Lieu, Kuehl Elected; L.A. County Voter Turnout Hits Record Low By Matt Lopez Voter turnout in Los Angeles sunk to an embarrassing low Tuesday, with only 25.2-percent of the more than 4 million registered voters in the county actually casting a ballot. In Beverly Hills, that number was slightly up, but not by much. Only 29-percent of Beverly Hills registered voters actually headed to the polls on Tuesday. Those who actually took the

City Council Approves Mills Act For Joe E. tion recommending approval of the Mills Act Contract for the property at their meeting Sept. 30. “With the current spike in property values it is very important for property owners in traditional neighborhoods to have a realistic option to renovate traditional homes rather than redevelop, if they so wish,” said William Crouch, Urban Planner. “The City Council has acted with great foresight in providing a pilot Mills Act Program for owners The owners, William and Jodie Fay, requested landmark status and then sought the (see ‘JOE E. L.A. Fire Department Investigating Response Time To Franklin Canyon Hiker’s Death By Matt Lopez The man who tried unsuccessfully to save the life of an elderly fallen hiker in Franklin Canyon late last month has lodged a complaint with the L.A. City Fire Department regarding what he believes was an unsatisfactory response time to the tragic accident. On Oct. 18, 72-year-old Ralph Ehrenpreis fell while hiking in Franklin Canyon. Kris Herzog, a Beverly Hills celebrity bodyguard, was close by and heard Ehrenpreis’ wife screaming for help. After alerting OnStar of the
emergency Herzog, a trained EMT, ran down and performed mouth-to-mouth on a bloody Ehrenpreis, but to no avail. Because of various celebrity paparazzi run-ins he’s had in the past, Herzog keeps a dashboard camera lodged in his vehicle. The camera shows about 20 minutes elapsing from the time 911 is alerted to the time help shows up. Herzog lodged a complaint that was sent to the LAFD’s Professional Standards Division on Oct. 20. At that time, he was informed that an investigator would follow up
within the week. As of Thursday, Herzog said he did not hear from anyone with LAFD. “I have heard from no one from any division of the fire department, no one from the city of L.A., or the mayor’s office, or City Council,” Herzog said, who questioned the investigation “without my dash camera, my audiotapes, or interviewing other witnesses. Are they posturing to cover themselves?” Herzog said its unknown whether a quicker response (see ‘FRANKLIN CANYON’ page 22)

Chinese Investors Continue To Buy United States Real Estate By Laura Coleman This week at a private luncheon held at the InterContinental in Century City, the Shanghai-based Hurun Report confirmed what everyone has been speculating: “2014 is really a watershed year for Chinese investment in U.S.” As the over-inflated Chinese real estate market softens in concert with the country’s changing political environment, China’s rich are increasingly investing in countries with more stable governments. In August, Beverly Hills witnessed first-hand the
strength of the rising Asian consumer when China’s Wanda Group acquired the former Robinson’s-May site at 9900 Wilshire Blvd. Wanda plans to develop that gateway Beverly Hills property into the U.S. headquarters for its entertainment empire. “L.A. is the number one place to buy real estate in the U.S.,” said Rupert Hogewerf, chairman of the Hurun Report, the authority on high net-worth individuals. Joyce Rey And Stacy Gottula Team Up With Highest-Priced Listing in U.S.
An exterior view of the rear of the home
By Victoria Talbot The Coldwell Banker International Previews duo of Joyce Rey and Stacy Gottula have topped their own record for the most expensive listing in the United States, surpassing the last highest listing by millions of dollars. Palazzo di Amore, a Mediterranean mansion above Coldwater Canyon, boasts a 5,000-square foot master bedroom, a 15,000-square foot ballroom with a revolving dance floor, a private vineyard that produces 4-500 cases of wine each year and 35,000-square feet of living space on 25 acres in Beverly Hills. The residence is being offered for a record $195 million. Real estate mogul Jeff Greene owns the home, which was originally constructed by Mohamed Hadid. Greene has spent millions of dollars to complete the project, adding a separate entertainment pavilion of 15,000-square feet. Since purchasing the home, his growing
family prefers to stay at a smaller residence in Malibu when visiting Los Angeles. The home was offered for lease earlier this year at $475,000 a month while the entertainment pavilion was completed. Palazzo di Amore is tucked inconspicuously behind a quarter-mile driveway, swathed in olive trees that wend past-cantilevered grapevines and a private security station. A tennis arena, elaborate swimming deck and elongated reflecting pool are framed in a lush green lawn. The Mediterranean landscaping evokes a sense of antiquity, lending gravitas to a property that is designed for the ultimate in luxury and entertaining. The lavish features and amenities leave nothing to be desired. This is only the most recent recordbreaking event for Rey and Gottula. In 2010 the two had the nation’s highest-priced sale with “Le Belvédère” for $72 million; in 2013 they set the
record for the highest-priced residential property in Beverly Hills with “Le Palais,” listed at $58 million. The Manor in Holmby Hills, formerly owned by Candy and Aaron Spelling, is being offered off-market at $150 million. Coldwell Banker also listed a home earlier this year in Hillsboro Beach, Florida at $139 million. The Versaillesinspired property on Millionaire Row known as Le Palais Royal, tops the for-
mer Beverly Hills home of William Randolph Hearst offered at $135 million. Hadid told The Courier, he is “super proud” of the home because “I built it for the owners and their needs. If they were satisfied, I am satisfied. With 25 acres, an 8-acre vineyard, the theatre and everything else, you just can’t build a house like that today.” AERIAL VIEW —(Left to right) The entertainment pavillion pool area, vineyard, reflecting pool main house and guest house (back) and to the rear left, the tennis pavillion for $195 million.

FRESH LOOK AT WORLD OF HIP HOP—How does a petite, blonde, New York City socialite go from being head of the women’s division of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), to publishing one of the first magazines to cover the world of hip hop music. That’s the story of Gloria Goldwater’s new book SuperFly, My Untold Story Of Hip Hop. The outgoing Goldwater always secretly loved the passion, storytelling and beat of hip hop music. “All I know is I would get up and turn on the radio, hear the music and start dancing all over the place,” says Goldwater. With help from her first husband, John Goldwater, creator of Archie Comics, who had national and international distribution for his magazines, she launched the first issue of SuperFly in February 1991, and Goldwater soon found herself interviewing such hip hop stars as Big Daddy Kane, Masta Ace, Queen Latifah and YoYo. Cancer Research, Awareness Run for Her is celebrating “10 years of teal” at this Sunday’s upcoming 5K Run and Friendship Walk to support ovarian cancer research and awareness. Motivated by her mother’s battle with cancer, Kelli Sargent started Run for Her in 2004, initially creating a marketing and operations plan for an ovarian cancer 5k run/walk as her master’s degree thesis and then later partnering with Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles to create the inaugural event in 2005. Today, it is among the largest ovarian cancer run/walks in the nation with more than 5,000 participants and Sleepwalkers in 2013. “It’s pretty surreal that in 10 years we are looking at a $1 million goal and have raised almost $7 million to date,” Sargent told The Courier.
Funds raised go toward the CedarsSinai Women’s Cancer Program at the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute. Ovarian cancer is the fifth-leading cause of cancer deaths among women, mainly because women aren’t aware of the common symptoms, including consistent bloating, pelvic pain and frequent urination. Early diagnosis saves lives—as does raising awareness and essential research funds. For more information about the Women’s Cancer Research Institute or Run For Her, call 310-423-5800 or visit www.runforher.com. The event takes place at Pan Pacific Park - 7600 Beverly Blvd. Registration begins at 7 a.m. with opening ceremonies at 8:30 a.m.

BH Oncologist Forms Nonprofit To Eradicate Cervical Cancer Worldwide In a 100-square-foot office on North Camden at the corner of Santa Monica there is a special team working to save the lives of women in developing countries through cervical cancer screenings and treatments. GETTING READY TO RUN—Leading up to the Sunday’s 5K Run and Friendship Walk a CureCervicalCancer.org (CCC) is a pilates event was held at The Grove with support from with Pilates Platinum and BurnThis. 501c3 non-profit organization founded in October 2013 with the mission statement: “Dedicated to the early detection, treatment and cure of cervical cancer around the globe for the women who need it most.” Founder/Executive Director Dr. Patricia Gordon, MD, a Beverly Hills radiation oncologist who recently left a thriving practice to lead the group full time, believes that “with our earnest work and attention we can dramatically reduce the number of women around the world who suffer from this devastating disease.” CCC is devoted to saving women’s lives by creating sustainable clinics in developing countries where cervical cancer is the leading cause of cancer death for women of reproductive age. Local healthcare providers receive training in a technique called “See and Treat,” in which women undergo a screening procedure where vinegar is applied to
the cervix. Pre-cancerous changes on the cervix are identified and the women are immediately counselled and offered a procedure called cryotherapy, where these bad cells are frozen off. The procedure has a 90-percent cure rate at reversing these pre-cancerous changes, and blocking the progression to cervical cancer. Since March 2013 when the group made its first international trip, CureCervicalCancer.org has succeeded in founding 25 sustainable clinics in five different countries on three continents. Founding Boardmember and the group’s medical director, Gynecologic Oncologist Dr Jennifer Lang, MD, explains they have developed a novel model for training and opening clinics called “Clinic in a Suitcase.” Essentially, everything needed to provide the “See and Treat” procedure can fit into a rolling suitcase that can literally be taken anywhere. “As long as we have local healthcare personnel open to learning this technique there is no limit to where we could take this model and the number of women’s lives we could positively effect,” states Dr Lang.
CHLA Researchers: Obese Youths With Leukemia Have Worse Outcomes Obese youths with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) are known to have worse outcomes than their lean counterparts. To find out why, investigators at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) studied patients who were obese at the time of their diagnosis with ALL to determine if body mass index (BMI) impacted response to initial chemotherapy. This response to initial chemotherapy (or induction therapy) is measured by the absence of leukemia cells in the bone marrow. Called minimal residual disease (MRD), in which residual leukemia cells cannot be seen under microscope but can be detected by more sensitive methods, it is among the strongest predictors of long-term survival and disease recurrence. As reported in the journal Blood,
following induction chemotherapy, obese patients were more than twice as likely to have minimal residual disease, than non-obese patients. “Induction chemotherapy provides a patient’s best chance for remission or a cure,” said principal investigator Dr. Steven Mittelman of CHLA’s Saban Research Institute. “Our findings indicate that a patient’s obesity negatively impacts the ability of chemotherapy to kill leukemia cells, reducing the odds of survival.” The study looked at 198 patients, diagnosed with ALL and between the ages of 1 and 21 years. Each patient’s BMI was converted to a percentile and classified according to CDC thresholds (see ‘LEUKEMIA,’ page 15)

ing the first month of treatment, these patients still showed similar outcomes to those who remained lean. “In addition to increasing a patient’s likelihood of having persistent disease following treatment, obesity appears to add a risk factor that changes the interaction between chemotherapy and residual leukemia cells,” said the institute's Dr. Hisham Abdel-Azim. Findings from the study offer new avenues for investigation that include modifying chemotherapy regimens for obese patients and working to change a patient’s weight status beginning at the time of diagnosis.

for overweight (85 to 94 percent) and obese (greater than 95 percent). Patients at less than 85 percent BMI were considered “lean”. About one-third of the patients were obese or overweight at the time of diagnosis. Investigators found that lean patients with minimal residual disease had similar outcomes to obese patients without evidence of residual disease. Obese patients with residual disease had the worst outcomes. Additionally, although nearly a quarter of the patients initially deemed “lean”” gained weight and become obese dur-
Metro Celebrates Pricey ‘Subway To The Sea’ At LACMA Today By Laura Coleman This morning at 9 a.m., civic leaders will gather at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art for the kick off construction on the Purple Line extension into Beverly Hills. Yet again, the L.A. Metropolitan Transportation Authority will celebrate a business deal that proposes spending at least $200 million more than it has to if it opts to follow up the Wilshire/La Cienega station with a segment that rolls underneath Beverly Hills High School and into JMB’s planned City Center in Century City at Constellation and Avenue of the Stars. The proposed $1 billion Purple Line segment to reach Constellation from La Cienega, (as opposed to the $800 million price tag to build on Santa Monica Boulevard), may also face unknown additional costs as two tunnels wend underneath BHHS through unknown abandoned oil wells and fields of methane, according to BHUSD consultant Tim Buresh. No fewer than five studies have disproved Metro’s primary rationale that earthquake faults made it necessary to route the subway to Constellation, he said. Together, Beverly Hills Uni-

kickoff will be announced in the stadium before the game to rile up the crowd for the text-to-give competition. “Although one school will prevail, both schools get bragging rights to feeding thousands of people who are food insecure in L.A. County,” said Michael Flood, Food Bank president and CEO. ”One dollar feeds four people so one person can make a difference. We applaud the
schools for supporting those in need of our help. “The Food Bank’s distribution has increased 76 percent since 200, yet the need has not diminished,” Flood said. While it distributes 1.1 million pounds of food each week through more than 670 agencies (and more than 1,050 program and distribution sites), more than 1,000 agencies remain on a waiting list.
fied School District and the City of Beverly Hills have filed a National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) suit and a California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) suit (now in appeal) in order to get Metro to examine documentation showing that running the subway along Santa Monica Boulevard, as Metro originally intended, is a safe alternative. Metro has argued that running the Purple Line beneath the high school is the “safer” alternative to an original proposal that had the subway running along Santa Monica Boulevard. Today's ceremony is scheduled to include U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration top official Therese McMillan, as well Sen. Dianne Feinstein, Rep. Henry Waxman, Rep. Karen Bass, L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti, Metro representatives and other local officials. Mayor Lili Bosse and councilmembers John Mirisch and Willie Brien all confirmed they planned to attend. "We as a City have said we support the subway coming to La Cienega and coming to Beverly Hills; What we don't support is going under the high school," Bosse said. "It stops at La Cienega. They haven't ap-
proved the next route. They haven't gotten the funding. We're in lawsuits." Vice Mayor Julian Gold said this segment’s construction will likely serve as a test of how well the City and Metro work together. He said the City has been diligent in constructing ways to monitor and mitigate the impacts of the construction about to start on Wilshire Boulevard. Bosse touted an agreement the City reached with Metro that mitigates impacts from the utility phase and will continue to ensure that all phases of construction proceed as smoothly as possible for the community. “This is proof positive that Beverly Hills is supportive of the route going into Beverly Hills,” Board VP Brian Goldberg said about this morning’s ceremony. “The problem is the route planned beneath the high school.” "We should be glad they’re doing a project, but at the same time, it reminds us that there’s a major arrogance on the way they’re acting,” City Councilmember John Mirisch said. The three-phase extension project will eventually stop in Westwood.

We really had to talk to our employees, which is never an easy thing to do, and tell them we’re going to have to do some things together like furloughs, to help the City.” What, we asked, is the high point? The high point was totally unexpected said Kolin. It happened when Steve Gordon, president of Domino Realty, came into his office and began to tell Kolin how unhappy he was with the condition of the Beverly Gardens Park. “He was quite critical and ashamed. I have an internal calculator and began to add up all the improvements he was talking about. Then he said ‘I want you to say ‘yes’ to letting me raise the money…what a community!” That partnership is a high point for Kolin, who only has to gaze out at the Lily Pond to see how successful that has been. “One of the things in my resume I enjoyed thoroughly … to put those partnerships
together.” As for accomplishments, Kolin feels he is leaving the City significantly better than when he arrived. “The recession was not easy. Not every city is able to emerge as strong; the fiscal condition, reserves, revenues, improved government services, improved infrastructure.” Kolin named a long list of projects that the City has undertaken, including Roxbury Park, Public Works Warehouse, the Santa Monica Boulevard office building, water and reservoir infrastructure, buildings and renovations for parking, streamlining permits and planning, e-government and historic preservation – to name a few. Kolin is not that concerned with the deficit in unfunded mandates. “Most cities’ post employment benefits are greater than pensions. Kolin believes that with the increased contributions and a strengthening economy, over time, PERS is going to benefit. He sees that as lowering the burden for the City. Kolin started his career in L.A. County, working in the recreation and parks department, and continued in recreation and parks with the cities of Orange County for the next 15 years before moving to the city of Santa Clarita and to become deputy city manager. Following that, he served as city manager in Pittsburg (Contra Costa County) and Santa Rosa before coming to Beverly Hills in 2010. Kolin’s contract was set to be up for renewal in January. “Leading Beverly Hills has been the high point of my career,” Kolin said. “This is a city with outstanding employees, engaged and sophisticated residents and a dynamic business community. “Beverly Hills has the resources to meet every challenge with innovation and strength. It has been a privilege
to work alongside so many outstanding and caring people.” “We are very grateful to Jeff for his skilled leadership over the past five years,” said Beverly Hills Mayor Lili Bosse. “Beverly Hills is in excellent financial health and he has assembled a team of strong leaders and an outstanding staff who will carry on the Beverly Hills tradition of excellence. I wish both Jeff and Patty the very best in their new life.” Mayor Bosse said the City would soon commence a search for Kolin’s successor. “It has been an honor to serve as city manager.”

representatives at the mediation. “We feel the agreement brokered by the mediator was both reasonable and fair to all sides,” said Beverly Hills Mayor Lili Bosse. “We were very excited at the conclusion of the mediation that we had reached a framework for settlement and equally disappointed by its later rejection by the Metro Board.” BHUSD president Noah Margo, who also participated in the mediation session, said, “Although we have at times been unfairly portrayed in the press as unreasonable, we were willing to work with the
November 7, 2014 | Page 17 mediator to broker a solution that represented a true compromise. We continue to be committed to working out a solution that allows Metro to fulfill its goals, while protecting our school’s future.” “We have always preferred a negotiated solution to litigation,” Margo added. “The mediator, along with the representatives from Metro, FTA and DOJ did a good job listening and working things out. It is our hope that the Metro Board, which now includes three new members, will also come to the realization that a mediated settlement is in the interest of the entire region.”

S P O RT S Beverly Hills High Girls Tennis Team Wins In First Round Of CIF Playoffs By Matt Lopez Fresh off capturing an Ocean League title, the Beverly Hills High girls tennis team got off to a successful start this week in the CIF playoffs. Powered by a strong singles performance from Ocean League Individual Champion Martina Bocchi, BHHS beat West Ranch 11-7 in the CIF
Southern Section Division II first-round match Wednesday at Beverly High. Bocchi led the way by sweeping all three of her singles matches for the Normans. “(West Ranch) is a pretty good team, but we didn’t play up to our potential,” BHHS coach Mike Margolin said. BHHS’ doubles teams did
come through in a big way. Jackie Hasuer and Sabrina Saitta won two out of their three doubles sets. BHHS won four out of the nine doubles sets in the match. With such strength in its singles players, Margolin said just about breaking even in doubles play would be key for BHHS if it hopes to continue in
the playoffs. “That is pretty good, if we can do that every match we might be able to do some things,” Margolin said. BHHS gets a big test today in its second round match, packing up for a long road trip to take on Temecula Valley. “It’s going to be a lot tougher, it’s going to be tough
on the kids with the long road trip,” Margolin said. “But we’ve done it before, and we’ll go out there and try to get it done again.” Today’s match is at 2 p.m. at Temecula Valley High.

Beverly Hills Football Shut Out In Loss To Santa Monica By Matt Lopez Beverly Hills High’s football team hit the road for the final time this season last Friday, and came back home with a tough loss. The Normans were shut out in a 41-0 loss to host Santa Monica in an Ocean League match. Santa Monica, which is trying to hold off Lawndale for second place in the Ocean League, scored early and often in its rout of the Normans (1-8, 0-4). The Normans didn’t have as much trouble as they’ve had with turnovers in the past, but did lose possession once on a Joe Kolko fumble. Despite that, the Normans were simply unable to move the ball against a stingy Santa Monica defense that includes a few highly-rated blue-chip football prospects. Passing-wise, quarterback Jake Wolken was only able to manage 49 passing yards on 9of-17 passing.
Even in a rough season for the Normans in the win column, the running game has always been a bright spot throughout the season, but even that didn’t have much success Friday. Joe Kolko was only able to get 18 yards on 16 carries, good for just over 1 yard per carry. Rashard Ysaquirre ran the ball only once for five yards. Solomon Nwankwo caught four of Wolken’s passes for 29 yards. Mike Massie caught three for 18 yards. The Normans have one last shot to pick up their first Ocean League win in two years on Friday when they take on Culver City in a 7 p.m. season finale at Nickoll Field. Culver City won the Ocean League last year, but has struggled this year losing key players as transfers to other schools. In fact, the Centaurs finally won their first game of the season last Friday in a 3510 win over Hawthorne.
VOLLEYBALL—Pictured above: HaRim Lee digs down to hit the ball in the Beverly Hills High girls volleyball team’s 30 loss on Nov. 4 at Culver City. It was the final regular season match for both teams and Culver City, who is this year’s Ocean League champions, won 25-9, 25-21, 25-12. Pictured right: Doris Woods serves the ball for BHHS in a 25-12, 3028, 25-12 loss at Brentwood on Nov. 11. Prior to that, the Normans took a set from Santa Monica on Oct. 30 before falling in a 25-17, 27-25, 22-25, 25-22 loss to the Vikings. The Normans end their season with a 5-15 overall record and 2-6 in Ocean League play. CIF playoff seedings for girls volleyball are announced later today, although it is unlikely that BHHS, which finished in fourth place in the Ocean League this year, will earn a playoff berth. BHUSD K-8 Sports Program Starts Monday By Matt Lopez All four Beverly Hills K-8 schools will join together again this year to take part in the fun middle school sports program. This year’s season begins Monday afternoon, after school, with a pair of basketball games.
Due to construction, Horace Mann doesn’t have a home court, but Monday it will play at Beverly Vista and Hawthorne will play at El Rodeo. The schools will play twice a week, and soccer and football will also be added to the
rotation throughout the school year. The program is at no cost to the students, and each participant gets a Beverly Hills sports shirt to wear that matches their school colors.

school. He recalls the economy was tough in the 1930s and 40s and, during some years, his father would close his business at the end of the day, then go on to a night job at the nearby Goodrich tire plant. He said his mom “could stretch a dollar farther than anyone...and she had to.” When Spitz was 15 he and five friends pooled their worldly possessions and came up with $12 to buy the remnants of a 1922 Model T Ford from a junkyard. They restored it in the auto shop of Garfield High School, but couldn’t buy gas because they didn’t qualify for gas rationing stamps. “My dad had 20,000-gallons of gas under the ground, and because we didn’t have gas rationing stamps, he wouldn’t give us a drop,” he said. “He was a very patriotic guy.” Fortunately, the engine ran on cleaning solvent, which was plentiful, but not strong enough to start the car, so the boys had to push it to get it to run, whereupon it exhausted billowing white clouds of smoke. At UCLA, Spitz learned that his best aptitude was in Science, especially physics, but he decided to prepare for a business career, and graduated with a major in accounting. After graduation he was hired by a CPA firm Harris, Kerr Forster, which specialized in hotels and restaurants. Six months later he was drafted and served two years in the

Nine months later he was promoted to chief accountant of Hilton International with an office in NYC’s Waldorf Astoria. In that capacity Spitz had brief assignments in London and Madrid before spending 16 months in Istanbul fulfilling advisory responsibilities in the final construction of the first modern hotel in Turkey. After completing his assignment in there, he returned to L.A. for a visit. While there he met Barbara on a blind date arranged by mutual friends. She lived with her family in Beverly Hills, and had attended Horace Mann, Beverly High and UCLA. Spitz remembers that his first impression of Barbara was that she was beautiful, warm and smart. After a whirlwind week of dating including dinners at the Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica and the Santa Inez Inn Spitz returned to New York, and wrote to Barbara inviting her to visit. Her parents didn’t approve at first, but Barbara prevailed. Spitz recalls meeting her at Idlewild airport, kissing her and falling in love with her on the spot. One week later she accepted his proposal. Spitz recalled: “I phoned her Dad and before giving us his blessing, he teased me by saying you are 3,000 miles away – what will you do if I say no?” They eloped and were married in New York by a rabbi set up by the mothPremium seats are still being held for dinner patrons and members. er of the friend who had arranged their blind date in Beverly Hills. The next day they flew back here to honeymoon at The Beverly Hilton which had just opened. A highlight of their was a “smashing” wedding reception that Barbara’s parents hosted with no more than one week’s notice for planning it. The newlyweds then took up residence in New York. Shortly afterward Spitz decided it was time for a career shift. They moved into an apartment in Beverly Hills, and Spitz accepted his father-in-law’s offer to join him in his metal bedframe manufacturing business, known at the time as Central Welding. During five years of working together they expanded the product line by acquiring a manufacturer of similar products in the Bay Area, and becoming licensed by a St. Louis firm to produce sofa sleeper mechanisms. They changed the name of the company to Bedline Mfg. Company and moved from a 5,000 -square foot building to one of 35,000. Once again in 1960 Spitz shifted careers, accepting an appointment as VP of Hilton Credit Corporation, operator of the Carte Blanche credit card. Three years later, upon the death of Spitz’s father-in-law, Spitz left Hilton once again and assumed management of Bedline, further expanding it, and eventually purchasing and occupying a 250,000-square foot plant on 13 acres in Whittier and opening a satellite assembly plant in Cincinnati in order to distribute the products nationwide. While in the manufacturing business, Spitz was able to capitalize on his aptitude for physics, designing products and authoring 25 patents. Spitz sold the company in the mid-1980s to Leggett & Platt, a Fortune 500 company. While Barbara was pregnant with their first son, Steven, the Spitzes purchased their first home on the 2300
November 7, 2014 | Page 19 block of Coldwater Canyon. Five years later in 1963 after the birth of their second son, Ken, they moved to their current home in Beverly Hills. Spitz’s first connection with the community was several years of membership on the board of directors of the Municipal League. In 1970 he was elected to the BHUSD Board of Education. Spitz served nine years on the school board, including a year that was added in 1979 when the voting date was changed. From 2000 to 2004 Spitz served as president of the Beverly Hills Community Sports Center; from rom 2002 to 2004 he served on the General Plan Update Community Character Committee; and in 2010, Spitz was appointed to the school district’s Finance Committee where he served for three years. These days, Spitz spends much of his time overseeing his and Barbara’s investments, doing his own bookkeeping, playing tennis, supporting his favorite charities – The City of Hope and Jewish Vocational Services, attending UCLA athletics, hanging out with 9-year old grandson, David, with whom he went fishing in Alaska last July, and annually re-visiting New York with Barbara. Spitz remembers that Beverly Hills was much more “villagey” in the old days, citing the local hardware store on Rodeo Drive as an example. He still misses his and Barbara’s favorite local restaurants–Swiss Cafe, La Scala Boutique on Little Santa Monica, The Luau, RJ’s for Ribs, Richlors, and Trader Vics. His favorite rum-based drink there was the Tortuga. “I never met anyone who could handle two of them” he said, “I tried it on our first wedding anniversary, and Barbara had to drive home, help me up the stairs to our apartment and into bed!”

Challenges are multi-day rides that push participants physically and mentally to the limits. Currently, challenges include paid participants in Full Challenge rides who support the free participation of injured veterans and healing heroes, including meals, lodging and a jersey. Today, challenges are limited to 200 riders and each ride is a sell-out with a waiting list. from OnStar can be delayed because it is ultimately a third party relaying information to the dispatcher about an incident they aren’t on the scene of. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. The undersigned caused said Notice of Default and Election to Sell to be recorded in the county where the real property is located. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to
those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 916-939-0772 for information regarding the trustee's sale or visit this Internet Web site www.nationwideposting.com for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case 20110134003620. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. Rabbi Jacob Pressman LARGEST NATIVE AMERICAN ARTS FAIR
Senior Editor John L. Seitz Special Sections Editor Stephen P. Simmons ****** Founding Publisher March Schwartz (Publisher 1965-2004) Clifton S. Smith, Jr. (Publisher 2004-2014)
Last Tuesday, Californian voters rejected a proposition that would have allowed a Native American tribe near Fresno to build a Las Vegas-style casino on land nearly 40 miles from its reservation. It is a pity that gambling is often the only way we think about Native Americans. This weekend, the Autry Museum in Griffith Park The Courier is proud to be Education Partner is offering us a more interesting and beautiful opportunity to approach that culture, by organizing the largest Native American arts fair in Southern California. From more than 40 tribes, 200 Native American artists will show their amazing jewels, pottery, textiles, paintings or beadwork. The program also promises performances and activities for the whole family. Before the Spaniards arrive, the Tongva tribe inhabited Beverly Hills. They named the beautiful place we live in “the gathering of What do the Boycott Divestment Sanctions (BDS) movement and the “Jewish” Voice for Peace the waters,” which was translated later into Spanish–El Rodeo de (JVP) have in common? Both the BDS and the JVP are trying to stir up hatred towards Jews and Israel Las Aguas. This weekend might be a good occasion to learn more by provoking acts of divestment from Israel with the premise that it is responsible for the suffering of about the first people who dwelled in Rodeo Drive. the Gazians and West Bankers. In reality, the Gazians and West Bankers are responsible for their own state of affairs due to their terrorist foundations. BDS began in South Africa, a country which came out of apartheid, and has also decided that Israel was/is an apartheid state. The unemployment in South Africa is 24.5-percent, and GDP a negative 4-percent. In other words, the economy of the country is in shambles. So what do all these good-for-nothing BDS individuals do? They boycott Israel/Jews instead of focusing on improving their own conditions. However, Israel’s GDP is 3.4-percent and its unemployment rate is 6.5-percent. Israel is a small country which has independently prospered beyond anyone’s imagination. The BDS and JVP are intent on taking Israel back to the middle ages and have co-signed the BDS’ destructive proposals. Both groups are enjoying what is happening in the universities where Israeli guests are blocked by these groups or causing continued anxiety to universities by pushing their “Divest from Israel” rhetoric. One JVP boardmember tells it all: “The last 12-years, he has helped build Jewish Voice for Peace on the theory that transforming US Jews into a force for liberation would be an excellent first step.” During these months of the horrendous killings of children and civilians by Hamas and presently from the West Bankers, BDS and JVP continue to blame and bash Israel as if they were the only actors in the arena. In fact, regardless of what the West Bankers or Gazians proclaim, it is clear they are coaxed to love the terrorists (who kill kids), be proud mothers of suicide bombers, and enjoy praises by Abbas. Even with the rebuilding of the tunnels in Gaza for terrorist purposes and Hamas’ use of resources for a 4-story radio building and not for their own people, BDS and JVP persist on their attack of Israel and the Jews. Presently, Israeli Arabs or so called “Palestinians” are rioting in Jerusalem, with part of this being at the Temple Mount, the oldest site of the Jewish religion where important Islamic sites are also Cartoon for The Courier by Janet Salter found. However, the issue is that Muslims do not want the Jews to go pray at the Temple Mount. Therefore, when Abbas speaks of East Jerusalem as their capital, he is also implying that no Jews are And now a repeat of Janet Salter’s annual rant about the welcome. Similarly, Jordan has also banned Jews from Jerusalem and destroyed all the synagogues existence of Daylight Saving Time. . . . when they were the legal owners and governing body of the West Bank. The BDS and JVP are seekHOW MANY DIGITAL CLOCKS ARE STILL? ing for a repetition of this by wanting to give East Jerusalem to the West Bankers. HOW MANY KOO-KOOS NO LONGER SHRILL? Instead, the BDS and JVP should consider at least the following: (1) Israel spent $320,000 Shekels HOW MANY TIMEPIECES REMAIN UNCHANGED? to care for Syrians who have been wounded; (2) Israel is sending medical personnel to Africa to help AS THEIR OWNERS WANDER DERANGED? combat Ebola; (3) Helping California helping with the worst drought (JVP are located in Oakland); ONLY THE SUNDIAL KNOWS FOR CERTAIN (4) Israel’s physicians just took care of the daughter of Haniya’s, the master of Hamas. The Courier reported Superintendent Woods’ stunning reaction as: “it doesn’t mean “LET’S MAKE IT LEGAL AND LEAVE IT ONE WAY!” much beyond a bit of bad publicity.” . . . .And she’s never giving up!! Well, to residents, parents, and students it does mean much beyond a bit of bad publicity. It means that proficiency rates in English and math have plummeted the past few years under the stewardship of Dr. Woods and his Chief Academic Officer Jennifer Tedford. Dr. Tedford’s highly publicized remarks amount to a shameless public relations campaign. She following assaults, burglaries, grand thefts and robbery have been reported by called the CAHSEE test, which had been administered for 10-years a “pop quiz.” She also said that TheBHPD. Full proficiency is a high bar, but Margo overlooked the BURGLARIES crucial fact: Had the lower proficiency standards remained intact, Beverly High still would not have 10/27 400 North Canon Drive ($314) 10/27 200 South Doheny Drive ($1,200) come close to meeting them. So the 100-percent standard is an empty excuse. 9000 Wilshire Boulevard ($310) Since then, Mr. Margo has doubled down, writing on Facebook about how “we’re in good com- 10/30 10/31 8000 Wilshire Boulevard pany because other districts have been placed on academic probation also.” Have our expectations 10/31 300 North Doheny Drive sunk so low that instead of offering solutions, our school leaders justify the status quo by crowing 11/01 Wilshire Bl./North Carson Road GRAND THEFTS about poor performance in other districts? Boardmembers and staff may try to deceive, but numbers don’t lie. Beverly’s CAHSEE scores 10/22 300 North Beverly Drive ($4,000) 9000 Brighton Way ($2,700) plunged from about 90-percent proficient in math and English to about 80-percent after the board 10/27 10/28 9000 Wilshire Boulevard ($1,050) unanimously voted to adopt Common Core. District administrators are directly responsible for this 10/28 300 North Rodeo Drive ($3,500) decline. Their policies, rubber stamped by this board without any serious due diligence, have dumb- 10/29 200 North La Peer Drive ($3,000) ed down the curriculum while grouping all students together regardless of ability. This one-two 11/02 9000 Brighton Way ($1,040) ROBBERY punch has proven academically disastrous. Just to give one example, here are some of this week’s Common Core 4th grade spelling and 10/31 400 South Almont Drive ($9,620) vocabulary words: put, year, jaw, wood. As a comparison, here are a few real vocabulary words from The Courier welcomes and appreciates Charlotte’s Web: rummage, phenomenon, veritable, pompous. Amazingly, BHUSD urges elementary “Letters to the Editor” parents and students to choose “Good Fit Books” that don’t contain new vocabulary words.
