Beverly Hills School Board Divided Over New Science Standards By Laura Coleman Inside Beverly Vista Science teacher Alana Castanon’s 6th grade STEM class, her students breathe a collective sigh of relief as she employs color to differentiate the sides of the two-dimensional orthographic projections she is asking them to pair with their 3-D counterparts. The students, seated around movable science tables, are engaged as Castanon reviews the lesson, asking questions to clarify their understanding and responding to her questions in turn. “This is what it’s all about,” comments Superintendent Steve Kessler from the back of the classroom, highlighting the room setup, the state-of-the-art white board projection screen, and the clearly talented teacher leading the lesson. District-wide, science teachers use Project Lead The Way (PLTW)

curriculum to teach their STEM courses. Embedded in PLTW lesson plans, Kessler said, are the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) which the State Board of Education adopted three years ago for California public school K-12 classes. To date, the Beverly Hills Unified School District has not begun to use textbooks, study guides or lesson plans that have been specifically designed around the new standards. Those products are still in their infancy. On Tuesday, in anticipation of moving forward in adopting NGSS district-wide–a move supported by the superintendent–the board convened a study session which included a comprehensive presentation by former BHUSD student, parent, and teacher David Seidel, who currently works as the Deputy (see ‘SCIENCE STANDARDS’ page 20)

and the Federal Election Commission Thursday. The complaint alleges the Committee violated federal law by accepting contributions from The Wanda Group, a Chinese company owned by Chairman Wang Jianlin, that is prohibited from interfering in local elections. Election laws are very clear in the prohibition against foreign interference in an election in this country, precisely to prevent this type of manipulation. Section 441e of the FECA prohibits foreign nationals from making contributions, (see ‘WANDA COMPLAINT’ page 20)

Hilton Spokeswoman Responds To Sexist Slur In Mayor’s Online Blog By Victoria Talbot Mayor John Mirisch was called to account for his sexist slurs Tuesday evening in a moving presentation by Hilton consultant Marie Garvey. The mayor’s comments were made in a nearly 3,000word diatribe written for the Huffington Post last Friday entitled The Hilton Chronicles: Seven Strikes and You’re Out. The blog is one of several written by “John Mirisch, Mayor of Beverly Hills” for the online publication. The majority of which chronicle the mayor’s relentless villianization of the Hilton Initiative. Friday’s blog, however, went beyond roasting the proj-

ect or even an individual, which Mirisch has done before. This one turned sexist and misogynistic against Garvey, whom Mirisch hardly knows. On Tuesday evening, Garvey filled out a card for public comment and walked to the podium. Here is her statement, in full: “Good evening. My name is Marie Garvey and I have been the public relations and media consultant for The Beverly Hilton for the past 13 years. That said, I am speaking tonight as an individual, a private citizen and most importantly as a woman and mother. (see ‘MIRISCH BLOG’ page 23)

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING The Council of the City of Beverly Hills, at its meeting to be held on Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at 7:00 p.m., or as soon thereafter as the matter may be heard, in the Council Chamber of the City Hall, 455 N. Rexford Drive, Beverly Hills, CA 90210, will hold a public hearing to consider: AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF BEVERLY HILLS AMENDING THE BEVERLY HILLS MUNICIPAL CODE SECTION 10-3-100 AND ADDING SECTION 10-3-1620.2 TO CREATE REGULATIONS REGARDING ANCILLARY USES TO BUSINESSES IN COMMERCIAL ZONES The zone text amendment is proposed in relation to a request to allow a pet wellness center to occupy approximately 285 square feet of the floor area in a 10,200 square foot retail establishment located in the C-3T-2 zone at 9153 Olympic Boulevard. The pet wellness center would provide services such as animal nail clipping, microchipping of pets, vaccinations, and diet consultations for pets. The proposed Ordinance would amend portions of the Beverly Hills Municipal Code (BHMC). The proposed zone text amendment would add a new article to the BHMC to establish regulations pertaining to ancillary uses in commercial zones. A definition for ancillary use would be added to BHMC §10-3-100. The proposed Zone Text Amendment would also amend the BHMC to add §10-3-1620.2 to establish a process through which a property owner could establish an ancillary use. Ancillary uses that do not fit the criteria outlined in the code would require the approval of a Conditional Use Permit in order to establish the ancillary use. Currently, the code contains no specific provisions that allow ancillary uses in commercial zones. This Ordinance has been preliminarily assessed in accordance with the authority and criteria contained in the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), the State CEQA Guidelines, and the environmental regulations of the City. The City Council will consider the adoption and implementation of the Ordinance to be exempt from CEQA pursuant to Section 15061(b)3 because it can be seen with certainty that there is no possibility that the activity in question would have a significant effect on the environment. Adoption and implementation of the Ordinance is eligible for a class 5 categorical exemption pursuant to Section 15305 of Title 14 of the California Code of Regulations for minor changes in land use limitations and will not have a significant environmental impact. Any interested person may attend the meeting and be heard or present written comments to the Council. At the public hearing, the City Council will hear and consider all comments. B E V E R LY H I L L S M A I N N E W S DINNER FOR A CAUSE—On Saturday, the Beverly Vista Bulldog Benefactors - a group of Beverly Vista parents dedicated to raising money for specific projects - held a Farm-to-Table Dinner to raise money for technology. Hosted at a private residence in Beverly Hills, the Bulldog Benefactors raised money for technology infrastructure and devices for Beverly Vista students. Money raised from the event will be used to purchase technology for the 2016/2017 school year. Bulldog Benefactors Raise 57K At Inaugural Event By Laura Coleman On the last day of the 2015-16 school year, a group of Beverly Vista parents met with Principal Christian Fuhrer to express mounting concerns about the future of the K-8 school. Recalled BV parent Ike Zekaria: “We heard that class sizes were being increased, technology teachers were being laid off, and health education was being removed from the curriculum. Instead of passively watching these changes being made, we wanted to take matters into our own hands and raise the money needed to keep us competitive with neighboring school districts and LAUSD. Our children at BV had a 5 to 1 portable computer per student ratio

when many neighboring schools were already at 1 to 1. This had to change.” From that night, a group called the Beverly Vista Bulldog Benefactors was born. Its mission was simple: raise money for the school to support student needs with an emphasis on technology. This past weekend, the group held its inaugural fundraiser–a Farm-to-Table Dinner to raise money for technology. The sold-out event, which included an exquisite four-course dinner in a private Beverly Hills home along with big-ticket auction items, yielded in excess of $57,000. All of that money will go towards technology at Beverly Vista. “We wanted to bring the BV community together and

deliver a great event where parents would have a blast and where we could raise great money for BV technology,” Zekaria said. “In fact, the event was such a success, that after the fact, parents who weren't able to attend contributed to the cause just because they wanted to be part of the solution. Fuhrer confirmed that as a result, the district is now going out for bids on Google Chromebooks and Apple iPads. “We need to move into the technological world; we need not to be behind,” said Fuhrer, who helped implement one-toone iPads for students at Hawthorne several years ago. “Every kid is going to have the opportunity to have a device in their hand.”

City Of Beverly Hills Fails to Achieve Civil or Impartial Debate On Hilton Initiative By Victoria Talbot Next Thursday’s scheduled community forum to debate the merits of the Hilton Initiative appears unlikely to take place, given that no one from the Hilton has agreed to participate in the absence of a fair framework. “The City was proposing a fair and impartial forum and there is no way this can be accomplished,” stated a release by the Hilton. “The Mayor [John Mirisch] has been consistently biased against Measure HH in every City forum we have participated in and we will not be involved in a City-sponsored debate that validates his distortion of facts.” Beverly Hills Community Outreach Manager Huma Ahmed confirmed that unless

the City receives speaker participant forms from backers of Measure HH (commonly known as the Hilton Initiative) by 5 p.m. today, the forum will not occur. The initiative forum was to have been moderated by the League of Women Voters at City Hall on Thursday, Sept. 29 from 7-8:30 in Council Chambers. It would have been televised and recorded. “Should a sufficient number of speaker names be submitted (for either side) by [today’s] deadline, then the Ad Hoc will schedule a meeting to review and determine an appropriate course of action,” Ahmed wrote in an email. As of yesterday, none of the signatories in favor or (see ‘HILTON FORUM’ page 23)

CHEERS TO CHARLIE— The City of Beverly Hills thanked Public Works Associate Project Manager Charlie Ackerman for 28 years of service Tuesday at City Council. Ackerman started in 1988 as a building mechanic. He was soon promoted to maintenance supervisor before moving into project management and eventually, associate project manager. Over the past three decades, Ackerman has worked on many capital improvement projects including Greystone Mansion and Gardens, renovations at Will Rogers Park and Arnaz Mini Park and most recently, building the beloved Beverly Hills Community Dog Park. Wishing him a happy retirement are (from left): City employees Craig Crowder, Theresa Angel, Timothea Tway, Tania Schwartz, Charlie Ackerman, Robert Badmagharian, Dennis Dalan, Ani Keshishian and Brad Meyerowitz.

City Seeks Input On Coldwater Canyon Park Playground By Victoria Talbot The City of Beverly Hills Recreation and Parks Commission (RCP) is seeking public input on the Coldwater Canyon Park playground renovation at their regular meeting Sept. 27 at 2 p.m. The City confirms that the playground equipment is at the end of its anticipated life span and will require replacement. At Roxbury Park, the equipment underwent renovation recently with the old equipment recycled for use in

a disadvantaged playground. The RPC is interested in public input to help make decisions that best suit the families who use the park. The public is encouraged to come to the regular Recreation and Parks Commission meeting at City Hall to present their ideas for new innovative play equipment to the commission. Free 2-hour parking is available across the street. For further information call 310285-2537.

Planning Commission Chair Shooshani Openly Hostile To Hilton At Wanda SEIR Meeting Can Planning Commission be impartial when three of its members have signed anti-Hilton Initiative arguments? By Victoria Talbot A second Planning Commission meeting on the 9900 Wilshire Specific Plan, commonly known as Wanda’s One Beverly Hills project, deteriorated into a shouting match Monday evening when Commission Chair Joe Shooshani tried to suppress Hilton representatives from bringing potentially important information to public comment. Commissioner Shooshani, Vice Chair Lori Green Gordon and Commissioner Howard Fisher are signatories to the No on HH ballot rebuttals.

Shooshani interrupted the speakers, limited time and finally, shouted to Ted Kahan, President of Oasis West Reality LLC, in the back of the room, challenging the Hilton Initiative for “circumventing” the City’s process by going to the voters. In 2008, the Hilton went through 19 public meetings and an election to pass the approved project. However, the merits of the initiative process have no bearing on the importance of transparency and full attention to the minutest detail of the Wanda project, which has only gone through

two hearings. It is clear, following the second hearing, that the change of use for the Wanda project significantly alters the project’s environmental impact. This Supplemental EIR piggybacks on a residential project and purports to have “no major traffic impacts.” Traffic and circulation now call for limousines, ride shares, taxis and guest entry and exit solely by valet. A valet delay or traffic tie up, such as an accident or unloading a lot of luggage, could leave cars on the motor court queuing onto (see ‘WANDA SEIR’ page 23)

John Wooden Pyramid Of Success Launches At All K-5 Schools By Laura Coleman Being your best version is an aspiration that should never get lost in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. To that end, last week the Beverly Hills Unified School District launched the revolutionary John Wooden “Pyramid of Success” district-wide at all four middle schools. Both Beverly Vista and Hawthorne have used the pyramid for several years now, and both principals extol the virtues of the character-development tool created by legendary basketball coach Wooden nearly 70 years ago “For the kids, we’re always thinking about the blocks,” said Hawthorne Principal Michelle Dar. “It formalizes a process for us to really show the kids what goes into being a good person.” Using 15 “blocks” that represent traits such as respect, self-worth and loyalty, the pyramid becomes an ever-pre-

sent reminder that individuals have the capacity to control their character. At Hawthorne, for example, some teachers spend 10 minutes every Wednesday discussing one block, which they’ve dubbed “Wooden Wednesdays,” in an effort to engage students in develMichelle Dar & Steve Kessler oping their characdence” box. ter. After Hello Dolly and Mame, Broadway composer Jerry Herman wrote Dear World, based on Jean Giraudoux’s The Madwoman Of Chaillot. The 1969 musical didn’t meet the same blockbuster fate. But its relative failure hasn’t stopped musical-theater lovers from long cherishing its charming French-accented score. Now, they have a chance to hear it, in a concert version starring none other than Tyne Daly when the Valley Performing Arts Center (VPAC) launches its musical theatre series with a one-night-only performance at 8 p.m., Friday, Sept. 30 at Cal State Northridge, 18111 Nordhoff St. “Producer Suzi Dietz and I had been talking with the Valley Performing Arts Center and simultaneously, Suzi’s friend Tyne Daly had been talking about doing Dear World,” says Director David Lee. “So it all came together serendipitously. And we’re not ones to take coincidence lightly.” The improbable plot follows Countesses Aurelia (Daly), Constance and Gabrielle, who

Tyne Daly

scheme to stop businessmen from drilling for oil under their Parisian neighborhood. Lee, terming the work an “eco fable,” relishes its relevance for today. “It’s about little people with a mission standing up to greedy, power-hungry corporate war lords, and ecological damage. The problem is not limited to post-war France” (when Giraudoux wrote the piece as social commentary). Like Daly, who’s said, “I think it’s one of Jerry’s most wonderful scores;” Lee was drawn to the music. The score includes And I Was Beautiful, Each Tomorrow Morning, the Jacques Brel-esque I Never Said I Love You and I Don’t Want To Know. There’s

also the title number, that could be the anthem for the ecology movement, and a Herman march, One Person. Daly will lead a cast of 13 performers, accompanied by a live 25-piece orchestra and a student chorus. Positioned at music stands the cast, including Steven Webber as The Sewerman and Vicki Lewis and Beth Malone as the other countesses—in a delightful Tea Party scene—will read and sing their parts, accompanied by Jane Levees as scene setter and narrator. She’ll open the proceedings with a line from the play that good triumphs over evil—and letting the audience know that this fantasy ”is a step removed from reality.” “I’ve done this format several times before,” says Lee. “The audience uses its imagination and many times what you picture in your mind as far as scenery and costumes is far more ambitious that what a designer could do.” For tickets and information, visit ValleyPerformingArtsCenter.org or call 818-677-3000 —Steve Simmons

OAKHURST–The Beverly Hills Planning Commission voted Monday to continue the 332-336 Oakhurst project to Oct. 13/ The project is a proposed 31-story condominium, partially located in Los Angeles, with seven of the units contained in Beverly Hills, leaving the other 24 units inside Los Angeles city limits. The proposal is for those units to be five stories high, and the Planning Commission asked the developer to reduce it to four stories at 49 feet high. The project is the subject of a CEQA lawsuit that is coming to court Oct. 14. That lawsuit contends that Los Angeles failed to properly analyze parking, traffic, height density, mass, increased intensity of use and the historic value of the buildings (above). The broken red line above shows the impact of the potential 5-story building on the neighborhood, which was designated as a potential historic district by both Los Angeles and Beverly Hills. The Los Angeles survey information, however, was suppressed internally. The CEQA lawsuit will prevent demolition until it is resolved. If the Planning Commission votes to approve the project on Oct. 13, the CEQA lawsuit will be subject to an appeal.

Median Price Of Los Angeles County Homes Rise By Six Percent In August The median price of a home in Los Angeles County rose by 6 percent in August, compared with the same month a year ago, while the number of homes sold jumped by 5.4 percent, a real estate information service announced today. According to CoreLogic, the median price of a Los Angeles County home was $530,000 last month, up from $500,000 in August 2015. A total of 7,725 homes were sold in the county, up from 7,331 during the same month the previous year. In Orange County, the median price was $649,000 last month, up 6.4 percent from $610,000 in August 2015. The number of homes sold jumped by 14.5 percent, from 3,174 in August 2015 to 3,633 last month. A total of 23,278 new and resale houses and condos changed hands in Los Angeles, Riverside, San Diego, Ventura, San Bernardino and Orange counties last month, according to CoreLogic. That was up 8

percent from 21,557 in July and up 9.5 percent from 21,263 in August 2015. The median price of a Southern California home was $465,000 in August, the same as July but up 6.2 percent from $438,000 in August 2015. "Last month's Southern California home sales came in strong -- the highest for an August in a decade," said Andrew LePage, a research analyst for CoreLogic. "Job growth, low interest rates, household formation and other factors helped drive up activity. It's very likely that August 2016 sales also got a boost from timing. This July had five weekends and fewer business days than usual, probably resulting in a significant number of transactions being recorded in August rather than July. "The big picture is that the housing market continues to edge back toward normalcy in the wake of the worst housing bust in modern history," he said. –– City News Service

Beverly Hills High Football Team Falls To 0-4 After Loss To Cerritos By Matt Lopez The Beverly Hills High football team suffered another setback last Friday in a 41-6 nonleague loss against Cerritos at Nickoll Field. The Normans allowed a touchdown on Cerritos’ first possession of the game and trailed 28-0 at halftime. Trailing big in the third quarter, the Normans’ lone touchdown came on a two-yard scoring run by Michael Revah. The young, inexperienced Normans team fought hard under firstyear coach Steve Geanakos, but didn’t have the manpower to hang with a more experienced Cerritos squad. Cerritos tallied 261 yards and three touchdowns on the ground against the BHHS defense.

Tonight at 7 p.m., the Normans host Peninsula (3-0) at Nickoll Field. Girls volleyball Beverly Hills High’s girls volleyball team swept Hawthorne on Wednesday in its Ocean League opener, winning 25-6, 25-10, 25-6 in the Swim Gym. The Normans were dominant serving the ball, led by Savannah Perry’s 11 service aces. Perry also had 36 digs. Carina Massan led the Normans’ attack with 11 kills, while Katherine Wu had 36 assists. Beverly Hills moved to 4-4 overall and 1-0 in the Ocean League with the victory. That win broke a three-match losing streak for the Normans, who lost to West High 8-25, 16-25, 25-23, 9-25 on Sept. 15.

From Survivor To Advisor—Kluft To Co-Chair Alive & Running Suicide Prevention Walk/Run After resident Pamela Kluft’s sister Beth Joy Hess, died by suicide in 2012, Kluft found support in Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services’ Survivors After Suicide program. Attending bereavement support groups, semi-annual reunions and other activities for people who have lost loved ones to suicide, she discovered a way to transform her grief into action. “People are at such a loss, they don’t know where to turn, after they lose someone to suicide,” says Kluft. “I wanted to get the word out that there is a crisis hotline and services for people contemplating suicide— and for those who have survived the suicide of a family member, co-worker or friend.” Kluft knows first-hand the importance of being able to openly discuss the pain of struggling with depression. Reflecting on the loss of her sister, Kluft says, “If we had known what she was feeling, she might be alive today.” Kluft joined the Didi Hirsch board in 2015 to promote suicide prevention and support the

Beit T’Shuvah Services Are Partnership Between Clergy, Congregants

A

s a leading addiction and recovery center in Los Angeles, Beit T’Shuvah knows a thing or two about starting anew. Beyond its walls are the men and women who counsel, learn and grow from teachings in the Torah, making them relevant and real in today’s world. As the High Holidays approach it’s those same men and women that invite everyone, from all walks of life and backgrounds, to rejoice in its unique and innovative congregation and community. “At Congregation Beit T’Shuvah services are a partnership and collaboration between clergy and congregants. We don’t conduct services to you, rather we pray and learn with you,” says Beit T’Shuvah Senior Rabbi Mark Borovitz. Beit T’Shuvah services aren’t the average buttoned-up, formal experience. One will find a sea of families, singles, millennials, boomers, Gen Xers all in one place to sing, dance, learn and pray—celebrating another year, another chance, a new commitment to improvement once again. Known for its contemporar y approach and rock ‘n’ roll spirit, Congregation Beit T’Shuvah’s music alone draws a crowd. “Services at Beit T’Shuvah are so unique and interactive it gives members an opportunity to participate in a way that humanizes the service,” says a regular Beit T’Shuvah congregant, Jerry Sands-Saklad. “The music is a reflection of the congregation; it makes the entire service relatable and comfortable, it doesn’t float too much above our heads.” “Music is a universal language,” adds Rabbi Borovitz. “We have made music an integral part of our center’s method for recovery, so it only makes sense to integrate it into our services,

A high holiday service at Beit T’Shuvah. especially for the High Holidays; it bypasses one’s negativity or uncertainty and goes directly to our souls.” Many spiritual ceremonies can feel rote or obligatory. Beit T’Shuvah, however, has successfully shifted its congregants’ perception from being an “I have to go” to “I want to go” event. Another member, Cathy Galper says, “I love the overall feeling I get during High Holiday services. I used to be the person who was constantly looking at my watch and wanting to leave. Now, I’m at every service, participating from beginning to end, and the time flies as my soul soars.” So, go. Explore. Say “hello” to the smiling soon-to-be familiar faces of men and women, sing and dance side by side, and for a moment, power off, stop looking at your watch, take a breath …your new year can begin today and you can start over. Only this time, with a whole community behind you. For more information, call 310-2045200, ext. 213 or visit www.beittshu-

Beverly Hilton’s Owner Beny Alagem To Donate $100,000 To Local Schools By Laura Coleman For years, the Beverly Hilton has been a big supporter of Beverly Hills schools, and it’s a tradition that is poised to continue. This week, The Beverly Hilton’s owner Beny Alagem confirmed that he planned to present the Beverly Hills Foundation (BHEF) with a check for $100,000 later this month. According to BHEF President Monique Gibbons, the money will be equally divided among the five schools to be used for technology needs. “We are proud of our decade long partnership with BHEF and our schools and share their mission that strong schools make our City and community better,” he said.

director and manager of K-12 education for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). “I am adamantly in favor of their adoption,” stated Seidel, who also participated n the development of the standards as a representative of JPL. “NGSS is a watershed moment for K-12 science education in the United States.” Seidel underscored how vastly evolved scientific understanding has become since he was a teacher and certainly since he was a student–and that understanding will continue to grow in the coming years. “Specific content knowledge becomes increasingly less valuable as time goes on,” he explained. “NGSS...anticipates content that science has yet to reveal.” What is essential, Seidel continued, is teaching students to think critically–something he contends NGSS does effectively. Both Board President Howard Goldstein and mem-

“The fact that this donation is focused on improving technology in schools is particularly close to my heart, as I began my career in technology and understand what a positive impact it can make in the lives of kids.” Gibbons said she approached Alagem earlier this year about continuing the Hilton’s support of Beverly Hills schools. After several conversations, Alagem decided that helping the schools improve their technology offerings would be the most valuable. “The Hilton has been great with us over the years; very generous to the schools individually and via BHEF,” Gibbons said. “Doing this will help our schools.” ber Noah Margo support staff in moving forward in determining how to best adopt the new framework. The other three members, however, expressed reservations with the new standards. Board VP Mel Spitz even went so far as to inaccurately allege that one staff member had violated board policy by working toward implementing the NGSS curriculum in BHUSD schools without having first gone to the board for approval. Chief Academic Officer Jennifer Tedford said the district was on track to implement the new standards as long as the board supports it. Said Margo: “The success of any school rests squarely on how well educators do their jobs. I think it was clear by the end of the study session that our real issues have always been and will continue to be parity in the classrooms. Every one of our students, regardless of academic prowess deserves the best. Standards don't deliver the best education, teachers do.”

directly or indirectly, in federal, state and local elections. According to 11 CFR 110.20(i): A foreign national shall not direct, dictate, control, or directly or indirectly participate in the decisionmaking process of any person, such as a corporation, labor organization, political committee, or political organization with regard to such person’s Ffederal or non-federal election-related activities, such as decisions concerning the making of contributions, donations, expenditures, or disbursements in connection with elections for any federal, state, or local office or decisions concerning the administration of a political committee. Currently, three of the Planning commissioners tasked with reviewing Wanda’s Supplemental Environmental Impact Report are signatories for the Committee on the ballot, indicating interference with the impartial examination of the Wanda SEIR. That interference was demonstrated Monday evening when Planning Chairman Joe Shooshani cut off commentary from the project’s closest and most impacted neighbor, the Hilton, saying that they should not comment because they had “circumvented” the process. The Hilton has undergone 19 public hearings on the project. One Beverly Hills has had two, and Shooshani balked at giving it more than one more hearing. Beverly Hills Mayor John Mirisch met with Wang in a secret meeting on a recent diplomatic trip to China. Wang Jianlin is the 18th wealthiest man in the world, and the wealthiest in China. Wang has stated that he intends this project to be Wanda’s entrée into Hollywood. In addition, Wang Jianlin has been linked through investigations in New York and in Chicago to similar evidence of influence peddling with similar projects there. Last year, the New York Times found that Wang is close to members of the Chinese Communist Party Leadership and that some of their relatives and business associates had a significant stake in Wanda. Wanda owns AMC Theaters, and Wang announced that he plans to

Magellan is an Illinois-based company that developed Lakeshore East in partnership with The Wanda Group. According to the Magellan website, all of their projects are in Chicago. Committee political consultant Adam Englander gave the following statement: “Although we have not been sent a copy of the complaints or been contacted by any agencies, we are confident that all allegations are baseless, as our campaign reports clearly show that this is a campaign fully funded and controlled by American interests with no foreign control or money in any way, shape or form.” Englander did not disclose that the application to register a foreign LLC filed with the California Secretary of State August 27, 2014 was signed by “Benxi Ding, President of Wanda Los Angeles Properties Co., Ltd. the Sole Member.” It was signed with his Chinese character signature. Hilton owner Beny Alagem expressed surprise when notiSenior Corporate VP of Estee Lauder Companies and founder of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation used a pink ribbon as its symbol. Today, many organizations proudly bear pink during the month of October to show support. All funds raised by the BHPOA will be donated to the Breast Cancer Program, part of the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute at Cedars-Sinai. The facility is recognized as a leader in cancer research, treat-

BEVERLY HILLS fied of the complaint, and said he had no knowledge of the filing. "We care about hotel development in Beverly Hills and throughout Los Angeles County tremendously,” said Rachel Torres, Research Analyst for Unite Here Local 11. “We believe that every part of the process should be transparent, as it affects our members directly. This is beyond one hotel fighting another hotel. This speaks to the functioning of our democracy at the federal, state, and local level." Torres said the Beverly Hilton is one of four union hotels in the City, and that its members support the Hilton. She said she is confident they will prove that financing for this campaign is from foreign sources. The committee has not filed any campaign finance reports, which are due Sept. 29. Committee filings identifying Lakeshore East for “Major Funding” under California Law, which means that they have contributed a minimum of $50,000. The complaint contends that, based on their research, “it appears that the initial contribution by Lakeshore East to the Committee is a foreign contribution. Lakeshore East has no other ties to the ballot measure effort in Beverly Hills other than its connection to The Wanda Group in the Chicago Development Project. Thus, there is simply no plausible way this contribution could have been made without the participation of The Wanda Group, a foreign corporation.” In addition to the three Planning Commissioners who are signatories to the Ballot Initiative, three City Councilmembers, led by Mayor John Mirisch, have also joined the opposition to the Hilton Initiative; the opposition argument is written by the Mayor. It is still baffling as to why Wanda has gone to such great lengths to defeat the Hilton project. But clearly, by triangulating public attention, they have successfully diverted attention to the Hilton Initiative throughout the public SEIR process for their own project. The Hilton has never “counter-attacked” One Beverly Hills, but by creating a false narrative, Wanda has actually created an “us-againstthem” battle being carried out in the pages of the Wall Street Journal.

Therefore, during the month of October, all uniformed personnel will be able to proudly wear the Beverly Hills Pink Patch as a reminder of these officers' dedication and commitment to the project. The patches will be available for purchase at City events and online at www.bhpoa.org for $10 each. For more information, call the Beverly Hills Police Officers' Association at 310-550-4551.

There can be no argument; the Coachella Valley is a vast treasure trove of artistic talent. It is because of this vast amount that some welldeserving local institutions do not get their full measure of recognition. So it is with the Coachella Valley Symphony and its companion, the Buddy Rogers Youth Symphony. Founded about 24 years ago by Jeannette Banoczi, the Coachella symphony had the goal of perpetuating live symphony music and to provide public performance venues for both accomplished youth and adult musicians; to provide symphonic music education to young emerging musicians; and to support diversity among individuals and within music presentations–all this while serving the community with professional, affordable concerts for audience members. In addition, the Coachella Valley Symphony supports the Buddy Rogers Youth Symphony, which offers free instruction as well as mentorship and scholarships, all the while providing a full orchestra experience for the Valley’s youth. There are currently some 50 students, ages 8-18, in the program. From its inception, nearly 850 young musicians have passed through the Buddy Rogers Youth Symphony with several going on to perform with The Coachella Symphony, while others have enrolled in music schools, and conservatories. The 16/17 season begins the evening of Dec. 11 at Rancho Mirage High School’s Galen Auditorium, and will feature Shelly Yoelin, the Rancho Mirage High School Chamber Singers and the Buddy Rodgers Youth Symphony. The 50-piece Coachella Valley Symphony is composed of Desert residents, guest musicians, out-ofstate-snowbirds, and also some musicians from the surrounding Southern California areas. It performs an extensive variety of classical and popular music. Tickets for the performances range from $25 to $65 and are available at 760-360-2222.

Cantor Estherleon Schwartz To Begin High Holiday Services With Mindfulness Meditation By Laura Coleman For this Jewish New Year, Cantor Estherleon Schwartz is trying something novel. At the start of all high holy days services, this year Schwartz will lead the Beth Shirah Congregation in mindfulness music meditation for 30 minutes before she begins the service. “It’s a sacred good way to prepare oneself to take in all the possibilities and all that is good in an upcoming prayer

service of togetherness, harmony and peace in peaceful way,” she explained. “The services are a time for reflection and redemption.” Schwartz, who is a child Holocaust survivor, said she has spent her life trying to be of service. Beginning the service with meditation, she said, will allow people to have a deeper openness in connecting with the teaching of the Torah portion. “It is always my wish to

bring people to a place of stillness; just to be in stillness and just to be,” she said. Services are: Rosh Hashana Eve at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 2; Rosh Hashana Morning at 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 3; Yom Kippur Eve at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 11; and Yom Kippur Morning at 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 12. All services will be held at The Matrix Theatre at 7657 Melrose Ave. For information, email estherleon.com.

me and insinuate that I have questionable moral character for doing my job as a spokesperson. Let me read you the exact words so you all know, that I am not exaggerating. ‘As if Marie Garvey is not herself ‘out only for personal and economic gain’ and as if she wouldn’t say the Hilton skyscraper is an abomination if you paid her enough. (And as if there aren’t a few choice English words for what that makes her…).’ Well, I think every woman knows what the Mayor is calling me in his blog. I stand here for every woman who has ever had the misfortune to be called a whore for doing her job better than someone wanted them to. Every woman knows exactly what he meant. I thought a great deal

about whether I should come tonight or not. I was struggling because I tell my daughter – don’t respond to a Bully because it only makes them feel big when actually they are very small. But, as a woman and as a mother of a daughter, I cannot let this go unaddressed. I cannot let the Mayor insinuate that about me. I will not let the Mayor try to define me. He doesn’t know anything about me or how I live my life and he doesn’t have that right. Beverly Hills is a City that has a sign outside that says we promote and embrace civility and yet your Mayor is not following those very guidelines and you should know that. Moving forward, it is my hope that the Mayor will be held to a higher standard by each of you that cause him to focus on the merits of the proj-

ect and not attack the dignity of others who disagree with him. Thank you for listening.” Following her comments, Vice Mayor Nancy Krasne immediately apologized. “Please know in the City where we embrace civility, that is not appropriate at any time, by anyone, under any circumstance. So thank you for coming forward.” Mirisch abruptly cut off Krasne, curtly thanking Garvey and directing her to sit down. Then he said that it was “his turn” and he said it was, “the pot calling the kettle black.” Garvey could “dish it out, but she couldnt take it in.” Garvey has never publicly verbally attacked Mirisch. When Krasne attempted to comment again, he cut her off. “Next,” he said, calling up the next speaker to the podium. “Treating each other with

respect, compassion and an open heart is one of the reasons why I love our community so much and what makes us all feel a sense of home and closeness. It breaks my heart to see anyone be treated with anything less than that. We are better than that and need to strive for this for ourselves and each other,” said Councilmember Lili Bosse. Asked to comment, Councilmember Kathy Reims did not respond. Councilmember Julian Gold also would not comment. With a majority of City councilmembers, the City Council can censure the mayor through a resolution or motion, but their actions would have no power. The lack of response from Reims may indicate she would not support it.

sponsored three lawsuits in this election against the Hilton Initiative. Only representatives who oppose Measure HH (handpicked by developers of the One Beverly Hills Wanda project) agreed to participate. The Courier has verified that the opposition was selected and approved by the Wanda Group. An email sent to the Courier office from Wanda political consultant Harvey Englander at 3:16 p.m. Sept. 20 stated the following: “We have

1:45 left to make a decision about the 3rd debater or we will have Susan Mischler. All ideas are welcome.” The email went to Rohan à Beckett (Wanda), Jay Newman (Athens), Adam Englander (Englander, Knabe & Allen), Matthew Driscoll (Athens) and, apparently mistakenly, Courier Publisher Marcia Hobbs. The Wanda Group has spent millions of dollars in lawsuits, advertising, campaign headquarters, mailers and political strategists – just to defeat the Hilton Initiative. The

City’s mayor and councilmembers Julian Gold and Kathy Reims have publicly vested themselves in opposition, with Mirisch agreeing to be seated as part of the opposition team. Representatives for the Hilton underscored that the forum was likely to be unfair, given that a respected California judge had already ruled against the mayor and his two council supporters for being biased and misleading. Hilton spokesman Ted Kahan said there were four conditions that must be met in

order for the Hilton to forum. The conditions are: first, no City official who has taken a public position on the initiative can participate; second, no representative from the Wanda, the Athens group or any of their respective consultants can participate; third, graphics should be limited to a simple site plan and the text of the initiative, including the underlining Specific Plan; and fourth, the Hilton must be able to approve all speakers on behalf of the opposition to Measure HH before agreeing to participate.

Griffin Way competing with cut through traffic. Andy Licht, the newest commissioner who comes from the Traffic and Parking Commission, clearly has the most experience with traffic and circulation. Peak event conditions appear to have been misrepresented by the Wanda, reporting that the Hilton’s peak nights have 1,000 guests. The Hilton reported more than 2,000. Other questions include the number of delivery trucks and trash trucks the hotel requires and how many employees will need to be parked. The Hilton’s studies, they said, result in larger numbers than those being presented by the Wanda. The studies produced for the 2008 project, said Kahan, were produced during the

recession when occupancy was lower. The Planning Commission is tasked with examining the cumulative traffic impact of scores of projects within the target area, examining real conditions and making some very careful recommendations before this project reaches the City Council. Shooshani abruptly cut off public comment from Wanda’s closest neighbors on a project that will have a permanent impact on the future of the City from those most likely to have the greatest interest in promoting the best project, the best traffic solutions and the least construction impact. The Hilton shares Merv Griffin Way, Santa Monica Boulevard and Wilshire Boulevard. Shooshani’s challenges silenced the Hilton until Hilton

attorney George Mihlsten addressed the commission. Given three minutes to speak, Mihlsten told commissioners the Hilton had information compiled from the results of their own consultants’ testing and verification with projections that take into account future development impacts. The team, present during the 2008 negotiations, also wish to clear up some historic misunderstandings such as a legend touted by Athens’ Jay Newman that the Hilton negotiated a 2008 agreement for the Wanda loading dock to be placed on Merv Griffin Way. Commissioners Alan Block, Howard Fisher and Andy Licht responded by asking the Hilton to submit their information in writing and to attend the next public hearing on the SEIR. They each

expressed a desire to know the information the Hilton wished to present. Vice Chair Lori Green Gordon demanded that the Hilton submit their construction plans for planning commission review. The Hilton readily agreed. “I support the Hilton having an opportunity to express their view and make their presentation. If the hearing had continued I would have asked them questions about their findings,” said Block. “If the Hilton has information that will assist us in making a decision, we should hear it.” The Planning Commission will meet again on Sept. 26 and add this to the project list. It is expected that there will be at least one more meeting on the SEIR.

MIRISCH BLOG (Continued from page 1)

I am here tonight, to speak to Vice Mayor Krasne and Council Members Bosse, Reims and Gold. On Friday, I was the subject of the Mayor’s latest blog. It is clear to everyone that the Mayor does not support Measure HH and that is his right and how he can appropriately express that opinion is to vote no. What is inappropriate is the Mayor using his blog under the title of Mayor of Beverly Hills to personally attack anyone just because they happen to disagree with his stance on Measure HH. To date, I believe the count of personal attacks by the Mayor is up to around 11 individuals. And, speaking personally, it is NOT appropriate to attack

opposed to the initiative had responded to a call to meet at City Hall to iron out their differences. The deadline for each side to have submitted three speakers was initially set for Tuesday, Sept. 20. That deadline was subsequently extended until today when the Hilton withdrew from the forum after it became clear that speakers for the opposition were being selected by representatives of the Wanda Group, which has

Santa Monica Boulevard. There has been no adequate explanation why the traffic for this project is not routed entirely to the westside of the 9900 property, avoiding conflicts with access to the Beverly Hilton. The supplemental plan calls for three times the excavation, 50 trucks an hour, 11,000 trucks over a 2-3-year period. The impact will be significant and goes beyond hauling only at night. Developers insist that the western elevation should not be disturbed with hotel guests and deliveries. Yet they are willing to force the public to endure three left turns on Santa Monica Boulevard and trucks and garbage trucks on Merv

BEVERLY HILLS

Chairman 2014 Paula Kent Meehan President & Publisher Marcia Wilson Hobbs

A LETTER FROM EDITOR LAURA COLEMAN When I became the target of Mayor John Mirisch’s Huffington Post blog last April in which he identified me by name 21 times as a vehicle to attack The Beverly Hilton, I was despondent. As a journalist since 1999, I have always believed that the ethics of journalism rank among the highest in society–and here he was, the mayor of Beverly Hills, accusing me of bias. His blog post against me was riddled with accusations and absurd allegations, which made it easier to stomach that he was absolutely wrong. But as I read and re-read the post, I was struck by the cruelty of his diatribe. I felt sick in the aftermath of its publishing. I cried. I talked to my family and friends. I ruminated about an appropriate solution. From friends in the community I learned first, that I had support, and second, it was not the first time that John had cruelly attacked someone using his words. In fact, compared to previous attacks, his rant against me was positively mild. Still, because it had happened to me, I determined I needed to go on record to exculpate myself. One night I sat down with an old friend of mine, an Austrian expat who’d once worked for that country’s version of Time magazine concurrent with my employment for an Economist magazine in Vienna. Together, we drafted a thoughtful rebuttal. Every single allegation could be shown to be wrong. I was told by an editor at the Huffington Post to send my rebuttal. My own publisher had told me I was welcome to publish a rebuttal wherever I saw fit, including the Courier. I decided to move on from the incident. I honestly just wanted the whole experience to disappear, and the last thing I wanted to do was provoke John further. Last Friday, when I read his latest personal attack via his blog, this time against Hilton spokesperson Marie Garvey, I was once again struck by the inherent cruelty of what he was writing. On Monday I spoke with Marie–she had yet to read the blog post, she said, but her brother had called to inform her that the mayor essentially called her a whore. The raw emotion in her voice as she shared that resonated deeply.

On Tuesday morning I gave John Mirisch a call and we had a 40-minute on-record conversation. I asked him what word he intended to use to describe Marie when he wrote that there was a “word” to describe her behavior. “I let everyone figure out what word they want,” he responded. When I in turn proffered the word “whore,” he responded “That’s your word, not mine.” (For the record, I would never use that term to refer to Marie.) He elaborated that he was actually playing with the English language, intentionally being mysterious, availing himself to “the nuances of writing.” He fancied himself “aligned with journalists,” he added. But beyond those semantics, the obvious truth was that he was intentionally being cruel. Why? I asked him. He didn’t see it that way–he was responding to a bully, he explained. By that logic, I had bylined an article he disagreed with and thus I was a bully; Marie was paid to do publicity for the Hilton and thus she was a bully. About two weeks after John published his blog attacking me, he sent me an email letting me know that he had heard that his blog had hurt my feelings. He was sorry about that, he wrote. Further, he said, he was certain we could continue to work together professionally. In fact, for the previous four years, John and I had an excellent relationship—nothing in his behavior had hinted that he might one day take after me. A few weeks after his apology, I emailed him a Hilton-related question. He responded via email that he hoped I was being well compensated by the Hilton for asking him such a question. (Note: I have not received a dime from the Hilton and have never been approached to ask John anything.) I responded that he was out of line. His response to that was a long-winded diatribe as to why I was the one who was actually out of line—thankfully, he did not elect to publish his libelous remarks that time. I can only hope that the next time John feels that he is responding to a supposed bully, he chooses to make his remarks from a place of love, rather than one of cruelty.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Beverly Hills residents don’t always get to make decisions about development in our City. Measure HH is allowing the residents of Beverly Hills to choose which plan will move forward on The Beverly Hilton property. Measure HH offers a much more streamlined alternative to the two-building plan that will otherwise be built. It’s a simple choice- “yes” on HH creates one building and a large park, and “no” on HH creates two buildings and no park. I choose one building and a park over two buildings. Bonny Benyamin ****** Sad and disgraceful that one has to fight City Hall, even here in Beverly Hills, to get at the truth about a mayor who is anything but a model civil servant. Or a civil one! Even more sad and disgraceful are the latest misdeeds about Mayor John Mirisch being disclosed as wife abuse, intimidation, and police involvement. He is trying to appear innocent and trying to block an ugly truth that he himself created,... A forced disclosure like this would be enough to stop Trump in his tracks. What will be the result vis-a-vis John Mirisch? I feel totally uncomfortable with the thought of such a man--yes, such a woman-abusing man-representing us as mayor. What comes next? Complacency that allows such a man to remain and flourish? Or can we-and it takes more than one or two people, dear fellow residents--jointly move to have him dismissed, impeached, replaced, recalled, etc.? Henry Elton Collins

Thank for keeping us citizens informed of what our City’s government doesn’t want us to know. It is clearer than ever that Mayor John Mirisch’s office is being used as an avenue to personal wealth and empowerment. More than once, this mayor has behaved in an unethical and obfuscatory manner, trying to hide what is going on in his business dealings, using his public office as a shield. Now with revelation of his domestic abuse, he has crossed the line in his attempted cover-up with the help of who at City Hall? Were this same sort of revelation unearthed about Donald Trump, for instance, it would virtually kill his campaign. Mirisch and City Hall have decided to release the records and pay the lawyer fees in this matter in order to curtail publicity and keep the knowledge of what kind of mayor we have from reaching a wider public. But is this where it ends? Is this who we this whom we want as our mayor? So I raise the question: how do we go about impeaching Mayor Mirisch? Surely in a democracy, we are not stuck with him regardless how badly he behaves in his professional, public and private lives? Dan Classen ****** We half expect profiteering from politicians including John “Mr. Wanda” Mirisch. We do not expect covered-up facts–uncovered despite the mayor’s blockage about spousal abuse. The question is–do we tolerate that? I say it is unacceptable. Joe Ferris

Astrology By Holiday Mathis TODAY’S BIRTHDAY (Sept. 23). It’s a year of high ambition, and, remarkably, you’ll match your aims. Whoever stimulates that dreamy side of your personality is a true godsend. You’ll appreciate, give to and help the ones who support you, and in return you’ll all be lifted high. January brings hot discussion and fast travel. Aquarius and Gemini adore you. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Needing to be the best can help you break records and push back limitations. It can also create the kind of tunnel vision that disables you to see the bigger picture. Be extra mindful of the space and feelings of those around you. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). It’s not always easy to let go of the baggage. The current nugget of emotional dead weight you’re trying to drop might require more work. Celebrate your small steps. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Brainstorm. You’ll have a good sense, when all is said and done, what the best ideas really were. Allowing yourself that space to explore, well, that’s crucial. The elements will fall in place and you’ll do very well. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). There's nothing quite so poignant as outgrowing your mentor, parent or teacher. This is what you’re facing now -- the bittersweet goodbye to your wide-eyed point of view. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). You’re trying to go back, yet there is no “back.” Your opinions are changing. What happened then will be colored by what you now know—a lot more and better. PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar. 20). If a partner is looking for reasons your relationship won't work out, this is a sign that it won’t—though not for the reasons they reach for. You're better than this. You’ll be blessed when heavy baggage leaves your life. ARIES (Mar. 21-Apr. 19). How have your choices, for better or worse, landed you here? It’s the question you keep asking yourself. To make your next move you have to understand your last one. TAURUS (Apr. 20-May 20). You haven’t a clue what’s coming, and the surprise of that makes life interesting. A fantastic new circle of friends will celebrate your ideas and support your plans. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). In the same way that flowers can’t recognize their own beauty and grizzly bears don’t think of themselves as ferocious, you have this talent that’s so close to you that you can’t even see it. CANCER (June 22-July 22). How will you control the wild energy? Never doubt that there's a way to tame and direct it to create huge beauty in the world. A Sagittarius or Aquarius will be your ally in this endeavor. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). It’s more than a cliche: Everyone is busy. It’s almost gotten to the point of being a contest—not a contest you’d want to win, though. Clear some space. Somehow, when you are less busy, you’ll get more accomplished. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Someone is pressuring you to move before you are ready. Don’t buy into that person’s time frame; you have your own. That someone has a different sense of pacing doesn’t make your pace wrong.
