Roxbury Park Plan Puts City Into Banquet Business The massive expansion of the Roxbury Park Community Center will boast a 10,000-sf banquet and catering facility. The City will thus be able to compete directly with its hotels, restaurants and other venues at taxpayer-subsidized prices. Taxes from hotel and restaurant banquets contribute substantially to City income. The facility would also compete with venues such as Sinai Temple and Temple Beth Am. The so-called “multi-purpose room” will hold two indoor basketball courts. It is adjoined by a full commercial kitchen capable of feeding hundreds of diners. City officials downplayed the kitchen by claiming it is only for “feeding seniors.” The new facility at Roxbury, sized from 2,500 to 10,000 feet, will put the City in direct competition for banquet, wedding, Bar Mitzvah, Bat Mitzvah, and other

events. A fulltime staff would likely added at City pay and benefits. It would be the third largest banquet hall in the City exceeded only by the International Ballroom of The Beverly Hilton and the Ballroom of the Beverly Wilshire. It would be larger than the Crystal Ballroom of the Beverly Hills Hotel. Citizens and neighborhood groups have attacked the plans but their complaints about inadequate parking, overtaxing the neighborhood, cost, raiding general funds and ignoring citizen input. The majority OKd the project by a 3-2 vote with Mayor Barry Brucker, Vice Mayor Willie Brien and Councilmember Julian Gold in favor. Reform council members John Mirisch and Lilli Bose voted against. The project is now out to construction bid with the banquet facility and full commercial kitchen included.

A Sage For All Ages Keeps Reinventing Himself At 95 By John L. Seitz Former Beverly Hills resident Stanley A. Dashew’s very first invention was, um, a mother of necessity. Chantal Sutherland – ‘A Jewel Of A Jockey’ Aims At Breeders Cup By John L. Seitz Back in the ’60s and ’70s, a beautiful and talented female jockey appeared on the local sports scene. Her name was Robyn Smith who eventually became Mrs. Fred Astaire of Beverly Hills. Now, a half century later, an equally beautiful and talented rider will take her place in the starting gate at Kentucky’s Churchill Downs tomorrow for the running of the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic. She will be aboard California-based Game On Dude, a semi-longshot, carrying the silks of the

late Beverly Hills-native Terry Lanni and his widow, Debbie, plus their partners: former Dodgers/Yankees’ manager Joe Torre, Ernest Moody and Bernie Schiappa. For Chantal Sutherland, the race gives her another chance to perform on one of racing’s grand stages and, if she comes out the winner, become the first woman rider to do so in the Classic’s 27-year history. In March, the same horse carried her to victory in the historic Santa Anita Handicap, another first-ever female feat in (see ‘CHANTAL,’ page 17)

Task Force Begins To Revitalize Southeast BH By Marla Schevker There is no denying the southeast part of Beverly Hills is not the most vibrant part of the City. But now a group consisting of Councilman John Mirisch and nine other residents who live in the southeast including Beverly Vista PTA Co-President Noah Margo, a Board of Education candidate; Horace Mann PTA Co-President Howard Goldstein and

Susan Mishler have formed a task force to help revitalize the area. “I think lots of people feel it’s the forgotten part of the City and there is certainly a need to upgrade that part of town,” Mirisch said. “We want to start with a blank slate and discuss what we can do as a City to try and upgrade that part of town.” Mirisch said he believed there were many opportunities

to create a vibe for that part of the City. They don’t want to remake it in the image of the triangle, but it’s still Beverly Hills. “We have a unique opportunity to create something special,” Mirisch said. “We’d like some basic amenities to make the area more walk-able– some restaurants, boutiques or supermarkets.” Because there are several (see ‘SOUTHEAST,’ page 13)

ly proposed project, the final project was code complaint and did not require any zone changes. The building will be approximately 45 feet tall with 70 below ground service bays and 352 parking spaces. The loading area was moved to Wilshire Boulevard and the Lexus dealership will be responsible for putting a traffic signal at the corner of Wilshire and Maple and a center median on Maple to prevent traffic on South Maple Drive. Yukelson said by remodeling the dealership, Lexus will have to abide by requirements in a conditional use permit (CUP) to continue operating its business. These conditions include complying with the City’s noise ordinance, picking up all trash and debris at the end of the day and using the loading zone on Wilshire. “(The CUP) makes sure it does not impact their neighbors to the south of them,” Yukelson said. “If they don’t abide by one of these conditions, we

can potentially pull their CUP and they may not be able to operate as a car dealership.” According to the applicant, Lexus contributes approximately $750,000 to the City in annual sales taxes and predicts annual post-construction revenue could be an additional $500,000. Yukelson said the Lexus dealership, which contributes a great deal to charitable endeavors in Beverly Hills, had a strong desire to work with its neighbors to minimize impacts. “Personally, I think the applicant came a long way,” Yukelson said. “They’ve said (they’re not interested in being a bad neighbor) all along the way, and have accommodated our commissions requests at significant additional expense throughout the project process.” Dawson said the project is great for the City of Beverly Hills and for Jim Falk Lexus. “(There was) a great deal of even handed effort by the Planning Department staff and a willingness of Jim Lexus Falk to meet the needs of the neighborhood and community,” Dawson said.

Yigal Azrouël presented his Spring 2012 Collection. To further support CII year round, Rochelle Gores Fredston launched her own charity group, Philanthropic Society Los Angeles (PSLA), to bring together a group of forwardminded young professionals to raise funds and awareness for Children’s Institute, Inc. style, type, period or method of construction; or a property that has listed or been formally determined eligible by the National Park Service for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. Yukelson also said the commission wants to look into creating a list of architects who have built in the City that could be considered historic and the possible implementation of a 90-day cooling off period before allowing the owner to demolish the building. Currently a demolition permit is

ministerial and as with the Neutra House, 90 days may be the difference in finding a buyer to preserve the house and allowing the house to be demolished. The historic preservation ordinance will come back to the Planning Commission before the end of the year. Yukelson predicted it would take one or two meetings before the ordinance is ready to go before the City Council. Last month, the council approved the Mills Act Program, which provides property tax breaks for properties that are historic and can qualify. This program begins early next year.

MTA (Continued from page 1)

Beverly Hills High School. Expert sources have highlighted for The Courier gaping holes in the report’s analysis and the limitations of its investigations. One expert who spoke on the record but anonymously said: “That study carefully crafted its research, targets and opinions to reach a foregone conclusion–MTA must tunnel under Beverly High. They did not propose or study any options except the ones MTA told them to look at.” That view was echoed by the MTA’s own Vice Chairman, L.A. County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich, who compared the process to a rigged professional wrestling match. The fight so far has been conducted alone by the BHUSD Board of Education despite efforts by councilmembers John Mirisch and Lili Bosse to come to the aid of Beverly High. That may be changing, but how much it may change remains open. Brucker told The Courier that he again will propose another school/city liaison meeting to talk. He will couple that proposal with another attempt to learn the school board’s expert data, offering only to “share” the reports yet to be done by City-hired “experts.” The City has not proposed gathering data independently of the MTA, but will only review the MTA's data. That means sole reliance on MTA-generated information rather than conducting corroborative studies to test the completeness of that data. The City on multiple occasions rejected school board efforts to form a joint defense agreement or otherwise protect confidential data gathered by the board’s experts. The school board has consistently faced giving information in confidence to City officials then finding it in the possession of the MTA. Brucker remains non-committal about taking action to oppose the tunnel under Beverly High. He said: “Understanding the science from the Metro technical report and our own independent analysis will help us create a strategy that combines our mutual goal and objective of opposing the tunneling under the high school,” Brucker

said. “I look forward to our independent analysis review and having a productive dialogue with the district on our legal options.” The City Council is on record “opposing” the tunnel, but has yet to take any action. “Actions speak louder than words, and so far all we have is talk,” said one frustrated councilmember. Brucker said the City would share all of the data and analysis compiled from the their experts who were hired to do an independent analysis of the MTA geo-seismic report released on Oct. 19. Brucker said the analysis and review “should be done sometime within the next month.” He gave no details whether that data would be confidential or otherwise protected. He also gave no indication whether he would share that information with the MTA. The school board remains wary. Board President Lisa Korbatov pointed out that the school board has spent months asking for the City’s help only to be told the board was “pursuing the wrong strategy,” meaning open opposition to the MTA. With that history in mind, Korbatov said this may not be the time to work together but left the door open. “We cannot discuss our legal plans or strategies with anyone, including the City, without potentially compromising the attorney-client and attorney work product privileges,” Korbatov said. “We would be happy to review the data collected by the City’s experts and anything else that will help us with our stated goal of protecting Beverly Hills High School. We would certainly be open to consider talking to the City if its position (that the district is taking the wrong approach) has changed.” A Beverly Hills citizen’s commission thoroughly studied the subway proposal in 2006 and approved a route under Wilshire Boulevard to Santa Monica Boulevard. The route now proposed by the MTA is a “bait and switch” according to one member of that commission. “We would never have supported the subway if we had know they were going to use the route [under Beverly High],” she said.

Mike Stoller, the Grammy-winning composer and half of the legendary songwriting team of Leiber and Stoller, will be honored with Chapman University’s 30th annual American Celebration Lifetime Achievement in the Arts Award at a black-tie gala from 6-11:30 p.m. tomorrow at Chapman Auditorium in Chapman University’s Memorial Hall. This annual benefit for the Chapman Scholarship Fund kicks off with a champagne reception for sponsors at 6 p.m., followed by a fully-costumed and choreographed Broadwaystyle show performed by students from Chapman’s College of the Performing Arts at 7 p.m. dinner at 8 p.m., and dancing at 9:45 p.m. During a 61-year partnership, Leiber and Stoller created classics in a variety of genres including rhythm and blues, pop, country, jazz, cabaret, and—especially—rock and roll. It’s impossible to think of Elvis Presley without thinking of Hound Dog, Loving You or Jailhouse Rock— all creations of theirs. They wrote and produced all of The Coasters’

hits, including Searchin’, Young Blood, Yakety Yak, Charlie Brown, Along Came Jones, Poison Ivy and Little Egypt. Stoller and Jerry Leiber began their partnership in 1950 at age 17 when they discovered a mutual passion for boogie woogie and the blues. By the time they were 20, the team had seen their earliest songs recorded by such blues artists as Mike Stoller Jimmy Witherspoon, Little Esther, Amos Milburn, Charles Brown, Little Willie Littlefield, Bull Moose Jackson, Linda Hopkins, Ray Charles, and Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton. movie theaters within the southeast, Mirisch suggested creating an arts and theater district. But the task force has not decided on any one idea. “We’re trying to determine what would be appropriate for us and what we can do to build on what would be appropriate for this area,” Mirisch said. Margo said he got involved with the task force because he thought it would be a good idea to participate in something that affected his part of Beverly Hills. “It’s underdeveloped,” he said. “It doesn’t attract the attention the rest of the City does. I (think) there needs to be more of a balance (between the southeast, southwest and the golden triangle) and some attention given to that area of town. I think Beverly Hills should be

balanced all around. I don’t think we should have a part of Beverly Hills that feels like it’s a different city.” The task force has met twice thus far and intends to meet once a month. Mirisch said residents are on the task force to ensure their peers have a voice and there will be minimum impacts to the community. Thus far, however, nothing has really been decided. “It’s a work in progress” Mirisch said. “I think everyone on the task force recognizes something needed to be done. Fortunately, upgrading the southeast has become one of the council priorities. “I’m pleased that after pushing for this it has now been included in the council’s priorities and hope we’ll be able to do something, do some action and get some funding to take concrete steps.”

The boat had been fully provisioned, but with the adventure just days from starting, he still hadn’t figured what to do about the baby’s diapers. “Conventional cloth ones were out of the question because they require too much water to wash. Fresh water aboard had to be conserved for cooking and drinking, and a diaper washed in salt water was unsafe for a newborn,” he recalls. Then, while in a doctor’s office, he had his eureka moment when he spotted a roll of surgical dressing. Thus, “the world’s first disposable diaper was born,” he chuckles. While he never thought to seek a patent for its design, he would not let that mistake happen again. Over the ensuing decades, the name of Stanley A. Dashew would grace more than a dozen patents and the companies he owned would be responsible for several dozen more. Perhaps his best known invention was the credit-card-imprinting machine that facilitated the rapid growth of the industry in the ’60s. The products of his imagination would be used in such diverse industries

the Parkinson’s Disease-stricken owner of The Hollywood Reporter publishing em Parkinson Disease-stricken owner of The Hollywood Reporter empire through her Tichi Wilkerson Kassel Parkinson’s Foundation. The story goes back to 2002 and beyond. Tichi Wilkerson, the owner of The Hollywood Reporter, helped launch and build dozens of careers in the entertainment industry. A quiet, self-effacing woman, she led a life of determination and ambition. She helped found the famous Women in Film organization. The state of California recognized her as one of the leading Latinas of California with her own memorial exhibit in Sacramento dedicated three years ago by Maria Shriver. She had the affection and respect of the entire entertainment industry. She also passionately supported the men and women in blue. In that, she was joined by her husband since 1983, Arthur Kassel. Kassel began his career as a photographer with the New York City Police Department, earning photo credits for the “French Connection” heroin arrests. According to documents reviewed by The Courier, Kassel later graduated from both the Orange County Sheriff’s Academy and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Academy. Later, he became a sworn peace officer with the State of California Mental Health Police and served for over 20 years. As a special assistant to the administra- Family members of fallen LAPD SWAT Officer Randal Simmons stand with Arthur M. tions of four governors of California, he recruited dozens of celebrities to assist in Kassel (left) and LAPD Commander Mike Albaniz and Officer Peter Repovich, a director of the Los Angeles Police Protective League. erasing at least part of the stigma of mental disease. Tichi and Arthur shared their commitment to law enforcement. They were honored in 1999 with the Jack Webb award of the L.A. Police Museum. Tragedy had struck earlier when in 1988 she was diagnosed with the incurable Parkinson’s Disease that later claimed her life. To fight back, she and Arthur formed the Tichi Wilkerson Kassel Parkinson’s Foundation in 2002 to help raise money for Sharon Stone medical research. served as live Among those who stepped forward was international superstar Julio Iglesias. auctioneer during the Arthur, an accomplished impresario and chair of many fundraising dinners 2010 Eagle & here, in Washington DC, New York and elsewhere, was in the process of organizBadge and ing a spectacular benefit for the Tichi Foundation. Her efforts as founder of Women In Film continue to fund projects, scholarships, and create jobs for women in the entertainment industry. Developing Parkinson’s disease left her immobile but never impeded her philanthropic work, only widened the scope of objectives. While he and Tichi were organizing their Parkinson’s foundation, Arthur also helped found the Eagle & Badge Foundation of the Los Angeles Police Protective League. Until then, no foundation was dedicated to supporting the children and families of LAPD officers. “Arthur was going to do a fundraiser and they (Eagle & Badge) asked for help,” said Eagle & Badge Board Member David Lafaille. The net result was an agreement by the Tichi Foundation to allow the Eagle & Badge Foundation to join in her benefit and then split the proceeds. The two groups shared the expenses 50/50 and split the proceeds the same way a practice blessed by both boards and continued to this day. As reported on page 3 of the October 2002, Thin Blue Line, the official publication of the Los Angeles Police Protective League, “The Eagle & Badge Foundation, recently founded to provide scholarships and financial support for police officers and their children and to fund special needs of the community they serve, has made a commitment to support other major medical and philanthropic organizations that benefit the community at large. This partnership with the Tichi Wilkerson Kassel Parkinson’s Foundation, establish to fund research and special needs such as equipment for those afflicted with Parkinson's, seemed a perfect opportunity to achieve the E&B Foundation.” Tichi and Arthur recruited headliner Iglesias who performed without charge, Chuck Norris, Sharon Stone, Muhammad Ali, Lee Iacocca, soon-to-be-governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, then-Gov. Gray Davis, Vijay Amritraj, and a host of corporate backers and sponsors including LA Clippers owner Donald T. Sterling. The net result was a sold-out event at the Century Plaza and hundreds of thousands of dollars for each charity. Without tapping Tichi’s and Arthur’s Hollywood contracts, the Eagle & Badge would never have raised that kind of money. The dinner has been largely sold out ever year since, with Kassel filling the program with Hollywood headliners and political leaders each time and raising most of the money. “Two of the great causes Arthur is dedicated to are law enforcement and Parkinson’s,” said former Gov. Gray Davis, honorary dinner chair of the gala. During the first few years of the foundations’ joint efforts, Arthur helped jumpstart the organization’s fundraising momentum. “Over a period of time he has trained (Eagle & Badge) so that they now assist in the fundraising planning, table selling and so forth,” Lafaille added. Tichi finally succumbed to the disease in March 2004. Her husband’s dedication to the memory of his late wife dominates Arthur Kassel’s life. “One of the most remarkable lessons I learned from Tichi was giving a voice to the voiceless, her life’s work was dedicated to creating opportunities for minorities, helping them reach places they wouldn’t otherwise reach,” said Kassel while recalling the philanthropic efforts of his “one and only wife and mentor.” “She opened my eyes to a great many injustices and showed me how to effect change,” he recalled.? The Tichi Wilkerson Kassel Foundation still continues to lend its high priority influence to help Eagle & Badge events. In 2009, the duo held another gala “In the Line of Duty,” attended by such celebrities as Sharon Stone, Bill Maher and Billy Bush. This year’s gala featured the Los Angeles Lakers.

HORACE MANN GARDENS—Willa Ziegenfuss and Zela Al-Asadi paint a raised bed wall in the Horace Mann Garden. Since the school designated the garden last year, parent Martina Zeigenfuss has spearheaded the effort to bring it to life. She said they are still in the planning stages but hope to plant vegetables and herbs soon.

“That’s going to be on the topic chart. The JPA will be multiple millions of dollars. I’m hoping it could be as robust as possible for our citizens have derived tremendous benefit from this JPA facilities’ use agreement.” Brucker also said he hopes to discuss how to make the negotiations more streamline and productive. “It is difficult negotiating a multi-million dollar contract in public. I want to see if the district is interested in taking these negotiations into a private setting,” Brucker said. Board of Education Vice President Brian Goldberg said he hopes the negotiation teams will get a number they can take back to their respective groups. “We’re looking at our first interim budget at the November board meeting and it would be helpful to plug that hole in our annual budget,” Goldberg said. “My hope is to at least have a range or a number by the end of that two-hour meeting.” Open to the public, the Nov. 8 meeting starts at 3 p.m. in a conference room on the fourth floor of City Hall.

its 73 runnings. “I’m living a dream and having the time of my life,” said the Winnipeg-born, Toronto-raised Canadian, who has often been referred to as the “Danica Patrick of horse racing.” And why not? Besides her “day job” which finds her riding three to five mounts on the Santa Anita program, she has her own jewelry line specifically designed for her by almost-namesake but non-related pal Caldwell Sutherland of Bel-Air. In addition, she is an aspiring actress and has a continuing role in the upcoming HBO series Luck starring Dustin Hoffman and Nick Nolte. What is an average Sutherland day? It begins with her arising at 5 o’clock each morning, running five miles (that takes about 45 minutes), going to the track to work out several horses, having breakfast and then hitting the gym for another workout—all before she’s ready to go in the afternoon. She first began riding at age 5 from ponies and then hunter-jumpers and dressage. In high school she took up field hockey, downhill skiing

November 4, 2011 | Page 17 and ice hockey but her interest in riding resurfaced while at York University when she began exercising thoroughbreds. After Sutherland expressed a desire to become a jockey, her friends scoffed at the idea “If you have the will, good hands and natural athleticism, it’s just a matter of refining your technique,” she says. She eventually ended up becoming one of Canada’s leading jockeys and won two of that country’s prestigious Sovereign Awards. Sutherland has now moved her tack full time to the California circuit (Santa Anita, Del Mar and Hollywood Park). Not only does this mean a step-up in competition, but keeps her close to her Hollywood film and modeling opportunities. “I’m highly competitive and have played sports all my life,” she exclaims. “The important thing is to enjoy every day and stay healthy.” For somebody who has been given a fashion spread in Vogue and been named among People magazine’s “100 most beautiful personalities,” Chantal Sutherland will now be carrying the torch for all women in sports this weekend in Louisville. Riders up!

Milken Student Helps Inner City Students Through Music By Krystal Leach de Amante Milken Community High School senior Ariana “Storm” Ascher is taking on a commendable endeavor. The 17-year-old former Beverly Hills resident has designed a non-profit organization called HeartBass, that aims to help inner city minority students transcend negative emotions through creative, artistic expression. “I’m sure most kids have a lot of emotions that they aren’t able to express all the time,” Storm said. “I believe dance is a way to do that.” The ambitious honor student already has a full academic schedule of her own to maintain, as she is currently enrolled in six intensive advanced placement classes. However, her busy academic life has not impeded her desire to fulfill a longtime dream of helping other young people tap into their own,

hidden talents. Starting This month, Storm will commence teaching hip-hop dance for two hours, twice a week at the Los Angeles Leadership Academy. The classes will be offered to academy middle school students and are scheduled to take place during after school hours on campus. Storm’s belief is that HeartBass will ultimately help fill an unfortunate lack of artistic based programs at school’s that are currently unable to offer students similarly creative outlets. In addition, she strongly feels her volunteer work will also provide inner-city students with a fun and safe bi-weekly commitment. “I want the students to commit to something that is fun, creative and expressive,” she concluded.

JWCI COSTUME PARTY–In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, The John Wayne Cancer Institute (JWCI) held its annual “Turning the Pumpkin Pink” costume party at Hotel Angeleno. Early detection is key in the fight against breast cancer, and funds raised by the party go toward JWCI’s “Early Detection” Breast Cancer Research. “We are working hard to find new ways of detecting and treating breast cancer,” said Lou Lazatin, president/CEO of JWCI and St. John’s Health Center. “With nearly 200,000 women diagnosed every year in the U.S., breast cancer is a disease we can’t ignore.” Event co-chairs Tim Dunn (left) and Debbie Menin are pictured at the dinner which featured a silent auction along with performances by U2 tribute band L.A.vation, vocalists Patrick Barnitt and Jeanine Del Carlo, and pianist Howlett Smith.

Held at the Four Seasons, we entered the beautifully decorated room (by Peterson Event Lighting and Sonny Alexander Florist) for dinner, entertainment (a cabaret show and Mardi Gras dancers)…and dancing to the band “The Grove” Many thanks to her children …Howard Gussman and daughters Shelby and Shane; Cheryl Gussman with partner John Bowes and son Joshua Kaupp (Cheryl did all the party planning, invitations and favors); Michele Gussman Crandell with children Brandon, Carly, Mollie and Chloe; David and Deena; and Lisa Gussman Zairi with husband David and children Karen and Asaf. Also enjoying the fun were Madeline’s sisters, Sharon, Esther, and Helen, many nieces and nephews, and, of course, many friends and Madeline’s significant other Bob Vernon. Madeline’s late husband, Marvin, who helped make all this possible, was greatly missed.

Astrology

By Holiday Mathis TODAY’S BIRTHDAY (Nov. 4). Engage life with full participation. This month you’ll change one physical habit–perhaps dietary–kicking off a wave of good fortune. Commitment to positive thinking will jump-start your career in a different and improved direction at the start of 2012. A relationship will be healed in June. Libra and Leo people adore you. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). You’ll be excited about teaching others what you know. You’ll move quickly and say much. Your “students” will absorb it, too, because you’re all on the same page. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). You’ll get serious about a goal. This is the part where the rubber meets the road. You realize that you are in a competition, and you have the instinct to get ahead. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). You don’t know whether a person has the integrity to follow through on what he or she promised, and that is disconcerting. A clear communication channel will give you the best shot. Also, make a backup plan. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). You’re not looking for a quick fix or a comforting cliche. You want to live a great life, and that means accepting the complexities and moving forward anyway. Your faults may also be your best assets in the fight. PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar. 20). You have something in common with the Japanese goddess Okame. When the sun went into hiding and the world went dark, it was Okame’s wild dance that brought back the light. Your exuberance will save the day. ARIES (Mar. 21-Apr. 19). You don’t want to exhaust yourself chasing down every small lead that comes your way. You also don’t want to wait around for the big ship that may or may not come in. You’ll focus on the juiciest, most appealing job you see. TAURUS (Apr. 20-May 20). If you are too aware of what a person can or can’t do for you, it will be challenging to loosen up and have fun. Better to assume that your contacts can’t do anything for you and think instead about what you might do for them. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). You enter into friendship cautiously. You may even be feeling shy. But once the ice is cracked, you’ll become gregarious, sharing and interacting all day long. CANCER (June 22-July 22). You may feel like you are recovering from hurt feelings, as well you are. You may also be ignoring a certain person until you have fully recovered. You’ll come back to this person when you’re ready to talk unemotionally. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). You’ll direct social happenings, and want to prevent anyone from feeling uncomfortable or slighted. You’ll investigate matters of protocol and adopt the best method for your situation. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). You will look for a pattern in events so as not to be surprised at what is to come. Mostly, you will be able to accurately predict the next wave. Mostly... LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). You feel older than all the people around you, or at least a lot more mature. You’ll stand back and watch them squabble like children on a playground. You may even have to blow a proverbial whistle to stop the ruckus.

Frances Allen Desert Roundup

GALEN GALA–Philanthropist Helene Galen (left) hosted a party in her home and welcomes actress Rhonda Fleming Carlson, a BHHS alumna, and her husband Darol W. Carlson. They are shown with Jamie Kabler (right), co-creator of the Hollywood Cookie Diet.

We Desert rats love to party and will often go to great lengths for what is bound to be a magical evening. So it was no surprise that some of the valley’s biggest names made the trek–three in their own private jets–from the Desert to the Century Woods home of Helene Galen for one of the most impeccably-hosted parties of the newly-arrived fall season, all choreographed by Jamie Kabler who, before co-creating the Hollywood Cookie Diet, was orchestrating state dinners for the White House. But, I stand corrected. Calling any Galen residence a “home” is like calling the Sistine Chapel just another church. A dedicated patron of the arts, whether visual or performance, Galen has filled her Century Woods manse with countless pieces of modern art of such excellent quality and, occasionally whimsy, that any large-city museum curator would drool at the prospect of having them grace the walls of his museum. And yes, if the Galen name sounds familiar, it should. Not only did Helene and her late husband put up more than $50 million to underwrite Galen Center on the USC campus, she has made an exemplary reputation as a patron of both the visual and theatrical arts in the Coachella Valley, with the soon-to-be-built Palm Spring Art Museum’s Palm Desert annex named in recognition of her philanthropy. Not bad for a true London cockney, (someone born in that city’s East End within the sound of the Bow Bells), who, as a Los Angeles-based fashion executive, invigorated the underworld of feminine fashion. Among the notable coterie of guests enjoying this six-figure event–we have it on good authority the basin-sized tub of caviar, alone, cost $10,000 –were actress Julie Newmar, still “Cat Women” svelte; super agent Jeffery Lane; beautiful London socialite and Jamie’s daughter, Liz Kabler; Wallis Annenberg, the driving force behind the $60 million renovation of Sunnylands in Rancho Mirage. Property mavens, Alan and Susan Casden; legendary actress Rhonda Fleming; celebrity photographer, Michael Childers, who came with actress Stefanie Powers; Lita Heller, daughter of movie mogul Jack Warner; Desert powerhouse Harold Matzner with constant companion, Buster, who waited patiently in his limo (Don’t all dogs have their own limo? He has a jet, too.); art patron, Donna McMillan; Dorothy and Harold Meyerman; entertainer Charo, the poster girl for type ‘A’ personalities; and AIDS Assistance Program CEO Mark Anton with Scott Histed. It was an evening of art meeting the artisans, a true Helene Galen and Jamie Kabler production. How do I know? It had “class” written all over it.

CONNIE MARTINSON Talks Books When is a book not a book? When it is one of the most beautiful, funny, artistic with the artist’s comments on the subject and all the subjects of the paintings and sculpture are one and the same person, that being Joan Quinn, one of Beverly Hills’ outstanding personalities. It is the catalogue for Mysterious Objects: Portraits of Joan Quinn which was exhibited at the main art gallery at Santa Ana College for two months. (I hope someone will bring it home to Beverly Hills.) Forget investing in stocks, Joan and her husband, Jack, have invested in artists who painted Joan’s portrait. It is also a history of how she aged since the catalogue covers 35 years. It is a work of love by Amanda Quinn Olivar, who is the curator, and includes her reminiscences of growing up in a world of Helmut Newton, Andy Warhol, Ed Ruscha, David Hockney, Don Bachardy, just to name a few who also painted her mother. She does dedicate the book to her father Jack Quinn, who has always been an inspiration. The book revels in the artist’s comments as well as the works , such as Ted Allan’s photograph from the 1960s of a gelatin silver print that is breathtaking. Charles Arnoldi who writes about doing Joan in sticks with blue hair: “She always has her finger on the pulse of artistic momentum and it has been an honor to be her friend all these years.” I should mention the catalogue is alphabetical. Laddie John Dill has a sculpture in tempered glass, wood, etc. which claims to capture her hair coloring. He also remembers her from 40 years ago being in Cuba where she introduced him to Castro. They later had dinner and drinks with him in 1978. Dennis Dutzi’s acrylic on canvas in 1999 is the Joan Quinn most like today. In 1991 David Hockney captured her in Polaroid and Xerox collage with a Haiku poem which he signed Dr. David Hockney. In 1996 Robert Mapplethorpe saw her as “Breakfast at Tiffany.” A swinger wearing a cross. For Joan, today, Ed Moses has done a silkscreen acrylic for her birthday in 2010, recalling that her father, Agajanian ran Ascot Park race track. There is a Zandra Rhodes mixed media on watercolor paper, 2011, talking about Joan bouncing into her life and that when Joan believes in someone or something, her enthusiasm and follow-through know no bounds, which is how I found myself doing an interview with Zandra on her book–thank you Joan. From the Publisher CLIF SMITH

ANSWERING TO THE PEOPLE November will be an interesting month. For Beverly Hills, it will be a month that will tell our citizens the extent to which our elected City Council pays any attention to their needs and wishes. But first off, we have an election next Tuesday for the Board of Education of the Beverly Hills Unified School District. The Courier commends and congratulates the board majority led by President Lisa Korbatov as it implements one correction after another first identified by Board Vice President Brian Goldberg and former President Steven Fenton when they served in the minority on the board. Two years ago they became the majority. Those three, joined frequently by member Jake Manaster, took on the “old guard” and faced directly the embezzlement, sweetheart deals, failures both financial and academic, shenanigans, and the constant turnover of empty suits that have bled our once-proud school district. In the process, have they ever ruffled feathers. There is nothing worse than challenging someone and proving them wrong. Public schools can intimidate parents into silence. Parents justifiably fear retaliation against their children from teachers and administrators who hold the power of the grading pencil. They can make or withhold or manipulate recommendations for college. A generally-held myth is that any public criticism of public schools tells college admissions staff that “there is something wrong here which will hurt my child’s chances of acceptance.” Got news for you–they already know. There are no secrets kept from college admissions staffs, which is why the courage of the current school board majority is so commendable. They know the truth and took on reluctant parents and the old guard in order to do the right thing. They fought the resistance and are winning. Brian Goldberg is a champion in this cause. He must be reelected. Noah Margo has pledged to support him and that is why he is our second endorsement. If the voters select Lewis Hall, we believe he would credibly and competently serve, but we have too little information about him to endorse him. The other choice is to vote for Andy Licht who presumably, as he has said, will not serve thus allowing the new board majority to appoint a replacement until the next election. We just cannot see Frances Bilak on the school board given her conduct during the election. Continuing with a strong school board majority will ensure that the progress made with so much effort does not stop. We have a first class superintendent now who has a proven track record of running the #1 district in the state. Our finances are properly administered. The people selected by the old guard are now being prosecuted. School lunches are now properly administered and the $330 million Measure E bond funds are in good hands. The next matter is how to deal with the MTA. It is vital to return a strong school board in order to prevent harm to Beverly High. We need a stalwart school board while we wait to see if the City Council majority will actually take action to protect the school. The responsibility belongs to the school board, but the council majority up to now has not acted. While it would help immensely to find our City Council on the side of the schools, the residents and the City–not the MTA–the school board will fight the fight regardless. Hurrah for them. We also will see whether the Roxbury Park version of Staples Center will continue despite widespread citizen opposition. Do we really need a huge public facility with a 10,000-square foot banquet hall, midnight basketball and no parking? Right now, it’s going to be built unless something really changes. I)t is coming. So, just who runs Beverly Hills? The people or a tiny minority? Will our elected officials follow the will of the people or their own will which they never disclose until it is too late? It should all be revealed this month.

Regarding the Nov. 8 school board election, why has there been so little discussion of why Beverly Hills parents have to spend so much money hiring tutors to teach their children? During a recent KBEV broadcast of a Q&A session with the school board candidates, one parent exclaimed she was “paying tutors up the wazoo!” From my own observations, a shockingly high number of BHUSD students have tutors, even in kindergarten. Why? From what I hear on the “parents grapevine,” it’s because our children are not being taught the necessary academic material or not taught it well enough, so concerned parents hire tutors. Besides being expensive for parents, this need for tutors indicates something is wrong with the district’s administration, teaching and curriculum. One way to uncover what is wrong is for a simple (and anonymous) survey to be sent to every BHUSD parent asking them about their use of tutors for their children. The survey will help inform school administrators about teaching quality and curriculum weaknesses. And it will clarify who is teaching our children and what. I further believe such a survey will reveal that the curriculum in B.H. schools is weak and often confusing. (Has the school board tried to understand the current third grade math curriculum?) Too many Beverly Hills parents are falsely comforted by the district’s high end API scores. BHUSD’s 2010 average API score was 891 out of a possible 1,000. API scores, however, are not always an accurate gauge of a school’s quality. API scores don’t, for example, account for factors such as wealth. In wealthy areas like Beverly Hills, all parents speak English and so can communicate easily with teachers and can read their children’s school work. Our parents are focused on education and have the time to help their children, such as supervising their homework. Most importantly, Beverly Hills parents can afford to hire tutors. Compare these circumstances to a less-wealthy immigrant area, where the parents don’t speak English, don’t understand the school system, are working two or three jobs so cannot help with their child?s homework and cannot afford to hire tutors. If Beverly Hills parents were to stop hiring tutors or spending so many hours “supervising” their children’s homework, Beverly Hills schools’ API scores would collapse. Now is the time for parents to learn why the use of tutors is so rife in the district. Until that happens, local parents will be paying dearly for tutors and our children won’t be receiving the education they deserve to get–at their school. Scott McConnell

Rabbi Jacob Pressman ALL THE WORLD’S A STAGE Last week I celebrated my 92nd birthday, and somehow more attention was paid to it than when I was only 91. My wife rallied my family and some came from out of town. There was something doing almost every day, including a group of members of the Temple Beth Am staff. By midweek I was over-cookied, overfed and overwhelmed. A heap of birthday greeting cards came in, and some wonderful presents to eat, wear and put into my wallet. Nobody was more surprised than I to reach 92. I confess that at 50 I was positive I would never reach 65 because of my strenuous schedule. At 65 I retired (ho, ho, ho!) and have remained active ever since, usually filling 12-hour workdays. I have not taken a vacation for years now and am spending too many hours sitting at the computer. So now I simply thank God every day and wonder what He has in store for my future. In high school I was in the Shakespeare club under the masterful direction of George Montgomery. He gave me leads in Taming Of The Shrew and Julius Caesar. He gave me more. He drove me to do more than my very best. One assignment was to memorize Jaques’ famous soliloquy in the play: As You Like It. Believe it or not, this birthday brought it back to mind after 75 years, and I have written it as I remember it on this advanced birthday. “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances, and one man in his lifetime plays many parts, his acts being seven ages. At first the infant, mewling and puking in his mother’s arms. And then the whining schoolboy, with his satchel and shining morning face, creeping like snail unwillingly to school. And then the lover, sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad made to his mistress’ eyebrow. Then a soldier, full of strange oaths, and bearded like the pard; jealous in honor, sudden and quick in quarrel, seeking the bubble reputation even in the cannon’s mouth. And then the justice, in fair round belly with good capon lined, with eyes severe and beard of formal cut, full of wise saws and modern instances; and so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts into the lean and slippered pantaloon, with spectacles on nose and pouch on side, his youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide for his shrunk shank; and his big manly voice, turning again toward childish treble, pipes and whistles in his sound. Last scene of all, that ends this strange, eventful history, is second childishness, and mere oblivion, sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.” It made me wonder: is that what I have for which to look forward? tim’s checking account informaPOLICE BLOTTER tion, created fraudulent checks (Continued from page 11) and cashed them.
