The college is the Army’s highest level of education for senior officers, with graduates such as John Pershing, Dwight Eisenhower, George Patton, Omar Bradley and Norman Schwarzkopf. A graduate of UCLA and Loyola Law School, he practices entertainment and business litigation in Century City with the international law firm of Greenberg Traurig. He is also an officer in the U.S. Army Reserve, and was deployed to Iraq in 2008 as a judge advocate and awarded the Bronze Star. Upon his return, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and intends to continue work helping homeless vets, while remaining ready for further military duty.

Beverly Hills Industrial Zone Considered As Potential Site For New Luxury Hotel By Matt Lopez The Beverly Hills City Council took a “wait and see” approach Tuesday to the idea of allowing a luxury hotel to be built in the City’s “Industrial Zone.”

North Crescent Drive Residents Haggle Over Potential Permit Parking Implementation By Matt Lopez A group of Crescent Drive residents looking to implement permit parking on their street saw some unexpected pushback from neighbors at last Thursday’s Traffic and Parking

ate the bond sale and asked the school board to send it to a public vote on the November ballot. The deadline to add it as a November ballot measure is Aug. 9. On June 26, the Beverly Hills School Board voted 4-1 (with Brian Goldberg dissenting) to accelerate the payback rate of the $334 million Measure E bond. That decision could cause Beverly Hills property taxes to rise up to $114 per $100,000 of assessed value for the 2013/14 year. All five councilmembers stated their opposition to that decision and said the decision on whether or not to accelerate the bond should go to the voters. Only Mirisch, however, was willing to support the resolution. “I do believe when you make a campaign promise, it is sacred. I firmly stand by that,” Vice Mayor Lili Bosse said, adding that she personally didn’t support the school board’s decision, but didn’t see a need for the resolution. “We have all individually stated how we feel about this issue. To me, having a formal resolution if there is no endgame… there is nothing to be gained by this res-

Mirisch said the most important part of the resolution for him was simply asking that the decision be sent out for a vote. “Don’t accelerate without voter approval. Examples of a department head would be police chief, fire chief, director of public works and director of community services. Currently, as is the case in most cities with a council-manager form of government, City Manager Jeff Kolin has the authority to recruit and hire department heads. Mirisch has said his reason for the request is not to take power from Kolin, but to allow more community involvement into the hiring process of important City officials. Traditionally, a two-member council ad-hoc committee meets vets prospective hires during the process, although that is not currently formalized in any sort of City code. The council will re-agendize the item and discuss how to deal with employee retention at a future meeting. “I don’t think he’s an adequate replacement for Coach Fisher,” Coleman said. The position has been vacant since June, when the administration failed to renew coach Jeff Fisher’s contract for another year, despite a successful legacy of having coached BHHS runners for four seasons, which included numerous trips to the CIF and State Championships. “I have to trust our administrative leaders to make the right decision,” Goldberg said.

Anthony-Kerry House On North Bedford DriveNamed 14th Beverly Hills Local Landmark By Matt Lopez Make way for another landmark property in Beverly Hills. On Tuesday, the Beverly Hills City Council approved the Anthony-Kerry House at 910 N. Bedford Dr. as the 14th local historic landmark in Beverly Hills. The property has been added to the local register of historic places. The two-story home was constructed in 1909 by famed architects Charles and Henry

Greene. It was originally located close to Wilshire Boulevard in a then-fashionable neighborhood near downtown Los Angeles, but moved to Beverly Hills less than 20 years later. The home bears all the similarities to the Greene Brothers’ Craftsman-style architecture. “It really is the high point of the Craftsman style and we have it right here in Beverly Hills,” City Urban Planner Bill Crouch said.

Leslie Dixon, owner of the home, has worked hard to keep it in its original form. “The Greene Brothers were considered the Frank Lloyd Wright of the Craftsman movement in Southern California,” Dixon said. “This is one of only two homes on the Westside they created. This one still looks like the homes in Pasadena, inside and out. I’ve put quite a bit of my soul into protecting it.”

Hurdles Keep Rising For Proposed Millennium Hollywood High Rise Skyscraper Project

(CNS) Opponents of a planned Hollywood skyscraper development accused Los Angeles city officials this week of covering up the possibility of an active earthquake fault under the project site, and called for an independent panel of experts to oversee a new seismic study. Two weeks after the L.A. City Council signed off on the Millennium Hollywood development, which would include 39- and 35-story skyscrapers flanking the Capitol Records

building, opponents of the project continued blasting the plans, threatening a lawsuit in the coming weeks. Faced with criticism about a previous study which showed no earthquake risks, the New York-based developer, Millennium Partners, agreed to do a new study that would involve digging a trench under the project site. Robert Silverstein, an attorney for several dozen neighborhood council and homeowner groups opposing the

project, called the proposed study into question, saying city leaders should instead form a ``panel of neutral experts'” to conduct the new study. Silverstein said the outside panel is needed because of what he called a “cover-up” at city hall. The attorney said emails show city officials knew in 2012 about the project's potential proximity to an earthquake fault, but failed to disclose the concerns in the environmental impact report approved by the L.A. City Council.

On Friday, a four-monthlong closure of the Sunset Boulevard off ramp on the northbound 405 Freeway began its four-month shut down, adding to traffic woes that the already over-clogged arterial way is known for. “While it’s painful, there is a light at the end of the closures,” Metro spokesman Dave Sotero told The Courier. Once finished, the $1.15 billion 405 project will boast the nation’s longest continuous HOV Lane, extending from Orange County to Mission Hills.

In the past, that would have been handled by an ad hoc committee. One reason for the interest in the 9268 Third St. location is because of the proposed sale of the post office, which sits adjacent to the property. The staff report said Sonnenblick is among those who have responded to the post office request for bids. “It’s a sensitive piece of land, so let’s open up the process so there’s public involvement as to what we do there,” Mirisch said.

For example, Wicked, greatly favored to beat Avenue Q, ostensibly lost thanks to a terrific PR stunt: a pizza party hosted by the puppets. And perhaps one of the strangest and most unlikely shows ever to be nominated in the Best Musical category, The Lieutenant, was a rock opera about Lt. William Calley who led the My Lai massacre during the Vietnam War. It only lasted a mere nine performances and yet it was also nominated for Best Score, Best Book and Best Actor in a Musical!

r yet again, there’s the case of David Merrick, the legendary producer who ruled the Main Stem from the1950s to the 1980s, and was labeled “The Beast of Broadway” and “The Abominable Showman,” earned only two Best Musical Tonys? It makes me wonder if there are times when personality does count.

UCLA Seeking Volunteers For Study OF IBS And Mindfulness Training UCLA researchers are seek ing adults (ages 18 to 50) with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) for a study aimed at identifying and evaluating the effects of a mindfulness program on brain biomarkers and symptoms of IBS. Volunteers will receive a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to identify IBS biomarkers and participate in an eight-week Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction training program. According to researchers, MBSR programs have been

‘Purging’ Stem Cells May Help Child Cancer Patients Judith Villablanca, M.D., of The Saban Research Institute of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA), Susan Kreissman, M.D., of Duke University Medical Center, and colleagues reported the results of a randomized, phase 3 clinical trial conducted by the Children’s Oncology Group examining the effect of selectively removing (purging) tumor cells from blood stem cells before they are transplanted back into patients with highrisk neuroblastoma following high-dose chemotherapy. This is the first randomized trial looking at the effect of tumor selective stem-cell purging on patient outcome. The study was published online last month in Lancet Oncology.

Neuroblastoma is the second most common solid tumor in children. Half of all children diagnosed with this condition have high-risk disease, meaning they are less responsive to treatment and have less than a 50 percent chance of survival. Standard treatment includes a course of high-dose chemotherapy because it is more effective at killing tumor cells, however, it also kills the normal blood-forming cells in the bone marrow. To mitigate this effect, some immature blood cells (called peripheral blood stem cells or PBSC) are removed before the child is treated with high-dose (see ‘PURGING’ page 15)

McAfee Named CEO Of Keck USC Foundation Thomas McAfee, M.D., dean of clinical affairs at UC San Diego Health Sciences, has been appointed the CEO of the newly forming Keck Medicine of USC Medical Foundation. He begins his new role on Sept. 3. A key initiative identified as part of the clinical enterprisewide strategic plan was the development of a community medical foundation, intended to add primary and specialty practices into the Keck Medicine network. “As CEO of the new foundation, Dr. McAfee will play a key role in developing the health system’s physician alignment strategy,” said Shawn Sheffield, chief strategy and system development officer for Keck Medicine of USC. “A critical function will be to establish the foundation and attract marquee groups and physicians to affiliate with Keck Medicine of USC.” The foundation model in development will be the Keck Medicine of USC home for acquired physician practices, enabling the enterprise to provide a comprehensive range of health services in a broader geographic footprint. Signs That Your Child Is Taking Too Much On Dr. Fran: My 9-year-old spends a lot of time alone in his room recently. He doesn’t want play dates and doesn’t seem his usual self. I think he may be signed up for too many different summer camps and extra classes. Can you share 4-5 signs that your child might be doing too much/taking too much on? William Z. A. Dear William: It’s really good that you are asking this important question. In their desire to give their children an enriched summer, many sign their kids up to attend a few different types of day camps. I always advise against this because it can be overwhelming to get to know your peer group, make a friend and establish your social position and then have to start all over two weeks later. It’s too much for any kid to have to transition that many times. Here are a few of the things to look out for as indicators that your child may be doing too much. 1. Any change in sleeping or eating patterns. 2. Mood changes including increased anxiety, depression, or worried states may be a sign of overload. 3. Social isolation. If your child stays in her room, doesn’t want to go on play dates, or hang out at the mall with friends this is cause for concern. 4. If your child states he has taken on too much or is overwhelmed, pay close attention and take his words seriously. When a child (or adult) is sad, unhappy or depressed; it is common to see sleep disruption and increase

Dr. Fran Walfish Answers Your Questions or decrease in appetite. These are signs for parents to look for in a child who may be doing too much. Some kids can’t express their feelings directly to their parents. Instead, we see these children suppress their emotions and eventually we can observe a change in their mood. It is extremely important to have open dialogue and communication with your child. When children aredepressed, they tend to isolate themselves and not want to be around other kids or adults. Some are able to articulate their feelings directly to their parents. Moms and Dads, pay attention. Listen to your children’s voices and respond with compassion and empathy. Offer to make changes to insure success in the activities your child chooses to remain committed to. The best way to ensure your child’s life is balanced and manageable is to include him or her in the planning process. Don’t force the unwanted activity upon your child. Today, kids are overbooked with karate, art classes, tutors, music, sports, and drama classes. Most kids come into my office in the afternoons, throw themselves onto my couch and complain about how tired

they are. They simply crave quiet time. Give your child choices of activities acceptable to you. Let him or her choose no more than two extra activities per week and help them followthrough with the commitment to the finish line. Many parents bring their kids to my office complaining that they drop out of group activities and do not stick it out to the end. It is important to help your child follow-through on commitments. Naturally, there are a few exceptions, but in general help your child stay until the series is completed. There is a wonderful feeling of selfaccomplishment when you complete an activity from start to finish. The reason simply playing and “being kids” is important is to allow their imaginations to develop and grow. Organized activities usually follow a protocol and do not provide opportunities to enhance a person's imagination. Our use of imagination helps us create in our mind’s eye a vision of forward motion and development of our life goals and dreams. Just “being kids” also builds social skills when playing in the neighborhood with friends. Every human being needs time to relax and that is also why simply playing is important for children.

chemotherapy and then re-infused after treatment. This procedure is called an autologous peripheral blood stem-cell transplant. Since neuroblastoma often spreads into the blood and bone marrow, stem cells collected for transplant may be mixed with tumor cells. It was not known if removing tumor cells from the stem cells would change the outcome for patients. To find out, Robert Seeger, MD, Patrick Reynolds, MD, PhD and their team at CHLA, developed a technique for removing or “purging” the tumor cells from the blood stem cells. This technique involved using antibodies that attached the tumor cells to magnetic beads, and then were removed using strong magnets. Purging stem cells as well as the high dose chemotherapy regimen used in this study were both first piloted in a prior multi-center trial led by CHLA and chaired by Dr. Villablanca.

Good Shepherd Cantor Now Starring In Nine David Michael Treviño is having a good time combining the sacred and the secular. A cantor at Beverly Hill’s Church of the Good Shepherd, he’s also starring in the current DOMA Theatre Co. production of the musical Nine at the MET Theatre, in the lead role of Guido Contini. The production has won rave reviews. While Treviño, 51, moved from Texas to California to pursue an acting career, church singing for him goes hand in hand. His love of music started early. “My mom says that when I was a baby I would bounce around to the Beatles,” Treviño

relates. And he’s been singing in c h u r c h choirs since the sixth grade. “It’s very grounding,’ David Michael Treviño Treviño adds, “and it’s great to be able to use the gift I believe God gave me to give back to the community.” Treviño’s been a cantor at the City’s Catholic church since June 2002. The joy, says Treviño, is that “everybody in the church is the mass–not just the priest celebrating. Everyone has gift to

bring. I look at my role as a ministry and get to participate.” Whether it’s the stage or the sanctuary, Treviño says: “it’s all about the singing. He had contacted “every private school in Atlanta,” says Mel Cohen, looking for someone to teach a group that was constantly touring. Cohen met with Motown reps and was able to find qualified teachers and supply an accredited education for the boy band. “We’re in the ‘yes’ business,” said Mel Cohen. Jan Cohen, with a master’s degree in education, was a teacher in Atlanta’s prestigious The Lovett School and wondering if she wanted to “be a teacher there forever or start my own business.” So in 1977, she talked to friends

and started tutoring in their home “just helping students” with speed reading and study skills. Their success with more and more students, led the couple to found their own school, the Atlanta Country Day School (ACDS) in 1996. Serving students in grades 7-12, the school has a limited enrollment of 50, with four to six students in a class. “They love it,” says Jan Cohen. And students attend 12 months of the year. And a student’s relationship with the school doesn't have to end at high school. Through arrangements with colleges like Brigham Young University, students can earn independent study and college credits. “There are a lot of options,” says Mel Cohen. who has overseen the leadership program for roughly a decade, to continue to helm the program after three motions to restructure the position failed. “This is probably the second hardest decision we’ve had to make as a board,” Board VP Noah Margo said on Tuesday. “It obviously is not a successful leadership program.” Following last spring's annual ASB trip to San Diego to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, over 30 ASB students received disciplinary actions ranging from detention to fiveday suspensions as a result of various infractions that happened under Newman's supervision, including alcohol consumption and curfew violation. President Jake Manaster said he was very disappointed that a leadership program didn’t bring about leadership. “This isn’t an easy decision,” he said. “The amount of embarassment that this has brought our community cannot be diminished.” On Tuesday, the board unanimously voted to allow Newman to take a 2/5 leave of absence from teaching English, but voted down reassigning her from her 3/5 ASB teaching position to English. “Reassigning our current ASB teacher back to English does not solve the problem,” said Boardmember Lewis Hall, who emphasized that such a

decision was fiscally irresponsible in light of the high school’s already overstaffed English department. Hall, Manaster and Boardmember Lisa Korbatov all voted down the proposal that would have definitely ousted Newman from leading ASB. “What happened in San Diego was unfortunate, but the administration is taking more of a vindictive approach to dealing with this,” Hall told The Courier after the meeting. Superintendent Gary Woods said that the administration’s decision is not disciplinary, but rather reflects a commitment to restructuring ASB. Former schoolboard student member Jason Friedman, who was among the group of ASB students on the spring trip, urged the board to allow Newman to continue in her capacity. “Newman positively impacts students,” he said. Boardmember Goldberg said that although the board’s vote might give the appearance that Newman’s position with ASB would remain “status quo” and she would lead the class on Wednesday when school resumes, it was “not necessarily” the case. Today, the board is expected to once again take up the issue in closed session in anticipation of Tuesday’s upcoming formal board meeting.

He says it like it is, references all of it, and works hard at keeping our community well informed. I’m a Beverly Hills’ girl. I grew up in this City. In the ‘50s and ‘60s, this was was truly a village. Now, I feel like we’re living in a Metropolitan city. Buildings are going higher, parking is expensive, and we have some 12 hotels in a five-square mile area. Thanks to Clif, we are updated, in depth, as to any new developments. He is against the MTA subway to be built under our high school. The last City Council had a majority vote, and they were okay with it. I don’t know of a high school that has a subway running under it. The complications and politics in this City are huge. THE SILENT KILLING OF CHRISTIANS By David Suissa The Middle East may be a raging wildfire, but the eyes of the world are on the revival of the Israeli-Palestinian peace dance — that all-toofamiliar game where the Jewish state makes concessions (such as releasing terrorists) for the privilege of talking to an enemy who demonizes Jews, glorifies terrorists and has already rejected three peace offers. It’s a testament to the general success of the Israeli state that after returning from 10 days there, I am a lot more concerned with what’s happening in the rest of the Middle East. After the heady promise of the Arab Spring two years ago, the situation in the Middle East is now more like the Arab Volcano — with sectarian violence erupting in many areas and the Iranian nuclear threat hovering like a dark force. Instead of unleashing the power of democracy, the Arab Spring has cooked up a lethal brew of festering hatred, economic misery and vicious power struggles. In contrast to that chaos, Israel feels like Club Med. But hidden in all the chaos is a monstrous injustice that has received very little media attention: The rampant persecution of Christians. “Few people realize that we are today living through the largest persecution of Christians in history,” Bruce Thornton, research fellow at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution, wrote on the institute’s Web site. “Estimates of the numbers of Christians under assault range from 100 [million] to 200 million. According to one estimate, a Christian is martyred every five minutes.” It’s odd prominent Christians like President Barack Obama and Pope Francis have been utterly silent about this humanitarian tragedy. As Kirsten Powers wrote recently in USA Today, German Chancellor Angela Merkel asserted late last year that “Christianity is the most persecuted religion in the world,” while former French President Nicholas Sarkozy warned in a 2011 speech that “Christians face a particularly wicked program of cleansing in the Middle East, religious cleansing.” The Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg told Powers “he is shocked that American Christians aren’t regularly protesting outside of embassies drawing attention to this issue,” and he called the persecution of Christians in the Middle East “one of the most undercovered stories in international news.” One Christian who is certainly not keeping quiet is Raymond Ibrahim, a Shillman Fellow at the David Horowitz Freedom Center and associate fellow of the Middle East Forum. In a review of Ibrahim’s new book, Crucified Again: Exposing Islam’s New War On Christians, Thornton writes that Ibrahim, who is fluent in Arabic: “has been tracking what he calls ‘one of the most dramatic stories’ of our time in the reports and witnesses that appear in Arabic newspapers, news shows, and websites, but that rarely get translated into English or picked up by the Western press.” Most of this persecution, according to the book, is by Muslims: “Of the top 50 countries persecuting Christians, 42 have either a Muslim majority or have sizable Muslim populations.” By documenting “hundreds of specific examples from across the Muslim world,” Thornton adds, Ibrahim “shows the extent of the persecution, and forestalls any claims that it is a marginal problem.”
