Wine and Happiness Sommelier Jörn “Joey” Kleinhans trains new and experienced oenophiles on how to get the most enjoyment out of wine. By Alyssa Gautieri

only three years old, Sommelier Jörn “Joey” Kleinhans discovered his interest and passion for wine in his hometown of Etzenborn, Germany. “I started tasting wine at a very early age,” says Kleinhans, who was allowed to sample wine at family gatherings. “Many people appreciate wine, not necessarily for its alcoholic element, but because they see the beauty and complexity in wine,” he says. Although he takes great care not to condone underage drinking, Kleinhans acknowledges that the culture throughout Europe is very different than in the United States. The U.S. legal drinking age of 21 is much more restrictive than the range of 16 to 18 in most European countries, which he notes presents challenges for young people who want to pursue higher education or a career studying wine.
When Kleinhans rediscovered his passion for wine in his 20s, he felt dissatisfied with the conversation surrounding wine in America, and he was inspired to start The Sommelier Company. “I thought we can do something amazing here,” he recalls. “Why don’t we bring together America’s best sommeliers around the country, and put them in front of those audiences that can appreciate them properly?’” As the founder of The Sommelier Company, Kleinhans works alongside a team of more than 100 sommeliers and wine educators to expand the country’s passion for wine. Whether guiding wine tasting experiences, designing restaurant wine programs, creating executive wine education programs or expanding homeowners’ personal wine collections, The Sommelier Company has become a nationwide resource for wine expertise. Wine tasting events are available for anywhere between 1 and 1,000 guests. When Kleinhans leads wine and whisky tasting workshops, he likes to keep things “entertaining and provocative, but in a way that people without prior knowledge can relate.” While Kleinhans understands the value of entertainment, he also prides himself on his ability to educate future wine enthusiasts. “While you are perceiving these complex flavors [in the wine], we create the proper context that make these tastings memorable and useful so that you remember it for the rest of your life,” says Kleinhans. “A well-executed wine tasting is a dramatic and lifechanging event for people who want to learn more about wine, as well as for those who already know about wine and want to learn more.” For Kleinhans, the most challenging part of being a sommelier is mastering objective communication. “The hardest part in life, in general, is to communicate with people,” he says. “If you do that well, then your success can be unlimited. Speaking about wine with clarity, and especially with the right hierarchy of knowledge — starting with the fundamental knowledge and then building upon it — is very challenging.” Kleinhans selects to work only with other sommeliers that can communicate well — which he says, shockingly, is the minority of sommeliers.
Among his many tips for wine drinkers, Kleinhans encourages people of all ages to lead a “life toward enjoyment and happiness,” and he believes wine plays a major role. “Life is there to be enjoyed, and we find that — and millions of people agree — wine keeps your attention for many years,” he adds.
Tips from a Sommelier 1. Start with medium-quality wines
“One common misconception is that you have to work yourself up from lower quality to higher quality wine,” Kleinhans says. “You need to, at least, start with medium-quality wines.” The desirable flavors and proper harmony of medium quality wines will draw you into the world of wine, says Kleinhans, who recommends beginning with wines priced between 20 and 50 dollars. “Good wines cost a lot of money, but medium- and high-quality wine will become a huge life enhancement over many years,” he adds.
2. Focus on essential classic grape and region combinations
Wine lovers who start studying textbooks about wine appreciation are soon intimidated by the number of grapes and regions. “Many people are so overwhelmed by wine, [but] wine is actually very easy to learn if you study the classics,” Kleinhans says. For each grape variety, there are one or two essential regions, according to Kleinhans. The grape-region combinations to study first include Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, California, blends based on Sangiovese from Tuscany, Italy, and Riesling from Mosel, Germany. Meanwhile France, the world’s most important wine producing country, is home to many classics — including blends of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from Bordeaux, Pinot Noir from Burgundy, and Grenache from the Southern Rhone Valley. Other important regions include Australia, Argentina and Spain. “Study these wine classics first,” Kleinhans says. “Once you study those, you’ll have a good overview of the world of wine.”
3. Bring wine into the home
“Homeowners are building their life around wine,” says Kleinhans, who has noticed the rise in wine cellars, rooms and fridges within luxury homes. “There is a direct relationship between real estate and wine [as] people are building and renting houses that accommodate their lifestyle.” Designed to be attractive additions to a home, in-home wine storage merges function with design — which also “increases real estate values tremendously,” according to Kleinhans.
4. Simple food pairings are the way to go
When it comes to food and wine pairings, Kleinhans loves classic flavors — such as Sauvignon Blanc from France with scallops and oysters. For a red wine pairing, he recommends Barolo — or the King of Wines — with wild boar, truffle and a heavy mushroom sauce. At Thanksgiving dinner, Pinot Noir perfectly pairs with turkey and cranberry sauce. “Those are three classics right there that will always make you happy,” Kleinhans says.

The organization brought 30 Sunshine kids from hospitals all over the country to the most magical place on earth!
