Updated from web article, Oct 19: After stalling for nearly ten months and hiding its technical data from the public and most of its own board members, the staff of the Metropolitan Transit Authority this afternoon reported to its Planning Committee a tunnel under Beverly Hills High School is the “only” safe route to build the Westside Subway Extension into Century City.

The just-released information caused a furious response from angry MTA board members over manipulation by Third District Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. The route is the one favored by Century City developers JMB Realty and the Century Plaza Hotel ownership. Both have made massive campaign contributions to the Los Angeles politicians.

The MTA made this information available months ago to Yaroslavsky and Villaraigosa while other board members were kept in the dark.

East West Bancorp Reports Financial Results For Third Quarter, Earnings Per Share Increase East West Bancorp, Inc., parent company of East West Bank which has branches in Beverly Hills and Century City, reported financial results for the third quarter of 2011. Net income was $62.4 million or $0.41 per dilutive share, a 33 percent or a $15.5 million increase from the prior year period.

“Earnings per share for the third quarter was a solid $0.41, an increase of 52 percent from the prior year,” stated Dominic Ng, chairman /CEO. “We are committed to ensuring longterm stable growth and earn-

ings by thinking strategically and growing the business for the future while maintaining a strong focus on current profitability and navigating through the current challenges faced by all financial institutions. These strategic actions have resulted in solid loan growth, a stable net interest margin, and reduced credit costs, resulting in net income for the quarter of $62.4 million, up 3 percent from the second quarter of 2011 and up 33 percent from the third quarter of 2010.”

Buresh Hosts Community Walk Through Of Potential BHHS Tunnel

By Marla Schevker BHUSD expert and former Chief Operating Officer for the LAUSD Tim Buresh hosted a walk-through Tuesday of the areas at Beverly Hills High School that will be affected by the potential Westside Subway Extension tunnel. Many community members, including Planning Commissioner Nan Cole and Beverly Vista PTA copresident Laurie Okum, and school board candidates Noah Margo, Lewis Hall and Frances Bilak attended.

Buresh explained that the concerns of putting a tunnel under Beverly High are twofold. The first concern is

what will occur during construction: will the natural settlement that will occur damage the buildings in any way? How drastically will the noise and vibration affect the students?

The second concern, after the tunnel has been built, is noise.

Buresh said the most effective way to protect against any impacts of the subway tunnel is to allow distance and separation between the tunnel and the surface. The tunnel will be approximately 70 feet from the surface. It will need to climb the 50-ft difference from Beverly High to Century City and (see ‘WALK THROUGH,’ page 7)

Beverly Gardens Art Show Affaire Returns

By Krystal Leach de Amante Spectators toured the plush art-filled greenscape at the Beverly Gardens last weekend during the City’s semi-annual Affaire in the Gardens Art Show.

The show featured a fourblock radius of carefully assembled artwork from both prominent and emerging artists across the country. The popular show is nearing its 40-year presence in the Beverly Hills

community. While some artists are returnees from last spring’s show, others have participated for years.

Husband and wife team Harvey Leshnick and Deborah Kelfer are proud owners of Malibu-based Kelfer Studios.

They specialize in organic cabinet knobs, sculpture and jewelry.

“We’ve been coming to the show for years,” she explained.

“It’s always such a fantastic

crowd.”

The couple was not alone in their praise: “As far as I’m concerned this is the best show in California,” said award-winning fine art photographer Martin Waterman. “The ambiance, the way the city takes care in laying it out---it’s all very artistoriented.”

Candidate Debate Canceled Over Scheduling School Board Candidate Frances Bilak suddenly lost her endorsement

by Councilwoman Lili Bosse Thursday.

Bosse withdrew her support of Bilak after the candidate bullied a Beverly Hills High School student trying to organize a candidate debate for Nov. 4.

This incident joins others that raise serious questions about Bilak’s temperament for public office.

Beverly High Senior and Let’s Talk Politics host Max Schwartz began organizing debate for the school board candidates in August. The event was set for 6 to 7 p.m., a time when Jewish families are generally at home lighting candles and observing the Sabbath.

When Bilak alerted Schwartz to the scheduling conflict about two weeks ago, he immediately attempted to rearrange the date and/or time of the debate. When that wasn’t possible, he canceled the debate as to not show favoritism towards one candidate’s preference versus another’s.

“Unfortunately, the best thing to do was to cancel (the debate) because

it wouldn’t be fair to accommodate some and not others,” Schwartz said.

“The most feasible option was to cancel the debate. I tried to do a service to the community and it’s unfortunate it can’t occur.”

The two mainly communicated via e-mail beginning after the Oct. 5 Teen BHEF candidates debate when Schwartz reminded Bilak that she had not responded to his request for her to attend the debate. Although Bilak was polite and respectful at first, her tone quickly escalated to one of aggression and bullying.

“I will be letting the newspapers know tomorrow as well as the synagogues know of your decision,” Bilak wrote in an e-mail on Oct. 17. “I had told them that I believed you would respect the Sabbath and everyone’s decision to have dinner with their families on the Sabbath. I am deeply disappointed at your decision.”

BV PTA To Host Movie Night Tonight The Beverly Vista PTA will be holding a movie night tonight at the BV auditorium. They will be showing Tim Burtons The Nightmare Before Christmas.

The movie will begin at 7 p.m. and dinner will be available to purchase from Fresh Brothers, 6 to 6:45 p.m.

The Beverly Vista PTA has teamed up with LACMA to give away two fami-

ly passes for the Tim Burton Exhibit, at LACMA until Oct. 31. Families attending movie night will be eligible for a raffle at the conclusion of the meeting.

The movie night will also feature a desert sale. Those who bring a pumpkin will receive a free desert. All pumpkins will be donated to charity after the event.

Council To Create Plastic Bag Ban Ordinance

By Krystal Leach de Amante Beverly Hills City Council agreed to start the process of creating a citywide plastic bag ban ordinance during Tuesday’s study session meeting.

At the request of Councilman John Mirisch, councilmembers decided to initiate the next step in creating a plastic bag ordinance, to include assessing its potential impact on local retail stores. Councilmembers were presented with a report by the Department of Public Works and Transportation regarding Los Angeles County’s current efforts pertaining to its own plastic bag

ordinance.

“There was a voluntary goal included in (L.A. County’s) ordinance that benchmarked a 30-percent reduction of plastic bags by July 1, 2010,” said BH Dept. of Public Works and Transportation Senior Managing Analyst Daniel Cartagena. “The department at the county level was not able to determine if we achieved that goal.”

City Debuts New iPhone/iPad Application

By Krystal Leach de Amante The City of Beverly Hills introduced its new mobile iPhone/iPad application to the public during the Affaire in the Gardens Art Show last weekend.

The application is available for download free of charge through the online Apple App Store under the name “Visit Beverly Hills.” The City’s Fine Arts Commission and Information Technology Department worked together to design a user-friendly application that allows visitors to navigate the many events and attractions in Beverly Hills.

Their original intent for the application was to provide an online public art walking tour, however, other useful cate-

gories were soon discovered during development. In addition to public art, users can map city facilities, events and attractions, parks, and public parking.

Each location listing is accompanied with descriptive information, complimented by photos and in some cases, a short video clip pertaining to specific points of interest.

“This release of version 1 marks only the beginning of information technology’s involvement with mobile devices,” said Alain Romero, Web Application Integrator for the City’s IT department. “An Android (mobile phone device) version is being scooped out and version 2 of the iPhone app is already in progress.”

All county jails are managed by Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca, a San Marino resident. Sheriff Baca said publicly that he “is open to new ideas” and has expressed his support for looking into jail practices. Now, rookie deputies are routinely assigned to the

colleges and universities with subway tunnels underneath them. Those schools, however, are not governed by the Field Act. According to Buresh, at the surface there is approximately 140 feet where the district cannot build over the tunnel. Buresh called this area the zone of influence, an area that will be either impossible, due to safety regulations, or prohibitively expensive to build on.

nal Environmental Impact Report. Brucker and Vice Mayor Willie Brien, joined by Councilmember Julian Gold, have refused to fight the MTA’s tunnel under Beverly High. Despite knowing the outcome, Brucker has acted and spoken as though he did not know it.

The “report” concluded – not surprisingly – that a tunnel under Beverly High would be “safe,” that new construction at the high school would not be impeded, and that the Beverly High tunnel is the “only” route into Century City.

Councilwoman Lili Bosse said the conclusions of the MTA reports were not a surprise to her.

“I believed from day one, when the Constellation Station came up as a ‘new alternative’ we all knew that somehow the MTA science would come back with this outcome,” Bosse said.

MTA experts said it was safe to build on top of the subway tunnels and “normal construction will work.” The soil that rests on top of the tunnel is heavy and building on top of it will be less weight on the tunnels then the removed soil. They also said there would be approximately 70 ft. from the top of the tunnel to the surface.

According to the MTA experts, there are two earthquake faults that run along and cross Santa Monica Boulevard re-

spectively: the Santa Monica Fault and the West Beverly Hills Lineament (or the northern part of the Newport Inglewood Fault). Because the proposed station would rest parallel to the earthquake faults, it was recommended that Santa Monica Boulevard not be an option.

Constellation Avenue had no evidence of fault activity.

Board Vice President Brian Goldberg said he believed it was telling that MTA gave only an oral report and has not provided the data to the BHUSD yet so the districts experts can review it. Yet, he said he still remains hopeful.

“We shouldn’t jump to conclusions until we have a chance to see the data and the science that supports their oral presentation from Wednesday,” Goldberg said. “It would be telling of how serious a threat the Santa Monica Fault is to see whether the city of Los Angeles is going to allow the proposed SunCal building on the corner of Moreno and Santa Monica Boulevard to be 37 stories tall. If the city of Los Angeles isn’t prepared to do that kind of ban then we know this is just smoke and mirrors to get what they’ve wanted all along, a stop at Constellation.”

A Message to the Community from Mayor Barry Brucker

I am writing to you today, to set the record straight, once and for all! I have never supported the Constellation alignment that requires tunneling under Beverly Hills High School. My position on this matter, as well as the entire City Council’s position, has been unwavering.

Unfortunately, there has been misinformation and rumors spread about my position, as well as Vice Mayor Willie Brien’s stance. In fact, because of our concerns, both Vice Mayor Willie Brien and I proposed to Metro a creative third alternative route on Santa Monica Boulevard between Avenue of the Stars and Century Park East. This alignment would incorporate a Park and Ride opportunity (the only one slated for the Westside extension), resulting in increased ridership and a cost savings of $60-$100 million. Currently, this option is still under consideration by Metro.

An alignment that avoids tunneling under Beverly Hills High School has always been a common goal for everyone. What is not common is the approach that the City and the School District have taken to reach the same goal.

So, what is next? On Wednesday, Oct. 19, Metro is scheduled to release its report on the seismic study of the two alternatives. The City Council has already retained outside geotechnical seismic and tunneling experts so we are ready immediately to conduct an independent analysis upon the release of this MTA report.

If Metro’s report shows that the Santa Monica alignment is seismically unstable and not safe for the alignment—and if our experts concur with their analysis—then the City will need to reevaluate our position and look at ALL options available to us.

These options range from legal challenges to (if all else fails) securing a robust financial commitment from Metro to rebuild the high school to accommodate growth projections for the next 50+ years with unparalleled safety standards.

Because we have had an ongoing dialogue with Metro and have not launched personal attacks on MTA board members, we are well positioned to continue our candid dialogues to help secure the best possible outcome for Beverly Hills.

The City will continue to work tirelessly to get all the facts, to have them analyzed by our independent experts, and to persuade Metro to make the right choice, the safe choice, the only choice that puts the well being of the children of Beverly Hills first.

Richard Neutra's Kronish House Sold to Preservation-Minded Buyer The last house in Beverly Hills designed by World War II architect Richard Neutra is safe.

The Los Angeles Conservancy told The Courier it just learned that escrow has closed on the Kronish House and the buyer intends to restore the home. The name of the buyer has not been disclosed.

"The Kronish House has dodged the wrecking ball, and we could not be more thrilled," said Linda Dishman, the Conservancy's executive director. "This outcome is a testament to the very hard work of many people, the willingness of the City and the owner to give preservation a chance, and the power of public support."

Completed in 1955, the Kronish House came close to being demolished this summer. It was sold in a foreclosure auction in January for $5.8 million and placed on the market in April for nearly $14 million. As first reported in The Courier, the house was put into jeopardy after the owners, Soda Partners, LLC. began the demolition process by applying for a permit to cap the sewer line.

In an e-mailed statement, Soda Partners LLC attorney Mitch Dawson said after many attempts to sell the property “as is”, the owners felt the property would “be more readily sold” if it had two flat acres rather than the house which needed “significant rehabilitation.”

The City Council discussed the possibility of an urgency ordi-

nance to prevent the Kronish House demolition at their Aug. 2 meeting. The council negotiated to delay the demolition for a minimum of 60 days or until Oct. 10.

“Mayor (Barry) Brucker, that very evening cobbled together a compromise which ultimately led to the saving of the Neutra House,” Dawson said. “Brucker worked diligently through the lengthy session so as to strike an agreement which would satisfy the Conservancy and Neutra as well as Soda Partners who had a lawful right to proceed to demolition consistent with City requirements.”

The Conservancy, its volunteer Modern Committee, Dion Neutra, and others launched intense advocacy efforts that fueled a public outcry, including nearly 600 letters to the City of Beverly Hills. During the 60-day demolition delay, the Conservancy and many others focused their efforts on finding a buyer for the home.

As the Oct. 10 deadline passed, the preservation community grew increasingly concerned about the likely imminent demolition of the home. Fortunately, final talks were under way with a buyer who had come forward with an interest in restoring the highly intact home.

"The Conservancy was a very positive factor in finding the ideal buyer for this kind of home," said Realtor Susan Smith, who represents the seller of the Kronish House.

Emerging artist Stephen Taylor said his inspiration is drawn from the works of Jackson Pollack, Marcel Duchamp and Picasso’s cubist period.

Taylor’s abstract surrealist charcoal and canvas sketches depict an unusual juxtaposition of bone. His award-winning piece Eternal Infancy “creates movement within the

Taylor also displayed his 10-foot Van Halen tribute guitar sculpture, as he is one of six artists chosen to participate in the public art project dotting Sunset strip.

The Beverly Gardens art show is the City’s largest public art event and with more than 250 artists, various food venues, live music and children’s activities, there was no shortage of fun to be had for all.

Council Approves CalPERS Retirement Annuitant Program

By Marla Schevker This October, the Beverly Hills Police Department had 15 personnel retire, representing an 11 percent loss in sworn staffing. In an attempt to make up for the loss of professional personnel, the City Council, at their Tuesday meeting, gave direction for the BHPD to begin a CalPERS Retirement Annuitant Program.

The Retirement Annuitant Program will allow retired police officers to continue to assist the BHPD on a paid basis, as long as they have a specialized skill and they don’t exceed a maximum of 960 hours during a fiscal year. These officers will be available to provide mentoring and other training to officers, such as those involved in the Department of Homeland Security

projects or a detective assigned to the crimes against persons detail (formerly robbery/homicide).

According to Commander Theresa Goldman, the Retirement Annuitant Program will save the City money in the long run. A traditional officers being paid overtime will cost approximately $723,472 in 960 hours, whereas an officer with the Retirement Annuitant Program will cost $421,132.

Retired officers would not be eligible for benefits or bonuses.

Goldman said officers that the BHPD intends to hire back are already retired and receiving money from their pensions. However, she said the program needed to be looked at as a business decision and should not be considered dou-

ble dipping.

“This is a cost effective program that allows us to continue the service levels we currently enjoy,” Goldman said.

Councilman John Mirisch said he believed it was double dipping but ultimately unavoidable.

“It’s something we have to do because we don’t want to compromise the safety (of our residents) and because we’re transitioning to a longer term solution.”

According to the staff report, the average time between a position being identified and that position being filled is approximately four months.

Goldman said the BHPD is currently in the process of hiring new officers.

daily effects of a rare devastating liver disease known as biliary atresia gathered last week at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles’ (CHLA) Saban Research Institute for a day of education and support.

Known as Biliary Atresia Day, the first-of-its-kind event sponsored by CHLA allowed participants to learn from physician experts at the hospital as well as from each other.

Physicians provided lectures on current treatments and issues facing patients while long-term survivors told personal stories of living with the disease.

“We showed families that they are not alone in their struggles,” said CHLA pediatric surgeon Dr. Kasper Wang,, who is also co-author of a recent national research study on the disease. “This was such an

Biliary atresia is a liver disease affecting newborns with malfunctioning bile ducts. The ducts are responsible for transporting the waste away from the liver to the gallbladder where it is stored before entering the digestive system.

In the case of biliary atresia, the ducts are either not properly formed or are blocked, and immediate surgery is necessary to drain bile from the liver.

Even with early intervention, newborns can still face up to a 50 percent risk for liver failure that requires a liver transplant in the future.

Biliary atresia is rare in that only 1 in 10,000 babies are born with the disease annually, making it about as common as childhood leukemia.

Approximately 130 cases have been documented via a national database and CHLA treats 10 to 12 cases per year.

“Thanks to her efforts along with those of Women’s Guild, a decade later, we now have eight full time doctors and a staff of 30.”

He pointed out that breast cancer research and treatment was an evolving science in those days with physicians treating it in a myriad of ways.

“Specialists used virtually different languages on reports so communication was difficult to comprehend from one another. We’ve solved this problem by having weekly seminars every Thursday so we are always on the same page.”

Rome explained the importance of Oppenheimer’s donations, “These funds are used by

faculty to investigate their new ideas and obtain preliminary results---a necessary element to obtaining agency, federal government and other foundation grants.”

Neurobiologist and faculty researcher Dr. Tom Otis is one of 20 recipients of Oppenheimer’s seed grants.

“The grant has allowed us to

begin some projects that use really exciting new techniques,” he said. “Having the ability to do experiments and show that the ideas are feasible is really important.”

Otis explained that the Oppenheimer seed grant helped him achieve solid laboratory results, findings. He now hopes to receive federal grant money, a highly competitive process, to further his research in curing genetic cerebellum diseases.

Oppenheimer has given approximately $5 million in seed grants, leading to more than $300 million in additional research funding for the school.

But his overall philanthropy efforts at the school far exceed his financial contributions. He is also a trustee of the UCLA Foundation, a board member of UCLA’s Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, its Center on Aging and the school’s board of visitors at

Gail said her favorite research topics are those dealing with alternative medicine. In fact, her husband also funds the UCLA Center for East-West Medicine, which blends modern western medical methods with traditional Chinese medicine.

“When I started exploring the research seed grant, more than 20 years ago, I never truly envisioned how successful this program would become,” Oppenheimer reflected. “Gail and I believe that while the funding is a vital component of the program’s success, it is also a reflection of the quality research proposals that are submitted.”

From the Publisher CLIF SMITH HOW TO GET PLAYED FOR THE . . .

We want to thank Mayor Barry Brucker for again blindsiding his own council by, this time, sending out a widely-distributed professional-looking “Message to the Community” eblast email. The email went out Tuesday while he was closeted with his city council colleagues in closed session. He did not tell them. (Did the PR firm he hired at city expense create it?)

Why are we critical of our mayor? Because he has personally conducted a crusade to keep the City of Beverly Hills defenseless and unprepared for the coming battle with MTA’s tunnel under Beverly Hills High School. He has pandered to Los Angeles politicians while attacking our own School Board (he also adds The Courier to his enemies list, but not Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky or Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.)

We are very grateful for his “Message.” In it, he confirms just about everything The Courier has been reporting for months. We ask our readers to compare his “Message” (reprinted in full on page 8 of this issue) with what just happened at the Metropolitan Transit Authority Planning Committee meeting Wednesday afternoon. At that meeting, what we have warned of came true and worse. This is the summary: just like Yaroslavsky, Villaraigosa and L.A. City Councilman Paul Koretz promised —we can expect the MTA to dig its subway tunnel right under Beverly Hills High School. While Brucker continues in his “Message” to tell us how cordial he is and what good relations he has with the MTA, Yaroslavsky and Villaraigosa, they dropped a bomb on him, Beverly Hills and even portions of Century City (especially those not owned by their campaign contributors).

Not only did MTA staff reject every single suggestion Brucker and fellow-MTA apologist Vice Mayor Willie Brien gave them to avoid the Beverly High tunnel, they concluded that there are so many earthquake faults around us that we must realize that the affected properties could be unbuildable and thus worthless—certainly not worth their current value.

For the dozens of Beverly Hills property owners who will get tunnels under their homes and properties, good luck getting even decent compensation from MTA for intrusion via “eminent domain” takings. Noise? Wait and see but MTA says “no more than 34 decibels.” Vibration? Wait and see but MTA says 72 decibels likely. What will your properties be worth in the meantime? Who knows? The noise and vibration will cloud your home values. The uncertainty means that you just lost tens of thousands, or maybe hundreds of thousands of dollars or more. Thank you, Barry Brucker.

Mayor Brucker has proudly told us that he has hosted Supervisor Yaroslavsky and MTA head Art Leahy in his home. His “cordiality,”he claims, is in stark contrast to the clear line-in-the-sand drawn by the Beverly Hills Unified School District Board of Education. When they (and The Courier) uncovered the “bait and switch” planned by MTA to put the tunnel under Beverly High, they said “no way.” Councilman John Mirisch said “no way.” Councilwoman Lili Bosse said “no way” Councilman Julian Gold campaigned with “no way” but promptly joined Brucker and Brien in refusing to fight.

Worse, they refused to prepare to fight.

Our own Marla Schevker, denied access to MTA documents to prove the suspicion, found the “smoking guns” in the City of Los Angeles Planning Department. We chased down documentary proof that the subway route our own citizens committee approved was now gone. When we published that information, the MTA cried “foul” and accused us of printing falsehoods. Brucker said we engaged in “Yellow Journalism.” He likes to keep saying that, along with his personal insults of elected leaders of the school board.

Read Brucker’s “Message.” He tells us that he will get the school district lots of MTA money. Oh? The MTA “experts” said there is no impact on the campus, which means no money. All along, Brucker has tried to persuade us, the PTAs and everyone else that he can cut a deal because he is “honey” and the School Board is “vinegar.” Those of us who have been around knew this was pure, utter naïve nonsense and, unfortunately, we can all say this is what we knew would happen. “We told you so.” Even Winnie the Pooh defends his honey jar more forcefully.

So, instead of preparing data, instead of working with the School Board like city councils did when personal injury celeb Erin Brockovich tried to hold up the district and the City for millions, he said, “I will do this alone.” Well, he, Brien and Gold stand convicted all alone. By themselves. They got rolled but good. They got played but good.

They have lost months of preparation time— months when they could have helped arm our School Board with facts and data and political clout. Instead, they insulted, criticized, undercut and undermined the very School Board whose official, legal job it is to defend our schools.

The Courier has written for months that Yaroslavsky and Villaraigosa work for the City of Los Angeles and are promoting the business interests of their campaign contributors in Century City. It was “not personal, just business.” That’s how politics works.

Heck, this writer has known Zev Yaroslavsky and his wife Barbara for years. He’s effective at what he does, but now what he’s doing is trashing Beverly Hills to benefit Los Angeles. How hard was that to figure out? We guess it was too hard for our mayor, the vice mayor and their rubber-stamp sidekick.

Now the fight really begins. Beverly Hills is truly fortunate that our School Board, led by President Lisa Korbatov (whom Brucker never tires of disparaging), Vice President Brian Goldberg, with Steven Fenton and Jake Manaster (even occasionally Myra Lurie) saw reality. They saw this coming. They are prepared.

Do we believe the MTA experts’ conclusions? No. Why not? Answer: they have had the data for nearly a year and refused to release it. If it truly backed up their opinions, they would have released it a long time ago. Instead, they stonewalled the BHUSD and their own board members until the last second. We believe that this was a deliberate effort to prevent anyone from challenging their conclusions by conducting their own research. If MTA’s paid consultants actually had the facts they claim, they would have shared the facts. They did not —they have done everything they could to hide them.

Brucker (whom we strongly believe knew for weeks what was coming, because he told us so) continued with the fake story of “let’s wait for the EIR” as though that really mattered.

We need leaders who will protect Beverly Hills, not offer honey.

Rabbi Jacob Pressman THOUGHT FOR FOOD I assume my educated readers are familiar with the Malthusian Theory. For the few who are not, let me introduce you to the Rev. Thomas Robert Malthus, an English scholar who lived from 1766 to 1834 and whose theories have been widely debated to this day. He maintained that population growth would one day exceed human capacity to feed and sustain it, and sooner or later the human population would be ravaged by famine and disease. Sounds pretty frightening, doesn’t it? However, at this moment there are whole populations starving, especially in Africa, for whom the United Nations, and especially the United States, are trying desperately to provide food.

I still remember a class in economics I took at the University of Pennsylvania in which the professor pooh-poohed the theory and maintained that as the human population grows, so will its capacity to feed itself. I listened, and hesitantly raised my hand and asked: “If the population keeps growing then by simple mathematics there will come a time when we just can’t produced enough food.”

“No, no,” he said, “the more people, the more food, forever.” Somehow, I wasn’t convinced.

At that time the U.S. was sending shiploads to a starving Russia, and after World War II rescued Europe from starvation. Could Malthus have been wrong, and there is no end to the world’s capacity to feed itself? Or, as others suggest, will there be massive starvation, and bloody wars keeping what’s left of the population alive?

At the present time every six seconds a child dies somewhere in the world. It is estimated 1 billion persons, or out of the 7 billion people in the world, 1 out of every 7 is lacking nourishment. I, for one, do not see any signs this situation can be reversed. Malthus claimed: “That the superior power of population is repressed, and the actual population kept equal to the means of subsistence by misery and vice.” I believe he was right. What do you think?

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dear Mayor Brucker, Thank you for your e-mail regarding the MTA and the issues regarding the route through Beverly Hills and the articles on the subject in The Courier.

Frankly, I am glad The Courier is making some sort of stand with or without errors and that you come to realize that the community at large elected all of you to serve us, and not as a dictator.

We have been residents of this wonderful city for over 40 years and have seen many mayors and city councils come and go. I believe that an issue with this council and your mayorship is that you and your colleagues do not listen to the wishes of the community. You seem to do what you want and that is not why we elected you and your council.

You were elected to serve us. I feel that each time I visit the council regarding a subject that is dear to me and the community, all I receive are blank stares.

I don’t feel that I am connecting with any of you and you aren’t listening to what I have to say.

I believe I stand for a lot of community members who do not want a subway under our high school or any school in Beverly Hills. Seismic faults aside, we simply do not want that route. It is therefore your job to inform the MTA and fight for us.

How can a route on Santa Monica Boulevard be more dangerous than digging under our high school which is probably two football fields away from the route under Santa Monica Boulevard?

You are constantly at odds with the school board when you should be working together. Frankly, I am not happy with your performance or the performance of Drs. Brien and Gold. I am sure that there are many other members of the community who feel the same way. You are basically running a dictatorship.

By the way, perhaps two years ago we had meeting after meeting about Roxbury Park and renovations. I hope that you review those meetings and make your decisions on the renovations based on what the community wants and not what you want.

Early detection is critical to the success of prostate cancer treatments. we’ve seen a nearly 40 percent reduction in prostate cancer mortality since PSA testing became commonplace for men over 50.

The new recommendation needlessly puts men in harm’s way. All men should be able to make an informed decision with their doctors about prostate cancer screening.

Dudley Danoff, MD, FACS ****** This past Tuesday there was a walk of the BHHS grounds and Century City for the school board candidates and invited citizens to inform us of the issues facing the district if the Metro board chooses the more expensive, more invasive route under our high school.

It’s not a pretty picture. I hope they’ll put up a video tour with the info soon–it's enlightening. The capper of the tour was walking from the BHHS to the two stops. If our group of (“ahem: past school-age residents”) can bear the trek from Santa Monica to Constellation without breaking a sweat (some of us in suits), I think commuters like me can. Certainly it's less than the walk that the people at the Century Plaza Towers take to get to lunch at the mall.

As a matter of fact, it’s the same distance shoppers in Century City Mall take to go from Macy’s to the Container Store. Without any moving sidewalks, DASH buses or monorails.
