Local Philanthropists Save The Big Cats By Marla Schevker Stephanie Dolrenry lives in a three-story tree house in Kenya outside Amboeseli National Park. Equipped with electricity, a living room and her own bedroom, Dolrenry specifically noted that the views are spectacular, “you can see forever; it’s beautiful,” she says. Dolrenry main goal in life is working to save the lions in Kenya. She estimated that there are about 1,800 lions left in all of Kenya. Dolrenry works as the biology director for Lion Guardians, an organization started in January 2007 that got native Masai warriors involved in protecting, tracking and learning about the Kenyan lions. The Lion Guardians work in unprotected areas to collect data

and protect the lions. Masai warriors once hunted the lions for sport and for retaliation when livestock was killed. When Dolrenry first began working in Kenya, she found they were “extremely talented” at tracking the lions. It was these warriors she ultimately hired as the first Lion Guardians. When they first started working with Dolrenry, she said 98 percent of them, ages 19 to 31, had never been to school in their lives. “(I had to) teach them how to hold a pencil and write their names,” Dolrenry said. “We designed data sheets mostly focused on using pictures and taught (the Guardians) how to fill them out.” She also gives them cell phones and GPS units and

Inaugural Carbon Monoxide Run Held By Krystal Leach de Amante One Beverly Hills resident and former intern at The Courier transformed her tragic experience into a fun, exciting way to educate others about the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning. UC Santa Barbara sophomore Nikkie Sedaghat hosted the inaugural Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Awareness run this Thanksgiving in Beverly Hills. Only a year ago she encountered a life-threatening experience during her Thanksgiving visit home from school. Because it was cold outside, Sedaghat asked her mother to turn on the heater in the guest-

house she was staying in before going out with friends. Feeling a little under the weather upon her return, she decided to take some cold medicine. Sedaghat soon found herself drifting off to sleep. “I thought it was the cold medicine but it was really the carbon monoxide,” she recalled. “My mom and I had plans to go shopping for black Friday. She came into my room and saw I was unconscious–that’s when she called an ambulance. Carbon monoxide was leaking from the heater in my room.” Sedaghat was in a coma for 35 days and did not experi-

ence a full recovery from the incident until late summer this year. Sedaghat is utilizing the experience as an effective tool to raise awareness and maybe even save a few lives in the process. “This is not just a run to burn off some calories before eating that big (Thanksgiving Day) meal, now it’s a run for (becoming) educated about a topic most people don’t know about,” said admitted. “You can save someone’s life by simply knowing about the dangers of carbon monoxide.” Sedaghat hopes her story (see ‘CARBON MONOXIDE,’ page 14)

LEARNING THROUGH FUN—Pictured from left: student Liam Kozak Spiegelman, BHHS tutor Jason Friedman, student Jaden Loya-Hoepker and tutor Stephanie Sege at the Beverly Hills Academic Afterschool Tutoring Program in the Beverly Vista cafeteria last week.

Tutoring Program Finds New Home By Marla Schevker Over the summer, the BHUSD tutoring program found a new home with the City of Beverly Hills Community Services Department. During the first semester, Program Supervisor Adrienne Weise said there were 70 K-8 students who participated, 26 at Horace Mann on Tuesdays and 44 at Beverly Vista on Thursdays. Each student was

provided with a personal tutor, usually a Beverly High student, Rotary member or anyone else interested in volunteering. “On Thursday alone we had about 10 kids on the wait list and on Tuesday we had about eight,” Weise said. “As I gradually brought in more tutors we were able to take kids off the waitlist.” The tutoring program costs $15 a session. Registration for

the winter session begins on Dec 6 for residents and Dec. 13 for nonresidents. Parents can register online at www.beverlyhills.org/BHRegOnline. Volunteer tutors are always welcome. For more information on how to become a volunteer tutor contact Adrienne at adriennetutor@gmail.com or call 310-285-6810. A one- or two hour a week commitment is requested.

Gran Fondo Returning In 2012 The tradition of Gran Fondo, the Italian-inspired cycling event, is returning to Beverly Hills next June 10. Although the start and end points have not yet been determined, Gran Fondo USA Founder Matteo Gerevini told the City Council Holiday and Special Event Liaisons, Mayor Barry Brucker and Councilwoman LIli Bosse, he hoped it could start again on Rodeo Drive and end on Crescent Drive. City staff and Gran Fondo USA plan to work out the logistical kinks and if these two streets won’t work, they will find another path for the race.

The 2011 Gran Fondo had 1,248 registrants with 30 participants from Beverly Hills. Riders traveled from all over California but also came from other states and countries including Italy, Korea, France, Japan and South Africa. The first event cost approximately $13,800 with about an $8,000 sponsorship from the Conference and Visitors Bureau (CVB). This year, Gran Fondo estimates the event costing about $25,200. Respectful

of Da Vinci’s lineage, Mara and Massimo preserved the Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin booth for diners in the mezzanine area. “Private parties are popular there,” informs Mara, whose sexy voice seduces you. Curious as she was about Beverly Hills, we explained that the city was a bunch of bean fields in 1900 until oil man Burton Green developed the land and named it Beverly Hills after Beverly Farms, Massachusetts.

T

The e-mail is signed Mara

Acampo, and the message arouses our interest. We call. A chat or two, and we’re charmed. What is it about our Italian brothers and sisters? Were they born on the Planet of Charm? So it is with Mara Acampo of Milan and her Florentine husband, chef Massimo Denardo, who boasts a Sicilian heritage, and has been cooking since age 15. Mara and Massimo are the attractive and hard-working couple who opened their Sfixio restaurant in Beverly Hills several months ago. Odd name, yes. We’ll explain shortly.

“N

o freezer!” announced Mara with a proud lilt in her voice, and who emailed us at the suggestion of Bradley Tuck. No freezer? Is this possible? She hears that we like Italian food. Well, yes. Don’t we all? Having discovered and dined as we have from time to time at Amici Brentwood, Trattoria Amici in West Hollywood, e. baldi in Beverly Hills, Divino and Osteria Latini in Brentwood, Giorgio Baldi in Santa Monica, et alia, we long ago joined the Italian League of Like. Nor are we alone. Italian eateries keep opening with the crowds pursuing them. Folks out there can’t have enough of healthy Italian dishes.

M

oreover, what we love about Italians is their particularness, if there is such a word. They argue: “Listen, you pazzo, the San Marzano tomatoes are better for the spaghetti sauce.” No, counters a friend, and carries on about his choices. Still another disagrees. Someone shouts, “Basta!” Finally. Page 6 | December 2, 2011

“In August, Massimo and I

took over the Da Vinci space for Sfixio. Why Sfixio? This says ‘on a whim’,” said Mara, a realtor with Keller-Williams. “We figured opening a new restaurant in Beverly Hills was a whim, with our goal of pleasing people who love good food.”

I

f you’re in the dark about Hollywood’s culinary territory, Da Vinci dates to 1979, and was the late-night hangout for the Rat Pack that included Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, who pizza’d, pasta’d, parmigiana’d, and boozed until the wee hours. Didn’t Frank, now and then, take over the Da Vinci kitchen and serve his al dente pasta pomodoro to Shirley MacLaine, the only dame invited to be a Rat Packer, others being Sammy Davis, Jr., Peter Lawford, Joey Bishop. Frank referred to his Rat Pack as “the clan,” others joked it was “a secret society.”

F

rank’s time-worn philosophy about life was “whatever gets you through the night.” What worked for Frank? Jack Daniels whiskey from Tennessee and his pasta. A gent, forever remembering members of the press, he gifted us with a portable radio one Christmas. We wrote a note of thanks. Our thank you was never received. He called our office, and asked what happened to our manners. We wrote again. All the same, the following Christmas a Frank Sinatra signature n e c k t i e arrived. Special delivery thanks w e r e dropped in the mail.

Fashion News & Notes Fashion Financials PRADA-Gains in it’s leather goods division and a strong performance in the Asia Pacific region helped Prada SpA report a jump in earnings and revenues in the nine months ended Oct. 31. Net profits surged 75 percent to 273.2 million euros, or $385.2 million, compared with 156.5 million euros, or $205 million, in the same period last year. TIFFANY-Tiffany & Co.’s thirdquarter profits shot up 63 percent and topped analyst estimates, but the jeweler also sounded some note of caution given recent sales weakness

in Europe and in the eastern part of the U.S. Earnings rose to $89.7 million, or 70 cents a diluted share, from $55.1 million, or 43 cents, a year earlier. The quarter’s take came in 9 cents ahead of Wall Street’s expectations. NEIMAN MARCUS-Neiman Marcus Inc. practically doubled its profits during its first quarter ended Oct. 29, but executives kept their cool, citing the potential impact of stock market gyrations and troubled economies around the world. François Lesage Dies at 82 François Lesage, the fabled embroidery designer who executed a vast tapestry of commissions for over half a century’s worth of grand couturiers and young designers, has died in Paris at the age of 82, a spokeswoman for Chanel said. Over his long career, Lesage came to be regarded as the king of his trade, collaborating with everyone from Cristobal Balenciaga to Christian Lacroix and Jason Wu. Only last week, the Ministry of Culture awarded him the

honorary distinction of Maître d’Art (Master of Art, in English). Acknowledging in a speech that Lesage’s award was long overdue, France’s Culture Minister Frédéric Mitterrand quoted Karl Lagerfeld: “I cannot imagine fashion without embroidery, embroidery without Monsieur Lesage.” WWD Harry Winston Launches Its Largest Collection “If I could, I would attach the diamonds directly onto a woman’s skin.” Harry Winston’s famous

words continue to reverberate through the halls of the Fifth Avenue jewelry house that he founded in 1932, and they particularly informed its new collection, Ultimate Adornments. The lineup of 40 one-of-a-kind diamond and platinum necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings — the largest single collection in Winston’s history — is inspired by the idea of dressing a woman in diamonds. re-installed. The installation will then be followed by the five boardmembers Electing the new president and vice president. Outgoing boardmember Fenton said he had a good run from 20072011 with accomplishments in helping the district achieve its highest financial reserves, hiring the superintendent of the state’s #1 school district, and revamping the food service department, cheating, dress codes and resident verification policies. “In the last four years, we have gone from good to great. We've moved the needle in a big way,” he said. “I've learned that sometimes it really does take controversy to effect positive change. We are no longer swimming in mediocrity. We have stability, continuity and the will to be the best.” Fenton said that during this time the board put a plan in place that is working, “Everything is increasing from test scores, to financial reserves to resident enrollment to employee morale." Lurie is finishing an eight-year term on the Board of Education. “It has been an honor to have served on the school board for the last eight years and I want to thank this community for placing their faith in me,” she confided. “I am enormously proud of much of the work we have done.” Lurie mentioned that despite difference of opinions between she and fellow board members over the years, they shared a common interest.

December 2, 2011 | Page 9

“At times we have had our differences, but, at the end of the day, it’s all about the students----and they are inspirational. I will always hold our schools and children near and dear to my heart,” she said. Current Board President Lisa Korbatov said she bids both Fenton and Lurie a fond farewell and hopes they will continue to stay involved and engaged in the community. Korbatov said: “I would say more than not, I tended to agree philosophically with the ideas and the direction that Steven espoused more so than Mrs. Lurie, but I respected our differences of opinion and I always appreciated when we didn’t agree.” Korbatov mentioned she looks forward to continue working with reelected board member Goldberg. “I’m overjoyed that Goldberg is coming back and he came in on a landslide--I think it’s numbers that no one’s ever seen in a school board election.” Korbatov said due to the one-year rotation of board president, she is hoping that Goldberg will step into the position. “It’s my hope Dr. Goldberg will become president and Jacob Manaster would become vice president,” she explained. Korbatov concluded that she is hopeful of building friendship and camaraderie with new boardmembers Margo and Hall. “I’m looking forward to the new dynamic,” she added. “I think they’re both intelligent and thoughtful men and their hearts are in the right place, so I think we’re going to do just fine.”

KASSEL (Continued from page 5)

son’s disease left her immobile but barely impeded her philanthropic work and widened the scope of objectives. Kassel and Wilkerson’s everlasting bond, extended well past matrimonial ties. Together they wove monumental changes in the fabric of society. While standing dutifully by his wife’s side, Kassel gained first-hand experience about the value of helping people surmount opposition. The couple founded the Tichi Wilkerson Kassel Movement Therapy Foundation and created an exercising machine (Flexiciser) with the intent of promoting better health amongst the immobile community. The foundation placed machines in 24 veterans homes and hospitals. The couple’s financial contributions also funded medical research for the debilitating disease. With a background in providing security to celebrities, political officials and other VIPs, Kassel already served an honorable career of shielding others from harm. In 1999, after completing all the necessary requirements (background check, medical exam, firearms test, and psychological screening), he took a sworn oath of allegiance as a certified reserve peace officer for the Culver City Police Department to “support and defend”. “The reserve job didn’t pay, but I just wanted to put in time to be helpful to the department,” Kassel added. Reserve officers typically serve as budgetary buffers, alleviating police departments from paying costly overtime. As a dedicated supporter of fellow peace officers, Kassel became a crusader for the families of fallen law enforcement officers and the community children they served. Unanimously elected by the Board of Directors of the L.A. Police Protective League, he served as President and CEO of their non-profit Eagle and Badge Foundation. Aware of Kassel and Wilkerson’s celebrity and political affiliations, fellow board members later enlisted his professional assistance in fundraising. Kassel had already begun organizing a fundraising event for Tichi’s foundation, where her life-long friend Julio Iglesias agreed to perform free of charge. “Arthur was going to do a fundraiser and they (Eagle & Badge) asked for help,” said Eagle & Badge Board Member David Lafaille. The couple agreed to combine their collective influence toward the betterment of both foundations, resulting in the dually hosted 2002 “To Pro-

tect and To Serve Gala”. The star-studded event not only featured Iglesias live in concert but also was attended by Chuck Norris, Saquille O’Neal, Sylvester Stallone and others. All proceeds were equally distributed amongst the two foundations. “Two of the great causes Arthur is dedicated to are law enforcement and Parkinson’s,” said former Governor Gray Davis. “Over a period of time he has trained (Eagle & Badge) so that they now assist in the fundraising planning, table selling and so forth,” Lafaille said. Kassel’s ability to garner substantial support of influential people to worthy causes, coupled with his security expertise lead to a distinctive assignment at the State of California Department of Mental Health, as Chief of Law Enforcement Services and special assistant to the department’s director. “Arthur had an important, unique set of skills which helped establish key relationships in implementing important programs,” said retired Director of the State’s Dept. of Mental Health Dr. Steve Mayberg. “He put in lots of hours, utilizing his own resources, never submitting one travel or expense report in return.” Mayberg explained how Kassel tirelessly worked toward developing opportunities to expand mental heath services to the homeless. During Kassel’s 13-year service at the Dept. of Mental Health, he helped raise $3.9 million to construct The Bell Shelter, “the largest homeless shelter west of the Mississippi.” Former U.S. Marine and U.S. 9TH Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Harry Pregerson helped convert the defunct 40,000 square foot U.S. Army Air Base hanger into the Bell Shelter. “Arthur is a stalwart when it comes to supporting, working with causes that involve homeless veterans,” the judge noted. “He was a tremendous help with the Bell Shelter.” When Kassel retired from his state job in May, he never slowed his personal mission of helping others. In fact, the Black American Political Association honored him as health advocate of the year. Safe Passages, an organization dedicated to helping battered women and their children, recently requested he serve as a Special Advisory Board Member. “We need Arthur’s wisdom and expertise working with corporate entities and law enforcement throughout the greater Los Angeles area,” said Safe Passages founder Trish Steele. Kassel admitted that he remains dedicated to continuing the legacy his late wife left behind---giving a voice to the voiceless.

cerns about increased traffic flow, safety, and the potential release of hazardous materials unleashed into the air from digging several feet deeper to accommodate the commercial parking level. The proposed parking structure would consist of an additional one or two levels being added to the already approved one-level, 100 space subterranean structure set at the corner of Roberston and Charleville Boulevards. “Unfortunately, I’ve already heard a lot of concerns,” Mirisch said. “Horace Mann is in most need of money. As a future Horace Mann parent, I’m happy with what (the already ap-

proved construction they) there are going to be doing.” Mirisch explained one of the reasons why there are a bunch of massage parlors and nail salons surrounding the school is because there is inadequate parking to attract other kinds of businesses to the community. Providing more commercial parking will lure in more attractive and respectable businesses thus creating a more well-rounded neighborhood. Parents brought up the concerns of security and not know who would be parking in the underground structure and having direct access to their children. “We’re looking at all kinds of new technologies like automatic license readers, which will be available in all

the City’s parking structures eventually,” Mirisch informed the group of parents. Goldberg informed the group that the Board of Education is the final arbitrator of what happens at the school sites. “There is no plan to put additional space, other than the 100 parking spots underneath this campus,” Goldberg said. “We are moving forward, if the City’s interested in putting a plan, we will take that input, we will not do so behind closed doors–Horace Mann will be involved.”

BERGER (Continued from page 4)

Originally launched in 2002, the search engine last year generated more than 3.3 million unique hits from some 24,000 philanthropists and foundations. It provides donation tips; top10 and bottom-10 lists which rank efficient and inefficient organizations in a number of categories; and annually conducts a national study to determine and analyze statistical differences that may exist in the financial practices of charities located in different metropolitan markets. The Charity Navigator rating system bases its evaluations in two broad areas — financial health and accountability/transparency. Based on how the charity rates in each of the two areas, it is assigned an overall rating, ranging from zero to four stars. It encourages donors to consider supporting charities which meet six particular criteria: (1) are they able to communicate whom they are and what they do; (2) define short-term and long-term goals; (3) ability to state progress made (or being made) toward its goal; (4) programs which make sense to the donor; (5) trustworthiness; and (6) have programs the donors feel they can make a long-term commitment to. Berger joined Charity Navigator in 2008 after 30-years working in the charitable non-profit sector. He has held leadership positions at a variety of human service and health care agencies, serving as COO of Jawonio, director of operations at Professional Service Centers for the Handicapped, and president/CEO of The Floating Hospital. “Selecting a worthy charity or cause is such a critical goal for the philanthropic community, which is so important to an area like Beverly Hills,” he stated. “What Charity Navigator (www.charitynaviga-tor.org) does is to give independent evaluation and totally objective information about how one charity operates compared to its peers.”

She also recommends going to sleep with the window open, not sleeping with gas heaters on and having fuel-burning appliances inspected by a trained professional once a year. “It’s something so easy but a lot of people don’t know about it. It’s important to raise awareness,” she commented. Bella Shpealfogel and her husband along with their two small children participated in the run. “I wouldn’t have known about this issue if it weren’t for Nikki,” she said. “Having children in the home, it’s important to know about the dangers of carbon monoxide. Sedaghat garnered support from local businesses (The Nosh and Starbucks) to donate food and sponsorship for the four-mile run. She said her main focus this year is to get people involved and every year afterwards to start raising funds toward increasing awareness. “Every year we’re expecting more and more people. Hopefully this is something that’s going to develop over the years,” she concluded.

Also on the program are Christmas Day by Gustav Holst, A Boy Was Born by Benjamin Britten, selections from Felix Mendelssohn’s Christus, and Break Forth O Beauteous Heavenly Light by J.S. Bach. HMC will also present music celebrating Chanukah. “From our founding in 1995, our commitment to reach out to the community has played a major role in our concert pro-

gramming,” said HMC President Lyndia Lowy. “So we always include works that speak to music lovers regardless of their faith or ethnicity. Music is the great unifier. And it seems especially important that a concert celebrating the spirit of the holiday season should reflect this.” The concert’s Carol SingAlong finale will be accompanied by an ensemble of brass players led by local trumpeter Rob Schaer. The concert marks the chorale’s return to the historic Beverly Hills Presbyterian Church after many years. A dessert reception will follow the concert. Tickets, $20 and $15 for students and seniors, are available online or at the door. For more information, call 323-960-4349 or visit the chorale’s website, www.hollywoodmasterchorale.org. TASTE (Continued from page 1)

The Courier. The main objection of City hoteliers, restauranteurs and other City businesses was Best's insistence on subordinating Beverly Hills to other cities and treating Beverly Hills as "just another venue." Beverly Hills was one of three locations for The LA Times event and failed to attract much traffic. Best told council liaisons Mayor Barry Brucker and Councilwoman Lili Bosse the event failed in part from lack of community support. He cited articles in The Courier as a reason for the “bad taste” in residents’ mouths. "We learned that we cannot get

trained them on how to read, write, use GPS and use radio telemetry. Dolrenry said the data sheets cover everything from community work to livestock to spoor counts. Because the Guardians track spoors, or animal tracks in the dirt, Dolrenry has three years of predator and prep population fluctuations. “Wildlife biologists work very hard to get that kind of data,” Dolrenry said. “The really traditional guys do it every week and they love it.” Dolrenry works on the biol-

community support for an event like this in Beverly Hills without The Courier," he had earlier told Courier Associate Publisher Marcia Hobbs. Bosse was critical of the 2011 The LA Times Taste events. She referred to results gathered by the Conference and Visitors Bureau from businesses around the City. According to the report, Maison 140 said they had about 65 percent weekend occupancy, “which was a drop from last year.” The Beverly Hilton said the hotel was nearly full with a group, so occupancy was very high but that could not be attributed to The LA Times Taste. The Beverly Hills Education Foundation was supposed to share in the revenues from the event,

ogy side of the program, collaring lions, tracking them, seeing what they are eating. Director Leela Hazzah works to understand the community’s motivations—why people are killing the lions. Hazzah has her Ph.D while Dolrenry will be defending hers in a few months at the University of Madison, Wisc. The program began in 2007 with funding from Los Angeles resident Bruce Ludwig, who had recently bought a ranch in Kenya and was looking to get involved in the community. About six months ago, New Pacific Realty Principal and Beverly Hills resident David Margulies got in-

Shame–Sexuality Unleashed Jerry Cutler on Film Immediately following the screening of Shame, I had a strong desire for a cigarette….and, I don’t smoke! As I watched the film I felt that had Will H. Hays seen it, he would have suffered a massive heart attack. Hays, a Presbyterian Elder, was hired to govern productions from 1930 to 1968 when the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) took over his role and became more lenient. Leniency, my friends, is in the eye of the director whose name, Steve McQueen, is purely coincidental to the late great movie star. A lot of the footage is shot in the dreary underground subways of New York, which I took for a metaphor of Michael Fassbinder’s (Brandon) sexual depravity. This compulsive sexual machine finds many partners to satisfy his cravings without committing himself to any of his paramours as his sex drive is in high gear with no emotional attachment. McQueen leaves nothing to the imagination and I found many of those scenes to be much too vivid and gratuitous. Brandon’s computers are filled with sex acts bringing on the need to relieve himself when he views them. As he is in the nude many times during the film, the producers lucked out by signing Fassbinder who

not only looks good but meets the physical challenges required for the part. Cissy, (Carey Mulligan) Brandon’s sister, shows up at his apartment and moves in over Brandon’s objections. Sexually, Cissy is no shrinking violet and her presence just adds to Brandon’s frustrations. They talk about their dysfunctional upbringing but fail to mend their schism. An added ingredient to the kettle of brew, is a hint their relationship at one time was incestuous. Cissy, a chanteuse, gets a job in a club and Brandon and his boss attend. She sings New York, New York as more of a dirge than an up tempo song. During the song, McQueen’s camera captures Cissy’s desperation and Brandon’s inner turmoil. Fassbinder is wonderful as the sullen addict whose addiction has overtaken his life. Mulligan, who starred opposite Ryan Gosling in Drive, displays a discreet sexuality that accentuates her vulnerability. As an (see ‘SHAME,’ page 21)

which is why they supported it. Bosse reported Best has not paid anything yet to BHEF. Best said although BHEF had only sold 17 tickets, which was indicative of the lack of community support, he would pay them between $28,000 and $30,000. No date was given for BHEF to expect the payment. As Bosse went through her list of concerns, Best became agitated. “I don’t know why you’re so negative on this event,” Best said to Bosse. “I just want to say I didn’t get any sponsorship from the City, I got no cooperation from the local press, I got no cooperation from everyone and I still went out and put my flag in the sand.” Bosse told him she did not treat this issue any differently from

volved as well, not only donating money but also visiting the program in Kenya. Both serve on the National Geographic Society board. Dolrenry estimated the program costs about $150,000 a year. Local tour operators cover almost all of the guardian’s salaries and the program also welcomes private donations. The program has so far been successful. The Lion Guardian program is currently located in three areas of Kenya and is “in the middle of expanding,” Dolrenry said. Currently there are 29 lion guardians protecting 3,500 KM2 of lion habitat and attenuating conflict between their communities and livestock. In 2010 alone, lion guardians stopped 44 lion hunting parties by either dissuading angry warriors or by requesting further assistance from the local game scouts or the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS). Since the beginning of the program in 2007, there have been more than 58 lions killed in neighboring areas where there was no active Lion Guardian program while only two lions were killed (for political reasons) in lion guardian areas during the same period. Dolrenry said she was drawn to wildlife preservation from an early age and currently has no intention of leaving Kenya. “Everything’s disappearing and you have to do what you can to stop that, to turn it around,” Dolrenry said. “It might be possible, it might not be possible, but you have to try. We’re in the front lines. Lions are disappearing rapidly and no one realizes how fragile the lion population is across Africa. It could be gone in our lifetimes. We need to do all that we can and that means our lives.” For more information on the Lion Guardians visit www.lionconservation.org.

the way she treats others. “This is not a personal anything,” Bosse said. “This is what I do with everything that has to do with the City. I do my homework.” Best proposed three days over Labor Day Weekend for the 2012 Taste, which would again be sponsored by The LA Times as part of a multi-city event. Friday night would be a tailgate night held at USC to kick off the 2012 college football season. He proposed an event at Greystone Mansion and a picnic at 9900 Wilshire. Lastly, there will be an event at or near The LA Times building promoting downtown restaurants. Despite the event's flop, Brucker said he felt the Taste events were beneficial for the City. "The advantages to the City of drawing thousands of new guests to our City to support our hotels, shops and restaurants along with their generous donation to BHEF on an otherwise slow Labor Day

weekend could have been a winner,” Brucker said. Bosse said she could only support the Taste of Beverly Hills if it was like the 90210 event two years ago, which was exclusively in Beverly Hills. Best said, because of his partnership with The LA Times, there would have to be other events for it to make fiscal sense. The Courier was the exclusive media sponsor of 90210 and heavily promoted the event, which sold out. The Times held its own competing event that weekend at Paramount Studios, which was not considered successful. The Beverly Hills event was headed by then-Mayor Jimmy Delshad who worked tirelessly with City and Courier staff to promote it. Best changed the format when he teamed up with The Times and stripped Beverly Hills of its exclusivity. Best, said at this point he had no interest in bringing the event back for a third time.

"tot yard" that was a key component of the project. Without the tot yard, the center cannot host a pre-school, which was one of its goals. The matter now goes back to the Council at next Tuesday's public session. City hall received the bids Nov. 18, but most councilmembers knew nothing about them until 10 minutes before Deputy City Manager Cheryl Friedling's assistant, Therese Kosterman, issued a public press release this past Tuesday. Councilmembers were given no time to go over the material or even digest it before the news went public. Friedling and Kosterman, acting under city manager Jeff Kolin, announced a council discussion of the matter for Dec. 19 without consulting the city council. They were forced to send out a correcting press release after councilmembers moved the matter to Dec. 6. Reform councilmember Lili Bosse protested that neither bids nor the staff-generated cuts were provided to the council. After many emails, Bosse finally was given the proposals, which lacked specificity about the cost of various elements of the proposed plan. "This is a huge project for

the City," Bosse told The Courier. "I do not understand why we were not given detailed breakdowns so we could consider what parts to keep and what parts to remove." Initially, City workers only told her to find the bids on the internet despite her request for paper copies. "It's how I work," said the former head of the Planning Commission. She finally tracked them down at the Beverly Hills Public Library. “I am disappointed decisions that are community based, such as what items should be removed or added, were not provided in a public open hearing discussion such as a council meeting or the town hall meeting that was promised to the residents,” Bosse said. The City restricts bidding to those contractors who are "prequalified," which means in practice that most contractors never bid on city projects. All three prequalified contractors turned in bids by the Nov. 18 deadline. The lowest bid was from W.E. O’Neil Construction at $14.4 million. However, Kolin added additional administration, contingency and other fees calculated by the staff, bringing the total to $16.8 million. That amount exceeds the approved budget of $14.7 million. According to the bid

analysis, the $2.4 million in additional costs is made up of construction administration fees, construction contingency, geotech testing and inspection fees, furniture and library stacks, relocation costs, HVAC, kitchen equipment, permits and IT/AV equipment. The O’Neil bid omitted the climbing wall at $180,000 and the tot lot for the preschool, valued at $80,000. Both items were removed by staff without consultation with the council. Bosse only learned the climbing wall and tot lot were stripped after examining the plans herself. She also protested there were many questions about the project that had not been fully vetted with the community or the council, such as the where the extra $2.4 million cost, added by city manager Jeff Kolin, came from or the added cost of programming and staff for the new facility. Mayor Barry Brucker said he was going to recommend the council hold a community meeting in early January, where all five councilmembers will be in attendance, to receive citizen comment and discuss possibly reductions to the project scope. He said besides budget considerations, there were some “hot button” concerns including the proposed climbing wall, basketball gym and

kitchen. Brucker said he would be open-minded to scale back on certain items but he clung to many of the major components that have drawn the most objections from residents. “We have to be cautious when people say, ‘eliminate the kitchen or the gym or the tot lot (pre-school playground),’” Brucker said. “Some things you can’t fully eliminate. You can’t eliminate a kitchen in the community center due to health code regulations, which mandate certain kitchen amenities when servicing some of our active adult programs. “Likewise, if you eliminate the preschool playground you’d have to eliminate the whole pre-school program. Maybe an option (with the gym) is to scale back the basketball to a multipurpose room or assembly hall similar to what we have presently. “These are all options that will go into consideration for achieving our budget goals and serving the community with a compatible and complimentary facility.” Brucker said he would ask Recreation and Parks liaisons Vice Mayor Willie Brien and Councilmember Julian Gold to meet with Staff, architects, Commissioners and community members to evaluate alternatives, revisions or modifications to the park plan.

December 2, 2011 | Page 21 “Any recommendation from the Liaison will be presented to the entire Council in an open forum where the public will again be invited to offer their input before any direction or vote is taken by the full Council in Open Session” Brucker said. The Roxbury Park project is on the City Council agenda for its Dec. 6 meeting at 7 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers.

Education Partner.

From the Publisher CLIF SMITH KUDOS TO STEVEN FENTON When The Courier endorsed Steven Fenton for a spot on the Beverly Hills Unified School District Board of Education four years ago, we had a candid talk. Both he and The Courier were dedicated to the success of BHUSD. Neither wanted to criticize or publicize problems at our school district. The problem was the problems—they had become so bad that they had to be addressed publicly. Many of us had tried for years to give behind-the-scenes help, but we were all rejected by the then-board majority of “the old guard.” They knew better and who were we to criticize? Sweep it under the rug and say nothing. Not acceptable! Fenton, whose father Frank had guided the district through serious financial and labor problems, knew things had to change. We knew enough from the students who joined our editorial boards, information our reporters gathered, the dismissive attitudes of school administrators (one convicted, another going to trial), revolving door personnel, and most of all, dismal standardized test scores. We tried to get the message across subtly by simply publishing the scores of BHUSD students along with top-performing districts such as San Marino and Palos Verdes, as well as Culver City and Santa Monica. We hoped the huge disparities between our students and those of other well-to-do districts would raise the red flag. It didn’t. The leadership was intransigent. “Go along to get along. Say nothing.” We couldn't even excuse our own district’s performance as that of a “poor urban school district,” which is what you hear from a lot of poorly performing districts. The problems had to be brought into the open. We did that. Fenton and his new colleague Brian Goldberg did that, too. Fenton and Goldberg fought the old guard unsuccessfully for two years until that precious “third vote” arrived in the form of current Board President Lisa Korbatov and Jake Manaster. Fenton’s heritage was as a member of the City’s establishment. Fenton was named president. Immediately, principals were replaced, investigations into wrongdoing commenced, and a culture of responsibility began. That triggered the wrath of the old guard, who felt betrayed by one of their own. “Friends” no longer spoke; they asked: “What’s wrong with Steven?” Answer: nothing. When Steven passed the baton to Korbatov last year, the Board faced a bitter and hostile former majority, now rejected. Instead of pandering to failed policies of the past, they continued improving the staff. They took on the Karen Christiansen fiasco. The old guard wanted to pay her $4 million or so to get her to go away, but the new majority said, “no way.” After the district hired some of the most successful attorneys in the country, a major corporate supplier just paid the district $5 million to settle its claims. The new board brought stability to the schools, defended Beverly High against the ravishes of the Metropolitan Transit Authority and finally, hired the superintendent of the #1 performing school district in California. All the while, they suffered attacks, gossip and back-biting. “You’re spending too much on lawyers.” (The expensive lawyers won and collected for the district much, much more than they cost.) MTA is fighting us tooth-and-nail but the district is well-prepared to defend Beverly High. The district’s standardized test scores just hit an historic all-time high and headed even higher. Even the cafeteria now serves good food the students like–and buy. All the while, the attacks never ceased. Well, Steven Fenton deserves a huge “well done” from the community. His colleagues in arms–Goldberg, Korbatov and Manaster–remain and they have much left to do. But so much has already been done and Fenton deserves his share of the credit. This team really has done an outstanding job. The Courier welcomes “Letters to the Editor.” Please email to myopinion@bhcourier.com; fax to 310-271-5118; or mail to The Courier, 8440 Wilshire Blvd., Beverly Hills CA 90211

LETTER It should come as no surprise the Roxbury Park project cannot be built for the budgeted amount of $14 million. I said the same thing three years ago, but no one would listen. Now Mayor Barry Brucker will eliminate the planned seniors’ climbing wall (which no one wanted), along with and a few other unnecessary things that the mayor and Drs. Brian and Gold feel we can do without and try again. After they scale back this misguided project to eliminate some useless features, they will then proceed to build facility rooms at the park for $14 million so they can go into the business of renting out the rooms to generate revenue. However, there is no way these rentals will generate enough revenue after paying operating expenses to allow a reasonable return to the City on the $14 million investment, or recovery of that investment. The new facility rooms will, over time, depreciate in function and value and eventually have to be rebuilt again, but they are putting in a satellite library (When we can’t even keep the main library open all year and have cut hours). A private developer has the option of selling a building before it becomes too old and obsolete to generate revenue, but that option (selling) is not available to the City. The bottom line for this misguided venture is nothing but red ink. Fund accounting, which is the term given to the way governments keep their books, does not even contemplate the concept of “net income” or “net loss” as a business would. In the world of government accounting, the entire cost of the capital investment (in this case $14 million) is deemed an expense in the year it is spent. That cost is not apportioned to offset future revenue, as depreciation is under generally accepted accounting principles applicable to normal private sector businesses. So, after taking the big loss in the year of construction, it is made to appear like nothing but profit thereafter. Moreover, the costs of maintenance, insurance and other expenses incurred in later years will probably be charged to the public park and not against the “business” of renting out the building for non-park uses. Even worse, the City will not even show a “loss” for the cost of the project since the funds were set aside out of unnamed revenues in past years to be used for “capital improvements”, which do not even count as losses. Thus, we are led to believe the cost of the project is free, and the future revenue is all a windfall to the City. Nothing could be further from the truth. Any qualified non-government accountant could demonstrate

Rabbi Jacob Pressman THOUGHTS DURING MACY’S THANKSGIVING DAY PARADE In 1912, Macy’s Department Store was owned by two brothers: Nathan and Isidor Strauss, famed for their philanthropies. That year they and their wives were touring Europe, when Nathan, an ardent Zionist, said: “Let’s go to Palestine before we sail home, and visit the health and welfare centers we have endowed.” After a week, Isidor said: “Let’s leave. We might miss the ship we are taking home.” Nathan was reluctant to leave because he was moved by the hardship the new immigrants to Palestine were suffering. He told Isidor: “We have the means to help. We can’t turn our backs on our people.” Isidor left and Nathan continued contributing huge sums of money, establishing health, education, and social welfare programs. He even financed the establishment of a new city on the coast, which the people gratefully named Netanya in his honor. Nathan waited to the last minute to get to London to join Isidor on the ship, but found the ship had already left the port on its maiden voyage. It was the most famous ship ever, called the Titanic. The realization that he had so narrowly escaped death dominated the rest of Nathan’s life and drove him to intensify his philanthropies to the end. His son, Nathan Jr., attended Princeton and then Heidelberg University in Germany, where he met a student named Otto Frank. He got Otto a job back at Macy’s. However, Otto’s father died, and he went back to Germany, fought in World War I but by World War II was obliged to hide with his family in a secret attic in a house in Amsterdam to escape certain death at the hand of the Nazis. One of his daughters was named Anne. Shortly before the end of the war she was killed by the Nazis, but her book: The Diary Of Anne Frank was found and published and read worldwide. The saga runs from Macy’s in New York, the Titanic disaster on the seas, the bustling city of Netanya in Israel, to the garret in Amsterdam. This is something to think about next time you watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

that the government “fund” accounting is totally inappropriate to measure the net bottom line benefits to the City of such a venture. More important, very few (if any) of the citizens who live near or otherwise utilize the facilities at Roxbury Park wanted the proposed expansion of function facilities–especially considering that such function facilities take away land that would otherwise be part of the park. What this project does is to downsize the “park” and increase the size of the function space they can rent out to paying customers. Why can’t the City remain in the business of running a City and providing park facilities which are available free for the use and enjoyment of our citizens? Why can’t the City leave the business of renting function space to entrepreneurs who are much more qualified, and much more responsive to the demands of their customer base? Will the Roxbury Park and its function facilities close at 8 p.m. like Greystone (which makes Greystone useless for evening events), because the park is in a residential area e.g. Roxbury has limited parking compared to Greystone? How many additional businesses is the City planning to go into? The City can’t even lease the properties they own, yet they (the City) want to build more and expand more? Finally, will Mayor Bruck-

er appoint as members of the City Council Committee for oversight of Roxbury Park only those councilmembers who strongly support this highly questionable park project. Mayor Brucker may wish to rethink that position and make sure the subcommittee is totally balanced. Any other subcommittee would be insulting to the community and considered highly biased. In my opinion, it would be more sensible and fair to also have committee members who would represent the many residents who are opposed to the park project. Nancy Krasne Editor's Note: Mrs. Krasne served on the Beverly Hills City Council from 2007-2011 and as mayor from 20092010.
