Glasgow Comic Con 2019 - Event Guide

Page 1

WELCOME If you lined up everyone in my life, I probably know more people ‘in comics’ than not. I’m not entirely sure when the balance tipped that way but I think I got pretty lucky with the way things worked out. Looking back on it, I realise I’ve built numerous friendships on a foundation of mutual affection for Grant Morrison books and obscure pop culture (ok, Riverdale) references; a “hey, I like your t-shirt” or a chance conversation, usually (ok, always) tipsy, at the bar after a convention. Heck, I courted one of my now-close pals at a Thought Bubble in 2015 after we worked together on a project, and now she is stuck with me forever (thanks for designing this programme, Kirsty). One such friend I came to know along the way was Michael Hogan - who we tragically lost this month. I met Mike about seven years ago, when I still worked behind the till at my local comic book shop. Part of the same book group, we bonded over a shared love of sad autobiographical comics and Alanis Morissette. Knowing him was one of the greatest gifts comics has ever given me and the fact that I won’t see his face on the convention floor today absolutely breaks my heart. With that in mind, I’d like to dedicate this year’s convention to Mike, but also to anyone who met their best friends through some ‘weird’ thing you all liked - whether it be it comics, anime, cosplay… anything. Glasgow Comic Con has always been for anyone who wants it and, whether you come along by yourself or with a group of mates, I hope you feel like you have a place here – or that you’re able to find one. Next year is our tenth year of being a convention - we’ve got big birthday plans. Best keep July 4th, 2020, free. Nicola Love Event manager glasgowcomiccon.com @glasgowcomiccon P.S. This year’s incredible poster artwork was done by Chris Baldie. You can find him at Table 46 or at www.chrisbaldie.com.
