NBC’s This is Us broke an extended drought among broadcast networks by earning a nomination in the outstanding drama series category. It's the first time a broadcast network program has been nominated in the category since CBS' The Good Wife in

2011.

Also nominated for outstanding drama series were AMC's Better Call Saul, Netflix's The Crown, Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale, Netflix’s House Of Cards, Netflix’s Stranger Things and Westworld.

With landlords comprising the bulk of the audience, 21 supported performance-based rent increases based on habitability standards while 27 voted to separate small (2-6 units) from larger landlords.

Beverly Hills School District Continues Fight Against Metro Today

By Laura Coleman Nearly a year after U.S. District Court Judge George H. Wu made his final ruling on Beverly Hills Unified School District v. Federal Transit Administration., et. al., representatives from both sides are expected to return to court this morning before the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in Pasadena.

This morning’s hearing before a panel of three judges marks the latest effort by BHUSD to derail a plan by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) to run a subway tunnel under Beverly Hills High School.

“The current alignment

goes through the heart of the Beverly Hills High School campus creating safety uncertainties and directly impacting our modernization and future development,” said BHUSD Superintendent Michael Bregy.

“There are alternative feasible alignment options available and we have a very reasonable compromise proposal we would like to share.”

Although Judge Wu refused to vacate the Record of Decision when he made his ruling final in August 2016, which would have ultimately compelled Metro to reconsider its decision to tunnel under BHHS, he did rule that the Federal Transit Administration (see ‘METRO SUBWAY’ page 9)

By Victoria Talbot Renters made a poor showing at the second scheduled rent stabilization workshop Wednesday, being outnumbered by landlords about 2:1 in a crucial discussion on rent increases.

The low turnout led to a lopsided discussion that favored landlords, who repeatedly claimed they needed seven to eight percent rent increases.

Renters present at the meeting decried such an annual increase, and supported the current three percent cap.

The City of Beverly Hills has prepared a Final Environmental Impact Report (Final EIR) to analyze potential environmental impacts associated with development of the project. Specifically, the Final EIR analyzes the following potential environmental effects of the project: • Cultural and Tribal Resources

The Planning Commission will consider the Final EIR, and may adopt a resolution certifying the Final EIR, adopting a Mitigation Monitoring and Reporting Program, and adopting a Statement of Overriding Considerations. SUMMER READING — The Summer Reading Club is a program offered by the Beverly Hills Public Library to encourage children to continue reading over the summer when vacations and activities are abundant. Beverly Hills Police Arrest Two After Pair Of Vehicle Pursuits

By Matt Lopez Beverly Hills police arrested a man and woman late Tuesday after they led police on two short vehicle pursuits through Beverly Hills.

The chase began when BHPD officers spotted – but then quickly lost sight of – a stolen Lexus around 12:34 a.m. in the area of Sunset Boulevard and Rexford Drive.

"We believe they went up in the hills," BHPD Lt. Scott Dowling said.

Police kept an eye out for the vehicle, and saw it again

shortly thereafter at about 1 a.m., just two blocks away from the initial sighting.

Another short pursuit began and ended in the area of Sunset Boulevard and Copley Drive where the suspects abandoned the vehicle.

One suspect was taken into custody from the vehicle, and the other was found hiding about a block away.

Arrested were Crystal Craddock, 35 of South Gate and Troy Walls, 50, of Playa del Rey.

Each performance is a duet involving those who act and those who watch, explained choreographer and director Daniel Ezralow, whose twonight residency at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts began last night just before press time.

“The experience of watching dance is like neuron-mirroring,” explained the awardwinning choreographer.

Board Of Education Pledges To Sink Teeth Into New Food Options For Beverly Hills Students

By Laura Coleman The Board of Education’s decision on Tuesday to replace the district’s Food Service Point of Sale (POS) system offered a glimpse into some of the challenges facing the Beverly Hills Unified School District’s efforts to provide school lunches.

Following board newcomer Isabel Hacker’s criticism that the cafeteria food is “horrible,” further bolstered by Board President Mel Spitz’s observation that when he was first on the board in the 1970’s, school lunches were “the talk of the town,” the board pledged to beef-up their food service program.

And while there are in fact several proponents for the school district’s food, which includes both a burrito bar and

pasta bar at the high school for example, there is also the sustaining concern that the school district is failing to economically feed students that qualify for free and reduced lunches.

“Your goal is always to try to make a profit,” explained Chief Administrative Officer La Tanya Kirk-Carter Latham. “The majority of school districts in the state run at a profit or at no impact to the general fund.

That’s not true here.”

When Latham originally worked at the district as a consultant in 2009, she said that the schools’ meal program was siphoning $800,000 from the district’s general fund annually.

With around just five percent of Beverly Hills students qualifying for free and reduced meals, Latham said that

accepting Federal funds (which are given on a per qualifying student basis) appears to come with too many strings to make it economically attractive. She said that last year BHUSD spent approximately $200,000 from the general fund on food service, a four-fold increase over the 2015-16 school-year low of just a $50,000 dip into the general fund.

Several years ago, the district briefly contracted with Chartwells Schools Dining Services as a vendor, effectively taking itself out of directly feeding students. Latham said BHUSD will likely consider once again using an outside vendor in an attempt to stop operating its food service program in the red.

By Matt Lopez Five Beverly Hills hotels earned a spot on Travel + Leisure’s top 10 hotels in Greater Los Angeles, but it was one just outside of the City – the Hotel BelAir – that topped the list.

Hotel Bel-Air named the Best Hotel in Greater Los Angeles in the Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards 2017 readers survey.

Hotel Bel-Air, which opened in 1946, boasts 103 rooms – 45 of which are suites, and is built in an old Hollywood style.

Camden Dr. The choir donates its time and talents to concerts organized on behalf of humanitarian associations throughout the world as well as singing for liturgies at St. Nicholas Cathedral as part of the Monaco Cathedral Choir.

Directed by Pierre Debat, the choir was founded in 1974 by Prince Rainier III and includes 24 boys between 9-and-16 years old.

By Laura Coleman Former City Property Manager Brenda Lavender is set to be arraigned Sept. 5 in the Criminal Courts Building in downtown L.A. following her arrest on Monday.

The Beverly Hills Police Department had been investigating Lavender since December 2015 after the City discovered a possible embezzlement involving Lavender and subsequently terminated her employment.

“The City does not tolerate this type of conduct,” Mayor Lili Bosse told the Courier. “When we discovered it, we immediately reported it to BHPD, which did an excellent job of putting together the case for the district attorney to prosecute.”

Following BHPD’s investigation, Lavender was arrested Monday for two felony offenses, including allegedly failing to collect more than $800,000 from a City tenant over a period of three years. Bail was set at $50,000.

At the time of the crime, Lavender’s job responsibilities included the oversight and collection of monthly lease payments from City-owned properties.

From 2012 to 2015, Lavender allegedly failed to collect obligated lease payments from one of the tenants leasing a City-owned property, and intentionally failed to report to the City that this particular tenant was in arrears for these lease payments.

The aggregate uncollected lease payments over the three-year period exceed $800,000. Failure to collect lease payments is a felony violation of California Penal Code §424(a) – Misappropriation of Public Funds.

In addition to failing to collect lease payments, BHPD determined that Lavender allegedly provided false information on her 2015 Statements of Economic Interests Form 700, when she failed to report a $15,000 loan she received from another tenant during the course of her employment.

Failure to report a loan on the Form 700 is a felony violation of California Penal Code §118(a) – Perjury by Declaration.

According to a release sent out by the City, the investigation into the crimes pointed to a need for the property management operation to be reorganized in order to create the appropriate oversight and accountability.

As a result, the City has split the property management function among three City departments: Administrative Services collects and monitors rent payments; Policy and Management oversees property leasing; and Public Works manages tenant relations.

In addition, the City will be hiring an internal auditor to monitor all City operations.

Wanda Unloads Dozens Of Hotels, Other Properties In $9.3 Billion Sale

By Matt Lopez Wang Jianlin talked a big game a year ago when his Dalian Wanda Group rode into town and began snatching up properties in Hollywood and Beverly Hills.

In fact, back home in Beijing, Wanda’s chairman touted that his Wanda-backed theme parks were like a “pack of wolves” compared to Disney’s measly “tiger” of a resort in Shanghai.

Now, it appears Wanda is taking a major step back on its expansion plans.

The Chinese conglomerate announced this week that it will sell dozens of hotels and other projects to developer Sunac China Holdings for $9.3 billion to slash debt, two weeks after acknowledging it was being probed following heavy overseas investments.

Wang told financial magazine Caixin the deal would cause debt at Wanda's commercial property arm to "drop greatly,” without giving specifics.

Some, however, aren’t so sure how true that is. Variety speculated this week that “there has long been suggestion that Wanda’s debt levels are enormous.”

In addition to its plans to open its

controversial One Beverly Hills development at 9900 Wilshire Blvd., Wang’s Wanda Group had in the last few years, purchased the AMC Theaters chain and Legendary Entertainment.

Wanda has also made plans for 13 theme parks across China to battle Disney.

Beijing began last year to roll out restrictions to curb overseas capital flight, which analysts said raises funding costs for companies like Wanda because lending to them is now viewed as more risky.

The deal indicates that "Wanda is running out of options to raise funds through normal financing channels," said Ivan Han, Shanghai-based analyst with financial information provider Morning Whistle.

“Financial institutions don't really want to keep lending money to firms that are targeted by regulatory scrutiny.”

Monday’s announcement marks the latest aggressive move by fastgrowing Sunac, which is run by billionaire Sun Hongbin and since last year has purchased dozens of property projects across China.

West L.A. Planning Commission Denies 944 Airole Way Appeal For Third Kitchen

By Matt Lopez Bel-Air development activists won a major victory last week when the West Los Angeles Planning Commission denied an appeal for a third kitchen in developer Nile Niami’s 944 Airole Way project.

The 96,000 square-foot structure – affectionately named the “party house” by many in the community – has drawn the ire of Bel-Air locals because of the fact that, despite its permit as a “single-family dwelling,” the structure is built more like an entertainment complex, including five swimming pools and a casino.

The proposed third kitchen would have just been another thorn in the side of those who have opposed the massive nature of the project.

In response to projects like 944 Airole Way, the Bel-Air Association

worked closely with L.A. Councilmember Paul Koretz and his senior planning deputy Faisal Alaserri to pass the Bel-Air Overlay, which requires site plan reviews for all homes that measure more than 17,500 square feet. That review is meant to ensure that the projects that are supposed to be single-family dwellings stay that way, rather than morphing into commercial-sized event facilities.

Alserri said Koretz has co-introduced a motion with fellow councilman David Ryu to take a closer look at party houses.

"There is a difference between a ‘house' that is hosting an event verses a ‘structure' that is built to accommodate events. We do not want to encourage the building of structures for events.”

Fourteen Charged In Local Healthcare Fraud Cases In Nationwide Crackdown Fourteen people were charged in federal court in Southern California as part of a nationwide health-care fraud crackdown targeting more than 400 defendants across the country, including 120 allegedly involved in prescribing and distributing opioids and other dangerous drugs, authorities announced Thursday.

Federal prosecutors described the takedown as the largest health-care fraud operation ever undertaken, with the defendants collective accused

of false billings totaling about $1.3 billion.

In the local cases, 14 people – including doctors – were charged for allegedly scheming to defraud health insurance programs including Medicare.

Prosecutors said the defendants took part in fraud and kickback schemes involving not just narcotics, but also services such as physical therapy, acupuncture, sleep studies and hospice care.

"Health care fraud schemes such as these threaten

the vital trust between a patient and his or her health care provider, undermine the integrity of our health care system and cost all Americans billions of dollars," Acting U.S. Attorney Sandra Brown said.

“Today's announcement serves as a clear warning that we will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to identify and hold accountable health care professionals who commit these crimes.”

State officials Thursday released preliminary maps outlining the locations of earthquake fault lines on the Westside and other parts of the Los Angeles area which could have a major impact on future development projects.

The maps from the California Geological Survey show a fault line cutting through neighborhoods in Beverly Hills, Santa Monica and other Westside neighborhoods and were made under the Alquist-Priolo Earthquake Act. The general location of the fault lines have been known for years, but once finalized, the maps could prevent some future development projects, as the AP Act prohibits con-

struction of certain structures for human occupancy on top of an active fault line.

Although the maps would not completely prevent structures from being built on fault lines, they do require developers working near a one to conduct a seismic review, and the ultimate approval of a project on a fault line lies with local authorities.

The maps, which will now undergo a 90-day review, show the Santa Monica Fault line cutting through Pacific Palisades, Santa Monica, Brentwood, Century City, Westwood and West Los Angeles.

Krutonog, a rising sophomore at Harvard-Westlake and a 2017 USA National Cadet Team player, made 58 saves in six games and was named AllTournament Goalie MVP. Swimmer Michael Phelps and gymnast Simone Biles both won two awards Wednesday at the 25th annual ESPY Awards in downtown Los Angeles.

Phelps won for best record-breaking performance for extending his own records for most Olympic gold medals and medals won and as best U.S. male Olympic athlete.

Biles won the best U.S. Olympic athlete and best female athlete awards.

The New England Patriots were nominated for five awards, but won just one for best game for their come-frombehind Super Bowl victory over the Atlanta Falcons.

Two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback Peyton Manning hosted the ceremony at the Microsoft Theater.

Retired Dodger broadcaster Vin Scully was presented with the Icon Award, which honors people who "have left a lasting impression on the sports world." Scully, who retired at the end of last season after 67 years behind the mic with the Dodgers, was presented the award by actor Bryan Cranston.

Scully thanked Cranston for flying from New York City for the day to present the award to him.

"I don't have a relative in the world who make that kind of a trip," Scully said.

After recounting the story of when he first fell in love with baseball on Oct. 2, 1936, when walked by a window and saw the score of Game 2 of the 1936 World Series, Scully said "God gave us memories so we could have roses in December.

An invitation to do a show about the beloved composer in Russia made him think, “this is something I should look into.” The result is Our Great Tchaikovsky, playing July 19-Aug. 6 at The Wallis.

Admitting that he didn’t know much about the composer whose music he’d been exposed to much of his life, Felder says he learned “entertaining and shocking things” about the composer, mostly from his letters, in two years of research.

Along with the composer, Felder also plays his parents, nephew, brothers and even speaks to the audience as himself in telling the story of the composer, living in Czarist Russia who struggled with his sexuality and died mysteriously.

Known for his ballets Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake and The Nutcracker, symphonic works, piano concerti (which Felder had studied), overtures, operas and chamber music, a healthy 53-yearold Tchaikovsky conducted the premiere of his Symphony No. 6, Pathétique and, was dead nine days later. To this day, how and why he died is still a mystery.

Troubled by things going on around him and his frustrations, Tchaikovsky poured those emotions into his music, Felder says. “He was one of those composers who made it clear that what he felt and what he was going through in life influenced his music.”

Unwilling to reveal too much of the story, Felder considers this his most political composer portrait, and one particularly timely and relevant. “It deals with issues like Russia’s anti-gay movement that would have effected Tchaikovsky.”

Felder also touches on how the composer was treated in his day. “The Europeans considered him too Russian

and the Russians considered him too European.”

One of the joys of this particular show “is playing music that is beyond remarkable,” Felder says. It took him a year to master the Romeo And Juliet and 1812 Overtures; but there was also a lot of time, he says, whittling down selections that perfectly fit the plot points.

Felder is just back from a five-week run of his Beethoven show in the Bay Area. Switching back and forth between composers in shows is not difficult, Felder says, “it just takes discipline. You have to know the voice and physicality of the person. It’s a matter of constantly rehearsing, having the character in your bones and being prepared.”

Hollywood Roundup: Filming In Los Angeles Dips In June; MLB All-Star Game Draws Second-Lowest TV Ratings On-location film production in Greater Los Angeles slipped 4.7-percent between April and June, according to a report released Thursday by FilmL.A., the nonprofit film office for the city and county of Los Angeles.

"Declines in any category need to be put in context: The year-to-date comparison for the last seven years shows 2017 is second only to 2016 for total shoot days," said FilmL.A. President Paul Audley, adding that 2016 was the best year on record for on-location production.

Local on-location film production dropped 18.5-percent, TV comedy dropped 9-percent, digital web-based TV dropped 21.8-percent, TV reality production dropped 1-percent, TV pilots dropped 60.4-percent, and TV drama dropped 24.3-percent while commercial production saw a 12.5-percent increase.

FilmL.A. said the drop in TV pilots mirrors the results of its forthcoming 2017 Pilot Study, which found that fewer pilots were ordered by networks over the last year.

The drop in TV drama production

was partly attributable to some shows being canceled or not in production that were being produced in the second quarter of 2016, including Gilmore Girls, Good Girls Revolt, Hand Of God, Mistresses, Roadies, Sweet/Vicious and The Catch.

Fox's telecast of the American League's 2-1 10-inning victory over the National League Tuesday in Miami averaged 9.28 million viewers, ahead of only the 8.71-million average for the 2016 game, which was played in San Diego.

America's Got Talent, which ran on NBC opposite the first one hour and 44 minutes of Fox's All-Star Game coverage in most of the nation, was Tuesday's most-watched prime-time program, averaging 12.594 million viewers.

Lady MacBeth–A Gruesome, Yet Brilliant Subversion Of A Classic Tale As most of my review followers, The Bagel Brigade – or, review follower as the case may be – you know that I decry the depiction of unnecessary violence and blatantly gratuitous sex. Lady Macbeth, adapted from a 19th Century Russian author, Nikolai Leskov, by screenwriter Alice Birch, has all that I cringe at.

In these times of sexual deviates, cold-blooded murderers, child molesters and killers, etc., with every scurrilous account of the dastardly deed printed on the front pages of super-market tabloids and many other publications, we don’t need films reminding us of society’s failures. (Incidentally, our jails are full of convicted felons who committed crimes after being turned on by movie and newspaper story lines.)

But back to Lady Macbeth – a film that is beautifully photographed, expertly directed and with highly effective acting, especially by the “Lady” herself, Florence Pugh.

The movie is about the

wrath of a woman scorned and the fury she eventually unleashes. Her victims are her loutish husband and an evil, unflappable father-in-law. There’s even an innocent beautiful horse that falls victim to her once repressive anger.

However, the story line goes a bit too far when enacting

Astoria, which took place Wednesday at the Wadorf Astoria Beverly Hills.

As the birthplace of many iconic dishes and drinks, such as eggs benedict, red velvet cake, the Sazerac cocktail and the eponymous Waldorf salad, the Waldorf Astoria brand is no stranger to inventive fare. At this year’s competition, chefs from Waldorf Astoria hotels in Park City, Ras al Khaimah, Grand Wailea, Boca

Raton and Trianon Palace Versailles offered attendees and judges expertly crafted bites, mocktails and cocktails with the winning team’s dishes promised a place on the menus at all Waldorf Astoria properties for one year.

Judged on taste, technique, presentation and how well the food paired with the drinks, Wednesday’s decadent “fifth hour” tasting marked the culmination of a seven-

month collaboration with the James Beard Foundation. While the competition was stiff, such as the flawless scallops with caviar presented by the team at Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah, ultimately the team at Waldorf Astoria Park City, helmed by chefs Michael Zachman and Alex Bois, prevailed with bites of beetcured trout set atop blinis and crispy Togarashi prawn lollipops.

After sweltering through a month with four days of record-breaking temperatures in excess of 120 degrees, and with the forecast of more on the way, Desert residents and tourists cast a wishful eye at the nearby San Jacinto Mountains and their promise of providing a 40-degree drop in the thermometer.

However, for more than two decades, the sizzling grip of summer heat has been broken by Idyllwild Arts, which has presented a weekend music festival known as “Jazz in the Pines.”

This year’s 24th edition will be held Aug. 11 to 13 at the scenic mountain campus of Idyllwild Arts, featuring the Charles McPherson Quintet, the Grand Band, Singularity Project, Forbits and Seahawk Mojo.

Since 1993, music lovers of all ages have flocked to the scenic Iocale to attend Southern California’s premier boutique music fest in the heart of the San Jacinto Mountains, a three-hour drive from Los Angeles. They come to enjoy the fresh air, breathtaking views, good food and great music.

“Jazz in the Pines” is hosted and organized by Idyllwild Arts, a boarding arts high school and summer program that has been changing lives through the transformative power of art. Set on moree than 200 acres, Idyllwild Arts is a unique educational institution with a focus in all art forms for all artists regardless of age or skill kevel. It is also the first independent high school arts in the West.

All proceeds benefit the nonprofit Idyllwild Arts, with its 300 students, half of whom from more than than 30 countries.

The discussions are being held to fine tune the Rent Stabilization Ordinance, which began as an Urgency Ordinance in January that ended the 10 percent rent increases, no-cause evictions without relocation fees, and began the process of starting a rental registry for the City to set a baseline for its rental housing stock.

Singh effectively kept the peace amidst highly emotional discussions, with one side geared to protecting their investments, and the other side protecting their homes.

Landlords and tenants shared tables and worked together. The evening began with about 90 individuals who dedicated themselves to the task for the next grueling three hours. Sessions run from 7-10 p.m.

On Monday, Singh expressed his observation that conditions between landlords and tenants in Beverly Hills had created an “imbalance of power” in favor of the landlords, which he cautioned against.

On the first evening, Singh asked each group to list issues of concern for both parties.

With landlords and tenants working together, each table named between five to 15 issues, producing a common ground from which to begin the discussions.

As an exercise, Singh asked each table to produce proposals for determining rent increases.

One by one, each table put forth their suggestions, until Singh could summarize the discussions regarding rent increases as follows: • Rent increases should be performance-based, on actions by landlords that include habitability standards.

• Increases should take into consideration the size of the building, and/or the number of units owned by the landlord; • Some felt that rent increases should be strictly tied to the Consumer Price Index (CPI); • Others believed that rent increases should be between three-to-eight percent with a capital improvement passthrough to the renters; • Seniors and handicapped should be protected; Renters expressed their concerns that they were not being represented fairly

The awards, which will be presented in a ceremony at the Playboy Mansion on Aug. 7, begun in 1979 by Christie Hefner to honor people who help protect and enhance First Amendment rights in journalism, government, book publishing and education.

“For decades, the First Amendment Awards have honored and celebrated distinguished individuals whose actions support and often fight to preserve the values of the First Amendment,” says Christie Hefner, chairman of the Hugh M. Hefner First Amendment Awards.

“Especially now, it feels like

the First Amendment is under assault, so it is more important than ever that we recognize those who fight to preserve this precious right.”

For 45 years Neuborne has been one of the nation's foremost civil liberties lawyers, with career highlights that include serving as national legal director of the ACLU from 1981-1986, special counsel to the NOW Legal Defense and Education Fund from 19901996, and as a member of the New York City Human Rights Commission from 1988-1992.

Additional award winners include: Hasan Elahi (Arts & Entertainment), associate professor in the Department of Art at the University of Maryland; Timothy Garton Ash (Book Publishing), awarded for his book, Free Speech: Ten Principles For A Connected World; and Jenni Monet (Print Journalism), independent journalist and member of the Laguna Pueblo tribe.

Several spoke up, saying that their neighbors feared retaliation in the form of no-cause evictions and would not attend. Some renters who attended were concerned about tenants who speak Farsi, because they did not have a translator and were afraid to attend.

Singh explained that, as part of his preparations, he had spoken with both tenants and landlords who had given their contact information because they wished to be part of the discussion, although they could not attend. He had also researched and collected data from rent control ordinances in other cities.

Renters also spoke of aggressive landlords who have purchased multiple buildings and immediately raised rents, fired maintenance staff and refused to make needed repairs such as plumbing and heating as a passive “eviction.”

Most landlords denied they raised rents 10-percent in the past. One landlord vowed to aggressively raise rents every year to the maximum allowed.

Two more meetings are scheduled for Monday, July 17 and Tuesday, July 25 at Roxbury Park, 7-10 p.m. It is expected that more meetings will be scheduled, as needed, said Susan Heely Keane, the City’s director of the Community Development Department.

“My job is to investigate life; to stay sensitive to the world I’m in and figure out what to do,” he explained. “Art must continue to push our selves to higher goals.”

Over the years, Ezralow said he has learned to circumnavigate the intrinsic “challenge” in creating great work for commercial projects in order to effectively render “a service.” As a commercial artist he emphasized how critical it

was for him to learn his own limits in order to ensure that his audience would not be put off.

That experience, however, is incredibly different than when he is free to create without limits, such as his most recent work, which he partnered with his wife to accomplish. Indeed, residing temporarily in each seat at a live performance is an individual, each of whom is having a very unique experience. For some, Ezralow observed, the performances he creates will inspire the viewers to create something beyond that experience of watching, just as he has been inspired to create by various works of art and music.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR I went to the Farhang Foundation event on July 4 with friends. The mission of this group is to promote the culture and art of Iran and share it with the community at large. Although the idea of an Independence Day celebration is terrific, we had no idea that the one sponsored by this foundation would actually be a Persian community event with only Persian music (no patriotic American songs), messaging in Farsi, and virtually only Persian food (though there were a couple of Chinese and Mexican food trucks). Except for the American flag, there was absolutely no relevance for non-Persian people.

The people on the program spoke in English, but targeted their comments to the Persian community. We could not get close enough to see the Freedom Sculpture but plan to take a look at it on another occasion.

Although the sculpture may have been inspired by the ideals set forth by Cyrus the Great of Persia 2,500 years ago, it would have been better and more appropriate to hear about the ideals of Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and the signers of the Declaration of Independence.

I certainly don’t mind an all-Persian event, but this should have been made clear in the notice. We felt like total outsiders, as if visitors in a foreign country, surrounded by people who had not yet grasped that we live in a multi-cultural community.

This is the first July 4 program I have ever attended which did not reflect on our nation’s struggle for independence. The birth of our country was not easy, and the courage and fortitude of our American forefathers should have been cited.

It might be argued that other ethnic groups have special events. However, these are not promoted as celebrating the United States of America but specifically designed for a particular ethnic group and do not fall on a national holiday.

The 4th of July is a U.S.A. celebration.

Should a City-sanctioned program on that date be held on government property (i.e. Santa Monica Boulevard was closed from Avenue of the Stars to Wilshire Boulevard with various feeder streets also blocked off), then such an event should be designed for all community groups, regardless of which foundation may be hosting it.

I’m not sure this particular event is worthy of being repeated, but if the politicians deem it so, then there should be a multi-cultural committee to work through the program so there is more inclusion for all.

Non-Persian Americans should be made to feel part of the program, rather than apart and unwelcome.

A couple months ago, I wrote about my buddy Doc Kupka, the sax man from the funk band Tower of Power.

When I had lunch with Doc, one of the things discussed was about the legendary soul singer Lenny Williams, who sang lead vocals on three of Tower of Power’s more famous 1970s albums and hits like What Is Hip?, Only So Much Oil In The Ground and the beautiful ballad So Very Hard To Go which former President Barack Obama cited as his “favorite soul love song.”

Lenny left Tower of Power in 1975 to embark on a successful solo singing career which produced a hit collaboration with Kenny G in 1986 Don't Make Me Wait For Love Too Long and several songs he wrote and sung like Cause I Love You which was sampled by Kanye West when he produced the rap hit Overnight Celebrity for Twista in 2004.

Some 40 years ago this summer, Lenny released his Choosing You album with a hand clapping hit Shoo Doo Fu Fu Ooh which mentions “bumpin' down Sunset Boulevard” and Johnny Carson and Dinah Shore talk shows.

Check it out YouTube along with the recent Six In The Morning and the disco hit You Got Me Running which capitalized on the late '70s running boom.

Doc and I discussed how great it would be to have Lenny sing with Tower of Power again and after Doc went to see Lenny perform recently, he talked to him about appearing with the band at the San Mateo County Fair this past June. I was there to see the historic reunion happen and Lenny is still in amazing vocal shape and recently released a video of himself doing 50 push ups to celebrate 50 years in the music business. Lenny will hopefully reunite again with Tower of Power next year for its big 50th anniversary shows in their shared hometown of Oakland.

I invited Lenny to lunch recently and we hit my corner booth office at Nate ‘n Al to discuss a PR comeback campaign that I want to orchestrate for Lenny, as he is such a distinguished singer that deserves more media attention.

I first saw him perform in 1974 with Tower of Power at Birmingham High School and Chuck Berry was on the bill that day too. Lenny ordered an Al's chopped salad, keeping in tip top shape is a priority. I persuaded Lenny to have one chocolate covered marshmallow at Edelweiss Chocolates to seal the deal.

I submitted his song You Got Me Running to my former Olympic track star client Nick Symmonds to use in his training videos for his first ever marathon Nick will run in Honolulu this December.

I am trying to arrange for Lenny to be one of the guest singers at the “Summer of Love” concert that Stephen Wise Temple will perform Aug. 17 at Beverly Canon Gardens.
