Christiansen’s Latest Verdict Nears Day In Court Of Appeal By Laura Coleman In a 101-page response brief filed Friday, attorneys for Karen Christiansen, the former Beverly Hills Unified School District Chief Facilities Officer, argued that she and her company were not subject to the reach of Government Code Section 1090, like other district employees, because she was being paid as a consultant. As such, the brief argues, last year’s verdict against her, which now has her owed in excess of $22 million, should stand. BHUSD attorney Fred Fenster said he will file a reply brief next
month in anticipation of a final judgment by the Court of Appeal that could overturn last year’s jury verdict that she was improperly terminated and therefore a victim. A different jury–from Christiansen’s first trial–found her behavior to be criminal. Fenster maintains that because Christiansen was acting as though she were a true school district employee, she is therefore subject to 1090’s reach. “Karen Christiansen and her company Strategic Concepts LLC...violated the conflict of
“Could you please kindly forward me Mayor [John] Mirisch’s contact information at his hotel while in Beijing,” wrote Wanda Group Director of Sales & Marketing Rohan a’Beckett in late July in an e-mail obtained by the Courier to City of Beverly Hills employees Dorina Mohan and Adrianne Tarragon. “We need to arrange transportation to collect him from his hotel.” In the email, a’Beckett was finalizing plans for Mirisch’s China meeting with Wanda Chairman Wang Jianlin, which was not disclosed publicly until Mirisch made mention of it to Variety, noting that he’d “love for Wanda to consider Beverly Hills to be their Hollywood headquarters.” This is the same Wanda Group that announced Thursday it had fired a top executive in China for bribery of a local government official. Why didn’t Mayor Mirisch disclose his meeting with Wang when the information was requested in advance of his departure to China? And who paid for the China trip? For the full e-mails, see page 18.

Virginia Robinson Gardens Annual Soiree Lights Up Beverly Hills By Laura Coleman On Saturday night, the glamour of a bygone era returns to Beverly Hills as the City’s first estate, Virginia Robinson Gardens, plays host to its annual Patron Gala. Held every year beneath twinkling lights on the great lawn at the center of the 6.5acre property, this year to the theme “La Dolce Vita,” the gala is both a celebration of the historic landmark as well as a fundraiser to support an important institution that serves over 2,100 students every year. This year’s gala honors local philanthropist Joni Smith. Smith's far-reaching philanthropic efforts have included organizations like the Music Center's Blue Ribbon, the Costume Council of LACMA, and the Library Foundation, among many others. Women’s Guild Cedars-Sinai To Be Honored For Innovation In Saving Lives By Laura Coleman Saving a life often comes down to knowing just what to do at the right time. To that end, the Women’s Guild Cedars-Sinai is doing everything in its power to ensure that professionals in the medical field–from surgeons to administrators–have the opportunity to hone valuable skills at its eponymous Simulation Center. Since opening its doors almost three years ago at Cedars-Sinai Hospital, the Women’s Guild Simulation Center has helped some 20,000 people annually interact with the newest tools and technology at the only medical training facility in Southern California that employs completely equipped and functional operating rooms, Intensive Care Unit rooms and a trauma treatment area. In recognition of the center’s outstanding contribution to healthcare, the Los Angeles County Medical Association (which represents more than 6,500 physicians), announced that in concert with the Patient Care Foundation of Los Angeles County, it will honor the Women’s Guild with its Innovation Award for Technology at its upcoming Los Angeles Healthcare Awards Dinner in November. “Every single person in the commu-

Furth said the Women’s Guild, which is comprised of approximately 65 members, voted to direct its funds to create a center focused on continuing education in order to allow medical professionals to practice new techniques in order to reduce human error. Recently, the Courier had the opportunity to observe Cedars-Sinai surgeons-in-training learn how to perform a lifesaving procedure by operating on high-tech “cut suit” worn by Simulation Specialist David Escobar. For this procedure, where nine scrub-clad individuals surrounded the cut suit-clad Escobar to perform a thoracotomy (a lifesaving maneuver to open the chest cavity in emergencies), heart surgeon Alistar Phillips, co-director of the Congenital Heart Program in the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute, demonstrated just how to make a surgical airway cut into the neck while his training team assisted. “How realistic this is allows them to hone their skills,” he said. “Everything we do here at the Women’s Guild Simulation Center is to not suspend reality...so that people can learn.”

side note about the folk dancing. During the

Los Angeles Business Journal Names Joyce Rey One Of The “Most Influential”
Wanda Group Fires Executive Who Bribed Local Government Official
By Victoria Talbot Beverly Hills real estate personality Joyce Rey, leader of Coldwell Banker Previews International, has been named one of the most influential people in Los Angeles. The honor was bestowed on Rey by the Los Angeles Business Journal, listing her in its inaugural issue of “The Los Angeles 500: The Most Influential People in Los Angeles.” Rey is no stranger to accolades. In the four decades Rey has been in Los Angeles, she has a $3 billion sales record. Not bad. This year, The Hollywood Reporter named her in the “Top Hollywood Realtors for 2016.” Joyce Rey was also nominated for the Will Rogers Award for Lifetime Achievement this year. “I was almost speechless when I was notified that I was being named one of the most influential people in Los Angeles, because everything I’ve done in this community is out of love for Los Angeles. I am both honored and grateful to be recognized for this award and all the others,” said Rey. “Integrity, attention to detail and innovation have been the key factors in my success.” Rey is also a tremendous philanthropist in Los Angeles. “I have a passion for making our world a better place
Chinese entertainment giant Wanda said Thursday it had fired an executive implicated in the bribery of a local government official. The announcement followed media reports that the executive had been named in court documents related to a government corruption trial. Wanda said in a statement that former manager Leng Chuanjin had "seriously violated" company rules by using corporate funds to pay a local party chief 300,000 yuan ($45,000) as it sought to shake off partial government ownership and move into private hands. The company first learned about the bribery case from media reports that Jin Cheng, former party chief of Wanda's home district, had been sentenced to jail on corruption charges, it said. According to the Benxi Intermediate People's Court's judgement, two Wanda executives used company funds to pay Jin the sum in two instalments. The bribes were to "thank" Jin for helping Wanda transition from a stateowned company into a privately-held firm, the court said. stunning transformation from a regional real-estate firm into a giant conglomerate that has bought major Hollywood studios and aims to challenge Disney. From 2004 to 2007 Jin presided over discussions on Wanda’s restructuring, the court documents said. During that time, the municipal government offloaded 70 million shares, allowing Wanda to go private. On Thursday Wanda said it had fired Leng from his post as chief engineer, frozen his shares and dividends, and ordered an audit of his financial ties to the company. It did not specify when the sacking occurred. Wanda also said the company's then-vice-president of finance Han Yuqiu, who assisted in the bribe, had misappropriated funds without approval. The company has frozen his shares, it said, but added that he was already retired and therefore could not be sacked. "The group reiterates that all staff members take this as a warning to abide by company rules and regulations," it said. –– Agence France Presse
USC’s Richard Green Sees Uneven Real Estate Recovery Up Ahead By Victoria Talbot Richard Green, director of the USC Lusk Center for Real Estate and a regular advisor to the White House, Senate Finance Committee and Internal Monetary Fund, sees an uneven recovery in the real estate market. “We are getting close to the 2006 peak for national house prices, and the most important positive resulting from this is more and more people have equity in their houses again. While it’s certainly positive that more people own homes worth more than their mortgage balances, the recovery in house prices has been uneven and prices remain well below their peaks in many parts of the United States. In fact, when adjusted for inflation, house
prices are still nearly 20-percent lower than they were in 2006. “It’s also important to note that, unlike the last time around, higher prices reflect higher rents and reflect an increasing affordability problem.” Green recently returned to USC after a one-year appointment as senior advisor for housing finance with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. A joint research center of USC’s Marshall School of Business and the School of Policy, Planning, and Development, one of the Lusk Center’s primary missions is to address timely issues that affect the urban economy, real estate and public policy.

Los Angeles Conservancy Hosts Glamour In The Hills On Oct. 22 At Beverly Hills Historic Mansion By Victoria Talbot The Los Angeles Conservancy announces its annual gala event Glamour in the Hills: An evening at the Historic Liliore Green-Rains Estate in Beverly Hills Oct. 23. Together with Max Whittier, Charles Canfield, Frank Buck, Henry Huntington, William Kerckhoff, William Herrin, W.S. Porter and Frank Balch, Liliore’s father Burton Green purchased Rancho Rodeo de las Aguas to drill for oil. Finding water, the partners formed the Rodeo Land and Water Company and developed the town of Beverly Hills. The home was built by Burton Green, one of the original developers of Beverly Hills, who built this 1940 mansion for his daughter. Designed and built by James F. Dickason, it blends styles and influences including Georgian Revival, French Revival, and Rustic. Liliore Green-Rains suffered mysterious illness that left
to her, including Pomona College, Stanford University, Loyola Marymount University, Caltech, the Hospital of the Good Samaritan in Los Angeles and the Menninger Foundation in Topeka, Kan. She lived in the home until her death in 1986, when it was purchased by Merv Griffin for a reported $5 million. There are eight bedrooms and ten bathrooms, with a lavish entry and staircase presiding over inlaid marble floors. Paneled walls, huge living and dining rooms, and a vast front lawn, tennis court, swimming pool and separate pool house are complimented by a rose garden and dense one-acre urban forest of Canary pine trees hiding an original Adirondack cabin with amazing City views. Skaist-Levy purchased the home in 2005 for $17.5 million from former Ticketmaster Chief Executive, Fred Rosen. Currently owned by fashion designer and Juicy Couture

Modest Southland Housing Market Increase Expected For 2017 Following a dip in home sales in 2016, California's housing market will post only a nominal increase in 2017 amid supply shortages and affordability constraints, the California Association of Realtors said today in its 2017 California Housing Market Forecast. The forecast sees a modest increase in existing home sales of 1.4-percent next year to reach 413,000 units, up slightly from the projected 2016 sales figure of 407,300 homes sold. Sales in 2016 also will be
virtually flat at 407,300 existing single-family home sales, compared with the 408,800 pace of homes sold in 2015, a statement said. “Next year, California's housing market will be driven by tight housing supplies and the lowest housing affordability in six years,” said CAR President Pat “Ziggy” Zicarelli. “The market will experience regional differences, with more affordable areas, such as the Inland Empire and Central Valley, outperforming the urban coastal centers, where
high home prices and a limited availability of homes on the market will hamper sales. “As a result, the Southern California and Central Valley regions will see moderate sales increases, while the San Francisco Bay Area will experience a decline as home buyers migrate to peripheral cities with more affordable options.” The average for 30-year fixed mortgage interest rates will rise only slightly to 4.0 percent in 2017, up from 3.6 percent in 2016, but will still remain at historically low lev-
els, CAR said. The California median home price is forecast to increase 4.3-percent to $525,600 in 2017, following a projected 6.2-percent increase in 2016 to $503,900, representing the slowest rate of price appreciation in six years, according to CAR. “With the California economy continuing to outperform the nation, the demand for housing will remain robust even with supply and affordability constraints still very much in evidence. The net
result will be California's housing market posting a modest increase in 2017,” said CAR. VP/Chief Economist Leslie Appleton-Young. “The underlying fundamentals continue to support overall home sales growth, but headwinds, such as global economic uncertainty and deteriorating housing affordability, will temper stronger sales activity.” –– City News Service

Beverly Hills Psychologist Anita Storm Combines Passions For New Art Exhibit Beverly Hills psychologist Anita Storm is fusing two of her passions— art and gun-control safety. An art lover all her life, she is one of the curators of “Guns,” an exhibit running through Tuesday, Nov. 1 at The Loft at Liz’s, 453 S. La Brea Ave. “I was devastated after the shootings at Sandy Hook,” says Storm, in practice in the City, mostly on Bedford Drive, for 30 years. “Those were kids and it hit home; and then there were the shootings in Orlando. “I thought, ‘this is all about guns and gun violence“ says Storm. “And I thought ‘what can I do to get the message out.’” A former painter, art student, “mini-collector and New Yorker who spent her childhood visiting 57th Street galleries, Storm knew “art is powerful and its own language.” So she decided to mount an art show with guns as the theme; and after three years of work it’s come to fruition. Her first move in assembling the show was calling her friend artist Ed Ruscha. He was enthusiastic and with his commitment she called more artists. “Nobody said ‘no,’” reports Storm. “Everyone said, ‘this is great.’ Shepard Fairey had expecially strong feelings about it,” Storm relates. With the green light from gallerist
and co-curator Liz Gordon of The Loft at Liz’s, the show is on with artists John Baldessari, Jodi Bonassi, David Buckingham, Helen Chung, Joyce Dallal, Cheryl Dullabaun, Fairey, Dr. Anita Storm Michael Flechtner, Jane Goren, Mark Steven Greenfield, Alex Kritselis, Meg Madison, Ted Meyer, Sabine Pearlman, Osceola Refetoff, Miles Regis, Milo Reice, Kathy Shorr, Anna Stump, Senon Williams and Kerri Sabine-Wolf. Most of them created pieces especially for the show, says Storm, which has paintings, sculpture and even a work in neon by Flechtner. “There’s some fantastic work here,” Storm reports. An especially moving part of the show will be works by children who survived the Sandy Hook shooting and parents of children who survived—and some who didn’t—who worked with art therapists. “To me these have special meaning,” says Storm. “This is work from the heart.” (see ‘EXHIBIT’ page 19)

Oktoberfest The Musical Wows And Delights At The Crest In Westwood By Jerry Cutler If you are currently in the doldrums, then, perhaps an entertaining evening with seven highly talented people singing and dancing will brighten up your day. Oktoberfest The Musical; An Almost True Story, currently at the Crest Theatre in Westwood is a blast. The situations and jokes are funny and the cast–marvelous. If it’s mangled history you want – it’s there. If it’s hysterical while being historical you want, you will revel in the cleverness of the songs accompanied with pratfalls and grimaces from the performers. There is even audience participation if you fancy yourself a budding star. As I had mentioned there are seven performers in the ensemble and they are: Nick Bruno, Hannah Celeste, Sonia Gascon, Kersten Haile, Andrew James, Noah James and Natalie Masini. I cannot single one out, as they are all terrific and go to great lengths to entertain. The good thing about Oktoberfest is that it is an appropriate time of year when festivals and beer drinking are at their height. In fact, when entering, adults are given a glass of beer to rev up their anticipated enjoyment. It’s not great theatre, but it’s a heck of a lot better, livelier and funny than most musical productions appearing around the L.A. area. Incidentally, feel free to take the kids, as they will love it. There are a couple of double entendre lyrics floating around, but they probably will be too young to
Japanese Sumi Ink Paintings Christen Kylin Gallery An exhibit of sumi ink paintings and handmade sculpture by Yoshio Ikezaki has launched the new Kylin Gallery at 9411 S. Santa Monica Blvd. Ikezaki, who divides his time between L.A. and Kitakyushi in southern Japan is inspired by “pure nature without a trace of human involvement,” the Zen philosophy he learned from his grandfather and comparing East and West. “Westerners are interested in individuality. Asians respect selflessness. This opposition makes me interested in seeing and observing nature in a different way. It inspires my art.” His methods and process are specific and an art in themselves. For his paintings, Ikezaki uses sumi ink made from soot of burned vegetables and seed oil or pine tree ash. Most the paper he uses is made by professional traditional paper makers in Japan—”I direct them to make a special paper only for me.” He sometimes uses his own paper. Ikezaki studied tradit i o n a l Japanese papermaking
under master paperm a k e r , Shigemi Matsuo, in Yame, Japan for six years after having earned his MFA in painting from Florida Yoshio Ikezaki State University. He’s taught the craft at Southern California Institute of Architecture, UCLA Extension and the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. A unique trait of Ikezaki’s work is using traditional Japanese bamboo brushes, made especially for sumi ink painting and always on wet paper. “Water is a mother of everything,” says Ikezaki. “Wetting paper makes an extremely difficult surface to control, but at the
same time with my long-time experience with the medium, I can control the ink movement and create various kinds of skillfully controlled accidents leading to unique compositions capturing the forces of nature,” Ikezaki relates. “I wet the paper again and again after each layer of ink movement until I feel the composition is complete.” Ikezaki, a friend of galley owner Yvonne Zhu, is “overwhelmed” with his debut Beverly Hills show. “I was excited to see opening guests respond to my artwork so positively. I was pleased the gallery provided me such a beautiful space and an environment that fits perfectly with my artistic concept.” The gallery in open from 11 a.m.7 p.m., Tuesday, Friday and 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Saturday. understand them. However, they will, like me a big kid, be entertained and energized by what’s happening on stage. I must mention the creativity of Philip LaZebnik who wrote the book and co-wrote the clever lyrics with Harold Faltermeyer who also composed the music, and kudos to Madeleine Dahm for her non-stop direction and choreography. (Here’s a little trivia about Oktoberfest itself: The Einstein brothers were the first to provide electric lighting to the Oktoberfest. Albert Einstein himself once had a job as an electrician's assistant cabling the Schottenhammel Oktoberfest tent.).

CureCervicalCancer Heading To China The CureCervicalCancer (CCC) team will travel to China in November to participate in a women’s health conference. Led by resident and local oncologist Dr. Patricia Gordon, CCC will be making its second trip to China since 2015, when it initiated a program in Lianyungang. The team will be certifying health practitioners working in four different cities. Participants from CCC will be the new Leonard Hill Foundation Traveling Nurse, Rebecca Lespik, RN and program coordinators Julia Scott and Leila Hariri. Beverly-Hills based CCC is a leader in the effort to prevent cervical cancer in the developing world. More than half a million women worldwide acquire cervical cancer and more than 300,000 die from the disease each year. More than 85 percent of cases and 90 percent of fatalities occur in countries that lack proper screening and treatment programs, making this the second most fatal cancer among women in those regions. Since May 2015, the network of “See and Treat” cervical cancer clinics expanded from 32 to 67, currently serving seven countries. This growth has resulted in more than 55,000 woman screened/treated and been made possi-
ble by the support of philanthropist Judy Carmel, The Leonard Hill Foundation, The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, Joseph Drown Foundation and other individual donors. According to Dr. Gordon, “the “See and Treat” method is recognized by the World Health Organization as the gold standard for resource-poor areas. CCC targets countries where the mortality rate is highest. These areas more urgently require screening and prevention because treatment is least available. The early detection of precancerous cells enables effective and simple treatment to prevent cancer from developing. CCC’s international “Clinic in a Suitcase” model provides services at no cost to patients and is delivered at partner medical facilities. The operational model is to establish dedicated clinics, train local health workers and raise awareness so as to reach as many women as possible. Each clinic requires only$25,000 to set up. CCC is currently seeking professionals interested in joining the Global Sisters Circle committee. For more information. visit www.curecervical-cancer.org or call 310-601-5008.

Shimon Peres, Former Prime Minister Of Israel, Dead At 93 Israeli ex-president and Nobel Peace Prize winner Shimon Peres died on Tuesday two weeks after suffering a major stroke, his doctor said, triggering an outpouring of grief for the beloved elder statesman. The 93-year-old died in his sleep, according to his son-in-law Rafi Walden President Barack Obama immediately hailed Peres as a friend who "never gave up on the possibility of peace." "There are few people who we share this world with who change the course of human history, not just through their role in human events, but because they expand our moral imagination and force us to expect more of ourselves," Obama said in a statement. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed his "profound sadness" and opposition leader Isaac Herzog, the head of Labour, Peres's longtime party, said he will be "forever remembered as an icon of Israel's history." Peres held nearly every major office in the country, serving twice as prime minister and also as president from 2007 to 2014. He won the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize jointly with prime minister Yitzhak Rabin and Palestinian leader Yasser

Arafat for his role in negotiating the Oslo Accords, which envisioned an independent Palestinian state. Peres had been in hospital near Tel Aviv since September 13, when he was admitted feeling unwell and suffered the stroke with internal bleeding. He had been under sedation and respiratory support in intensive care. Born in Poland in 1923, Peres emigrated to what was then British-mandated Palestine when he was 11. Entertainment Business Manager Roy D. Kaufman Dies At Age 76 By John L. Seitz Entertainment business manager Roy D. Kaufman, a Beverly Hills resident for almost 40 years, died on Sept. 21 at age 76 following a long struggle with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. He was pre-deceased by his wife, Judi, who passed away one year ago to the day, following her well-chronicled 18-year battle against brain cancer, a journey that has served as an inspiration to thousands of people. Kaufman was born March 4, 1940 in New York City. He enrolled at NYU, studied accounting and landed his first position with Arthur Andersen in Manhattan. After coming to California in 1964, he joined the CPA firm of Pritkin, Finkel & Co. where he met Howard M. Bernstein. The pair formed Century City-based Kaufman + Bernstein, Inc. in 1970. In 1997, when Judi was diagnosed with her first malignant brain cancer
tumor, the pair created the Art of the Brain (www.artofthebrain.org), an organization that raises public awareness about brain cancer, spotlights the strength and courage of brain cancer patients, and helps raise money for advanced brain cancer research at UCLA. Roy Kaufman was active in the American Jewish Committee, serving on the L.A. chapter's executive board and as member of the National President's Council. He was also a founding member ofthe Skirball Cultural Center. Roy, who was pre-deceased by his brother Fred, is survived by daughters Jennifer and Suzy and grandsons Garrett and Sebastian. interest rules embodied in Government Code Section 1090 by using their considerable insider influence to dramatically overbill the District...and approval of a consulting contract that would yield her many millions of dollars,” Fenster wrote in a statement to the Courier. In 2012, Christiansen was convicted by a jury as a criminal for self-dealing for having entered into a solesourced contract with a company she founded, Strategic Concepts, LLC, through her role as BHUSD’s facilities chief. That conviction was subsequently overturned on appeal with that court ruling that Christiansen was not subject to Gov. Code Section 1090 because she was an independent contractor. Last year, L.A. Superior Court Judge Stephen Czuleger adopted the Appeal Court’s determination, subsequently ruling that BHUSD breached its 2008 contract with Christiansen’s firm. That ruling opened the door for that jury’s determination that she was a victim and was owed almost $20 million. Fenster said he was optimistic that
the Court of Appeal would confirm that the district properly terminated its contract with Christiansen and her company. “The trial court ruled that Section 1090 did not apply because the Christiansen parties were independent contractors who were not included within the definition of the statute,” Fenster stated. Subsequent Courts of Appeal, after Czuleger’s ruling, have found that contracts with independent contractors can be voided when they are tainted by a conflict of interest that enables these parties to profit from public contracts which they have had a hand in negotiating for their benefit, he added. In a case decided last year, for example, the Court of Appeal decided that the scope and intention of Government Code section 1090 authorized a private organization to enforce its provisions in the case of San Diegans For Open Government v. HAR Construction, Inc. “Personal gain at public expense will not be permitted and it is expected that the judgment will be overturned,” Fenster said.

Vin Scully Set To Call Final Game Sunday, Will Be Simulcast On Various Channels In Los Angeles Vin Scully's final broadcast will be simulcast in its entirety on Spectrum SportsNetLA, KTLA-TV Channel 5 and KLAC-AM (570), the Los Angeles Dodgers announced today. The first three innings of Scully's broadcasts are customarily simulcast, with the rest of his call heard only on television. "We wanted to make sure that all of Vin's fans are able to share in his final Dodger broadcast of an incredible 67-year Hall of Fame career,” said Lon Rosen, the Dodgers executive vice president & chief marketing officer. Scully's final game will be on Sunday, when the Dodgers play in San
Francisco. He said he chose that game because it comes 80 years to the day when he saw a sign at a laundry in his native New York City reporting the score of Game 2 of the World Series that day -- New York Yankees 18, New York Giants 4, that prompted him to become a baseball fan. "It seems like the plan was laid out for me, and all I had to do was follow the instructions," Scully said. The Giants have a tribute planned for Scully at AT&T Park Sunday. His call of the third inning will be simulcast on the Giants' television and radio outlets, CSN Bay Area and KNBR-AM (680). –– City News Service

Beverly Hills High Football Team Falls To 0-5 After Loss To Peninsula By Matt Lopez The Beverly Hills High football team was shut out last Friday in a 45-0 nonleague loss against Peninsula at Nickoll Field. Peninsula’s running game, led by junior Jeffrey Jimena, proved to be too much for a young Normans defense to handle. BHHS (0-5) struggled on offense – the Normans totaled just 31 rushing yards, led by Michael Revah who carried five times for 25 yards. Between quarterbacks Jeremiah Klapper and Thomas Goolsby, the Normans tallied only 24 total yards passing. Peninsula moved to 4-0 in a resur-
gent season under first-year coach David Young, who took over the program after Peninsula’s 2015 season was canceled mid-season because of too few players in the program. The Normans have never defeated Peninsula in 11 appearances since the school opened in Palos Verdes in 1991. Thus far through five games, Beverly Hills has tallied 383 rushing yards. The Normans have struggled to move the ball through the air, with just 136 passing yards and three touchdowns. The Normans are off this weekend and start Ocean League play on Oct. 7 with a game against Carson at 7 p.m. at Nickoll Field.
DEMOLISHED – The LA Sports Arena was demolished earlier this month, making way for the soon-to-be-built new Banc of California stadium that will house Major League Soccer expansion team Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC).
Police Investigating Knicks Star Derrick Rose Over Alleged Beverly Hills Rape The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed it is investigating sexual abuse allegations involving New York Knicks guard Derrick Rose, according to a court filing obtained today. In a letter lodged in Los Angeles federal court Sunday as part of a lawsuit against Rose, LAPD Detective Nadine Hernandez wrote that it was a "misconception" that the department "does not have a current criminal investigation" pending that names the basketball star and two other men. The letter is addressed to Brandon Anand, a lawyer representing plaintiff "Jane Doe," the woman who alleges Rose and his friends drugged and raped her in 2013 at a party in Beverly Hills. The defendants contend the sex was consensual. U.S. District Judge Michael Fitzgerald previously ruled that the woman's name will be revealed after a jury is sworn. A pretrial hearing is scheduled Thursday, when Anand is expected to ask the judge to reconsider the ruling
and keep the woman's identity secret for her own safety throughout the trial, which is set to begin Oct. 4. Hernandez wrote that the woman's identity would remain confidential, as far as the LAPD is concerned, as the police probe continues. "The ability to offer anonymity to victims of sex crimes is an invaluable investigative aid to investigators as well as a great comfort to victims of crimes of such a sensitive nature," Hernandez wrote. According to the suit, filed in August 2015, the plaintiff alleges Rose and his friends slipped a drug into her drink before sexually assaulting her. Speaking at Knicks media day today, Rose, 27, said he had not been aware of the LAPD investigation, and denied any wrongdoing. "I'm innocent. I felt like I didn't do anything wrong," he said. He also said he could miss time with the team during the trial of the civil case. –– City News Service

In an area such as the Coachella Valley, home to a high percentage of parents and grandparents, it comes as no surprise that the welfare of children is of primary concern. Tools For Tomorrow (TFT) is a not-for-profit that provides cognitive, emotional, social, multi-sensory and critical thinking skills by offering children a hands-on experience in art, music, creative writing and drama. TFT encourages a child’s artistic selfexpression and nurtures the positive selfesteem resulting from the discovery of his or hers inherent creativity. While creating their works of art, they acquire a coping mechanism for the future … a tool for tomorrow. TFT employs qualified paid instructors using a professionally designed curriculum, held on-site at individual schools after regular school hours; and, the classes, geared from grades K through 5, are free, with TFT picking up the $10,000 tab per each of the 15 schools currently offering the program. This means its class-budget, which also includes supplies, musical equipment and snacks, totals $150,000. Raising this money is the purpose of Visionaires of Tools For Tomorrow who are tasked with assisting in fundraising efforts. The Visionaires present its first fundraiser of the season on Nov. 16, titled Christmas At The Grande Ole Dame, a love story played out at a famous old hotel. Starring is Desert resident Gavin MacLeod (The Love Boat, Mary Tyler Moore Show) along with local philanthropists Donna MacMillan, Barbara and Jerry Keller. There will be a wine reception preceding the performance, which will be serenaded by TFT children singing the sounds of the holidays. In fact, all the competitors had just one arm. Taking over three days, the race for the cup comprises two days of fourballs and foursomes, with singles matches on the final day. The Fightmaster Cup is the equivalent of the Ryder Cup, but for onearmed golfers from North America in an international format. The quality level of the Fightmaster Cup players is high, having players who can drive the ball 350+ yards, while others have handicaps around plus-0.2–meaning that on any given day, the holder of the handicap can match or break par on a regulation golf course. A Hal Lipson Salute To
Beverly Hills Own AM Radio Station
Did you know Beverly Hills has its own radio station? It's a really cool throwback mix which features Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole and legendary crooners. I am referring of course, to the newly launched, “Unforgettable 1260AM” which just switched formats from classical music to The Great American Songbook. This is old timey radio at its best and love the B.H. reference on station ID's. Station owner Saul Levine, who has been an advertiser in the Courier, is going back to the “standards” format for the first time since 2011. Years ago, 1260AM was known as KGIL a San Fernando Valley-based radio station playing big bands and talk shows. It lasted until 1993, when Levine bought the station and began a news format. During the last 23 years, the station has been everything from '60s oldies, all Beatles, country, and Broadway show tunes. It's so great to hear songs of my parents’ vinyl album era (and my youth) on AM radio reminding me of summer nights driving in my dad's 1968 powder blue Chevy Caprice, with black vinyl roof and radio speaker on front dash and above back seat. KGIL was where I first heard Come Fly With Me, a Sinatra anthem, the harpsichord melody of Love Is Blue by Paul Mauriat and Fool On The Hill done by Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66. These are all present on the 1260 playlist which has an added bonus–no commercials! I tune in 1260AM at bedtime as a soothing lullabye and antidote to the Trump/Clinton furor. For some reason, hearing the music on the AM dial makes it that much more authentic. I remember hearing those legendary deejays like Gary Owens, Wink Martindale, and Bill Ballance on stations like KMPC, KFI and KGIL when I wasn't listening to my own '60s AM radio fave KHJ93 which all '60s kids tuned in on their pocket transistors. Now where's my Groom N' Clean?
Jerry Cutler On Film Rachel Weisz, Tom Wilkinson and Timothy Spall star in Denial, a simple yet very moving story about vociferous Holocaust denier David Irving. It is straight forward story told without cliches and haunting images meant to badger–just a reminder of a heinous time in history that should never be forgotten. Spall as Irving is chillingly good as the adamant, self-centered Holocaust denier who is shamed and brought down by a no-nonsense diminutive school teacher, Deborah Lipstatd, played with admirable restraint by Oscar winner Weisz. The searing screenplay by David Hare is based on Lipstadt’s History On Trial: My Day In Court With A Holocaust Denier. Building an iron clad defense against the smug Irving who had sued Lipstatd in England claiming defamation when she accused him of lying, is the English barrister, acted with calm and with cautious restraint, Richard Rampton (Wilkinson), who berates Irving for his hateful rhetoric and blinded beliefs. The sensitive subject is humanely presented especially when they visit the gray ghost-like barren terrain of Auschwitz. It is a haunting and powerful scene and registers the somber effect of devastation and hopelessness. Rampton decries the lack of the concentration camp’s extensive forensic records and with his solicitor, Andrew Scott as Anthony Julius, they set out to prove the essential truth. Obviously, Denial is a sensitive subject but all involved handle the story with the respect and esteem it so richly deserves. 3 out of 4 Bagels

Stephanie Koffler Joins Polsinelli Law Firm In Century City
Beverly Hills Post Office Veteran Retires; Says Good-Bye To The City She Loves The following is a letter from Helen Lee who just retired after serving 29 years at the Beverly Hills Post Office: “Leaving Beverly Hills”–it’s not the title of a new movie but I’ve been waiting for this day a long time. Aug. 31 was my last day after 29 years at the Beverly Hills Post Office. I’ve been so lucky enough to work in this beautiful City with nice customers and dedicated co-workers. Even if we live in the most hi-tech, SMS world, we have feelings to send birthday cards, sympathy and love notes. Also when it comes to important times of people’s lives, such as weddings, kid’s Bar Mitzvahs or applying for schools and jobs, they come to the post office. I remember this young mother came to the post office every day for six weeks to send books to her daughter who was in camp. She told me there was no computer or phone. At Christmastime, people send packages to their family, either in the states or overseas. I can usually tell where they originally came from. It was fun to help people when they needed it at the counter. I want to give special thanks to Beverly Hills Postmaster Koula Fuller, for helping me go through my difficult times. I also want to thank my long-time customers who took me to Madeo’s, Lawry’s and Nate’n Al for my retirement. I will love to come back to this area – not for working, but window shopping and dining. Thank you all! Helen Lee

Another Phobia From Roger Lefkon
FEAR OF LIVING TO BE 100! Although growing older is inevitable, modern medical breakthroughs suggest that life expectancy may increase dramatically. In this regard I have always been fearful of living to be 100, that’s 36,525 days, including leap years, and lots of anxiety attacks, constipation and bad dreams. On the plus side, there is generally a first rate selection of congratulatory birthday cards to choose from, not the run of the mill, inane, age related ones found in the humor section of the drug store but warm, heartfelt, spiritual messages written by out of work death row chaplains and hospice practitioners, all displayed in the special occasions section, adjacent to the sympathy cards. On the other hand, there will be virtually no one left to send me a celebratory card since I will, in all probability, outlive all of my family, friends, doctors, insurance agents, lawyers, maitre d’s and even my Tai Chi instructor who taught me internal discipline before succumbing to a Chinese take out order of Kung Pao chicken. The autopsy confirmed it was the chili peppers that did him in. Phyllis, my significant other, might still be around but would lack the mobility and sense of direction required to get to Rite Aid, find the greeting cards section and then locate a mail box. It is no secret that with advancing age comes an array of debilitating, painful, degenerative conditions that can significantly reduce your quality of life and, in a worse case scenario, may even prompt you to want to give up sex, something even more painful then undergoing a root canal procedure. So when confronted with the deterioration of body parts, it’s important to know where to go for replacements. My first inclination was to pay a visit to the Body Parts Unlimited Warehouse located next to a cemetery in Orange County. The BPUW is like Costco but with a limited selection of merchandise and, as you might expect, its customer profile skews a lot older but unlike Costco there are no free samples handed out at lunch time. They also require a minimum purchase of four body parts, no mix and matching, and have a strict no return policy. However, upon further reflection I decided that it made more sense to procure my replacement parts from sources demonstrating their superiority. For a new heart to replace my aging organ, I choose Japan where a steady diet of fish protects against plaque build up in the arteries and contributes to a long life. I know what you’re thinking--does mayonnaise enriched tuna salad with coleslaw and a Kosher Pickle qualify? Sadly, it does not but if your doctor says that you only have two weeks to live, then go for it. In need of a new lung, then pay a visit to Switzerland where folks climb mountains just to get in their front door. A regimen of hiking and mountaineering trumps the sedentary lives of most Americans as well as the population of Tonga where the king weighs in at 461 pounds, 491 with his crown. In need of a new knee then visit Kenya, home of the world’s foremost marathon runners. These guys have never had to contend with knee replacement surgery followed by months of physical therapy and a lifetime dependence on Aleve. Okinawa has the fewest hip fractures of any place on earth, therefore it would be hip to drop in on this Pacific island and leave with a fresh ball and socket joint and the good news is that you don’t have to list it on your customs declaration form. As for a new schnoz, it’s off to Italy where the Roman nose, sported by Julius Caesar, Tom Cruise and Celine Dion wins “best in show” with it’s prominent bridge and soft sloping tip. As I approach centenarian status and prepare to be labeled a “rare species,” there are any number of daily functions that are no longer within my reach. My limited computer skills have deserted me and as a result all of my user names, contacts, and files seem to have disappeared into the digital abyss, never again to be recalled. Mobile apps, which have taken over my life, have also pulled a disappearing act. Without Google maps how will I get home? No more Skype means no more face to face conversations with my pharmacist and the countermen at Nate n’ Al’s and the loss of “Angry Birds” signifies that I can no longer take out my hostility on Miss Piggy. I will also miss “Pickuplines” which comes in handy while standing in the supermarket check out line, and “Fat Booth” which showed me what I will look like, with no hair and a few extra pounds, when I hit the century mark. The one saving grace of turning 100 is the opportunity to have this life altering event recognized by Al Roker and shared with his Today Show viewers who will be thrilled to see my photo displayed on a jar of Smuckers strawberry preserves. It doesn’t get any better than this! My fear of approaching triple digits also encourages binge viewing. No one wants to cash in their chips while there are still new episodes of House Of Cards to catch on Netflix so do as I do and stream the entire new season in one 24 hour period. That means having breakfast, lunch, cocktails, dinner and a late night helping of Haagen-Dazs chocolate/chocolate chip ice cream while sitting in front of the TV. Frank Sinatra nailed it when he said: “May you live to be 100 and may the last voice you hear be mine!” Beverly Hills resident Roger Lefkon is a veteran TV writer/producer, former senior executive with Merv Griffin Entertainment, and author of The World Is A Really Scary Place!

MARCIA WILSON HOBBS Opinion: Dalian Wanda Group’s Dealings In Beverly Hills Follow A Familiar Script For those keeping up with the goings on in China, a familiar story is beginning to play out in Beverly Hills with the Dalian Wanda Group’s public attacks against the Hilton Initiative. Of course, in China, it might not get reported quite the same way as it has in the pages of the Beverly Hills Courier. That’s because China’s government, led by President Xi Jinping, has instituted strict censorship policies on the country’s media members. In China, almost without notice, any website can be taken down for any period of time if it’s tagged with the “politically incorrect” label. This summer, the Cyberspace Administration of Wang Jianlin China (CAC) cracked down on several online news sites. Those closures came on the heels of Xi’s suspending the social media accounts of Ren Zhiqiang, an outspoken tycoon who had publicly challenged Xi’s demands for “absolute loyalty” from the Chinese press. Xi paid a visit to the headquarters of China Central Television earlier this year and demanded that Chinese media “bears the party’s surname.” Xi’s control has grown increasingly concerning for those in China because, as the International Business Times reported earlier this year, critics worried that his “consolidated power was preventing China from navigating multiple looming problems, including an economic slowdown and an ongoing healthcare corruption investigation.” As Geremie Barmé, one of Australia's foremost historians, was quoted earlier this year in The Economist, "Xi is the chairman of everything." Xi has a reported relationship with Wanda chief and China’s richest man, Wang Jianlin, whose Wanda Group owns AMC Theatres chain, Legacy Entertainment, is in talks to acquire Dick Clark Productions, and is behind the One Beverly Hills project at 9900 Wilshire. A New York Times investigation last year found that a sister and brother-in-law of Xi purchased large stakes of Dalian Wanda Commercial Properties just before it went public. The shares purchased through a holding company for $28.6 million in 2009, the Times reported, had ballooned to a worth of $201 million by 2009. Wang, for his part, denied that the financial relationship Wanda had with the relatives of China’s president had any bearing on his company’s rapid growth. “We owe our rapid growth to our core competence of innovative business model and effective management practices,” Wang was quoted as saying, before adding that Xi’s sister Qi Qiaoqiao and her husband Deng Jiagui had sold their shares before Wanda made its initial public offering. The Times, however, found that corporate records showed the couple had transferred ownership of the holding company used to purchase the shares in October 2013. Wang said the two sold their stake two months before the I.P.O., which would have been exactly a year later in October 2014, meaning the two still owned their shares even after, on paper at least, the ownership had been transferred. The Times also found that Wanda’s pre-I.P.O. documents showed that the holding company still owned Wanda shares as of mid-August 2014. Xi’s siblings aside, the Times’ report also found that relatives or business associates of three of China’s other top officials held shares in two of Wang’s companies. Clearly, those relationships, and the financial successes that have come with it have given Wang more than a little bit of an ego boost. Just a few months ago, he took aim at Disney, warning Mickey Mouse and friends not to open their theme park in Shanghai. “One tiger cannot compete with a pack of wolves,” Xi said. “Shanghai has one Disney, but Wanda has 15 to 20 theme parks across China.” In his continued efforts to fight off Disney, Wang this week opened its new Wanda City theme park in the city of Hefei, the second in a planned 15 multibillion-dollar theme parks in China. So what does it all mean for Beverly Hills? As it has done against Disney, Wanda appears to be taking a similarly aggressive stance here in its vehement opposition to its neighboring Hilton Initiative, spearheaded by the Beverly Hilton, the City’s largest taxpayer. There doesn’t appear to be any reason the two can’t co-exist, but that hasn’t stopped Wanda from funding the “No on HH” campaign with – as reported last week in the Courier – accusations of foreign money being funneled in. Ironically, Wanda announced Thursday that it had fired an executive implicated in the bribery of a local government official in China stemming from an incident in the mid 2000s. Wang certainly doesn’t have control of American media like Xi does in China, but that hasn’t stopped those locally in favor of Wanda’s Beverly Hills development to make attempts at censorship on their own. One resident wrote publicly last week that the Courier should lose advertising because of its reporting on Wanda’s squabble with the Hilton. That line of thinking sounds like it would go over a lot smoother in Xi’s People’s Republic of China than it ever would in the United States of America. Essentially, “since we don’t like what you’re reporting, we want to hit you where it hurts the most – your wallet.” Once again, for those following closely in China - sound familiar? –– Matt Lopez

Astrology By Holiday Mathis TODAY'S BIRTHDAY (Sept. 30). It's a lucky year for saving up for big-ticket items or bucket-list experiences. Sources of income crop up as you tell more and more people about what you do. In October, you'll call a few key shots and be put in charge. Families come together in December. March and July will be the most adventurous. Scorpio and Taurus adore you. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Sincerity may not be the flashiest of qualities, but it's high on your list of attractive qualities in a loved one these days. Knowing whom you can trust and feeling the truth of that person's affection will bring comfort and delight now. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Recognize your own strengths -not because you need a pat on the back or because the ego boost will feel good, but because the others are going to miss out on the best part of you if you don't know what that is. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). You'll be accused of generosity, thoughtfulness, amazing selflessness. None of this rings true to you. You think of your loved ones all of the time; it only follows that you would want to spoil them. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Determination is a talent in and of itself, and today, it combines with another one of your talents, making you absolutely indomitable. Most will respect your top status without challenge. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). They trust you because you do as you say you will when it matters -- and when it doesn't. Big and small matters get the same level of integrity from you. None of your words are too inconsequential to honor. PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar. 20). You're excellent company because you take responsibility for and pay attention to all of the signals zinging back and forth between you, your environment and everyone within it. ARIES (Mar. 21-Apr. 19). You care enough to learn everything about your subject of interest, and that's just the attitude that will allow you to mesmerize the powers that be with your in-depth analysis and study. TAURUS (Apr. 20-May 20). You're like a radio station with a 24hour request line. The stream of suggestions may be endless, but you're not obligated to honor any of these requests. Ultimately you'll play what you want to play. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). You need more than the usual amount of rest now to recharge and heal the daily wear and tear that affects your body and mind. There's no need to feel guilty for sleeping in, napping or turning in early. CANCER (June 22-July 22). You feel where someone is coming from, and then stay one step ahead of the game. You're an expert at figuring out the motives of complicated characters. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). What you want will cause a rub with what someone else wants, and the power dynamic will be worked out in interesting ways. What happens will be as much about your will as it is about the politics of the situation. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). You seldom make promises or pacts, but today there's something you might enjoy promising, and there's an equally enjoyable demand the other person would, in turn, request of you.
