City Council To Review Rent Stabilization Ordinance, Singh Report Tuesday

Incident At El Rodeo Ignites Safety Concerns By Laura Coleman El Rodeo students and staff got a bit of a scare on Friday morning when a man jumped the fence shortly after school began. Just as the school day was about to commence, around 8:25 a.m., Beverly Hills Police approached a man who was exhibiting erratic behavior on Whittier Drive and attempting to enter the El Rodeo campus. After a district security guard stationed at the school’s front gate prevented the man from entering, he ran a short distance down Whittier and jumped the fence into the El Rodeo schoolyard. Students were immediately ushered into classrooms and the school was put on lock down as the district’s security guard and BHPD pursued the subject, con-

firmed Superintendent Michael Bregy. “He did not have contact with any students, and barricaded himself inside a vacant school bathroom,” Bregy wrote to the parent community in an email sent out after the incident. “The lockdown was lifted once the subject was removed from campus, and normal school activities resumed.” Within minutes of the man coming on campus, BHPD entered the bathroom and apprehended him. The man was subsequently transported to the hospital for further evaluation. “As principal, it gives me great comfort to know that our staff takes their training and drills to heart and are prepared to protect our students if need be,” said El Rodeo Principal Kevin Allen.

By Victoria Talbot Director of the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution and Associate Professor of Law at Pepperdine University Sukhsimranjit Singh will present recommendations formed from landlords and tenants in the seven facilitated dialogue sessions for the Rent Stabilization Ordinance at Tuesday evening’s Formal Meeting of the City Council at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers. Singh was able to move the disparate groups into civil conversation, a difficult task at the onset mired in distrust, anger and fear.

The dialogues resulted in consensus on some issues and dialogue on others, with each session contributing progress toward agreement between landlords and tenants regarding the rent stabilization ordinance. The results will inform the council about policy, staffing and funding for the ordinance, as well. Last month, the council postponed a decision on a $1.5 million proposal developed by consultants Management Partners for the implementation of the ordinance as it is currently written (see ‘RENT’ page 11)

The Courier: Considering the concerns expressed, based on articles in numerous publications, will Wanda be able to use funds from China to support this project? Rohan a ‘Beckett: One Beverly Hills is a U.S. funded development. Wanda is fully committed to bring this $1.2 billion hotel and condominium addition to Beverly Hills. For further clarification, a ‘Beckett explained that Wanda was drawing on “a variety of domestic sources,” to finance the construction, but that they would not be releasing “explicit” names. A ‘Beckett said that Wanda has “our own source of funds from domestic construction finance. It’s being worked through right now.” (see ‘WANDA GROUP’ page 11)
