Beverly Hills High School Principal Carter Paysinger Sues BHUSD, Lewis Hall, Alleging Discrimination By Laura Coleman Beverly Hills Principal Carter Paysinger filed suit against the Beverly Hills Unified School District and Boardmember Lewis Hall for job discrimination in United States District Court –

Central District on Wednesday. The suit includes allegations for retaliation and discrimination. The 31-page complaint seeks an unspecified amount of damages, and demands a jury trial on all claims.

Fuhrer Takes Helm As New Principal At Beverly Vista By Laura Coleman Beverly Vista’s new principal Christian Fuhrer has a plan. “I’m going to make sure all efforts are focused on kids,” the 12-year BHUSD veteran told The Courier this week during his second day at his new office. “Our schools are like families. By Victoria Talbot Forty Bel-Air homeowners visited the L.A. Planning Department Tuesday and successfully opposed yet another hauling permit from Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety (LADBS) to excavate 29,476- cubic yards of dirt to build a 40,000-square foot home, more than half of which is underground. The group persuaded the commission to delay the permit for 45 days with the support of Noah Muhlstein, planning deputy. The residence will have 16,000 square feet above ground and another 15,356 square feet, plus a 16-car garage, below ground.

The problems are so intense that neighbors have put together a video of trucks driving through the streets, calling it, “Welcome to Bel-Air-istan.” Koretz’s about-turn comes in the wake of two fatal accidents on Loma Vista that killed two LAPD officers. Ofc. Nicholas Lee died March 7 when when an out-ofcontrol dump tuck collided with an LAPD cruiser crushing the vehicle. Then on May 9, on the same stretch of road, LAPD Det. Ernest L. Allen, Sr. was killed when a runaway cement mixer crushed the truck he was driving. Koretz has (see ‘BEL-AIR,’ page 15)

LADBS To Revoke Permits, Close Construction At 901 Strada Vecchia In Bel-Air Updated by www.bhcourier.com By Matt Lopez Just hours after Los Angeles City Councilman Paul Koretz demanded construction work at 901 Strada Vecchia, one of the most talked-about new developments in Bel-Air, be stopped, the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety has stepped in this week and and done just that. ect, dated July 14, with a “notice to stop all construction” as well as a notice of intent to revoke a handful of building permits the project had previously been issued. The five permits being revoked include permits for the construction of a single family home with accessory retaining walls, swimming pool, detached deck and related grading work. In the letter, Kumabe notes that the LADBS has learned the permits were issued in error (see ‘901 STRADA VECCHIA,’ page 18)

Memorial Service For Dr. Ralph L. Hutchings Saturday At Beverly Hills Presbyterian Church By John L. Seitz A memorial service will be held tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Beverly Hills Presbyterian Church for resident Ralph L. Hutchings, M.D. who died on June 29 at age 76 after a yearlong bout with cancer. The cardiothoracic surgeon practiced at a number of local hospitals including St. John’s Health

Center, UCLA Santa Monica and UCLA. The graduate of the University of Michigan, where he was a star athlete, and Wayne State University Medical School followed his service in the U.S. Army stationed in Germany with a 5year residency at Baylor College of Medicine. Working

Beverly Hills Triathlon Club Trains In Summer By Laura Coleman The Beverly Hills Triathlon Club for kids age 10-17 is underway once again this year. Started in 2006 by Susan Kolko, the daily summer program trains young Beverly Hills athletes to compete in the UCLA Iron Bruin and other local events.

“Triathlon is a growing sport at the collegiate level, especially for women,” she said. “UCLA is ranked #1 in the country for the sport and the perfect resource base for young athletes.” By 2015, Kolko said the league plans to have four competing teams training: West

Cultural Heritage To Recommend Five For Landmark Designation By Victoria Talbot Beverly Hills' Cultural Heritage Commission will recommend six new properties for landmark designation following the regular quarterly meeting last week, including the Ahmanson Bank and Trust Building at 9145 Wilshire Blvd., the “Heegaard-Writers and Artists Building” at 9507 Santa Monica Blvd., the Caldwell Residence (“Hughes crash house”) on North Linden Drive, Hillhaven Lodge on Benedict Canyon., and the Joe E. Brown residence on Walden Drive by Master Architect Rene Riverre. The Ahmanson Bank and Trust, now First Bank, is a Mil-

lard Sheets-designed building built in 1959, prominently displaying Sheets' iconic murals on the facade. The Heegaard-Writers and Artists building was built in 1924 as a collaboration between architects Roy Seldon Price and the firm of Gable and Wyant by A.C. Heegaard and J.F. Hohn in a Spanish Colonial Revival style. The Caldwell Residence is also referred to informally as the “Hughes crash house" because it was damaged in 1946 when aviator Howard Hughes crash-landed a plane he was test-flying, nicking the home’s garage and roof. Rodin’s Shadow Figures At Barnsdall Park Through Aug. 17 By Laura Coleman The nation’s first exhibition of Auguste Rodin’s Figures d’ombres (Shadow Figures) debuted Saturday night with a private reception at Barnsdall Art Park in celebration of the 50th anniversary of L.A.Bordeaux as Sister Cities. The exhibition, which includes 127 prints and artifacts from the Bordeaux’s Musée Goupil’s Rodin collection, will be on view through Aug. 17 and will feature several free printmaking workshops.

Omega Celebrates Malibu Clothes Celebrating Its 69th Moon Landing With Anniversary Years Of Attiring Men Beverly Hills Party By Laura Coleman Omega celebrated the 45th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing with astronaut Buzz Aldrin at an out-of-this world cocktail event Wednesday evening in Beverly Hills. The swank event, which took place in the last home famed architect John Lautner ever designed, commemorated the iconic Omega Speedmaster Professional “Moonwatch,” which Aldrin wore on his spacesuit during that historical mission. The evening at the renowned Sheats-Goldstein House, which included sweeping views of the City leading out to the ocean, benefitted the MAK Center for Art and Architecture. Aldrin and Mission Commander Neil Armstrong were the first two humans to set foot on the Moon during the Apollo 11 lunar landing on July 20, 1969. In honor of the significant year, Omega is producing 1,969 limited edition Speedmaster Professional Apollo 11 45th Anniversary Limited Edition watches.

By Victoria Talbot Rick Firestone grew up in the clothing business. His father founded the family store in 1958 that he and his sons now run at 259 S. Beverly Dr. The store has a vast selection of fine menswear in every size and color and its own onpremises tailoring. Decades ago the shop was started in downtown Los Angeles by Bill and Stan Firestone. Originally a wholesale operation, the pair began accommodating customers for a few dollars over their cost. Eventually, word spread and the store grew into one of the most successful in the nation. “The secret is that we sold the largest volume of any store

in the country,” Firestone said. “My dad invented discount clothing in the 50’s.” Malibu Clothes boasts having attired men from across the globe, including the stars of Falcon Crest and Dynasty and major league sports figures including Willie Mays and Michael Jordan. JNF’s Sunshine Mission Visits Jerusalem’s Ammunition Hill On the same day that Jewish National Fund (JNF)’s 2014 Sunshine Mission was visiting Jerusalem’s Ammunition Hill, hundreds of Israeli schoolchildren were also at the site to learn about the historic battle for the reunification of Jerusalem in 1967. Although the school children weren’t born until decades later, the participants of the Sunshine Mission, active seniors 55 and older, were alive to witness the dramatic Six Day War. For many of the 40 Sunshine Mission participants being able to travel with Hal Linden (stage and screen actor, director, musician and JNF’s national spokesperson), was a powerful incentive to visit Israel with JNF. Although Linden’s mother kept a kosher kitchen, he described his father as a “twotime a year Jew” who was, nonetheless, a passionate Zionist. In 1912, Linden’s father co-founded The Order Sons of Zion, a Zionist support organization. In 1944, the group changed its name to B’nai Zion and remains active today. Despite having a fervently Zionist father, Linden grew up a staunch assimilationist. “As a child, I was friends with all the Italian and Irish kids in our Bronx neighborhood,” said Linden. “I didn’t believe there was a need for a state for Jews. World War II changed my position on that.” In the 1970s, while starring in the TV show Barney Miller, Linden first visited the young State of Israel. Barney Miller wasn’t screened on Israeli TV, but when he met then-Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and the latter’s wife Aliza confessed that she watched the show on Jordanian TV. After his first trip to

Israel, Linden provided decades of devoted support to many Jewish organizations, performing in hundreds of benefits for JNF and other Jewish organizations. In 1997, JNF recruited Linden to become its national spokesperson. After completing his second tour of Israel and being impressed with the range of JNF’s projects, Linden readily agreed to serve. Linden’s wife, Fran Martin, who died in 2010, was so fascinated with the breadth of JNF’s work on behalf of Israel that she became a founding member of the Sapphire Society, JNF’s major gift division for women. Water conservation projects are especially close to Linden’s heart. He dedicated a reservoir in the Jordan River in his father’s memory. Fifteen years ago, he starred in a JNF campaign featuring his then 1year-old grandchild putting a coin into a JNF Blue Box. The campaign’s slogan was, “Your parents planted the trees. It’s up to you to water them.” In September, Linden will attend the JNF National Conference in Los Angeles along with hundreds of American Jews, California Gov. Jerry Brown and dignitaries from Israel. He will also be participating in a session on the connections between Hollywood and Israel. Sunshine Mission was the ideal trip for experienced travelers and first-timers. Learning about JNF’s involvement in oil, gas and water issues and the potential of the Leviathan Gas Field to change the political reality of Israel’s relationship with Turkey and Egypt. Westside Neighborhood Councils Adopt Motion for Emergency Hillside Measures To Control Truck Activity In The City of Los Angeles, Including Bel-Air By Victoria Talbot The Westside Regional Alliance of Council (WRAC) unanimously approved a motion Wednesday to establish emergency measures to control truck activities on the hillsides in the city of Los Angeles. The motion reads: “Resolved that WRAC supports the establishment of emergency measures to control excessive truck activities in the hillsides including the enforcement and monitoring of permits, haul routes and truck staging areas on the Westside.” WRAC support is an important confirmation that the problems that beset Bel-Air and Beverly Hills hillsides are affecting neighborhoods across the hillside region. “They basically laid out what’s been going on in the hills,” said Brentwood Community Council president emeritus Nancy Freedman. Brentwood and Pacific Palisades have also been besieged with hillside development, but have not yet organized like Bel Air residents. Freedman recognizes the

importance of this motion for the Brentwood area. “We’ve had problems, too,” she says. “They [WRAC members] voted unanimously for the motion. They are sympathetic to the problem.” WRAC is a coalition of Westside neighborhood and community councils throughout West L.A., both in hillsides and in ‘flats’. Neighborhood and community councils are a system of influential advisory boards that work with the city of L.A. to guide government. The councils report their findings to their councilmembers and the mayor. These local entities are the “boots on the ground” representatives for issues across the metropolitan area. The representatives who voted at WRAC will report back to their councils. The hillside area is mostly under the jurisdiction of two city councilmember’s, Mike Bonin’s 11th District from Brentwood to the sea, and Paul Koretz’ 5th District, which oversees the Los Angeles hillsides from the west Adams District through Bel Air. There

are 13 other members of the Los Angeles City Council that need to be persuaded in order to affect any changes in legislation affecting hillside construction. At issue is the Baseline Hillside Ordinance authored by the Los Angeles Department of City Planning in May of 2011. The ordinance puts a height limit on homes but no limit on how far down developers can excavate. Developments are reaching staggering proportions, much of it underground like the home at 944 Airole Way in Bel-Air. That home is 85,154square feet and requires the removal of 39,805-cubic yards of dirt and 9,000 truck trips. Literally hundreds of dump trucks removing soil have become insidious in hillside neighborhoods and in surrounding neighborhoods that reach the hillside haul routes. Such a volume of trucks for excavation and cement mixers for building below ground without plans in place for safety inspections and truck weight management on the steep, nar-

row and winding streets could spell disaster. Not only is it reminiscent of the conditions in Beverly Hills that led to the Loma Vista accident, but also some streets are so narrow that emergency vehicles will have difficulty passing the streets. This is especially critical in the event of a fire such as the Bel-Air fire that burned hundreds of homes in the early 1960’s and the frequent ambulances. The Bel Air–Beverly Crest Neighborhood Council approved a similar, though far more specific, motion last month. That motion, written by the newly formed Bel-Air Homeowners Alliance, seeks limits on excavation volume and related truck activity, additional oversight and permit review, possible staggering of permits, revised hours for hauling and substantial bonding for street maintenance and increased violation oversight. They also want all projects that exceed 25,000-square feet to be treated much the same as a commercial project with environmental reports and public

reviews. Going forward, said Gary Plotkin, “WRAC’s Land Use Committee will further develop the rules and work with our neighborhoods.” The Land Use Committee will report back to the WRAC board members and formulate a plan to present to the city of Los Angeles. Nobody’s going to stop development, says Plotkin, “but it can be more reasonable.

faced an onslaught of complaints from residents clashing with the developers, especially heavy haul vehicles like those that killed the LAPD officers in Beverly Hills. Bel-Air, besieged with excavation, faces a similar set of problems as developers take advantage of their unlimited by-right ability to burrow deep into the hillsides, with only haul routes and grading permits required. Councilman Koretz has made an impressive about-face on the runaway development that is threatening a way of life that has characterized Bel-Air for decades. Residents immediately impacted by the latest project include the 22 homes that line the narrow street that measures 211-239 inches across and is paved only with concrete. The steep, winding street was paved at residents’ expense and would not sustain the onslaught of 6,600 truck trips for the excavation alone. In addition, the width supports only one vehicle at a time, rendering residents trapped in an emergency and barring incoming first responders. An out-ofcontrol truck would take out the entire street in the case of brake failure. “None of us would be in the room if it was a 2,000square foot home,” said Fred Rosen, president of the Bel-Air Homeowners Alliance, formed to fight back against out of scale development and its consequences. The commission voted 3-1 in favor of a 45-day delay with Nunez voting in favor of issuing the permit. The four people who spoke on behalf of the project included the developer, the grading contractor, the engineering geologist and the owner’s representative, all with a business interest in the project. “I want to build my home on Somma Way,” said developer Dean Hallo, mischaracterizing himself as someone who would be living in the house. Residents shouted that he was a speculator, which he admitted. Rosen, he said, had phoned him and stated that the people downtown “are idiots,” and that they don’t like Rosen. “This fight is for nothing,” said Hallo, oblivious to the resident’s sentiments. “It’s a little silly.” Muhlstein requested that the commission give the homeowners and the council office time, “to insure safety and coordination between the contractors and the neighborhood.” Muhlstein pointed out that residents are afraid to leave their homes with so much construction and that Bel-Air currently has eight haul routes, with this the ninth, and only four ways in or out of the area. Commissioner Joselyn

July 18, 2014 | Page 15 Geaga-Rosenthal reminded Muhlstein that the project does conform to the community plan. “There is an ordinance that allows ‘McMansions.’ That should be brought up in city council, and not thrown in our laps,” she said. “We are currently working on legislation to address this issue,” Muhlstein said. He did not elaborate, but on Tuesday, Koretz office issued a letter to celebrity developer Mohamed Hadid for a Stop Work Order that was followed by a letter to LADBS. That prompted the General Manager Raymond Chan to pull several of the project’s permits pending an investigation into the legality of Hadid’s permit applications. Several residents favored of postponement. “Fire trucks cannot get up and there is no escape,” said Larry Kopald who lives on Somma Way. Several residents complained that LADBS had not properly notified them. DBS staff member Jason Healy contends that the office has proof that notification was done properly. Commissioner Javier Nunez, president of the Laborers Local 300 representing construction workers, accused the residents of “attacking” the LADBS staff improperly, and insisted that they had been notified properly. In May, Eric Garcetti re-appointed Nunez to the commission. But in 2006, Antonio Villaraigosa removed Nunez, who was then-president of the commission, for receiving special treatment from building officials on construction projects. At that time, Nunez denied the charges. It is not known whether Mayor Garcetti understood that Nunez had previously been removed. “That is the price you pay if you live in this area,” said Nunez. He said that if the project is postponed for 45-days, “we are going to hear more opposition because we give them more time for more opposition. I know that when the community gathers together they network, and I know that for a fact,” he said, as if involving the impacted community was detrimental to the process. The developer has the right to build a house, Interim Commission President Van Ambatielos said. But it is “the hidden element of community safety and common sense – what I am hearing from the people who live there is the eminent danger that something will happen without proper supervision and looking at the issues.” The commissioners expressed skepticism that the community would be able to find a solution in 45-days and warned residents that if they did not have, “recommendations that go beyond,” the current processes in place, the permits would still be issued.

Children’s Hospital Named One Of The ‘Most Wired’ Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) has been named one of the nation’s “Most Wired” hospitals by Health & Health Networks. The magazine measures the level of health information technology (IT) adoption annually in U.S. hospitals and health systems through an annual survey process. Being named to the list is recognition of a health-care organization’s investment in technology that supports patient safety, quality care and best health-care practice. Although 680 hospitals and health networks participated in this year’s study, only 375 were named to the list. Hospitals that invest in health IT often offer their patients care that is better coordinated and more streamlined and the opportunity to empower themselves through direct access to their own medical records. When clinicians have instant access to the information they need to make care decisions, patients can benefit with faster and more comprehensive recoveries.

UCLA Hospitals Ranked Among The Nation’s Best By U.S. News The UCLA Health System’s hospitals in Westwood and Santa Monica have been named to U.S. News & World Best Hospitals Report’s 2014–15 Honor Roll. UCLA was ranked #5 in the country and #1 in both California and the L.A. metropolitan area. UCLA Study Focuses On Depressed Men With Prostate Cancer Depressed men with localized prostate cancer were more likely to be diagnosed with more aggressive prostate cancer, received less effective treatments and survived for shorter times than prostate cancer patients who were not depressed, a UCLA study has found. The negative outcomes may be the result of several factors such as bias against the mentally ill, depression’s impact on biological cancer processes, the depressed man’s lack of investment in his general health and disinterest in receiving more effective care, and missed opportunities by physicians to educate patients about prostate cancer screening and treatment, said study lead author Dr. Jim Hu, UCLA’s Henry E. Singleton Professor of Urology and director of robotic and minimally invasive surgery at UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine. “Men with intermediate- or high-risk prostate cancer and a recent diagnosis of depression are less likely to undergo definitive treatment and experience worse overall survival,” Hu said. “The effect of depressive disorders on prostate cancer treatment and survivorship warrants further study, because both conditions are relatively common in men in the United States.” The study appeared last week in the early online edition of the Journal of Clinical Oncology, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

because “the height of the single family dwelling exceeds the height limit as permitted by the Los Angeles Municipal Code Section 12.21.1.” and “as per inspection records, as built construction does not reflect the approved construction shown on the approved set of plans.” The authority for LADBS to revoke permits is contained in LAMC section 98.0601, which reads: “The department shall have the authority to revoke any permit, slight modification or determination whenever such action was granted in error or in violation of other provisions of the code and conditions are such that the action should not have been allowed.” Jeff Napier, Principal Inspector for LADBS confirmed Thursday that inspection staff visited the site on Thursday and verified that all work has been stopped. Horacek told The Courier that he believes the LADBS ruling is a good first step. “I am gratified by the support of Councilman Koretz and by the swift and decisive action taken by the LADBS,” Horacek said. “I am also deeply appreciative of the work done by Victor de la Cruz at Manatt and by the support of the new Bel-Air Alliance and its members.” Hadid has until July 30 to appeal. The Courier reported last week that the neighbor directly below the nearly 30,000square-foot property, Joseph Horacek, is alleging that Hadid’s project has skirted numerous permit processes for grading and other construction-related activity, and has continuously ignored “Orders to Comply” by the city of L.A. when certain violations were found. Late last week, Horacek’s legal

Koretz got involved in the festering dispute Monday in a scathing letter sent to the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety. The Courier obtained a copy of a letter from Koretz to LADBS General Manager Raymond Chan. In the letter, Koretz urges the LADBS chief to “put a hold on all project permits and order all work at this property to cease so your department has an opportunity to study the issues raised by community members.” In his letter, Koretz details what was reported last week by The Courier, saying: “The project appears to have ignored Orders to Comply issued by LADBS, in the process performing a substantial amount of unpermitted grading and demolishing the prior home without a permit. Among other things, the number of retaining walls on the property also appears to exceed the total permitted by Code, and the site’s natural grade may have been misrepresented in order to permit a project that exceeds the Code’s height limit.” Koretz goes on to note “It is hard to believe a project that looks more like the Getty Center than a home could be built without a single discretionary entitlement or public input – not even a mere haul route.” Hadid and his attorney Bruce Rudman were unavailable for comment before Thursday’s deadline. Last week, Hadid told The Courier that he stands by the work being done at 901 Strada Vecchia and believes it is all in line with code. “We have our permits. We’re being inspected daily, pretty much. Grading inspectors are there, building inspectors are there,” Hadid said. “All our permits are current.”

The suit alleges that Boardmembers Hall and Lisa Korbatov led, “a campaign of discrimination and retaliation” The lawsuit also states: “On information and belief, the district’s conduct was malicious, wanton, or oppressive, was driven by evil motive or intent, or involved a reckless or callous indifference to Mr. Paysinger’s federally protected rights.” Paysinger’s attorney Reed Aljian did not respond to the question of what he expected a trial by jury would yield. “Among other things, Mr. Paysinger intends to expose defendants’ pervasive misconduct and to protect the next employee or student from suf-

I know it as a parent and I know it as a colleague. But sitting in the office now, and sort of leading this campus now, I’m looking forward to seeing it in action.” Fuhrer originally joined the district as a long-term substitute at Horace Mann in 2002 where he launched a computer program before the job became permanent. His wife, Christy Fuhrer, continues to work as a first grade teacher at Horace Mann. After nine years at Horace Mann, including a sixth-month stint as the school’s interim assistant principal, he was tapped to be Hawthorne’s assistant principal. “That was a remarkable experience.” he said. “To me, [Hawthorne Principal Kathy Schaeffer] is the model of what a high functioning successful administration does. She’s not afraid to do the job herself. She’s not afraid to ask questions. And she does it with such good nature.” Hawthorne, which is celebrating its centennial year, has been touted as a model for its iPad initiative and roll-out, having the highest test scores in the district (“Not that it’s a competition!” Fuhrer noted.) and being named a California Distinguished School. The Caldwell Residence marks the first time a home has ever been recommended for landmark status without the homeowner’s approval. That will be deliberated in City Council. The other five nominations are expected to pass without incident.

Dogs and cats can’t sweat like humans, so they pant to lower their body temperature. If they’re inside a car, recycling hot air, panting gives no relief, and heat stroke can happen quickly.

It has been said, (sung, actually), that “Only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun.” The truth of this catchy little verse gets put to the test every July in the Desert as approximately 400 guests (not all English) and their pets (not only dogs, but cats and birds as well) brave triple-digit temperatures to attend the annual mid-summer luncheon gala in support of “Pets on Parade,” held at the pet-friendly Doral Desert Princess Resort in Cathedral City. Pets on Parade was conceived over 15-years ago by Lori Sarner (pictured) as a fund-raising partnership to raise money for her beloved Pegasus Therapeutic Riding, (the new name of Pegasus Riding Academy for the Handicapped), which offers nocharge, equine-based therapy to otherwise wheelchair-bound riders and the Humane Society of the Desert, which sponsors the largest ‘no-kill’ animal sanctuary in Southern California. The idea behind Pets on Parade is simple–it’s all about the animals. Pet photos in eight distinct categories are submitted for anonymous judging and publication in a full-color souvenir journal that is presented to every luncheon guest. Winners, as well as runners up are also acknowledged with a certificate and ribbon. You never know what you’ll see at a Pets On Parade luncheon. Past entries included an aquarium-based shark and a wounded coyote. This year’s journal featured such rarities as an albino deer and an albino hummingbird. I’ve attended this event for over a decade and leave each luncheon in awe of the pets in attendance and how well behaved they are. No barking, growling, hissing or other mischievous behaviors. Now, if only we adults can replicate these feats of civility. Independence Day celebration given by Galen and Jamie Kabler at her Century Woods manse that could double as a very exclusive museum of modern art. Although Galen also maintains an art-filled home in the Desert, she ushered in the beginning of her summer residency in L.A. with what else?–a party. And of course, knowing it was a Helene Galen produced one, what seemed like half of the Desert’s “A”-list made the journey to Century City to join in the celebration. Tables were long with side-by-side seating–laid out ranch style and decorated in bunting and all things red, white and blue. Food was hot-dog-and-apple-pie American. Among the 200-plus guests invited to celebrate this country’s birthday with Galen and partner Jamie Kabler were former California Gov. Gray Davis; Shelly (talk about anything but basketball) Sterling; Monty (Let’s Make A Deal) and Marilyn Hall; the incomparable Rhonda Fleming; socialite Diane DeShong; David Webb celebrity jeweler Kevin Parker; TV executive, Gary Pudney; and, the always glamorous Margie Victor. Party guests were set home with a huge chocolate chip cookie, and for the ladies, a rose. Though suffering from an ulcerated, painful leg, it did not stop him from walking the length of California and founding the first nine missions which exposed the Indian tribes to the white man's European diseases. Serra was a hard taskmaster with his insistence on the Indians abiding to Catholic rules,and sexual mores and beatings if they broke the rules. Talks Books Journey To The Sun: Junipero Serra’s Dream And The Founding Of California (Scribner $30) is a well written book by Gregory Orfalea that tells the story of this famous Franciscan priest. Born 1713, he attended San Bernadino in Petra. In August 1790, Serra set sail for the new world or “New Spain” with the quest to convert the Indians to Catholicism. Serra left behind a farewell letter which is truly remarkable in that it has survived all those years. Serra took to this new

ISN’T IT RICH? By Maureen Dowd (c.2014 New York Times News Service) WASHINGTON - Chelsea Clinton never acted out during the 8-years she came of age as America's first daughter. No ditching of her Secret Service detail. No fake IDs for underage tippling. No drug scandal. No court appearance in tank top and toe ring. Not even any dirty dancing. Despite a tough role as the go-between in the highly public and embarrassing marital contretemps of her parents, Chelsea stayed classy. So it’s strange to see her acting out in a sense now, joining her parents in cashing in to help feed the rapacious, gaping maw of Clinton Inc. With her 1-percenter mother under fire for disingenuously calling herself “dead broke” when she left the White House, why would Chelsea want to open herself up to criticism that she is gobbling whopping paychecks not commensurate with her skills, experience or role in life? As the 34-year-old tries to wean some of the cronies from the Clinton Foundation— which is, like the Clintons themselves, well-intended, wasteful and disorganized— Chelsea is making speeches that go into foundation coffers. She is commanding, as The New York Times’ Amy Chozick reported, up to $75,000 per appearance. Chozick wrote: “Ms. Clinton’s speeches focus on causes like eradicating waterborne diseases. (‘I’m obsessed with diarrhea’ is a favorite line.)” There’s something unseemly about it, making one wonder: Why on earth is she worth that much money? Why, given her dabbling in management consulting, hedgefunding and coattail-riding, is an hour of her time valued at an amount that most Americans her age don’t make in a year? (Median U.S. household income is $53,046.) If she really wants to be altruistic, let her contribute the money to some independent charity not designed to burnish the Clinton name as her mother ramps up to return to the White House and as she herself drops a handkerchief about getting into politics. Or let her speak for free. After all, she is in effect going to candidate school. No need to get paid for it, too. There was disgust over Politico’s revelation that before she switched to a month-tomonth contract, Chelsea was getting wildly overpaid at $600,000 annually—or more than $25,000 per minute on air - for a nepotistic job as a soft-focus correspondent for NBC News. Chelsea is still learning the answer to a question she asked when she interviewed the Geico gecko: “Is there a downside to all this fame?” The Clintons keep acting as though all they care about is selfless public service. So why does it keep coming back to gross money grabs? It’s gone from two-for-the-priceof-one to three-for-the-price-of-20. Hillary’s book—which feels like something she got at Ikea and had someone put together—is drooping because it was more about the estimated $13 million advance and the campaign ramp-up than the sort of intriguing self-examination and political excavations found in the memoirs of Timothy Geithner and Bob Gates. If she had had something to say, the book might have been shorter. Hillary doesn’t see the disconnect between expressing grave concern about mounting student loan debt while scarfing six-figure sums from at least eight colleges, and counting. She says now that she’s passing the university money to the foundation but, never Ms. Transparency, has refused to provide documentation of that. (She’s still pocketing other huge fees for speeches like her April talk in Las Vegas to the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries.) Chozick estimated that the lucrative family speechmaking business has generated more than $100 million for the former president and first lady, whose fees range from $200,000 to $700,000 per appearance. Bill alone earned $17 million last year doing what he likes to do best - talking. “The issue is that the philanthropic beneficiary of the speeches is a foundation, structured as a public foundation but clearly synonymous with and controlled by the Clinton family,” Rick Cohen writes in The National Philanthropy Quarterly, adding: “Donors and institutions that are paying them and their daughter huge sums for their speeches may very well be buying recognition and face time with powerful political leaders who they hope will be able to deliver political favors in the future. “It is troubling when corporate donors give to political charities with a more or less obvious expectation that softer and gentler treatment will ensue in the future. It is also troubling when some of the payers are public or nonprofit entities themselves such as colleges and universities, converting taxpayer funds and tax-exempt donations into signals that could end up in positive treatment when these institutions are themselves seeking access and favors, even if it is only a good word put in by one of the Clintons to a federal agency providing funding or to a regulator who might be taking a critical look at university tuitions and endowment payouts.” The Clintons were fiercely protective of Chelsea when she was a teenager, insisting on respect from the media and getting it. They need to protect their daughter again, this time from their wanton acquisitiveness.

Rabbi Jacob Pressman BAN THE BAGS Beverly Hills is currently attempting to improve the environment by banning the commercial use of plastic bags. Single-use plastic bags have disappeared from major stores on July 1. On Jan. 1, 2015, they will also vanish from pharmacies and other small stores. The ultimate solution might well be asking that retail customers bring their own containers, thus the use of those containers will be repeated over and over again. It was not too long ago historically that people all brought their own containers from home when they went shopping. I remember as a child, when sent shopping for the family, I would bring my own family bags to the market over and over again. It seems to me that this will avoid a great deal of waste and encourage a more efficient use of whatever bags we bring with us for shopping. It would also encourage people to create their own containers, like they used to do, with perhaps a more pleasant appearance. More important maybe, the measure should considerably reduce the number of plastic bags ending up in the ocean and further contaminating our waters. Californians throw away 123,000 tons of plastic bags each year, and many of them end up destroying wildlife, as turtles and seabirds frequently eat floating bags, mistaking them for food.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR In regards to Steve Spitz’ letter, I’m amazed at how people make the Common Core State Standards a political cause. “Obama supports it, so I won’t.” Really? Who cares? Politics need to stay out of our schools so we can focus on the purpose of schools, which is to educate our students. What so many people don’t understand is that Common Core State Standards is what it says – Standards. It is not the curriculum, it’s not the testing. Forming these standards took the work of experts and the input from thousands of parents, teachers, administrators and other experts. The actual implementation of Common Core - how the standards are taught, the curriculum developed, the materials used to support teachers as they help students reach the standards, is entirely up to us. I haven’t seen the textbooks, but can only assume that they are far from perfect. Being so new, how can these books be otherwise? The textbook must be seen as a tool. If teachers have a better way of teaching a concept, they should use it. The assessments are also imperfect. This is why the Gates Foundation suggested a 2-year moratorium on using Common Core assessments for critical decisions. As with anything, the more we use something, the more effective it becomes. Also, it is important to know that Common Core is not inclusive. Some things are left out, but this doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be taught. An example I like to use is tessellation. To understand how a tessellation works is not part of the Common Core standards. But if I were a 6th or 7th grade math teacher, I would include this somewhere in my lesson plan as long as I could cover all the standards specified in Common Core. Why would I include something else? Because tessellation is cool and fun and I know how to teach it well. I could bring an added level of excitement to the math lesson. Noah Margo’s op-ed in The Courier was indicative of individuals and groups of people who create situations, conflicts and even crises–and, when questioned or challenged–refuse to take responsibility, issue self serving statements and ask us to hold hands and sing, ”Give peace a chance.” The demeaning and outrageously infantile remarks made about our children and neighborhood were not taken out of context. They were the actual words spoken by individuals who to my knowledge have not publicly apologized. And where is the open “discourse,” or any discussion for that matter on Common Core?
