BHUSD Superintendent Steve Kessler To Retire
THIS ISSUE
Inside: Beverly Hills Style - Winter 2016-17!
By Laura Coleman District sources confirmed to the Courier that Superintendent Steve Kessler, who has been with the district for 40 years, plans to shortly announce his retirement. Kessler, who is currently in the middle of his three-year contract as Beverly Hills Unified School District’s superintendent, is expected to ask the Board of Education to accept his retirement today. “I am aware that Superintendent Kessler has made a decision to retire and
the board will provide further information Friday morning,” said Board President Howard Goldstein. “Mr. Kessler’s professional accomplishments over the past four decades have been remarkable, but his true legacy is the generations of students that have become positive life learners.” Plans for a search to replace Kessler are expected to get underway immediately. Pussy & Pooch Becomes First Pet Boarding Facility In Beverly Hills By Victoria Talbot After 15 months of negotiations, Pussy and Pooch finally received City Council approvals for a Zone Text Amendment to become the first pet boarding facility in the City Tuesday. The decision teetered at 22, with Councilmembers Julian Gold and Kathy Reims withholding approval. Vice Mayor Nancy Krasne, filling in for Mayor John Mirisch who was out of the country, and Councilmember Lili Bosse held out until a deal could be struck with opposing Councilmembers Julian Gold and Kathy Reims. The fact that a business that is so widely appreciated by such a large portion of the community was so nearly denied the opportunity to provide a service so vital to their huge customer base raises questions about the City’s vision for the future of Beverly Hills. El Rodeo Eighth Grader Elliot Katz Starts Charity To Help The Homeless By Matt Lopez It’s the season for giving, and El Rodeo eighth grader Elliot Katz is doing his best to give back to those in the community who need it most. From Nov. 27 to Dec. 11, Katz is hosting an online auction to benefit a charity he personally founded to help those in the local homeless community. The online auction can be accessed via Katz’s charity’s website at: www.BiddingForGood.com/ReachingO utCalifornia, where people can donate, see a list of donors and get more information on where their contributions go. Reaching Out California is Katz’s 501(c)(3) charity aimed at helping homeless people in Greater Los Angeles. Katz said his parents have been taking him and his siblings to the Midnight Mission on Skid Row to serve meals at least once or twice a year for the past several years. “There are so many homeless people living in Los Angeles. We can't help everyone, but we can make a difference in some of their lives,” Katz said. “I'm hoping that one day, we'll be able to help someone who's homeless off the street and maybe reunite him with his family. They say that if you save one life, it’s like saving the world.” Contributions to the charity have already been made from local business-

Meals On Wheels Proves Rewarding For Beverly Hills Volunteers By Laura Coleman For Beverly Hills Meals on Wheels volunteer Karen Cook, the non-profit community service program is so much more than just a way to be of service to the community’s homebound residents. It’s also a way for her to deepen her ties with the community she grew up in and continues to call home. Two times a week, together with her caregiver, Cook oversees the delivery of meals prepared by Cedars-Sinai Medical Center to various Beverly Hills residents who are homebound, disabled, chronically or temporarily ill, and/or alone. The food, which is planned by a dietician, includes both a hot lunch and a cold dinner. “The people are so happy to see me,” she described. “One woman is outside of her house waiting for me to come.”
Karen Cook
Founded by Marion Weinstein in 1978, the community program is a virtual lifeline for residents who don’t have easy access to healthy, affordable food. Meals are $6 a day and Kosher meals are $7. The organization is actively looking for volunteers. For information on volunteering call Pat Jacobson at (310) 423-3517. Council Authorizes Ambassadors to Provide Security for Youth Sports on BHUSD Fields By Victoria Talbot The City Council has approved the expenditure of $52,305.04 for the Ambassadors to continue to provide field management on properties at Beverly Hills High School, Beverly Vista, Horace Mann and Hawthorne schools in response to increased incidents between unauthorized users and youth sports organizations. The Ambassador program was contracted by the City in 2015 to provide assistance to the community in the business triangle as needed, deter aggressive panhandlers and aid tourists and residents. The agreement extends the use of the Ambassadors to manage the problems until the Joint Powers Agreement (JPA) is renewed in July 2017.
Currently, the City is providing funds to Beverly Hills Unified School District in exchange for the use of school district facilities during the times that school is not in session. The fields are heavily used by youth sports organizations, including American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) and the Beverly Hills Little League (BHLL). Increasingly, “unauthorized” users have been occupying the fields when youth leagues are scheduled for play, said Community Services Director Nancy Hunt Coffey. These confrontations, she said, began occurring at least a couple of times per month. Hunt Coffey identified the unauthorized users as organized adult (see ‘JPA’ page 20)

Rodeo Drive Lights Up For The Holidays On Sunday By Matt Lopez Holiday lights, food, friends and live music – what could be better? Rodeo Drive is hosting the biggest Holiday party of the year Sunday, beginning at 5 p.m., along the 200 block of Rodeo at the annual Rodeo Drive Holiday Lighting Ceremony. This year’s event promises to be more exciting than ever, thanks to a new partnership with digital marketing company, AGENC, creating a fully immersive and interactive Holiday experience. Longtime Entertainment Tonight host Mary Hart will emcee the festivities, which includes a live performance from singer Megan Hilty. The #RodeoGivesBack initiative asks all visitors to bring a coat for a coat drive to benefit The Salvation Army. Visitors are encouraged to use the #RodeoGivesBack hashtag on social media to let the community know about their own charitable giving. Food and refreshments will
be provided by many local vendors. The Rodeo Drive holiday display includes 500 strings of lights, 100-plus ornaments, 28 banners and 15 oversized ribbons.
By Laura Coleman Labeled the “must do” lunch of the season, the Hollywood Bag Ladies Luncheon is one of Beverly Hills’ most talked about events. Starting at 11 a.m. today, hundreds of the most fashionable women in the county will gather at The Beverly Hilton and literally do battle with each other – mostly using their credit cards – to possess some of today’s most enviable purses. It’s all in good fun, of course; after all, the funds raised go to support Lupus LA. According to Lupus LA founder Dr. Daniel Wallace, 1.5 million people in the U.S. suffer from Lupus; 90 percent of whom are women. “The more we talk about
it, the more people are familiar with it,” he said. “Lupus is what happens when the body becomes allergic to itself.” Now in its 14th year, money raised from the annual luncheon goes toward research, local medical fellowships and patient support groups. “The first year we raised $75,000. Now we’re raising $2 million a year,” he said. “We really capitalize on the power of Hollywood to shine a light in Los Angeles.” Hosted by Jenni Pulos and Jon Kelley with a special fashion presentation by Salvatore Ferragamo, this year’s fundraiser will honor Terri Seymour, Nicole Fogel, Sheila Milstein, and Joan Robbins. The event is centered on a
fun-filled silent auction of 200250 coveted handbags donated by boutiques on Rodeo Drive such as Prada, Ralph Lauren, Bally, Ferragamo and others, as well as directly from the collections of top designers. Lupus LA Events Manager Megan Stubbs said that for the second year, the ladies will be able to make use of an online bidding system using their phones. In the past, she said, women would hover around the bags they wanted, or sometimes turn the bid sheet over or hide pens. For more information, visit: lupusla.org. To get in on the online bidding, visit: https://www.biddingforgood.c om/auction/auctionhome.acti on?vhost=lupusla.

Salkin Building Is City’s Newest Historic Landmark By Victoria Talbot An eight-unit mid-century modern apartment building in the Vernacular style is the newest property to become a local historic landmark. The 1956 building designed by Jules G. Salkin, at 328 S. Rexford Dr. was approved for landmark designation Tuesday, and it will become the 33rd landmark designation in the City. Salkin was a local architect with an office on South Robertson Drive. The building is one of two small-scale apartment buildings Salkin built in Beverly Hills. The other is located at 360 S. Elm (1955). Born in Philadelphia to immigrant parents, in 1916 Salkin became an accomplished violinist and violist. He played in his own small orchestra and in 1938, he was invited to join the Taliesin Quarter, at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Arizona School of Architecture. He completed studies and then became a licensed member of the Southern California Chapter of
the American Institute of Architects in 1955. He moved into developing larger apartment buildings and condominium complexes in Glendale, West Covina and Van Nuys. He later had several firms that developed, designed and built condominiums and large apartment buildings, as well as apartment management and investment firms. The building’s current owners are engaged in a lengthy restoration process to preserve the building and have sought landmark designation to take advantage of the City’s Mills Act. A Mills Act contract can aid historic property owners to reduce property taxes in order to encourage maintenance and restoration work on historic properties.
328 S. Rexford Dr.
The building was previously identified as a potential historic resource in the City’s 2004 historic survey. The distinguishing features include, “decorative horizontal panels defined on the façade with exterior circulation corridors; large, elongated metal address numbers rendered in a period-appropriate typeface; and an aluminum brushed canned bullet lamp attached to the horizontal panel at the north end,” according to Urban Designer Mark Odell.
Nerano Restaurant Brings Amalfi Coast To Beverly Hills By Victoria Talbot Nerano, a Toscana Restaurant Group eatery new to Beverly Hills, opens on the City’s west end on Nov. 19. The location, 9960 S. Santa Monica Blvd., is in itself cause for excitement in an area typically underserved by dining establishments. Owners Andy BrandonGordon and Carlo BrandonGordon say that the coastal cuisine and temperate client of the Amalfi Coast of Italy inspired the culinary creations after the village of Nerano, their favorite spot on the coast. Executive Chef Michele Lisi, mixologist William Perbellini, Wine Director Emily Johnston and General Manager Nick DiLullo come together with veteran Maitre d’ Patrick Doherty to create a dream team for celebrated dining. The experience begins in the BG Lounge, an elevator and a world away, reminiscent of the Bar Hemingway in Paris. Downstairs, guests are seated in the main dining room that faces Santa Monica Blvd. with floor-to-ceiling windows, all of it imagined by Belzberg
Nerano
Architect Group. From a discreet side entrance off Santa Monica Blvd., guests enter the exterior courtyard by Rios Clementi Hale Studios, which evokes the atmosphere of a quiet beach resort. Interiors are by Tim Clark, with custom-designed banquettes, chairs and sofas in Ferrari red, navy blue and saddle leather. Nareno’s location will enhance the emerging neighborhood adjacent to the Peninsula Hotel, Waldorf Astoria and the Ten Thousand building. Across from the recently repurposed Al Grimmet’s Garage building – now the highly-acclaimed Marc Selwyn Fine Art Gallery – the restaurant is a welcome gentrification of the City’s west neighborhood as the area changes to meet the needs of the evolving community.

Berluti To Open In Golden Triangle In 2017 By Laura Coleman JLL Senior VP Houman Mahboubi announced this week that he inked a deal to bring luxury retailer Berluti to the Golden Triangle. Mahboubi said the 3,300 square foot space at 9533 Brighton Way, just off of Rodeo Drive, would open its doors as Berluti by Summer 2017. “This is the perfect location
for them,” he said, noting he worked with them for over 1.5 years to find the right location. “Brighton Way in general has some of the top names across the street and next to them.” Berluti is part of luxury giant LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton. Mahboubi said the deal really came together once he was subsequently given the listing by the landlord of the former Emporio Armani space. He ultimately repped both the landlord and the tenant in the transac-

Visit BHHS’s Our Town This Weekend By Anna Lee Treat yourself this weekend and escape into the world of Our Town, Beverly Hills High School’s Theatre Lab students’ performance of Thornton Wilder’s classic American drama. In Theater Lab, an elective program, students can choose from a variety of Visual and Performing Arts classes that pique their interest. Teacher/Director Karen Chandler, in her first year heading the theatre program, has created a production using minimal props with an emphasis on miming. She explained: “The day by day is the same. The sameness of life that we ignore and endure and don’t realize how precious it is, in its sameness, it is comforting. The repetition of life that adds comfort, but at the same time, we don’t notice how beautiful it is.” Our Town continues to resonate with audiences, Chandler says, because of its simplicity as it covers a nearly three-decade span from 1901 to 1930. Chloe Malik-MacDonald, a BHHS junior who plays the role of Emily Webb Gibbs, said she as always found immense joy and comfort in theater. Describing the rehearsals, she says, “It’s definitely been very crazy. But, there’s never a point that we felf disconnected at all. We are all here to support each other.” The production features 42 actors and many roles have been double cast,

so several major characters will perform in two of the four performances. However, everyone, even the roles that have been double cast, participates in each performance in a different role. “Theater is based on the willing suspension of disbelief that an audience member can walk in and experience,” Chandler said. There are four opportunities this weekend to see the production in BHHS’ Salter Family Theater. Performances will be 7 p.m.,Friday and Saturday with a 2 p.m. Sunday matinee, Nov. 20. The final performance for middle school students will be at 3:45 p.m., Monday, Nov. 21.

Exciting Things Are Happening At Olympic Gold & Jewelry As It Celebrates Five Years In Beverly Hills
I
n Beverly Hills, amidst a sea of beautiful boutiques, Olympic Gold & Jewelry sparkles with an authenticity and a desire to please its clientele that is refreshingly appealing. Olympic Gold and Jewelry buys, sells, trades, accepts consignments and makes loans on all new and vintage jewelry, diamonds, fine watches, gold, silver, antiques and collectibles. They also sell precious metals. This season, Olympic Gold & Jewelry celebrates its fifth year serving the Beverly Hills community. This hidden treasure is uniquely located within the premises of U.S. Private Vaults, the only high security private safe deposit box company in L.A. county. While Olympic Gold & Jewelry may be situated in an environment that boasts a high level of security, the service is warm, welcoming and clearly client-centered, as the company’s loyal following already knows. “We see ourselves as a consultative type of service business,” says proprietor Hillary Barth, who along with her husband Steve, runs Olympic Gold & Jewelry and is a founding member/director at the U.S. private vault. “Quite often, our clients contact us or visit our store with collections that they may have inherited from their parents, or they may have something in a drawer that they happened upon and are wondering about. In either case, they’re not sure what to do or where to go.” “It may be a bit old fashioned, but we believe in spending as much “one-on-one” time with our clients in order to clarify their needs. We want to create a collaborative relationship, be a resource for education and empower people with knowledge about their possessions so they may make informed decisions,” Hillary continued. “Ultimately, the time and care spent with clients is reflected in our curated collection of one-of- a kind jewelry and luxury goods”. Wander into Olympic Gold and Jewelry on any given day and you may discover the Art deco diamond watch you’ve longed for, Mid-Century “Jackie O” pearls, your vintage diamond engagement ring, a piece from Tiffany or Cartier, and that fine Rolex watch; truly there is something for every taste and every budget. “We love unique, one-of-a-kind jewelry. It’s fun and wonderful to know that everyone may come into our store and find what they are looking for, said Hillary. “If it’s not in our display case, we are thrilled to search our vault for that special piece which is just right for you”. “What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness,” John Steinbeck once wrote. Luckily, in Beverly Hills, we don’t have to worry about it getting too frosty. A little chilly, sure, but nothing a nice coat and scarf can’t take care of. We’re hoping for perfect weather on November 20 for the Rodeo Drive Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony, a family-friendly event that has become a Beverly Hills holiday tradition. We hope to see everyone there. The Rodeo Drive Committee, helmed by Mark Tronstein, has teamed with marketing firm AGENC to put together an event that promises to be more exciting than ever. Hosted by my fellow Children’s Hospital Los Angeles trustee Mary Hart, the ceremony will be capped off with a stirring musical performance by talented singer Megan Hilty. Food and refreshments will be aplenty, so come hungry. After the celebration, we hope this winter edition of Beverly Hills Style provides some tips and tricks to help have a merry holiday season. The holidays are about giving, and Tuesday, Nov. 29 is Giving Tuesday, a great opportunity to give back. In our Philanthropy section, see the details on the charitable efforts from great institutions like The Wallis, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and Good Shepherd Center for Homeless Women and Children.
In the winter Calendar, we’ve compiled a list of the season’s most exciting and unique charitable gatherings. In our Fashion section, bundle up for winter with some of the hottest trends from Neiman Marcus’ redone Beverly Hills store. The holiday season brings with it some of the tastiest and most irresistible treats. Our Cuisine section highlights favorite winter recipes from Wolfgang Puck and others. Whether you want to look or feel great, our Beauty and Fitness sections aim to help you become the best version of yourself this winter. Our Travel section has everything you need regarding the top winter destinations. Winter also means football and our Entertaining section will give you all the help you need to score a touchdown with your Super Bowl party. We are proud to present winter 2016-17 issue of Beverly Hills Style.

Home For The Holidays Good Shepherd Center Programs Let Community Give Back For many of the women and children in the Good Shepherd Center for Homeless Women & Children (GSC), the holidays are a time of uncertainty. Now, the community can help ease some of those concerns through several of GSC’s programs:
• Organize A Drive GSC welcomes donations collected for the following new goods: canned foods, gift cards, toiletries, paper goods and makeup/beauty products.
• Move-Out Packages Support a family, or single woman, graduating from the GSC program on their path to independent living by donating: comforters and bedding, blankets, pillows, towels, glasses, silverware, kitchen utensils, pots and pans, toasters, blenders, coffee pots, bathroom sets, trash cans, hampers and cleaning supplies.
• Gifts for Women in the Emergency Shelter Purchase gifts for the women living in GSC’s emergency shelter and those that receive services through the Drop-In Center and Outreach Programs.
• Adopt-A-Family Through GSC’s Adopt-a-Family/Adopt-a-Resident program, the community can provide GSC families and single women with clothing, toys and other gifts that they would otherwise be unable to afford. For more information on how to donate, call 213235-1965 or email asandoval@gschomeless.org.
Live L.A. Give L.A. At Children’s Hospital Los Angeles Children across America dream of new toys and gifts every Holiday season, and that’s no different for the young patients at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Donations can be made through CHLA.org/GiveLA and will help provide hope and healing to thousands of families that truly need it this Holiday season. With 350 specialty programs and services just for kids, CHLA is on the cutting edge of helping children recover faster. BEVERLY HILLS

true gift to the community, the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts is not only a world-class entertainment destination, but an educational and community resource that houses GRoW@The Wallis, A Space for Arts Education, which was gifted by Gregory Annenberg Weingarten and family. No doubt, The Wallis is changing lives and now giving donors the chance to impact the future of the performing arts. “The City had the foresight to buy the whole block, with a vision for Beverly Hills and beyond,” says Mark Slavkin, The Wallis’ director of education. “It’s not just a theatre, but a place to translate our values of serving the community into reality.” The 2016/2017 season will bring more than 300 performances of more than 60 different programs of theater, dance, music and stellar artists to The Wallis’ stages and classrooms. “For those who love the performing arts, there is something for everyone at The Wallis” says Rachel Fine, manag-
ing director. “No one is doing the volume we do in different genres with such an ambitious program.” Both Fine and Slavkin point out that donors “get a front-row seat to giving” to a new institution (the complex is in its fourth season) that is still growing. “They can get in on the ground floor and help create opportunities that don’t exist and then see them thrive and lead to something positive,” says Slavkin. “All we want to accomplish requires philanthropic support; giving is crucial.” The center’s production of Spring Awakening, a co-production with Deaf Theater West went to Broadway, earning Tony nominations; and Debbie Allen’s (a Wallis board member) Freeze Frame, about gun violence, recently played The Kennedy Center. “We can all be proud of the arts education programs at The Wallis that serve the students of Beverly Hills and our surrounding communities,” said major donor David Bohnett, chairman of the board for The Wallis. “Come join

of classic and contemporary repertoire. With “people my age, this is for me,” says McIntyre. “The Wallis has been a good influence.” The troupe’s premiere show will be a “devised piece... we found connections in powerful stories from our lives and made them into a story,” says McIntyre. After leaving a recent rehearsal, McIntyre said he thought to himself, “I could do this for three more hours. My involvement with The Wallis has reassured me that acting is what I want to do and set me on a career path.”

he array of student matinees, education and outreach opportunities offered through “GRoW” at The Wallis are made possible by gifts of all sizes from individuals, corporations, small businesses, and foundations, Opportunities for support include: • The Wallis Student Arts Reporters Program gives select students the chance to attend performances and learn the craft of criticism. • Community Classes: Tiny Tots Move & Groove and Dancing Through Parkinson with Invertigo Dance Theatre and Dance Sundays — Free outdoor classes led by Debbie Allen. • Master Classes have featured such artists as Suzanne Farrell, Judith Jamison, Patti LuPone and Arturo Sandoval. • A partnership with the BHUSD brings students from all the public schools in Beverly Hills, and more to matinees. • Workshops for educators on the arts and arts integration.
Wallis. Always interested in songwriting, as a Beverly Hills High senior McIntyre took a “Songwriting for the Theater” class, one of many Courses for Young Artists at The Wallis. “I loved it,” says McIntyre, “I learned that a song is useless unless it propels the story. You put a song in when words can’t express what it can.” He wrote lyrics and the book for the 10-minute musical his team produced at the end of class; and then worked on a BHHS adaptation of Alice in Wonderland that became a musical. Now, the 2016 BHHS graduate is a member of the new Wallis Youth Theater Company, directed by Madeleine Dahm. Trying out was a last-minute decision. While seeking a job at the 24th Street Theater, the interviewer, also a friend of Slavkin, “insisted I apply.” He just made the deadline, auditioned and was accepted in the group that will perform a mix

or Coby Bird, 14, involvement with The Wallis has been transformative. Bird is a member of The Miracle Project, for youth and young adults on the autism spectrum, using music and theater to “bring them out of their shells.” Elaine Hall’s program was embraced by and partnered with The Wallis for its weekly classes. When one member told the group about a bullying experience, all shared similar experiences and the result was the antibullying musical The Intimidation Game, performed at The Wallis. When Broadway Dreams, an intensive week of singing, dancing and acting classes for aspiring youth returned to The Wallis, Slavkin spoke with program Founder-Director Annette Tan-
ner, and got Coby a fellowship. He was the first student in the national program with autism. “It was life changing,” said his mother Rachael Bird. After Coby initially told his mother he couldn’t handle the choreography class, she learned from the teacher that “he was great.” So great, in fact, that the faculty nominated him as one of three students to go on to the Broadway Dreams Showcase at Lincoln Center next week. “This is all thanks to The Wallis,” says Bird. “For parents of children with autism, who are, always picked last to go to The Wallis and have the opportunity to be in real theater is amazing for us and to see changes in Coby just from June to now.” BEVERLY HILLS

or a chef the stature of Wolfgang Puck, it can be difficult to pick a favorite season for food. Puck, owner of both Spago and CUT in Beverly Hills, as well as several other restaurants around the world, says he has a soft spot for winter and holiday foods. The key to it all, says Puck, is being surrounded by loved ones and keeping it simple in the kitchen. “For the holiday season, making delicious food doesn’t have to be complicated,” Puck tells Beverly Hills Style. “So keep it simple and focus on spending time with your family around the table and in the kitchen, preparing seasonal recipes that everyone can enjoy.” Wolfgang Puck offered a couple of his favorite winter treats to Beverly Hills Style.

Recently-opened Coral Tree Cafe at 225 S. Beverly Dr. has quickly become a go-to spot for locals craving a healthy, organic meal made with fresh, sustainable ingredients. Helmed by Executive Chef Joseph Gillard, Coral Tree Cafe offers a variety of healthy, quality foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with vegan and gluten-friendly options. Gillard said that Thanksgiving dinner can be made healthy, with an organic feel, it just needs to be planned heavily in advance. Gillard stressed home cooks should “combine equal amount of classics with new stuff, depending on what’s available at the farmer’s market.” One of his favorite Thanksgiving meals is his Lemon Verbena brined turkey. Gillard shared the recipe below with Beverly Hills Style. 1 lb. Sea salt 2 cups Organic sugar 1 Parsley bunch 3 Fresh bay leaves 1 oz Fresh lemon verbena leaves (save stems to smoke legs) 2 Yellow onion, peeled and sliced 2 Garlic heads, cloves peeled and crushed 6 Meyer organic sliced lemons 2 gal. Gearys CEO Tom Blumenthal
s the oldest business in Beverly Hills, it’s fair to say that Gearys Beverly Hills is unrivaled when it comes to offering the perfect gift selection. Next year the iconic destination for luxury home items, jewelry and watches will celebrate 87 years. That milestone is just another step along the way in continuing the legacy of superb tradition says Gearys CEO Tom Blumenthal. With a dedicated staff–many have been part of the Gearys family for decades–the attention given to customers is exceptional. From acquiring an exquisite heirloom in Gearys antique jewelry collection to structuring that whimsical set of mismatched china, Gearys is unparalleled. “There are very few stores that have been around as long as we have,” notes Blumenthal, whose grandparents first founded Gearys. “I think at some point everybody in Beverly Hills has shopped here, or their parents have, or their grandparents have. We have a lot of stories. It’s all about the stories.” On tap for this season, Blumenthal says he anticipates people will want to simply enjoy life. “The election is behind us, so let’s have fun, celebrate and enjoy the holidays,” he says. “Let’s entertain extravagantly and pull out the good silver and dust off all that old china and have a party. Pour the Champagne. Get the glasses moving. That’s the way I’m looking at the holidays. It’s going to be about a lot of fun.” To liven up your table, Blumenthal suggests simply buying new salad or dessert plates, or even getting a new set of linen to really enhance the look of the meal. “Just do little things,” he advises. “Hosting at home is about the people you bring together.” -Stories by Laura Coleman

S
ince its inception in 1907, Neiman Marcus has cultivated a tradition of elegant fashion, unique merchandise and gracious customer service. Of course, to stay at the top of the luxury goods market, reinvention is required. To that end, Neiman Marcus Beverly Hills continues to differentiate itself by staying current. This Thanksgiving marks the completion of a multi-years long total renovation of the luxury retail space at 9700 Wilshire Blvd. which began in 2013. “The remodel has been about far more than just the physical renovation,” explains Neiman Marcus VP Gretchen Pace. “The key for us is striking the correct balance between preserving our heritage and continuing to evolve. In an era when so many services are depersonalized, we are striving to add more hospitality to every aspect of the store.” With Art Deco undertones, an expansive openness and energized lighting that pervades all five levels, the renovation practically shouts “potential fash-
ion moment” at every turn. Ready to try on your next pair of Christian Louboutin shoes? With a Champagne bar adjacent to the shoe department, it’s hard not to enjoy slipping on a new pair of Jimmy Choos. Famished from deciding between Gucci and Manolo Blahnik? ies, cakes, sugar cookies, egg nog, turkey, stuffing and mashed potatoes. Sound good? Winter and the Holiday season that comes with it might be the most trying time of the year for someone focused on fitness. Working out regularly and eating clean might be the plan, but it’s not easy when there’s so much temptation at every turn, whether it be gatherings with coworkers or family and friends.
Eating clean Ashley Furrow, Ph. D., a personal trainer at Beverly Hills’ Equinox, said the chief complaint she gets from clients is how to avoid delicious treats that show up at their office, especially during the Holidays. “In order to stay on track, it is pivotal to set food boundaries for yourself,” Furrow said. Furrow recommends grading food on a sliding scale of 1 to 3, with “1” being a pass and “3” being devour the treat. It all depends on the emotional attachment one has with the treat, Furrow said. “If a vendor or friend brings in treats for the entire office, it’s
easy to pass from an emotional standpoint because it wasn’t brought specifically with you in mind,” Furrow said. “However, if they bring in a treat they know you like, specifically with you in mind, you may be more inclined to try a few bites. You can eat a little of that without feeling too much guilt.”
Winter Workouts
Move, move, move Even though Furrow does the bulk of her personal training at Equinox Beverly Hills, she stresses that one doesn’t need to shell out big bucks for a gym membership if they want to get in shape. Sure, a gym membership and professional tutelage from a trainer might speed up the process, but most successful workouts can be done from the Beverly Hills personal trainer Ashley Furrow uses the parallel bar at Santa Monica’s muscle beach. comfort of one’s own home. “You do not have to go into a gym to do a workout – your Furrow recommends think- involved in the calisthenics com- your lifestyle or achieving one body is a machine,” Furrow said. ing outside one’s comfort zone munity at “muscle beach” in certain aesthetic,” Furrow said. “All you need to do is move it.” and coming up with inventive Santa Monica. Dr. Ashley Furrow’s ‘10-100’ Home Workout You don’t need to break the bank on a costly gym membership, or even expensive home fitness equipment to get in good shape. Follow Dr. Ashley Furrow’s daily home workout plan below. Little to no equipment is needed – just your mind and body. Before attempting these exercises, it is recommended to search YouTube for videos on how to properly perform each of the workouts, or consult a personal trainer at your local gym if you still have any questions. Most importantly, don’t try to do too much. Start at 10 and work your way up, and stop when you’ve pushed yourself too far, then pick up where you left off the next day. 10 20 30 40 50

ENTERTAINING ince it was founded in 2000, Gavin B. Keilly’s Beverly Hills-based GBK Productions has been at the forefront of luxury party planning and gifting for some of Hollywood’s biggest events, including the Oscars, Emmys, Golden Globes, BET Awards, GLAAD Awards and many more. GBK Productions has ventured into the rising trend of lavish Super Bowl parties and recently produced the gifting lounge for DirecTV’s Celebrity Beach Bowl Super Bowl party. Super Bowl LI is Sunday, February 5, 2017 from NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas. Keilly sat down with Beverly Hills Style to discuss how to score big with your Super Sunday party.

Beverly Hills Style: Have Super Bowl parties always been a big deal, or have they become more prominent as the NFL grew into such a TV ratings juggernaut in the last several years? Gavin B. Keilly: They have always been big, but interestingly enough the demo has changed. In the last five years, a lot more women seem to actually enjoy the game rather than just being there to socialize. BHS: What’s the first thing to keep in mind when throwing a Super Bowl party? GBK: Definitely seating is the most important thing. Make sure to get some giant pillows, go to IKEA and buy extra inexpensive folding chairs so everyone isn't crowded around a TV or squished on a couch. BHS: Some would say nothing is more important at a Super Bowl party than the television. What do you recommend? GBK: Rent or buy a projector so the game can be seen clearly from different rooms. It can also be great for outdoor screening, so maybe guests could actually play a game of football while watching. BHS: Chips, dip and beer are

GBK: Yes, in fact on the invite, suggest everyone take UBER or Lyft to the party. We know plenty of drinking will take place over the four hours the game is on. BHS: What should the party host do after the big game is over? GBK: There will be upset guests because someshrimp, steak, guacamole, black one’s team lost, so the host has to find beans, sour cream, lettuce, a way to get everyone leaving on a chopped tomatoes, cheese, tortillas high. 0 9 4 3 7 5 1 6 8 2 “Squares” is a timeless game that never goes out of style at Super Bowl parties, Keilly says. • Simply draw up – or buy – a chart like the one pictured above with 100 squares inside, and 10 on both the X and Y axis of the chart. • Partygoers can buy squares for a fixed price (most office pools run from $1 to $10 per square), and then the numbers 0-9 are randomly drawn and placed on the outside grey squares. • At the end of each quarter, the square that corresponds with the score will win a set amount of the prize money. For example, in the chart above, let’s say the team on top is the Cowboys and the team on the left side is the Patriots. If the score is Cowboys 9, Patriots 0 - then the person whose square is on the very top left of the chart would win.
Create A Super Gift Bag The key to a great Super Bowl gift bag, Keilly says, is to pass it out before the game starts. Create something guests will refer to throughout the big game. Small notebook and a high-quality pen • On the cover, note who’s throwing the party and the two teams playing. Inside, include an empty notes page, interesting trivia about the teams, a score card with rosters, a crossword puzzle and some football trivia. Games • Print out a picture of a player and put a different one in each bag, whenever that player makes a big play or scores points, the person with his picture gets a prize. Prizes can be anything from gift cards to large boxes of candy. Odds and ends • A protein bar is always a good idea for a little snack that guests can munch on in the midst of all the alcohol and fatty foods that will be on hand. Also include a little bottle of hand sanitizer, or maybe a mini bottle of alcohol. Going deep • If there’s no budget restrictions, go for the big play. Think of gifts like bluetooth speakers, sporty/stylish sunglasses, player bobble heads or even football jerseys. – Stories by Matt Lopez

SUPER CUPCAKES—GBK Productions teamed up with Gourmet Cupcakes to create a football field-themed cupcake display. hen it comes to hair, master stylist Yuki Takei knows what it takes to look beautiful. “Doing hair is like making art,” he explains. “I always first ask, ‘What’s going on in your life?’" Born in Tokyo, Yuki dreamed of moving to Paris to be an artist–but his mother helped shepherd him to beauty. At 24 Yuki moved to Los Angeles, fueled by dreams of Hollywood glamour portrayed in film–and he was not disappointed by the bevy of stylish clients who soon found his intuitive hands to be the salve to tame their hair. When he opened Yuki on Burton Way in 1976, he quickly developed a fair amount of celebrity following write-ups in such publications as Town + Country, Women’s Wear Daily, Vogue and Harpers Baazar. By the time he opened Yuki on Sunset (which endured for 32 years), his salon was known as the place to be. Celebrities flocked to the salon, but it was Lucille Ball and the quintet of close friends Nancy Reagan, Betsy Bloomingdale, Lee Annenberg, Elizabeth Wilson and Marion Jorgensen who really delighted him. A chance meeting with Barbara Walters led to his becoming her personal stylist, travelling with her for years around the globe and being privy to the personalities that surrounded her. Later he did the same for Joan Rivers and Mrs. Norton Simon. These days he works at Cristophe Beverly Hills, continuing to see clients he has known for over 40 years. “They come every week and they tell me anything and I never repeat it,” he says. hen Jessica Vartoughian moved to the United States at the age of 16–an Armenian girl who’d grown up in Romania–she never dreamed that one day she would become the manicurist to the President and First Lady. “I wanted to be a psychologist or a teacher,” she recalled of that time four decades ago. “But I needed to bring in money.” After attending beauty school, she started working at a salon where she did nails and quickly determined that the entire profession of nail care needed to be elevated to an elite status. Fast forward to an introduction to Mrs. Nancy Reagan when Ronald Reagan was the governor of California and by the time the Reagans were in the White House, Jessica was taking the red eye to D.C. every two weeks to do both their nails. The Courier’s Shin Takei Reviews The 2016 Rolls Royce Dawn – The Ultimate Cruising Machine By Shin Takei Autumn is the best time of the year for driving a convertible. The strong sunshine of summer is slowly fading and a different scent permeates the clean, crisp air. For some of us, the leaves turn color and beautiful fall scenery makes it that much more appealing. What better convertible to cruise around in than a Rolls Royce Dawn? Powered by a 6.6 liter twin turbo V8 engine that produces 563 horsepower at 5250 rpm with 605-pound-foot torque at 1600 rpm, the Dawn is no slouch for a 5200-pound vehicle. The eight-speed ZF transmission is like the Wraith and its shift points are calculated by GPS connection anticipating the roads and curves coming ahead. All this translates to a 060 time of 4.8 seconds with a top speed of 155 miles per hour. Widow Of Jackie Robinson To Be Honored By Baseball Scouts At The Beverly Hilton By Matt Lopez Rachel Robinson, widow of the late Jackie Robinson, who broke baseball’s color barrier, will be honored by the Professional Baseball Scouts Foundation on Jan. 14, 2017 at The Beverly Hilton. Rachel will receive The Pioneer Award, in celebration of the 70th anniversary of Jackie becoming the first black player in Major League Baseball when he started for the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947. Rachel Robinson was born
in Los Angeles and attended UCLA, where she met Jackie. The two married in 1946, one year before Jackie was signed by Branch Rickey of the Dodgers. Jackie Robinson went on to a Hall of Fame career with the Dodgers, and his jersey number “42” has been retired throughout Major League Baseball. Rachel founded the Jackie Robinson Foundation in 1973, the year after his death. The foundation provides scholarships, career services and leadership development to college
students across the country, having already doled out more than $70 million. Construction is set to begin on the national Jackie Robinson Museum. Last year’s event honored Joe Torre, Maury Wills, Andre Dawson, Terry Collins, Bill White, Roland Hemond, Larry King and the creator of the foundation, Dennis Gilbert in a star-studded event. leagues that show up to use fields in Beverly Hills on a regular basis without obtaining the required valid permits. The teams do not generally represent residents of the City; many are from outlying areas. Incidents of falsified permits and “doctored” permits have occurred. Unlike a casual get-together for a game of touch football among neighbors, teams of soccer players in matching jerseys that clearly identify two opposing teams occupy the fields and refuse to relinquish them to youth sports. Volunteer coaches, said Hunt Coffey, have increasingly been involved in verbal altercations in front of the children. Police have been called on several occasions. The BHUSD did make an effort to provide security, with one guard stationed at the high school and another rotating through all of the K-8 schools. Incidents continued to happen when guards were not present. Hunt Coffey explained that the new fields at Horace Mann and Beverly Vista are especially attractive to unauthorized players, who climb fences to access the K-8 schools. Adult use of the K-8 fields is prohibited because they are not designed to accommodate the increased weights and because they are located in residential neighborhoods. One resident reported a ball kicked through the window of their home by the unauthorized adult leagues; balls often land in the streets. At the high school, one group regularly must be evicted from play, said Hunt Coffey. Unauthorized teams also arrive just prior to youth sports, after the gates are unlocked in preparation for their arrival, and then
routinely refuse to relinquish to the organized youth sports. The unauthorized users “have become more aggressive and less willing to relinquish the fields to the rightful permit holders,” said Hunt Coffey. Volunteer coaches have been complaining to the City and the school district. These clashes come when field space is in limited because of the removal of an upper field at Beverly Hills High School and the fields at El Rodeo, which are not in use during construction. The City’s solution is to spend the money to continue to use the Ambassador services and to have a presence to deter unauthorized users that will continue until a more permanent solution can be undertaken when the JPA comes online. “I’m hoping to clarify roles and responsibilities when we negotiate the JPA,” said Hunt Coffey. In the two weeks that the Ambassadors have been enforcing rules, there have been 23 unauthorized groups on the fields that have been asked to leave. On Oct. 18, the City Council authorized the use of the Ambassadors, and initiated the use on Nov. 1. To continue the enforcement activities, however, the council had to authorize the expense through the end of the fiscal year. This expenditure will allow one ambassador at Beverly Hills High School 5-9 p.m. MondayThursday; one ambassador on Saturday 6:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m., three ambassadors on Saturdays 7:30 a.m.–10:30 a.m. and two ambassadors on Sundays 7:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. where they are needed according to scheduling of games and practices for youth programs.

dog kenneling, ignoring the 5-0 recommendation of the Planning Commission for a Zone Text Amendment and 4-1 for a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) and the widespread support from the community. The community wrote 86 letters in support of the proposed boarding facility. The councilmembers’ comments reflected a planning perspective that is historic to the City, favoring the luxury retailers that attract tourists and visitors, and excluding businesses that serve the community, such as Pussy and Pooch, in the business triangle. The prevailing view may have swung that pendulum of success too far away from serving the community, sending potential customers outside the City for goods and services. Reims sat on the Planning Commission several years ago, and Gold has never served on the Planning Commission. Both demonstrated a vision that alienates local consumers by failing to address the resident’s needs. Ultimately, if there was ever a match to be made for Beverly Hills luxury retailers in the Pet Care industry, Pussy and Pooch is the most logical one. Pussy and Pooch has been providing high-quality pet care at its facility at 9388 S. Santa Monica Boulevard for three years, including “Social Club,” a kind of hybrid socialization and doggie day care, grooming, twice-monthly dental care, vaccinations and wellness exams and dog training with a high-end line of luxury pet care products, including designer clothing, accessories, prepared foods and a raw food bar for dogs. The operation includes a ventilation system with odor reduction technology, UVC lighting to kill bacteria, allergies and viruses; “potty” stations with anti-bacterial drainage systems and hospital-grade anti-bacterial flooring. Their trainers address behavior problems for the most elite households, often patrons who must travel regularly and really need a highly-skilled pet boarding and training facility that caters to their special

demands. Hence, the demand for their unique set of services. Cities nationwide are looking at ways to accommodate the growth in pet ownership and adoption, often reversing ageold animal prohibitions, and in that, Beverly Hills is not unique. Pet boarding, “is an important addition to the community,” said Bosse. “More people came out in support of the dog park. We are a community that really cares about their animals.” Indeed, across the country, dogs are increasingly considered important and pampered of the family. Gaudio and his team of trainers, handlers and retail specialists have also been very active in the business community, sponsoring events for the Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce such as Small Business Saturday, and regularly hosting pet parties to benefit animal rescue organizations throughout the area. Gaudio has spent $40,000 on fees and traffic studies, and double that on legal fees. The process has taken more than twice as long as he originally anticipated. Because it was a “first,” City planners were careful to look at all the angles. Twelve letters opposed the facility, citing parking, loading, animal waste and odors that could affect the businesses to the south. The narrow alley way behind the building hosts several restaurants, salons and businesses, with a loading zone that experiences intense usage for all the businesses’ deliveries. Opposition from the neighbors immediately to the south included several comments about the lack of parking and the overuse of the loading zone. In the CUP meetings with the Planning Commission, the neighbor’s concerns were meticulously addressed. Dozens of conditions were imposed that would prevent animal waste violations, accommodate neighbors’ parking and loading needs and for the maintenance of the highest quality standards that the City of Beverly Hills has come to expect from retailers. “Beverly Hills residents want the option to board their pets overnight within our City limits,” said Planning
Commission Vice Chair Lori Greene Gordon. “It was the challenge of the Planning Commission to craft an amendment to the Municipal Code that would enable this.” No one expressing opposition was at the meeting Tuesday. Pussy and Pooch has responded with valet parking service Tuesday – Saturday, and a drop-off/pick-up service at the rear of the store for their Social Club customers. Customers call ahead and staff is waiting when they arrive to drop off or pick up. With boarding, there will also be a shuttle service, further reducing the need for parking as client pets stay overnight. The City Council further conditioned that there could be only one such facility in the business triangle at any time, and that dogs should be walked to the east of the facility away from restaurants and businesses. The facility has been walking dogs in the area since opening, though Gold and Reims had not done their homework and were unaware of the services already offered. Bosse and Krasne would not give up. Krasne, acting as mayor, vowed not to end the meeting until the ordinance passed. Sensing a changing tide and the pent-up demand for resident-facing businesses, especially in the burgeoning area of pet care, they prevailed. “I think the Planning Commission got it right,” said Bosse. “We want to keep businesses here, instead of sending [residents] outside of our City.” “I am delighted that such an outstanding member of our businesses community will be the first overnight boarding facility in our City, and I am pleased that the City Council was able to work through any concerns that they had to allow this to happen,” said Greene Gordon. The CUP will come before the City for review in one year to assess effectiveness and make changes. “It is incredible to have such overwhelming support from the community, and specifically, City Council,” said Gaudio. The facility is expected to be in operation early next year.

George Clooney hosted MPTF’s (Motion Picture & Television Fund) “Hollywood’s Night Under The Stars,” an evening of musical performances and special presentations celebrating its 95th year of helping those who entertain us. George opened the show with a warm welcome to the audience, teasing, “the good thing is, I’m not singing tonight. I’m hosting.” Michael Douglas then came on stage to deliver a heartfelt dedication to his father, Kirk, who was watching in the audience. After sharing stories from throughout Kirk’s lifelong career, Michael was joined by the crowd in singing Happy Birthday to his dad, who turns 100 this December. Kirk gave a few remarks, even admitting that he’d always hoped his son would be a “doctor or a lawyer. But seeing him tonight, he’s a pretty good actor.” The show was filled with musical highlights including a medley of Les Miserables classics headlined by Hugh Jackman, Helen Reddy (an MPTF resident herself) singing You And Me Against The World, Johnny Mathis signing his hit Misty, and a show stopping performance of Listen from Loretta Devine that brought the audience to its feet. TV and Broadway star Norm Lewis gave a powerful performance of Music Of The Night, and Kevin Spacey delighted the crowd with performances of both Can I Steal A Little Love? and Mr. Bojangles, complete with a top hat and some smooth dance moves. The evening also featured some more sentimental moments, including personal stories from the MPTF residents delivered by Jeremy Renner and Matt Bomer. Bryan Cranston and Chris Pine shared the stage to recount their familial connections to the MPTF campus – Cranston’s mother and Pine’s grandmother were both residents who benefited from the services of the facility and support and compassion of its caretakers. The night concluded with a performance of Somewhere by Johnny Mathis and Norm Lewis supported by a full choir. The event also marked the launch of MPTF’s “All In” program, which was introduced by long-term supporter and volunteer Yvette Nicole Brown. The campaign will help to share MPTF’s message across all members of the entertainment industry, and connect with the next generation who will carry on the organization’s mission.

Event chair Jim Gianopulos reminded the audience of the ongoing work being done and the constant need for support. “Those of us who have worked and thrived in our industry owe a special duty to give back to our comrades in need,” he stated. “As you’ve heard, this residential and health care facility is only a small part of what the fund does, providing in home care, financial assistance, and many other needs for over 100,000 members of our community. The future is exciting but the needs are great.” The event was chaired by Ann and Jim Gianopulos and directed by Richard Jay-Alexander. Jay Landers produced, and Emmy-winner William Ross served as musical director, conducting a 17-piece orchestra. Kate Flannery, Derek Hough, Jane Lynch and Sheryl Lee Ralph also appeared at the event, which took place at the MPTF Wasserman Campus in Woodland Hills. It was presented by AARP Foundation, American Express, Delta Air Lines, and Target, with in-kind support from Casamigos, Heineken, Monsieur Marcel, Red Truck and Sprinkles.
It’s time to get the yards of red carpet steam-cleaned and freshen up the backdrops, the first announcement of A-List celebrities who will be part of the 28th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival, which runs Jan. 2–16, at the Palm Springs Convention Center has just been released. Unlike the other entertainment-based awards where the awardees are not known until announced the evening of the event, the Palm Springs Festival, throughout the months of November and December, pre-announce its whole star-studded line-up. And, this year, as in previous ones, the phrase “star-studded” is not overused. Multiple Oscar and SAG awardee Tom Hanks will be presented with the festival’s prestigious “Icon Award” for his riveting performance as airline pilot Capt. Cesley ‘Sully’ Sullenberger and the events surrounding the “miracle on the Hudson.” The film Sully (director Clint Eastwood) takes the viewer back to Jan. 15, 2009 when Sullenberger glided his disabled plane on to the icy waters of New York’s Hudson River, saving all 155 people aboard. Yet, even as he was being hailed as a hero by the press and public for his skill an investigation was unfolding that threatened to destroy his reputation and career. THE FEAR OF THANKSGIVING
In the beginning the celebration of Thanksgiving seemed like a good idea. The Pilgrims had sailed from England in 1621 under the command of Capt. Christopher Jones, known for impromptu over the top cocktail parties, fondness for single heiresses and complete lack of sense of direction having to rely on MapQuest to deliver his passengers to Plymouth Rock. After a severe drought, prayer and a winning lottery ticket, the pilgrims put on their game face and proceeded to celebrate the first Thanksgiving. The rest is history until years later when the relatives arrived on the scene making this holiday an anxiety filled event–certainly one to fear. In a perfect world images of Thanksgiving dinner and a house full of relatives and friends should conjure up a feeling of happiness and fond memories. However, for my family and an array of quirky acquaintances with nowhere else to go, these ingredients add up to a recipe for disaster. It was Freud, not Sigmund, but my barber Manny, a noted behavioral scientist when he’s not cutting hair, who first recognized that the stressors of Thanksgiving contribute to it being the peak time for family violence, visits to the emergency room, and hair loss. Over the years Thanksgiving has evolved into a collection of numerous diverse elements. There is the annual Thanksgiving day parade complete with giant helium balloons depicting a bevy of pop culture characters including Rocky & Bullwinkle, Big Bird and a Viagraenhanced Snoopy; the NFL tripleheader which often features the leagues top turkeys and “Black Friday” when the stores open at the stroke of midnight and you transition from the warmth of a holiday feast to the freezing sidewalks of the local mall and risk being trampled when the doors open. All of this to buy an outdated TV receiver residing in a damaged box with a five day warrantee. As the big day approaches I turn my attention not to the menu but to the strategic seating plan. Prior experience suggests that it would be prudent to separate Uncle Sam, Uncle Ben, Auntie Mame and Aunt Jemima since they all have a craving for Wild Turkey, the 80 proof kind that comes in a bottle, I have also discovered that it’s a good idea to put some distance between cousin Irving, a vegetarian who hates meals that center around dead animals and cousin Dudley whose schooling in England has prompted him to advocate overthrowing our government and installing a king and queen thus eliminating the concept of red states and blue states. No table arrangement would be complete without Jack and Jill, a couple of exspouses uniting on turkey day for the sake of
their children, or Wilbur and Orville, in order to help them fly Wright. In one of those unexpected happenings that sometimes occur at family Thanksgiving dinners, Aunt Lillian, a petite woman who measured five foot-two before the golden years downsized her to four feet-six, was inadvertently seated at the children’s table between my nephew Norman, fresh from his anger management session at the Bates Motel and totally absorbed playing “Angry Birds” on his iPhone, and my grandson Andrew, a text crazed teen afflicted with low battery anxiety. The good news is that instead of an adult helping of Brussels sprouts, Aunt Lil was able to score a kids portion of mac & cheese, a dish befitting her diminutive stature. Not to be outdone, Piper, our family Yorkie, successfully campaigned for a separate pets table for her celebrity friends who include Bo, the Obama’s Portuguese Water dog, accompanied by a secret service detail; Clifford, the big red dog, who measures 25 feet from paws to head thus giving him an unobstructed view of what’s going on in the kitchen, and Beethoven, a St. Bernard named after the composer who makes ends meet by creating music for dog food commercials. The Thanksgiving dinner table is, however, nothing but a vast minefield of danger and looming alienation. As the meal begins the quietness that once enveloped the room has disappeared and been replaced by shouting matches across the table, banging fists and obscene remarks. No topic is off limits as outbursts dealing with genetically altered turkeys, serial killers, obese pets, money laundering, reincarnation, and who gets the leftovers dominate the heated discourse. Uncle Vanya, who owes his existence to Chekhov, tries to restore order while advocating giving two infant cousins of the opposite sex a bath together, and is permanently silenced by Aunt Bonnie and Uncle Clyde. Out of trepidation and self preservation those guests with triple digit IQ’s elect to remain silent so that they can live to eat again another day. If all else fails, there is always Chinese take out. My favorite is turkey lo mein served up in a microwavable Asian paper container with a pair of bamboo chopsticks and a fortune cookie containing a prolific quote from Confucius that sums it all up, “Gobble, Gobble Till You Wobble.” The renowned Chinese sage certainly had a way with words! Cartoon for The Courier by Janet Salter
Astrology By Holiday Mathis TODAY’S BIRTHDAY (Nov. 18). This year, when you’re happy, you're ecstatic. You’ll do your best and give your all to the relationship that makes your life sing! Work improves in January, and you’ll add a new skill set to your arsenal. March is your chance to trade out a tired aspect of your life for new purpose. Children make you proud in May. Aries and Cancer adore you. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). If you said yes to everything, your life would be chaos. But you can safely say yes to the thing that’s offered today. This one is too good to miss. Bonus: Your new priorities will order themselves. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). You’ll attract good people. Givers. People who are naturally drawn to relate in a friendly, cheerful way. These are the ones you'll keep coming back to. Commitments are a no-brainer. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Why spend so much time in another person’s world? That's easy: love. This is what people who love each other do. They really try, to understand each other. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Your influence over others will be profound today. Your thought waves affect the stranger passing on the street, the clerk in the grocery store and the person picking up your mail, as well as those individuals in your inner circle. PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar. 20). The wealthy American industrialist J. Paul Getty said that if you can actually count your money, then you are not really a rich man. If this is true, you’ll cultivate a sense of prosperity in yourself by simply not counting. ARIES (Mar. 21-Apr. 19). You’ll run into people you know in places you weren’t expecting to see them. This will present an interesting conundrum —nothing you can’t handle, of course. TAURUS (Apr. 20-May 20). Your job goes better when your loved ones have your back at home. If you’re distracted by domestic details and responsibilities, you’re not likely to put in your best performance. Delegate. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). The ones who need you will really need you today. In fact, whether or not you want to be, you’ll be among the most needed. Well, they couldn't have chosen a more qualified candidate! CANCER (June 22-July 22). It’s a little like you’re being forced to act like you’re having fun. Roll with it, and then don’t be surprised if all this acting becomes the truth. This is what Holly wood is built on! LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). It’s the small things that matter most to you today. To be able to count on someone, a secure relationship with a person who makes you laugh is a little slice of heaven. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). It’s hard to believe if you don’t really live there, but it’s absolutely true: Some places are populated with cheerful people. Cheerful! Really! Go looking. This is the existence you deserve. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). You will let them all know what you think, but you'll do it in such a cool way that they might assume that they've come up with it themselves. They're not trying to rip you off; they just really admire you.
