Residents surrounding the Jim Falk Lexus dealership proposed expansion gathered Monday to express concerns and have their questions answered by the Planning Commission and City staff. At the community meeting, residents said they were worried over the size of the proposed 9230 Wilshire Blvd. project. They said that Jim Falk Lexus

has been and continues to be a bad neighbor, blocking the already tiny streets, and releasing an excess of car pollution into the air through idling trucks going into the dealership. By Marla Schevker The BHUSD received good news Tuesday as Governor Jerry Brown announced midyear cuts won’t be drastically affecting the state’s K-12 education. According to Assistant Superintendent of Business Services Alex Cherniss, the BHUSD will be

seeing a $10 to $11 cut per student or approximately $45,000 to $50,000 total effective Feb. 1. Cherniss told the board at its Nov. 22 meeting they needed to prepare for midyear cuts of up to $600,000 or $189 per pupil. “We are extremely pleased (see ‘MIDYEAR CUTS,’ page 8)

Hubbard Trial Date Set For Jan. 6 By Marla Schevker The trial for former BHUSD Superintendent Jeffrey Hubbard has been set to begin Jan. 6 in Dept. 102 of the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center. Pre-trial motions will take place on Jan. 6 and jury selection will

FAMILY FESTIVAL—Happy faces and laughter filled three days of holiday celebrations as Children’s Institute Inc. expanded its annual family festival with the support of title sponsor Mattel Children’s Foundation. The foundation provided 6,000 toys to approximately the same number of children and families whose lives are affected by violence, abuse and neglect. CII’s Burton E. Green Campus in Torrance was the site of a two-day festival, followed by a celebration one week later at the agency’s new headquarters, the Otis Booth Campus, near downtown Los Angeles. Drug-Resistant Infections: A New Epidemic? Most people are not aware that colds, flu, most sore throats and bronchitis are caused by viruses. Or that antibiotics do not help fight viruses and that using them for viral infections only decreases their effectiveness overall. Millions of Americans take antibiotics each year to fight illness, trusting they’ll work. However, the pathogens are fighting back. Within the past couple of RISING STAR ROONEY— David Fincher’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo costars Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig, who attended the London premiere of the film which opens next week. “I didn’t think twice about being nude—it’s such a huge part of the character in Steig Larrson’s novel,” Rooney tells Allure Magazine. “I just showed up and was comfortable.” Rooney plays the surveillance agent Lisbeth Salander, with Daniel appearing as the investigative journalist.
