By The Courier Staff The Beverly Hills Unified School District achieved its first major improvements in academic performance in many years according to state of California test scores released Wednesday.

The current Beverly Hills Unified School District Board of Education majority, comprised of President Lisa Korbatov, Vice President Brian Goldberg and member Steven Fenton, joined on many matters by member Jake Manaster, during the last two years made changes in leadership, approach, mission statement and accountability when Korbatov was elected to the board in 2009. Fenton was then elected president of the board and implemented many changes, which were vigorously disputed by previous members. (see ‘API,’ page 20)

Fashion News & Notes Marc Jacobs to Dior? Talks Get Serious PARIS — Bernard Arnault might poach a star designer for Christian Dior after all — and one from his own constellation of luxury brands.

According to sources, the business titan is in talks with Marc Jacobs about becoming the new couturier of the fabled French house. Dior has been without a creative leader since the March ouster of John Galliano in the wake of allegations of racist and anti-Semitic outbursts.

Such a move would unseat Jacobs from Louis Vuitton, the cash-cow brand at LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton — and possibly set in motion a reshuffling at the French luxury giant.

It is understood that Phoebe Philo, who has revved up Celine with her ultra-chic, minimalist clothes and must-have handbags, could be first in line to succeed Jacobs at Vuitton.

WWD Priscilla of Boston to be Shuttered NEW YORK — DBP Holding is closing its Priscilla of Boston division and salons, and retiring the Priscilla of Boston portfolio of brands, WWD has learned.

The 19 salons throughout the U.S. will remain open until Dec. 31, and all current bridal orders will be fulfilled, according to the company.

Priscilla of Boston brands such as Platinum by Priscilla of Boston, Melissa Sweet, Reverie by Melissa Sweet and the Vineyard collection will be discontinued.

Graduation Requirements Increased For Frosh

By Marla Schevker The Beverly Hills Unified School District Board of Education increased graduation requirements for all incoming freshman at its board meeting last week.

According to Board Vice

President Brian Goldberg, this policy was originally crafted in spring of 2008 and is meant to keep Beverly High’s graduation requirements in line with the A-G requirements of the UC system.

“A-G requirements are not the silver bullet, it’s not going to

fix all the problems,” Goldberg said. “It doesn’t mean all of our students are going to go to a UC school. (But it will be) setting a certain standard and expectation whether you’re going to a two(see ‘GRAD REQUIREMENTS,’ page 8)

CRASH!—A Metro bus crashed into a parked tour bus on westbound Wilshire east of Linden last Sunday at 3:42 p.m. According to Traffic Bureau Lt. Mark Rosen, the tour bus had stopped to let off passengers when it was hit from behind. Approximately 14 people sustained injuries, ranging from complaints of pain to minor visible injuries.

Although there were no serious injuries, nine people were transported to the hospital with cuts and contusions. Rosen said the cause of the collision is still under investigation.

“(We need to) figure this out in a more concrete detailed fashion,” Board President Lisa Korbatov said. “I’m hoping the four (committee members) will get together as soon as possible.”

Mayor Barry Brucker said there are many options the committee should explore as compatible uses of the Venoco site.

“This could include but is not limited to commercial, resi-

dential, district offices or green spaces,” Brucker said. “Both the City and the schools may be exposed to loosing oil revenues so the challenges are to be creative and collectively look at responsible revenue sustaining alternatives.

The interim oil-drilling ordinance will be discussed by the City Council at their Sept. 20 meeting.

The Debt–Delivers With A Taut Thriller The Debt is a taut thriller, far above the films of this genre and forcefully directed by John Madden with plenty of action and suspense.

Helen Mirren, Sam Worthington, Tom Wilkinson and Jessica Chastain excel in a script that is slightly convoluted but always exciting.

The story is about three Mossad agents chosen to track down and bring a despicable German doctor named Dieter Vogel (Jesper Christensen), the butcher surgeon of Birkenau, to Israel where he will be judged for his heinous deeds. Opening in the year 1997, Rachel (Mirren) is being feted at a dinner celebrating a book recounting her heroism and that of her two cohorts, Stephan (Wilkinson) and David (Ciaran Hinds).

During the affair, flashbacks to 1965-1966, show a much younger Rachel, (Chastain), Stephan (Worthington) and David (Marton Csokas), as they concoct a plan to kidnap Vogel, who has changed his name and is now a respected physician living in East Berlin.

The acting is uniformly exemplary, especially Chastain, the well-meaning ditsy blonde from recently released, The Help. As the no-nonsense Rachel, she is driven by the stories of Vogel’s monstrous surgeries at the concentration camp. Not only is she beautiful, resulting in a dangerous liaison between her, Stephan and David, her character is diametrically opposite from her performance in The Help–brilliant in both roles handling comedy and drama effortlessly.

Using her as the lure to trap Vogel, the action builds to a climactic scene and does so with unyielding tension and drama. The slightly convoluted script shouldn’t be a deterrent because the direction and acting are so convincingly carried out, that you will undoubtedly recommend that your friends and neighbors see it.

Every once and a while, a group comes along with a purpose that is well intended, but slightly quixotic. Yet success doesn’t happen without a dream, and that’s why we were attracted to the International Music Summit and its stated purpose of having been “… put in place to revive the (music) industry.”

It should come as no surprise that the music industry has been going through significant changes the past few years. Sales are down; music has gone digital and easily available online, often without charge.

In its attempt to come up with new ways to market, promote and refresh the music industry, the IMS has been designed as a five-day event – inspired by the Winter Music Conference in Miami–for independent artists to meet and interact with record promoters, writers and distributors.

More like a festival than a summit, this year’s event, will be held in Cathedral City Sept. 21 to 25.

It will feature live performances, dances, pool parties and a speakers series dealing with such topics: “How to Sell Your Music” and “Getting Great PR.” In addition, independent performing artists can perform at one of the several participating venues located throughout Cathedral City, where labels and management can come and see them. Perhaps one feels repeatedly vulnerable to certain kinds of suffering or par ticular difficulties in life.

Perhaps these difficulties lead to problems in personal relationships and create pitfalls professionally. Often, such struggles can be associated with anxiety, depression, substance abuse, or many other negative feelings and behaviors.

The causative psychological issues behind negative thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are intertwined with an individual’s unique personality.

Simple diagnoses meant to label an individual as having a particular psychological “condition” are seldom enough to address the source of an individual’s life problems and to illuminate effective solutions moving for ward in one’s life.

Psychotherapy works differently for every person and for every unique personality.

Progress in therapy and in life can best be made with the help of a therapist’s attention to an individual’s unique personality and how it influences one’s thoughts, behaviors, and decision-making.

Speech Pathologist Works With All Ages To Help Them Communicate Better delia Mirzadeh wants to help people communicate. At Innovative Speech & Language Pathology, a company she founded three years ago, Mirzadeh works with people with speech impediments, such as disorders or delays in speaking, language, cognition, fluency, stuttering, voice and social pragmatics and auditory processing.

Children sometimes don’t speak as early as their peers, have limited vocabularies, get stuck on one word or forget words; and Mirzadeh has numerous techniques to treat these problems.

She also works with people with congenital or acquired speech problems as a result of autism or mental retardation; and speech and language disorders resulting from strokes, traumas and cancer.

Her work however is not limited to just speech, but helping clients with memory and reasoning. Often as the result of a stroke or head trauma, patients loose cognitive and comprehension skills or their memory is compromised.

In those cases, Mirzadeh works at increasing attention span, problem-solving skills and “sequencing,” like learning how to make a bed in the morning or cook a hamburger.

Social pragmatics involves working with those with autism helping them develop social skills and the ability to interact appropriately with their own peers.

“I believe that from the minute we are born — through our crying, screaming, different behaviors and vocalizations — we are trying to communicate and get our needs met,” Mirzadeh said.

“For some individuals, that ability to express themselves or understand has been compromised and it affects their lives daily and become a tortuous process.

“In the case of children, if they can't communicate their needs and others don't understand them, they start hitting, crying and withdrawing. Their demands are not understood and they start acting out,” Mirzadeh said.

“Post-stroke adults who can't tell people if they are thirsty or hungry become frustrated and develop emotional problems because they can't communicate and understand those around them.”

Mirzadeh does a full evaluation of each client including their language and speech, articulation—the speech sounds they use—if there’s a lisp, and how they produce sounds. She looks at the muscles of the tongue, lips, jaw and completes a full report giving recommendations of how many times a week a client should have therapy and goals to reach.

Her holistic approach involves including the pediatrician, audiologist, dentist, teachers and parents in an inter-disciplinary team. “I like to know what parents are noticing,” Mirzadeh said. “And if dental issues are causing a speech problem, I like to work with the dentist and pediatrician.”

“I want to thank all the staff, especially our teachers and our students, for putting their best foot forward and doing their best to achieve academic excellence and once again going from good to great,” Korbatov said. “(It) is not just a slogan, we actually matched our deeds with our words.”

The district as a whole improved 19 points from 872 to 891.

Beverly High moved from a disappointing 839 to 873. Hawthorne Elementary moved from 909 to an impressive 926, with Beverly Vista at 915 (from 904), with El Rodeo and Horace Mann staying even at 901 (was 902) and 898, respectively.

Goldberg said while he is pleased with the growth and direction of the district’s academic achievement, in every segment but math, the work is not done.

“We will continue to work to achieve our goals of academic excellence for all our students by raising our expectations and standards for all,” Goldberg said. “We are trending in the right direction but we cannot become complacent and we must continue to work hard to understand what these numbers mean and how we can be better.”

The board recently was able to attract Gary Woods, Ph.D., the superintendent of the state’s top performing district, San Marino Unified, to head the district. Wood’s former district again led all districts.

“We are proud of our students, our teachers, and our classified staff

members who support instruction in exceptional ways,” Woods said.

“We understand our good fortune is a result of a team effort. Our community’s support of our numerous campaigns clearly indicates the priority we place on our public schools. I am extremely proud of this effort.”

Manaster said the increased API score is an accomplishment on a “new scale,” which is representative of a welcomed and needed trend at the BHUSD. “Actions and energy spent by the board, the administration, teachers and staff directly improved leadership, morale and the tone of our classroom learning environment resulted in students who were both willing, able and equipped to dedicate themselves to performing better on these standardized tests,” Manaster said.

“Our students are clearly allstars. While standardized tests are only one measure of how well we deliver on the educational promise of our students, it is with great pride and respect for those who floated nearly all the boats in this educational institution to new heights, that I congratulate this community on its promise for the future.”

BHUSD’s scores had remained stagnant for years, reflecting to some degree the “hands off” attitudes of previous boards. (BHHS: 2005-815, 2006-820, 2007-824, 2008-805, 2009-846, 2010-839).

In a letter to The Courier, a former board president wrote that the only job of the school board is to “select the superintendent” and get out of the way. This policy led to years of declining or stagnant API scores, the construction debacle now working its way through the criminal court system, the school lunch program fiasco and administrative turnover.

Each issue has been addressed directly by the current board with progress on all fronts.

PROVING THE PUDDING The just-released results of Beverly Hills schools’ API scores . were not an accident. Beverly Hills, as a district, is one of the richest – if not the richest – district in the state.

BHUSD receives strong funding from property taxes. In fact, it has “maxed out” the amount of property taxes it can collect to the point where we had to give money back to the state. The district earns over $1 million annually from the tiny oil well drill site located for decades on the back of the high school campus. The City of Beverly Hills is extraordinarily supportive through the Joint Powers Agreement that sees the City paying the school district for use of badly-needed recreation and other facilities. On top of this, residents overwhelmingly backed a $300+ million bond issue to reconstruct our campuses.

The one huge stain on this rosy picture has been the actual performance of the district. Superintendent after superintendent came in and left leaving more and more chaos. School boards whined they were powerless to change “the culture” of low academic performance. Teachers complained that “If the principal would just make the kids turn off the cell phones, we could raise scores 100 points.” Principals were more devoted to touchy/feely selfesteem concepts than demanding performance from students and teachers alike. Demanding teachers were pilloried for “hurting the kids’ feelings.” Parents worried that if anyone spoke the truth, colleges and universities would see our poor scores and reject our kids’ applications. (As if they didn’t already know.)

Enter Steven Fenton and Brian Goldberg four years ago.

Fenton, a Beverly High grad, started shaking things up. Goldberg made one correct vote after another–spotting quickly what needed fixing and told us so. Week after week, he brought out the truth.

For two years, the two were truly voices in the wilderness. The long line of board majorities followed a former board member’s prescription for each school board in a letter to The Courier: The board’s duty is to select a superintendent and step back. That was the rejection of accountability. According to them and the remainder of the apologists who ran our district, our problems were the result of parents not wanting their girls to go to college; kids partying; principals unwilling to enforce anything because they would not be backed; not enough self-esteem classes. The district’s mission statement omitted any mention whatsoever of academic achievement.

In the meantime, we went through nearly a superintendent a year. Right now, one – Jeffrey Hubbard – is facing criminal prosecution for alleged misdeeds in office here. The project manager this group hired, supported and cheered by former board members and one current member, took months to raise her bail as she undergoes her criminal trial. Federal money had to be given back.

Construction funds from the state had to be refunded. Hundreds of thousands of dollars of school lunch money could not be accounted for. Fenton and Goldberg protested, but were systematically and regularly overruled. Then, in 2009 Lisa Korbatov and Jake Manaster joined the board.

Korbatov, essentially an irate Beverly Hills mom–furious about conditions at the schools–followed the best traditions of American democracy and stood for office. She walked away with the election.

One of her first acts after being sworn in was to vote to elect Fenton president of the school board. She became vice president and now president. Joined by Goldberg, they started a program to reestablish academic excellence in our schools and the critics be d-----d. They tore into financial misdeeds, replaced principals and administrators.

They demanded accountability. All along, the chorus of the old guard kept singing, “You’re ruining the district.” Well, they weren’t.

They were saving it.

Their efforts were capped by recruiting the superintendent of the top-performing academic school district in California for nine years running – Gary Woods of San Marino Unified. This is clearly one of Korbatov’s crowning achievements. People forget that this board’s predecessor board passed over Woods in favor of short-term Keri McVeigh. Well, second time is a charm (we hope). Even though San Marino is full of wealthy people, San Marino Unified is one of the poorest districts in California. The town has no business, no commercial activities to speak of and no extra money. The people of San Marino (72 percent Republican) voted massive taxes onto themselves to pay for the district and still donate in the seven figures to keep their winning streak alive. In the end, it’s not about money – it’s about the demand for excellence.

We can proudly celebrate the first significant improvement in academic results in Beverly Hills in years. This did not happen by accident. It is the direct result of courageous reform efforts by Fenton, Goldberg and Korbatov – joined increasingly by Jake Manaster . . . even Myra Lurie has become something of a convert.

Our community has a huge investment in our school district.

This group is leading us back. There is a long way to go (see the remaining gap between San Marino and BHUSD), but as much as possible we need to give credit where it is due. This has been the right team at the right time at the right place. Keep going.

LETTERS The danger of secondhand smoke has been recognized and addressed by restrictions on smoking in public places. Office buildings and even LAX are smoke free.

The next step is to restrict smoking in multifamily residential buildings.

I live above a smoker who bought his unit after I lived in mine 5-1/2 years. After spending quite a bit of money on my part and trying various solutions, cigarette smoke coming through the heating and A/C ducts has been reduced but not eliminated. I am at the smoker’s mercy. If he forgets to turn on his exhaust fan and keep it running, I get smoke in my unit.

My downstairs neighbor has had health problems and can’t make it to the balcony.

However, he can make it into the bathroom with an exhaust fan where he knows the smoke ends up going into my unit. I guess he doesn’t want the smoke remaining in his own unit.

Where is the fairness of that?

I have a daughter who has been diagnosed with cancer living with me. Neither one of us want to be forced to inhale second-hand smoke in our own home.

Laws should be enacted to prohibit smoking in residential units in multifamily buildings or at the very least smoking should be limited to top floor units.

Janet Goldberg ****** I live in the 500 block of Walden Drive, where we have received notice of street repairs on the full length of Walden and Whittier all the way to Sunset from Tuesday through today.

To the unenlightened, before this project began there appeared to be only a few superficial cracks and no unrepaired potholes on Walden.

Why did the City spending our funds in this way at this time?

A notice left on my door stated: “Why Beverly Hills is doing this work at this time?

The City of Beverly Hills is conducting this work as part of its street rehabilitation program to maintain the quality of the City’s infrastructure.”

I find that answer unsatisfactory. I’d like to know the cost of this project, who okayed it, and why?

I have seen other streets in Beverly Hills much more in need of repair than this one.

Parts of the north side of Santa Monica Boulevard, westbound along the parkway, are in very bad shape.

By going forward on Walden, all our residents were inconvenienced the past few days with noise (especially the “grinding”), dirt and no street for no apparent reason.

Rabbi Jacob Pressman THE MILK OF HUMAN KINDNESS Did you ever wonder why we associate human kindness with milk? It is because when the female of the species nurses her offspring, she is literally giving a part of herself to another human being, without any expectation of compensation. You read and hear the news as well as I, and you know what enormous challenges have confronted the human race even in these past few months. There have been volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, hurricanes, famines, torrential floods and raging forest fires all over the world, with resultant human misery and loss wherever we looked.

At the same time we have been experiencing a phenomenon placing us but a little lower than the angels: the milk of human kindness. Each human disaster has been met by the selflessness of people who come to the aid of other people. To the sites of the recent floods, perfect strangers have come by boat, plane, auto and bicycle to help alleviate the suffering of others. They don’t have to. There is no law on the books that reads: “Leave the comfort of your home, the society of your loved ones, the wages of your jobs and go into disaster areas and save your fellow stranger.” People risk their lives, crawl under mounds of concrete and bricks because a baby’s cry has been heard from under the rubble, and perhaps the child can be saved. People pole crude rafts over the floodwaters and risk drowning to save a stranger caught in a house in the midst of rising waters. These heroes and heroines will go unrecorded and unheralded in the book of human kindness.

It is scarcely a comparison, but in my ninetieth year my heart has swelled with pride in the human race as strangers, young and old, come running to assist me cross a street, climb some steps, get a tray of food. They do it with a smile, dismissing my thank-yous with a demurrer: “Please, it was my pleasure.” That human quality, the quality of the nursing mother, the helpful Boy Scout, the brawny tough who rushes to help me fold my walker and climb into a car, has made my senior years livable, bathing me in the milk of human kindness.

So, as you read the incessant bad news of the day, take comfort in the fact that that milk will never curdle and grow dry, if we, in our turn, keep it flowing.

It has been reported the City is in the process of drafting a new noise ordinance–one desperately needed since presently there seems to be little or no control over the disturbance thrust upon neighbors by a resident giving a large party.

Oh sure, a few days before the event we receive the usual letter–often accompanied by a token gift–informing us of the date and apologizing in advance for any inconvenience.

Sometimes we are even “invited” to evacuate our homes to spend a night at a hotel at the partygiver’s expense.

Regardless of the party’s

hours, it is mandatory that strict regulations be made and enforced to assure that noise levels do not exceed acceptable decibel levels. But what is acceptable–the kingpin question which needs to be addressed.

How ironic is it that hosts will apologize for a forthcoming event believing that–by doing so–they are justified without any guilty conscience to entertain a full blast without giving a second thought to the fact they are disturbing the peace and quiet of the surrounding neighborhood.
