HELPING POLICE FAMILIES—Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca, Attorney Tom Girardi, award recipients Annette Bening and Warren Beatty, LAPPL President Paul Webber, Eagle and Badge Gala Chair Arthur Kassel at the Eagle and Badge Foundation gala Tuesday at the LA Live Marriott Hotel. Other awardees included The Metropoulous Family of Beverly Hills, owners of Pabst Brewing Company, the Buss family and Coach Mike Brown of the Los Angeles Lakers. The gala benefited the Eagle and Badge Foundation, which is a philanthropic organization created by the members and supporters of the Los Angeles Police Protective League that provides benefits and scholarships to Los Angeles Police Officers and their family members.

By The Courier Staff The Beverly Hills Unified School District achieved its first major improvements in academic performance in many years according to state of California test scores released Wednesday. The current Beverly Hills Unified School District Board of Education majority, comprised of President Lisa Korbatov, Vice President Brian Goldberg and member Steven Fenton, joined on many matters by member Jake Manaster, during the last two years made changes in leadership, approach, mission statement and accountability when Korbatov was elected to the board in 2009. Fenton was then elected president of the board and implemented many changes, which were vigorously disputed by previous members. (see ‘API,’ page 20)

By Courier Staff The Beverly Hills Tournament of Roses Committee submitted a comprehensive financial report to the City of Beverly Hills. The report set forth every deposit, every donation and every expenditure of

BHUSD Celebrates New and Old During Opening Day Festivities By Marla Schevker The Beverly Hills Unified School District welcomed its teachers back this week with an opening day ceremony Wednesday. Beginning with a breakfast sponsored by the PTA Council, teachers mingled and greeted each other before sitting in the K.L. Peters Auditorium to meet new

BHUSD staff, including Superintendent Gary Woods, and celebrate the long-time service of other staff members. Woods told the BHUSD staff teaching is his passion and he believes the BHUSD’s core work should be “teaching and learning (see ‘OPENING DAY,’ page 19)
