By Matt Lopez Celebrity developer Mohamed Hadid was fined, ordered to perform 200 hours of community service and tasked with quickly creating a plan to bring his 901 Strada Vecchia megamansion, which has long angered neighbors, into compliance Thursday in Van Nuys Superior Court.

One of the biggest remaining issues – whether or not Hadid will be forced to post a construction bond that would cover the city’s cost of demolishing the mansion if its not brought into compliance – was not decided at yesterday’s hearing.

Hadid, 68, pled no contest on May 30 to misdemeanor counts of

building a non-permitted structure, failing to bring the building into compliance and failing to comply with stop work orders from the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety.

At Thursday’s hearing, Superior Court Judge Eric Harmon ordered Hadid – who, as has been customary in this trial, did not attend Thursday’s hearing – to three years probation and to pay $14,191 in restitution to the City of Los Angeles and $3,000 in fines.

The probationary period gives Hadid three years to bring the property into compliance with building code and complete it. Otherwise, a 180-day jail sentence could begin. (see ‘HADID SENTENCING’ page 19)

By Laura Coleman Beverly Hills Unified School District took its yearslong fight against the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in Pasadena last Friday in its latest effort to have the Westside subway extension not run beneath Beverly Hills High School classrooms.

“There are far more direct alignments to the Constellation Station,” BHUSD attorney Jennifer S. Recine, with Kasowitz Benson Torres LLP, reminded the panel of three judges in her opening arguments.

Recine argued that the Ninth Circuit needed to enjoin funding for Section 2 of the

Purple Line subway extension so that the agencies could objectively analyze alternatives without being swayed by the ongoing expenditures for the design build contract with Tutor Perini. In January Metro awarded a $1.37 billion contract to the joint venture team of Tutor Perini/O & G to build the second section of the Metro Purple Line Extension Project to Century City.

“At the end of the day all BHUSD is asking is for Metro to align the subway to go underneath its athletic field and not its instructional buildings,” Board of Education member Howard Goldstein emphasized to the Courier.

The Valley Performing Arts Center at Cal State Northridge will be renamed after philanthropists Younes and Soraya Nazarian to acknowledge a $17 million gift from their foundation, under action taken Tuesday by the California State University Board of Trustees.

The couple’s gift will go toward programming and operations at the 6-year-old concert hall, to be called the Younes and Soraya Nazarian Center for the Performing Arts.

Beverly Hills Gets Strict On Marijuana, Banning Any Commercial Sales

By Matt Lopez Anyone with hopes of operating a marijuana-related business in Beverly Hills anytime soon saw their dreams go up in smoke at Tuesday’s Beverly Hills City Council meeting.

The City Council voted 4-0 – with Councilmember John Mirisch not present – to strengthen its existing marijuana ordinance, officially prohibiting any marijuana dispensaries, stores, co-ops or cultivation operations from operating within Beverly Hills.

Since voters passed Proposition 64 last November, which allowed recreational use of marijuana by adults in California, the Beverly Hills City Council has expressed a

desire to roll up its marijuana laws as tight as is legally allowed.

State law currently allows for the use and personal cultivation of marijuana by anyone over the age of 21 and imposes state taxes on non-medical marijuana sale and commercial marijuana cultivation.

Local municipalities are allowed, however, to regulate and tax marijuana businesses in their jurisdictions.

“It is in the best interest of this City that we adopt this ordinance,” Vice Mayor Julian Gold said. “The early information coming from Colorado, which I consider to be a test bed for this, has not been positive for the most part.”

According to a report com-

piled by Beverly Hills staffers, traffic accidents increased 48percent over a three-year average in Colorado, where marijuana was approved for recreational use in 2012. In Washington, where marijuana was also approved for recreational use in 2012, marijuanarelated traffic accidents increased 122-percent over a four-year period from 2010 to 2014.

What is legal in Beverly Hills – even after Tuesday’s vote by the City Council – is residential cultivation of up to six marijuana plants and public possession of up to 28.5 grams of cannabis.

“If it were up to me,” said Mayor Lili Bosse after Tuesday’s vote. “I would go stricter.”

Singh, a Pepperdine University law professor and associate director of the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution, succeeded in attracting a much larger group of tenants to the meetings, which have been mostly made up of landlords until Monday.

Many tenants were present for the first time.

Armed with agenda Items that came out of session one and proposals from session two that expressed the thoughts of both tenants and landlords, Singh separated the groups and asked them to find what they could agree upon as a starting point from their separate groups.

With the two parties segre-

gated, the groups labored unhampered in pursuit of agreement, often expressing deep-seated resentments and distrust for the City, the City Council and the other party.

The two groups vented their frustrations and aired grievances safely. Both groups selected facilitators from within their groups; Singh and City staff circulated between the rooms with City Councilmembers Les Friedman and Robert Wunderlich.

Many landlords said that they invested in rental properties based on the expectation of a 10-percent per year rental increase to cover their profit, costs and expenses.

Bystanders Thwart Attempted Robbery Of Beverly Hills Woman Outside Grill On The Alley

By Laura Coleman Bystanders were quick to lend a hand to one Beverly Hills woman who was the victim of an attempted street robbery last Friday just outside the popular Grill on the Alley.

After a black woman driving a silver Mini Cooper accosted the 60-something year-old resident last Friday around 2 p.m., brandishing what appeared to be a handgun in an attempt to steal the victim’s black Bottega Veneta purse, pedestrians rushed to the Beverly Hills local’s aid when she refused to let her leather bag go without a struggle, confirmed Beverly Hills Police Lt. Dave Hamel.

The perpetrator, L.A. resident Jennifer Davenport, 34, immediately dropped her weapon, which proved to be a replica handgun, and attempted to flee.

When police arrived on the scene, Davenport took off in her Mini to get away only to be apprehended and arrested

by BHPD. Davenport was subsequently booked and charged.

Hamel, who noted that BHPD is now investigating whether Davenport was driving a stolen Mini, said that Beverly Hills street robberies “typically” occur in this fashion.

While police recommend that victims hand over their possessions rather than their lives when such situations occur, Hamel highlighted how individuals react differently in the moment. Most impressive about this attempted robbery, he said, was that bystanders actually took action instead of just observing.

“That’s huge,” he said. “I think it’s very commendable that they came to her defense.”

Beverly Hills Gets ‘BOLD’ Beginning Sunday At Farmers’ Market

By Victoria Talbot No one throws a party quite like Beverly Hills Mayor Lili Bosse and this Sunday, Bosse will launch her new B.O.L.D. initiative (Businesses Open Later Days) with artist Ed Massey and the Beverly Hills community.

The public is invited to join Bosse at the Beverly Hills Farmers’ Market on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., to participate in hands-on civic engagement and to create colorful discs that will soon be afloat in the Lily Pond as a short-term art installation.

“I’m calling everyone to come out and paint with me this Sunday. It will be a fun, creative and engaging experience

and your art will part of an extraordinary floating exhibit,” Bosse said.

The event is free and all the materials will be provided.

Massey is perhaps best known for his painted lifeguard stations, colorful oases from Palos Verdes Peninsula to Zuma Beach. In 2015, the Massey brothers, with help from over 8,500 people, placed thousands of handpainted spheres in the water at MacArthur Park.

Now he’s bringing it home to Beverly Hills. Massey and his family are all Beverly Hills High School alumni. (see ‘BOLD’ page 13)

All Saints Parishioners Star In Staged Version Of To Kill A Mockingbird Though best known for its classic Academy Award-winning film adaptation, Harper Lee’s beloved Pulitzer Prizewinning novel of tolerance and intolerance, race and justice – To Kill A Mockingbird – was adapted for the stage with her permission a quarter-century ago. That adaptation will be presented

by All Saints’ Episcopal Church with a cast including professional actors from among its parishioners in six performances over two weekends starting tomorrow.

Proceeds will support the parish’s services to the homeless.

“Having sometimes been referred to as a ‘Hollywood’ parish, All Saints’ Beverly Hills is fortunate to have a number of fine actors among its parishioners,

and our cast includes a number of them,” said Parishioner James Chalke, producer/director who will also star as the iconic attorney Atticus Finch.

Adapted by playwright Christopher Sergel in 1990, this Mockingbird is a favorite of regional and school theaters, and has even been performed in London.

Performances will be at 7:30 p.m., July 21-22 and 28-29 and 5 p.m., July 23 and 30 at All Saints’ Parish, 504 N. Camden Drive, on the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard.

In honor of this pledge, the sixth floor of the Marion and John E. Anderson Pavilion, which opened in 2011, will be named the Panda Express Floor. In addition, a large panda statue will be permanently placed in CHLA’s Emergency Department bamboo garden.

These are meant to provide an engaging and fun distraction for young patients who may be fearful of being in a hospital setting.

From Bedside Barcodes To Patient Portals: CHLA Innovations Earn ‘Most Wired’ Designation Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) received a Health Care’s Most Wired 2017 designation last week from the American Hospital Association’s (AHA) Hospitals & Health Networks magazine.

“Most Wired hospitals are recognized not only because they hit industry benchmarks, but more importantly because they stay ahead of the curve for technology adoption and innovation,” says CHLA President/CEO Paul S. Viviano. “This recognition is a testament to the unceasing work of our Information Services team, a confirmation of the technological roadmap we’ve laid out for the future of our health system, and an affirmation to our patients and families that their medical records are secure and complete across our entire continuum of care.”

Hospitals & Health Networks, an AHA publication, annually assesses the level of health information technology (IT) adoption in U.S. hospitals and health systems through an extensive survey. The survey measures how each organization’s investment in technology supports patient safety, quality care and best practices. This

year’s Most Wired list included 461 of the 698 total participants surveyed. CHLA was one of 21 children’s hospitals to receive the designation.

“Safeguarding each child's health, safety and privacy is at the core of CHLA’s mission to offer transformative, compassionate care,” says Steve Garske, PhD, CHLA’s chief information officer. “This means each patient family—as well as our entire network of clinicians and specialists—must be able to depend on an intuitive, robust technology infrastructure.”

In the past few years, CHLA’s Information Services team (IS) has implemented several new systems and technologies, including: • Launching mobile and web patient portals in 2015 to give parents more immediate access to their child’s health record.

• Introducing barcode medication scanning to ensure the right child gets the right dosage of the right medication at the right time. CHLA is expanding this system this year and next to cover blood transfusion verification, milk administration and lab specimen identification.

• Unifying the electronic

health records (EHR) system across nearly all inpatient and outpatient services in 2016, reducing delays and virtually eliminating handwritten or phone referrals.

• Piloting limited remote telemedicine consultations in certain hospital clinics, such as The Vision Center.

• Behind-the-scenes improvement of intrusion detection and data governance infrastructure to protect health data from cyberattacks.

Health-care organizations participating in the Most Wired survey are required to submit comprehensive information about health information technology investments in four key areas: infrastructure, business and administrative management, clinical quality and safety and clinical integration between ambulatory services, physicians, patients and community partners.

If any advanced capability requirements are not met, the organization does not receive Most Wired designation.

CHLA will be honored at a ceremony for Most Wired recipients on July 28, during the AHA’s annual Health Forum and Leadership Summit.

Holmby Hills’ ‘Owlwood’ Estate Listed for $180 Million by Mercer Vine

By Victoria Talbot Mercer Vine announced Thursday that Owlwood Estate is listed with them for $180 million.

The historic property is a 12,600 square-foot Tuscan estate at 141 South Carolwood Dr. in Holmby Hills, built

by Master Architect Robert D. Farquhar in 1936.

The listing agent is Mercer Vine Founding Partner Adam Rosenfeld.

Originally owned by businessman Charles H. Quinn and his wife, Florence Letts Quinn, widow of Alfred Letts, the site was hand-picked by Letts who was the original developer of Holmby Hills. Letts died before building the home at the end of a cul de sac bordering on the Los Angeles Country Club. Florence Letts commissioned Farquhar to build what has become one of the most pedigreed homes in Los Angeles.

The original residence was the biggest mansion ever built in 1936,

offering six bedrooms, two staff bedrooms, seven full baths, a theater, an elevator and a guest house with a swimming pool.

The second owner was Joseph Drown, the founder of the Hotel BelAir, who lived in the home for only two years.

Subsequent owners included President of United Artists and Chairman of 20th-Century Fox Joe Schenck, William Keck of Superior Oil, Tony Curtis, Sonny and Cher, Chase and Ralph Mishkin and Monaco financier Ghazi Alta.

Alta added 4.6 acres to the original 3.7 acres. Alta sold the estate to Dawn and Roland Arnall in 2002. They added the adjacent estate, 10010 Sunset Boulevard. The three estates, comprising 10.1 acres, were consolidated as 10080 Sunset Blvd., the largest residence in Holmby Hills.

In September 2016, the estate sold for $90 million to buyer Sturmer Pippin Investments, LLC, represented by Adam Rosenfeld of Mercer Vine. The seller was represented by Ann Dashiell of Douglas Elliman Real Estate, setting the record for the third highest residential sale in Los Angeles history.

By Laura Coleman While the iconic movie stars who left their mark outside Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood may have passed from this world, powerful ink rubbings made by artist Sari Dienes are now on full display at Marc Selwyn Fine Art in Beverly Hills through Aug. 19.

The exhibition of Dienes’ Hollywood rubbings, entitled “Dear Sid, with Love,” marks the first solo show in L.A. of the work, which was created from 1955 to 1956. Dienes, a Hungarian/American artist whose career spanned six decades until her death in 1992, worked in a wide range of media, including paintings, drawings, sculptures, ceramics, sound installations and performance art. By the 1950’s Dienes began making large-scale rubbings of the urban landscape.

According to gallery owner Marc Selwyn, Dienes’ working process had a profound effect on other important

American artists such as John Cage, Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg, all of whom were her friends.

This exhibition contains 14 of the artist’s Hollywood rubbings and includes silver screen icons such as Ginger Rogers, Carmen Miranda and the Marx Brothers among others.

“It’s a form of pop art,” Selwyn said of the ghost-like rubbings. “In a way it’s like a photograph or a snapshot of an impression.”

Selwyn described how works like “Marx Brothers” (pictured), activate a static moment in time, with the rubbing’s burnt sienna tones creating a luminous space of gestural marks. Other works in the exhibit are likewise intimately nuanced in various colors to reflect the unevenness of the pavement, lyrical handwriting of the entertainers and other various additions, such as musical notes etched into concrete.

The impassioned discussions continued for nearly three hours.

Issues included rent increases, no-cause evictions, relocation fees, the rental registry, habitability standards, capital improvements and maintenance costs and the implementation of the program through the City and its facilitation.

Landlords expressed their concerns about how to manage rising costs, and if they can pass those costs through, as well as improvement costs, to tenants. One example used was the price of water in Beverly Hills, which peaked during the drought, and remains high.

Tenants expressed hope the City will play a role in protecting habitability standards

and facilitating communications, maintenance and repairs.

Going forward, Singh said each side will be asked to come up with a series of “guidelines and understandings” and to propose a committee from their group “to further represent their interests.”

At City Hall, the Beverly Hills City Council reconvened Tuesday after a summer break, but postponed the agenda item that would have enabled the infrastructure for the rent stabilization ordinance pending the return of Councilmember John Mirisch, who was out of country.

The agenda item was the Management Partners report with a proposal for staffing and program costs, and a resolution for funding to implement the City’s amended Rent Stabilization ordinance.

Portraits of Hope is a non-profit organization that works with children and adults who cope with serious health and physical conditions to provide creative therapy through participation in art projects.

All the discs used in the exhibition will be painted by community members, said Massey, using a special paint that responds to black light.

Volunteers will assist with hand-held black lights to illuminate the exhibition. “As soon as the sun goes down we’ll be illuminitating [the discs].

People from all over the world will enjoy them.”

The art installation will be launched Aug. 2 at 8 p.m. at the Lily Pond. The public is invited to enjoy the nighttime viewing as glow-in-the-dark volunteers help light up the pond for the public’s viewing pleasure. The discs will be lit every weekend throughout the summer.

“I am bursting with excitement. Together, as a community, we can create a bold, vibrant art installation with

world famous artist Ed Massey.

We will use fun, bright, glowin-the-dark florescent colors that will light up our night for the kick off of Beverly Hills’ truly ‘coming alive’ during the days and evenings,” said Bosse.

“Sunday’s community paint day is truly the start of painting our town B.O.L.D.” With this emphasis on evenings, the City, in partnership with the Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce, the Rodeo Drive Committee and the Beverly Hills Conference and Visitors Bureau, is offering an unprecedented series of events this summer to celebrate B.O.L.D. and balmy nights with the businesses of Beverly Hills.

On Aug. 3, the City will close Rodeo Drive for a firework display, treat-carts and a live DJ, kicking off summer evening shopping hours in Beverly Hills, the kick-off event for B.O.L.D. The summer evenings ahead will be filled with events, including an evening Walk with the Mayor on Aug. 10.

Comanche was invited to camp with the Memphis Grizzlies, but did not stick on their Summer League roster.

which just wrapped up in various locations – including Las Vegas – is a pre-season exhibition league which is largely used to showcase rookies, but also allows NBA developmental players the opportunity to essentially “try out” for an NBA team.

Many players who don’t get picked up by NBA clubs after Summer League will get

signed to a developmental contract by an organization’s “G League” team. The G League is the NBA’s official Minor League association.

Six-foot-9 Comanche, who led BHHS to a CIF title in his senior year, left Arizona after a sophomore season where he scored 6.3 points per game, but was not selected by a team in the June NBA draft.

Former football star O.J. Simpson, who was acquitted of double-murder in Los Angeles in one of the most publicized criminal trials of all time, was granted parole Thursday after serving nearly nine years in prison in Nevada for a Las Vegas armed robbery and kidnapping.

Simpson, 70, could be released as early as Oct. 1. A Nevada parole board voted 4-0 to grant Simpson parole, after a roughly 90-minute hearing in which the former running back and actor said he had been a model prisoner.

"I am sorry that things turned out the way they did. I had no intent to commit a crime. ... I tell the inmates all the time I don't want to hear about your crime. You know, ... in here we're all convicts. I'm a convict. Do your time and don't do anything to extend your time.” Simpson said.

Simpson added: I told the warden when I got here ... that I would be no problem. I believe in the jury system. I will honor what the jury said and I will be no problem, you know, and I think I kept my word."

Simpson was locked up in Lovelock, Nevada, in 2008 following his conviction for a botched attempt to retrieve sports memorabilia he claimed belonged to him. He was sentenced to 33 years behind bars, with a minimum of nine years without parole.

The ex-NFL star and codefendant Clarence "CJ" Stewart were found guilty on a dozen charges stemming from the confrontation at a Las Vegas hotel.

Prosecutors said Simpson used guns, threats and force to take photographs and other items from two sports memorabilia dealers.

The board previously granted Simpson parole in 2013 on a burglary count, and two counts each of kidnapping and robbery. However, he remained in prison on seven other charges related to use of a deadly weapon.

The case was not connected to the infamous trial and 1995 acquittal that transfixed the nation after Simpson was charged with murdering his 35-year- old ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her 25year-old friend, Ron Goldman.

But prompted by singer and friend Roberta Flack, he had a rough draft of the show four months after their first conversation.

The result is Born For This, a joyous and inspiring musical, playing through Sunday, Aug. 6 at The Broad Stage.

“Telling your story,” says Winans, “you have to be brave and honest; and some people are afraid of that.”

In the musical, six-time Grammy winner and seventh child of the first family of gospel music, Winans recounts himself at 17 and his sister CeCe at 15 joining Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker’s Praise The Lord Network.

After becoming the hottest stars in televangical America, the pair crossed over to the mainstream, befriended Whitney Houston, and BeBe had to reconcile the temptations of fame and fortune with what he valued more.

Winans isn’t a fan or reality shows, but he wanted to give people “a peek into the life of a family from Detroit with its flaws and challenges, and show how much music was a filter for us as well as a place to go to first soothe ourselves; and then take the songs to soothe the world.”

Though the show features a completely original score, Winans did revisit the title song, one he wrote years before,

In a copy of Washington’s letter dated July 6 obtained by the Courier, the Metro head writes to Rudy Svorinich, Jr. at Svorinich Government Affairs: “A Notice to Proceed with construction of the Section 2 stations and tunnels (C1120 Contract) was issued to the design build contractor on April 26, 2017. A delay to this contract would delay regional transit improvements to the Los Angeles County and cost Metro conservately $6 million per month ($72 to $108 million for 12 to 18 months).”

On Aug. 16, 2016, Wu ruled that the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) acted in an “arbitrary and capricious manner” with respect to the environmental effects of tunneling under BHHS in order to reach the Constellation station.

And while he did rule that the FTA violated the National Environmental Policy Act when it approved Section 2 of the Westside Subway Extension, he refused to vacate the Record of Decision when he made his ruling final on Beverly Hills Unified School District v.

Following Wu’s ruling, BHUSD unsuccessfully filed motions for injunctive relief against the FTA and Metro, seeking to enjoin the agencies from executing a Full Funding Grant Agreement and a design/build contract in an effort to ensure that the courtordered environmental reviews were completed and reviewed by the court before Metro made its significant financial commitment.

Justice Department attorney David Gunter told the Ninth Circuit panel that the “FTA has no financial incentive to decide about the alignment.”

Gunter urged the Ninth Circuit to not review the case, but to instead send the school district back to district court.

“I love to create and make pitches - it’s great,” she said.

Originally born in the “windy city” of Chicago, the big sister to three little brothers (her brother Bill, former president of NBC News, is still alive) Florence met her husband of 80 years, screenwriter Alan Surgal, while the two were studying at Chicago’s City College. After she graduated from Northwestern, she moved to New York, taking a job at Broadcasting Magazine, where she ended up being named the “best trade publication reporter,” by the North American Newspaper Alliance.

“It was exciting,” she said of covering broadcasting in its infancy. “It was the very beginning and we were experimenting, putting on different shows.”

While her love continued to blossom for her husband Alan, who died earlier this year at the age of 100, their partnership as a couple grew richer as the two began producing films together.

Inspired by their Manhattan penthouse apartment (Charlton Heston lived across the hall from them), they named their production company Penthouse Productions, Inc. Once the couple moved to California in 1976, leaving their adult sons Jon (an Emmy-award winning professor) and Tom (a filmmaker and a musician) in New York, after a short stint on Reeves Drive, the two took up residence at a penthouse apartment on Crescent Drive - where she continues to live today.

“I walked down this street and saw a sign that said ‘Penthouse’ and said, ‘That’s for me.’ And I’ve been here ever since,” she recalled.

As a woman producer in Hollywood – she said she was in fact the first independent woman producer – Florence recalled often having a tough

time getting men to take her seriously.

“I didn’t know I was a woman, I just went forward,” she described. “Sometimes I would go in a meeting and it would be all men and I’d say something and my partner (a man) would repeat it because they wouldn’t take it from me.”

Films and television shows that she packaged or produced included: The Shari Show; Damn Yankees; The Making Of Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid; The Secret Night Caller; and Hungry Wives.

While packaging Butch Cassidy (one of two films she worked on that won Emmy awards), Florence said that she and its star Robert Redford formed a friendship and that she even attended the Academy Awards the year he won his Oscar.

Back in those days, she recalled, even when she wasn’t at an awards show, she was always dressed to the nines.

“I always wore hats and gloves in those days, and high heels,” she recalled.

But the most important elements in her life remained the stories that captivated her mostly dramas - as well as the time spent with family and friends, most of whom have now passed on.

When she first settled in Beverly Hills four score ago, she remembered it as being a particularly charming small city. The train left shortly after she came and there were vastly fewer people in town then there are today.

Almost daily, she said, she would go up to Chasen’s for its chili.

“When I first moved here, it was completely different,” she described. “It was cleaner. And it was very friendly. I don’t know if people are as friendly now. It was a small town. And coming from New York, it was a smaller town. I loved the weather and it was great for making pictures.”

The Vendor and all subcontractors shall furnish certified payroll records as required pursuant to Labor Code section 1776 directly to the Department of Industrial Relations (“DIR”) in accordance with Labor Code section 1771.4 on at least a monthly basis (or more frequently if required by the District or the DIR) and in a format prescribed by the DIR. Monitoring and enforcement of the prevailing wage laws and related requirements will be performed by the DIR/Labor Commissioner/Department of Labor Standards Enforcement (DLSE). Refer to SB854 and PWC100 (form) for further clarification.

It is not necessarily BHUSD’s intent to obtain the lowest possible cost, but rather the best possible value. BHUSD will make its selection after assessing the quality of the proposed products, services, performance reliability, standardization, lifecycle costs, delivery timetables, support logistics, manufacturer’s warranties, as well as the cost of the products and services. The results of BHUSD’s evaluation and ranking of the Vendor Proposals will be final. BHUSD may, after a finding is made by the governing board that a particular procurement qualifies under all requirements, authorize the procurement of the product through competitive negotiation.

Pursuant to Public Contract Code Section 20118.2, the District is not required to award a contract to the lowest Proposer but rather will consider Proposals based on criteria established herein this RFP. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Thanks to the City Council for encouraging The Wanda Group to paint the barricade surrounding the 9900 Wilshire project.

Unfortunately, there is no barricade art, but at least it no longer looks like a housing project from the Bronx. Although it does violate our codes for signage multiple times, it is an amazing improvement.

Again, I am pleading with the council to get a completion bond before any work starts. Since it is not in the development agreement, the council could pass an ordinance on projects of over $50 million to have completion bonds prior to starting any work which could alter the project in a permanent manner.

There are so many reasons why Wanda might pour concrete with no intention to finish, that it is frightening. I think after that first pour, its entitlements may be locked in which I don’t feel is best for the City, Only a minor amount of money might be

paid and the project could sit fallow for years.

For the Beverly Hills North Homeowners’ Association, this is a defining issue how this situation is handled.

Nancy Krasne ****** Regarding the Rent Stabilization workshops article in the Courier last week, it was reported that landlords’ attendance at the last meeting doubled that of renters.

Who could be surprised at that? If renters show up and are seen by their landlords or their landlords ‘’get wind of’’ their active approval of the present rent control, it will put those renters in a precarious position with their landlord!

The law that was passed by Beverly Hills City Council last January is an extremely important protection for residents as we have seen our rents increase–both rapidly and dramatically–to heights pushing us out of our apartments. Please see the gravity of this situation and leave the current 3-percent controlled increase in place! Barbara Childs

Buddy Guy To Take The Saban Stage Thursday Five-Time Grammy Award winner, legendary Blues artist and Blues Hall of Famer Buddy Guy will present a concert Thursday, July 27 at The Saban Theatre.

Guy, a pioneer of the Chicago blues sound, has served as an influence to some of the most notable musician of his generation, including Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Ranked 30th in Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the “200 Greatest Guitarists of All-Time,” Guy is known for his showmanship on stage: playing his guitar with drumsticks or strolling through the audience while playing solos.

The show starts at 7:45 p.m with an opening set by Quinn Sullivan.

Rabin Assassination Subject Of Ford Presentation The third event in Ford Theatres’ IGNITE@theFORD! series is Yitzhak Rabin: Chronicle Of An Assassination at 8:30 p.m., Sunday, July 23 at the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre, 2580 Cahuenga Blvd. East, Hollywood.

In 1995, Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, the architect of the Oslo Accords, was assassinated. Acclaimed Israeli filmmaker Amos Gitai blends the words of Rabin’s widow, Leah, with live music and projections as a theatrical counterpoint to his 2015 investigative film Rabin, The Last Day. Seated at either end of a table, two actresses (Einat Weizman and Sarah Adler) read from Leah’s memoirs. Together, they travel back through time to explore the violence that led to Rabin’s assassination, traumatizing a country and sending shockwaves around the world.

Adding a lyrical presence is live music by pianist Edna Stern, playing the preludes of Johann Sebastian Bach; soprano Keren Motseri, performing reminiscences of György Kurtág (Kafka frag-

KCET Launches Environmental Film Festival KCET public television station and independent satellite network Link TV nationwide, will launch the Earth Focus Environmental Film Festival from 10 a.m.-9 p.m., Saturday, July 29 at the Egyptian Theatre, 6712 Hollywood Blvd., L.A. The free event is open to the public featuring five films throughout the day tackling the most relevant global environmental issues today including Water & Power: A California Heist, Rise: Sacred Water- Standing Rock, Tomorrow and The Age of Consequences.

Celebrity environmental activists including filmmaker/actor Raphael Sbarge (Once Upon A Time, Murder In The First), actor Ed Begley Jr. (Ghostbusters, St. Elsewhere), actor Patrick Fabian

(Better Call Saul) and actress Sharon Lawrence (Queen Sugar, NYPD Blue) will introduce each film that will be followed by post-screening dialogues with the filmmakers.

Partnering closely on the event is the Washington, D.C.-based Environmental Film Festival in the Nation’s Capital.

The Earth Focus Environmental Film Festival is also in partnership with American Cinematheque, Deadline, and sponsors that include Green Wish, a grassroots nonprofit that helps other local nonprofit green organizations fund projects for their communities.
