PETS WEEK OF THE

Hank and Bear

Hank is a 3 year old male and Bear is an 8.5 year old female. They have been together for a couple of years and we would love it if they could find a home together. Hank is the more outgoing and rambunctious of the two and Bear would be happy laying on the couch all day with the occasional outside break.

Lucy

This sweet girl is more of a follower than a leader but she is a good girl who is very smart. She is 2 years old and has all of her shots but still needs to be fixed. Lucy will need lots of land to run and cannot be around chickens/ducks.

Fern

She came to us with her babies and she is a little standoffish at first but once she becomes comfortable she is a sweetheart. She is a year old and is ready to have a chance at being a real cat with a good family! Come in and visit this pretty girl!

Luvy

She is one of the sweetest cats we have at our shelter. All she wants is to give love and be loved. She is up to date on all shots, fixed, and is a year old. Luvy loves to cuddle and will sit on your shoulders if you let her. She is a really great cat who deserves a great home!

Make a difference for life. Adopt a shelter pet today! All Pets are spayed or neutered before they leave the shelter. Lost pets and strays fill the shelter, can you help with time or donations? Some have to choose between food for family or food for pets. To discourage animal abandonment, a Pet Food Pantry is available at the shelter for those who need it. Won’t you help us stock the Pet Food Pantry? Just drop off food at WHHS. Immunize, spay/neuter, shelter from the cold, and LOVE your pets!

For the bookworm in your life Sometimes, our best friends are books and sometimes, they’re people with their nose in a book. If your bestie loves to spend time with a good book, here are some great gifts that will tickle their fancy.

Lighting

Portable lighting makes all the difference to the dedicated reader. Look for portable book lights with clips to grip the book, LED lights for economical

brightness, and, for advanced features, light temperatures to help with eye fatigue. For readers who tend to stay up too late with their books, there are alarm clocks that slowly fade out the light and fade it back in to gently put you to sleep and wake you up.

Library Themed Gifts

You can get mugs, shirts and even socks with library checkout cards on them. Also look for

bookmarks and other reading accessories, such as journals and notebooks, in the same theme to make a package. You can even find library- and book-scented candles. Most voracious readers have logged serious library time, and these gifts will remind them of one of their favorite places.

Bestselling Books

Visit your local bookseller and, bearing in mind your bookworm’s favorite reads, pick up some of the staff’s recommendations. You can also choose fiction or nonfiction bestsellers or, joy of joys, a gift card so they can shop whenever they want.

Soft, Snuggly Blankets

Curling up with a good book on a cold winter’s day is made all the more enjoyable with a soft, snuggly

blanket. Look for blankets that are easy to maintain and go with your reading buddy’s home decor. Bonus points: Snag some comfy socks for maximum snuggliness.

Other Accessories

Bookmarks are always a good idea, and these days they come in cute clips, tiny plants and more. Also look for creative bookends to display their favorite reads in any room. You can also get a variety of bookthemed gifts, such as literary tote bags, postcards and even card games. Ask the booksellers in your town what they’d like to get for the holidays, and you’ll be well set on gifts for your bookworm.

Outsized Christmas gear

2021 Holiday Gift Guide Week 2, Page 3B

@ADOBE STOCK

Last year, in the grips of a global pandemic, the motto for holiday decorating was go big and stay home. This year, outsized gear is going to remain at the top of everyone’s decorating shopping lists. Here are a few things to look for to make your holiday decorating mega fun.

Giant Ornaments

Look for giant baubles everywhere these season. On lawns, on steps and porches, hanging from eaves, any and everywhere, except for on the tree. Because they’re bigger than the tree.

Giant Lights

This can go two ways. You can have actual physically large lights, which are great additions to outdoor displays. Or, you can have displays dripping with lots of regular-sized lights, inside and out and everywhere else. This year,

look for high-tech displays that will connect to each other and even synchronize to music.

Giant Inflatables

Blow up yard decorations get more and more popular — and bigger — every where. Now there are 18-foot-tall Frosties out there just waiting to post up in your yard. Also look for inflatables with motion, such as hands that wave. Also new this year are inflatables with projection that show lights, clips of movies and more.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR BUSINESS Wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving

605.559.0381 www.spearfishpt.com

Giant Wreaths

Along with everything else, wreaths have gotten bigger and more elaborate. And they’re no longer just on the front doors. Hang huge wreaths up near the roofline for a eye-drawing outdoor display. Wreaths also make great focal points for large interior walls and even doors inside the home. If you’re looking at lighted wreaths, make sure you get the kind with solar panels or battery packs. They don’t pack the oomph that their plugged-in counterparts do, but they’re easier

to plan without having to use a power cord.

Giant Lasers

It sounds like something from a science fiction movie, but laser displays are growing in popularity every year. Look for lasers to light up towering trees in your yard or the blank canvas that is your garage door. It’s also a great way to add dimension to your outdoor displays or even to put up an impressive display from ground level without climbing any ladders.

Tantalizing tarts A tart is a smaller, shallow pie with no top crust. Typically, tarts have a crown-like edge rather than the fluted edges of a traditional pie. Tarts have a fruit or custard filling — really any filing you can put in a regular pie can go in a tart — and sometimes are served in a personal size, like these bite-sized cranberry tarts that get their form from a miniature muffin pan. No specialized

cookware needed here. These festive treats would be perfect at a holiday party or piled on a platter passed around your next get-together. Their ingredients include seasonal favorites like cranberries and pecans, and a sprinkle of zested citrus would add a fragrant garnish. Also consider a bright herb such as lemon thyme for a bright spark of flavor on a cold winter’s day.

Black Hills Pioneer | The Weekly Prospector

Bite-Sized Cranberry Tarts Crust 1 1/2 cups flour 3/4 cup butter, softened 3 ounces cream cheese, softened Filling 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup chopped pecans 1 large egg 1/4 cup butter 1 teaspoon vanilla 3/4 cup fresh cranberries, washed, drained and cut in half Glaze 1 cup powdered sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 2-3 tablespoons 1. Heat your oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. 2. Combine flour, 3/4 cup, butter and cream cheese in a small bowl. Beat at medium speed until the dough forms a ball. 3. Divide the dough into 36 pieces. Place a piece of dough into each ungreased mini muffin cup and press the dough evenly onto

the bottom and up the sides. 4. Combine sugar, pecans, egg, 1/4 cup butter and vanilla in a small bowl. Place four to five cranberry halves in each pastrylined cup. Spoon two teaspoons sugar and pecan mixture over the cranberries. 5. Bake 22-25 minutes or until golden brown. Loosen the tarts from the pan while hot by running a knife around the inside of the rim. Cool completely and remove from the pan. 6. Combine the powdered sugar, vanilla and just enough milk to make a drizzle in a small bowl and drizzle over the cooled tarts.

Choosing a Christmas tree Putting up the tree is a great memory for many families. Now, there are lots to choose from, well beyond live tree or faux. But fear not, we’re here to help you find the perfect tannenbaum for your family’s holiday celebrations.

Live

Nothing smells quite like a live Christmas tree. If you choose to go the live route, know that your local Christmas tree vendor may have several varieties from which to choose. Get a tree suited to your family. If you have little hands (or paws) around, pick a tree with softer needles. Look for a tree that’s not so full that you can’t festoon it with decorations; it should have a few empty spaces to show off your cherished baubles. Find one with a straight trunk to avoid complications getting it in the tree stand and it should be fresh. Check for freshness by breaking a needle in half with your fingers. A fresh fir will snap; fresh pines should bend without breaking.

Reusable Trees

If bringing a live tree indoors isn’t your thing, the fake trees are getting more fancy every year. The

needles look more real and, just like everything else, even Christmas trees are more tech savvy. There are trees you can control with your digital assistant, that will sync their lights to music and that are controlled by remotes. Take that, disco tinsel tree. When you’re done with your tree for the year, take it down and store it according to the manufacturer’s directions. If your tree is technologically advanced, this may mean

considering storing it in a climate controlled closet or other space to avoid damage.

Recycling Your Trees

Once the season’s over, it’s time to responsibly recycle your live trees. Many cities and towns will offer a service to mulch your tree for you, or sometimes there’s a drive to create

fish and wetlands habitat using old Christmas trees. Look into the recycling programs offered in your area and choose the one that works best for you. Whatever you do, don’t just put it into the trash.

Post-pandemic gifts for friends and loved ones Families, businesses, schools, and just about everyone had to modify daily life in dramatic ways due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of the most significant effects of COVID-19 — beyond the health implications — have been the changes in outings and gatherings and the ways holidays were celebrated. The 2021 holiday season figures to be especially jovial as the world continues to emerge from the pandemic. As shoppers hit the holiday shopping trail once more, they can look to the pandemic for gift-buying inspiration.

Travel-related gifts

Travel restrictions greatly limited where people could go, so millions embraced staycations as a means to taking breaks from school and work. Travel restrictions have now been lifted in many parts of the world, and vaccinated individuals may feel more comfortable traveling again. Consider gifts that include travel essentials, such as luggage, plane tickets, toiletries, hotel vouchers, and even gift cards to use on vacation purchases.

Preparatory gifts

conscious” as a result of the pandemic. Cases of COVID-19 are on the decline, but it still pays to be cautious and sanitary. Gifts that promote cleanliness may continue to be appreciated and also prepare a person should another pandemic occur in the future. Stylish reusable face masks; special sanitary “keys” that limit contact with things like ATMs, doors and elevator buttons; ultraviolet disinfecting lamps; and even purses and bags that can be cleaned without damage are all gift ideas that make cleanliness more convenient.

Home improvement supplies

help people see projects through to completion.

Dining out vouchers

Even though many restaurants pivoted to takeout service or established outdoor seating to meet safety requirements, dining establishments still felt the pain of the pandemic. More people have now returned to traditional dining, and restrictions on indoor dining have gradually been loosened. Therefore, gifts that focus on dining out, such as certificates for favorite

In the wake of canceled vacation plans, homeowners channeled their vacation dollars into home improvements. Those who still have plans to redo and renovate will appreciate gifts that may include gift cards to popular home improvement and design retailers. In addition, as certain home improvement materials like lumber have gotten more expensive, a cash gift to offset the cost of materials can

Support new hobbies

Many people took on new hobbies and explored new activities to pass the time during the pandemic. Encourage these hobbies by gifting tools and supplies. If a person adopted a new pet, try pettoy subscriptions or even purchase pet health insurance. Though the pandemic is something many people would love to forget, holiday shoppers can look to it for inspiration when buying gifts this year.

People are much more “germ-

We start off, much like the holiday season, with roasted turkey. Turkeys are a New World food and were eaten by ancient peoples in the Americas for centuries before European conquerors brought turkeys back home with them. Turkey was eaten in England as early as the 16th century and, during the 17th century, turkey became a common Christmastide food in Britain. In the U.S., turkey was a common Thanksgiving dish as early as the 1800s.

Ham

The word ham comes from the Old English ham or hom, meaning lthe bend of the knee, fitting since it refers to a leg of pork. People have been eating ham almost as long as there have been people and pigs; even the ancient Romans had a recipe. Hams can be dry cured in salt, wet cured in a brine or smoked. Usually, in the U.S., hams for holiday consumption are baked in a sweet

outer coating, sometimes of honey or brown sugar.

Prime Rib

This is a cut of beef from the primal rib containing anywhere from two to seven ribs. Ribeye steaks are also cut from the standing ribs. Prime rib is a traditional Christmas roast among the Irish, as beef was dear and it was a holiday treat. Prime rib is made by slow-roasting the meat on the primal rib and then portioning it after cooking, whereas ribeye steaks are what you get when you cut it before cooking.

Roasted Goose

In Germany, roasted geese often sit on the Christmas table, and the birds are also popular in England. They are usually seasoned with apples, sweet chestnuts, prunes and onions, along with mugwort or marjoram. They can be served alongside potatoes and other root vegetables roasted in the goose fat, which has a high smoking point and thus makes these veggies nice and crisp. Goose itself is a dark meat with an intense flavor that’s not akin to turkey or chicken.

How to make the most of Small Business Saturday Gifts and gatherings take center stage come the holiday season. The holiday season begins on Thanksgiving and continues until New Year’s Day. During that time, families gather to exchange gifts, break bread, celebrate their faith, and toast the

year to come. The good times and gatherings that are such a big part of the holiday season were absent from many celebrations in 2020. Though the COVID-19 pandemic is ongoing, the successful rollout of various vaccines should make the coming holiday season feel more normal. That means gift exchanges and

gatherings are back in play. Savvy celebrants recognize the benefits of shopping early, and Small Business Saturday is a great chance to get back in the holiday swing of things while supporting the local businesses that make communities so unique.

Plan ahead

Small Business Saturday takes place each year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving in the United States. Since its inception in 2010, Small Business Saturday has grown in popularity. American Express estimates that 110 million people participated in Small Business Saturday in 2019, which underscores how shoppers can benefit from planning ahead. Research sales and inventories of local businesses you want to support so you’re ready to go come Saturday morning. Doing your homework can make it easier to navigate the crowds.

Reserve a table at your favorite restaurant

A great meal with

friends and family can be an ideal way to cap off a day of shopping, and it’s a great way to support a local restaurant. It’s worth noting that a National Today survey of 1,000 shoppers that focused on Small Business Saturday shopping habits found that food and groceries were the most popular things to buy local. Saturday is traditionally a popular night to dine out, and that popularity is even greater on Small Business Saturday. Shoppers can ensure they aren’t waiting for a table by booking a reservation in advance.

Check your social media feeds

Many small businesses have recognized the value of communicating directly with consumers through their social media feeds. Throughout the day, shoppers can keep an eye on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to learn about special sales or events. In addition, shoppers can share their shopping experiences via their own feeds. Many small businesses rely on word-of-mouth from existing customers, so this can be another way to show your support for the establishments that call your community home. Small Business Saturday is a great way to begin the holiday shopping season on the right foot.

Deck the halls with DIY decor Decorating is one of the joys of the holiday season. Families often decorate together, and such traditions may include dressing the Christmas tree and hanging holiday lights around the house. A day spent making homemade ornaments is another great way to decorate and spend quality time together as a family during the holiday season. Though families can let their imaginations run wild when making ornaments at home, the following are some great starting points that can serve as springboards for holiday crafting sessions.

Snowmen

The holiday season simply wouldn’t be the same without snowmen. Homemade snowmen can be made out of ping pong balls, which are the ideal size when making ornaments for the Christmas tree. Those who want to go a little bigger can glue wiffle balls or large polystyrene balls together or create their own papier mâché snowmen to display on mantles or on console tables in a foyer or hallway.

Santa Claus

Another staple of holiday decor, Santa Claus has inspired many a DIY holiday ornament over the years. A paper plate Santa Claus with a cotton ball beard glued on can make for a fun Christmas craft, especially for young children who can’t wait for the big guy to appear on Christmas Eve.

Penguins

Though they might not have a direct link to the holiday season, penguins evoke feelings of cold weather, making them an ideal addition to holiday decor schemes. Make your own penguin family using polystyrene craft balls in assorted sizes and then hang them on the tree or place them around the house.

Reindeer

Santa would not be able to get the job done each Christmas Eve without his trustworthy team of reindeer. Popsicle stick reindeer projects can be fun for kids of all ages and a great way for youngsters to recognize the efforts of Dasher, Dancer, Comet, Cupid, and, of course, Rudolph, among others.

The holiday season grants us the opportunity to say THANK YOU to our community!

Family baking sessions are a holiday tradition for millions of people. Though that often leads to batches upon batches of tasty cookies, it also means families tend to have a surplus of holiday cookie cutters around the house. Surplus cookie cutters tend to be discarded or relegated to the miscellaneous items drawer in kitchens, but a more awe-inspiring fate can await them. A coat of paint, some glitter and a little bit of string or twine is all families need to transform their extra cookie cutters into colorful tree ornaments.

When to travel this holiday season Many people travel to see family and friends during the holiday season, and the 2021 holiday season figures to be an especially busy one for travel. Celebrants are anxious to spend the holidays with their loved ones in 2021 after canceling such plans a year ago, when the COVID-19 pandemic forced many families to scrap traditional gatherings and spend holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas at home. As vaccinations rates continue to grow across the globe, the likelihood of a very busy holiday travel season increases as well. For instance, Club Med reported a significant uptick in holiday season bookings as early as May. Club Med bookings around Thanksgiving had already increased by 18 percent in May, while bookings around Christmas had increased by 9 percent. That bodes well for the travel industry, though it could mean travelers have to do some significant advance planning if they intend to leave home this holiday season. • The Monday before Thanksgiving might be the best day to fly. AAA found that Monday has the lowest average ticket price prior to the holiday and is a lighter travel day than later in the week. Those who don’t mind departing on Thanksgiving Day also can benefit from the lowest average airline fare of

any day that week. • Nearly 50 million people were expected to travel by automobile for the Thanksgiving holiday in 2019. People who intend to do so on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving should know that traveling near major cities during rush hour that day can lead to heavy delays. Delays were roughly 3.5 times longer than normal in cities like Atlanta, Los Angeles, New York, and Houston between the hours of 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. on the night before Thanksgiving. • The 10-day period between December 21 and January 1 featured a record number of American travelers in 2019. Roughly 115.6 million people traveled in that period, and that number could be even greater in 2021 as the world continues to emerge from the pandemic. AAA reports that more than 104 million of those travelers traveled by car, so travelers who want to drive should keep that in mind and potentially look to hit the road prior to December 21. • People traveling by car in or near major cities around the Christmas holiday should know that the days after Christmas tend to be the busiest in such locales, though the delays pale in comparison to those on the day before Thanksgiving. For example, the peak congestion period in Chicago around the Christmas holiday in 2019 was between 4:45 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. on December 26. However, the delays during that time period were just 1.3 times greater than normal. While that’s still nothing to celebrate, it’s a far cry from the more significant delays travelers can expect on the day preceding Thanksgiving.

Toast the season with a literary-inspired cocktail Reading familiar stories and watching classic Christmas movies are part and parcel of many celebrations. For example, “A Christmas Carol,” a novella by Charles Dickens that was published in 1843, is a must-read and mustsee for many people each holiday season. The story is the tale of the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge, who is visited by various ghosts, each of whom teaches Scrooge an important lesson about living life to its fullest. Many local theater companies put on productions of the classic Dickens tale around the holiday season. Holiday celebrants and fans of “A Christmas Carol” can raise a toast to Charles Dickens by enjoying one of his favorite cocktails, the “Sherry Cobbler,” courtesy of Margaret Kaplan’s “How to Drink Like a Writer: Recipes for the Cocktails and Libations that Inspired 100 Literary Greats” (Apollo Publishing). While Dickens did not mention the Sherry Cobbler in “A Christmas Carol,” the beverage does make an appearance in another of his works,

“The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit.”

Add sherry and ice and shake. Strain ingredients into a Collins glass filled with crushed ice. Garnish with seasonal berries, maraschino cherries and a lemon wheel.

Hosting the holidays this year To the relief of many, the upcoming holiday season figures to feel more normal than it did a year ago. The COVID-19 pandemic forced families to celebrate the 2020 holiday season in quarantine. Longtime family traditions like big gatherings might have been shelved in 2020, but the successful rollout of various vaccines has put such celebrations back in play in 2021. Though it would be great to imagine a 2021 holiday season with COVID-19 well in the rearview mirror, the spread of potentially deadly variants of the virus and the relatively high number of eligible yet unvaccinated adults and children could make hosting the holidays a bit tricky. The following are some strategies hosts can employ to make this holiday season both special and safe.

Host small celebrations instead of one large one

Families accustomed to gathering en

masse during the holiday season may benefit by hosting a small gathering or two instead of one big one. This can be especially important if families include a lot of unvaccinated people, like small children.

Ask guests to wear a mask if anyone is concerned

The debate about masks is ongoing. While the vast majority of mask mandates had

been lifted in the spring of 2021, concerns about the Delta variant prompted government officials and public health agencies to reconsider their mask guidelines. Families need not wait for government-issued mandates to help relatives ease their anxiety about variants of the virus. Hosts can explain to family members that if anyone on the guest list expresses concerns about the virus that they will ask everyone else

to wear masks while celebrating indoors. Anyone unwilling to comply can celebrate outside or stay home and visit after concerned relatives have gone home.

Stick to the great outdoors

Families that gather in mild climates for the holidays can reduce the likelihood of spreading the virus by keeping celebrations outdoors. Public health agencies like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization have noted the virus is considerably less likely to spread outdoors, as researchers have learned fresh air disperses and dilutes the virus. So celebrating outdoors this holiday season can provide a measure of protection for family members who are not vaccinated.

Make-ahead meals for tasty holiday dinners Individuals may be presented with plenty of opportunities to cook for a crowd over the course of a typical year. But no time of year is more synonymous with large sit-down meals than the holiday season. Certain foods, such as pasta dishes and casseroles, are ideal dishes to cook for crowds. However, for those home cooks who want to prepare in advance and then enjoy themselves on the actual holiday, it may be best to choose foods that taste better the day after the dish has been cooked.

Stew

A stew that’s been simmering on the stove or in the slow cooker all day will have a winning flavor. But stew can be even more delicious the next day. The starch in the potatoes will enable the sauce of the stew — whether it’s tomato-based or comprised of a mix of brown gravy and meat drippings — to thicken. The meat may continue to cook and tenderize while reheating.

Meatloaf

The herbs and spices in a meat

loaf continue to release their flavors, and letting the loaf sit can improve the texture and the ability to slice it without it falling apart. Consider panfrying individual slices of meatloaf until they’re browned so they’ll be crisp on the outside and tender in the middle.

Lasagna

Lasagna is a layered pasta dish featuring flat noodle sheets, cheese, sauce, and sometimes meat like ground beef or sausage. Lasagnas that are served right out of the oven can be runny even if they taste scrumptious. Baking it and letting it sit overnight allows all of the layers to gel together, making for a much more cohesive and fortified dish the following day.

Curries

Curries are typically made with many spices that help to make the dish flavorful. A curry that is freshly made may feature intense flavor because each of its components can be tasted individually. After a night of resting in the refrigerator, those flavors meld and mellow.
