Residents surrounding the Jim Falk Lexus dealership proposed expansion gathered Monday to express concerns and have their questions answered by the Planning Commission and City staff. At the community meeting, residents said they were worried over the size of the proposed 9230 Wilshire Blvd. project. They said that Jim Falk Lexus

has been and continues to be a bad neighbor, blocking the already tiny streets, and releasing an excess of car pollution into the air through idling trucks going into the dealership. South Maple resident Manuel Bergher said he was mainly concerned about the increase of traffic. “I have three boys who walk (see ‘LEXUS,’ page 14)

By Marla Schevker The BHUSD received good news Tuesday as Governor Jerry Brown announced midyear cuts won’t be drastically affecting the state’s K-12 education. According to Assistant Superintendent of Business Services Alex Cherniss, the BHUSD will be

seeing a $10 to $11 cut per student or approximately $45,000 to $50,000 total effective Feb. 1. Cherniss told the board at its Nov. 22 meeting they needed to prepare for midyear cuts of up to $600,000 or $189 per pupil. “We are extremely pleased (see ‘MIDYEAR CUTS,’ page 8)

Drug-Resistant Infections: A New Epidemic? Most people are not aware that colds, flu, most sore throats and bronchitis are caused by viruses. Or that antibiotics do not help fight viruses and that using them for viral infections only decreases their effectiveness overall. Millions of Americans take antibiotics each year to fight illness, trusting they’ll work. However, the pathogens are fighting back. Within the past couple of RISING STAR ROONEY— David Fincher’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo costars Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig, who attended the London premiere of the film which opens next week. “I didn’t think twice about being nude—it’s such a huge part of the character in Steig Larrson’s novel,” Rooney tells Allure Magazine. “I just showed up and was comfortable.” Rooney plays the surveillance agent Lisbeth Salander, with Daniel appearing as the investigative journalist. SUMMARY NOTICE NOTICE OFADOPTION OF ORDINANCE 11-O-2616 OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BEVERLY HILLS AMENDING THE BEVERLY HILLS MUNICIPAL CODE TO ADOPT A VIEW RESTORATION PROGRAM FOR THE TROUSDALE ESTATES AREA OF THE CITY PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that on December 6, 2011, the City Council of the City of Beverly Hills adopted an ordinance entitled “Ordinance of the City of Beverly Hills Amending the Beverly Hills Municipal Code to Adopt a View Restoration Program for the Trousdale Estates Area of the City.” Mayor Brucker, Vice Mayor Brien and Councilmembers Mirisch, Bosse and Gold voted for adoption of the ordinance. A summary of that Ordinance follows: Summary of Ordinance An Ordinance of the City of Beverly Hills amending the Beverly Hills Municipal Code to adopt a view restoration program for the Trousdale Estates area of the City. Trousdale Estates is defined in the zoning code as all property located north of Doheny Road and east of Schuyler road, except that land zoned R-1.X, and that portion of lot A of the Doheny Ranch Tract northwesterly of Tract Numbers 24485 and 24486, commonly referred to as the Greystone Mansion Property.

The City’s intent in developing a view restoration ordinance is to restore and preserve certain views from substantial disruption by the growth of privately owned vegetation while also providing for the following important City goals: residential privacy and security; garden quality of the City; safety and stability of the hillsides; and, importance of trees and vegetation in the City as an integral part of a sustainable environment. The ordinance proposes to achieve these goals by establishing view criteria and a review process with an emphasis on early neighbor resolution of view restoration complaints. The ordinance includes four main components: 1.

View Regulations (includes definitions and findings that must be made by a reviewing authority);

2.

Exemption Area (establish parameters for foliage not subject to the regulations); Review Process (multi-step process including Initial Neighbor Outreach and Mediation that could result in a Planning Commission or City Council decision);

3.

4

Enforcement (one-time enforcement of a City decision with any costs borne by property owner receiving the decision to restore a view).

Trousdale Estates neighbors with view issues may address their issues in any manner they choose; however, if a property owner wishes to preserve the opportunity to have a case heard by the Planning Commission, the City's review process must be completed. Application fees for a City view restoration permit hearing before the Planning Commission would be borne by the view owner (property owners alleging disruption of views). Costs for restoring views, e.g. tree trimming, could be borne by the view owner or foliage owner (property owner with foliage alleged to disrupt a view), depending on when resolution is reached and the level of participation by the foliage owner. This is a separate ordinance from an ordinance adopted by the City Council in August, 2011, that established additional maximum height regulations for fences and hedges on certain slopes between properties in Trousdale Estates.

Environmental Drilling Begins At BHHS By Marla Schevker Drilling began yesterday for the seismic studies of Beverly Hills High School. The work, done by Leighton Consulting, Inc., will form the basis for the BHUSD’s defense against the Westside Subway Extension. The boring began after the Board of Education approved 4-1 to amend the contract with Leighton to add a compressed schedule Tuesday. Boardmember Lewis Hall dissented. Because of a need for the

geotechnical analysis, the consultants are planning to work 10-hour days. Leighton Consulting Inc. began yesterday and will continue boring in various areas around Beverly High through Dec. 30. They will bring a trenching plan to the Board Jan. 3 for approval. The total cost for the work is $420,290 that will be broken into Phase 2A and Phase 2B. The money will come from the Measure E Bond Fund. (see ‘SEISMIC STUDY,’ page 27)

Board Approves 3 Month Extension For Venable The BHUSD Board of Education continues to keep its arsenal full against the Metro Westside Subway Extension tunnel under Beverly High. At the Tuesday meeting, it unanimously approved a threemonth extension to its contract with the lobbying firm Venable. The original Venable contract expired Oct. 31 and was extended twice in one-month intervals. The new agreement

will expire March 31. Although the agreement was on the consent calendar, Boardmember Noah Margo pulled the item, expressing concern over the three-month time period of the extension. He said it was his understanding the Westside Subway Extension Final Environmental Impact Report would be available in late January or early February and after that, Ven-

able’s services would not be needed. “We should leave our options open,” Margo said. Boardmember and Venable liaison Lisa Korbatov said Venable would begin lobbying the House in January and the Senate in February. They are lobbying the Federal Transportation Authority and transportation subcommittees. Ven(see ‘VENABLE,’ page 27)

Goldberg Introduces ‘Parking Lot’ To Board Agendas By Marla Schevker Added to the agenda of new Board of Education President Brian Goldberg is a section called “Parking Lot.” The parking lot holds items “parked” on the agenda and Goldberg said he would pull one or two items for discussion at future general board meetings. Items in the parking lot were generated from boardmembers. “It’s a reminder for staff and the community to know these are items we haven’t forgotten about,” Goldberg said. “I found that we would discuss things

and they would fall through the cracks. I wanted to alleviate that as much as possible.” Once an item is pulled from the parking lot and placed on the agenda, there will be the opportunity for discussion on the item. Then it will be placed into a “follow up” category and action can be taken if necessary. After an item is discussed and moved from the parking lot, it frees up space for another issue to be brought up. Items currently in the parking lot are: (see ‘PARKING LOT,’ page 13)

Local Producers Mount Their Own Awards Campaign For The First Grader ture, Best Director (Justin Chadwick), Best Actor (Litondo), Best Actress (Naomie Harris—the next Bond girl, who plays the teacher), Best Supporting Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay (Ann Peacock, The Chronicles of Narnia), Best Cinematography (Rob Hardy), Best Original Score and Best Song” (Alex Heffes, and the song Walk On; his scores include The Last King of Scotland). The film has gone on to win more than a dozen Audience Awards around the world. “A film that has garnered this much recognition and praise, to not have a voice in this awards season is truly a travesty,” Harding said. “We fully understand we’re up against some of the biggest blockbusters and their bottomless financial resources —the odds are obviously stacked against us—however, our belief in our film has no ceiling and our conviction to tell its universal message of education and that ‘It’s Never Too Late To Dream’ is boundless.” Even on a shoe-string budget, the pair have successfully sent out 15,000 DVD screeners to members of the Academy, PGA, HFPA, AFI, NBR, Spirit Awards and a few other guilds/critics groups. Harding recently received a call from Sidney Poitier calling the film “astonishing,” and it will be honored at this weekend’s Satellite Awards in Beverly Hills. The organization created a special “Education” category for the film, since its a feature, not a documentary, The film will be released on DVD on Dec. 27.

Feeling abandoned by their film’s distributor, resident Richard Harding and his producing partner Sam Feurer have taken their film’s award campaign into their own hands. When The First Grader premiered at last year’s Telluride Film Festival, it became something of a festival sensation. The fact-based drama about an octogenarian Kenyan man (Oliver Litondo) enrolling in a public elementary school went on to finish second to The King’s Speech in voting for the audience award at the Toronto International Festival, and was honored with similar recognition at smaller festivals. “This is a gem of a film with the universal message about the power and importance of education; an 84-year-old man’s determination to receive the education he was once denied as a child,” Harding said. “The First Grader has truly inspired and touched all those who have seen it. ” But the film was unsuccessful at the box office, grossing just over $300,000 and Harding and Feurer blamed distributor National Geographic Entertainment for “poor marketing and advertising,” Harding says. It was largely overlooked by the mainstream audience. Now the two are mounting their own awards push for The First Grader, bankrolling it themselves with the help of the new Shea Family Foundation, which seeks to support entertainment that promotes family values. Darin Shea’s 8-year-old daughter was so moved by the film she got her father on board; and he is now running the Academy Award campaign for Best Pic-

MIDYEAR CUTS (Continued from page 1)

at the level of reduction in comparison to what we were preparing for,” Cherniss said. “In public education, we hope for the best but prepare for the worst. In this case, the district was preparing for midyear cuts of up to $600,000. The governor’s budget today represents a substantially lower midyear reduction in per pupil funding.” The $45,000 to $50,000 cut for the BHUSD is a part of the $79.6 million cut to public K-12 education statewide. The BHUSD already took an approximately $3 million fair share reduction this year, $1 million more than 2010/2011. Last week, Cherniss said he received the 2011/2012 First Principal Taxes Report from the L.A. County Office of Education, which includes preliminary property tax revenue projections for the upcoming year. The projections reflect an additional 2.5 percent, or $750,000, over what the BHUSD

limitations. Currently the Newport Mesa Unified School District superintendent, Hubbard was charged with two counts of felony misappropriation of public funds, for allegedly giving Christiansen a $20,000 stipend and increasing her monthly car allowance from $150 to $500 without approval from the Board of Education. On October, he was indicted on a third count of misappropriation of funds.

BEVERLY HILLS originally budgeted. The 2011/2012 Second Principal Taxes Report will be produced in April. “The recent tax news coupled with this encouraging news from the governor puts us in a healthier position moving forward,” Cherniss said. “However, we still need to remain cautious and vigilant in reducing expenditures.” Board President Brian Goldberg said while he is relieved that the drastic cuts predicted by the governor aren’t happening this time, the BHUSD will still see a reduction in the “limited funding” it receives from the state. Over the last few years, the BHUSD has had to cut nearly $4 million in state funds. “Hope is not a strategy but neither is fear,” Goldberg said. “We have worked hard to base our decisions on facts and doing our homework. California will never solve our long-term financial crisis on the backs of our students. California has gone from being one of the highest funding per student states to one of the lowest funding per student. Education is clearly not a top priority for this state and it should be.”

According to the indictment, when Hubbard was superintendent, he “directed a subordinate to increase the pay of employee Nora Roque” without approval of the board. Roque is not charged with any criminal wrongdoing. The sentencing for former BHUSD Director of Planning and Facilities Karen Christiansen is set for Jan. 5 in Dept. 102. Christiansen was found guilty of four felony counts of conflict of interest. She could be sentenced up to eight years in state prison.

It is also a key component of the VA’s new Integrated Health Initiative, Patient-Centered Care, which among other aspects, provides alternative therapies to veterans such as Tai Chi, yoga, meditation and other treatments to help veterans through their healing process. Peter Mullin said thousands of veterans returning from Afghanistan and Iraq now have a “tranquil and wonderfully peaceful place for recuperation.” He reported that this site is one of only four prototypes in the entire VA System nationwide. The garden is also the first phase of the VPC’s ambitious plans for the park – an outdoor amphitheater for various activities, a running track, volleyball court and other activities and veterans tributes.

“We are breaking new ground here, literally and figuratively,” Mullin said. “Not only is the approach to healing different, but the sheer number of veterans in need is staggering – several hundred thousand, a great many with physical, emotional and other severe disabilities.” Merle Mullin introduced the legendry Debbie Reynolds, who gave an emotional account of how she was affected by her three trips to visit troops in Korea as a 17-year-old, which she called “the most amazing experience of my life.” The actress-singer called the garden “beautiful” and offered her support for veterans. In addition, two veterans took the stage to acknowledge how the VA’s new alternative therapies have positively changed their lives.

ship Program, which promotes the appropriate use of antibiotics for hospitals in the UCLA Health System. According to Uslan, the public can also play a role in reducing the threat of antibiotic resistance, and he suggests the following: 1) Those seeing their doctor for a cold or flu should discuss the use of antibiotics. If it’s a viral infection, antibiotics aren’t effective and will only add to the problem of antibiotic resistance. Antibiotics are appropriately prescribed only for bacterial infections. 2) If a doctor determines a patient does not have a bacterial infection, they should not pressure the doctor to prescribe antibiotics. Instead, they should ask about methods to use to reduce their symptoms.

3) Patients should take antibiotics exactly as prescribed by their physician, even if they feel better. 4) Patients should not save leftover antibiotics for the next time they become sick. 5) Never take antibiotics prescribed for someone else. 6) Do not assume that yellow or green mucus indicates a need for antibiotics. It is normal for mucus to get thick and change color during a viral cold. 7) The vast majority of sore throats do not require antibiotics. Only 5 to 15 percent of adult cases of sore throat are due to “strep.” If a doctor suspects strep throat, a patient should ask if a throat swab is appropriate. For more information on antibiotic resistance, visit the UCLA Antimicrobial Stewardship Program website, www.asp.mednet.ucla.edu.

CHLA Patient Who Suffered Rare Disease Marks 10th Year Of Giving Back At age 13, Chris Graves was diagnosed with a rare and serious auto immune disease in the summer of 2002 known as Juvenile Dermatomyositis. In a short time, he developed a rash all over his body, scabs began appearing by his eyes, he experienced extreme muscle pain and couldn’t walk or move and could barely eat. Rheumatologist Bracha Shaham, M.D., became Chris’ doctor when he came to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA). Under her care, Chris improved over three months, went home for Thanksgiving and made a full recovery. To give back to the hospital for care he received, Chris along with his family and friends returned to CHLA on Monday for the 10th consecutive year to bring a truckload of gifts and

play music for patients to brighten their holiday season. Chris, along with his brothers David and Sean, recently formed their own pop rock band. The Graves Band has a song featured in the new movie New Year’s Eve, directed by Garry Marshall with an all-star cast that includes Robert DeNiro, Halle Berry and Jon Bon Jovi. “We are incredibly grateful to Dr. Shaham for her expertise and insight in helping Chris,” said Chris’ mom, Joyce Graves. “There were many bleak times along the way, but Dr. Shaham and the team helped us get through.” For Christmas that year, with Chris still in a wheelchair, the family decided to deliver toys to patients on the unit where Chris received his care. The tradition continues. SINGING IN THE HOLIDAYS—Beverly High will host a Holiday Music Festival on Wed. Dec. 21 at 7 p.m. in the KL Peters Auditorium. Featured will be the Madrigals, Minnesingers and the Concert Choir. Tickets are $5 at the door. Pictured are the Madrigal singers.

(Jim Falk Lexus) is the biggest Lexus facility on the Westside. How are you going to mitigate that?” Jim Falk Lexus, which opened in Beverly Hills in 1996, has been working with the Planning Commission to create a project that would work within the neighborhood. In the proposed plan, the building will be approximately 45 feet tall with 70 belowground service bays and 352 parking spaces. The loading area was

Golich also said during the environmental review, two significant and unavoidable impacts were identified. One was a short-term impact from construction and the other a cumulative noise impact generated by the combination of the dealership and other activities that occur in that area. In order to proceed, the City Council will have to determine that the benefits of the dealership outweigh the impacts. Approximately 10 meetings have taken place during the course of the planning of the project. Through the three project previews, two planning commission subcommittee meetings and four formal public hearings, more than 100 conditions were imposed on the project to ensure adjacent residential properties are not impacted by Lexus operations. The City Council will hold a hearing to listen to appeals against the proposed Jim Falk Lexus expansion at 7 p.m., Monday in the council chambers.

The majority of the funds for classes go towards the instructor, allowing the Community Services Department to offer classes for $1 for Beverly Hills residents and $2 for non-residents. The club raised close to $12,000 through two showcase fundraisers in 2008 and 2009 arranged by current club Vice President Ellyn Snowden. They also created a cookbook–now on sale– which has raised $1,900 thus far. Happenings & Opportunities By Frances Allen f it were any more mood altering it would be illegal. But you needn’t take my word for it, watch the faces of the audience as they leave the Plaza Theater in downtown Palm Springs after viewing a nearly three-hour performance of The Fabulous Palm Springs Follies featuring the big-“T” talent of professional performers who were born to the stage and haven’t left the “boards,” no matter that they are on the golden side of 60 years of age. The Follies runs for about six months during season featuring the best of vaudeville and Broadway, with a change of headliner about every six weeks. Currently, the multitalented John Davidson (who is a young 70) is heading the cast through New Year’s Eve; he will be followed by Maureen McGovern and then The Diamonds. While you will marvel at the talent of the performers who range in age from 58 to 82, you will also be amazed at the Broadway-style costumes, faithfully reproduced at a cost in excess of $1 million. But, most of all, is the show-mustgo-on spirit. The enthusiasm is infectious.” For example, impresario and cofounder of the Follies, Riff Markowitz, has never missed a single performance as “the Follies man” in the 20-year history of the follies. An example is 63-year-old Follies showgirl Greta Albritton, who broke her arm during a performance last month and had her forearm placed in a cast. Not a problem; the Follies’ wardrobe

I

department camouflaged her cast and about a week after the break, Albritton, camouflaged cast and all, returned to the stage descending a grand staircase in her 11-foot tall showgirl costume. That’s the definition of a “performer”—all you have to do is sit and enjoy. Your smile will thank you. ****** How do you measure the worth of a person? For some, worth is measured by the zeros before the decimal point on their account balances, and while this might appeal to a run-of-the-mill wealth manager, it doesn’t appeal to Jim Casey, president/CEO of Integrated Wealth Management. For him, a person’s value is measured more by the number of zeros in front of the decimal point written on checks written to charitable organizations to be used for improving the quality of life for the community of which we are all a part. Since Casey took up partial residency in the Desert about six years ago, there have been a lot of zeros written in front of the decimal point on his checks. Casey graduated from university with dual majors: business and psychology, giving him the skills to handle the finances and egos of high-net worth medical professionals and medical groups. This initial limited focus has now grown to representation of individuals and theatrical groups such as The Screen Actors Guild Foundation and the American Federation of Television & Radio Artists. A passionate philanthropist, Casey

strongly believes in helping the communities in which he works and lives to flourish. However, it is not just his financial resources that have enamored Jim Casey, right, and his the Desert partner Jason Altieri with Casey. He also gives of his time to numerous charities and organizations in the Desert as well as Los Angeles. His commitment runs deep, he is a board member of Desert Aids Project and a major ($1 million) sponsor of their annual Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards Gala. To these duties, Casey and his partner, Jason Altieri, have been named chairs of the Palm Springs Art Museum’s “Meet the Museum” event, the museum’s major membership recruitment drive. With all this, it is no wonder that Casey was presented last week with a well deserved star—number 339—on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars; and in keeping with his humility, Casey’s star reads “Jim Casey, philanthropist” … not financier. ****** “No man stands so tall as when he

stoops to help a child.” If Abraham Lincoln was right, and I believe he was, than there will be a lot of six-foot-plus men and women in the Desert next Jan. 8-10 for the Childhelp Celebrity Golf Invitational hosted by Cheryl Ladd and John O’Hurley. The festivities begin on Sunday, Jan. 8 with a ’50s theme pairings party and dinner at the Hyatt Grand Champions Resort in Indian Wells, the event’s host hotel. On Monday, players will be transported to either the ultra-exclusive, privately-owned (by Larry Ellison) Porcupine Creek or the top-tier Indian Wells Golf Resort. Breakfast and lunch will be provided on the course, with dinner and entertainment to follow that evening at the Hyatt Grand Champions. On Tuesday, the players will switch courses so that each golfer will have the experience of playing both courses, particularly Porcupine Creek, which has hosted world leaders and dignitaries since it was build by then billionaire, Tim Blixseth, about 15 years ago. able will also be integral in National Environmental Protection Act litigation on behalf of the district, should the Metro board vote to put the tunnel under the high school. “(We) have to have this run through March because there are too many balls in the air,” Korbatov said. “(But) should MTA take the right decision, then all of this stops.” In a letter to Korbatov from Venable employee Scott Gluck detailed some of the work Venable has done since being hired. “Venable has actively worked on educating federal lawmakers and agencies as to the reasons why the Santa Monica Location is superior to the Constellation Location,” Gluck wrote. “We have had many meetings with elected officials and their staffs – particularly those from the relevant authorizing and appropriating committees – and are working hard to both educate them regarding the merits of the Santa Monica Location as well as secure legislative language that would

achieve the School District’s objectives. “We have also actively engaged the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), who ultimately will be responsible for approving the Final EIR/EIS.” Board President Brian Goldberg said the district has a three-pronged approach to fighting the subway tunnels under Beverly High, one scientific, one legal and one political. Venable, he said, is an “important prong” of the MTA strategy. Assistant Superintendent of Business Services Alex Cherniss said through written notice, either party can terminate the agreement at any time. Venable is paid $15,000 a month.

SEISMIC STUDY (Continued from page 4)

Hall said he voted against the item because he hasn’t seen Phase 1. Also, the overtime is sizeable cost for the compressed schedule is $33,000 and he said he wasn’t convinced there was a need for the compressed schedule at all. Chief Facilities Official Nelson Cayabyab said if they did

not compress the schedule, there is a chance the information regarding the sub-surface investigation would not be available prior to the Final Environmental Impact Report for the Metro Westside Subway Extension’s release. In an automated letter sent out by the district, Board President Brian Goldberg said the community was “at a cross roads” and this work will be vital to fighting the MTA. “The Metro seismic reports have cast a cloud of seismic uncertainty over the entire west side of Beverly Hills and surrounding communities impacting hundreds of properties, thousands of residents, workers and guests,” Goldberg wrote. “The Beverly Hills High School investigation is the only effort underway by any public agency to lift this cloud. “The district’s primary interest is in the safeguarding of our students and assets, but is also very mindful that the actions being taken to challenge the Metro seismic reports will have an impact throughout the community.”

day night at The Beverly Hilton to launch the Andrea Bocelli Foundation. To say it was spectacular would be an understatement. The world’s highest selling solo classical musician, Andrea Bocelli, launched his foundation with an event produced by Jo Champa and Studiomusica USA, and presented by the Grammy Museum Foundation. The intimate evening included a concert starring Andrea Bocelli himself, accompanied by Carlo Bernini, David Foster, Heather Headley and Anna Maria Martinez.

ANDREA BOCELLI FOUNDATION–On hand at The Beverly Hilton for the gala launch of Andrea Bocelli Foundation were (from left): Veronica Berti, Studiomusica USA Managing Director Marco Marchesi, Andrea Bocelli, Foundation President Laura Biancalani, Jo Champa, and Belstaff's Manuele Malenotti. Photo by Lester Cohen/Getty Images

Bocelli’s longtime girlfriend, Veronica Berti, who is expecting their child and is also the foundation’s VP, welcomed the guests. The foundation, led by President Laura Biancalani, is a grant making body, aimed at providing funding, promotion and support to a range of initiatives and causes to deliver tangible results for people most in need. Two types of programs will be supported– those that alleviate poverty and those which help people overcome barriers caused by illness, discomfort or disability with innovative and original projects. Bocelli spoke about what the Foundation was attempting to accomplish. He read a portion of Dante in Italian which was translated by close friend, model Jo Champa. Bocelli presented the first Foundation Award, a Girard-Perregaux World Timer timepiece, to a surprised iconic music producer Quincy Jones. The GP World Timer chronograph features the worldwide time zones with day and night indicator and a black leather strap. Following the presentation, Bocelli performed a number of renowned songs including Ave Maria, Amazing Grace, More, Christmas Song, and New York, New York accompanied by Carlo Bernini and David Foster. Anna Maria Martinez performed Ebben Ne Andro Lontana, along with Tace il labbro and Time To Say Goodbye with Andrea. Additionally, Heather Headley sang a beautiful rendition of Over The Rainbow and a duet of The Prayer with the maestro. The show also featured a surprise performance from Michael Bolton of When A Man Loves A Woman, who also wowed the audience. The inaugural event included a live and silent auction and was made possible by Studiomusica USA, Jo Champa, M Staff, Guess, Saban Charitable Support Fund, Almud, Girard-Perregaux, and The Grammy Museum… One of the live auction items, to have dinner at his home in Tuscany, started a bidding war… Two couples won… One couple paid $45,000 and then he contributed another evening to the runners up for $43,000. The Grammy Museum pays tribute to music’s rich cultural history, this one-of-a-kind, 21st Century Museum, explores and celebrates the enduring legacies of all forms of music–the creative process, the art and technology of the recording process, and the history of the premier recognition of excellence in recorded music – the Grammy Award.

FIGHTING AGAINST HUBRIS Why bother to record history? A practical answer is that the exploits, successes and disasters of the past can help guide us through today. We get from this the saying, “Those who fail to study history are doomed to repeat it,” meaning repeating the failures of the past. So many of our traditions are based on both successes and failures, it’s nearly impossible to name them all. Many derived from wars and conflicts. Hanukkah, which is celebrated next week, commemorates the Maccabean victory over the Seleucid dynasty of Syria culminating in the rededication of the Second Temple. (Oh, yes, that one – one of the ones the Palestinians deny existed.) The restoration of religious purity spawned this annual celebration for the Jewish people. This month we also noted the anniversary of the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. No scholar or Congressional committee has ever been able to “pin the blame” on anyone. The blame was so widespread practically every American could be blamed for the surprise. Those who study it most can only conclude that we just simply never believed it would happen. Same with 9/11. Maybe there was a single culprit in all this – hubris. Certainly that describes our complacency before 9/11. Many American military leaders in 1941 simply concluded, as did one admiral, “The Jap[anese] won’t attack us. We’re too strong.” Obviously, Antiochus thought he could trample the traditional Jewish religion, conquer Jerusalem, defame the Temple and get away with it. All were proven wrong. Is there a difference between undisciplined ambition and hubris? Maybe. Probably. Ambition is what drives you to succeed. Hubris is the fall you take when you go too far or ignore circumstances. As for modern American hubris, we just lost a stealth drone over Iran. Our military said it malfunctioned. The truth is now disclosed that the Iranians actually hacked the computer controls and simply ordered the thing to land safely at one of its airfields. The vulnerability was known, but “hubris” told our military, “The Iranians can’t do it.” Wrong again. They did it and now they have our plane. Hubris strikes all of us. It is a true human failing.

POLICE BLOTTER BURGLARY Occurred between 5 p.m. on 12/5 and 8 a.m. on 12/6 in 300 block of N. Maple Dr. Unknown suspect entered secured rear gate of construction site, accessed rear door of residence and stole property. Loss $18,000 Occurred between 5:30 and 11:30 p.m. on 12/5 in 300 block of S. Crescent Dr. Unknown suspect pried open rear door window of residence, entered and stole property. Loss $2,200 Occurre at 11:45 a.m. on 12/9 in 9600 block of West Olympic Blvd.

In Beverly Hills, we truly are blessed with prominence and wealth far surpassing most of the world. Does that expose us to the hubris of our own success? Of course. As a nation, we are today bound up in hubris. We believe we can borrow and spend endless amounts of money without consequences. We continue to believe that despite clear evidence from Europe that this does not work. When will we recognize that a government that spends incessantly with no regard to the actual cost will doom its nation to decline and collapse? We are in that decline. We have a leadership that urges us to spend more with no regard for its cost or consequences. Our leadership tells us to keep it up despite zero evidence it does anything other than impoverish us. It continues to strip our people of the resources to pursue ambition— to build businesses, employ people in productive work, and to improve our nation. Instead, it creates a monolith of “government” that sucks dry every well of resources it can locate in order to keep itself growing. All the while it imposes more burdens on our daily activities in the name of some cause of theirs. That kind of hubris leads to disaster. It always does. Whether it was ancient Athens overreaching to invade Syracuse or Great Britain trying to impose a socialist state on itself while maintaining a position of dominance in the world, it does not work. It will not work for us. There are other powers coming into their own. They are just as susceptible to that hubris as we are, but that is really irrelevant. We must take care of our own house. Before the Maccabees recovered the Second Temple, it was lost. Before we won World War II, we lost our fleet and over 3,000 dead in two hours. Before we got Osama bin Laden, we lost the twin towers and thousands of people. The history is there for us to read. We tend to ignore it, but history will catch up with us and hubris will inflict its damages. As we celebrate our holiday season, we should pause for a moment of humility. We should ask ourselves, “Where are we headed? What makes us think we are immune to the immutable?” After we take that pause, let us nonetheless celebrate this time and this year. Happy Hanukkah. That was a good outcome. Our problems will keep a little longer.

Rabbi Jacob Pressman A BIG TIP FOR RESTAURANTS I have a big tip for the hardy souls who own and run the restaurants. You are providing a service for millions who like nothing more than a good meal prepared for them and served to them. Their variety offers the public mealtime experiences for every taste. However, they run the risk of providing an atmosphere in their establishments which can turn this convenience into a nightmare. Let us say that six people, relatives and or friends, gather round the carefully set table. They find that at the tables near them patrons are speaking loudly because at the other tables people have to do so to be heard. Very quickly as the tables fill up the noise level builds up and soon one has a room full of well-dressed people screaming at one another in order to be heard, and not always succeeding. By the end of two hours of good food and excellent service, patrons are worn out from shouting. As they leave the restaurant and go for their cars in the relative quiet of the public thoroughfare, they are happy to be going some place, any place, quiet. What a pity! Humbly, I suggest the following to the restaurant owner: get rid of your beautiful tile or hardwood floor, and replace it with carpeting. Have acoustic tile on your ceiling, and soft surfaces on your walls. Yes, these are more expensive and need careful cleaning, but they make a great difference. Then, bravely place on each table a beautiful message card, which says something like: “Dear cherished patron. Thank you for choosing us. Please note that this room is a quiet room, made for soft conversations. If the patrons at the next tables can hear what you are saying, you may be speaking too loudly and spilling personal secrets. If they are drowning you out, beg the waiter to inform them discretely of the place’s policy. If all this results in an ambiance of pleasant relaxation, then the next time you choose a place to dine, you will return here. Instead of leaving and vowing: “We’re not coming here any more!” You will say: “Let’s do it again!”

Astrology

By Holiday Mathis TODAY’S BIRTHDAY (Dec. 16). You’ll benefit from a holistic approach to living. Adjustments in diet and your choice of entertainment has a profound effect on unrelated areas such as your professional and romantic life. Education figures prominently into the year. Financial risk will bring a February reward. Your family expands in June. Taurus and Scorpio people adore you. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). You never stop improving. Your commitment to making life for you and yours better will be the driving force behind your choices for the next three days. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Rules and contracts may be restrictive, but those restrictions may not be enforced. People deal with other people–not with paper. Agreements come together outside of the norm. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). People around you may use sarcasm so they don’t have to show their true emotions. Your compassion will help you see beyond what’s being said and understand the deeper emotional implications. PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar. 20). You won’t be met with rejection, but your ideas may be confronted with indifference. That’s almost worse than a strong “no” if you let it hang you up in limbo land. Move forward with velocity. ARIES (Mar. 21-Apr. 19). Your ability to help others depends on seeing how they really need help and–perhaps more importantly–how they don’t. Some kinds of help will make things worse. TAURUS (Apr. 20-May 20) There are times when you think that being shy isn’t acceptable. You will feel compelled to reach out and risk rejection, partly because you see potential benefit and partly because it’s the right thing to do. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Becoming a superstar depends on completing several actions in the direction of your dreams–not one or two. Go over the top whenever possible. Use your imagination. CANCER (June 22-July 22). If someone is pulling you down, say goodbye for a while. The break could be the best thing that ever happened to you or the other person. It's nice to know where you stand as an individual, outside of the context of a group. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). You have a way of making things work out for the more neurotic people in your crowd. Calm them, help them relax into all going on beyond their control. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). You are highly influential now, so use your powers for good. Convince someone to do what’s right even though it might also be the more difficult choice available. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). You have no desire to do what everyone else is. In fact, there is so much activity going on around you that you may feel the need to sequester yourself to get some peace and quiet. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Your honest opinion will be appreciated by one who has proved strong enough to hear the truth. That same opinion might simply be too much for a person who is less mature.
