• Program Hours: 9:00 am - 1:00 pm. (Pre-Care and Extended-Day are available)
• All children must be the designated age for the program and potty trained.

Registration opens Wednesday, February 5 at 12:00 pm at pjaproud.org/summer. PJA families receive priority registration.
Bring a vegetarian snack and lunch (no meat, poultry, or shellfish) and a water bottle.
Credit Card transactions will incur a flex fee of 2.73%.
To avoid this fee, consider using (ACH) Bank Account Transfer. In the event of a class cancellation, PJA will make every effort to direct your child to another program or issue a full refund. There are no refunds after June 1 except in the case of a class cancellation. Refunds incur a $30 processing fee.

PJA Extended-Day (for age 4 only): 1:00 - 5:30 pm
Cost: $285 per week (pre-registration required).
MJCC Extended-Day (for ages 5-12) is available through MJCC Summer Day Camp at the Mittleman Jewish Community Center. Visit oregonjcc.org/summerdiscovery for all the details. Summer Discovery staff will escort students to the MJCC at 1:00 pm.

Leapfrog engages young learners in an exploration of math, science, and literacy activities that are hands-on and inquiry-based. These classes nurture your child’s curiosity, allow imaginations to flourish and encourage a love for learning.

Stepping Stone inspires children to explore new and exciting topics that incorporate inquiry-based activities, global themes and project-based work. Students will form friendships with other learners who share their passion for the same topic.

Come chill with us in the beachy breeze while we create baked, blended and frozen treats to celebrate the sweetness of summer. Kids will create custom recipes, make beautiful art, play with giant bubbles, and decorate the most colorful cupcakes imaginable.
IMAGINATIVE STORYTELLING
Join in on some summer storytelling as we create small and large scale puppets, learn how to bring them to life through theatre, and share our experiences through storytelling.

This class is for kids who want a chance to shine in front of a group. We will use fairy tale characters and mix them up for a whole new play. Make costumes, sets/props and learn about developing a character and putting on a show. Invite your family and friends to watch at the end of the week.

Wildlife Wonders using LEGO® Materials (ages 5-7)
Develop computational thinking skills, building programs, and have fun with new friends! We use age-appropriate online tools, including Lightbot, Kodable, and Scratch to introduce basic coding skills that are in line, both cognitively and with the attention span typical for ages 5-7. At the end of the week, you will be able to share your projects and continue programming at home with your Coding with Kids Scratch account.

Through visual programming, learn computational thinking and basic programming concepts such as pseudocoding, code structure, variables, and loops. Engage in fun activities to practice problemsolving and creative thinking. Complete interactive projects and code robots to perform tasks like turning the robot’s lights on and off, playing music, moving, and detecting sound.

From word puzzles to math puzzles to shape puzzles to brainteasers, there are limitless amounts of puzzles to grow and stretch our brains! Each day, we will add to our portfolio of puzzles and build our very own puzzle books to bring home at the end of the week!

Chess is the greatest board game! Chess is thousands of years old and still one of the most popular games around. We will learn the basics from pieces to positions and a little bit about the history of the game. Students will go home with a chess board of their own. All levels are welcome.

Welcome to the Doodle Club! Practice your sketching skills and learn to draw original and existing characters, pictures, and more! Go home with a sketchbook and artist's pencils and more confidence in your doodle abilities.
Spend the week perfecting friendship bracelets, making cool lanyards, building bead animals, weaving on a loom, sewing, and more! Weaving and string arts help with planning, organization, fine motor skills, and creativity. All skill levels are welcome! Instructor: Lucy Leo | Cost: $265

Learn amazing facts about horses real and imaginary through stories, activities, nonfiction and crafts. Each day of our class will focus on a different aspect of horse life and care. The class will enjoy a visit with a "real unicorn". Let your imagination fly!

Learn about fencing, giants, monsters, thrilling chases, daring escapes, true love, and miracles –as you wish! Adventure awaits! During our journey, we will learn to build characters, practice the basic rules of DnD, work as a team to solve puzzles, and defeat (or befriend!) monsters! Students will discover a realm of endless possibilities, build lasting friendships, and learn the magic of cooperative storytelling.

Come find out why football is the most popular sport in the USA! We will learn some football history, look at how plays are designed and executed, and, of course, we will play some ball. Students will have a chance to try out playing different positions and designing their own plays.
Learn the basics of programming a robot and how to use code along with hardware to open up so many more possibilities with technology. Through a block-based, visual programming platform, learn introductory concepts, such as code structure, variables, and loops. Apply these concepts, along with problem-solving and creative thinking, to program your own robot to complete mission challenges, such as avoiding obstacles, light sensing, and following a path.

Dig into a world of adventure with us as we uncover the wonders of the Earth. Kids will start their own rock collection or organize their existing one. Learn coding using Scratch, a fun dragand-drop coding environment and practice coding fundamentals like Variables, Loops, and Conditionals while unleashing their creativity by designing characters, creating scenes, and adding sounds. Crafters will crochet their way to making stylish, warm accessories while having fun in the sun. • Choose a younger age group and a class topic that excites you.
Note: Contracted classes are not available (LEGO/Coding/Robotics)
• When registering online, look for class titles that include “Dragon Team” (e.g., Fairytale Mix-Up/Dragon Team, ages 7-15).
• Register and pay.

Adrianne Sharrock has taught Pre-K at PJA for almost 20 years! She is delighted to bring her passion for role playing games and storytelling to Summer Discovery each year. Her favorite DnD class to play is druid and her favorite spell is Misty Step! She hopes you’ll join her on this summer’s adventure!
Ben Stolberg has worked at PJA for the last two years across various grade levels. He thinks learning should be fun and active. Ben loves to learn about new topics with his students and find a way to challenge everyone's thinking at a level appropriate for each individual student.
Bess Nation aspires to foster an environment that encourages exploration, creativity, and confidence through discovery. After graduating from PSU, she taught abroad and in the US. She loves reading, cooking, drawing cute cats, rockhounding, and being a mom.
Celinda Llanez is the PJA Kindergarten teacher and has been the Summer Discovery Program Director since 2010. She loves to wander into classrooms to see the fabulous projects and the participants' excitement as they learn something new.
Coding With Kids has been on a mission to bring children the highest quality coding education no matter where they are, since 2013. Every child deserves an opportunity to learn this fun and lucrative skill that gives access to quality employment without migrating.
Cody Hall is an instructional assistant for kindergarten at PJA. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Theater Arts and is pursuing her Master's degree in Social Work. She loves all things Disney and Marvel. She can’t wait to learn and explore with the kiddos this summer!
Ellen Kipnis has taught for over 30 years, 19 of those at PJA. She believes in learning through hands-on activities and curiosity as a guide to gaining new knowledge. She loves children and her goal is to make a positive difference in all children’s lives.
Hannah Guglielmana is a kindergarten instructional assistant at PJA. She is a junior at PSU, pursuing her Bachelor’s in Psychology and Family Studies. She loves to teach history and theatre, and enjoys hiking and reading in her free time.
Lucy Leo is in her 8th year of teaching second grade at Portland Jewish Academy. She loves to read, crochet, and spend time with her dogs Fozzie and Thelma. She is looking forward to another year of exploring, learning, and crafting with you at PJA Summer Discovery!
Play-well provides project-based programs for children ages 4-15 using LEGO©. Kids enjoy exploring fundamental engineering and physics principles as they build elaborate objects, structures, and vehicles.
Rae Hill is an artist with a focus on repurposing materials in order to minimize waste. As an autistic adult the are very passionate about inclusion and self-expression. They work at PJA and Kidscorner during the school year.
Susanna Perrin taught at PJA for 22 years. She loves the integration of story and art with learning. Susanna also enjoys reading, hiking, and creating her own art and spending time with family and pets.
