Obama Travels Roil Beverly Hills Traffic . . . Again By Marcia Hobbs President Barack Obama visited Los Angeles and for the third time his motorcade managed to snarl traffic and inconvenience thousands. On Monday evening, his helicopter landed at the Veteran’s Administration fields behind the Barrington post office. He then rode by motorcade all the way to the House of Blues in West Hollywood–the entire route was on Sunset Boulevard which is always jammed at that time with regular working people trying to get home. Of course, Sunset was closed nearly an hour earlier, including streets crossing Sunset, which created a lock down zone so the President could star at two political fundraisers. The following morning his travels closed Sunset and all the cross-streets from Beverly Hills to Barrington again for an hour so he could have breakfast and leave The Beverly

Margo Joins School Board Race As Write-In Candidate By Krystal Leach de Amante Longtime resident and former teacher Noah Margo announced last Friday his write-in candidacy for the BHUSD Board of Education election. “I actually had been toying with the idea of running for quite sometime–when the slate was full with five candidates,” he admitted. “But I just didn’t feel there was a need for another candidate.” However, that need changed (see ‘MARGO,’ page 15)

up close and as personal as you can from an armored limousine traveling fast, a perk the rest of us would aspire to almost any day at 5 and 9 p.m. His route also took him up Rodeo Drive, our well known shopping street–oh, I forgot, he was here for fundraisers not to stimulate the economy. He did whiz by the great Halloween decorations at 605 Rodeo Dr., Stanley Black’s sculptures, and, of course, UCLA, which has a helipad and would have shortened our agony. The Secret Service does yeoman’s work, but it apparently does not include open cooperation with local police agencies, I have been told. We will undoubtedly have many more such visits to scoop up dollars for the presidential campaign, but common courtesy would tell the President’s staff that they too should stay off the road at prime traffic time when fundraising.
Council Hires Firm For ‘Peer Review’ Of Subway Project By Courier Staff Still refusing to work with the Beverly Hills Unified School District to protect Beverly Hills High School, the City Council Tuesday approved a $75,000 agreement to hire Exponent, Inc. to “peer review” the Metropolitan Transit Authority’s Westside Subway Extension Environmental Impact Statement/Report after it is released later this year. A “peer review” simply looks at the work performed, the report written and advises
whether or not it was done competently. A “peer review” is not an independent study of the underlying data. This continues the troubling approach promoted by the council majority of Mayor Barry Brucker, Vice Mayor Willie Brien and apparent “rubber stamp” Julian Gold, M.D. This expenditure would duplicate professional expertise already retained by the school board. By Krystal Leach de Amante The Beverly Hills City Council voted to adopt a new ordinance Tuesday permanently banning future oil drilling at the Beverly Hills High School campus beginning 2017. The new ordinance comes
after lengthy discussions over what has morphed into a controversial, heated topic between concerned residents, school board officials and the City Council. (see ‘OIL,’ page 14)
Superintendent Shares Plan By Marla Schevker Beverly Hills Unified School District Superintendent Gary Woods unveiled his “action plan” Tuesday. Although this plan does not have a timeline for completion, nor is it as specific as Woods said he would like; the action plan presents three specific goals with objectives and ac-
tivities as to how they can be completed. The descriptions of practice, or categories the goals fall under, are aligned with state and national standards including the California Professional Standards for Educational Leaders and the California Department of Educa(see ‘ACTION,’ page 14)

BHHS’ Beverly Cafe Set To Open Oct. 12 The new BHUSD food services company, Chartwells, will hold the grand opening of the Beverly Café from 4-6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 12 after originally being scheduled Sept. 27. The Chartwells program began at the start of the BHUSD school year, Sept. 6. A presentation, given to the Board of Education at the Sept. 13 meeting, reported long lines and an overall success of the food program. “We are working out all the kinks,” Chartwells Management Liaison LaTanya Kirk said at the meeting. “(But) I am glad to report the kids loved the food.”
Kirk said since the beginning of the school year, the Chartwells program has seen about 450 students a day. All of the board members said they heard good things about the program. “The one complaint I’ve heard, and it’s a good thing for us, is the lines don’t move fast enough,” Board Vice President Brian Goldberg said. “If these numbers continue to hold true we’ll be good into the school year.” RSVP for the opening up to Oct. 5 to email Tom Soika at tom.soika@compass-usa.com.

Board To Explore Rebuilding Of Two School Auditoriums By Marla Schevker The Board of Education decided Tuesday to explore plans to tear down both Horace Mann and Hawthorne’s auditoriums and rebuild using Measure E funds. This reaction came after presentations by Chief Facilities Official Nelson Cayabyab on additional updates that need to be made to both auditoriums as a result of projects not being closed out through the Department of State Architects (DSA).
There are currently about 41 projects still open with the DSA from Measure K. Cayabyab told the board it could potentially be cheaper to tear down the buildings entirely than try to modernize them. He also noted the buildings have asbestos and accessibility issues and lead problems. The board will discuss the options for rebuilding the Horace Mann and Hawthorne Auditoriums at an Oct. 25 study session.

College Knowledge: Plan, Don’t Panic! Sayeh Mohammadi Special to The Courier Less than a month into the school year, seniors begin their panic-stricken journey of applying to college; the sudden load of the unfamiliar responsibilities such as writing college essays and filling out financial aid forms, may begin to wear them down. To help with the process, BHHS counselors have created a month-long program, “College Knowledge,” to provide information on colleges and their admission deadlines. Throughout this month, counselors have arranged college visits, providing students the opportunity to meet with admissions counselors and inquire about details like a school’s test scores, GPA and tuition.
• On Oct. 5, Tim Brunold, USC dean of admissions, will host a “Kick off to College Night.” • On Oct. 12, sessions will be held for UC, CSU and private school campuses for the “Kick off to the College Application.” • On Oct. 19, College Admissions Testing Night for juniors will be hosted by Compass Testing Prep. All events will be held at 7 p.m. in the K.L Peters Auditorium. Enrichment periods with the counselors for a Q&A about the college application process are now available to all interested BHHS students. For more information, visit the BHHS website and click on the “Counselor’s Corner” link, or stop by any counselor’s office for a calendar.

District Sets Aside Funds To Aide Middle School Outdoor Education Program By Marla Schevker The Board of Education voted 5-0 to put $50,000 aside to help fund middle school outdoor education programs throughout the BHUSD, Tuesday. The money has been set aside for schools that need help paying deposits for upcoming educational trips including the 8th grade Yosemite trip. A settlement last year, with the ACLU and districts in San Diego and Orange County created guidelines for acceptable fees for public schools. The outcome stated a district cannot deny a child an educational experience (on campus or off) for financial reasons. If it is a part of the curriculum every student must be included.
Horace Mann Principal Steve Kessler said after the settlement was reached, parents stopped paying for their children to go on the trips, leaving the costs to the PTA and the district. He went from three parents asking him for assistance to 14 within a few weeks time. Although a public education is free, Board Vice President Brian Goldberg said, a great education costs money. “We can provide the bare minimum for our children, but if we want to provide a robust outdoor education program, parents need to help us,” Goldberg said. “If the community says they’re not interested in doing it then maybe we won’t be able to offer these programs in the future.”

50/50–A Sheer Film Delight I wouldn’t walk a mile for a camel, but I would for any movie starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Anna Kendrick. Gordon-Levitt has, once again proven, that he is among the brightest and talented stars in Hollywood. As for Kendrick, she is a pixie to behold and once again amply displays magical screen karma. Both are excellent in 50/50 authored by Will Reiser. Gordon-Levitt stars as 27 year-old Adam Lerner whose life goes through an immediate metamorphosis when told he has a rare form of cancer. Adam tells his live-in girlfriend, Rachael—(and I don’t care FILM what movie credits her director dad Ron has, Bryce Dallas Howard is his greatest production)–of his condition and she is extremely supportive. They go to his parents’ house for dinner where Adam reveals his current state of health to his mother Diane (a perfectly cast Anjelica Huston). Immediately, she gets up to make him green tea, which she claims wards off cancer. He patiently exclaims that it’s a bit too late for that. When Adam starts to feel the terrible effects of chemotherapy, Rachael slowly begins to bail out and is seen passionately kissing her old boyfriend, Adam’s best friend, Kyle (the over-bearing and faithful Seth Rogen). Kyle, in the only way he knows how, rats on Rachael when she is together with Adam. The scene is squeamishly delicious. Kyle induces Adam to go partying and look for girls telling him that being honest about his cancer is a come on to women. In the process, it’s Kyle who benefits. Adam, who seeks comfort and understanding, visits Katherine (Kendrick) a fledgling and openly honest therapist. If you possess an ounce of passion, you will hope for the two of them to click and for Adam to beat his cancer. I won’t divulge the ending but this dark and often laugh out loud comedy, is just what Dr. Cutler recommends. 3 and 1/2 bagels out of 4

patients are undiagnosed and untreated because of a lack of awareness by physicians. The Jeffrey Modell Foundation is in its seventh year of a joint awareness and education campaign with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “Complications of Primary Immunodeficiencies are typically caused by infections that may be life threatening or debilitating,” said Dr. Joseph Church, CHLA division head of clinical immunology and allergy. “Thanks to this gift from the Jeffrey Modell Foundation, we can expand services and education outreach so we can better identify and care for children who are stricken with these potentially devastating illnesses.” The CHLA Jeffrey Modell Diagnostic and Research Program for Primary Immunodeficiencies will work to provide affected children and adolescents with leading-edge diagnosis and treatment options. Providing care for PIs is complex and requires a special set of expertise—all of which are offered at CHLA. Hospital doctors in clinical immunology and allergy, bone marrow transplant and research immunology, and pathology and laboratory medicine have extensive experience in PIs and work as a team to care for patients. All members of the care team, including nutritionists and social workers, are available onsite at the hospital.

Councilman John Mirisch, the only member to vote against the ordinance, expressed concern regarding the significant loss of school district revenue. The councilman adamantly proposed delaying the vote and providing the school board a 45-day grace period to present additional input before solidifying a resolution on the issue. “We are going to be committed to making sure that the kids don’t suffer as a result of losing the revenue,” he said. “If the City imposes upon the school [board] that they are not able to extend this contract, they are not able to get this revenue, we have a moral respon-
sibility to make them whole again.” Mirisch suggested working as a team to devise a responsible fiscal plan to recoup the $1 million revenue loss with slant drilling, ground leases or eliminating wasteful spending at the city hall level. His motion to include an amendment ensuring council’s assistance with the plan was voted down. Vice Mayor William Brien stated that Tuesday’s council meeting was not about the school district’s financial support, but rather dealing with the ordinance of drilling on or near the school campus. “The amount of monies going to the schools are in excess of $11 million a year,” he remarked. “We have always sup-
ported the school district and this is not about supporting or not supporting (them). And to their credit, they’ve actually been able to increase their own reserves to about 10 percent now.” BHUSD Board of Education Member Steven Fenton informed The Courier he was unhappy the Board of Education was did not have the opportunity to properly weigh on the issue before council’s vote. “John Mirisch was right --the decision was made without vetting on the part of the council,” he said. “We were hoping to meet with [Councilwoman Lili Bosse] and [Councilman Julian Gold] over the last few days but we were told by the secretary that their earliest availability was Oct. 31.” Fenton was overly dismayed with the council’s choice to, “do this without consulting with the school board and the thousands of homeowners that would be affected by this decision.” Although the liaison committee was established in early August, the committee, consisting of Bosse, Gold, Fenton and Boardmember Jake Manaster will meet for the first time on Oct. 31.

tion. According to the action plan, Wood’s goals are to: •Advocate, nurture, and sustain a district/site culture and instructional program conducive to student learning and staff professional growth. •Ensure management of the organization, operations, and resources for a safe, efficient, and effective learning environment. •Understand, respond to, and influence the larger political, social, economic, legal, and cultural context represented in the Beverly Hills’ community. Each of the goals has three objective and multiple activities that need to be accomplished to meet the objective and goal. Woods said he would have a tally sheet to keep track of the goals as a way to hold himself accountable for all of his goals. The BHUSD superintendent and the board will discuss the goals and objectives on a yearly basis at a minimum. The action plan comes just 90 days into Wood’s employment in the BHUSD. He said he talked to over 100 different small groups and individuals involved with the BHUSD. The action plan was developed based each individual or groups answer to three questions: “1. What do I need to know about the BHUSD? 2. What do I need to know in order to be successful in the BHUSD? 3. If you were superintendent, what would be the first action you would take to improve the district?” Woods said the Core Practice of the BHUSD is defined as “Teaching and learning aimed at the achievement of high standards by students.” All of the goals and objectives keep that idea in mind. The action plan, goals and activities are available to view at www.bhusd.org.

Brucker has stated multiple times that the City Council will not join the school board in defending the high school. Brucker, Tuesday morning, told in a meeting of the district's parent/teacher organization he will not fight the MTA but really just hopes to get some money from them to remediate any problems the district may later encounter, contradicting many of his earlier statements. The selection of Exponent was championed by David Gustavson, director of Public Works and Transportation. “The resumes for the individuals who work for this firm are incredibly impressive,” said David Gustavson. “Almost every member of the team has a Ph.D. from some distinguished institution; CalTech, UCLA, UC Berkeley or Stanford.” Gustavson stated that Exponent appeared to be one of the few local engineering firms not already contracted to work for Metro. Gustavson failed to mention that the Beverly Hills School Board has already retained many of the leading experts in the field as well. Reform Councilmember John Mirisch challenged Gustavson on Exponents' expertise in subway tunneling and construction. Gold expressed concern that the firm continue its work to completion. Gustavson refused to answer the question directly, stat-
ing only that the firm had broad expertise in engineering and seismic work. The current agreement amount for the contract is $75,000. However, Gustavson informed the council that due to the scope of the project and potential results of the EIR findings, there could likely to be a request for additional funding in the future should there arise a need, due to increased workload. The council set aside $350,000 in early July to put towards its fight against MTA, incase diplomatic meetings with public officials were not successful. According to Gustavson, the current engagement includes: •conducting an engineering and scientific review of subway tunneling and station construction near seismic fault zones, • potential construction and operation of a subway under the existing high school, and the building and • planning of future construction and operation of new buildings. No deadline was given for the work and to date, Metro has refused to release any data. Through the consent calendar, the City Council extended the terms of their agreement with geotechnical engineering company Shannon & Wilson. The council authorized a purchase order of $65,000. The total contract amount is $100,000. Shannon & Wilson will also review the Westside Subway Ex-

City Attorney Larry Wiener stated that there is a provision in the contract that prevents the firm from obtaining any work from Metro, while fulfilling their contractual obligations to the City. Metro has already “black listed” other engineers for working with the Beverly Hills school board to oppose the tunnel under Beverly High. Remaining unanswered is the question of why the Beverly Hills City Council majority refuses to take serious action to oppose the tunnel under Beverly High de- ROTARY WELCOMES FEUER—Assemblyman Mike Feuer spoke to the spite its own individual con- Rotary Club of Beverly Hills on Monday. when former candidate, Andy Licht, announced his untimely decision to dropout, leaving a gaping whole for a fair, balanced race with at least four running candidates. After some contemplation, Margo reconsidered his initial impression and decided to file the necessary paperwork to participate as a write-in candidate. Margo’s list of qualifications indicate that he may have what it takes to not only win the race,
but to do exceedingly well as school board member. The Beverly Vista PTA CoPresident not only has numerous years of first-hand experience in the school system as parent and teacher, but as an independent business owner, he has the latitude in his personal schedule to commit himself wholeheartedly to the position. ”First and foremost, my many years in the classroom give me an (edge),” Margo admitted. “In the past, the board
has typically been comprised of business and law professionals.” In addition, Margo believes that his entrepreneurial background in property asset management and construction also equips him with a unique skill set to strategically tackle the current Measure E funds issue, while keeping in mind the true needs of the school district. “My main drive for running is to bring the current Beverly Hills school system back to excellence,” he concluded.

ear in October develop into life-changing decisions and relationships. Sagittarius and Virgo people adore you.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Love isn’t going to sneak into your heart and surprise you. You won’t suddenly discover love. Love is a state you co-create with another person. An interesting development happens in a relationship. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). This day feels like a whole week because its intensity is so turned up. Pack twice as many people and activities into the 24 hours, so the day will be broken up into short bursts of your attention. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Life will likely improve later, and yet it would be a shame to waste the moment anticipating better days when you could be engaged in the perfectly lovely circumstance happening right now. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). It will help you understand your rights and powers. For instance, without the support of customers, a business will fail. As a paying customer, you have certain rights you should know and defend. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Each person projects his or her own story onto the situation at hand. Therefore, you can safely assume that however people are reacting to you, it is not personal. PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar. 20). You sometimes assume what you know is common knowledge, but it really isn’t. That is why it's important you teach the people around you, especially if those people happen to be your children. ARIES (Mar. 21-Apr. 19). Winning begets winning. Regardless of your starting position, you can create an excellent end result if you stay focused on what’s going right instead of on what’s going wrong. TAURUS (Apr. 20-May 20). You don’t push yourself to share with others, because your contributions flow effortlessly. It brings you such great pleasure to give that you are becoming well known for your generosity. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Don’t forget about that whim you had last week. It is still a good idea, and it is worth investigating further, if not following through to the exciting end. CANCER (June 22-July 22). You will do your part to protect, preserve, restore and manage your household. If everyone takes on as much responsibility as you do, your home life will be in tiptop shape. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). You'll enjoy your time with loved ones. You’ve been rushing around so much that you may feel that you haven’t really seen them. Today's slower pace will give you a chance to openly gaze in appreciation. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Tidbits come in the form of information and entertainment and won't cost much money to pick up and share. You are constantly combing the scene for something your loved ones would like.

BRUCKER TO SURRENDER BEVERLY HIGH This week was very revealing about the true intentions of Mayor Barry Brucker for the future of Beverly Hills. Please note The Courier had been a staunch supporter of him throughout his first term as mayor and hailed his return to the chairmanship of the City Council. That makes the truth all the more galling to us. Brucker has now adopted the governing style he was elected to oppose in the first place – the “council majority” decides in secret, abuses the minority councilmembers, and springs things on people without warning. Not one member of previous councils remains who was part of that group. Brucker came to the council from two terms on the BHUSD Board of Education. He won his first term via a groundbreaking write-in candidacy. He was clearly the “people’s choice” with his promises of open government. When Brucker was first elected to the council as truly a “reform councilmember,” he was frozen out by other councilmembers. According to him he was refused copies of council memoranda and staff reports, and in general boycotted. He came to The Courier with this and we made that treatment public. We believed that kind of action in our City government was reprehensible. Our first amendment duty as a newspaper is to expose that kind of abuse and we did. The uproar ended the abuse of Brucker on the council. When his turn as mayor arrived, he was a true consensus builder and treated his fellow councilmembers with respect and dignity. Above all else, he strongly supported the BHUSD Board of Education, populated as it was with his political allies such as Myra Lurie, Myra Demeter, Alyssa Roston and John Millan. Regardless, he supported strong funding of the City’s Joint Powers Agreement with the district and ensured the BHPD provided adequate protection for schools and children. He never wavered. He and this newspaper disagreed strongly about The Beverly Hilton Revitalization Project and later twohour free parking. The voters sided with us, but we remained staunch supporters of him. Who is this Mayor Barry Brucker today? On nearly every issue, Brucker blindsides every one of his colleagues except Vice Mayor Willie Brien. He includes Dr. Julian Gold only when it comes time for a third vote. Most of the time, Councilmembers John Mirisch and Lili Bosse are left in the cold. On major issues such as Roxbury Park, removal of the oil wells on the Beverly High campus, and the MTA tunnel under Beverly High he acts in secret, clearly against the wishes of the people of Beverly Hills. When The Courier reported matters he did not like, such as his refusal to support the BHUSD and his insistence on trying to find ways to circumvent City ordinances and procedures on the environmental impact report for Roxbury, he took every step he could to to damage The Courier. He promoted the silly “Los Angeles Times Taste” of “Burgers ‘n Beer in Beverly Hills,” supported that event bringing in the Target discount chain to the City as a sponsor (that’s certainly the image of Beverly Hills. No?). Then he cut a deal with the local AOL website to become the City’s mouthpiece (as though the City’s own www.beverlyhills.org was not enough), and pushed through the secret “Rudy Cole” TV program to pander to get some favorable press. Now he is backtracking full speed to prepare us all to surrender Beverly High. He just told The Courier on the record he is more concerned about losing one or both subway stations in Beverly Hills than protecting Beverly High. That statement is beyond disturbing – it is frightening. It also displays a complete ignorance of the economics and policy supporting the subway. The Beverly Hills stations are vital to the ridership estimates required to support the subway in the first place. Bypass Beverly Hills and there is no subway. If the City had actually retained anyone with real expertise, as the school board did months ago, he would know this. The school board has relied on experts – scientists, engineers, lawyers who specialize in this kind of matter – and has not tried to take the lead in technical discussions. They let the experts do the talking. Brucker and Brien have tried to do it all themselves. They are not qualified nor equipped to do this, yet they persist. We do not understand this. In contrast to the school board, Brucker refuses to retain experts to prepare to fight MTA. He just told The Courier on the record that he will not join with the school board and may not sue to stop the tunnel if MTA experts say the high school can survive a tunnel. Of course they’re going to say that. Why else would they work for the MTA? The council’s retention this week of an engineering firm involves only reviewing MTA’s data, not researching nor examining matters on their own. The council insists on “doing it on the cheap” as though you can put a price tag on Beverly High or dozens of our residences. He is willing to do that. That is just plain wrong for any Beverly Hills City Council member to do, much less our mayor. Fortunately for all of us, our school board will not surrender. It is prepared to fight and is fighting. They cannot “do it on the cheap” and will not. The contrast is stark. Brucker should be shoulder-to-shoulder with them and yet he refuses. Instead he hurls verbal insults and brickbats at them trying at every stage to undermine and weaken them. What we hope is not the case may in fact be the case: is he trying to punish our school district in retaliation for voters defeating his allies on the school board and electing, instead, Steven Fenton, Brian Goldberg and Lisa Korbatov? The Courier endorsed Fenton, but did not endorse Goldberg or Korbatov. These three have done a remarkable job correcting the problems left them by the Brucker allies. Is this what is behind all of this? If it is that petty, we would be stunned. But look at what is going on and try to figure out a reason. We are having a real tough time. He is not defending our City. He is not defending our schools. He is not being straight with any of us. We are going to invite him to sit with us and ask him to answer these questions directly – not a scripted, city-paid cable TV show like he sprung on Mirisch and Bosse, but a real conversation. We hope he will accept.
Rabbi Jacob Pressman A GOOD AND SWEET NEW YEAR Today, Rosh Hashanah, is the second day of the Jewish year 5712. It is a time set aside for introspection and atonement, properly referred to as Days of Awe. For the observant Jew, aided by the support of being at High Holy Day services in the midst of his coreligionists, it is a time for honest self-analysis, recognizing our short-comings and vowing to correct them in the new year. We pray for ourselves, individually, and for humanity, collectively. I find the best expression of what a new year means in the prayer of Rabbi Amnon of Mayence in 11th Century Germany. The local archbishop tried to persuade him to renounce his faith, and when he did not, had his arms and legs cut off. Bleeding, he was brought in to the local synagogue’s Rosh Hashanah seRvices and there he intoned: “On Rosh Hashanah it is inscribed and on Yom Kippur it is sealed: how many shall pass away and how many shall be born; who shall live and who shall die…”and went on to list all the possibilities of the New Year. His alternatives are what we all face as we enter a new period of time, and with awe we look to the unknown future and pray –not for ourselves alone, but for the human race. May I wish for you and me and all humanity: long life, good health, true peace and prosperity.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR The City Council made one of the most significant votes in its history on Tuesday. By prohibiting any extensions of the Venoco Oil drilling lease at the BHHS school site after expiration in 2016, the decision of four council members (Bosse/Brien/Brucker and Gold) sent a clear message that children’s health comes before royalty dollars and set the stage to finally remove the oil extraction plant adjacent to the school 's ball field. At their joint meeting in August 2011, all elected members of the City Council and Board of Education agreed that an oil production facility was an incompatible land use for Beverly Hills High School. In fact, the State Fire Code prohibits any new oil drilling within 300 feet of any school campus. Yet, two School Board members (Fenton and Korbatov) have suggested they would still consider extending the drilling lease
beyond 2016 unless the City reimburses the schools for future lost royalty revenue. Steven Fenton went so for to suggest that the vote was simply “emotional”. As a parent, protecting the health and safety of all children at the high school is an emotional issue. And as your mayor and on behalf of our City Council, ensuring the health, safety and welfare of our students and staff at Beverly High is responsible governance. Barry Brucker, Mayor ***** Is anyone else troubled by the fact Mayor Barry Brucker is injecting himself once again into our local school board race? Two years ago, he ran the election campaign for Nooshin Meshkaty and she lost. Since that defeat Brucker has been unwilling to work with the new board on MTA and threatened to cut the amount the schools receive from the Joint Powers Agreement.
Now the mayor is introducing and endorsing another candidate for school board who is also endorsed by Meshkaty and Myra Lurie all while he sits on the School Liaison Committee and the negotiating team for the next JPA. We can ill afford for Brucker’s personal feelings of animosity towards Dr. Brian Goldberg to cloud his judgement and allow the JPA and MTA issues to go unresolved to score political points at the expense of our students and residents. Mayor Brucker show some leadership and character and stay out of the school board elections and instead focus on your job. You have enough work to do on City issues. Mr. Brucker if you feel you have something to contribute to our schools resign from the City Council and run for a seat on the board of education. Josh Rubenstein
