Courier Fashion Director Talks Fashion, Future By Marla Schevker Fashion makes up a huge part of who we are. Courier Fashion Director Tawny Sanders says it’s not only a reflection of the times we’re living in, but it also inspires creativity, individualism and free thinking. That is what she tries to reflect with The Courier’s Fashion Forward!
“The fashion section has brought everybody together because fashion is such a big part of Beverly Hills,” Sanders said. An important part of being in a community, even one of fashionistas, is to be aware. In this economy, Sanders said, people are concerned about the way (see ‘SANDERS,’ page 17)

Oh, So Zoe
Rachel Zoe launches new clothing line at Neiman Marcus. By Joanne Galey
H er carefree long blonde locks are framed with dark, oversized sunglasses, layers of gold chains adorn her neckline, and a clatter of diamond bangles sparkle on her wrist. Her now signature "hectic, 70's inspired, boho-chic look" has been duplicated by celebrities and adoring fans alike and the tireless Hollywood stylist seems to be surpassing some of her own clients in terms of celebrity status.
"R achel Zoe is a brand that creates brands" - says Todd Shemarya, Rachel's agent and the man who plans to reinvent Zoe. "Fashion is now bigger than the movie business. It's a world that has no end. And yet, nobody can guess who their customer is. Every fashion house is looking for a formula and Rachel has a formula" he states.
Z oe seems to bring new meaning to the term "over achiever". A brief tally of her recent accomplishments include TV host to her own reality show, The Rachel Zoe Project (now in its 4th season on Bravo), style consultant for Piperlime shoes and handbags, author of style bible "Style A to Zoe", face of Samsung's BlackJack cell phone ad campaign, creator of clothing line for QVC, collaboration with Judith Leiber to create a line of luxury handbags. Oh and new mom of Skyler! Not forgetting she still manages to keep her "day job" as stylist to the stars, Rachel has now officially launched her own clothing line which includes handbags and shoes. "This is a completely different line from anything else I'm doing", said Zoe at the recent showing of her 2011 Fall collection hosted by Neiman Marcus, Beverly Hills.
A
s for her future? Rachel already has plans in the works to expand into a full lifestyle brand. And one thing we can be sure of - she'll be doing it in style.

B E V E R LY H I L L S M A I N N E W S H O N O R A R Y BARISTA—As store manager Jon Efe looks on, Make-AWish recipient Mallory Smith prepares to enjoy a Skinny Vanilla Latte she made as part of her honorary barista training. Starbucks, through the Make-AWish Foundation, granted her wish for “Starbucks for a year,” presenting the Beverly Hills resident with a personalized gold card.
Make A Wish Comes Through At Local Starbucks Last Sunday, the Make-AWish Foundation of Greater Los Angeles granted a wish for a young woman with the help of Starbucks. Beverly Hills resident, 18-year-old Mallory Smith’s wish was a practical one for a college student. She wished for a year of coffee from Starbucks. Despite battling cystic fibrosis, Smith is very active, attending classes at Stanford and playing on the school’s club volleyball team, which competes against collegiate programs in California and Nevada. Starbucks is her favorite
coffee destination because she said no matter where she goes she can “something familiar in unfamiliar places.” “This is so amazing that they pulled all this together,” Smith said. “I had no idea what the wish was going to be or how it was going to look. It's so incredible they gave me this opportunity. I'm so grateful to both Starbucks and Make-AWish." The day began at the Starbucks on North Beverly Drive. She had a tasting of iced Soy Chai Latte followed by an honorary barista training on to
make a Skinny Vanilla Latte. She also received a “special gift card” with enough value to enjoy a Starbucks beverage each day for a year. “When we were contacted by the Make-A-Wish Foundation, everyone at Starbucks was excited to be a part of granting Mallory's wish,” Starbucks store manager Jon Efe said. “My team was thrilled to have the chance to host her in our store and enhance her wish by teaching her how to make her favorite beverage.” NEW BEGINNINGS— BHUSD Superintendent Dr. Gary Woods, Horace Mann PTA President Howard Goldstein and Principal Steve Kessler welcomes 125 new families to the Husky Nation at the Horace Mann Ice Cream Social on Saturday afternoon.

Rexford Dr. • The day’s events will begin with BH firemen and honor guard standing at attention at the memorial unveiling at 6:45 a.m., around the time the first World Trade Center tower fell. • A BH Police Department honor guard detail, bagpipers, a 21-gun salute, fly over and flagraising ceremony will highlight the 4 p.m. memorial dedication. The Keynote speaker will be Brad Burlingame, brother of Charles F. Burlingame III, com-
mander of the U.S. Navy, who piloted Flight 77. The twisted beam from The World Trade Center that highlights the memorial was personally selected by Chief Tim Scranton. The Memorial Park features representation of all three 9/11 sites: Twin Towers, Pentagon and Shanksville. Twelve stainless-steel plaques list the names of the 2,997 9/11 victims. The memorial was privately funded and all the construction and design work was donated. The memorial was designed by Jim Ply. Oak Crest Landscape/details by Gidas Peteris, Peteris Architects Inc. General contractor was Peter McCoy Construction.
Crisis Response Team Looking For Volunteers Whenever there is a traumatic incident in Beverly Hills, Culver City or its surrounding areas, the Crisis Response Team is there to help the civilians. They spend a few hours with people when they are in a vulnerable emotional place and hope that they are able to make a difference.
Now the Crisis Response Team needs help. According to CRT Supervisor David Singer, the organization is looking for new members. Singer said that volunteers are given a great opportunity. “You learn a lot about the community organizations that are out there,” Singer said. “It
gives you a certain level of training and how to deal with all of these different things that happen, the daily tragedies of life.” Although the program was once a part of The Maple Counseling Center, during the tough economic times TMCC (see ‘CRT,’ page 17)

The Nosh Now Open For Dinner Good news for those who like deli fare with a twist at an iconic City restaurant—The Nosh is now serving dinner. Owners Ron Magnin and David Laredo have added menu items like flatiron steak, grilled salmon and vegetable lasagna to keep their clientele happy at supper time. Served from 4:30-9:30 p.m., offerings also include Grandma Gayle’s Brisket Sliders with lean brisket, potato pancakes and jack cheese, served with au jus. “It just flies out the door,” says Magnin. To make a visit easy for families, there’s a kid-friendly menu. Opened in 1975, the restaurant is known for its bagels. “They’re our calling card,” says Laredo. The bagels are mixed with GMOfree flour, hand rolled, boiled and baked on the premises beginning at 2 a.m., for the restaurant’s menu items, customers to take home and local hotels, like The Peninsula. Muffins, buns, pastries (like the Danish) and desserts (including their famous chocolate chip cookie dough cheesecake) are also housemade. “Most restaurants don’t bake their own staples,” Laredo said. When Laredo and Magnin took over the restaurant five-and-a-half years ago they remodeled the entire restaurant—now with snappy orange booths—and replaced every ingredient. Their health-conscious drive means The Nosh serves organic coffee and teas, natural free-range chicken with no hormones, line-caught tuna and grass-fed
ground beef. Following their farm-to-table goals, they buy local produce and domestic beer and wine from sustainable wineries. The pastrami comes from the same supplier as Langer’s. Both with restaurant backgrounds, Magnin and Laredo jumped at the opportunity to buy the restaurant. “It had good bones and the best bagels on the Westside,” said Laredo. For Magnin, a Beverly Hills native who as a child rode his bike to the restaurant, it was a mater of “not liking to see things go away.” He also enjoys “making people happy by feeding them”and the chance to “literally talk to hundreds of people a day.” They bring that personal touch to the restaurant, Laredo says, “with no grumpy servers and a live person always answering the phone.” They’ve created what they consider “not the typical Jewish deli,” but one with all the basics plus the fun of an upto-date diner. “We took it in our own direction,” says Laredo, “we don’t want to emulate anyone else.” Diners can find Mexican dishes and breakfast enchiladas, a myriad of omelettes and even grilled cheese with prosciutto. Other best sellers Laredo says are the burgers, beef or turkey; the ground turkey and bacon hash and the Mediterranean items including the falafel sandwich, “Baba Ga-Nosh” and TX & NY Auctioneer license: Samuel Foose 11727 & 0952360. Warrior–A Martial Arts Opus Following my graduation from NYU, I took a job as a publicist for the Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello Beach Party movies for American International Pictures. Life was great and America the “gem of the ocean.” And then, times changed and American cinema went through a metamorphoses. Movies were now entering a manifestation of gratuitous sex and leading the way, as movies do, to more vivid and decadent story lines. Four-letter words filled the screen, nudity and acts of overt sex were rampant, gunplay and blood spurting vividly from every orifice of the body rocked the innocence of a virtuous nation. A whole new American generation was now privy to the seamier part of life. Dog fights, rooster fights, a nebulous judicial system, screwed up jurists, ponzi schemes, recession, regression, Frank and Jamie McCourt, etc., etc., etc. And now, mixed martial arts….. a travesty to the name of sport. The setup is two men whose muscles are in all the right places and a referee in the cage. Yes, a cage, which is the place wild, dangerous animals are usually kept. The three of them enter. The two warriors shake hands (if they want to) and then use every conceivable move to disembowel his opponent. They start to fight. First with their fists and then wrestle and fiercely kick the other guy and bring him to his knees (metal cups protect the vulnerable parts). And, then the fighting gets dirty. With one guy on the floor, blood coming from his cranium, the other continues to hammer his fists into the unfortunate opponents face, or crack every bone in his body until he cries “uncle” or the ref decides death is inevitable and stops the massacre. Warrior is about two brothers who are former martial arts fighters. Tommy (Tom Hardy) is home from Iraq and Brendan (Joel Edgerton) a married schoolteacher. Both are alienated from their father, Paddy (Nick Nolte), due to his violent temper and constant drinking, and estranged from each other. As fate would have it, Tommy and Brendan need money and decide, independently, to return to train him and keep it professional and not personal. What happens from then on is predictable unless you have been in the Movie Protection Program and never allowed to see a film. Tom Hardy does a more than credible performance as the brooding ex-marine. He is the reincarnate of Paul Newman’s wonderful characterization of boxing great Rocky Graziano in Somebody Up There Likes Me, and Marlon Brando’s performance as a washed up fighter in On The Waterfront. In fact, if they ever do a remake of the latter, he should be the leading candidate to play Terry Malloy. It’s a cliché-ridden picture but thanks to Gavin O’Connor’s direction, Hardy’s acting and the always terrific, Nolte, it isn’t as bad as I made it out to be. 2 and a half Bagels out of 4

Majestic’s stadium would be constructed on 600 undeveloped acres in the City of Industry they already own. The $800 million, 75,000-seat (expandable to 80,000 for Super Bowls) certified “green” stadium would anticipate the return of the NFL to the nation’s secondlargest media market. No team has called Los Angeles “home” since 1995 when both the Raiders and Rams turned tail and fled to Oakland and St. Louis, respectively. AEG’s $1.2 billion project has a naming sponsor (Farmers Insurance Company), conceptual approval by the Los Angeles City Council and starfilled press conferences, stealing at least the most recent thunder from the Industry project. Regardless of what project is chosen, both will bring jobs and football to Los Angeles. The team competition is now most intense between developers. However, Semcken said he feels the City of Industry project has definite advantages over the downtown project. Having worked on the proposed stadium since 2008, Semcken said they

know what is important to the NFL and what makes a good stadium. “We have designed a project they want without compromise,” Semcken said. “Our project guarantees that the owner of the Los Angeles team – in fact it will probably be two teams – will be among the top ten wealthiest owners in the league. From a financial perspective, ours is best. “Also important to the NFL is the quality of the fan experience and we offer so much in this area. With television and the development of 3D programming, people can sit at home and not only watch their team play, they can watch every team play. “We have to create an experience that will bring people to the stadium. We have 600 acres that can be used as needed to enhance the fan experience. We will have concert stages, grassy areas for tailgating, television monitors where fans can watch the morning games, a BMX bike area – it will be like Super Bowl Sunday every Sunday.” Los Angeles City Council President Pro Tem Jan Perry said AEG’s proposed stadium project would bring a significant amount of new jobs to the Los Angeles area. “It’s an important project not only for Los Angeles but

given the scope, the magnitude and the number of jobs it will bring to the region, I think it has importance for the entire west coast,” she said. “This may be the largest employment project we have for the foreseeable future.” AEG is currently pushing legislation through the legislature that will “set up some guidelines so frivolous lawsuits can be avoided,” Perry said. “It still upholds the California Environmental Quality Act.” Translation: no lawsuits by asking the state to limit the amount of time allowed for any legal challenge to approximately 180 days. That at least would put a cap on the number of strike suits, nuisance suits and “hold ups” AEG would face. Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Atonovich has publically stated he opposes any special protection from the state for the downtown stadium. Antonovich’s press deputy, Tony Bell, said the supervisor does not believe that any developer should get exemptions unless those exemptions are also given to vital projects like schools, libraries, and other public projects. The bill AEG now seeks is similar to the one Majestic obtained in 2009.
BEVERLY HILLS Overall, Semcken argues his project will be in the best location for everybody and makes the NFL the number one priority. Majestic’s stadium would not share location with the Lakers, the Clippers, LA Live or anything else. It would also not require demolition of the existing West Hall of the Los Angeles Convention Center like the AEG proposal does. “They [the NFL] are the big dog. [If they use our stadium, they] are not competing with other buildings, with other events – it’s all NFL all the time,” Semcken said. “We’re doing everything we can to bring the NFL back to Southern California as soon as possible and we think the best way to do that is to build the best building for the team, the league and the fans and we think we have done that. “There are 6.3 million people who live within an hour’s drive of Jerry Jones’s new Dallas Stadium. There are 15.5 million people who live within an hour’s drive of our site. “Put in different terms: one of every 19 people in the country lives within an hour’s drive of our site on Sunday morning.” AEG did not return The Courier’s calls for comment.

promotions across Los Angeles, has brought 17 of L.A.’s top gourmet trucks to fuel hungry shoppers on Rodeo and Beverly Drive with an eclectic selection of tastes. That is more than double the number of trucks Rodeo Drive had last year; so shoppers can treat themselves to an array of snacks, sweets and even fresh flowers. Some trucks will bring parts of America to Rodeo Drive that night, with Lobsta Truck and Greasy Weiner. For hot dog fans, Greasy Weiner is the ideal pick with their New Jersey style dogs. Exclusively for FNO, the truck is presenting a Special Edition FNO hot dog topped with black beans, grilled white onions, and a red homemade spicy sauce. For the kids, Tino’s Pizza Truck is always a favorite with its hand-tossed pizzas. Guests also have the option of breakfast for dinner at the Buttermilk Truck, which serves fluffy pancakes and French toast all day. The truck has created a Special Edition FNO red velvet Whoopie Pie for the evening. Chef Chris Goossen, previously of Bottega Louie in downtown, presents the Knockout Taco Truck, with an array of authentic and global tacos. Special Edition FNO tacos include spicy shrimp with a red sauce served on a black tortilla, and rock shrimp in a cream sauce topped with caviar on a white tortilla. To top it all off, foodies will be able to indulge in desserts from Sprinkles Cupcakes, which will be bringing FNO exclusive cupcakes to Rodeo Drive. Waffles De Liege will be serving fresh Belgian waffles topped with vanilla ice cream, strawberries, whipped cream, chocolate syrup, and a custom chocolate FNO garnish for their Special Edition dish. Joan Mangum It was an entertaining evening benefiting Crohn's & Colitis Foundation L.A. The Improv was the location for Pain In The Butt, comedian Ben Morrison's critically acclaimed show about the lighter side of Crohn's disease. He chronicles his journey from awkward high school student to awkward high school student with a disease. He took a very serious disease and conveyed to the audiences that once
he joked about and spoke openly about having Crohn's, he was in control, not the disease. He told about visiting with children who have Crohn's and ulcerative colitis at Camp Oasis and how he had even the shy children stand up and share their stories... and how being open about their disease gave them power. The show, staged all over the world during the last eight years, is a touching tale about laughing
through illness. ****** It was a “Wild and Wonderful Walton Wedding!”... as friends, family as well as Walton clan members, were gathering in celebration of Mary McDonough's 50th birthday (that's right little Erin Walton is 50!!!). But the surprise was for her guests. In a case where life reflects art, just as Erin surprised the family by running off to get married, so now has Mary McDonough surprised friends and family with impromptu nuptials. As they gathered in a private dining room (Maggiano's at The Grove), McDonough's fiance, Don, clinked a glass to make a toast to Mary, saying he had been thinking about what to get Mary for her birthday and decided to end their long (seven year) engagement... by asking her to marry him, “Right here, right now.” On bended knee he did just that. Mary said “yes” as the room was filled with screams and laughter. Don asked Mary's brothers, Michael and John to stand up for him. Mary turned to her own daughter, Sydnee, and Don's daughters Kylie and Robyn to do the same for her. Then bouquets and boutineers were brought out to the shock and the delight of all gathered. Waltons
in attendance included, Michael Learned, Eric Scott, Jon Walmsley, Judy Norton, and David Harper. Learned, Mary's mama on The Waltons and other cast members were in tears along with others in the room. A honeymoon will be planned after she concludes the tour for her memoirs entitled, Lessons From The Mountains, What I Learned From Erin Walton. In fact, McDonough had delayed the celebration of her 50th birthday to accommodate the first leg of her book tour (including appearances at Dollywood, Grand Ole Opry, The Kennedy Center, etc.) ****** California's famed Jr. Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by B.H. attorney Gary S. Greene held its 74th Anniversary Concert Spectacular at The Music Center's Dorothy Chandler Pavilion with Wink Martindale as emcee along with guest hosts Jack Carter and June Lockhart. Special performances included the extremely talented Jordan Bennett singing This Is The Moment from Jekyll And Hyde and Anthem from Chess, as well as Victoria Gordon singing Jekyll And Hyde's Someone Like You and Petri Hawkins-Byrd's outstanding rendition of What A Wonderful World. Among the
BEVERLY HILLS evening's highlights was Grammy and Emmy-winning composer, Charles Fox, who conducted many of his hit compositions from Nine To Five, European Vacation, Oh God: Book II and Babarella, as well as a TV medley of his hit theme songs from The Wide World Of Sports, Love American Style, Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, Wonder Woman and Love Boat. While Fox received an award for his outstanding career achievements, presented by friend, colleague and Oscar- winning composer Richard Sherman, top honors for the evening went to Broadway legend Carol Channing, who was presented with The Golden Baton. At 90 years of age, Carol’s presence, voice and personality was so large, it literally filled the stage, flowed over the audience and into the balcony... a fabulous evening. ****** The Mannequins of L.A., a group of professional women who have combined their resources from the world of fashion to present fashion shows at events for charities and private organizations, held a tea at Barneys New York. The guest speaker was the charming and acclaimed dermatologist/internist Dr. David Colbert, who spoke about how to combat effects of age with health and beauty secrets of smart carbs, A+fat, intelligent fiber and star proteins. His Colbert MD Skin Care Products line provides daily nutrition for the skin and he has authored “The High School Reunion Diet,” a pure foods program designed to make the user look slimmer, healthier and younger in just 30 days... definitely every woman's dream. Some of the many Mannequins beauties enjoying these beauty secrets... ment has a mutual aide agreement with surrounding cities to help in the case of largescale disasters. But more so, the City has provided employees to help on other occasions. For example, Kosterman said Beverly Hills has provided Community Development Personnel to coordinate building code amendments on a regional level and sends staff to other cities to help prepare them for audits of their processes and services. Employees who assist other cities on this level are paid for by the City of Beverly Hills. Mirisch said he does not think Beverly Hills should be
sending employees to help Bell. “I think (sending Beverly Hills employees to Bell) shows extremely bad judgment,” Mirisch said. “We have our own major issues in the City, including a salary scandal. To be sending our staff on our own dime to Bell is wrong. We have our own issues, our own problems and our own challenges and we should be dealing with (them) first.” Mirisch said he would not only support any City staff who want to volunteer their time, without pay, he would join them. This issue will be discussed during the City Council Study Session, starting at 2 p.m. in the council chambers at City Hall. The discussion is item four on the agenda.

they spend money. “There are a lot of people in Beverly Hills who are very sensitive to the economical environment,” Sanders said. “Fashion doesn’t have to be about spending a lot of money. Fashion (is just) about an awareness and an expression of who you are in today’s times.” Although Sanders said she tries in every shoot to blend expensive and inexpensive pieces, she is planning on doing an upcoming section on resale stores. She will send a stylist into secondhand stores and
create trendy outfits on a budget. “Fashion affects all of us,” Sanders said. “I’m looking at fashion from every angle, not just Rodeo Drive. There are some great deals and great bargains out there. You can look stylist and feel great about yourself without spending a ton of money.” Fashion aficionados who are interested in meeting The Courier’s fashion director will have their chance at the end of the month. Sanders will be making her first personal appearance at Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills on Sept. 24 from 2 to 4 p.m. for a special Jimmy Choo event.

It had all the excitement of the “Great Migration,” those years during the first quarter of the 20th Century when our ancestors made their respective voyages of hope and expectation westward from Europe to the teeming shores of America, the Promised Land, and the wonders of a continent stretched out before them. However, this time our journey went in the reverse direction, from high-energy, mid-town Manhattan, sailing past the Statue of Liberty stoically basking in the glow of the early evening sunset, up the rugged eastern coast of Canada, transiting the vast expanse of the mighty North Atlantic, finally making landfall in
Ireland (to kiss the Blarney Stone) before disembarking at England’s storied port city of Southampton. From the moment one steps aboard the floating country club that is the Silver Whisper–or indeed, any of Silversea’s six small to mid-sized vessels of perfection – it’s clear: this was not your grandparents’ means of conveyance. Service on Silversea is on a nearly one-to-one ratio and, (apologies to parents), there are not hundreds of pre-pubescent children running amuck on deck or in the public rooms. Any two-week cruise featuring six days at sea, four of them consecutive, will test the mettle of even the most ardent cruise
traveler. But whether it be the variety of exercise machines in the fitness center, the array of sensuous treatments found in the fully equipped Silversea Signature Spa, live stage entertainment, movies – in the ship’s theater or the privacy of your suite - lectures, demonstrations, classes or just relaxing in the lap of luxury with a good book attended and to by the friendly, unobtrusive international staff, the days pass by all to quickly. Of course, it helps if one has a bit of romanticized imagination, like on the night we set sail from St. John’s, Newfoundland, the oldest city in North America and gateway to the mighty North Atlantic. It was a film noir kind of evening, colorless except for shades of black and white; a fitting backdrop for an epic ocean transit. A blanket of fog enveloped the ship, so thick that a person standing amidships could not see the bow or stern of the ves-
sel. Shadows disappeared into the swirling mist making it unclear whether the formally attired man walking on the deck several paces ahead was Cary Grant, perhaps, or Peter Lorre or, alas, one of the ship’s butlers formally, attired for the evening. While the Silversea’s six floating sisters are essentially all-inclusive, including fine wine and spirits, one would be remiss not to avail themselves of an intimate evening (there are only six tables) in the ship’s ultra-gourmet Le Champagne restaurant for an exclusive Relais & Chateaux dinner. On every cruise, Le Champagne features a series of menus designed around a central theme: a celebration and collaboration of wine in harmony with various regions of the world, such as France, Italy, Spain and North America. Advance reservations at Le Champagne are a must as the restaurant’s maitre d’sommelier will tell you about upcoming themes and help you select what you wish on your personalized pre-printed menu. Our maitre d’ was Darlene Parker, a knowledgeable New Zealander who told us that Charles Dickens said of the bub-

bly, “Champagne is one of life’s elegant extras,” as she pointed out the homage to champagne etched into an illuminated floor-to-ceiling glass panel at the entrance to the restaurant. This dining experience is available for $200 per person, wine included, with each course. without wine, the cost is an incredibly reasonable $30 per person for a five-course gourmet meal. Of course, free airfare on selected cruises, gourmet meals, a butler assigned to every suite, entertainment, on-board shops, a casino and luxury spa amenities are all items one would expect to find on the world-ranked best ships of Silversea. However, I’m impressed by the unexpected; here’s just a small example. On the first night aboard I went down to dinner, leaving my reading glasses on the desk in my suite. When I returned two hours latter I noted the expected turndown service, slippers along side of the bed and chocolates on the nightstand. But, I couldn’t find my glasses. Finally I noticed a folded square of eyeglass cleaning cloth on the desk and underneath, my glasses. And for the next 13 nights of the cruise, after dinner, that would be where I found my glasses–on the desk, under the neatly folded cleaning cloth. A small thing, perhaps. But it is one of many examples of how, over the years, I’ve come to expect the unexpected on Silversea; I’ve never been disappointed.

Connie Martinson Talks Books
The cookbook sure to sell-out on the Westside is Reyna Simnegar’s Persian Food From The Non-Persian Bride: And Other Kosher Sephardic Recipes You Will Love (Feldheim Publishers, Jerusalem). Reyna was born in Venezuela and came to UCLA where she met her husband, Sammy Simnegar. He suggested she visit his mother’s kitchen and learn to cook his Persian favorites. She did and five children later and living in Brookline, Massachusetts, has written this coffee table cookbook, with its extravagant lovely photographs. This contains the history of the Jews in Iran. She writes: “the main impetus for writing this was to help reignite and preserve the Iranian Jewish heritage for the youth through food… not to mention I want to make sure my future daughters-in-law know how to cook authentic “kebab” and “tadig” for my boys.” The book begins with spices, seeds and herbs used in Persian cooking, as well as instruments necessary for Persian kitchens. This is made clear when you read the recipe for making Lavash bread, which begins with the need for a baker’s peel and a baking stone. A baker’s peel is a spatula to transfer dough in and out of an oven. Two dips are a easy to make, one with olives and mayonnaise and the other with scallions. There is a Persian potato salad which is also claimed by the Russians. But nobody can claim the Persian noodle soup made in large quantities to feed the neighbors, Her husband’s favorite is mini meatballs and zucchini stew. She writes about Sephardic Shabbat stews which is called “cholent.” In the Sephardic, it is known as “Hamim” and how they were left over hot coals with a blanket on top of the pot to keep it warm until after Sabbath. The book is a history book as well as a cookbook with a glossary of English, Farsi and Arabic terms. From the glossary, I am sure they sing “esbet chayil” to her--a woman of valor sung in honor of the wife before the Friday night festive dinner. ****** www.conniemartinson.com aired and streamed at 3 and 11:30 p.m. on www.lacityview.org channel 35 email: talksbooks@lycos.com

OPINION From the Publisher CLIF SMITH IT IS STILL WRONG AND WILL NOT WORK American’s have become accustomed to our own brand of socialism (“Socialism: government ownership of the means and products of production”). With American socialism, government does not take title to assets, it just controls its use and taxes its products to the point of oblivion. We have come to believe that the person sitting over there in some government office building somehow knows better than the people who built, own and run the business. We have been propagandized into believe that this anonymous bureaucrat must be fully in control. Otherwise, we the people will be ripped off or abused or our air polluted. “Government” is given a pass for terrible decisions, poor performance and bad results. That, of course, is the message of the “mainstream media.” Our schools – public and private – back that up every day. Both trot out horror stories of 150 years ago (“the Pullman Strike,” the “Haymarket Riots,” the Chicago meatpacking industry) to support their thesis. Well, in the meantime, these same “evil” businesses provided the jobs, goods and services that produced the money to build our country. Where have those gone? They have gone the only place a rational person examining the facts could possibly conclude: they disappeared. American government at every level has taken to heart Woodrow Wilson’s and Theodore Roosevelt’s diktat to control everything. TR, the great imperialist, after he left the presidency became a radical progressive thundering about corporate abuses as he cashed his dividend checks. Both demanded that government “control” the corporations and “the trusts.” President Barack Obama’s regulators keep on regulating; their ends justify their mean and in Americans lose jobs, too bad. All of this push has overburdened business to the point where it generally struggles to func-
tion. Americans left to their own devices engage in business, we start businesses, we try to build and building means jobs, employment, and profits. Profits mean expansion and growth. Every new regulation, every new tax, every new impost, every tightening of credit makes it harder – perhaps not impossible but definitely harder. Weaker players will succumb and they have. Increasingly stronger players pull back and many of them will not make it. All along, “government” and its Democrat/socialist members and adherents see nothing wrong with this. They are “controlling” an evil, while at the same time demanding more from the producing class. They see no contradiction in this. It is a fatal contradiction. Most have never taken a look at the classical definition of “profit.” “Profit” is the premium one will pay to obtain goods or services one cannot provide or manufacture on one’s own because of cost, time, capital or otherwise. The “profit” is the difference between the cost of producing something and the price that can be obtained for it. Raise costs and profit reduces or shrinks. If you eliminate profit, them progress and growth are impossible. “Profit” provides the resources for them. There is no other source. That is a law and it cannot be changed. Our “government” at every level, from Beverly Hills city hall to the White House, seems determined to raise costs on business, restrict freedom, control activity. It is wrong if financial prosperity and even survival are the goal. We are suffering the unavoidable consequences of that fact. Until the crushing burden of regulations, taxes and government are removed, prosperity will be scattered, more and more businesses will fail, and fewer and fewer people will be able to support themselves. It has always been so and cannot change, no matter how much “social justice” rhetoric comes from the President and his party.
Rabbi Jacob Pressman A FAIR EXCHANGE I found the following suggestion somewhere and I pass it on with the question: “What is your opinion?” Let's put the seniors in jail and the criminals in a nursing home. (Think about it for a few minutes.) This way the seniors would have access to showers, hobbies and walks. They’d receive unlimited free prescriptions, dental and medical treatment, wheel chairs etc. and they’d receive money instead of paying it out. They would have constant video monitoring, so they could be helped instantly if they fell, or needed assistance. Bedding would be washed twice a week, and all clothing would be ironed and returned to them. A guard would check on them every 20 minutes and bring their meals and snacks to their cell. They would have family visits in a suite built for that purpose. They would have access to a library, weight room, spiritual counseling, pool and education. Simple clothing, shoes, slippers, PJ’s and legal aid would be free, on request. Private, secure! rooms for all, with an exercise outdoor yard, with gardens. Each senior could have a PC a TV radio and daily phone calls. There would be a board of directors to hear complaints, and the guards would have a code of conduct that would be strictly adhered to. The “criminals,” who would be sent to a nursing home, would get cold food, be left all alone and unsupervised. Lights off at 8 p.m., and showers once a week. Live in a tiny room and pay $900 per month and have no hope of ever getting out. If you own a nursing home or a jail, don’t get mad at me. I didn’t think it up. I have never been in either –yet.
LETTERS I want to thank Clif Smith for his editorial acknowledging the hard work of the current board majority to identify issues and passing policies, practices and procedures to restore academic excellence, transparency, oversight and accountability to BHUSD. I want to clarify our board majority is larger than just three members. My colleague Jacob Manaster has been an active and important member of this new board majority and shares equally in any success we have been able to accomplish. This truly is a team effort and I am excited about the addition of Dr. Woods to our management team and look forward to working with the community toward our common goal of academic excellence for all our students. Brian D. Goldberg Ph.D. ****** I’m wondering what has
happened to safe and secure Beverly Hills? Based on actual crimes, this is the most dangerous area I have ever lived in (and I have lived in some sketchy areas in my time). The house immediately to our north and the house immediately to our south have both been burglarized. There was a car jacking down the block in front of El Rodeo School. Three houses down and just around the corner the house was recently broken in to and ransacked. Just up the block from us the Holly-wood PR agent was shot and killed. It just seems ironic that I am at greater risk here than I was when I lived in a basement apartment in the West Village in NYC during the late 1960s. Bennett Ross ****** “No one is born or buried in Beverly Hills.” It seems strange to me that
when a city becomes world famous and has millions of sightseeing tourists “visiting” us each year that our City should be profiting financially but I don’t think that is happening. Sightseers collect on the sidewalk near Third Street and Foothill to be picked up by trucks converted into open air sightseeing buses. The company that is doing a huge business in our City sends buses slowly up and down our 29,000 beautiful tree-lined residential streets and then holds up traffic on Rodeo Drive at three miles per hour so visitors can look for movie and TV stars who hopefully shop every day of the week at one of the wold famous local stores which feature very expensive merchandise. It’s a fairy tale come true... for the bus company Herbert Wallerstein

Business Spotlight:
BMW Becomes First Auto Dealer in 25 Years to Move to Los Angeles Beverly Hills BMW understands first-hand the level of customer service the OEBP business team provides. The auto dealership moved its sales showroom to the City in February and, thanks to the unwavering support of the OEBP business team, expanded its operations in the City with the opening of its new service center on July 18, 2011. "Being in Los Angeles offers many benefits to Beverly Hills BMW, but above all is the exceptional support and service we received from the Mayor's Office and the City that made our new opening possible and successful," said Seth Waskow, General Manager of Beverly Hills BMW. "This project had numerous components and a strict timeline that required coordination among many departments. The perseverance and responsiveness of our business representative, Michelle Cervera, in cooperation with Bud Ovrom at Building and Safety, our development consultants at Kindel Gagan, our architects at AHT, and our contractors at Kunzik & Sera, enabled us to move forward on schedule and on budget." Beverly Hills BMW and parent company Sonic Automotive decided to do business in Los Angeles after outgrowing its facility in Beverly Hills. In February, with the support of Mayor Villaraigosa, Council Member Tom LaBonge and Renee Switzer, it hosted the grand opening of its state-or-the-art, $30 million showroom and sales facility on Wilshire Boulevard in LA’s Miracle Mile District, becoming the first auto dealership in more than 25 years to move into Los Angeles. Collectively, auto
dealerships are the largest contributor of sales tax to the City’s budget, with 54 dealerships generating $3.3 billion in sales each year—and $271 million in sales tax. The move enabled Beverly Hills BMW to take advantage of the City’s competitive business policies, including the Business Tax Holiday, which exempts new businesses from gross receipts taxes during the first three years of operation. The company used its increased space to improve its customer experience. One of the largest BMW showrooms in the country, the new facility offers twice the service capacity and increased allocation from the manufacturer. The new service center is located across Wilshire Boulevard. Together, these two facilities are expected to generate $145 million in revenue in 2012. They also created over 700 construction and design-related jobs. 150 permanent employees moved to staff the dealership, and an expected 40-50 additional jobs are expected to be created over the next five years. This influx of well-paying jobs across a range of skill-sets into the City of Los Angeles will help create quality employment opportunities for Angelenos. Beverly Hills BMW is also making its mark on the LA community. This year it donated $25,000 to Wilshire Crest School, and it will match another $25,000 over the next five years. This kind of business leadership is exactly what OEBP works everyday to attract and support in Los Angeles.
