Beverly Hills School District Must Shave $20M From Budget Over Next Four Years By Laura Coleman Beverly Hills school leaders got a stark dose of reality this week when they learned that $5 million must be shaved from next year’s proposed budget. A report presented at Monday’s board meeting revealed that the district is projected to have $4.3 million in deficit spending this year and $4.6 million for the 2017-18 fiscal year. “We have some budget reductions we’re going to have to make going into the 2017-18 year,” Beverly Hills Unified School District Chief Administrative Officer La Tanya Kirk-Carter informed the board while leading them through a presentation. The information came just days before Kirk-Carter submitted BHUSD’s First Interim Report for 2016-17 to the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE). The submitted budget reflected a positive certification for three years out. The report states: “The 201617 First Interim Report projects the District’s General Fund to end with a positive fund balance while meeting the 3 percent required Reserve for Economic Uncertainties. However, as expenses continue to increase more rapidly than expected rev-

enue, reductions are necessary in the 2017-18 Fiscal Year to continue the District’s Positive Certification.“ In addition to requiring a $5 million reduction from the upcoming budget, the board must decide how to sustain $5 million in reductions for each of the three subsequent years, for a total savings of $20 million. The report submitted to LACOE projects expenditures for 2017-18 to be $63.9 million, which reflects a $5 million reduction that the board must figure out. For the current fiscal year, expenditures are anticipated to be $68.6 million. “Now the heavy lifting comes because we’re committed to doing that,” said Board President Mel Spitz. “There’s an absolute necessity to reduce our expenditures by at least $5 million a year, and it’s got to be a sustained reduction.” Kirk-Carter informed the board they had until March to figure out how to shave the money from the budget. Spitz confirmed that starting next month the board would commence study sessions. ”I’m very glad that the board has recognized this and we’re now committed to this because it’s built into the budget,” he said.

By Laura Coleman On Monday, the Board of Education unanimously approved the hire of Dr. Michael Bregy as the new superintendent for Beverly Hills Unified School District with a starting annual salary of $265,000. Bregy’s three-year contract also includes a $7,200 annual car allowance, a $1,800 annual phone allowance and all health benefits. Bregy, whose start date is Feb. 1, will leave his current position as superintendent of North Shore School District 112, which is located just north of Chicago, Illinois. As part of his contract, BHUSD will pay a $12,000 buy-out for Bregy’s current employment contract at North Shore, an $18,000 buy-out for his current home lease, and up to $10,000 for Bregy to relocate from Illinois. BHUSD spent approxi-

Board President Mel Spitz said that the district interviewed two candidates after receiving 20 applications. “I think we were lucky,” Spitz said. “In my business career, I’ve had occasions to hire CEO’s and other top management positions, and I have never felt more secure than I do about Dr. Bregy.” The school community (see ‘SUPERINTENDENT’ page 19)

Beverly Hills Community Remembers The Victims Of AIDS, Advocates For A Cure By Laura Coleman When HIV/AIDS first became part of the public consciousness in the 1980’s, little was known about the disease. Those infected were discriminated against and effective drugs to manage the virus were still in their infancy. “At the time we thought of HIV as a death sentence,” recounted Olympic gold medalist and advocate Greg Louganis, who was diagnosed with the human immunodeficiency virus in 1988, just months before he went on to win gold at the Olympic Games. For World AIDS Day this year, Louganis helped honor victims of the disease as well as shine a light on doing more to put an end to it at “Voices of Hope” at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts. Beverly Hills Teen Ashlynn Chong Says Goodbye To Kidz Bop By Matt Lopez Ashlynn Chong’s elementary school years spent in Beverly Hills Unified School District’s Honor Choir were mostly about having fun and spending time with friends. She could have never imagined the career it would lead to. As Chong, 15, wraps up her final months touring with the teen music group Kidz Bop, she looks back on those years in the BHUSD Honor Choir with fondness. “I started that in second grade,,” Chong told the Courier. “It was a great way to learn about performing and singing, and traveling to different places to perform.” Kidz Bop is a touring teen group that covers and performs contemporary pop songs. The group has released 33 albums since it was founded in 2001. Chong, a Beverly Hills native, originally tried out for Kidz Bop when she was 9years-old, but failed to make

the cut, so she continued locally in the Honor Choir until she was ready to try out again, three years ago. Chong threw her name in the ring again at age 12, that time beating out thousands of kids from all over the country to be one of the four chosen for Kidz Bop. Chong estimates that she spends about 80-percent of the year devoted to working with Kidz Bop, performing and recording albums. Beverly Hills Urban Forest Manager Pfalzgraf Elected To Agua Dulce School Board By Six Votes By Victoria Talbot Beverly Hills Parks and Urban Forest Manager Ken Pfalzgraf has won a seat on the Board of the Acton Agua Dulce Unified School District, where he lives, by six votes in a win that left no ballot uncounted. Pfalzgraf is a recognizable figure in Beverly Hills, known for his educational informatives on City trees and parks at City Council and Recreation and Parks Commission meetings. He has successfully helped several neighborhoods select appropriate street trees to replace aging ones, selected

specimen mature oaks to populate the new Community Dog Park and navigated the City’s switch from water-guzzling vegetation to drought-resistant landscaping, without sacrificing the green vistas that identify Beverly Hills as a park City. He is also known for making electric guitars from cigar boxes and other discarded materials. The guitars are one of his daughter’s favorites, which is why he started building them. However, Ken does not play guitar at all. Now Pfalzgraf has taken on another role, one that is (see ‘PFALZGRAF’ page 18)

Bel-Air Beautification Effort Nets $40K And Still Growing By Matt Lopez A fundraising effort kickstarted by the Bel-Air Association to further beautify the Bel-Air community has garnered more than $40,000 in donations, BAA boardmembers told the Courier this week. Headed up by BAA Boardmember and Chair of Keep Bel-Air Beautiful Tawny Sanders, the program kicked off its 23rd year last month, with donations going toward Holiday decorations, sprinkler repairs, removal of dam-

aged trees and branches, and the addition of landscaping and other greenery. The program was first established in 1993, when the City of Los Angeles made major budget cuts that forced limited services to Bel-Air neighborhoods. Because of this annual fundraising effort over the last 23 years, Keep Bel-Air Beautiful has helped fund island overhauls, seasonal planting, holiday decorations and roadside cleanups.

Le Belvedere went on the market for $85 Million.

Rey, Gottula Team Up To Sell Le Belvedere, Listed For $85 Million By Victoria Talbot Joyce Rey and Stacy Gottula, the award-winning real estate team that sold Le Belvedere in 2010, have the property on the market again, listed at $85 million. The actual 2010 selling price is unknown, but sources confirmed that it was between the $47 million paid for Colorado’s BootJack ranch and the asking price of $72 million. At the time of the 2010 sale, The Wall Street Journal reported it sold for $50 million, calling it the highest sale price in the nation. “Now we are seeing more sales for $100 million and more,” Rey said. “The market has changed since 2010 in that regard. There are many more such prop-

erties; it’s not that unusual.” “There aren’t a lot of beautiful European chateaus like this,” said Gottula. “The home sold during the holiday season last time. I think it’s a good time to launch in order to get that type of buyers.” Le Belvedere was developed by Mohamed Hadid, who has leased back the property from its offshore owners who purchased it. Author Combines Recipes, Poetry And Literature In Latest Cookbook, Cooking With The Muse Myra Kornfeld believes poetry and cooking go together. And she proves it in her fourth cookbook, Cooking With The Muse, A Sumptuous Gathering Of Seasonal Recipes, Culinary Poetry, And Literary Fare. The book combines the passions of Kornfeld—who grew up in Beverly Hills attending Beverly Vista and BHHS—and her husband, poet scholar and professor Stephen Massimilla, the book’s co-author. “Stephen was always a sounding board for my recipes and I always admired his work, so it occurred to us that our skills are complementary,” says Kornfeld. “This project marries both our work—and when recipes are written well, they’re like poetry. In fact, Kornfeld points out that 19th century recipes where actually written in verse so cooks could remember them. The result is a “synergy between cooking and writing,” Kornfeld says, 10 years in the making, with original poems, poetry by the masters, “interesting musings” and prose essays accompanying the recipes. With more than 200 color photographs, the 500-page book features 150 dishes, many inspired by cuisines from around the world. Reflecting cooking instructor Kornfeld’s (she teaches in the graduate nutrition program at the Maryland University of Integrative Health and The Natural Gourmet Institute) background in real-food traditions and nutrition, the dishes highlight local ingredients and encourage the use of seasonal produce, wild seafood, traditional fats, and meat from pasture-raised animals.

Stephen Massimilla and Myra Kornfeld

The book is paleo-friendly and gluten-freefriendly, and all the recipes have been thoroughly tested. “Poetry and food speak to the same things,” says Kornfeld, who divides her time between New York City and Beverly Hills, and whose mother has lived in town since 1972. “They both nourish, reflect our values and feelings and are inseparable from our relationships to each other and the seasons.” With its emphasis on fresh ingredients, the recipes are organized by seasons. In Autumn, the recipe for “Blackberry Parfait” is paired with Galways Kinnell’s Blackberry Eating. In Summer, writings by Pablo Neruda, Robert Frost and others garnish recipes for “Seared Tuna with Purple Potatoes and Cherry Tomato Sauce” and “PeachIndigo Blueberry Crisp.” For more information, visit www.cookingwiththemuse.com—Steve Simmons

To Brain Circuits That Control Speech Researchers at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) have conducted the first study of its kind, using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) to look at brain regions in both adults and children who stutter. Consistent with past functional MRI studies, their findings demonstrate neuro-metabolite alterations across the brain— linking stuttering to changes in brain circuits that control speech production and circuits that support attention and emotion. The study in now published online in the Journal Of The American Medical Association (JAMA). The research was led by Bradley S. Peterson, M.D., director of the Institute for the Developing Mind at CHLA, and professor and director of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at USC’s Keck School of Medicine. Developmental stuttering is a neuropsychiatric condition; its origins in the brain are only partly known. To measure an index of neural density related to stuttering in circuits and brain regions suspected to be affected, the scientists performed proton shift imaging of the brain in 47 children and 47 adults. The

study included subjects both with and without stuttering. The research team found that affected brain regDr. Bradley S. ions includPeterson ed major nodes of the so-called Bohland speech-production network (associated with the regulation of motor activity); the defaultmode network, (involved in the regulation of attention); and the emotional-memory network (responsible for regulating emotion.) “That stuttering is related to speech and language-based brain circuits seems clear,” says Peterson. “Attention-regulating portions of the brain are related to control circuits that are important in governing behavior. People with changes here are more likely to stutter and have more severe stuttering. And emotions like anxiety and stress also tend to make stuttering worse, likely because this network interacts with language and attention-control circuits.”

Mojee Uses Latest Technique In Beauty To Help Clients Achieve Perfect Natural-looking Eyebrows

M

ojee Amirvand believes everyone deserves the perfect eyebrows. At Permanent Makeup by Mojee, offered exclusively at Rodeo Surgical Art, she offers PhiBrows, the latest technique in microblading to achieve the most natural-looking eyebrows. PhiBrows is a manual skill of semipermanent eyebrow drawing. The shape of the eyebrows is based on the architecture of the face to achieve the optimum beauty of the eyebrow. Ultimate symmetry is achieved by designing the shape that compliments all facial features, and with the help of PhiBrows digital applications and golden intersection eyebrow compass. Mojee was “blown away” when she first learned about this world-class European technique—created by Grandmaster Branko Babic, taking microblading to the next level. PhiBrows is also popular with men, in Europe and growing in the U.S. High quality vegan pigment—chosen to match a client’s hair or eyebrow color—is applied into the dermis layer of skin using sterilized manual tools. Strokes are always drawn in the direction of natural hair’s growth to achieve a hyper-realistic look. “It’s not natural to have the hairs all going in one direction,” says Mojee. “The way hair grows on the scalp and eyebrows is like a dance. Each hair has it’s own movement.” However, perfect results can also be achieved even if clients have few or no hair. The 90-minute treatment is performed with the artist wearing gloves, with sterile tools and under numbing and anesthetic creams for comfort and controlling pain. There’s no down time, says Mojee. Since it’s estimated that women spend eight to 10 minutes a day

or six and half full days a year on their eyebrows, PhiBrows its a timesaver with always perfect results, says Mojee who also spends a lot of time, correcting work done by others. With more than 13 years of master training and experience, Mojee also provides traditional permanent makeup procedures including eyebrows, eyeliner and lip color. The procedures are attractive options for women with active lifestyles or sensitive eyes, and for all who want to “wake up with perfect make up.” Her services at Rodeo Surgical Art are part of the plastic surgery practice of Dr. David Mashhadian. “He sees his work as art and he’s a perfectionist like me. It’s a great partnership.” “Permanent makeup is not my job, it’s my passion, says Mojee. That passion carries over to her charity work, helping women suffering from cancer. By Matt Lopez The Beverly Hills High boys basketball team moved to 4-5 on the young season on Dec. 10 with an 85-72 loss to Taft in a consolation game of the Beverly Hills Tournament. The Normans have been working through injuries in the early going, and have been without Ron Artest III thus far. Daniel Zahabian led the Normans with 22 in the loss to Taft, while Jason Merman added 15. That loss followed a 76-67 defeat against Loyola last Friday, in the tournament’s fifth-place semifinal. On Dec. 7, BHHS lost to El Camino Real 61-49. Sam Cohen had 12 points and Zahabian scored 10. Artest added eight points for the Normans. The Normans started the season winning three in a row, but have lost five of their last six games. Ironically enough, the

Beverly Hills Tournament was won by BHHS’ heated rival Santa Monica, which defeated Washington Prep 52-42 in the tournament final. After the holiday break, BHHS hits the court Jan. 7 for a game against La Jolla Country Day before beginning Ocean League play.

was informed of the decision Friday evening via an email authored by Spitz. “Dr. Bregy is eminently qualified to lead our district to new levels of academic performance and organizational and fiscal stability,” Spitz wrote. Bregy’s contract with BHUSD states: “The superintendent shall have the authority to organize and arrange the administrative and supervisory staff, including instruction, business and operation affairs, which in his judgment best serve the district. The responsibility for selection, placement and transfer of existing personnel shall also be vested in the superintendent. Organization and transfer of personnel, and employment of new personnel, shall be recommended by the Superintendent subject to Board approval.” The board has faced significant criticism over the past several years due to its tendency to micro-manage. It remains to be seen how successful the incoming superintendent will be at navigating the challenges that have confronted his predecessors. Although Bregy’s most recent leadership role did not include oversight over a high school (North Shore has no high school), his experience spans from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.

Bregy started his career as an elementary school teacher and then went on to teach middle school math. He subsequently served as assistant principal for Jacobs High School in Algonquin from 2001 to 2004 and then as principal there until 2010, when he was tapped to become assistant superintendent of that school district. In 2011 he officially became superintendent for Community Unit District 300, the sixth largest school district in the state of Illinois, with 21,000 students, 27 schools and an annual operating budget of $200 million dollars. He moved to head the Highland Parkbased North Shore School District 112 in May 2015. At Tuesday’s board meeting, Spitz said that Bregy already had plans to locate to the L.A. area in June. According to an article that ran in the Highland Park Patch, which covers the Chicago suburb, Bregy announced his resignation from District 112 in an email last weekend, just before the BHUSD board voted in open session to approve his contract. Said board member Howard Goldstein: “I’m delighted to support the appointment. For nearly 30 years, Jewish Family Service (JFS) of the Desert has provided social services to residents of the Coachella Valley – regardless of religious affiliation. In addition to the more than 4,000 clients it will serve this year, JFS is known throughout the area for it’s signature fundraiser, One Night Only, produced by renowned celebrity photographer Michael Childers. The premise of the event is simple: gather together two-dozen, or so, Broadway stars, each of whom sings one song in a performance running for only one night. Tickets to this year’s incomparable performances featuring the works of Jerry Herman go on sale at the McCallum Theatre Jan 22; curtain up for the live on-stage event extravaganza is April 20. Patron donating $1,000 or higher were treated to a “thank you” party at the Big Horn Golf Club home of Justin and Jan Baldwin (pictured below), new supporters of JFS. Their home was lavish, as expected at Big Horn, but the Baldwin home has a special feature: a self-conducted tour of world class, museum quality modern artworks.

Arriving guests were given a numbered list of the artists and the name of their artwork that was placed carefully throughout the home. The list was essential, as the pieces on display numbered more than 250! It is truly an amount and quality that any curator of modern art would covet. For more information about Jewish Family Service of the Desert, call 760-325-4088. ****** The stars still shine brightly for the upcoming Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF). Amy Adams has been announced at the recipient of the “Chairman’s Award” for her performance in Arrival, in which she plays a prominent linguist as she attempts to communicate with creatures in one of a dozen spacecrafts. This five-time Oscar-nominated and a two-time Golden Globe winner has also received two previous awards from the PSIFF. The second recentlyannounced award-winning actress is Annette Bening, who will receive the “Career Achievement Award.” She was hailed by Harold Matzner, festival chairman, as a creator of many memorable performances, including that of a free-spirited single mother raising her teenage son in the film 20th Century Women.

PUBLIC NOTICES ORDINANCE NO. 16-O-2715 AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF BEVERLY HILLS AMENDING BEVERLY HILLS MUNICIPAL CODE SECTIONS §5-2-106, §5-2-107, §10-3-1604, §10-3100, §10-3-2003 AND ADDING BHMC §10-3-1620.3 TO CONDITIONALLY ALLOW ANCILLARY PET BOARDING FACILITIES WITHIN RETAIL ESTABLISHMENTS IN COMMERCIAL ZONES SUBJECT TO A CONDITIONAL USE PERMIT. THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BEVERLY HILLS HEREBY ORDAINS AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. On August 25, 2016, and October 13, 2016, the Planning Commission held duly noticed public hearings after which it adopted Resolution No.1790, recommending that the City Council amend portions of Title 10 (Planning and Zoning) of the Beverly Hills Municipal Code to conditionally allow pet boarding facilities (collectively, the “Amendments”) in certain commercial zones. On November 15, 2016, the City Council held a duly noticed public hearing, received public testimony, and thereafter introduced this Ordinance. Section 2. This Ordinance and the Amendments were assessed in accordance with the authority and criteria contained in the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), the State CEQA Guidelines, and the environmental regulations of the City. The adoption and implementation of the Amendments would allow the establishment of an ancillary pet boarding facility subject to approval of a conditional use permit. The City Council hereby finds that the Amendments are exempt from CEQA pursuant to Section 15305 of Title 14 of the California Code of Regulations because the Amendments represent minor alterations in land use limitations related to ancillary commercial uses, and do not result in any changes in land use or density. Further, the commercial areas in the City in which the ordinance would apply have an average slope of less than 20%. Section 3. The Amendments are consistent with the objectives, principles, and standards of the General Plan. General Plan Policy Land Use “9.1 Uses for Diverse Customers” encourages a variety of land uses and businesses that support the needs of local residents. Policy Land Use “10.1 Local Serving Businesses” encourages the promotion of appropriate development of businesses that serve and are located in close proximity to residential neighborhoods. Finally, Land Use Policy “15.1 Economic Vitality and Business Revenue” calls for the city to sustain a vigorous economy by supporting businesses that contribute revenue, quality services and high paying jobs. Section 4. The City Council hereby amends Section 10-3-100 of Article 1 of Chapter 3 of Title 10 of the Beverly Hills Municipal Code by adding one new definition with all other definitions in the section remaining unchanged. The term “Pet Boarding Facility” is added between the terms “Paving” and “Physical or Mental Impairment” as they presently appear in Section 10-3-100, to read as follows: “PET BOARDING FACILITY: A commercial or non-profit facility that is fully enclosed within a building and provides day and/or night boarding for four or more adult dogs, cats, or any combination thereof, for persons other than the occupant of the facility including the boarding or keeping of animals for the purposes of training, grooming, boarding, or socializing, and is ancillary to a principally permitted retail business for pet-related merchandise. This does not include the keeping of animals for receiving or recovering from medical services.” Section 5. The City Council hereby amends Section 5-2-106 of Article 1 of Chapter 2 of Title 5 of the Beverly Hills Municipal Code to read as follows:

which a conditional use permit has been granted.” Section 7. The City Council hereby amends Section 10-3-1604 to Article 16 of Chapter 3 of Title 10 of the Beverly Hills Municipal Code adding one new conditionally permitted use with all other provisions in Article 16 of Chapter 3 of Title 10 remaining in effect without amendment:

You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid on a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be

aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of the outstanding lien that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 714277-4845, or visit this internet Web site www.usa-foreclosure.com, using the file number assigned to this case T.S.# 81616. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.” FEI # 1077.00578 12/02/2016, 12/09/2016, 12/16/2016

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR We are fortunate in Beverly Hills to have a holiday soundtrack playing from speakers along Rodeo and Beverly Drive that give a great sampling of Sinatra, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole, and even some of the more obscure holiday songs like Snow from ‘60s chanteuse Claudine Longet, once married to Andy Williams, quite the Christmas crooner himself. Probably my all time favorite and by far the most famous Christmas album with a rock sound is A Christmas Gift For You from legendary (for tragic circumstances now) record producer Phil Spector who had quite a Beverly Hills history. This album has sensational performances from singers Ronnie Spector, La La Brooks of the Crystals, and the incredible Darlene Love, who just released her first album in many years this past year an powerfully sang Baby Please Come Home From Christmas on the '60s album and on the David Letterman Show each year. Phil Spector lived in a mansion off Doheny Road in the ‘60s with wife Ronnie whom he mentored. The house was used for filming many times and was the home base for the Entourage gang. Spector was noted for his “Wall of Sound” production technique using top notch studio musicians like drummer Hal Blaine and piano man Don Randi. The songs on the Spector Christmas album became go-to arrangements for many other artists who borrowed them for their own holiday songs, like Bruce Springsteen’s Santa Claus Is Coming To Town which uses a similar arrangement. In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine voted A Christmas Gift For You the 142nd “Best Album Of All Time” out of 500 entries. Very prestigious. Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys named it as his favorite. La Dolce Vita restaurant was a frequent dining spot for Phil Spector in the 1960s and all the way into the 2000’s when he would take large

groups of friends there. Also his pal Nancy Sinatra would dine with him there and also at Dan Tana’s. She would always buy holiday candies at Edelweiss, her favorites being the foil wrapped mini Snowmen they still sell. Many laps have been run around the track at Beverly Hills High School (by me) trying to melt down some of those snowmen! Happy Holidays to all my Beverly Hills neighbors. See you at the Paley Center this weekend for the trolley ride with Mrs. Claus. Hal Lifson ****** Growing up in Brooklyn and then in New Jersey and Manhattan, I too recall celebrating the joy and cheer of Christmas with friends and family---along with our Jewish tradition of Hanukkah, . It was a sweet, warm, wonderful time of the year, filled with love and good cheer and laughter. Now these celebrations are being displaced by an all-purpose, generic celebration of something (not sure what). Please don't blame us angry, old, white, homophobic, misogynistic, racist, anti-Semites, for the diversification, inclusivization, eradication, and pasteurization of Christmas and Hanukkah. Blame the peace loving, all inclusive practicing, PCP (politically correct police), who stomped and sued to free us from the bondage of these cult-type traditions. Sources close and far away hint the PCP were concerned about the possibility of some young radicalized ISIS’ type person feeling slighted by the public displays of Christmas and Hanukkah while deciding to run his car into “holiday” shoppers and then cut them with their knife or lose the car and get right to the knifing. By the way, an unemployed, fat, old, angry, white, guy with a red suit and long white beard stopped me on the street and whispered “Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.” He said to pass it along. Robert Block

Astrology By Holiday Mathis TODAY’S BIRTHDAY (Dec. 16). Things will go exceptionally well in the money department in the next three weeks, and this helps other things, too. Riding that line between being responsible to others and doing your own thing—that will be your growing edge in the early parts of 2017. You’ll always win by bringing your most professional self to the moment. Taurus and Scorpio adore you. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). The magic question of the day: How do you envision this process working? Ask yourself; ask others. It will get everyone thinking of the practical steps necessary to realize the goal. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). If you do not not wake up filled with a sunshiny spirit, it can still be a happy day. What’s dragging your thoughts into the shadows? Identify the main issue. Confront and conquer. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Sometimes everything feels like a top priority, but that’s not how priorities work. Get real about it. What's the one thing you could do to make the rest fall in line? PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar. 20). Most people listen to one another with a cursory level of attention. Listening is a muscle. It takes practice to get this muscle in shape. Listen better than others do (not hard), and seize the opportunities they miss. ARIES (Mar. 21-Apr. 19). Avoid personalizing other people’s behaviors by assuming they are reacting to you. Many factors affect behavior. You may only be a small part, but you’ll be a positive part. TAURUS (Apr. 20-May 20). An issue you deal with is not who you are. The less you identify

with it the better. Separate yourself from the circumstances. Remind yourself of your good qualities and reinforce what you’re all about. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). You probably wouldn’t guess what someone finds attractive about you, but you don’t have to. The more you focus on your strengths, curiosities and interests the bigger your light becomes. CANCER (June 22-July 22). Love and commitment fuse together today. You won’t be sure if you’re doing something because you love it or you love it because you're doing it. Either way, it’s a slice of heaven. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Emotional courage is the key to getting the results you want. When you’re willing to deal with uncertainty and embrace the pain that goes along with growing and changing, this is when the transformation you wish for begins. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Some feelings you want to build up, and others you want to feel a lot less of. Suppressing an emotion will only make it stronger. If you want to feel less of a thing, express it. Get it out, and let it diffuse. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). The less reactive you are, the better you’ll handle things. The better you handle things, the more someone will admire and like you. The more someone admires and likes you, the higher you’ll be promoted. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). The way to tell a great question is by the answers you're getting. You’ll create an environment of warmth and people will open up to you, giving you exactly what you want.

A Guest Phobia From Piper Lefkon

FEAR OF INHERITING MY DAD’S PHOBIAS

My name is Piper. I’m a 3-year-old rescue dog and have I got a story to tell you.... One day I found myself abandoned and living on the streets of Beverly Hills. It was a scary time but I managed to survive the unwanted advances of dogs much larger than me; homeless folks who would not share their handouts; Uber drivers who, like the poor little lambs in the Whiffenpoof Song, had lost their way and Ferraris and Lamborghinis using Canon Drive as their own private speedway giving new meaning to the phrase “road kill.” Despite my misfortune I was a normal Yorkshire terrier with a love of people, a voracious appetite, a wiz at doing card tricks and a complete absence of any phobias. I was also someone who had escaped adversity more times than Houdini. Then one day Yorkie Rescue of America found a foster home for me and I became a candidate for adoption. It was then that I met my savior and entered the perilous world of Roger Lefkon. This tale is all about my adopted dad and his litany of phobias, impulsive behavior and how he transformed me from a well adjusted puppy, who had never experienced a stress related eye twitch, into a clone of himself. It all began when I jumped into Roger’s black Prius with the license plate “Anxiety 1.” He was exhibiting panic-like symptoms consistent with bringing a new born baby home from the hospital and proceeded to lay out his game plan. Our first stop was the local pet emporium to buy an assortment of toys and treats which was followed by a visit to Sit ‘n Sleep to purchase a high end Tempur-Pedic mattress and a designer bed for yours truly. Roger then asked me if I was hungry and I said “no.” He insisted that I looked famished and so we made a pit stop at Wolfgang Puck’s eatery to pick up a medium rare bone in filet. It was my first doggy bag. After shopping for a soft goose down pillow and stopping at Hansen’s bakery to pick up my “welcome to your new home” cake in the shape of a dog bone, we made our way back to the car with both of us being ever so careful to avoid stepping on the cracks in the sidewalk before finally arriving at my new digs. I was beginning to adapt to his phobic lifestyle and at serious risk of becoming a poster dog for OCD. Over time his mishegas became mine. He had a fear of heights that ranged from bridges, tall buildings, and mountain roads to hospital beds. During a visit to Dr. John Winters, the renowned veterinarian and celebrated handicapper, I found myself atop the examination table and cringed as I calculated the distance from the table’s slippery surface to the floor below. It was as if I was on the precipice of the Grand Canyon. Sadly, I had acquired my dad’s Acrophobia. When it came to rarified heights we both had cold feet, two for him, four for me. There was also a time when I relished dining on bugs and insects. There is nothing like a juicy cockroach, tasty spider and a couple of sweet bees…all good stuff and nutritious. Then one day the old man and me were lying in bed together watching “Animal Planet” when a swarm of bed bugs invaded our domain. Roger went ballistic reaching for his electronic zapper and frying the intruders as they headed in my direction. I jumped out of bed in a frenzy, packed a few things and checked into The Beverly Hills Hotel until the next morning when a puff of white smoke arising from our chimney signified that the coast was clear and it was safe to return home. I like being in confined spaces, which in this dog-eat-dog world, provide me with a sense of security. My dad on the other hand goes out of his way to avoid tunnels, elevators, department store changing rooms, cars with central locking, MRI scanners and trains with sealed windows. It wasn’t however until we were both trapped in a revolving glass door and he reached for his cell phone to call Phyllis at home saying: “don’t forget to feed Piper if I don’t make it out” that I began to panic. Standing next to him I thought to myself, “add Claustrophobia to the growing list of inherited anxiety disorders.” To this day I continue to collect many of his phobias including–never being late, exposure to germs, loud noises, being followed by drones and virtual colonoscopies, yes there are colonoscopy procedures for dogs and yes they are a pain in the butt! Nevertheless, when all is said and done, my life has been enriched by foregoing cognitive behavioral therapy and simply following in the footsteps of my neurotic, well meaning, loving father. Piper lives in Beverly Hills with her dad, Roger and mom, Phyllis. She is a prominent animal rights activist and author of A Dog’s Guide To Human Behavior. Her philosophy of life is: “If you have food and a pulse rate, I’ll love you.”
