ROAMING ROME — The Beverly Vista choir just returned from a week in Rome, where they staged several performances at iconic venues. Pictured above are members of the choir outside St. Peter's Basilica: Cameron Asher, Rachel Asher, Liv Berg, Nava Bonyadi, Hayley Chechel, Isabelle Corona, Alyssa Galen, Justin Goldstein, Kayla Granitz, Olivia Green, Tyler Janssen, Suhh Yeon Kim, Eunice Kim, Kaylee Kwok, Avery Lo, Arielle Margolin, Edden Mizrahi, Mariah Nicholson, Kate Schirmer, Sophia Schirmer, Ariella Shaoulian, Elise Soufer, and Anna Valsky.
Beverly Vista Choir Returns From Performances In Rome By Matt Lopez Late last year, Beverly Vista choir director Judith Chan received an email that she almost couldn’t believe. It was an invitation to perform in the prestigious Rome International Choral Festival at St. Peter’s Basilica. “At first, I thought it was a joke,” Chan said. But it was no joke, and after months of fervent fundraising, the over 40-student choir just returned from a trip that Chan called “life changing.” The festival ran from June 2027, and invitations largely go out to university choirs and other established ensembles, which made the inclusion of Beverly Vista’s middle school choir all the more surprising. Two years earlier, the choir had performed at New York’s Carnegie Hall.
Shortly after receiving the invitation, Chan said that she knew a trip like that would be fairly expensive. A strong fundraising push began, including an article in the December 7, 2018 edition of the Courier. Chan said that the day after that article was published, a member of the community showed up to the campus with a $2,000 check. “The community support was really overwhelming,” Chan said. The choir packed in six performances at various legendary venues around Italy, including mass at St. Peter’s Basilica, a festival concert with the Honolulu Choral and Orange Lutheran High School Choir, under the direction of Dr. Randall Stroope, at Basilica Di Santa Maria Sopra Minerva. Other performances took place at The Sistine Chapel, Santa (see ‘BEVERLY VISTA CHOIR’ page 17)
By Matt Lopez One month after helping spearhead the City of Beverly Hills’ landmark decision to ban tobacco sales, Mayor John Mirisch discussed the tobacco ban this week at the U.S. Conference of Mayors in Honolulu, Hawaii. Last month, by a unanimous vote from the City Council, Beverly Hills became the first city in the United States to ban the sale of cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars and all other tobacco products. The ban covers grocery stories, gas stations, pharmacies and convenience stores. Under the ban, hotels will still be allowed to sell cigarettes and other tobacco products to registered hotel guests. In his speech at the U.S. Conference of Mayors, Mirisch
said he went into detail on the process the City went through to come to a tobacco ban, and said he received positive feedback on it from other mayors around the country. “There was a lot of interest in our tobacco sales ban,” Mirisch told the Courier. “I discussed our City’s history of leadership in anti-smoking policy and how our recent ordinance was a natural progression.” As part of the four-day event, Mirisch also authored a resolution on local control that passed. Mirisch’s resolution, “In Support of Local Control and Authority,” seeks to push back against federal and state governments attempting to infringe on the authority of local (see ‘MAYORS CONFERENCE’ page 17)

LOCATION:
Commission Meeting Room 280A Beverly Hills City Hall 455 North Rexford Drive Beverly Hills, CA 90210
PROJECT ADDRESS:
1134 Miradero Road (cross street: Schuyler Road)
The Planning Commission of the City of Beverly Hills, at its REGULAR meeting on Thursday, July 25, 2019, will hold a public hearing beginning at 1:30 PM, or as soon thereafter as the matter may be heard to consider the following:
A request for two Variances, three Hillside R-1 Permits, and a Tree Removal Permit to allow for the construction of a new twostory single-family residence (approximately 4,966 square feet) and accessory structure (swimming pool) for the property located at 1134 Miradero Road. The following entitlements have been requested in association with the project: Variance (Building Height). Pursuant to Beverly Hills Municipal Code (BHMC) §10-3-2503, if a site area in the Hillside Area has a level pad elevation that is at least ten feet (10') higher than any adjacent portion of a street, then the structures constructed on that site area shall be constructed within a height envelope that begins at fourteen feet (14') in height at the level pad setback line and increases toward the center of the level pad at a slope of thirty three degrees (33°) to a height of thirty feet (30'). The single-family residence exceeds the height envelope and the Applicant is requesting a Variance pursuant to BHMC §10-3-3700 to deviate from the height envelope requirement. Variance (Front Yard Paving). Pursuant to BHMC §10-3-2518, all paved areas shall be set back a minimum of 5’ from any property line except a driveway or walkway within 5’ of the intersection of the driveway or walkway and the public right-of-way. The proposed Project includes front yard paving that is located closer than 5’ to the front property line but is not within 5’ of the intersection with the public right-of-way and the Applicant is requesting a Variance pursuant to BHMC §10-3-3700 to deviate from the front yard paving setback requirement. Hillside R-1 Permit (Floor Area Off Of Existing Level Pad). Pursuant to BHMC §10-3-2502, a Hillside R-1 Permit is required to allow more than 1,000 square feet of floor area to be located off the existing level pad. The proposed Project includes 1,605 square feet of floor area to be located off the existing level pad. Hillside R-1 Permit (Front Yard Retaining Walls). Pursuant to BHMC §10-3-2516, a Hillside R-1 Permit is required to for walls of no more than six feet (6’) in height to encroach into a front yard without complying with open to view requirements. The proposed Project includes retaining walls that are 6’ in height within the required front yard. The retaining walls do not comply with open to view requirements. Hillside R-1 Permit (Accessory Structure). Pursuant to BHMC §10-2-2526, a Hillside R-1 Permit is required to allow an accessory building (i.e., a swimming pool) to be located on any part of an estate property, which is a property with a site area of at least 24,000 square feet. The proposed swimming pool is located approximately 36’ from the front property line. Tree Removal Permit. Pursuant to BHMC §10-2-2501, a Tree Removal Permit is required to remove any native or heritage tree located within the front yard area. The proposed Project includes the removal of six protected trees within the front yard area. This project has been assessed in accordance with the authority and criteria contained in the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA, Public Resources Code Sections 21000 et seq.), the State CEQA Guidelines (California Code of Regulations, Title 14, Sections 15000 et seq.), and the environmental regulations of the City. Upon review, the project appears to qualify for a Class 3 Categorical Exemption (New Construction or Conversion of Small Structures) in accordance with the requirements of Section 15303 of the state CEQA Guidelines. This exemption is applicable to a single-family residence in a residential zone as well as accessory (appurtenant) structures. Accordingly, the Planning Commission will consider a recommendation to find the project exempt from the environmental review requirements of CEQA pursuant to Section 15303 (New Construction or Conversion of Small Structures). Any interested person may attend the meeting and be heard or present written comments to the Commission. Written comments also may be submitted prior to the public hearing to the Planning Division, via mail: attn. Cindy Gordon, 455 N. Rexford Drive, 1st Floor, Beverly Hills, CA 90210. NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING DATE: July 25, 2019 TIME: 1:30 PM, or as soon thereafter as the matter may be heard LOCATION: Commission Meeting Room 280A Beverly Hills City Hall 455 North Rexford Drive Beverly Hills, CA 90210 The Planning Commission of the City of Beverly Hills, at its REGULAR meeting on Thursday, July 25, 2019, will hold a public hearing beginning at 1:30 PM, or as soon thereafter as the matter may be heard to consider:
AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF BEVERLY HILLS AMENDING THE MUNICIPAL CODE TO REMOVE THE 1,000 ROOM LIMITATION ON THE NUMBER OF HOTEL ROOMS THAT CAN BE APPROVED IN THE CITY AFTER NOVEMBER 1, 1984 In 1984 the City Council adopted an ordinance to establish regulations for hotel development in the Beverly Hills Municipal Code (BHMC). This ordinance included a provision capping the number of hotel rooms that could be approved in the City after November 1, 1984 at 1,000 rooms (BHMC Section 10-3-2869). On May 14, 2019, the City Council held a study session to discuss the hotel room cap and ultimately directed staff to work with the Planning Commission to amend the municipal code to remove this limitation on the number of hotel rooms that may be approved by the City. On July 25, 2019, the Planning Commission will consider an ordinance that would remove the hotel room cap. This Ordinance and the Amendments were assessed in accordance with the authority and criteria contained in the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), the State CEQA Guidelines, and the environmental regulations of the City. The amendments will not have a significant environmental impact and are exempt from CEQA pursuant to Section 15305 of Title 14 of the California Code of Regulations because they represent minor alterations in land use limitations and do not result in any changes in land use or density. Further, it can be seen with certainty that there is no possibility that the amendments may have a significant effect on the environment. Accordingly, the Planning Commission will consider the recommendation to find the Ordinance exempt from the environmental review requirements of CEQA pursuant to Section 15061(b)(3) and Section 15305 of Title 14 of the California Code of Regulations. Any interested person may attend the meeting and be heard or present written comments to the Commission. CATSKILLS – Catskills Theatre Camp has been offered through the Beverly Hills Community Services Department for over 40 years. Catskills Theater Camp for kids aged 5-10 years old engages children in activities that motivate and stimulate the creative mind and promotes teamwork and socialization in a group setting. For children 11-14-years-old, it’s about teaching the technical aspects of drama, singing and dancing, as well as building confidence and promoting human development and positive socialization. Last week, after four weeks of rehearsals and summer-camp fun, the Session One kids performed The Little Mermaid in two separate performances at Greystone Mansion. Lower Catskills’ (ages 5-10) performance was on Wednesday, while Upper Catskills (11-14 year olds) performed with the Orange Cuties, who are the 5-yearolds from the Lower Catskills team. Catskills specialists Lauren Aviram, Montana McIntyre, and Devy Veysey, who helped in the production of the play (and pictured in the back row of phone 2338) attended Catskills Theatre Camp when they were kids. Auto Legend Lee Iacocca Dies In Bel-Air Home At Age 94 By John L. Seitz Lee Iacocca, the “father of the Ford Mustang” and executive responsible for turning around the Chrysler Corporation in the 1980s, passed away in his Bel-Air home from complications of Parkinson’s Disease. He was 94. The only son of Italian immigrants, Iacocca began his life in Allentown, Pennsylvania and attended Lehigh University, and shortly after graduation won a Wallace Memorial Fellowship and went to Princeton. While still in college, he had dreams of working for Ford Motor Company, and began his career there in the summer of 1946. Eventually, he introduced the Mustang in 1964 and became president in 1970.
Ten years later, his tenure at Ford came to a screeching halt after clashing with his boss, Henry Ford, with his abrupt firing shocking the automotive world – particularly since he had just announced a record-breaking $2 billion annual profit. Eight months into his early retirement he was hired by Chrysler, which was on the brink of bankruptcy. As CEO/Chairman of Chrysler Corporation, he took on many additional roles which included having to testify before Congress in order to secure government-backed loan to keep the company afloat long enough for him to turn things around. The $1.2 billion loan was repaid one year ahead of schedule, with interest. While running Chrysler, he
Lee Iacocca
became the face of the company, appearing in more than 70 TV commercials and using his charisma to convince skeptical car buyers to purchase his revamped and more fuel-efficient product line. During his lifetime,
Iacocca received numerous honorary degrees from prestigious colleges and universities, delivered more than 600 speeches and authored three books, including Iacocca: An Autobiography, which sold more than 6.5 million copies, and Talking Straight. With the proceeds from his books, he established the Iacocca Family Foundation in 1984 to cure diabetes, the disease that took the life of his first wife Mary. He was later married to Peggy Johnson and Darrien Earle. However, what Iacocca most wanted to be remembered for was his work as head of the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, which raised funds to restore and preserve the Statue of Liberty and Great Hall of Ellis Island.

Beverly Hills Police Warn Against DUI Driving Over Holiday Weekend By Matt Lopez The Beverly Hills Police Department is warning local drivers to “drive sober or get pulled over” this holiday weekend. Although the Fourth of July was on Thursday, parties and get-togethers often continue throughout the holiday weekend. According to the California Highway Patrol, seven people were killed and 73 were injured in alcoholrelated crashes in California on Fourth of July last year. The weekend itself is one of the most traveled of the year. “The consequences are abundantly clear, but people still make the poor decision to drive after drinking,” BHPD Sgt. Greg Mader said. The BHPD advises anyone heading out for a get-together this weekend to designate a sober driver. “With the rise in rideshare options, there really is no excuse for driving impaired,” Mader said. The average cost of a DUI arrest is approximately $13,500, accounting for vehicle impound fees, fines, attorney fees, auto insurance hikes and other penalties. In addition to alcohol – prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications and marijuana can also all cause impairment and lead to a DUI.

RWall Paint Lounge Opens On Canon Drive By Ashley Asherian After spending two years by the side of his ailing wife in her final years, the artist known as RMoodie needed an outlet. Now, with the opening of Canon Drive’s RWall Paint Lounge, RMoodie has given himself, and members of the community, an artistic means of expressing themselves through a unique form of painting. RWall is the brainchild of exploding glass artist RMoodie, who has established this “paint lounge” as a way for guests of all ages and abilities to merge together and unleash their hidden talents amidst food, wine, and entertainment. RMoodie began his career as founder of KraftMaid Cabinetry, which expanded throughout America and Europe, eventually becoming one of the largest cabinet companies in the United States. He sold his company after his wife of 31 years died of cancer – he spent her final two years by her bedside. Today, RMoodie creates three-dimensional art and wood carvings, and utilizes tempered glass techniques deriving from Dominican prodigy artist, Mariela Moode. RWall Paint Lounge is RMoodie’s new chapter in his artistic life. In May, RWall Paint Lounge joined forces with the Beverly Hills Art Show to ignite the City’s first ever live paint and pour experience, featuring a step-by-step paint class. It also highlighted a sampling of the art to be found just down the block from Beverly Gardens Park. “More than a gallery, it’s a concept where we’ll showcase

the artists in innovative ways, a place where art and people meet,” said RMoodie. Beyond the paint, guests 21-and-older have access to a self service wine and beer station that includes 30 local wines alongside specialty beers in which they may use some “liquid courage” to create the masterpiece of their choosing. Visitors may use a touch screen device that provides information on the origins, alcohol content, and qualities of each wine and beer. This new touch screen technology pouring system is one of many features that differentiates RWall Paint Lounge from similar art establishments in Beverly Hills and the LA area. With a full-service kitchen, the lounge offers a seasonally changing menu. This summer’s specialties include “shareables” such as steak skewers and seafood tacos, “small
bites” like truffle fries with truffle parsley grana padano, and “larger bites” such as wagyu burger and pan roasted chicken with roasted cauliflower. The lounge space, itself, is intimate, vibrant, and an overall enthralling environment to be part of. Every element, from the canvas to the stage design, is meticulously curated by RMoodie himself to maintain the authenticity of his vision through art. As RMoodie tells the Courier, “Whether you choose to come in on a date, with a group of girlfriends, or with your kids…we’ve got you covered.” RWall Paint Lounge is located at 345 N. Canon Dr. The lounge is open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily and as late as 2 a.m. on weekends. For more information, visit https://paintlounge.rwall.com or call 310-734-7878.
Beverly Hills Renters Alliance Launches New Website By Matt Lopez The Beverly Hills Renters Alliance re-launched its new tenant-focused website this week in an effort to support renters in the City of Beverly Hills. Renters make up more than half of the City’s population, and the Renters Alliance helps those residents navigate through amendments and changes to the Rent Stabilization Ordinance, which was originally adopted in 2017. The new-look Renters Alliance website (www.bhrentersalliance.org) features a series of “explainers” that touch on nearly every aspect of tenancy, from initial move-in inspection to security deposits.
There’s also a series of posts that educate and empower renters on in-depth policy analysis and other topics of pertinent interest to tenants. “No organization provides the depth and breadth of reporting and analysis that we do, whether it concerns the current ordinance or the potential impact of proposed ordinance amendments,” Renters Alliance founder Mark Elliot said. The new website also features a voice/text hotline and contact page where renters can report issues of concern. The Renters Alliance also aims to serve as a go-between in connecting renters with the appropriate contacts at City Hall. For more information, visit www.bhrentersalliance.org.

Trump Criticizes ‘Liberal, Sanctuary Cities’ Approach to Solving Homelessness President Donald Trump took aim at “liberal” Los Angeles and California political leaders as he weighed in on the homelessness issue, hinting that he may “intercede” to “get that whole thing cleaned up.” “It's very sad. Very sad. It’s a phenomenon that started two years ago. It’s disgraceful,” Trump said in an interview on Fox News that aired Monday night. “.. I'm looking at it very seriously. We're doing some other things, as you probably know ... but we’re looking at it very seriously.” Trump said many U.S. cities are doing well, but others run by his political opponents who have adopted sanctuary policies are not. “They're usually sanctuary cities run by very liberal people and the states (that) are run by very liberal people, but the thing that nobody can figure out is, do these governors or mayors, do they really think this is a positive? Do they really think this is okay? Because it’s not,” Trump said. “It's destroying their city and it's destroying the whole way of life. And it’s not our country. It's not what our coun-
try's all about.” Trump hinted that he may somehow intervene in the crisis, although he did not give any specifics. “We’re looking at it very seriously,” Trump said. “We may intercede. We may do something to get that whole thing cleaned up. It’s inappropriate. We have to take the people and do something. We have to do something. And you know, we're not really equipped as a government to be doing that kind of work. That’s not really the kind of work that the government probably should be doing. We've never had this in our lives before in our country, and it's not only those few cities, it's a couple of others.” Los Angeles is in the midst of an ambitious $1.2 billion effort to fund homeless housing programs. More than $460 million was recently dedicated to homeless encampment and sidewalk clean-ups. “You can’t have what's happening, where police officers are getting sick just by walking the beat, they’re getting actually very sick, where people are get(see ‘HOMELESSNESS,’ page 9)

HOW DO Y O U F E E L ? SoCal Air Quality Slipping Once Again Despite Clean Air Act Improvements H E A LT H & W E L L N E S S
Air quality is slipping once again following improvements attributed to the 1970 Clean Air Act, it was reported Monday. Bad air days are ticking up across the nation, and emissions reductions are slowing. The most notable setback has been with ozone, the lung-damaging gas in smog that builds up in warm, sunny weather and triggers asthma attacks and other health problems that can be deadly, the Los Angeles Times reported. Health effects from ozone pollution have remained essentially unchanged over the last decade—stubbornly high, according to a study published this year by scientists at New York University and the American Thoracic Society. Nowhere is the situation worse than in Southern California, where researchers found a 10% increase in Southern California deaths attributable to ozone pollution from 2010 to 2017, The Times reported. The region has long
reigned as the nation’s smog capital and has seen a resurgence of dirty air in the last few years, one that has sharpened the divide between wealthier coastal enclaves with cleaner air and lower-income communities further inland with smoggy air. By the end of this year, California regulators must present the federal government with
a plan demonstrating they are on track to slash ozone pollution. Officials say it will take billions in spending to meet smogreduction deadlines under the Clean Air Act, but no one knows where the money will come from, according to The Times. There are other obstacles, such as the Trump administration's efforts to roll back emis-
FDA: Grain-Free Diets For Pets Links To Feline, Canine Heart Disease Recent years have seen a surge in grain-free dog and cat foods, as increasing numbers of pet owners cast aside kibble packed with cheap corn, wheat and barley fillers for what they believe is a healthier alternative. The reality may be more complex, with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announcing it was continuing to investigate a potential link between grain-free diets that have a high legume content and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), a canine and feline heart disease that can be fatal. Thursday’s announcement named 16 pet food brands most frequently identified in 560 cases of individual dogs reported to have the disease between Jan. 1 2014 and April 30, 2018, with 119 of them dying. Among these cases, more than 90 percent were fed products that were "grain-free" and 93 percent of the reported products contained peas or lentils as a main ingredient. “We know it can be devastating to suddenly learn that
your previously healthy pet has a potentially life-threatening disease like DCM,” Steven Solomon, director of the FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine said in a statement. “That’s why the FDA is committed to continuing our collaborative scientific investigation into the possible link between DCM and certain pet foods.” The investigation began last year and isn’t yet complete, but the FDA said it had a “responsibility to shed light on a signal that we have been made aware of and to solicit reports from pet owners and vets that may know of related cases.” DCM is a serious disease of the heart muscle that causes the organ to dilate, making it harder to pump blood and causing the valves to leak. This can cause a build-up of fluid in the chest and abdomen known as congestive heart failure, which can lead to death. It can be reversed if caught early with proper treatment and diet modification. While DCM is not consid-
ered rare, the FDA investigation was sparked by a spike in cases among smaller breeds not genetically prone to the disease. It is not fully clear what it is about these diets that may be connected to DCM. It may be at least partly linked to a deficiency of an amino acid called taurine, and some dogs improved with medical care, diet change and taurine supplement, but others responded to diet change and vet care alone. The FDA did not recommend switching from grain-free foods but advised pet owners to consult their vet for diet advice specific to their animal. The brands named in the release were Acana, Zignature, Taste of the Wild, 4Health, Earthborn Holistic, Blue Buffalo, Nature's Domain, Fromm, Merrick, California Natural, Natural Balance, Orijen, Nature's Variety, NutriSource, Nutro, and Rachael Ray Nutrish. —AFP

typhoid bacteria. The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors called on the county Public Health Department in March to develop a communicable-disease prevention and intervention plan in response to the LAPD employee’s illnesses. The Los Angeles City Council last week allocated more than $6 million for its CARE and CARE-plus teams for clean-ups and homeless outreach services. Trump claimed during the
Fox interview that homelessness was becoming a problem in Washington, D.C. when he took office, but he “ended it very quickly.” “When you have leaders of the world coming in to see the president of the United States and they're riding down a highway, they can't be looking at that,” Trump said. “I really believe that it hurts our country, they can’t be looking at scenes like you see in Los Angeles and San Francisco.”

ting sick,” Trump said. He was referring to incidents in which a Los Angeles city employee said she contracted typhus, and in May an LAPD employee developed symptoms related to typhoid fever while working at the Central Station near Skid Row. Two other employees at the station developed symptoms consistent with the salmonella
sions standards that California relies on to reduce pollution from cars and trucks. With each passing year, Southern California smog regulators are falling further behind in raising the $14 billion they say is needed to pay for less-polluting vehicles and clean the air to federal health standards, according to The Times. Within Southern California, the amount of pollution you breathe is highly dependent on where you live. Smog has eased considerably across the region compared with decades ago. The gains are particularly dramatic in areas closer to the coast such as L.A.’s Westside and downtown, which are now largely spared persistent unhealthy. Levels of ozone pollution. It’s another story farther inland, where communities such as San Bernardino continue to suffer more bad air days, elevated smog levels and some of the highest asthma rates in the state, The Times reported. In 2018, there were only two bad air days for ozone pollution on the Westside and just four in downtown L.A. Not far
away in the San Fernando Valley there were 49. San Bernardino had 102—more unhealthy days than the city has logged since the mid-1990s, air monitoring records show. “We’re not seeing the same improvements as people living near the coast,” said Anthony Victoria of the Riverside Countybased Center for Community Action and Environmental Justice. ”When you’re in San Bernardino you look toward the mountains and it’s not clear. You have layers of smog you can see in the sky. You have people with asthma struggling to breathe, and it’s a devastating thing.” If California regulators fail to submit an adequate smogreduction plan by the end of this year, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency could begin imposing a series of escalating sanctions, including increased restrictions on polluting industries and the loss of federal highway funds. Even more draconian measures could take the form of nodrive days and gas rationing. Airports and shipping harbors could also face limits on emissions.—CNS

of the 20th century, and his books, including The Chronicles of Narnia, still sell in the millions. Max McLean, brings the world famous writer to life in C.S. Lewis Onstage: The Most Reluctant Convert, for 11 performances, July 11-21 at The Broad Stage, 1310 11th St., Santa Monica. In the one-man play, adapted from Lewis’ writings, McLean inhabits Lewis from the death of his mother to his estranged relationship with his father to the experiences that led him from vigorous debunker—to one of the most influential Christian writers. McClean is the founder of New York City-based Fellowship for Performing Arts (FPA), a theater company dedicated to producing plays with religious themes — A Man for All Seasons
“Someone suggested we do The Screwtape Letters,” recalls McClean. “I read it and didn’t think the book about a demon after the soul of an unsuspecting human on earth was theatrical literature.” But after securing the rights, the company’s subsequent production ran for nine months in New York and toured the country. “I got hooked on Lewis and we did The Great Divorce which has aspects of Lewis’ conversion in a narrative way that has led to the current production. “I realized there’s an intriguing story here and built the play.” The play is set just before the publication of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, the first of The Chronicles of Narnia series, and takes Lewis (18981963) from 9, when he lost his mother to cancer, to his terrible relationship with his father that

he regretted and to the trenches of WWI. Back at Oxford after the war, he told friends, “I never sank so low as to pray.“
McLean, who wrote The Most Reluctant Convert, said “This play is an exploration of Lewis’ dramatic conversion to Christianity—and in fact his vibrancy and resonance as a Christian apologist is rooted from this experience. “These experiences became the starting point of his debunking of Christianity,” reports McClean. “He was Christopher Hitchens with greater rhetorical gifts.” McLean has worked hard to keep a narrative drive through the piece to keep it from becoming like a college lecture, though in his day Lewis was one of the most popular professors of literature at Oxford. “There is a pedagogical bent, but it never goes there for a long period of time.“ His wit was extraordinary (see ‘LEWIS’ page 16)

The Hollywood Museum has unveiled a new lobby exhibit celebrating the friendship of actresses and movie legends Ida Lupino and Olivia de Havilland. The new exhibit showcases letters between Lupino and de Havilland who turned 103 on July 1. She sent a note from Paris that was read at the exhibit’s opening Sunday, and special guest was Mary Anderson, former personal assistant to TV and film star Lupino and author of the new book, Ida Lupino: Beyond the Camera: 100th Birthday Celebration. Lupino was the first woman to direct a film noir with The Hitch-Hiker in 1953. Throughout her 48-year career, she directed more than 100 TV
episodes in a variety of genres including westerns, supernatural tales, situation comedies, murder mysteries, and gangster stories. She was the only woman to direct episodes of the original The Twilight Zone series, as well as the only director to have starred in the show. “Ida lupino, pioneering actress turned director and producer, was one of the only female filmmakers working during the 1950s in the Hollywood studio system,” said Donelle Dadigan, owner of the Hollywood Museum at 1660 N. Highland Ave. The museum is open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., WednesdaySunday. For more information, call 323-464-7776 or visit thehollywoodmuseum.com.
Museum Of The Holocaust Exhibit Reveals Nazi Persecution Of German Soccer Team The exhibit “Venerated – Persecuted – Forgotten: Victims of Nazism at FC Bayern Munich,” highlighting littleknown stories of German soccer players and officials persecuted by Nazis, including Kurt Landauer, opens Tuesday, July 16 at the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust in Pan Pacific Park, 100 The Grove Dr. Curated by FC Bayern Erlebniswelt (Germany’s largest club museum), the exhibit, making its U.S. debut, focuses on nine players and officials who were persecuted and murdered by the Nazis because of their religion or political views. It includes the story of Jewish Club President Landauer, who was forced to resign his post and was imprisoned in Dachau. Following his exile, he returned to Munich after the war
only to find the team in shambles. Landauer led the effort to rebuild the stadium and the club. Today he is remembered as one of FC Bayern Munich’s most important figures and an important contributor to the club’s success. “Venerated – Persecuted – Forgotten: Victims of Nazism at FC Bayern Munich” tells a tale of persecution and resilience through a series of large panels with historical photographs, biographies and maps illustrating the paths taken by team members when they fled or were deported from Germany. “FC Bayern Munich is over 119 years old; and some of the values we hold dear today such as respect, responsibility and family were instilled by the players and officials featured in this exhibition,” said FC Bayern
Munich’s President of the Americas Rudolf Vidal. “Through their stories we want to educate and inspire people as well as showcase the power of soccer and how it can create positive change in communities,” he added. “We are thrilled to host FC Bayern’s fascinating exhibit in its first appearance outside of Europe,” said Beth Kean, Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust CEO. “The exhibit shows how the Nazis’ oppressive and discriminatory policies reached all aspects of society, including sports. FC Bayern has done an admirable job of bringing attention to the suffering of Jewish club members under the Nazis as well as the resilience of club leaders like Kurt Landauer.” The exhibit coincides with FC Bayern Munich’s summer
tour of the United States. The club will play English Premier League side, Arsenal FC on July 17 at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson. Admission is free to both the
museum and the exhibit. For more information, on the exhibition, running through September, visit http://lamoth.org/exhibitions/te mporary-exhibits/bayern.

Film Academy Invites 842 New Members The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Monday that membership invitations have been extended to 842 actors, directors, producers and others in the film industry, with women making up half of that number and people of color accounting for 29 percent of the invitees. Women and people of color made up 25% and 8%, respectively, of the Academy's membership in 2015. If the 2019 invitees accept the membership invitations, which are rarely turned down, the number of non-white members will have doubled to 16% in four years. The film academy has been working
to broaden its membership since coming under intense criticism in 2016 due to the lack of racial diversity that year among many of the top Oscar nominees, which triggered the #OscarsSoWhite social media campaign. In the Actors Branch, invitees include Oscar winner Lady Gaga ("A Star is Borwn") and Oscar nominees Marina de Tavira ("Roma") and Giancarlo Giannini ("Seven Beauties"), along with Jamie Bell, Gemma Chan, Rosalind Chao, Claire Foy, Sterling K. Brown, Gemma Jones, Alexander Skarsgard, Damien Lewis, Amanda Peet and Kevin Pollak. –– City News Service

Temple Emanuel Youth Center Building Sold To Miami-Based Crescent Heights By Matt Lopez Temple Emanuel of Beverly Hills, the longstanding Jewish institution, sold one of its buildings, according to a report in The Real Deal. The Temple Emanuel building – which was most recently used as a school hall and youth center – was sold for $27.4 million to Crescent Heights, a Miami-based real estate developer. Temple Emanuel Executive Director Matt Davidson confirmed the sale to the Courier. Davidson said Temple Emanuel sold “one of our under-utilized ancillary buildings,” but said the temple is under a non-disclosure agreement, so could not confirm any details. “Temple Emanuel will continue to thrive and serve the Beverly Hills and Los Angeles Jewish community for decades to come,” Davidson said. The Temple Emanuel building, located at 8844 Burton Way, was originally designed by master architect
Sidney Eisenshtat and was constructed as a school and youth center in the late modern style. The original temple is located a block south, at 300 N. BH SPORTING –Over Memorial Day weekend, team BH Sporting — the AYSO Beverly Hills B2007 Extra team — traveled down to San Diego and convincingly won the B12U Division’s top flight at Mira Mesa’s Top Gun Soccer Tournament. The weekend started strong with victories over Pacific Palisades (2-1) and Mira Mesa (4-2), followed by a 3-3 tie against Lakewood. But when pitted against that same Lakewood squad in the finals, the Beverly Hills team made the needed adjustments and stormed to a 5-1 victory. The following weekend, the team traveled to Glendale and took home top honors in the B12U Division at the Leo Nedeff Memorial Tournament. In the Finals, BH Sporting trailed a rugged Temple City squad 3-2 heading into the final frame. But the Beverly Hills team scored two late goals, including the winning tally as time expired to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. BH Sporting boasts an international squad of players from Italy, France, Mexico, Central America and Eastern Europe. It isn’t rare to hear Italian, French, Spanish and Russian being spoken along the sidelines. All told, the team played and total of seven tournaments this season and finished either first or second in all seven of them. An investigation was underway Tuesday to determine what caused the death of 27-year-old Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs, who was found dead in a hotel room in Southlake, Texas, with police suspecting neither foul play nor suicide. Several Angels players and a few broadcasters were on a bus about to leave the Hilton hotel in Southlake for Globe Life Park Monday afternoon when news came that Skaggs had been found dead in his hotel room about 40 minutes earlier, hours before the opener of a four-game series with the Texas Rangers. "Words cannot express the deep sadness we feel right now," Angels all-star outfielder Mike Trout tweeted. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Carli (Skaggs' wife) and their families. Remembering him as a great teammate, friend, and person who will forever remain in our hearts... we love you, 45." Monday night's game was postponed until August. Grief counselors were made available to team personnel. Skaggs was a native of Woodland Hills and a graduate of Santa Monica High School. He and his wife Carli were married in December. They had no children. The Southlake police department issued a statement Monday. "This afternoon at 2:18 p.m. the Southlake Police Department responded to a call of an unconscious male in a room in the Hilton Hotel. Officers arrived and found the male unresponsive and he was pronounced deceased at the scene." The statement said that "at this time, no foul play is
suspected and the investigation is ongoing." A police department spokesperson quoted by The Times added that "suicide is not suspected." Skaggs was one of the most popular players in the clubhouse and one of the Angels' most reliable pitchers this season, going 7-7 with a 4.29 ERA in 79 2/3 innings across 15 starts. He was 28-38 with a 4.41 ERA during a seven- year career that was interrupted by Tommy John surgery in 2014 and several other injuries. Skaggs' death is one of several tragedies the Angels have dealt with over the years. It comes 10 years after 22-yearold pitcher Nick Adenhart and two friends were killed by a drunken driver April 9, 2009, only hours after Adenhart threw the best game of his career. In the 1970s, infielders Chico Ruiz and Mike Miley and pitcher Bruce Heinbechner were killed in separate auto accidents, pitcher Minnie Rojas was paralyzed in a car crash and outfielder Lyman Bostock was killed in a drive-by shooting while riding in a car with friends in Gary, Indiana. ––– CNS

300 million books,” reports McLean. “And he’s on track to sell more this year than last year. That doesn’t happen to a dead author—especially one whose main work is an articulation of Christianity.” McLean has found in the talkbacks he conducts after every show that he gets questions from atheists. “They want
to know the intellectual steps that led a vigorous debunker to become a believer. “Audiences like the depth of it and appreciate the chance to follow sustained, rational, articulate argument,” says McLean who wrote the piece from Lewis’ autobiography Surprised by Joy, letter and the myriad books written on the author. The conversion storyline begins with a religious upbringing that Lewis only undertook to win his father’s approval. Much of the play covers his argument for the “naturalist atheism” he found attractive, says McLean. “The horror of the Christian universe is that there’s no door marked ‘exit,’“ Lewis said. Lewis’ disbelief turned into a form of atheism called “materialism,” the notion that the universe had no prime mover; it’s all just atoms bouncing around in space. Over time, Lewis came to believe that naturalistic atheism

originating out of unexplainable laws of physics and biochemistry could not account for logic and reason—leading to the conclusion that moral and aesthetic judgements are valid and meaningful. This led first to a philosophical theism and then eventually into believing that “God is God.” In Lewis’ case this bordered on Judaism: “My religion was like that of the Jews.” Says MacLean, “FPA’s conviction is that art and theatre provides an opportunity to engage authentically with the notion of God and supernatural realm within an imaginative context. Colorado Senator Discusses Variety of Issues at Skirball Town Hall Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet answered questions Sunday at his first town hall in California since declaring his candidacy for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination on topics ranging from his Medicare-X public option health care plan to his proposal to tackle climate change. Bennet also told the capacity crowd of 500 at the Skirball Cultural Center in Brentwood about his call to prohibit members of Congress from ever becoming lobbyists and ban partisan gerrymandering. Bennet has released a plan
to deal with climate change based on reducing emissions while increasing job opportunities; conserving resources to improve economic opportunities for farmers, ranchers, and foresters; and investing in infrastructure, innovation and science domestically and globally. Bennet said writing The Land of Flickering Lights: Restoring America in an Age of Broken Politics, which was released June 4, convinced him "that if we keep going down this path, we're going to be the first generation of Americans to

Other cities throughout the country are also faced with overreaching state governments under the influence of special interests and we all are concerned about federal assaults on local governments,” Mirisch told the Courier. “The message is clear: more, not fewer decisions should be made closer to home.” The four-day meeting, which marked the 87th annual U.S. Conference of Mayors, was held at the Hilton Hawaiian Village and was themed "Infrastructure. The resolution reads: “The United States Conference of Mayors calls on the executive and legislative branches of federal and state governments to respect local control and authority and work collaboratively with municipalities and national associations representing local governments as they develop and implement policies that impact the ability of cities to perform daily operations and/or raise and obligate local generated fees and revenues.” “I’m very pleased that the

leave less opportunity, not more, for the next generation. I just need to do everything I can do to make sure that we don't do that." Bennet has pledged that if elected president he would take immediate steps to increase wages, lower the costs of a middle-class life and deliver a quality education for every American. He has said he will overhaul and expand the Child Tax Credit, expand the Earned Income Tax Credit, enact paid family and medical leave and raise the minimum wage. –– CNS
Emmy-winning comic actor Arte Johnson, who generated belly laughs -- often from fellow cast members on camera -- while portraying various off-beat characters on the slapstick variety show Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In, died Wednesday at age 90. His family told The Hollywood Reporter that Johnson died at Cedars- Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles of heart failure, following a three-year battle with bladder and prostate cancer. Publicist Harlan Boll said no formal funeral services are planned. Instead, his ashes will be flown to Hawaii, "his home away from home," where a private ceremony will be held. Johnson began his career on stage in New York before making the move to television in the mid-1950s, appearing on programs such as The Danny Thomas Show, It's Always Jan, Sally, The Twilight Zone and The Andy Griffith Show over the ensuing decade. He also sprinkled in a handful of film appearances. But he got his big break in the late 1960s when he landed in the cast of Laugh-In, a campy collection of slapstick comedy bits. Johnson portrayed dozens of characters on the show -- a German soldier peering through some bushes and uttering, "Verrrrrry interesting"; an old man on a park bench regularly propositioning Ruth Buzzi, who would respond by walloping him with her purse; and a raincoatwearing man unable to keep his tricycle upright. "Thank you for a wonder
ful half-century of friendship," Buzzi wrote on her Twitter page Wednesday. "I could not have shared the spotlight with a nicer guy. Rest in peace. And yes, Arte Johnson, I believe in the hereafter." Johnson won an Emmy Award for his work on the show in 1969. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Johnson left the show after four seasons, saying it was too work-intensive and left him little time to do anything else. He continued working regularly, appearing on shows including Love, American Style, The Partridge Family, Kojak, Fantasy Island, The Love Boat and Murder, She Wrote. He was also prolific in the voice-over world, lending his voice to animated shows such as DuckTales, The Smurfs, The Flintstone Kids, Snorks and Animaniacs. He is survived by his wife, Gisela, and a brother. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Actors & Others for Animals, Best Friends and/or to cancer research programs, Boll said. –– CNS

Some 1,200 people descended upon the Beverly Hills estate of Lisa and Josh Greer to attend the 4th annual “Rock for Research.” The festival-style concert and foodie paradise featured headliner Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Meghan Trainor, and a performance by the celebrity-laden Band from TV, comprised of such names as Scott Grimes; James Denton; Adrian Pasdar, Sarah Wayne Callies, and Bob Guiney. The event was sponsored by the Cedars-Sinai Board of Governors and raised some $600,000 in funds for its new Innovation Center for its mission to develop novel treatment strategies through comprehensive molecular profiling of diseases using leading-edge biomedical technologies. The center's investigators will focus on prevention as well as the development of less toxic, yet more effective, new drugs for cancer, diabetes, and diseases of the heart, lung and brain, as well as high-risk pregnancy and many others. Some of the popular area restaurants who participated in providing the food included The Grill on the Alley, Craigs, Il Pastaio, Gracias Madre, Border Grill, BOA, Public School, Sweet Lady Jane and Susie Cakes.

Frances Allen’s Desert Roundup Sixty years ago, “The Day the Music Died,” the theme of songwriter/singer Don McLean’s iconic tribute American Pie was created. Fortunately, music has evolved; one day after the Agua Caliente of Cahuilla Indians unveiled plans to construct a 300,000-square-foot sports and entertainment arena on 16 acres of tribal land in the heart of downtown Palm Springs. The cost of the project will be borne exclusively by the tribe and its partner, the Oak View Group (OVG). The cost of the arena, training center and hockey team (more about this later), is set at $250 million, and will fund the approximately 10,000-seat venue. Groundbreaking and construction are expected to begin next February with completion set for the fall of 2021. But the creation of the Palm Springs venue brings with it some collateral features. The valley already has worldrenowned musical talent in Indio with two weeks of Coachella followed by a week of Stagecoach featuring country music. To cement its place in the Desert, The Palm Springs arena reports it had entered into an agreement with Live Nation Entertainment to help fill the seats. Live Nation is a global event producer and has exclusive recording and merchandising deals with acts like U2, JayZ and Madonna. The company also manages more than 300 artists and has put on events in 40 countries. Snowbirds will also have a unique venue. The NHL Seattle minor team and OVG have submitted an application for a minor league NHL team, which if approved, would play in the arena. Things have gone full circle. Music has changed, but you can still see and hear Don McLean.

An Op-Ed From Victor Bardack
THE FUTURE OF LOTS 12 & 13 Beverly Hills is considering a deal with the developers for lots 12 & 13. Simply put, the owners of the property–which is now zoned for transportation, would donate lot 13 to the City – in exchange for a zoning change so they could build office buildings and retail on lot 12. These are the same developers who rushed to cut down the mature, native trees on that property years ago. They want to build on the long strip adjacent to the Civic Center all the way down to Beverly Boulevard, which will result in more concrete and stone plus traffic on already heavily traveled Santa Monica Boulevard. More dense construction might be great for developers – but certainly not good for residents or the many who work in or visit our City. (1) The traffic count on Santa Monica Boulevard (May 2019) is 76,300 cars and trucks per 24 hours. (2) During busy hours – the lower speeds increase the amount of air borne pollution to residents and workers. (3) What we really need are trees to reduce the effects of that pollution. One mature tree can absorb 48 pounds of air borne particles and gaseous pollutants per year. We don’t need more concrete and steel that would add more toxic pollution, congestion and vehicular traffic in an already grossly impacted area. But there are solutions: (A) The most obvious one is having the City purchase lots 12 & 13. It is really an investment in our City and the health of its residents and visitors. (B) The developers, Lyn Konheim & Stanley Black et al. can choose to donate the property to
the City. For high net worth individuals this could make smart, economic sense as they would get a significant tax deduction. The normal limit is 60% of a taxpayer’s adjusted gross income – but any excess can be carried over, giving them deductions for several years. For example: if they value the land at $10 million, they would get to write off $6 million! Beverly Hills is a destination City as people come from all over the world. They visit for shopping, take pictures in our parks, and walk and drive our beautiful tree lined streets. They don’t come here to see more congested, boxy, office buildings. We have a wonderful opportunity to save green space, create parkland, and reduce pollution. We could even dedicate this new tree-lined park to the donors of the land, giving them an enduring and respected legacy. More office buildings are self-serving, but isn’t it time we did something for the environment, for our fellow citizens, for our workers and visitors? As Joni Mitchell’s song lyrics once said: “They paved paradise and put up a parking lot. Doesn’t it always seem to go that you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone. They paved paradise and put up a parking lot.” Don’t let this precious area, lots 12 and 13, disappear into a sea of concrete, steel and asphalt. It is ours to protect—and to protect now--for ourselves, for our children, and for future generations. A park on lots 12 & 13 is a wise investment for Beverly Hills and for all our citizens. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR I commend the Beverly Hills Police Department for doing its job....thank them for keeping us safe....and congratulate them for their failing grade from Campaign Zero. Christine Skirmutt Ford ****** Next month marks the 50th anniversary of the Woodstock concert in 1969, the all-time most celebrated and iconic of outdoor rock festivals. Today’s Coachella tribal ritual takes it cue from that summer of ‘69 when Santana, Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane and Creedence Clearwater Revival we’re amongst the bands that brought the 60’s rock era to a rousing finale. Beverly Hills will have it’s own Woodstock tribute as a talented band and singers from Stephen Wise Temple will take the stage on Thursday, Aug. 15 (the day Woodstock actually
began its three day run) at Canon Gardens and under the direction of Cantor Nathan Lam and bandleader David Kates will offer some of Woodstock’s neat remembered tunes. Rabbi Yoshi Zweiback will sing and play guita. If you don’t think this guy can rock it out, see Yoshi with Wise band on YouTube doing Am Yisrael Chai which tells the story of Purim with an 80s rock groove. On Friday night ,Aug. 16, Stephen Wise Temple itself will host a special Woodstock themed Shabbat service, taking place outdoors on its lawn with everyone invited to attend. Don’t forget to bring your love beads, Nehru jackets and peace symbol necklaces. (Beverly Hills residents should note the peace symbol and Mercedes logo are not the same thing.) Hal Lifson

Astrology
By Holiday Mathis TODAY'S BIRTHDAY (July 5). Tender loving care is an exchange that must be cultivated. You'll be brilliant at it this sort of give and take and will be rewarded with what can only occur with the pure joy that comes of people learning each other over time. A professional accolade in October will be followed by an opportunity to pivot toward your dreams. Virgo and Scorpio adore you. CANCER (June 22-July 22). There's nothing telling you what you must decide. It's entirely up to you. But don't let that paralyze you. There are lots of ways to get it right. This isn't a case of getting it right. It's a case of recognizing what it is you most want to learn. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Though you don't mean to deceive anyone, and no one means to deceive you, there are dynamics in play that could call for a heightened version of personality. Pretending isn't just for children. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). If you are in a competitive mood, it starts with knowing you can beat someone else and then realizing the thing to beat is the status quo, or your own personal best. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). The clandestine arrangement is the thing of Shakespearean comedy and tragedy alike. It's the infrastructure of surprise parties and coups. Secrets have power not to be taken lightly. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Getting comfortable around different types of people will be the challenge of the day. Only the most confident and classy take this on, as the easier thing is to avoid those who are different. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). The social lessons learned at an early age still apply. You can do it one of two ways. Either figure out who likes you and, if it's mutual, hang around that person. Or, you can figure out who you like first, which is the best way. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). There are easy things to interpret (most television and movies, typical design concepts, familiar faces) and then there are harder things (books, poetry, fine art and complicated people). All are completely worth it! AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). You prefer to bring the big picture into being through a certain mental evenness. This requires that you break large tasks down into small ones and then plot them out with a reasonable schedule over time. PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar. 20). Some of the three scariest words in the English language are, "Can we talk?" While it's fine to let loved ones know how you feel, today it's also safe to assume that your actions have told them already and will continue to do so. ARIES (Mar. 21-Apr. 19). You're careful not to make things about you that shouldn't be. Sometimes, even things that are given, said and done directly to you are actually not about you. Wisdom helps you separate your role from your true self. TAURUS (Apr. 20-May 20). It's like your life is perfectly sized for certain manner of living and then when one thing changes -- a visit, travel, an event -- the basics of self-care go out the window. It's better when exercise and time to yourself is a higher priority. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Being satisfied doesn't always come naturally. Some find it easier than others. To get satisfied when you're not requires that you notice and allow yourself to be influenced by an entirely different set of factors.
