Saturday– WELCOME2

Welcome to: Glasgow Comic Con 2017

W

e say this every year but 2017 has to be one of our most exciting line-ups yet. Marguerite Sauvage is paying her first visit to Scotland, industry legend Pat Mills is making a long overdue appearance and the 2000AD lot are celebrating their 40th anniversary north of the border. That’s before we even mention Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie – genuinely one of my favourite creative teams in comics, ever – and more than a dozen other special guest creators. This is Glasgow Comic Con’s seventh year, which makes it the longest running convention in the country (take that, MCM Scotland). It started back in 2011 at the Mackintosh Church, made its way up through the Centre For Contemporary Arts before arriving at the Royal Concert Hall in 2016. With our new venue and this year’s focus on activities for all ages, we hope to keep attracting comics fans young and, er, not quite as young, old and new, to our convention. Here’s to seeing you again in year eight. The Glasgow Comic Con Team

GUEsts MAIN PROGRAMME Queer comics and building your own scene 11:00–11:45 When comics get LGBT+ characters right, we punch the air and tell all our friends. When they get it wrong, well … We speak to indie creators about representation in the medium, how it extends beyond superhero books and why, sometimes, you have to write the stories yourself.

Getting the keys to Marvel and DC 12:00–12:45 Working for the Big Two is career-making stuff. You get to shape the future of the world’s best-known superheroes but, if fans think you’ve got it wrong, they’ll shout at you on Twitter. Here Amy Reeder, Al Ewing, Elsa Charretier and Marguerite Sauvage talk working for Marvel and DC and taking on the publishers’ hottest properties.

Inside The Wicked and the Divine 1:00–1:45 The Wicked and the Divine is the latest masterpiece from acclaimed comics duo Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie. The pair, joined by Wic Div editor Chrissy Williams, spill all about the creative process behind this mythical, mystical new world. Someone will probably ask about Young Avengers too.

Be Pure! Be Vigilant! Behave! Pat Mills on secret history of 2000AD and Judge Dredd 2:00–2:45 A man who needs no introduction, 2000AD legend Pat Mills returns to Glasgow. In conversation with Frank Plowright, Mills looks back over his incredible career and discusses his brand new e-book, which lifts the lid on the publisher’s 40-year history.

Celebrating 40 Years of Thrill-Power with 2000AD 3:00–3:45 Four decades ago this year marks the first issue of 2000AD. Creators old and new tell us how 2000AD gave some of the biggest names in the industry their first big break and why the genre-busting publishing powerhouse is still the best comic hitting British newsagents’ shelves. (Just don’t tell the Beano we said that last bit.)

Cosplay Competition and Masquerade 4:00–5:00 Some of the top UK talent show off their skills at making, crafting and just generally being awesome at creating believable true-to-form character costumes. Cosplayers of all ages and abilities are invited to show off their skills! .

Saturday– SIGNINGS2

Signings While there isn’t a limit on the number of books to be signed, attendees are encouraged to be canny. (Basically, if it’s busy, your entire comic book collection will have to wait.)

Pat Mills (TABLE S43) 11:00–12:00 Pat will be signing copies of his new book Serial Killer, as well as his back catalog.

Frank Quitely (TABLE S49) 1:00–2:00 Frank will be signing copies of his new book Frank Quitely: The Art of Comics, as well as his back catalog.

Pat Mills (TABLE S43) 3:00–4:00 Pat will be signing copies of his new book Serial Killer, as well as his back catalog.

A world-renowned artist in hot demand, he’s currently finishing off the epic story Jupiter’s Legacy with fellow Scottish comic book legend, writer Mark Millar. The exhibition at Kelvingrove is the largest collection of his work ever displayed. You can get up close and personal with the painstaking detail in every iconic frame. There will also be original artwork from titans of the comic book industry such as Frank Millar and Neal Adams as well as an original Batman comic strip by Batman creator Bob Kane. And of course the exhibition wouldn’t be complete without including the strip that inspired it all, The Broons!

Clydebank Museum and Art Gallery

Sunday, July 2

26 May – 29 July 2017 // FREE Admission

1.30pm-3.30pm // £10/£7/£5

This summer Clydebank Museum and Art Gallery, in partnership with the University of Glasgow’s Hunterian Museum, presents Comic Invention. Based on the Hunterian Museum’s 2016 exhibition, Comic Inventions adds Clydebank Museum and Art Gallery’s local collections and with the help of Frank Quitely— who better?—the exhibition shows that the culture of comics is all around us. See the world’s first comic, trace the birth of the comic as we know it and leave seeing the world in in glorious comicolour!

All the way from New York City, artist Amy Reeder sits down with Frank Quitely in her first ever trip to Scotland. She’ll dissect a career that’s seen her work on beloved characters like Batwoman and Supergirl as well as Moon Girl and Rocket Girl. Admission for the talk also includes entry into the Frank Quitely: The Art of Comics exhibition. The talk will be followed by a short signing.

Finding the Royal Concert Hall: The Royal Concert Hall is at the very top of Buchanan Street in the heart of Glasgow city centre. If you’re arriving by bus, the venue’s Killermont Street entrance is directly opposite Buchanan Bus Station. If you’re a fancy train travelling type, Queen Street Station is five minutes walk while Central Station is about 10 minutes away (depending how quickly you can get around in your cosplay!).

Cash machines and coffee shops: While some vendors may accept card payments, cash is the way forward at conventions. Your closest cashpoints are at Buchanan Bus Station (across the road from the Concert Hall’s Killermont Street entrance) and Sauchiehall Street (a few minutes’ walk from the venue’s Buchanan Street entrance). Sainsbury’s, Pret a Manager, Cafe Nero and Starbucks are all a stone’s throw away from the venue if you need to refuel - the Royal Concert Hall also has its own cafe.

Disabled access: All areas of the Royal Concert Hall utilised by Glasgow Comic Con are wheelchair accessible. All attendees who require additional support are welcome to bring a guest with them to the convention free of charge. If you have any questions or need any assistance on the day, email nicola@bhpcomics.com.

Cosplay is not consent: Glasgow Comic Con is a fun, safe, welcoming environment. Every year we host hundreds of cosplayers, the majority of whom are more than happy to stop and take photos - providing you ask. The convention has a strict anti-harassment policy, so anyone who can’t keep their hands to themselves will be kicked out (not literally ... actually, maybe literally) very quickly. Attendees are encouraged to report any instances of harassment to convention volunteers or venue security.
