block’s Letter to the Editor last week about art in Beverly Hills, I am reminded when former President Obama wrote: “The most important element in art and architecture is human emotion. Some will feel comfortable with the emotions a piece of art evokes while others will just not be happy. And neither emotion is wrong."

I’m so proud to live in the City that embraces human emotion and the importance of art in our lives. Beverly Hills requires that builders of commercial properties devote a part of their budget to providing public art.

I find it fascinating that some see a “sheet metal” collection while others might see the new Burton Way installation, “World On Its Hind Legs” as a timely expression of how, in an era of global warming and despots destroying

lives, we are fighting to keep society and the world as we know it together.

Some walk by the Beverly Hills sign and see a sculpture of “Wile E. Coyote grooming himself” while others see Barry Flanagan’s “Drummer” as an image that conveys an extraordinary spontaneity and naturalness that is missed in the rush of everyday life.

Art can mean much more when we let our imaginations soar. Remember the words of Georgia O’Keefe: “I found I could say things with color and shape that I couldn’t say any other way…things I have no words for.”

And finally, remember that the Fine Art Commission openly solicits suggestions from Beverly Hills residents for works of art and artists they would like to see included in our City collection.

Another Phobia From Roger Lefkon FEAR OF GETTING MARRIED–AGAIN Marriage pundits are in agreement that the smartest people are those who wait a significant amount of time before tying the knot again. Does a 38 year relationship, embracing more than 15,000 meals, 2,500 arguments (a conservative estimate), 4,000 instances of love making averaging 12 minutes (15 on special occasions), saying “I love you” 45,000 times to each other and to our 5 dogs and witnessing Phyllis go on 152 diets (all torturous and largely unsuccessful experiences) seem like a reasonable period of time between exchanging vows for a second time? I would say that we passed the marital litmus test. I have also maintained that letting your loved one see the results of your weigh-in is the indisputable definition of true love, an event that has never happened in our 14,000 day relationship.

Phyllis and I are opposites in virtually every aspect of life. She is frugal and likes to soak uncancelled stamps in a dish of mineral water while I am a big spender that favors lavish vacations, high end restaurants and acquiring stolen art work. I am excessively neat and she is borderline messy, think Felix and Oscar. I like leaving all the lights on as a security measure and to avoid a sudden confrontation with the boogey man while she goes around the house turning them off, fearful our next DWP bill will place us in the poor house. I leave the air conditioning on high, even during a snow storm, while she is a hot devotee. I arise at the crack of dawn while she has great difficulty getting out of bed even during an earthquake. She almost never goes to see a doctor–I visit a physician’s office three times a week even if I’m not sick. She relishes massages while I do not like anyone touching my body unless it’s my dermatologist, a former Playboy bunny. She loves chick flicks and I’m still fighting World War II. She eats healthy, lots of fish, vegetables, fruit, salads while I’m into hot dogs, pizza, burgers, chopped liver and egg rolls.

She lunches with all of her old friends, mine have either passed on or are on life support and she is into brightly colored clothes while I favor the black and brown garb of a Franciscan friar.

Despite this apparent disconnect we are living proof that opposites attract.

Why then after almost four decades of being together would we want to tempt fate and take the plunge, again? After all we have created a formula that works. Well it’s partially because relationship guru’s advocate that second marriages have a higher success rate because you have learned from the mistakes of the first go

around, a theory that has as many holes in it as a slice of Swiss cheese and because our Yorkie, Piper, is growing tired of having to explain our unusual affinity for each other to her canine pals, several of whom are noted anthropologists.

So on a recent rainy night when there was nothing much to do except watch re-runs of The Bachelor, we sat down and decided to surprise our family and friends by getting married. We would make it simple and forgo a traditional wedding and reception. After all we really didn’t need another serving platter, a waffle maker or money, well maybe the cash! Our long time friend Rabbi Sanford Shapero, who longed to update his already impressive resume by marrying us, was recovering from an illness in a rehab facility in Culver City. He reiterated his desire to join us in matrimony and suggested the ceremony take place in his hospital room, and it did. A destination with a lot more appeal than Paris, Tahiti or a sun drenched Greek island.

History will record that the unlikely duo entered Rabbi Shapero’s make shift wedding chapel and with Linda, his significant other and part time wedding planner, plus various doctors, nurses, therapists, and a photographer looking on, Phyllis, looking sensational in a red designer dress, and I were married. True to Jewish custom, following my placing a ring on her finger and lacking a wine glass, I stepped on a cloth covered glass bowl normally used to serve patients fruit Jell-O, making the marriage complete. As the glass shattered the assembled group shouted “Mazel Tov” and, amongst enthusiastic cheering and clapping, broke into a chorus of Stevie Wonder’s Signed, Sealed & Delivered. The entire scene looked as though it belonged in a Mel Brooks movie.

As Cole Porter so eloquently put it: “Birds do it, bees do it, even educated fleas do it, let’s fall in love again” And in true fairy tale tradition “they lived happily ever after.”
