Bill Blass Dismisses Women's Design Staff Having canceled its September show, Bill Blass Limited has dismissed women's designer Jeffrey Monteiro and the rest of his nine-person team.
With 90 percent of the spring 2013 collection completed and about $250,000 worth of Italian fabrics in the company's Fifth Avenue offices, staffers were surprised by the decision to cancel the show. Stylist George Cortina, whose day job is fashion director for Japanese Vogue, had already been paid in full, one source said. The venue, the Union League Club, had also been secured, as had the production company and a public relations firm.

WWD Tod's Posts Double-Digit Growth in Half Tod’s Group on Wednesday reported a double-digit increase in first half net income on the back of strong sales at the namesake brand, increased demand for its shoes and bags in America and China and an “improvement” in the group’s tax rate. Tod’s — home also to Hogan, Fay and Roger Vivier — said net income in the first six months increased 13.7 percent to $96.5 million, as sales increased 9.8 percent $626.1 million. The company said its tax rate decreased by 300 basis points compared with January to June 2011 “mainly due to the higher incidence of foreign sales on the group’s turnover.” 333 N. Rodeo Dr. WWD

this day, people remain confused and concerned about what happened with the killing of publicist Ronni Chasen. A victim of a random robbery or a hit?” asks Barbara Schroeder, the Emmywinning co-author with Clark Fogg of their informative and entertaining Beverly Hills Confidential, A Century Of Stars, Scandals And Murders. Published by our local Angel City Press, the pub date’s scheduled for late August. However, this beautifully packaged “tour guide” of crime and mystery, designed by art director Hilary Lentini, is available on Amazon and at Barnes and Noble.

A former law enforcement officer, Clark’s conducted more than thirty thousand crime scene investigations. “According to police, the killer was Harold Martin Smith,” the authors write. “A blabbermouth who couldn’t resist bragging to acquaintances that he was the guy who killed ‘that blonde lady’ in all those news reports. The bullets in his gun matched those found in Ronni Chasen.” Clark stands 100 percent convinced, and details the gruesome facts surrounding Ronni’s violent murder in an explanatory chapter.

CHLA Celebrates ‘Special Relationship’ With Britain At the London Olympics, the British have built leading teams in men’s gymnastics and rowing, but across the pond in L.A., they have also formed an impressive clinical and scientific research team at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA). “The ‘special relationship’ between UK healthcare research and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles is thriving,” says David Warburton, DSc, M.D., who was named an officer of the “Most Excellent Order of the British Empire” by the Princess Royal, acting on behalf of Her Majesty the Queen for services to UK/USA health care research in 2009. Warburton is director of developmental biology and regenerative medicine in CHLA’s Saban Research Institute. “At present we have several UK scientific groups actively collaborating and/or coming to the institute for advanced training,” Warburton said. The group includes: • Edwin Jesudason, M.D., FRCS, reader in surgery (associate professor) from the University of Liverpool, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, is presently in the third year of a Medical Research Council secondment to the Developmental Biology and Regenerative Medicine Program at the Saban Institute, collaborating with Warburton and colleagues. His work on calcium signaling and airway branching and peristalsis looks set to make several important breakthroughs in fixing fetal lung growth as well as asthma. • Valeria Solari, M.D., MRCS, medical research Council fellow in surgery, also in the third year of her research pro-

gram with Yves DeClerck in the Cancer Biology Program is making strides on characterizing the function of sugars in the stem cell niche. This new approach to cancer biology may yield important mechanistic and scientific insights. • Daniela Riccardi, Ph.D., and Paul Kemp, DPhil, both professors in the Department of Physiology at the University of Cardiff are frequent visitors and collaborators at the Saban. Their work with Brenda Finney, postdoctoral fellow at the University of Birmingham and Warburton has provided insights into the function of the calcium receptor in the lung; and new directions point toward a critical interaction with the cystic fibrosis membrane
conductance regulator gene. • Panagiotis “Panos” Maghsoudlou, an M.D., Ph.D. graduate student from the Institute for Child Health at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital (GOS), University College, London has been working with Tracy Grikscheit and colleagues to optimize tissue engineering solutions for short gut syndrome in infants. • Edward Carter, a graduate student at the University of Bath has been to the Saban recently to learn important technology for examining the function of interesting, but bizarre sounding genes such as slug, snail and slit in developing and defending the gas diffusion surface of the lung. • Henri Ford, M.D., vice
president and chief of surgery, and colleagues in CHLA’ Department of Surgery, have a long-standing collaboration in tele-surgery with GOS. Several leading members of the medical staff at CHLA were either born and educated in UK and/or received critical training at formative stages of their careers including: Jonathan Finlay M.D., FRCP, Marvin Nelson, M.D. (Queen’s Square), Philip Stanley, M.D., FRCR (Barts), Warburton (St Thomas’s and Royal Brompton Hospitals) and Randall Wetzel, MB,BS (Durham University and Royal Brompton Hospital). Additionally, Alex Judkins, M.D. was recently elected a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh.
Cancer Support Community Sets Events For Patients, Families The Cancer Support Community-Benjamin Center is offering two activities in Beverly Hills that are free to cancer patients, families and caregivers with no RSVPs required for either. • Every Tuesday and Thursday from 10:30 a.m. at Roxbury Park, 471 S. Roxbury Dr., it is Qigong, a Chinese healing tradition with instruction and brain-cancer survivor Michael Sieverts. Quigong is a method of strengthening body, mind and spirit and has been used to improve health for centuries by using slow and easy movements which almost anyone can do. Those wishing to participate are advised to wear comfortable clothing. • Then on the second and
fourth Tuesdays of each month from 2 to 4 p.m., a workshop called “Triple Dose Stress Reduction” is held at Tower Hematology Oncology, 9090 Wilshire Blvd. (third Floor). This incorporates simple relaxation techniques, expressive writing and interactive group support and is led by Malcolm Schultz, LMFT, a leader in mind/body cancerrelated care for the past 25 years. Parking is validated. For information on other free-to-the-public programs and events of the Cancer Support Community-Benjamin Center, whose mission is to ensure all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge and strengthened by action, visit: www.cancersupportcommunitybenjamincenter.org.

Seminar Set
The Art of Living will present a free seminar, “Mind and Meditation” at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 15 in the La Cienega Park Community Center Auditorium, 8400 Gregory Way. The health benefits of regular meditation in reducing stress are well documented. It is used more and more by elite athletes and business leaders to stay focused and relieve tension. “For me, my meditation practice not only reduces stress but often times, out of the box answers to tough situations come to me when I’m meditating. In this crazy economy it’s the only thing that has kept me sane,” says Chris Reed, CEO of NASDAQ traded Reed’s, Inc. A Bloomberg News article from 2008 on executives and meditation includes executives from Ford, Google, Monsanto, Pepsi and Goldman Sachs. The foundation is an educational and humanitarian non-profit, teaching programs in well-being, stress management and meditation in Los Angeles and more than 150 countries. Aging can be reversed, at least in the immune system, says Dr. Doron Melamed, professor in immunology at The Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa. And research he’s taking part in may have implications for other parts of the body as well. That’s the message Melamed shared Wednesday night at the home of residents Joan and Arnold Seidel. Melamed is traveling around the country visiting supporters of the Institute, sponsored by the American Technion Society, the leading organization supporting higher education in Israel, with offices around the country. As people age, Melamed says, the immune system declines. This means more illnesses among the elderly, inability to respond to vaccinations, decreased mobility and related rising health-care costs. A reason for the decline, Melamed reports, is that the body stops making B lymphocytes, responsible for the production of antibodies. At the same time, the body accumulates old B cells, which have a limited and reduced response capability. This accumulation prevents generation of new cells, and function is reduced, Melamed adds. Melamed found that chang-

ing this process works on the principle of supply and demand. The bone marrow, Melamed relates, is like “a little factory” creating new cells. It stops making new cells with aging, not because it accumulates defects, but because there is no demand. So he and his fellow researchers created the demand. They killed off the old cells using antibodies specifically designed for the job. To overcome the deficiency, the body re-activated the
Health Happenings... Center Offers Free Cancer Screenings Free colon and prostate cancer testing is being offered every Friday in August at the Beverly Hills Cancer Center, 8900 Wilshire Blvd. Testing will include: 1) Men: PSA blood test for prostate cancer 2) Men and women: Stool occult blood test for colon cancer The tests take about 15 minutes and results are back in four-five days. “We would like to get the word out to educate and raise awareness in as many people as possible about cancer screening. Prostate and colon cancer if caught early enough, can be cured or controlled,” said Dr. Ari Gabayan of the
Beverly Hills Cancer Center. Reported statistics on the cancers include: • Estimated new cases and deaths from prostate cancer in the U.S. in 2012: New cases: 241,740; deaths: 28,170. • Estimated new cases and deaths from colon and rectal cancer in the U.S. this year: New cases: 103,170 (colon); 40,290 (rectal); deaths: 51,690 (colon and rectal combined) The center also offers pet and laughter therapy. bone marrow, forcing it to produce B cells again. The result was a revival in cell generation “that caused a wave of new cells leaving the bone marrow and going to the whole body where the demand was, and rejuvenating it. So now we have new cells everywhere and enhanced immunity,” Melamed says. The early studies were performed on mice and have now moved into the human phase, Melamed reports. The clinical study, in collaboration with the hematology department of Rambam Med-
ical Center in Haifa, is administering the antibodies to cancer patients through an IV. “What we’re looking at,” says Melamed, “is whether the generation of new cells and response now is better than that in healthy people who have not gone through such a procedure. “Before our work, people thought bone marrow couldn’t make new cells,” Melamed says. Early reports of the research were reported last January in the scientific journal Blood, and major publications have named this new approach as among the top 10 breakthroughs in anti-aging. “What we actually tried to show,” says Melamed, “is a proof of principle that at least some of our tissues can be rejuvenated.” This doesn’t mean that people won’t age, of course, but that people could age more healthfully, Melamed admits, with reduced frequency of infectious diseases, improved quality of life and reduced health-care costs. He sees implications in the research for treating cancer (“a reflection of a poor immune system”), muscular dystrophy and other conditions. —Steve Simmons

Joan Mangum The Concern Foundation for Cancer Research raised a near record $1.5+ million at this year’s Block Party in Paramount Studios’ back lot. The theme “Oh What a Night” celebrated the 60th anniversary of the birth of rock and roll, brought people to their feet dancing to the tunes of those times played by the Tom Nolan Band, The Wonderelles, DJ Dwayne and the local rockers House Fire. Dancers, singers, car hops and huluhoopers entertained throughout the evening. This year’s honoree was Lance Freed, president of Rondor Music Publishing (Universal Music Publishing Group), and son of famed deejay Alan Freed, widely credited with coining the term “rock and roll” to describe the records he played in 1951 on Cleveland’s WJW. Calling himself “the Moondog,” his 1952 Moondog Coronation Ball in Cleveland is cited by historians as the nation’s first rock and roll concert. Concern President Derek Albert, himself a former music industry executive, announced that more than 3,500 were on hand to enjoy the 50 restaurants, catering operations, cocktail, coffee, wine and dessert stations which served their signature items. Once again, Le Spa at the Sofitel Hotel was
booked all night for manicures and massages. The Brian Kramer Photo Studio sponsored by TEAM Concern and the L.A. Marathon and the 3D Cheeze Photo Studio were filled with guests taking souvenir photos to remember. Tanqueray sponsored the casino-style gambling tables which were full throughout the evening. A live auction presented by celebrity auctioneer Mar Yvette, pop culture reporter for KTTV’s Good Day, LA left lucky bidders walking off with vacation getaways featuring airline tickets provided by American Airlines. Media partner for Concern for the 8th year was Los Angeles magazine while Cadillac was, once again, a participating sponsor, displaying its new 2013 line. Since its 1968 inception, Concern Foundation has raised $46 million for cancer research and awarded funds to some 650 promising cancer researchers here and abroad. ****** The Colleagues held a special event last Saturday with an in-store appearance by Lisa M. The Bourne Legacy-Confusing Story, Non-Stop Action Once I got over the confusing coincidental fact that the film’s protagonist was named Aaron Cross (Jeremy Renner) and not James Patterson’s high profile detective/psychologist Alex Cross, I turned my attention to the dialogue. Not being a graduate of MIT, I had no idea what director Tony Gilroy and his brother Dan, were writing about so I decided to concentrate on the non-stop action. Especially when the entire Manilla police force who seemed to be employed by Treadstone, the nefarious division of the CIA and a hired gun, try to kill Alex….er, I mean, Aaron Cross. A high-powered chase ensues, with the destruction of too many cars and disposable people. The cars give way to motorcycles. Motorcyclists must be the most trusting peo-
Jerry Cutler on Film ple because there is always a key in the ignition when someone has to steal one. At any rate, a very long chase takes place and Cross and his passenger, the beautiful scientist, Dr. Marta Shearing (an energetic and endearing Rachel Weisz), miraculously hangs on to Cross as they weave in and out of traffic. In the midst of all this bedlam, bullets flying, cars careening off one another and Cross driving at high speed through a death-defying circuitous route, Shearing takes off her helmet to take an ineffective swipe at the menacing assassin. That gesture was so silly that I think it was meant as comedy relief. For
some inexplicable reason, except perhaps to release the film as a travel documentary in case it doesn’t fare well in the theaters, the action takes us from Alaska, Chicago, New York, Washington D.C., Seoul, Karachi and Manilla. Bodies are left lying everywhere without much reason or cause. I guess it’s a sign of the times. Anyway, when you come right down to it, the once proud Bourne legacy is one no more. It was, however, a noble try.

Holocaust Museum Opens Interactive ‘Tree Of Life’ Exhibit, To Remember Munich Athletes Last week, the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust (LAMOTH), the city’s only free museum dedicated exclusively to the history of the Holocaust, celebrated the grand opening of its new exhibit, “Tree of Testimony: USC Shoah Foundation Institute Interviews.” The exhibit consists of 70 video screens displaying the more than 51,000 interviews maintained in the USC Shoah Foundation Institute’s archives. The video sculpture, supported in part by a grant from the Wilf Family Foundation, occupies an entire wall of the museum. Screens of varying sizes display individual interviews. Visitors can hear the interviews on any of the screens through the museum’s award-winning audio-guide system, which is distributed free to guests. It will take an entire year for all of the thousands of interviews to be played, emphasizing the enormity of the tragedy. The video wall is the brain child of Museum Board President E. Randol Schoenberg, who conceived the installation after seeing similar exhibits at museums around the country. “I realized that if we found a way to show visitors the thousands of interviews recorded and maintained by the institute; we’d create something extraordinary. Not only would the sheer breadth of the archives and its exhibition portray the Holocaust’s scope; we’d help visitors connect directly to survivors through their testimony and create a lasting monument
to them as well,” Schoenberg said. Stand-alone computers in the Tepper Family room on the museum’s exhibit floor and in the library will allow visitors to search for particular testimonies or areas of interest. LAMOTH is at 100 S. The Grove Dr. For more information, call 323-651-3704 or visit www.lamoth.org. • Moment Of Silence LAMOTH will hold a moment of silence in memory of the 11 Israeli athletes murdered at the 1972 Munich Olympics at 3 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 12, at approximately the time when the closing ceremonies of the 2012 games in London will hit their mid-point. LAMOTH Executive Director Mark A. Rothman will lead the moment of silence at the Jewish National Fund plaque in Pan Pacific Park. The plaque is surrounded by a copse of trees planted in the victims’ honor. It is across the park from LAMOTH itself, and it lists the name of each of the Israeli athletes killed after Black September terrorists took them hostage in their dormitory rooms in the Munich Olympic village. “Our moment of silence will throw light on the shadow the International Olympic Committee cast on the London games” by not officially remembering the tragedy of 1972, said Rothman. “Otherwise, the glory of gold medals – no matter how earnestly earned – cannot brighten that shadow.”

Antonovich has consistently voted against Metro's efforts to force a tunnel under Beverly Hills High and in an exclusive interview with The Courier in last week’s issue, Antonovich criticized Metro for not being candid to the public about the Westside Subway Extension's potential to “emasculate (Beverly Hills High’s) ability to make decisions on their school.” Born Aug. 12, 1939, in Los Angeles, Antonovich grew up in his hometown and graduated from John Marshall High School. He went to college at California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA), where he earned a bachelor’s in social science and master’s degree in health science. in addition to Veilhan’s own experience with the house. For example, one of the more serene installations, entitled “Veilhan Family,” is an aluminum silhouette the artist created after living in the residence for three weeks with his family, perched at the edge of the reflecting pond overlooking the lake. Raymond Richard Neutra, the architect’s son, said growing up in the house his father built was an artistic experience. Architectones will be opened to the public through Sept. 16. Among his accomplishments, Antonovich has implemented programs to seize thousands of weapons and millions of dollars in illegal drugs, intensified enforcement efforts against repeat criminal illegal alien offenders, led efforts to streamline the adoption process for the county’s foster youth and spearheaded programs to recover abducted children. He has also received numerous awards, including the 2005 Ambassador for Peace from the Korean Veterans Association, the 2005 Foster Parent of the Year award by the Hill Toppers Auxiliary Assistance League, the 2002 Vision Award by the Performing Arts Foundation for Asian-Americans and the 2002 Good Turn Award by the Boy Scouts of America. He and his wife, Christine, have two children: Michael, Jr. and Mary Christine. The Courier wishes L.A. County Supervisor Mike Antonovich a very happy birthday!

neath the current structure. Rerouting the storm drain was previously not thought to be possible. At that meeting, Mayor Willie Brien and councilmembers Julian Gold and Barry Brucker had stated a preference for “Plan D,” one of four plans (A, B, C and D) presented to the council. Bosse and Vice Mayor John Mirisch pushed for their colleagues to consider “Plan E” before making any definite decisions. Although the “Plan E” City staff provided Tuesday wasn't exactly what Bosse had asked for (Bosse called for a design placed right on top of Roxbury's current footprint at the exact same size and dimensions, the favored option by many in the community), it got closer to the community's desire than any previous iteration of Roxbury Park. The biggest difference in “E" is that it essentially flips “Plan D” around, but that’s just the start. “E” moves the structure and places it directly on top of the existing building’s footprint. It is still about the same total square footage (19,700) as “Plan D.” “E” did however, better mimic the current structure by moving everything from the north side of the building to the south and vice versa and created a structure with a design that closely resembles the current community center. For example, in “E”, the proposed “multi-purpose” room moved from the north to the south, where it currently sits, right next to the parking lot and the area in “Plan D” that included a senior drop off point. “Plan E” did not include the senior drop off point, but Mirisch said the 5,140-squarefoot multipurpose room could be downsized to about 4,500 (still bigger than the current room), making room near the park’s main entry for a senior
drop off. Whether or not the multipurpose room should be smaller, as well as the size and scope of other rooms in the proposed design, and the interior courtyard circulation, are all topics the council unanimously agreed to continue revisiting as the design process moves forward. “Plan E is the one that in my opinion keeps the character of the park the same as it is now,” Mirisch told The Courier. “It upgrades and modernizes the facilities and hopefully it's built to last and provides us with good value for the money so we won't be in this situation again in 50, 60 years.” Brien, Brucker and Gold said while they preferred “Plan D”, thcy were comfortable enough with “E” to move forward with it. Brucker said all five councilmembers had to make concessions from their favored design plans to move forward with “E.” “It's time to move forward and stop delaying this process,” Brien said. “It sounds like all five of us agree 'E' is preferable.” Bosse stressed the importance after Tuesday's meeting of keeping the community informed as much as possible about costs for the project. “As far as I'm concerned this is an open dialogue up until we have our grand opening,” Bosse told The Courier. “We need to continue to hold public meetings so the community feels knows what's happening. I don't want the architects to draw something that we can't afford.” Bosse said resident Mickey Kaus sent her an e-mail Wednesday thanking her for getting “E” pushed forward. Kaus’ late mother Peggy worked tirelessly to protest overdevelopment and Mickey himself has been an outspoken critic of previously approved design plans, attending all of the council and liaison meetings where Roxbury was a topic of discussion. Kaus told The Courier he commended all 5 councilmembers for being able to reach a unanimous compromise that closely replicates what many in the community desire. “It's heartening to see; (Plan E) is much better than their previous plans. It's just a huge improvement over the big thing with the basketball court and climbing walls,” Kaus said.
PAYSINGER (Continued from page 1)
Following a happenstance conversation between Paysinger’s former student, onetime Board of Education member Steven Fenton, Fenton’s wife, former Entertainment Tonight host Leeza Gibbons, and an industry agent, Paysinger will author his life story in collaboration with Glory Road scribe Bettina Gilois. Fenton was instrumental in hiring Paysinger as the school’s principal – a maneuver that engendered significant community opposition and sparked an unsubstantiated investigation into Fenton by the district attorney’s office, in addition to threats and ostracism. Following Paysinger’s first year as principal, the school delivered its highest statewide test scores ever. After graduating from BHHS, Paysinger attended Cal State Los Angeles to play baseball, later returning to his alma mater to watch his younger brother play football and baseball. Inspired to give back, Paysinger began coaching at the school on a part-time basis, later earning his teaching credentials and returning to teach Physical Education and coach football and baseball. Paysinger said the book would be published by Dec. 2013.

FEAR OF CLIMBING MT. EVEREST It all began as I was listening to Climb Every Mountain from the score of The Sound Of Music. Right there and then I made the decision to place climbing a mountain at the top of my bucket list, leap frogging over becoming a Walmart greeter, organizing my sock drawer, having a meaningful conversation with a beggar, carving an animal from a bar of soap, walking on water and getting a vanity license plate to justify my establishing a bucket list, one that read B4UDIE. The immediate problem confronting me was my life long fear of heights which, among other things, has limited my ability to drive over bridges, act out my Superman fantasy of being able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, throwing my ex-wife off the top of Masada and watching her do a triple somersault into the Dead Sea and walking a tight rope over Niagara Falls during the high season. To illustrate the depth of my neurosis I even avoid social climbing. Having made the decision to climb a mountain the next question was which one? There was only one peak worthy of my fantasy and that of course was Mt. Everest. Imagine a transplanted Brooklynite placing the City of Beverly Hills flag on top of the world. To guarantee that I survived this adventure my team would include all of my medical specialists, Bill Chow my neurologist in case the anticipation of scaling Everest keeps me on pins and needles, P.K. Shah my cardiologist in the event that I suddenly lose heart, Wendy Hoffman my dermatologist to monitor the condition of my skin and tell amusing stories about her kids, Robert Klapper my orthopedic surgeon and renowned body sculptor in case I fall and land on my funny bone (no laughing matter), Joe Caprioli my ophthalmologist to insure that those annoying black floaters do not impair the view from the summit, Myles Cohen, my hand surgeon to keep my fingers free of frostbite and thus enable me to text all the way to the summit and for good measure Tom Sokol, my colon rectal doc to keep things moving. Talk about an “A” team! With my medical safety net in place I began to focus on who could guarantee that I would survive the notorious Khumba Ice Fall, where most climbers meet their maker, reach the pinnacle and then find my way down the mountain without being taken and held hostage by Maoist rebels or running into the Abominable Snowman. Clearly my only chance of ever seeing the inside of Nate n Al’s again would rest with the selection of Sherpas. I remembered that it was Tenzing Norgan who guided Sir Edmond Hillary to his historic trek to the top of Everest and so
I approached his descendants hoping to recruit a handful of super Sherpas and, after a tough negotiation with William Morris Endeavor, I was able to announce to the world that Murray, Manny and Max Tenzing were on board and would be joined by their sister, Mildred, a struggling reality show producer for Nepal TV. It was all downhill from here, I purchased my Gortex windsuit, ice ax, crampons, goggles, Dr. Scholls new and improved odor destroyers, rope, oxygen tanks, satellite phone, Suuto altimeter, accurate up to 30,000-feet and “Mountain Climbing Manual For People Who Are Afraid Of Heights” online using my Tibeton Groupons, and turned my attention to food. I stocked up on Lipton’s tea, porridge (the good stuff that appealed to the three bears) biscuits, Campbell’s hearty noodle soup with ample pieces of white meat chicken, nuts, dried fruit and a generous supply of Reese’s Pieces. As a backup I packed take out menus from all of Kathmandu’s Zagat rated restaurants. Now the only thing standing between me and the summit was 29,029-feet of foreboding rock. Trying to be pragmatic I decided to survey the scene before making a final decision to attempt the climb and flew into Delhi, hopped on to a Buddha airlines flight to Kathmandu and then boarded an Agni flight to Lukla where I rented a large goat to take me to a local monastery for the night where the monks treated me to a meal of steamed dumplings filled with fresh Buffalo meat. Fortunately, I had removed one of the air sickness bags from the plane and was able to put it to good use. The next day I hailed a taxi to take me to base camp, an expensive proposition when one considers that it’s 17,000-feet straight up, the fare was slightly higher if you opted for a cab with snow tires. After sitting in front of the fake fireplace and hearing the locals talk about the unrelenting winds, avalanches, unpredictable snow storms, brutal temperatures so cold it feels like venturing into the fresh produce section of Costco, the fatality rate among first time climbers and the absence of a reliable dry cleaner, I decided to pack it in and return to the sunny weather that defines Beverly Hills. While I still enjoy listening to Climb Every Mountain, I have abandoned any thought of acting out my fantasy of conquering Everest. Currently at the top of my bucket list is going back in time to discover how the Pharaohs of Egypt prepared for a colonoscopy. Longtime Beverly Hills resident is a veteran television writer/director/producer and former senior executive with Merv Griffin Entertainment.

The entire City Council, along with past Mayors Jimmy Delshad, Joseph Tilem and Vickie Reynolds, and Playboy Executive VP Dick Rosenzweig were among the dignitaries on hand for the ribbon cutting ceremony. “Playboy is a worldrenowned company and the fact that they chose Beverly Hills to open up their headquarters is a statement to the quality of Beverly Hills,” Councilmember Lili Bosse said. Playboy signed the deal to return to Beverly Hills last November. “It’s a great delight to
be back in Beverly Hills, the greatest little city in the world,” Rosenzweig said. “It just seemed logical that Beverly Hills is where we belong.” According to Mayor Willie Brien, Beverly Hills currently generates roughly 75 percent of its revenue from the business community, making the retention and acquisition of world-class businesses a “priority” for the City. Playboy has been a media mainstay since Hefner released the publication’s first issue in Dec. 1951 with Marilyn Monroe on the cover.

In addition to the 121 Spalding Dr. property, The Gores Group also plans to occupy an adjacent building at 9800 Wilshire Blvd. with a pedestrian bridge connecting the two buildings. ily represent all committee members. “Clearly [the district] does not have enough funds to do it. I think we face a real issue.” COC member Shirley Zaragoza said there were two main factors contributing to the current “crisis mode”: 1) bond sales were based on overly aggressive financing positions and 2) Measure E funds are no longer being allocated solely toward improving safety and the educational process. “We’ve been in crisis mode, but we’ve been handling it month-to-month,” she said. “The community needs to know there is a total mis-allotment going toward funds and there is no money.” Chief Facilities Officer Nelson Cayabyab told committee members that if the board were to approve moving forward on only the modernization of Horace Mann and the high school, without taking into account peripheral expenditures, just $29 million would remain. The lowest proposed cost to modernize Hawthorne is $64 million. On Tuesday, Mary Anne McCabe, executive director for the district’s budget, plans to present the Board of Education with a revised audit scope statement geared toward selecting an auditor to review how Measure E funds are being used, as required by Proposition 39. The auditor, who will be chosen following the issuing of a Request For Proposal, will be charged with providing a professional opinion of whether the accuracy and the timing of the bond statements will meet particular needs, in addition to reviewing policies and procedures for compliance with current laws, COC member Joe Safier said.

The North Elm Drive home Cole shares with her husband Bruce had been for sale for months and recently sold in June for approximately $5.7 million. Rosenstein said the City rule is that if a member of a commission moves out of the City, they can remain on their commission if they intend to move back to Beverly Hills within six months of leaving. If they move with no intention to return, they must either resign or be kicked off their commission. Nan and husband Bruce, the ex-CEO of Mamtek U.S. Inc. are currently embroiled in a legal battle in Moberly, Mo. over an alleged failed business venture. Cole, whose term on the commission was set to end in April 2013, said the legal issues had nothing to do with her decision to resign. “My resignation was not due to unrelated matters involving a former business entity in which I was not involved,” Cole told The Courier. Cole said she felt she was leaving at a good time for the commission to be able to move forward as easily as possible without her. “The commission’s calender is currently calm and the August recess seemed a good transition point,” Cole said. The process for replacing Cole begins immediately and the City will accept applications for the vacancy between Aug. 10 and Sept. 24. Applicants selected will be interviewed by a four-person panel consisting of the city council liaisons (Mayor Willie Brien and reform councilmember Lili Bosse) and Planning Commission Chair Craig Corman and Vice Chair Brian Rosenstein).

Astrology
By Holiday Mathis TODAY’S BIRTHDAY (Aug. 10). You have the best kind of fun this month: the kind you make yourself. Friends help, though. What you do purely for kicks could wind up being profitable in September. January features the study of a different culture. Family connections bring adventure in December. A romantic proposal in June is stellar. Virgo and Aquarius people adore you. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). You talk about multiple subjects with so many different people you may find that you forget whom you told what. It will help you to slow down and reflect on it tonight. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). You are so busy with life you might feel like you’ve run a triathlon. Good news from an unexpected place will reenergize you and get you back into the swing of things. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). The journey you’re on requires both drivers and passengers, and you are versatile enough to be either one. You’ve been at the wheel long enough; slide over to the passenger side and relax. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). You have a great deal of social control today. You’ll set boundaries for what you’re willing to accept from others, and then you’ll encourage them to go wild within those boundaries. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Maybe you don’t remember last night's dreams, but they likely were filled with unfamiliar or vaguely familiar faces. In some way, you are far from home, but you’ll make your way back through the course of the day. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Though you’d like to be led by someone strong and able who has been there before, what you hoped to gain through the guidance of a teacher, you’ll find in a book or tutorial for a fraction of the cost. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). There are options you’re not seeing because people around you don’t see them. Instead of agreeing to the same reality, be different. The universe is counting on you. PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar. 20). You have a mighty purpose today: to make people smile. You cannot underestimate the good such a purpose can do in the world, and you will achieve your aim. ARIES (Mar. 21-Apr. 19). You’ll be a leader. Instead of handing people the job, let them come up with ideas and solutions on their own. They’ll work harder to execute those kinds of solutions. TAURUS (Apr. 20-May 20). “Grab the bull by the horns,” they say— but they forget that the bull usually has other ideas. Hang on to your bucking bronco. The rough ride of late is about to calm down, thanks to your steadfastness. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Kindnesses done to others in the distant past will come to fruition in kindnesses done to you in return. Be prepared to reap some much-needed help from the good deeds you’ve sown. CANCER (June 22-July 22). This is not a zero-sum game in which your success comes at someone else’s expense. There is an expense, but it can’t be absorbed by anyone but you. You’ll pay your own way.
CONNIE MARTINSON
Talks Books If Charlie Schroeder had been in high school and asked to write: “What I did last summer?,” this would have been a great topic for him. His book is entitled Man Of War: My Adventures In The World Of Historical Reenactment (Hudson Street Press $25.95). It seems Charlie and his wife, Wendy, went to fundraiser at Old Fort MacArthur Days, and began to talk to the Reenactors who were there. They wondered about people who loved a time period so much they felt compelled to dress like inhabitants of that period. A few months later Charlie is embedded with a group of Nazis in Colorado renenacting the battle of Stalingrad in the cold weather of Colorado. He wore the German uniform, and had his hair cut according to a picture of a young Nazi. Life was so rugged that when he asked where the outhouses were he was told “dig a hole.” He finally allowed himself to be called “dead” so he could go home. One would think he would have had enough, but this is only the first chapter. When finished reading that, I wondered where was the Civil War? That turned out to be a Civil War reenactment with a group in Brooksville, Florida where his grandparents live. Going back in this time machine of history, he found himself in the battles of the Romans against the Celts located in Lafe, Arkansas in a 26,000 square-foot replica of Roman auxiliary fort. Being addressed as “Carolus” by a Roman guard in a black tunic with gold chain mail and a gold helmet. Fortunately, there are enough wars through the centuries for him to cover Polish Wars, the Revolutionary War, and in Virginia, the Vietnam War reenactment was early January 1968 leading up to the Tet Offensive. He finishes up with his own creation, reenacting the history of the California missions, that is until his feet give out and his wife shows up with the car. I keep thinking it could make a good movie. www.conniemarinson.com aired and streamed on www.lacityview.org at 3 and 11:30 p.m. daily and on Yo u Tu b e / u s e r / C o n n i e Martinson’s Channel with this show plus 754 more.

“You got to know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em”–there’s a lot of sage advice in those lyrics, as the Indio City Council found out recently. Indio is the home of the Empire Polo Club, site of the popular backto-back Coachella rock music concerts and the following weekend’s Stagecoach country music concert. All three mega-hit concerts are produced and promoted by Goldenvoice, which is immensely powerful in the musical promotion. This last April, the three events drew more than 214,000, generating more than $60 million in ticket sales. Indio could not fail to notice this cash cow, even though the city’s share of the take included an $800,000 overnight camping fee and an already existing per ticket charge of $2.33. But City Councilman Sam Torres did the math and had an idea. Up the city’s tax by approximately $18 per ticket in order to bring in an additional $4 million to the city. Not a good idea. Goldenvoice immediately threatened to move the location of its concerts, and local hotels and businesses expressed the fact they would lose the millions of dollars that would otherwise be spent in the local economy. Although Goldenvoice is in escrow to purchase 280 acres of land in Indio for the promoters to broaden the reach of the concerts, the company is reportedly showing an interest in other properties outside the city … even looking at land as far away as Blyth. The existing contract between Indio and Goldenvoice expires next year and the city has expressed an interest to re-negotiate before then (without a ticket tax increase). Goldenvoice is slow coming to the table so we will keep you informed as the music gets amp’d up a notch. As Kenny Rogers could have told them: “You never count your money when you’re settin’ at the table. There’ll be time enough for countin’ when the dealin’s done.” ****** “Forever Marilyn” is not the title of a new movie, nor even a line of cosmetics. It’s the official name for the 26-foot-tall statue towering over passersby at the north-west corner of Palm Canyon Drive and Tahquitz Canyon Way in the heart of downtown Palm Springs. After Palm Springs approved placing of the Marilyn Monroe statue but denied any financial support, a private group of hoteliers raised about $100,000 to bring “Forever Marilyn” to Palm Springs on a temporary basis. The questions now are: can we keep her?; do we want to keep her?; and where will we keep her? But, not everyone wants to keep her. Some locals feel “Forever Marilyn” is a boast for tourism, while others consider it tacky and tasteless. And then, where is “Forever Marilyn” to be permanently placed? Its present location is only temporary and available until work begins on the Desert Fashion Plaza. (Come to think of it, waiting for work to begin on the Desert Fashion Plaza may result in the statue’s present location being permanent.) Regardless of Marilyn’s future (and the statue is for sale at an asking price of $1.5 million), the organization that brought her to Palm Springs hosted a tribute concert in her honor Sunday, the 50th anniversary of her death. The concert featured Jeffrey Allen, a Las Vegas entertainer known for his performances as Elton John in “Legends in Concert.” ****** For the past 14 summers, the Pegasus Riding Academy, which provides equine motion therapy for children and adults of all ages and disabilities, teamed with another animal-centered, non-profit, the Humane Society of the Desert, which provides a “no-kill,” safe haven for homeless, abandoned and abused pets, to present “Pets On Parade,” both as a major joint fundraiser and in recognition of those four-legged companions who love you through the best of times, and the worst. Highlight of the luncheon was the awarding of prizes in numerous categories, and the results are as debated as the results of a close presidential election. We name the award-winners without comment, knowing each of our pets is the true winner: •avian/wild/other: Winston, a Sulphur-crested cockatoo, owner: Sarah Shiller; •equine: Mia and Aspen, owner: Maja Ruetschi, M.D.; •feline: Gracie, owner: Tory and Jim Luick; •large canine: Moon III, owner: Alice and Gerry Bucci. •small canine: Crisket, owner: Tamar Geller; •Palm Springs “Cutest Pet of the Year”: Bailey, owners: Sue and Rick Moore; and •in memoriam: Ginny and deer, owner; Bonnie Campbell.

PURPOSE.NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, this information can be obtained from one of the following two companies: LPS Agency Sales & Posting at (714) 730-2727, or visit the Internet Web site w w w. l p s a s a p . c o m (Registration required to search for sale information) or Priority Posting & Publishing at (714) 5731965 or visit the Internet Web site www.priorityposting.com (Click on the link for “Advanced Search” to search for sale information), using the Trustee Sale No. shown above. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. THE REAL ROXBURY PARK STORY When you pay a PR flack to flack a story for you, you get a flack job. Let there be no doubt about what’s going on with the plans to rebuild a center at Roxbury Park. The current council majority of Mayor Willie Brien and members Julian Gold and Barry Brucker pulled every stunt they and City staff could think of to build a massive new building all over the Roxbury Park property. Reform Vice Mayor John Mirisch and member Lili Bosse worked overtime to get copies of the plans that the three others already had, but they were refused. Time and again they were outvoted 23 when they tried to do the right thing. Since both our reform councilmembers are resourceful, let’s just say that the real plans at times had to be “borrowed without permission” from other City departments. Citizen groups watched in horror as our scarce green space looked like it was going to be built over. Mirisch produced a video showing exactly what the three and City staff, led by ex-Colorado city official Steve Zoet planned to build big. (Zoet is often behind many of these projects in the City.) All the people wanted was the place upgraded and the bathrooms fixed. Instead, the threeplus the staff saw a chance to build a massive massif. That’s what they planned. Thanks to Bosse and Mirisch, and constant hard digging by The Courier, those plans were exposed. (Kudos also to our outstanding vigilant citizens who kept watch. They tipped us many times and we followed all their tips.) The Courier found the real plans and attended the actual meetings. We heard the double-talk, confirmed what was really planned, and published the information. Our Marla Schevker asked innocent questions of the outside professionals like architects and engineers who actually gave us straight answers—and confirmed our fears. Our citizens, led by Mirisch and Bosse, kept up the pressure on the three councilmembers and the staff. Finally, the heat got too hot. Brien and Brucker want to be re-elected and they were now facing a mobilized unity of citizens who simply wanted the park upgraded and the bathrooms fixed. They tried every dodge and weave they could think of to push their scheme past the people, but together our community exposed every twist. For Mirisch and Bosse, the staff continued to keep the plans away from them. This even continued to this past Monday (Aug. 6). Each time that happened, The Courier jumped in. Finally, they received the real plans and they were exactly what was feared. Even now, with the “compromise” supposedly approved, there are still no real “Option E” plans for the “revised” park facility. Those are yet to come. It was Bosse who broke the logjam by removing the supposed problem of a storm drain underneath the current building. (It could be moved for very little money.) Lili Bosse brought out the Option E plan and John MIrisch backed her. Some in town want to use of the word “com-
promise.” That’s wrong. That’s like saying “Lee compromised at Appomattox with Grant.” This was not a “compromise” between councilmembers, but a concession opposed nearly to the bitter end by Brien, Brucker and Gold. They did not lead the process nor help it in any way. What they did was surrender to the tremendous community pressure that hundreds of citizens brought to bear. They were bludgeoned into joining the Bosse/MIrisch Option E plan. Now, they and their flack brigade are putting the best face on it they can. Stepping back, it really is time to ask: “Why does it take months and months of community pressure and lots of additional taxpayer money spent on plans for big buildings to get our council to do what the citizens want?” Why is it so hard? This was not a decision about real-estate development with strong groups on both sides. This was a battle between the people and three elected councilmembers and their City bureaucrats with grandiose and inappropriate intent. We’re one small town where our elected council is supposed to be us. For this week (finally), they are acting like they are “us,” but they have been “them” for a long time. How long will this change of attitude last? Until the day after the next election? We must remain on guard. Will Roxbury be built as the council now seems to propose (but with no real plans yet), or will that “compromise” be quietly changed back into our local version of a convention center 3-2? Hyperbole? Maybe. Maybe not. “Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.” There is no way this should have been as hard as it was. And it is not over. So watch out for little clues, small hints that they’re changing the plans. Listen and watch. That’s what we all need to do. The Courier is doing just that and we need your help. Still, right now, it looks like the people will get what they want. That’s good. Let’s not let it get away.
Rabbi Jacob Pressman HOME, SWEET HOME! Some dream of a little cottage with a white picket fence at the end of a country road. I am comfortable in my little condo on Lasky Drive, a memorial to pioneer movie mogul Jesse Lasky. It provides me with some wonderful perks. Starting at the bottom, it has 40 parking spaces for the 15 owners and guests. On the same floor lies the beautiful reception hall, overseen by our amiable concierge, C.J. It has an elevator, which makes it unnecessary for me to climb steps, except for the rare times it is in repair. However, the condo faces out on the alleyway. This enables me to get the full sound roar of the several trash collecting trucks which traverse the alley at all times of the day. They forklift the trash bins under our master bedroom window, usually during early morning, with an ear splitting “crash bang.” The same area is where the gardener next door to us comes early mornings to use his roaring motorized leaf blower to chase away their fallen leaves. Incidentally, this space is a very convenient place for Beverly Hills High School students to gather after school to let off some steam. Sometimes when I am feeling mischievous I blow the police whistle we keep in our bedroom, and you would be proud of the speed with which these young people can run, even after a hard day at school. Some afternoons or early evenings the high school marching band parades from the school building to the outdoor stadium. It is just close enough from us to be softly audible. Then I look forward to its parading back again. Who needs Hollywood Bowl? One thing to which I do not look forward is seeing some of the students whose parents entrust them with expensive cars turn Lasky Drive into a two-block race track. Our trusty Beverly Hills police cars frequently patrol at peak student travel times. In the 22 years we have lived here, thank God, I have never heard a crash, but then my hearing is not that good. I am but a few blocks from Rodeo Drive, the new Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, and the West’s most beautiful gas station, Colker‘s Union Oil. I am in the Mecca to which people travel from the whole wide world and I don’t have to pack a suitcase and endure the hassle of travel to get here. So, as I observed above, there is no place I would rather be, except for Israel if I were much younger. The sights and sounds I have described are for me: “The Lasky Concerto” and our little Condo in the West is “Home Sweet Home.”
LETTER TO THE EDITOR During oral communication at the regular City Council meeting Tuesday, I attempted to present the council with a very serious problem in the hillsides of the Beverly Hills Estates–namely overbuilding, making pads larger, etc. This has never been permitted before but is suddenly being allowed on several projects. I asked when was the code changed, why was it changed, and who changed it? I have been unable to get answers to those questions. Residents were never advised this was happening and it was apparently done surreptitiously. I attempted to outline the difficulties we, as residents, are facing on a daily basis as a result of this socalled “code change.” All City staff ever says is: “It’s being done in accordance with the code.” Mayor Willie Brien shut me up. He did not want to hear what I had to say. I was representing Beverly Hills Estates and entitled to speak longer. It was like always–a pat on the head and now ”sit down and shut up. We don’t want to hear it.” The council only wants to hear platitudes. The question is how can we, as residents, get anything done when we cannot get the council’s attention to existing problems. I invite anyone to come to 1201 Laurel Way and look for yourselves at what is happening. It is outrageous! If this is according to code, the code must be changed. This is the point I never got to make as Mayor Brien shut me up. There are other examples of this outrage and I will be happy to point them out. The staff permits these outrages, makes excuses for them, and we have no one to talk to. I was (and am) angry at being shut up and not allowed to finish what I had to say. As a 55-year resident, I know what I’m talking about, but this is how I was treated. I think the mayor was off base in not allowing me to finish as there were no other speakers for oral communications. Mary Levin Cutler
