Beverly High Choir Performs In China By Marla Schevker When BHUSD Superintendent Gary Woods left for China with 16 students and parent chaperones, he was nervous. All he could think about the responsibility of keeping the kids safe. But by the end, he was just thankful. “I was thankful our kids were able to experience those from other cultures, religions and other countries,” Woods said. “I was thankful the sponsors of the event, in particular the Chinese authorities, did such a good job of taking care of us and making sure we had a quality experience in their country.” Last week, Woods and a select group of choir students traveled to Beijing, China at the invitation of the Chinese Government, to perform on a show for Chinese Central Television. The Beverly High group was joined by students from all over the world including John Burroughs High School in Burbank, Russia, Japan, Australia North Korea, South Korea and China. AT&T Opens New Innovation Center In Ra’anana, Israel The AT&T Foundry innovation center has opened in Ra’anana, Israel. The center tests and refines cutting-edge technologies so the utility’s customers receive the latest innovations and services faster. Projects at the Ra’anana center are enabling integrated mobile and wired broadband capabilities crossing multiple screens, including smartphones, televisions and emerging devices. Andy Shibley, VP/general manager of AT&T’s Greater L.A. region, said $450 million

has been invested locally (including Beverly Hills) in wireless infrastructure to increase speed, improve reliability and expand mobile broadband because mobile data demand increased 8,000 percent during the past four years. The AT&T Developer Program has ranked highest among U.S. wireless carriers for five straight years according to a survey of developers by Evans Data Corporation. Online tools and resources are available developer.att.com.

Fashion’s Night Out Adding Beverly Drive To Mix This year, one of the City’s other famous streets will be joining Rodeo Drive to celebrate fashion and all things Beverly Hills. Spearheaded by Jill Roberts’ owner Mark Freeman, at least 22 merchants from Beverly Drive will be participating in the festivities. The 2011 Beverly Hills Fashion’s Night Out will take place on Sept. 8 from 6-8 p.m. on both Rodeo and Beverly Drives. The event will once again feature the iconic Ferris wheel along with other carnival

themed events like fire eating stilt walkers. Beverly Drive, which will still be open to vehicular traffic, will close down its parking lanes for food trucks and will also be covered with stilt walkers, balloons and other carnivalesque entertainment. Freeman said although it is not mandatory, he hopes many merchants on his street will participate. This year is Beverly Hills’ second Fashion’s Night Out. Although the concept originated in 2009, Rodeo Drive wasn’t

able to put that dream into reality until last year. Fashion’s Night Out began as an event in New York to celebrate shopping and the fashion industry in light of the 2008 market crash. Vice President of Special Events for Rodeo Drive Kathy Gohari said Fashion’s Night Out is “a celebration of everything we work hard all year round to represent on Rodeo Drive.” For updates, visit via www.rodeodrive-bh.com and follow the fun on Facebook and Twitter (#FNO90210). Hawthorne Needs Spark Measure E Study Confab By Marla Schevker The BHUSD Board of Education had an in-depth conversation regarding the needs of Hawthorne School at a Measure E Study Session Wednesday. BHUSD Chief Facilities Official Nelson Cayabyab and his staff presented the Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing and Civil Engineering (MEPC) survey results conducted by BP & Associates. These showed the board where Hawthorne needs work and detailed the specific work down to the lighting fixtures and what pipes need to be re-

placed. There was also a presentation by architecture firm DLR Group WWCOT and its consultants regarding ADA compliance and seismology upgrades that will be necessary to keeping the buildings safe and up to code. Assistant Superintendent of Business Services Alex Cherniss discussed with the board the possibility of future funding for the modernizations. Cayabyab said the district currently has $60 million in the bank for Measure E and this money will run out in 2014. Cherniss said the district will need to begin

planning for funding in early 2013. Whether this is the next bond sale or a bond anticipation notice can’t be determined at this time. It all depends on the state of the market. Although the board decided it doesn’t need to hold a meeting to discuss the detailed facilities plans for the other K8s, the board will hold another Measure E Study Session in late September. Staff will hold one meeting when all of the detailed plans are finished, to allow the board and community to ask questions.

Employees’ Pension Contributions Take Pressure Off Arcadia By Winston Chua With the recent controversy about City pensions, here is what another city is doing. The Arcadia City Council voted 5-0 Tuesday night to establish new compensation and related benefits for city employees in a number of departments in a new, three-year contract that began retroactively on July 1, 2011. Councilman Peter Amundson said the deal is an unprecedented “amiable agreement brought about without force or impasse.”

As part of the new deal, employees in police and fire departments, public works and other city employees will receive salary increases but will also have to begin contributing to their pension programs. Amundson said the deal is unique and a “win-win” for city and its employees, with employees picking up a greater portion of a retirement plan that has become a new two-tier system (for both new and existing employees). Measure 2P To Be Heard Sept. 26 Measure 2P, the controversial two-hour parking legislation, was supposed to have been heard by Judge Ann Jones of the L.A. Superior Court on Friday. But the court changed the date and now Judge Jones won’t take up the issue until Monday, Sept. 26. Many residents were confused by the language of Measure 2P. The reportedly $100,000 G & L Realty funded campaign claims to establish two-hour free parking in most City lots.

The City already provides two-hour parking in six twohour free parking structures out of a total of 18 facilities. Measure 2P would provide twohour free parking at five additional City-owned lots. Pay lots include five upper and lower metered parking lots on Little Santa Monica Boulevard, three lots built after June 30, 2008 and exempt from two-hour free parking (Beverly Canon Gardens, the Montage, and the Third Street lot offer one-hour free parking).

UCLA Hospitals Recognized For Excellence

Faries To Head Melanoma Program

Once again, Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center has been ranked by U.S. News & World Report as the #1 hospital in the Los Angeles metropolitan area, the best in the Western USA and among the top five in the country. And its sister hospital, Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center and Orthopaedic, has been ranked among the top hospitals in the metro area. “This is a wonderful tribute to our entire health care team that provides excellence in patient-centered care,” said Dr. David T. Feinberg, UCLA Health System president. “We are grateful to our gifted and dedicated medical and support team throughout the UCLA Health System who go the extra mile every day to save lives and deliver compassionate care to patients in our community.” The U.S. News rankings showcase 720 hospitals out of about 5,000 nationwide. Each is ranked among the country’s top hospitals in at least one medical specialty and/or is ranked among the best hospitals in its metropolitan area. The magazine’s survey reviews patientoutcomes data, reputation among physicians and other care-related factors. This is the second year that

The John Wayne Cancer Institute (JWCI) at St. John’s Health Center has announced the return of Mark Faries, MD, FACS, one of the nation’s leading melanoma researchers. The former JWCI Surgical Oncology Fellow, will start Sept. 6 as director of the Melanoma Research Program and co-director of the JWCI Fellowship Program. “The John Wayne Melanoma Program is one of the absolute best in the world,” Dr. Faries explained as his reason for returning. “It has defined the nature of melanoma treatment and will continue to do so. The history of the institution, the available resources and the enthusiastic support of St. John’s, all make it possible to anticipate an outstanding future here.” Dr. Faries has a long history with JWCI. After completing his fellowship, he took a position as the director of Transitional Tumor Immunology, where he worked on research relating to cancer in the lymphatic system as well as melanoma and immunotherapy. He left JWCI to become an associate professor of surgery and dermatology at Yale University School of Medicine where

Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center and Orthopaedic Hospital has been included in the rankings. Covering 94 metro areas in the U.S., the metropolitan region hospital rankings complement the national rankings by including hospitals with solid performance, nearly at the level of nationally ranked institutions. “The rankings reflect the growth of our Santa Monica campus into an evolving academic medical center that maintains its longstanding tradition of community care,” said Posie Carpenter, the facility’s chief

administrative officer. “We can offer patients the best of both worlds — the expertise of an academic medical center, combined with the personalized and patient-friendly service of a community-based hospital.” N a t i o n a l l y, Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center’s ranking continues a “Best in the West” trend that has now extended 22 consecutive

years. “While we are pleased with this recognition, what really drives us is ensuring that every patient that comes through our doors gets care that is compassionate, safe, of the highest quality, and delivered with dignity and respect,” Dr. Feinberg said. Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center is also the only hospital in Los Angeles and the Southern California region that appears on the magazine’s “Honor Roll.” Just 17 hospitals made the national list.

Oncologist Returns To JWCI he opened the Multic e n t e r Selective Lymphadenectomy Trial and worked on trials of local immunotherapy. “We are excited that Dr. Faries Mark Faries has decided to return to the John Wayne Cancer Institute,” said Lou Lazatin, St. John’s and JWCI president/CEO. “His groundbreaking research is an essential part of the fight against cancer, and we know his leadership will inspire our fellows.” Upon his return, Dr. Faries will re-initiate the adoptive immunotherapy program as well as work with JWCI founder Donald L. Morton, MD, to aid in the completion of the international MSLT clinical trials regarding sentinel lymph node biopsy. He will also continue the Isolated Hepatic Perfusion research he had participated in before going to Yale.

CORRECTION: Soccer coach Ramyn Savar never received permission to use the El Rodeo soccer field. Both El Rodeo principal Dave Hoffman and former Mayor Jimmy Delshad said they were not directly aware of who Savar was. Hoffman said he remembered once telling Savar his team couldn’t play on the El Rodeo field and gave him instructions on how to rent it properly. Joan Mangum Just shy of 4,000 people showed up at Paramount Studios to enjoy Concern Foundation’s 37th Block party, which provided food from over 60 restaurants along with catering operations, wine, beer, cocktail, coffee and dessert stations galore. As usual the casino was packed and Le Spa manicures operations were deluged with guests. The theme, “Dancing in the Streets” was a huge hit with over 200 dancers performing a myriad of dances including hula, Balinese and street dancing on four different stages throughout the event. One of the things that made this year’s event so special was honoring 10 cancer survivors, many of whom have been involved with Beverly Hills-founded Concern Foundation over the years. “Each survivor provided a testament to the importance of supporting cancer research,” said Derek Alpert, president of Concern. “They represent the 13 million cancer survivors who conquered this insidious disease thanks to discoveries made by research scientists over the years.” A live auction culminated in some lucky attendees winning some terrific travel opportunities including American Airlines tickets for two to anywhere in the United States, hotel trips to two different resorts in Costa Rica, dinner for 10 to be provided by chefs from the Club Culinaire of French Cuisine, and tickets and hotel stay for the 2012 NCAA Final Four games in New Orleans. The event raised $1.4 million before the doors opened plus additional monies from the silent and live auctions will bring them over the goal of $1.5 million. To date, Concern Foundation has raised over $45 million for cancer research and has awarded funds to over 600 promising cancer researchers throughout the U.S. and around the world. The non-profit, primarily volunteer organization currently funds 63 cancer research projects. ****** La Focacceria Tra di Noi, an Italian spot, recently opened on Camden, where Prego used to be. ou know autumn has arrived when you see green leaves turn orange. Once this happens, fashionistas know that it is their turn to break out their eyepopping and fashionable orange colored clothing. During the cooler months, while many gravitate towards darker colors, you can brighten up your wardrobe by taking cues from many designers who have shown various ways to incorporate this fun color into their Fall collections. Gucci and Hermès prove that you can wear an orange jumpsuit or an orange pantsuit and still look sleek and sophisticated despite the boldness of the shade. Others who might be more hesitant to pull off such a dramatic look can still be trendy by wearing a pair of Tod's driving shoes or a Tod's purse that perfectly accents any look. No matter which approach you take to adding the color into your fall fashions, you will definitely look outstanding in orange.

As a result of the financial turbulence, CALPERS had to increase its rates it charged to Arcadia and similar cities to cover retirement costs, leaving the city with a financial burden. Past contracts had the city paying both employee and employer contributions to retirement plans. Temple Emanuel Academy Day School ‘Strives’ To Educate & Inspire ou may not have noticed Temple Emanuel Academy Day School (TEADS) while driving on Burton Way just west of Robertson. But the plain, red brick exterior holds a vibrant gem of a school. The school offers a strong curriculum in mathematics, fine arts, drama, writing, science and robotics. Music is taught using the acclaimed Orff Schulwerk instrumental music program. Instruction is individualized and in a limited class-size setting, with an ongoing emphasis on giftedness, innovation, and creative expression. It’s a personalized learning community nurturing the whole child. Head of School Donna Raskin, has instituted a pioneering program, called S.T.R.I.V.E. (Strengthening Talents, Responsibilities and Interests through Varied Experiences), which challenges all children to explore their interests in a deep, engaging way. S.T.R.I.V.E. goes beyond traditional academics and includes photography, art, journalism, web programming, playwriting, drama, voice and debate. Raskin, holds master’s degrees in Gifted Education and Educational Leadership. She raised the bar for instruction across 50 East Coast schools before bringing her talents to Temple Emanuel. Says Raskin, “We create opportunities for our children to develop their strengths by providing an array of experiences. This exposure ensures a well-rounded education— and incites a passion for creative and intellectual discovery." Children get numerous opportunities

to demonstrate what they learn and create. According to Rabbi Jonathan Aaron, director of education for Temple Emanuel, "By the time a student graduates, he/she will have presented or performed more than 40 times in front of an audience. Our kids can express themselves clearly and appreciate the opinions of others.” All of this in an environment infused with Jewish values and learning. Affiliated with Temple Emanuel of Beverly Hills, the school teaches children to feel the joy of celebration, the meaning inside rituals, the importance of positive actions between people, and a depth of connection to Israel. Rabbi Aaron and Cantor Yonah Kliger lead the children in prayer and song and they are part of the parent community, as well. The Hebrew curriculum, emphasizing communication and language proficiency, is taught by native Israeli speakers. Community is core to the culture, with a commitment to accessibility and respect. Our student body is diverse; families come from around the world – many parts of the U.S., Israel, Iraq, Iran, Europe, and Asia. Temple Emanuel also offers an outstanding pre-school program through its Early Childhood Center (ECC). ECC children and families are integrated into the Temple Emanuel School’s family through programs and events that bring our community together. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Fahren Helps Develop Young Talent f your child has dreams of becoming a singer or performer, Valerie Fahren can make them come true. An accomplished singer in her own right, Fahren has created Fahren Productions-Ar tist Development and Vocal Coaching, a boutique company that helps an artist, singer/actor/performer move to the next level of their career. Vocal Coaching For 13 years Fahren has been a leading vocal coach teaching streamlined vocal methods for all styles including pop, Broadway, R&B, rock and opera. “What makes me different from other teachers is that I know and understand the basic techniques involved in singing well,” said Fahren. “Knowing which of the basic techniques each person is missing, so that he or she can remedy it, is the key to progressing quickly. I treat each person individually. I’m not a ‘cookie cutter’ teacher. Each person has their own areas they want assistance with, unique to them. “What gives me the most satisfaction is seeing my students really winning in their careers and in their lives, and seeing them achieve their goals,” Fahren said. “I enjoy working with beginners and seeing them start from no experience to sounding like a professional singer in a short period of time.” She helps clients address problems of pitch, limited range, breathing, lack of power or stamina, “hitting the big note” and stage fright and lack of confidence. The results for her students are an increased range, strengthened voice, better control and improved quality.

Artist Development The "Tailor Made Individual Programs" are designed to help each artist grow into a professional singer or actor ready to be signed by an agent, record producer or record label—a performer who is 100 percent trained, ready and prepared to do anything in his or her particular field. Each program is personally supervised and run by Fahren who has 25 years in the entertainment industry as a singer, performer and manager. The one-year programs include: vocal coaching, singer's music theory, piano, stage presence drilling, general audition preparation, introduction to record producers, songwriters and agents; image consultation on vocal style, resume/demo preparation, development of personal unique vocal style and performance and knowledge of the music and acting businesses. Industry Showcase Twice yearly for the past 10 years, Fahren Production has put on industry Showcases featuring Ar tist Development clients. A pre-requisite for being included in the showcase is studying consistently and being ready to perform in front of industry professionals. Temple Israel Of Hollywood Readies Completely Rebuilt School Building early 500 Temple Israel of Hollywood (TIOH) students will begin school next month in a completely rebuilt, state-of-the-art education center. The rebuilt school facility, home to TIOH Religious School and TIOH Day School, features renovated and reconfigured classrooms and administrative offices and a fully integrated technology infrastructure with increased fiber-optic ser vice capacity, a dedicated ondemand, wireless computer networking system, an iPad-based library platform and interactive “smart” whiteboards in the classrooms. “This rebuilding of our school facilities is concrete evidence of our community’s commitment not only to our children and their education, but of the very future of our Jewish community here in the heart of Hollywood. Our children’s educational memories will be set within both a community and a building that is open, creative, beautiful, and inspiring,” said Rabbi John Rosove. The design of the new classrooms and administrative space is inspired by the elements and colors of nature, with increased natural light, optimized learning and adult space, a new “Learning Alcove” for break-out study sessions, a new Faculty Resource Center and a floorto-ceiling glass window wall “veranda” beside the upper elevator bank. Improved ventilation, air-quality control, energyefficient lighting and natural materials and finishes create a healthy, planetfriendly environment. “These new learning spaces will serve the large, diverse, and growing

populations of students in our various programs from kindergar ten-sixth graders in our Religious School, families in our Shabbaton family education program, and teenagers in our Teen Program. The open and flexible design of the classrooms will help us fulfill our mission of creating educational environments that include both affective and cognitive learning. This new educational center will help us continue to innovate and expand upon our Jewish educational options for families and youth,” said Rabbi Jocee Hudson, Rabbi EducatorTIOH Religious School Director. To Rachel Lewin, TIOH Day School’s head of school, "The heart and soul of the school are the joyful, creative and compassionate teachers, children and families who make up our community of learners. We are blessed that in the school’s 22nd year, its facility matches the quality of the community, reflecting the light, joy and energy of hearts and minds studying within.” The jewel of the school building is the new, dual-function, state-of-the art science lab/art studio. Sixty percent larger than the room it replaces, the new sky-lit room is equipped with modern work tables, a teaching/demonstration station and the increased space, modern fixtures and furnishings necessary for modern collaborative learning and creative and scientific explorations. The art studio portion of the new studio/lab is named “The Grace and Ferrel Rosenberg Art Studio” in honor of the parents and grandparents, respectively, of longtime congregants.

Sensei Dawn Brings Children’s Martial Arts To BH ver the course of 20 years, Sensei Dawn Barnes has turned a credit card and a dream into the most successful all-children's martial arts schools in the world. Star ting in a tiny, one-room school, Dawn Barnes Karate Kids has exploded across Southern California, but it’s the grand opening of her eighth and newest school in Beverly Hills that makes Sensei Dawn the proudest. “I graduated from Beverly Hills High School, so to finally bring something I love and believe in back to my hometown is a thrill.” The secret to her success? “It’s all about the children. Every decision I make, from the color of the paint to the quality of the equipment, from the curriculum to the reward systems, is based solely on providing children with a safe, comfortable environment in which they can grow and learn.” Sensei Dawn’s phenomenal success has not gone unnoticed. She has served as the Director of Children’s Education for the National Association of Professional Martial Artists, and was recently inducted into Black Belt magazine's prestigious Hall of Fame as Woman of the Year. A true pioneer in teaching martial arts to children, Sensei Dawn has turned the mar tial ar ts industr y upside-down with the introduction of her age-appropriate curriculum and love-based teaching methodology. “Parents walk into our schools and can’t believe we teach karate.

But when they try a class and see their child learning life-skills like respect and focus while having a blast, they can’t wait to come back.” Dawn Barnes Karate Kids offers classes for children 214 years old. “There is nothing more rewarding than watching one of our student’s grow up at the school. We even have some students who started with me when they were toddlers, and now they’re working as teachers.” Sensei Dawn is also proud to offer a style of martial arts that she developed after working with children, and listening to their needs Sensei Dawn Barnes with some of her students. for more than 20 years. What will a City employee receive upon retirement? Like all pensions, “calculation” is required. Supposedly, CalPERS earns money on the contributions through various investments acting just like any other investor. The earnings, when added to the cash contributions, are supposed to be big enough to pay all the pensions promised to all public employees in the system. The “estimated” return on CalPERS funds is over 7 percent. It used to be higher.

BELL (Continued from page 1)

help Bell on his own time, but asking Beverly Hills residents to pay for our staff to work for Bell at a minimum is something that needs to be decided by our

workers. Today, the pay on which the pension is based is $160,000. The assistant, if female, has a life expectancy of 80. That means about 25 years on the pension. The pension will start at 75 percent of the $160,000 or $120,000. Every year that amount will go up by inflation – now running about 5 percent a year. Even without the inflation increase, that’s $3.0 million in payments. So, not only did Beverly Hills pay its workers nearly double the private sector every year of work, the City is committed to pay that employee $3 million (mini-

mum) in pension. With an annual cost-ofliving adjustment, even at a low rate such as 3 percent per year, that total is $228,000 per year. No private or social security pension comes close. For a few other examples of what Beverly Hills is committed to pay for retirement benefits (estimated based on life expectancy, terms of service, and “PERS Pay” information supplied by the City), take a look: •Parking enforcement officer: $1.598 million retirement pay •Street sweeper $1.143 million retirement pay •Assistant Director of Various Services (7) $ 3.187

August 26, 2011 | Page 19 million retirement pay The above numbers are not “net present value.” They represent a estimate of the minimum cash that will be paid for retirement to various sample personnel. Based on the City “average” of $150,000 per City employee, assuming the “average” retirement age is 53 (public safety = 50; all others 55), and the “average” life expectancy (77 years) is the norm for Americans, and the “average” base on which to calculate retirement is 82 percent (90 percent for public safety; 75 percent for all others) the “average” retirement pay Beverly Hills will pay each of its current employees if $3.321 million.

PENSIONS (Continued from page 1)

Actually, it’s now around 1 percent and dropping. That means that in order to pay pensions at the levels promised, every municipality in California, including Beverly Hills, must pay more and more every year to make up the shortfall. In Beverly Hills, the number has jumped from zero to over $14 million this year alone. It will keep rising and likely top $30 million in just a few years. Let’s assume an assistant city librarian retires after 30 years of service at age 55, the first year retirement can be taken for non-public safety

The fact he is an addicted gambler who will call her in the middle of the night to come to Gardena because he is losing does not diminish her belief in his rules of luck. Berry is the DJ for late night radio classic rock. She loves what she does. She also believes in the rule of three, so that having had two disastrous love affairs, the new one with DJ Ryan Riley has to be catastrophic—especially when the station puts them together in a morning talk show. NIMBY? NOT!

After accusing Beverly Hills of “hysteria” for not wanting to risk destroying the Beverly High campus, Metropolitan Transit Authority flacks, PR agents, and promoters of the tunnel under the high school always accuse us of “NIMBY-ism.” You know, that means “Not In My Back Yard.” It’s a pejorative, intended to make us feel guilty about something–usually low-income housing, industrial uses, high traffic, disruption of our lives, blocking our views. As “the rich,” we want those bad things to occur in “poor” neighborhoods or so goes the accusation. That’s the accusation leveled by the MTA cabal, including maybe even some ex-mayors of Beverly Hills. A great example of “NIMBY” is windmills for wind power. The late Sen. Ted Kennedy loved those things until they wanted to put them off the Massachusetts coast. That would create severe eye pollution, not to mention chop up thousands of sea birds. He blocked them. “NIMBY.” Today, we are being told by L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Zev Yaroslavsky, our own supervisor (whom we have always liked, respected and supported) that “regional interests” mean we must support that tunnel under BHHS or see them in court. Why? If we do not give in, we are guilty of “NIMBY-ism.” The real message of the accusation of “NIMBY-ism” is “you are a hypocrite.” When we are accused of “NIMBY-ism,” they mean we are hypocrites. Let’s examine this. Just how “NIMBY” is Beverly Hills when it comes to the Westside Subway Extension? • Beverly Hills was a staunch supporter of the subway extension from the beginning. • When others objected, Beverly Hills stood up for it–based on the Wilshire/Santa Monica Boulevard route. • We supported the “30/10” plan to advance funding for the entire project. • City voters overwhelmingly backed the Measure, the extra sales tax for the subway. This is in spite of the fact that no real study can demonstrate any appreciable improvement in actual traffic through Beverly Hills. Are we hypocrites? No. This is what our agreement means: • This means we agreed to ripping up the center of Beverly Hills down Wilshire for over four (4) YEARS. • We agreed to allow a surface trench 40 feet wide— the length and breadth of Wilshire. • We agreed to block all our north/south traffic for some or all of four years. • We offered to turn over large tracts of Beverly Hills land for staging areas and “park and ride” facilities. • No other city, including Los Angeles, offered any such thing. • We agreed to allow over 10,000 massive truck trips through Beverly Hills to move dirt at all hours of the day and night for years. • We agreed to risk the survival of every Beverly Hills business on or close to Wilshire for four (4) YEARS. • We agreed to disrupt our lives and our City for four (4) years. No other city or neighborhood has come close to Beverly Hills when it comes to the willingness to support this subway. All of this means dirt, noise, traffic, disruption, congestion. There is zero doubt our community will suffer. Yet, we have been prepared to agree to all of this in our front yard and our back yard and our side yard. So now why are we “NIMBY”? Because Villaraigosa and Yaroslavsky want to move the Century City subway station one block south–yes, that’s right – one lousy block. Apparently Century City developers and property owners don’t think their tenants can walk one block to Santa Monica Boulevard for all these great benefits the subway will bring. Oh, and please note that this tunnel route costs an extra $60 million minimum and slows the trains down significantly. At the same time MTA wants the $60+ million tunnel under Beverly High, the agency took away the stations serving South Central because “they cost $60 million.” Who is getting what from government? Apparently the entire African-American community in Los Angeles is not worth a station, but one block in Century City is. That’s the MTA. For that, to avoid being labeled “hypocrites,” we are supposed to accept a tunnel barely 30-feet beneath our only high school. The tunnel itself will prevent any new construction through the middle of our high school campus forever. It condemns our high school’s future. For one block! Beverly Hills is not “NIMBY” country. We are the opposite. This City has offered to put at risk its very commercial center, risk millions of dollars of business income and business taxes, split our City in two for years, and do all within our power to expedite and assist the Westside Subway Extension. Who are the hypocrites? Not us. Just tell it like it is: campaign contributions from Century City developers are driving the Los Angeles political machine and Beverly Hills is in the way. To them, if our high school is jeopardized, “too bad.” As Supervisor Yaroslavsky said: “If you don’t like it, sue us.” As he repeats his challenge, we say, “Remember South Pasadena? You like that 710 Freeway extension over there? The one that will never get built?” We see and, as for MTA, we will see just what happens if you insist on threatening our only high school. Is that one block worth it?

LETTERS Though a little late to the fracas about the subway, I think I have a solution as I haven’t read this anywhere. The original subway stop is at Santa Monica Boulevard and Avenue of the Stars. MTA wishes to move it into the middle of Century City, at Constellation. Why not leave it at Santa Monica and build a one block tunnel to Constellation for a second entrance. In other cities, you walk 4 to 6 blocks to get to a subway stop entrance (in NYC, Paris, London, and DC to name a few). I understand the Santa Monica site has the advantage of possibly having a park and ride facility. If the entrance to the subway were inside Century City, parking is expensive at the mall or an office building, and otherwise possibly not available. As for the few who could not walk the block, just look at LAX.. It has moving sidewalks and escalators. Hyman Herbst ****** I am delighted the City Council has finally chosen to show a “united Beverly Hills” by unanimously voting to send a letter to the MTA establishing the City will not allow a subway tunnel route under Beverly High. I was intrigued by the word “hysterical” thrown around by an elected official to describe critics of a subway tunnel under BHHS. It prompted me to reach for my trusted dictionary (the old hardback) to reflect on the meaning of words akin to arrogant, deceitful and pompous. Perhaps some government officials should come to terms with the cold, hard fact the average “Joe and Jane citizen” is fully capable of when our children and teachers are put at risk without the need of an EIR or another bureaucratic “body-spinning” rhetoric. It should be remembered that many of their constituents are neither brain-dead nor forgiving. Gloria Seiff ****** The City Council and B.H. residents are continuing to be obstructionist and not forthright by contending that the subway going under the high school at a depth of 60-80 feet will prevent an expansion of the school “in the decades” to come. They are not looking at the region as a whole and what is best for all of those who live and work here. It is silly to not support the subway to Century City being located in a convenient station as close to the middle of the Century City residential/ office/hotel/shopping core as possible. This type of subway depth is not a problem in numerous cities in the world so it should not be a problem for BHHS. I hope the Metro officials, politicians, residents and potential riders of the subway to Century City will not let the BH “NIMBY” population stop or delay progress with a false issue like this one. We need to solve traffic issues as a region and act in the best interests of all not just those narrow-minded agenda ridden obstructionist residents and politicians in BH. Hunt Barnett

Rabbi Jacob Pressman WHERE ARE MY LOST SIX COOKIES? This week my dear wife brought home some eye drops because she heard me complaining about pink and scratchy eyes. The box was 4-inches high by 2-inches wide by 1-inch deep or 10 cubic inches in volume. Huddled in the bottom were two little round bottles of the medication, 1-inch tall and 1-inch wide or approximately 1-cubic inch in volume, or 3 cubic inches in toto. They were not wrapped in anything and there were no papers in them. On the box it read: “Two 10ml(milliliter){1/3 FlOz} Bottles.” In other words I had bought 2/3 of a fluid ounce of non-prescription eye drops for $8.49. In an effort at honesty, on the deep purple box there was a hardly visible image of the bottles inside labeled ACTUAL SIZE. I opened a 10-inch tall box of cereal, and found therein a waxed bag of the grains only 5-inches” tall. I calculate I bought 4 -inches by 6-inches by 2-inches of air plus the cereal. There is a brand of cookies I enjoy. They are usually contained in three rows of 15 cookies each. Recently I opened a sealed package with six less cookies in it. Now, maybe I am better off healthwise with less sugar, or maybe they were missed by the highspeed machine that packages them. I don’t know. However, almost everywhere I foolishly spent precious time examining products for which I thought I may have been ripped off, I found that I had been. Oh, bring back the halcyon days of yore, when I would walk in the local food store, and address the owner-salesclerk himself and ask for a pickle. He went to the pickle barrel, plunge his bared arm into the brine and came up with a pickle. “No,” I could say, “I want a straighter one.” Back into the brine he went and came up with a better one. I departed, satisfied with my purchase, and appreciative of his personal attention. Gone are those days. When I buy pickles they are sealed in a jar and the check-out lady’s arms are dry. Lest you think of me as being picky-picky or fuddy-duddy, let me direct your attention to a more elegant old Latin warning: “Caveat emptor...buyer beware!” Can we? Does it matter? I don’t know. You tell me. ****** ****** Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky is With all due respect to the quoted regarding tunneling under Beverly High: “If you disagree, sue fine people on the BHUSD board and Beverly Hills City Council, I me.” On Tuesday, a 5.9 earthquake believe they are completely wrong was felt in DC, NYC, NJ, North to reject the renewal of the oil Carolina, Virginia and as far away extraction lease with Venoco at Beverly High. as Detroit and Chicago.
