In 2017, he transferred from the Belle Specialty Plant to the Colony West plant as a packer and finished his employment there as a loader operator.

If you have lived in the West for very long, you have probably heard the saying “good fences make good neighbors.”

However, this can only be true when the fences are based on a good survey.

Folks often assume that the “physical” boundaries of their property are the legal boundaries, e.g. that the existing fence or old tree line lies on the lot line.

This summer a case before the South Dakota Supreme Court confirmed that those assumptions can be wrong. In Lammers v. South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks, 2019 S.D. 44, 932 N.W.2d 129, a property owner (Lammers) assumed that a fence and tree line was the legal boundary to his property and it had been treated as such for over 50 years.

When his neighbor, the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish & Parks, (SDGFP) surveyed the property as a part of a fence replacement project, they learned that the fence was, in fact, in the middle, over 100 feet off the actual legal boundary line between the properties.

accurate, the “fence line” was not straight and the result was a difference in over three acres.

The end result in this case turned on the fact that the “neighbor” was a governmental entity and the South Dakota Constitution provides that public land cannot be adversely possessed.

The fence line was moved to the legal boundary and Lammers’ claim against his neighbor was unsuccessful. If the neighbor had been a private party, the case could have had a different result, but would likely have involved lengthy litigation over the historic use of the property to determine if a claim of adverse possession could prevail.

For purchasers of real property, the takeaway is – get a survey before you buy! Confirm where the legal boundaries are and where the improvements on the property lie in relation to those boundaries before the purchase is closed by having a survey done by a competent licensed surveyor. The investment in the cost of the survey is worth the peace of mind, and is certainly less than extensive litigation with your neighbor.

Replace your cabin air filter One component that often goes unnoticed in late-model vehicles is the cabin air filter. This helpful filtration device is used to trap pollutants and dust traveling through your HVAC system before it enters the interior of your car.

Recommended interval changes dramatically differ based on your climate, driving conditions and time of year, but the American Automotive Association says most manufacturers recommend replacing it every 15,000 to 30,000 miles.

The installation and part cost is relatively affordable so don’t forgo a replacement at your repair facility’s suggestion.

Is it really that important?

Most vehicles pre-2000 weren’t equipped with cabin air filters. Instead, cabins were exposed to incoming particles caused by dust from other cars and exhaust from semi tractors.

While it doesn’t directly enhance or diminish your engine’s performance like other filters, its presence is a huge contributor to the cleanliness of your cabin’s air and integrity of the air conditioner.

Signs it’s time to replace

The most common signs that it’s time for a new cabin air filter is a musty odor coming from the vents.

This occurs when contaminants and pollutants cause the filter to become clogged or overcome with debris.

The Car Care Council also suggests that a restriction of air flow from your HVAC system is a key indicator that there is trouble. Luckily, replacing the filtration unit is much more inexpensive than resolving issues

Out of sight, out of mind. Underneath your vehicle is a crucial system of pipes that allow your vehicle to operate optimally. Without them, the roadways and environment would be completely different than how we view them today.

Make an exhaust inspection a part of your regular maintenance. Once your vehicle is on the rack for an oil change, a technician has a clear view of any defects or foreseeable problems. Cracks, leaks or loose joints can cause a world of problems and may even deem your vehicle inoperable in certain areas.

The role of an exhaust system

Snow tires a worthy investment Automotive experts say that snow tires are a worthy investment that improve maneuverability and stopping power on winter roads. Many people leave all-season tires on their vehicles throughout the year, but snow tires may help decrease snow-related accidents and may even help drivers save money on their auto insurance.

Consumer Reports says that autumn is the best time to buy snow tires. As drivers prepare their vehicles for winter, the following snow tire tutorial can shed some light on why driving in winter is safer with snow tires.

• Snow tires are particularly helpful for people who cannot wait for roads to be cleared before they begin their day.

Snow tires provide greater traction in wet, snowy or slushy conditions. Snow tires provide ample grip and make it easier for cars to turn corners and stop on slick roads.

• As the mercury falls, the rubber used to make traditional tires can become hard and less pliable, compromising its ability to grip the road. Make driving in inclement weather safer Impaired visibility can be a safety hazard while driving. Everything from sun glare to hail can affect a driver’s ability to see the road and navigate it effectively.

Before drivers get behind the wheel, they should make note of their local forecast and make a plan for what to do if rain, snow or other conditions make it challenging to drive.

The International Association of Traffic and Safety Sciences indicates that, based on an examination of crash test data conducted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the “likelihood of a crash increases during periods of low visibility, despite the tendency for less traffic and for lower speeds to prevail during these times.”

Drivers can take several steps to improve their visibility when driving in poor weather conditions.

Inspect and change windshield wiper blades

Wipers are instrumental in clearing precipitation away from the windshield.

If they’re not functioning properly, wipers cannot do their jobs. Drivers should replace their wipers at the first indication that they are no longer effective. In some conditions, wipers can freeze or stick.

Drivers should then pull over and clean the wipers manually.

Clear obstructions

Always make sure the windshield is clear before driving. This can include removing ice and snow in the winter and cleaning off mud or bug splatter in the spring and summer. Use the front and rear defrost if condensation fogs up windshields and windows.

Slow down

Foul weather can reduce drivers’ ability to see far into the distance. Drivers should always drive slower in inclement weather in order to improve reaction time.

Top off fluids

Always keep the windshield washer reservoir full and keep extra fluid in the trunk. In addition, look for a fluid that does not freeze in very cold temperatures.

Learn how to drive in fog

Each year, more than 38,700 vehicle crashes occur in fog, states the Federal Highway Administration. Travelers Insurance recommends slowing down, staying focused and using regular headlights and not high beams when driving in fog.

Go out only if necessary

In snowy or icy conditions, drive only if it’s absolutely necessary, as snow and ice can impair visibility and make roads slick, says AAA.

Avoid driving at dusk and dawn

The human eye can have trouble adjusting to rapidly changing light and darkness conditions, which are common at dusk and dawn. If possible, drivers should make trips during the heart of the day, especially if poor lighting conditions typically make it difficult for them to drive.

In attendance were students from participating high schools and Pierre so they could understand the elements of the auto/diesel industries. Activities were simulators for the on-highway semi and heavy equipment. There was an equipment excavator that was able to be operated for real life action, remote crane operation, trucks, and equipment to climb on and explore. The automotive shop gave students the chance to interact with technicians and explore vehicles brought in from dealerships, giving the students a personal experience of types of vehicles they would be working on.

Dental erosion basics

our smile is the front door to your body; the first thing many people notice and often judge. Regular trips to the dentist are the best way to ensure your oral health is at its best, but sometimes daily habits sabotage our mouths.

Learn the effects of enamel erosion and the steps you can take to prevent the condition in between visits to the dentist.

The Oral Health Foundation (OHF) defines dental erosion as the loss of tooth enamel caused by acid attack.

Enamel is the shell of the tooth which acts as a protective layer of sensitive dentine beneath. As teeth begin succumbing to erosion, it’s common for them to appear stained or yellow. This is because the white coating of enamel is wearing down and the paler dentine is becoming more prevalent.

Causes of erosion

It may surprise you that each time

you ingest something acidic, tooth enamel becomes softer for a period.

Eventually, saliva will begin to balance the acid content and it will return to its normal state. The problems begin when the attacks happen too often and your mouth doesn’t have enough time to repair itself, causing small amounts of enamel to be brushed away.

Here are some tips from the OHF that you can use to prevent the issue from becoming a serious problem: • Chew sugar-free gum after meals, especially if you cannot brush right away.

• When consuming acidic drinks, avoid swishing it in your mouth. Use a straw to help them reach the back of your mouth without contacting teeth.

How to keep back pain at bay

ack pain is a part of life for many people. The American Chiropractic Association says 31 million Americans experience low back pain at any given time, and experts estimate that up to 80 percent of the population will experience back pain at some point in their lives. WebMD says back pain is the second most common reason people visit the doctor.

Back pain can take on various forms, ranging from a dull ache to a sharp pain. Some may experience intermittent back pain, while others may have chronic back pain. The causes can be considerable, from injury to underlying medical conditions. Alleviating back pain — or preventing it in the first place — involves understanding the common causes and taking appropriate actions.

Try exercise

Routine exercise is not guaranteed to eliminate back pain, but it can make it less frequent, advises doctors at Harvard Medical School. Low back pain due to muscle strain or muscle spasm can be tamed by exercise. Yoga, or a similar stretch-based exercise, can be very effective at alleviating back pain. Yoga relaxes muscle tension and expands range of motion in the joints. It also can build muscle strength.

Maintain proper posture

Slouching over computers or looking down at phones while texting may be doing damage to the back. Work ergonomically and take breaks to stretch. Sit up straight in chairs and try to keep a straight back while walking as well.

Shed some pounds

Extra pounds at the midsection can shift the center of gravity and put strain on the lower back, advises WebMD. Try to stay within a range of 5-10 pounds of your ideal weight.

Don’t smoke

The Arthritis Foundation says research shows a high prevalence of spinal stenosis and back pain among smokers. It is believed that smoking can damage blood vessels that supply blood to the back. Smoking is also bad for the bones and is a risk factor for osteoporosis.

Try a different sleeping position

Talk with a doctor about the best position for sleeping to ease up back pain. It may include being on your side with knees pulled up, or placing a pillow under your knees if you’re a back-sleeper.

Lift cautiously

Always bend at the knees and use the legs to lift items. This can help you avoid straining your back.

Back pain can be overwhelming, but with some strategies a person can reduce his or her propensity for pain.
