From The Publisher Twenty-five years sure do fly by. I can still vividly remember the first-ever Rodeo Drive Concours d’Elegance – my office, in the basement of the Salvatore Ferragamo store, was ground zero. At the time, I was representing Ferrari, and they were willing to fund that first wonderful effort. Mark Scott was the City Manager at that time and, though cautious, with the car expertise and persuasive powers of Bruce Meyer, we prevailed. Twenty-five years later, we are proud to once again partner with the Rodeo Drive Committee to produce the Summer 2018 edition of Beverly Hills Style. Dina Leeds, Big-Hearted Philanthropist With Style, Grace And Love To Spare Bel-Air resident Dina Leeds opens up to Beverly Hills Style about philanthropy, family, and the need to give back
F
or Dina Leeds, doing her part to make the world a better place comes naturally. From volunteering on the boards of the Los Angeles Ballet, the Builders of Jewish Education and StandWithUs to serving as president of the American Friends of Magen David Adom (AFMDA) Western Region and co-chairing this year’s Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust’s annual gala dinner on Dec. 3, there seems to be no end in sight to Dina’s philanthropic endeavors. “When anybody tells you what his or her charity is doing, if you’re human, it’s impossible not to have a heart for it,” Dina explained. Born in Egypt, Dina’s family fled the country when she was just 2-years-old following 1967’s SixDay War. After a six-month stint in Italy, the family moved to the Fairfax area in Los Angeles, enticed by the strong Jewish community. Starting over from scratch, Dina’s mom worked three to four jobs, instilling in her daughter an incredible respect for hard work. Bolstered by her parents’ strong work ethic, Dina said that by the time she was 26 years old, she’d made her first million dollars. “My husband has this saying, ‘The harder I work, the luckier I get,’” she said of the love of her
life, Fred Leeds, with whom she shares seven children. When the Leeds moved into Bel-Air just over two decades ago, people frequently approached Dina to ask if they could hold an event in her home. “To me it just felt like throwing a dinner; and that wasn’t a big deal,” she described of the affairs she hosted three times a week for several years. “To me it was having guests, making them aware of an important cause and doing whatever good we could do with what we had.” She highlighted the upcoming Holocaust Museum gala honoring Lord Daniel Finkelstein and her friend Mona Golabek, a world-renowned concert pianist and author of The Children of Willesden Lane about her mother's experience with the Kindertransport, as a critical event to commemorate the past. “I think real philanthropy has to do with looking at the world in the way it relates to children,” she said, underscoring the importance of teaching her own children the value of giving back. “Maybe why I’m involved in philanthropy is because I know there’s no difference between me and anyone else,” she added.

Circa Beverly Hills Is Haven For Estate Gems, Jewelry
T
here’s something intensely magical about diamonds for Soheila Jalali, who joined Circa in 2017 as the buyer at the Beverly Hills office. “My love for gems and jewelry goes back to my childhood when I would save my weekly allowance to buy a sparkly item to own,” she described. “There’s just such a beautiful world inside diamonds. I just love looking inside them. It’s such a mystery.” A Graduate Gemologist from the Gemological Institute of America with more than 35 years of experience in the jewelry industry, Soheila is among the elite when it comes to understanding the value of jewels. It’s a skill highly prized by Circa, which purchases jewelry from private clients and then sells to a select group Soheila Jalali of collectors via Circa’s main office in New York. “One of the things that is very unique about us at Circa is that when we look at a piece of jewelry, if we’re interested we’ll take it right then and write a check,” Soheila said. “One of the advantages of selling to Circa is you get immediate payment, and we’re very, very competitive." From diamond grading to antique and modern, luxury retail and estate jewelry sales, Soheila has seen the world of gems. In Beverly Hills, Soheila said she deals a lot with estate jewelry. “I am still excited to see every piece of jewelry that my clients bring in,” she said. “Every piece is unique, and the experience is unlike any other I'd previously had. After A Facelift, Refreshed Ford Theatres Set Eclectic New Season
T
he Ford Theatres are ready for their closeup. After a $75 million renovation, the uniquely California venue in the Cahuenga Pass is in the midst of an eclectic season. At 1,200 seats, the complex “is the most intimate of amphitheaters,” says Interim Executive Director Olga Garay-English. “Nestled in the Hollywood Hills, it’s not unusual to see deer grazing behind the stage during a performance.” “It’s had a facelift,” says GarayEnglish, with the Zev Yaroslavsky Terrace for dining, state-of-the-art lighting towers, new dressing rooms, a stage that’s been upgraded from concrete to ipe, a Brazilian hardwood; soundproofing panels that have replaced plywood sheets, and a projection system for film screenings. Garay-English, with more than 30 years in the arts field, was brought on board in November 2016, before the start of the nearly three-year renovation. “L.A. County, which owns the facility, invested quite a bit of money into upgrading the physical plant

here was once a time, not all that long ago, when — without a gym membership — the best option for getting a true, full-body workout was spending thousands of dollars on weight-lifting equipment for the garage. Those days, however, are long gone. The digital age has brought with it countless new tech gadgets that make getting a great workout, or just becoming the healthiest version of yourself, easier than ever before. The tech market is constantly evolving as apps change and update and new gadgets are released, but Beverly Hills Style has compiled some of the hottest and most sought-after health and fitness gadgets of the year.
Peloton Tread The makers of the famous Peloton Bike, which has taken the home-fitness world by storm over the last few years, are set to unveil a new, full-body Peloton workout. The Peloton Tread will offer live, full-body training at the tap of a touch screen. Like the Peloton Bike, the Tread will offer a similar guided fitness experience, mixing live cardio and strength workouts, along with training by top New York instructors, giving users their own private fitness studio. According to MensHealth, which reviewed the Tread, it will – unlike the Peloton Bike – encourage users to hop off the machine for circuits of weight training exercises in between sprints. Under Armour HOVR As far as wearable fitness tech goes, most people are used to seeing the various wristbands or headbands that are on the market. Under Armour has taken it one step further with its new “smart shoes” called HOVR. The HOVR, which comes in low-top (the Sonic) and mid-top (the Phantom) editions, are truly designed for the heavy-duty runner. The shoes come with a builtin sensor that tracks distance, pace, stride, cadence and steps. The bluetooth-powered sensors are located in the thickest section of the midsole, protecting it in any weather condition. Under Armour says the sensor, called the Record chip, was designed to outlast the life of the actual shoe. The batteries do not need to be recharged as the sensors are self-contained. The shoes are a companion to Under Armour’s popular and free MapMyRun app, which is available for download on both iPhones and Android devices. The shoes easily pair with the app via bluetooth. S
lightly disconcerting, there’s something about dining at Vespertine that is unsettling to the point of heightening your senses. That the food is exceptional is secondary to the theatricality that surrounds the immersive hours-long experience. A clever experiment by Chef Jordan Kahn, who just this month won the coveted Grand Prize design award from the Los Angeles Business Council, Vespertine celebrates its first anniversary next month inside the other worldly Eric Owen Mossdesigned structure. “The goal of the restaurant is to be this Fluxian source of ideas,” Kahn told Beverly Hills Style. Like a symphony that is more about experience than the individual notes and instruments, Vespertine offers diners a thoughtfully curated evening of molecular gastronomy. “People go to restaurants because of food. But food is not what stays in your memory,” noted Kahn, who began his career at The French Laundry. “You just remember the experience, the time you had. It’s really a complex art form.” Named for a flower that blooms in the evening, Vespertine is very much a
A jewel-like pea creation is both art and cuisine. convergence of food, art, architecture and music in a world entirely crafted by Kahn. “I found this building and everything clicked,” Kahn recounted of his initial foray into Culver City’s Hayden Tract area to escape typical L.A. traffic five years ago. After returning that very evening around 3:30 a.m. and jumping the fence to explore the exterior of the distinct structure dubbed the Waffle, Kahn began returning nightly around 2:30 a.m. Eventually, he grew bold enough to remove the wood panels off the door and enter the multi-story architectural marvel that bore no resemblance to a typical restaurant. “I couldn’t get it off my mind. I was really intrigued,” Kahn said of the building he spent four years tailoring to house Vespertine. “It’s this really powerful energy that’s hard to articulate.” From the moment you approach the reticulated steel building, Vespertine invites diners to participate in an experience akin to theatre. Vespertine’s home is a building by Eric Owen Moss. rhythm to an original atmospheric instrumental score composed by L.A.based band This Will Destroy You, the evening begins with a welcome drink in a Bauhaus-type garden. Next, you are led through a gorgeous kitchen where Kahn personally greets you, explains his concept and essentially reads your “vibe” in anticipation of further personalizing the evening. The first act enfolds on the building’s open air rooftop with spiced wine and cozy couch-like seating. A member of the sublime staff, attired in black garments made by Jona Sees, explains that the sculptural center piece on the low table illuminated by candles is actually a trio of seaweed “chips” artfully draped on a curved log. After more appetizers that likewise blur the distinction between food and art, such as a delicious biscuit of black currants and burnt onions, the journey continues in the main dining room downstairs, where more than a dozen different courses fully articulate the tasting menu-only concept. Artfully plated on ceramics crafted by Ryota Aoki, many made from volcanic stone, an early course of snap peas fashioned into a large green shimmering jewel sets the stage for this second act, which includes an optional pairing of wines or juices. Perhaps the most curious dish is one that is served entirely hidden from view in its ceramic home, where the creamy rice pudding with crab is a total surprise. Following a flight of desserts, the final act of Kahn’s sublime visual and culinary narrative returns you to the outdoor garden where you first began, this time with coffee, liqueurs and sweets. The smell of incense wafts from your own particular space in the mazelike concrete garden draped in foliage while you gaze with newfound understanding at the exoskeleton of oxidized metal in which you just indulged. -Laura Coleman Beverly Hills Style | Page 27
