Congress Targets 401(k), Plans For Deficit “Cliff” By Laura Coleman In anticipation of next year’s comprehensive tax reform, the American Society of Pension Professionals and Actuaries (ASPPA) this week launched the “Save My 401(k)” campaign to raise awareness about the dangers retirement savings accounts are facing in the wake of the nation’s looming fiscal crisis. “We know [Congress will] raise money somehow, and that puts all of us potentially on the chopping block,” ASPPA Direc-
tor of Retirement Policy Judy Miller said. “Everybody that’s in a plan now would be impacted.” The so-called “fiscal cliff” that stands at the precipice of the year’s end, includes the scheduled expiration of Bush era tax cuts, a temporary payroll tax cut, an unemployment benefits extension and the special depreciation allowance, in addition to $1.2 trillion in cuts over 2013-21 known as the sequester. ers are spending the final weeks of 2012 working to avoid a crisis that economists warn could plunge the U.S. back into a recession. “As we debate how to deal with our long-term debt, we need innovative ideas,” Rep. Henry Waxman told The Courier. ”I know how important these issues - the environment, the debt, and our local economy - are to my constituents and I will continue to push for innovative solutions.” While innovative solutions are key to healing the nation’s long-term debt, such as Waxman’s proposal to put a price on carbon pollution, American Benefits Council Senior VP Lynn Dudley warned slashing 401(k) contribution limits could be catastrophic to the economy. She emphasized that because the money is invested on a tax-deferred basis, it is not lost expenditure. In fact, Dudley said, it’s quite the opposite, with every dollar tucked away in a deferred savings account impacting the economy five-fold once it is taken out. “Think what a crazy world it would be if we had people retiring in record numbers, like we do now, and there
would be no money coming out of [401(k)’s],” she said. “In the case of retirement….you’re actually generating money.” Changing the tax benefits of retirement savings account is a genuine concern. The last time full-scale tax reform occurred in 1986, Congress cut 401(k) contributions by 70 percent. Los Angeles County Economic Development chief economist Robert A. Kleinhenz estimated 10,000 Americans cross the 65-year-old threshold every day – a figure estimated to sustain for the next decade. More than 11 percent of Los Angeles County residents are over 65. With high unemployment rates and a still shaky recovery from the Great Recession, the potential impact on California for the scheduled $88 billion in national cuts for 2013, will ripple across the state. Roughly half of the cuts will be defense-related, which is expected to cost the state 225,500 jobs according to a study released by George Mason University earlier this year. Kleinhenz said Los Angeles would likely bear the lion’s share of that job loss. “The recovery is fragile,” he said. “If we go over the fiscal cliff entirely, we could see a recession in 2013.”

Wells Fargo Survey Finds Millions of Americans Unprepared For Retirement By Courier Staff Millions of Americans are underprepared for retirement and have diminishing financial investment prospects, according to Wells Fargo's annual national retirement survey released in late October. The survey, conducted on 1,000 middle class Americans ages 25 to 75, found a staggering 30 percent of Americans say they will need to “work until at least 80,” in order to live comfortably in their retirement years, up from 25 percent a year ago. Similar to 2011, 70 percent of middle class Americans say they’ll work in retirement, with 39 percent saying they’ll work out of financial necessity. Thirty-four percent of middle class Americans estimate their retirement income will consist of 50 percent or less

The event takes place through the streets of the City beginning at Rexford Drive and the Parkway to promote leadership, teamwork and the courage to make the right decisions, according to VSCF Chairman Karén Setian. of their current annual income. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, median household income for Americans in 2011 was $50,054. Americans say they need less than half of their pre-retirement income and this translates to $25,000, close to the poverty line for a family of 4. “Our survey results showed the majority of people are basing retirement calculations on some sort of a guess,” said Wells Fargo’s Executive VP/Director of Institutional Retirement and Trust Laurie Nordquist. “Doing the math to figure out exactly what you’ll need in retirement is an important step to take – one that is well within anyone’s control – toward a financially secure retirement. As basic as that sounds, our survey tells us that not everyone is taking that step.” will then manage traffic control at the intersections, and monitor the course for runner safety. The areas most frequented by panhandlers are the business triangle and Beverly Drive, Latta said. “Elevator lobbies, entrances or exits of City-owned parking structures are currently the most popular place for panhandlers to set up shop,” Latta said, adding sidewalk cafes and outside dining areas are also targets. Panhandling is protected by the First amendment of the U.S. Constitution and the City does have an ordinance that regulates aggressive panhandling that has been in effect since 2007. The ordinance prohibits panhandling within-15 feet of open air dining, ATM’s, designated bus stops, on public bus-

Latta said panhandling increases according to weather and season and said the City is expecting a bump in panhandlers during the holiday season. The City heightened its panhandling efforts, Latta said, in March 2010 when a local homeless man was found dead. He repeatedly rejected offers from the City to help him apply for benefits and obtain housing. A local business allowed him to stay in their alley and people gave him enough spare change to manage day-to-day. Latta says that as residents are out shopping and dining this holiday season, they should simply say “not today” or “no thank you” if approached by a panhandler. has been leading monthly prayer services for women at the Wall for over two decades, sent shock waves throughout the Jewish community when it became known that she was stripped searched by police following her arrest. According to Geller, it’s just the tip of the iceberg about a divisive internal issue in Israel in the wake of inevitable social change. “This is a symbolic issue and also an issue of what public space means in Israel,” she told The Courier. “The way to engage change is through working together in conversations, not through confrontation.” The Western Wall or Kotel, constructed around 3,300 years ago, is the most holy place for Jews to pray in the world. Run by a group of ultraOrthodox rabbis that oversees the segregation of men and women and forbids women to wear prayer shawls, the concrete holy place is the epicenter of a theological gap in Israel between modern and traditional Jews. “It seems to me that the Kotel is the end of the process,” B'Nai David-Judea Rabbi Yosef

Ultra-Orthodox Rabbi Dovid Eliezrie disagreed. “We’re seeing a shift to a greater sense of tradition and religiosity,” he said. And while what was done to Hoffman was “disgusting,” he said, she still was breaking tradition. “If you sever religion from state, it would undermine the very core of Jewish identity, which would weaken the core of the Jewish state,” Eliezrie said. In response to the clear need for unity among the Jewish people, Siegel announced that he would be putting together a task force to engage the community. “It’s a complex, sensitive reality that we need to work through,” he said. “It takes time for a culture to accommodate change.” Siegel is himself an emblem of change. Rabbi Nicole Guzik, director of Sinai Temple Israel, said changing the attitudes and policies in Israel are important for future generations. “It’s hard as a rabbi to teach contradictions to our children,” she said, referencing how Jewish American women are taught to wear prayer shawls when they pray but are instructed to remove them when visiting the wall. Goldberg emphasized that a parcel tax was one of the few options the district had in order to get off the state’s dime and solve the systemic fiscal problems addressing Beverly Hills schools. “If we do not find a way to generate $3.5 million in revenue, there will be cuts to the classroom,” he said. PIONEER
(continued from page 4)
City-owned structure at 315 N. Crescent Dr., has been a fixture in the City for more than 80 years. Recently, however, Pioneer ran into rent trouble. Originally, Pioneer was paying $9,858 per month until construction started on the Annenberg Center and Crescent Parking Garage. With that construction came a closure to Crescent Drive that hurt Pioneer and other small businesses in that area south of the closure. Pioneer owner Jeff Tilem said his business took a 30 percent hit that it has yet to recover from. With the closures, the City began granting rent reductions and in June 2010, Pioneer’s rent was reduced to its current rate of $7,299.72. Starting in January, that number is slated to jump back to the previous rate, plus inflation; good for a 24 percent increase. Tilem said if that happens, Pioneer goes out of business. Tilem has previously asked to be allowed to sublease a portion of Pioneer’s 4,155square-foot space, which would allow them to find another tenant to help the City find the market rate it’s looking for. Pioneer has yet to hear back on that request. The newest verbal offer came after a meeting last week with the recently-formed ad hoc committee of Mayor Willie Brien and councilwoman Lili Bosse. It extends Pioneer’s current rate for a year, but Tilem must decide in six months if he wants to opt into a five-year agreement to return to his original rate of rent. With Crescent once again

closed, this time for the Holiday Ice Skating rink, Tilem said he’s concerned about the impact on his business, but says he’s happy there appears to be progress made to help keep Pioneer in business. “I was happy to meet with the ad hoc committee and I’m encouraged that the City wants Pioneer Hardware to remain,” Tilem told The Courier. “We’re still working out all the details.” One detail that will take effect immediately and could help turn around Pioneer’s business is the ability to sell high-priced items. That restriction was in the original lease because when the structure at 315 N. Crescent Dr. was built, it was done so using federal funds under the promise that it would provide affordable services to accommodate the lowrent elderly housing built in that neighborhood on Crescent and Dayton Drives. A handful of shops, including a hardware store, were deemed necessary for those elderly residents. Thus Pioneer and others in the structure were opened as “convenience commercial” stores. Now that the restriction is lifted, Tilem said one item he hopes to sell is an extensive collection of high-priced Beatles’ memorabilia. Tilem said he has the last document ever signed by John Lennon and an original copy of the letter that officially broke up the band, signed by all four of The Beatles. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. “I’ve been a serious, hardcore Beatles collector since the 80s,” Tilem said. “I have one of the largest private collections in the country.” Gala will go toward FIDF’s wellbeing and educational programs for the IDF soldiers and the Negev Wellbeing and Educational Centers. The evening will begin with a cocktail reception at 6pm, followed by dinner and a program emceed by Jason Alexander, and a performance by David Foster and Friends. Silver Linings Playbook - Superb Oscar buzz praising actors’ performances this season is bandied about as often as those superlatives and blurbs from critics whose name and affiliations are miniscule and impossible to decipher. Silver Linings Playbook is worthy of Oscar buzz especially for Jennifer Lawrence’s flawless characterization of Tiffany, a troubled young woman smitten by Bradley Cooper, who also exhibits bizarre behavior, with a performance no less riveting as a former teacher who lost his job, house and wife. The film opens as Pat (Cooper) is being released from a mental facility to the custody of his mother, a marvelous Jacki Weaver before his recommended release time. Once they arrive at their humble Philadelphia home, he is halfheartedly greeted by his dad (Robert DeNiro) in a comedic role which is finally commensurate with his talent. DeNiro is the consummate Eagles fan with more superstitions while watching them play than baseball players who refuse to change their underwear during a winning streak. His rocky relationship with Pat is both touching and hilarious. The humor is infectious and not at all dark considering the subject matter which, I am happy to report,
Jerry Cutler on FILM is handled with deep understanding and compassion. All the stars, including Chris Tucker, a friend of Pat’s from the institution, are excellent with Lawrence giving the stellar performance of her young, incredible career. Whether jogging down the street or immersing herself in a local dance contest, the beautiful Jennifer proves herself worthy of a nomination of the mega prize. Adapted to the screen from a novel by the same name, David O. Russell has written and directed the film with great humor and poignancy. The only reservation I have with Silver Linings Playbook is the ending. Don’t read anything into how I feel or perceive it to be. It is a highly intelligent, satisfying, wellwritten, directed and acted film. The Weinstein Film Company has added another immensely entertaining film to its long list of hits. 4 bagels out of 4

speaking portion and stressed the importance of allocating $4 million of that $10 million surplus to the BHUSD. “The situation could be dire... Because of the fiscal mismanagement of the state, you’re in trouble, we’re doing OK, we need to step up,” he said. “The success of the schools is absolutely critical to the success of the City.” At last week’s City Council meeting, City staff provided the council with a variety of suggestions of ways to spend a $10 million surplus the City has amassed over the last year. Mirisch proposed that BHUSD, which was not on the list of suggestions, should be one of the chief priorities when looking at what to use the surplus money on. The district is facing a $3.5 million shortfall and will be forced to cut from the classrooms if the money is not made up somewhere. It is illegal for the City to simply gift money to the school district, but it may do so as a loan or by enhancing the Joint Powers Authority agreement. The petition is online at www.change.org/petitions/beverly-hillscity-council-support-our-schools-ourcommunity-our-children-our-future. In just the couple of days the petition has been online, it has already garnered 116 signatures. “We need to fill the gap the state took away,” Maybaum told The Courier. “This is an opportunity for the city to help our schools.” Maybaum said after gathering more signatures, they hoped to bring the petition in front of the council at a meeting soon. The Beverly Hills Education Foundation is hard at work, launching a campaign to raise $1.7 million to help the schools. While Mirisch acknowledged longterm solutions will be needed to help the distrct, the $4 million is an immediate aid that can help the district get out of its current rut. Mirisch told the school board that the City Council would take up the issue at a future meeting. million in restitution. According to PR NewsChannel, Judge Stone said it was “quite exemplary that his restitution to the fund exceed any of his own personal gain.” Broidy has served on many boards including the United States Homeland Security Advisory Council, Los Angeles Fire and Police Pension Fund, Kennedy Center, Simon Wiesenthal Center and the Los Angeles Police Foundation.
BUDGET

Roughly 80 percent of the district’s budget is for personnel costs. Board president Brian Goldberg said there would be ample opportunity to discuss solutions if the district proves unsuccessful in its fundraising efforts. The district is required to provide a fiscal map certifying its solvency for the current year plus two years out, an ironic mandate in the face of the state’s fiscal mismanagement, chief administrative officer Dawnalyn Murakawa-Leopard said. Of further concern to California schools is the impending “fiscal cliff”, which will inform the governor’s budget in January with an unknown impact to the school district.

construction work on the rink, which is being done by Willy Biatek Productions. Mayor Willie Brien spoke briefly and called it a “monumental day in Beverly Hills” to be cutting the ribbon on the Holiday Ice Rink. The rink was originally slated to go in Beverly Gardens Park, but nearby residents were alarmed about the fact that the City had not warned them about potential impacts the rink could cause on their neighborhood. Holiday Skating liaisons, councilmembers Lili Bosse and Barry Brucker, moved ahead to search for a different location. The Courier learned that it was Bosse who worked hard to forge a deal between Annenberg Center representatives, BHFD and City bureaucrats. Bosse said the day before the Annenberg’s topping off ceremony, the liaisons directed Assistant City Manager Mahdi Aluzri to look further into why the rink couldn’t be placed on Crescent Drive. In previous years, there had been concerns about how the Annenberg’s construction would be impacted, as well as fire lane safety issues due to the construction.

Not bad for a senior who has only been running cross country for two years. Segal called Saturday’s state final the “best and worst day of my life” as she tried to overcome her nervousness and capture the state championship. “Coach (Jeff) Fisher said my face had an expression of desperation,” Segal said, laughing. Segal said the feeling after the race was “unbelievable” and that the fact that she’s a state champion is “slowly sinking in.” Segal is a natural-born athlete, having also played tennis and soccer at BHHS. She also stars on the track and field team, which is where she was 2 years ago as a standout 2-mile runner when Fisher suggested she consider cross country as well. Fisher said he saw potential in her as a distance runner early on. “She has great endurance, a strong will to win and you can’t really coach that,” Fisher said.
BEVERLY HILLS To offset possible reductions needed to balance the budget and maintain a required three percent reserve, $1.7 million for the current academic year, the school board is counting on the community to step up through philanthropy. In concert with the Beverly Hills Education Foundation’s $1.7 million fundraising campaign, the board will be working with various school-related organizations to inspire the community to support City schools. At Tuesday’s board meeting, Vice Mayor John Mirisch reiterated the notion he proposed at last week’s City Council meeting to allocate a portion of the City’s $10 million surplus to the district, either through enhancing the JPA or a loan.
Aluzri spoke to the Beverly Hills Fire Department, who said it had no issue with the rink being on Crescent. On the morning of the Annenberg Topping Off Ceremony, Bosse went to Annenberg President and Centennial Chair Dick Rosenzweig, who is also on the board of the Conference and Visitors Bureau, and shared her idea to put the rink on Crescent. Bosse said she also told CVB Executive Director Julie Wagner and Annenberg Executive Director Lou Moore and got everyone’s blessing to move ahead. “I didn’t ask, I just said.. great news, we want to put the rink on Crescent,” Bosse said. “Everyone wanted to do it.” “It took a lot of perseverance,” Bosse added. “(City Treasurer) Eliot Finkel was blown away that we got it done.” The ice rink will be open through Jan. 6 and will stay open from noon to 9 p.m. on Sunday-Thursday and noon to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. A more formal opening celebration for the ice rink will take place Saturday at 3 p.m. at the front steps of City Hall. “Ice skating in Beverly Hills is one of the most exciting events to happen in our city,” Bosse told The Courier. “Beverly Hills is the number one place to be during the holiday season.” He said seeing her capture the state title was a proud moment. “It was phenomenal, I was so happy for her, to help her fulfill her dream and goal,” Fisher said. “There’s no feeling to describe that. I knew how much that meant for her.” Segal credits Fisher for helping her and the rest of the team for their success this year. “He’s changed everyone’s mindset, we wouldn’t even think of missing practice or missing a run, we’d feel guilty,” Segal said. “He spends so much time with us.” Next up for Sydney Segal is an invitation to the Nike Nationals in Portland. The Oregon race brings the best runners from across the nation together for an NCAA-style meet which should prepare them for life as college runners. Segal said she’s looking forward to meeting the other runners and competing against them. The $670 worth of free Nike swag doesn’t hurt either, she said. Regardless of what happens in Portland, Segal has already left an indelible mark on the BHHS cross country program. “I want my name to be known forever, Segal said. “My goal is to set records that are so fast that nobody will break them.”

St. John’s Health Center Announces New Leadership Team St. John’s Health Center has announced the appointment of Mike Wall as acting president/CEO, Ken Meehan as acting COO and Patrick Lash as acting senior financial administrator of the hospital “These new leaders bring a track record of quality and operational improvement that will help position St. John’s for long-term sustainability in a uniquely competitive market,” said Sarah Phelan, St. John’s manager of com-
munications. “We are excited about the experience these leaders will bring to the hospital and the community. “These changes will help us further our mission of providing high-quality, compassionate, person-centered care to all who walk through St. John’s doors,” Phelan added. • Wall brings extensive experience in hospital leadership and physician relations to his new role. For the past 35 years, Wall has
UCLA BOARD MEETING–Attending the UCLA Health System Board Meeting were, from left, Arline Gluck, Henry Gluck, board chairman; Candy Spelling, boardmember; Tracey Gluck and Dr. David T. Feinberg, president-UCLA Health System, CEO of the UCLA Hospital System, associate vice chancellor.
UCLA Health System Board Members Discuss Care Delivery At Inaugural Meeting The inaugural meeting of the UCLA Health System Board this month at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center heralded an important next step in the health system’s ongoing drive to deliver the most compassionate and comprehensive care in the country. In recent years, UCLA Health System has made strides in enhancing patient satisfaction and safety, while continuing to uphold the highest clinical standards for patient care. Members of the board, which was created as an outgrowth of the UCLA Health System and David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA Strategic Plan, are influential community leaders as well as members from existing hospital boards who serve as ambassadors for the health system and medical school. After welcoming remarks from Chairman Henry Gluck and Vice Chancellor and Dean of the Geffen School Dr. A. Eugene Washington, Dr. David Feinberg, president of the health system, spoke about the purpose of the organization “to alleviate suffering, promote health and deliver acts of kindness,” and its goal to “heal humankind one patient at a time.” Those goals were illustrated for the board in talks by three leading researchers and physicians. • Surgeon Dr. Kodi Azari spoke about his work in limb transplantation and with Operation Mend, UCLA’s joint program with the U.S. military to provide reconstructive surgical care to servicemen and servicewomen injured in
combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. Dr. Azari is chief of reconstructive transplantation. Last March he successfully completed the first hand transplant performed in the western U.S. • Neurologist Dr. Paul Vespa introduced the board to RONI—the Robot of the Neuro ICU—that enables physicians to remotely monitor and communicate with their hospitalized patients, as well as with members of the medical staff. • And Professor of Emergency Medicine Dr. Mark Morocco provided an overview of emergency medicine and what to expect in the Emergency Room. The Strategic Plan called for creation of the UCLA Health System Board as a way to draw together the diverse efforts of UCLA’s four hospitals – Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, Mattel Children’s Hospital, the Stewart and Lynda Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital and UCLA Medical Center, Santa Monica—and more than 100 community clinics. These facilities have nearly 2,000 physicians, 1,000 residents and fellows, 3,350 registered nurses and 11,500 staff members. Each year, more than 1.5-million patients enter the clinics, and more than 300,000 enter the hospitals. A reception followed the presentations during which board members participated in demonstrations of Urban Zen Integrative Therapy programs, such as yoga therapy and Reiki, and interacted with pets of the People-Animal Connection Program.
worked in hospital administration at facilities across California. Most recently, Wall spent more than a decade as the president/CEO of Northridge Hospital Medical Center, a 411-bed facility in Northridge During his time at Northridge, Wall significantly increased the hospital’s operating income and cash flow, improved employee satisfaction by nearly 40 percent and led the hospital to being named “The Best Place to Work in Los Angeles” by the Los Angeles Business Journal. Before his leadership post at Northridge, Wall was CEO at two other California medical centers. Wall is a fellow with the American College of Health Care Executives as well as a current board member for the Economic Alliance of San Fernando Valley and the Valley Industry Commerce Association. In 1997, he was honored as the American Heart Association Man of the Year. • Meehan joined St. John’s as the acting COO this year after spending more than 30 years working in operations and finance for California-based John Muir Health. Most recently, Meehan was the executive vice president of John Muir Health’s hospital division, comprised of three inpatient medical centers, a lab and four outpatient ancillary centers. During his time as executive vice president, Meehan developed a 10-year
strategic plan and implemented a successful performance improvement infrastructure. Before that, Meehan was the president of John Muir Medical Center, a 425-bed acute care facility in Walnut Cree With expertise in hospital finance and operations, Meehan is a current board member of the Hospital Council of Northern and Central California, the Voluntary Hospitals of America and the BETA Healthcare Group. • Lash brings extensive experience in hospital finance to his role as acting senior financial administrator of St. John’s Health Center. After excelling as the chief financial officer at several medical centers in California and Hawaii, Lash shifted into the world of consulting where he has acted as interim chief financial officer for multiple hospitals and health systems in transition and managed several successful turnarounds of hospitals across the nation. In addition to being a CPA, Lash is a fellow with the Healthcare Financial Management Association and the American College of Healthcare Executives. He is also a member of the American Institute of CPA’s and a finisher of the Ironman Triathlon World Championship in Kona, Hawaii. As part of this shift in leadership, the St. John’s Health Center board of directors was also reorganized.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY (Nov. 30). You’ll work more for love than money. You’ll find projects that challenge you and fit with your selfimprovement goals. Then in February, all bets are off. You’ll be confident, comfortable and committed to making yourself happy–all the while creating more attraction around you. A windfall comes in April. Aquarius and Gemini people adore you. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). You held onto a wish even after you stopped actively pursuing it. What you couldn’t seem to make happen by choice will now happen by chance. This is a matter of faith meets excellent timing. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). It takes courage to reveal your heart, but it takes something more than that to keep it to yourself. Strategic selfcontrol is called for. Consider the big picture and the feelings of all involved. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Do people know what’s acceptable to you? Maybe you haven’t articulated to yourself. You would benefit by drawing personal boundaries, then enforce them. PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar. 20). Romantic love is so strange. Sometimes you want it badly and yet, inexplicably, run in the opposite direction. If you are now acting in a way that seems to be the opposite of what you want, consider that you might be in love. ARIES (Mar. 21-Apr. 19). Comfort and weakness are linked. You don't want to be so focused on maintaining a certain comfort level that you find it difficult to make decisions based on your values. Prefer comfort, but don’t require it. TAURUS (Apr. 20-May 20). Your desires intersect with the needs of another, and the result is a moment you’ll look back on and deem “perfect.” It will feel as though a plan (that you never made) is coming together. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). With your guiding planet, Mercury, now direct, you’re a master communicator. You have a variety of ways to send and receive messages, including via your thoughts. CANCER (June 22-July 22). A surge of fresh energy and curiosity puts you in a daring mood. While not trying to impress, you can’t help yourself. It’s a natural result of your confidence. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Your strong intentions are a force in the universe. When you want to spend time with someone, you find a way to make it happen no matter how busy you are or what else you have going on. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). A strange turnaround is featured. The very thing you were struggling against suddenly seems to give you power. Or maybe you’re just stronger because of the fight. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Your loved ones cherish the acceptance you lavish on them; it’s about as close to unconditional as can be. Love blossoms because everyone feels free to be exactly whom they are. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Romance is the most complex flavor of love. Sometimes it causes you to run in the opposite direction of the thing you most want. Why? No explanation will satisfy. It is what it is.

Surprise Family, Friends With A Video Greeting From Micro Green Screen Beverly Hills Publications, owned by David Silvers, has been at 291 S. La Cienega Blvd. for more than 25 years. Last March the post boxes were removed, hours the notary public is available were reduced, and the ceiling was raised to build a painted-green photographers’ cove. The Micro Green Screen Studios has been a near instant success with the room being used by photographers, directors and students alike who value the informality, location and high-end equipment. “A huge indoor studio or intimate abstract background can be simulated,” said Garson Silvers, co-founder and coowner with his father. “With the prevalence of YouTube and ease of production, anyone can be a film maker.” In addition to his real estate career with Buckeye Realty and Management, Garson Silvers has a long history in the entertainment and promotions field. “With all this equipment and people on hand, we thought it would be fun for the holidays to offer the studio for creating video greetings cards,” said Silver. “We’ve selected a few holiday-themed backgrounds and written some sample scripts, (how many ways can you say season’s greetings? I guess we’ll find out.)” The studio will be available and staffed on Sundays in November and most of December. For Christmas, Hanukkah,
Kwanzaa and New Year’s greeting, families can bring their own still or video digital image, and take advantage of the studio’s professional camera, lights and sound. Videos can be uploaded to YouTube, posted on Facebook, sent in emails and turned into 30-second videos, starting at $100. In addition to book publishing, David Silvers has always been interested in motion-picture production, especially special effects. He created his new studio, “to help out the many actors and aspiring directors that came by.” Additional partners in the company include: • Lance Davis, former ADPAC marketing executive for the L.A. Lakers. • Greg Lite, who’s worked with MC Hammer, New Edition and Bobby Brown. • Dan Nier, an award-wining actor who appeared in more than 300 productions including the recently completed The Enemies You Keep, and; • Irina Diether, partner and head of content for MGS. Diether, a screenwriter, director and producer, has worked for Showtime, BBC, A&E, HBO, Discovery Channel, PBS and Warner Brothers. For more information, and to arrange a booking, call 310963-9689.or e-mail greetings a@mgss.tv. There is free two-hour parking under tennis courts across the street.

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. CONFISCATING OUR MONEY Government at all levels in the United States is broke. That’s the true story. This “fiscal cliff” in the headlines today deals with only a tiny portion of the nation’s future. Whether we “go over” that “cliff” really won’t matter much. The fixes proposed are a teaspoonful in the Pacific Ocean. FACT: The federal government alone accrues unpaid and unfunded liabilities that exceed the total annual income (not “tax”) of ALL taxpayers earning above $60,000 per year and ALL corporate income. So much for “taxing the rich.” The actual numbers were reported this week in The Wall Street Journal by former Securities & Exchange Commission Chairman Christopher Cox and former House Ways & Means Chairman Bill Archer. They simply added up the different obligations owed by the federal government to get the totals. They also noted that this big number is NEVER reported or even discussed. All we get is bits and pieces. True, those “bits and pieces” should be enough to scare us into action, but we seem not to notice. This is part of what they wrote: “When the accrued expenses of the government's entitlement programs are counted, it becomes clear that to collect enough tax revenue just to avoid going deeper into debt would require over $8 trillion in tax collections annually. That is the total of the average annual accrued liabilities of just the two largest entitlement programs, plus the annual cash deficit. “Nothing like that $8 trillion amount is available for the IRS to target. According to the most recent tax data, all individuals filing tax returns in America and earning more than $66,193 per year have a total adjusted gross income of $5.1 trillion. In 2006, when corporate taxable income peaked before the recession, all corporations in the U.S. had total income for tax purposes of $1.6 trillion. That comes to $6.7 trillion available to tax from these individuals and corporations under existing tax laws. “In short, if the government confiscated the entire adjusted gross income of these American taxpayers, plus all of the corporate taxable income in the year before the recession, it wouldn’t be nearly enough to fund the more than $8 trillion per year in the growth of U.S. liabilities. Some public officials and pundits claim we can dig our way out through tax increases on upperincome earners, or even all taxpayers. In reality, that would amount to bailing out the Pacific Ocean with a teaspoon. Only by addressing these unsustainable spending commitments can the nation’s debt and deficit problems be solved.” Remember, President Barack Obama said yesterday there would be no spending or entitlement reductions. How will he get the money for his spending? The federal government will confiscate what you thought was yours through direct taxation and borrowing. Like home equity loans, federal borrowing takes away your equity every bit as much as tapping your bank account. The tax part —now the subject of debate—is aimed “only at the wealthy.” But everyone with the ability to think can learn that “the wealthy” don’t have that much money. Yesterday, national press agencies reported
that the holdings of individual 401(k) plans are the next target. The fact is that government at all levels has an insatiable appetite for money. In Beverly Hills, we have massive and growing unfunded pension liabilities to our City employees. The current leadership of the City Council, which does not wish to anger the public employee unions, obfuscates this issue. They also philosophically support “big government.” They attack this newspaper. They arrange for their surrogates to attack us. They call us names. They bring in “big hitters” from the political world to trash The Courier. But at no time do they ever deal with facts. They personalize everything to divert attention from the facts. The Courier’s reporting staff has uncovered the facts, via either California Public Records Act demands or simply reading public reports. All our reporters are experienced journalists. They “get it right” and we “double-source” everything we publish. That is why the people trust us. The Courier is unshakably “for the people of Beverly Hills,” not vested insiders. In the coming weeks, The Courier will report the actual numbers of what we as a city owe. We already have a pretty good idea of what that is. In the words of City Treasurer Eliot Finkel: “It is unsustainable.” Maybe it’s not worth the effort to try to keep Beverly Hills solvent while the entire nation goes into financial collapse. The Courier believes that at least we ought to try. We also believe revenues simply cannot keep up with the massively expanding pension obligations under the current system supported by Mayor Willie Brien and his partners on the council, Barry Brucker and Julian Gold. They have told us “tweak this, tweak that.” It won’t work. Nationally, we Americans returned a socialist, confiscatory administration to power bent on imposing a welfare state. Our nation will inevitably pay the price. We are only a tiny part of the nation. But Beverly Hills is our City. We can at least try to fix our tiny part. Continuing with the policies of Brien and friends makes it our fault and we will pay the consequences right here.
Rabbi Jacob Pressman THE RUNNING OF THE BULLS It has always been my belief that the annual Running of the Bulls in Pampalonia, Spain, from July 6 t0 14 was the last word in ignominious human behavior. A mob of men starts at the top of a small hilly road. A pack of wild bulls is unleashed to chase the humans down the hill. Oh what fun to see some runners bowled over and gored! This unpleasant image comes to my mind each year on midnight of Thanksgiving in the U.S.A. People line up outside popular stores to be first when some hardy storekeepers open the front doors to admit the shoppers eager for Christmas present shopping. Very much like the Spanish bull-runners, inevitably some of the first shoppers to burst through the doors are knocked over and trampled underfoot. The front-runners aim to be the first to snap up bargains for their list of recipients. It is an awesome, or should I say, gruesome example of peculiar human behavior. Others leave their shopping for the last minutes before Christmas eve and appear not to lose their friends or relatives if they are not too successful. Still others wait until the days after Christmas to buy markdowns for the same purpose, and some even put their bargain purchases away for next year. The whole charade impacts the economy. It would appear that in some instances, purveyors of good and services count on the slim period between Thanksgiving and Christmas for at least half of their annual revenue. Because both Christmas and Hanukkah fall in December, Hanukkah, one of the minor holidays, has assumed more major proportions in Jewish homes. I still remember fondly how my paternal grandfather, Chaim, would give each of his many grandchildren a dime or two in a good economy, and we were very excited and grateful. Well, whatever the custom, I wish for all the children a meaningful and happy yearend celebration and a hap-haphappy New Year, and watch out for those bulls!
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR As Recreation and Parks commissioners, and commission liaisons for the Roxbury Park master plan, we were delighted to see the cover of the current Community Services brochure to be mailed to all Beverly Hills residents featuring a rendering of the proposed Roxbury Park Community Center. Although the process of getting to this point was not always the easiest, with hard work from our Community Services staff, resident input, and guidance from the City Council, we now have a design that should make everyone in our community proud. We have addressed the needs of residents and the community at large and designed a wonderful space we should be able to enjoy for many years to come. It is a Community Center that truly will service the needs of all of us. The liaison committee is now reviewing plans for the Roxbury Park upgrades to the drainage system that has plagued the multiuse sports fields for years, the playground area where new equipment is being proposed, and construction of a new field restroom. With continued input of the community, staff and the City Council, we should be able to achieve a result we can all be proud of. Alan Block and Simone Friedman ****** On the evening of Nov. 13, the Beverly Hills City Council voted against American energy independence. The oil company which has been successfully drilling in the 400 south block between Rodeo and Robertson applied for a permit for two new wells in this area. These may or may not enhance production but they would replace low production wells. One council member kept looking for nits and found two that occurred this April; a leak and a valve problem. There was no discussion of leak size nor valve issue. I am only guessing but both probably they are at the drill site which is in Los Angeles. There have never been any significant environmental issues at this site. This is another case in which local government has not listened to resident desires for royalty income and instead thrown us under the bus. Environmental ideology has superseded common sense. Paul Bernstein
