THE WALK TO BEVERLY HILLS HIGH SCHOOL–Beverly Hills Mayor Lili Bosse took around 200 people to visit the City’s high school as part of her weekly “Walk With The Mayor.” Bosse, a Beverly Hills High School alumna, has been a tireless advocate for a strong partnership between the City and Beverly Hills schools. Over the next decade, Beverly Hills schools will be getting a make-over to create world-class learning facilities that serve a 21st century world as part of an extensive school building bond. On Monday, Beverly Hills schools will welcome some 4,300 students when classes resume. “It’s absolutely a different time in education and we have to change with it,” Superintendent Gary Woods said on Wednesday during the opening day program where he welcomed hundreds of teachers, administrators and staff to the 2014/15 academic year. “We educators have to be the ones that ensure our system is full of possibility for those young eager learners who are coming our way.” Courier Photo by Laura Coleman

By Laura Coleman Beverly Hills teachers are on track to become the highest paid in L.A. County as a result of an innovative bargaining agreement that ties raises to property tax increases. The Board of Education is voting this morning on the union-ratified contract for the Beverly Hills Education Association (BHEA) Certificated Unit, which includes a 5.16 percent raise for the roughly 300 certificated employees in the BHUSD for 2014/15. “I feel like we’re forging a real partnership,” Boardmember Lisa Korbatov said. “At the (see ‘BEVERLY HILLS TEACHERS’ page 18)
Family Of Officer Killed In May City Council Orders Metro Trousdale Crash Sues City Construction During Day
By Matt Lopez As reported last week by The Courier, the Beverly Hills City Council at a special meeting on Tuesday is set to once again vote on an 11 percent salary increase over two years for Beverly Hills City Employees.
By Victoria Talbot The Beverly Hills City Council inched toward final approval of a permit for the relocation of underground utilities associated with the Westside Subway Extension Tuesday with a decision that work should be done primarily during the day, rather than at night. The decision comes amidst contentious disagreement over the proposed Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the City and Metro.
The vote comes on the heels of the employee bargaining units declining a larger, 13-percent salary raise, just weeks ago during negotiations. The catch for the employees was that the 13-percent increase (see ‘CITY SALARIES’ page 17)
Seniors Sound Off On Beverly Hills Taxi Cab Services By Matt Lopez As Beverly Hills moves toward a taxi cab franchise agreement, City officials got significant community feedback about the taxi service currently available in the City at a special community meeting on Wednesday. Most, but not all, of the feed-
back was negative at the Roxbury Park meeting attended by about 20 seniors and disabled residents. Horror stories of alleged bad service provided by the existing companies were shared, as well as complaints about the City’s Senior & Disabled Transit Service (see ‘BEVERLY HILLS CABS’ page 16)
The two options, day or night work, were presented for the construction work hours for the relocation of underground utilities adjacent to Wilshire from La Cienega to San Vicente Boulevard. The final decision will be incorporated in the MOA, to be returned to the City Council for consideration Aug. 19 and for the authorization to issue permits for utility relocation. A plan to work primarily at night was rejected because of (see ‘METRO PERMITS’ page 17)
