PETS WEEK OF THE

Gracie

A 3-year-old pitbull/husky mix. She loves to run and is very smart. She does know how to escape chain-linked fences and cannot be in an area that has chickens/ducks. Gracie is very sweet and loves attention and is a good dog but she needs a lot of room to run.

Panda

This sweet boy is shy at first but once he is comfortable he is so much fun! He loves to play but is also very sweet and cuddly. Panda would make a great family cat. Stop in to meet this handsome guy!

Poplar

This sweet girl is looking for her forever home. She is very loving and would make a great companion for someone. She is a little bit more relaxed and has come into her own personality so she is not as playful as our other cats, so if you are looking for a lap cat she is your girl!

Stripey

This pretty girl is a rehabilitated feral. She is still a little nervous around people but with love and attention she is sweetest cat. Once she warms up to you she is very cuddly and very playful.

Make a difference for life. Adopt a shelter pet today! All Pets are spayed or neutered before they leave the shelter. Lost pets and strays fill the shelter, can you help with time or donations? Some have to choose between food for family or food for pets. To discourage animal abandonment, a Pet Food Pantry is available at the shelter for those who need it. Won’t you help us stock the Pet Food Pantry? Just drop off food at WHHS. Immunize, spay/neuter, shelter from the cold, and LOVE your pets!

Eat (and drink) local

With four weeks to go before Christmas arrives, you should: • Shop for your holiday outfits • Help your kids write and mail their letters to Santa • Buy (or make) your Christmas cards, write a personal note in each, and send them out • Decorate the inside of your home and set up your Christmas tree (if artificial) • Gather toys, clothes, etc. that your children no longer use and donate them to a local charity • Consider which menu items you can freeze and start your holiday cooking accordingly

When you’re planning your holiday shindigs, make sure you turn to local restaurants, food trucks and cafes for your catering needs. If you’re not planning a big soirée, make sure you factor them in to your holiday shopping plans by stopping in for a bite while you’re out filling up the sleigh or even gifting gift cards from your favorite local spots. Here are some hints for eating locally that you may not have thought of from USA Today.

Bake with local grains

Holiday baking is a family favorite. This year, look for locally grown grains and flavors to add to your rotation of recipes. Visiting a farmers market is a great way to learn what’s grown nearby, from grits to locally processed flours.

Visit the local butcher

Big holiday meals call for

Now celebrating

quality proteins. Locally based ranchers and fisherfolk offer fresh, often organic, meats and seafoods that are well worth every penny. The experts at the butcher’s can even tell you how to stretch your dollar by suggesting lower-priced cuts and fish that taste the same (or even better) than their expensive cousins. While you’re there, ask for any specials they may have and suggestions for recipes. You will probably learn a thing or two and come out with a new favorite holiday dish.

Go to the baker

While you’re at the farmers market or out visiting the butcher, check out deals at local bakeries, too. Pick up some breads to go on your holiday table, or look for showstopping confections with a

local flavor that can’t be beat. These make great host or hostess gifts, too, and are always welcome at the party.

Stock the bar with local beer and liquor

Craft brewing is experiencing a surge in popularity, as is smallbatch liquor. Most every town or city nowadays can boast of at least one local brewery, and these are great places to find holiday gifts and libations. Look for small batch or special releases you can only get by dropping by. While you’re there, ask the staff for their favorite cocktail recipe using their wares.

A history of caroling You may not have gone a-wassailing, but you’ve almost certainly heard some sleigh bells jing-jing-jingling, either in real life or sang ad nauseum (almost) during the holiday season. As it turns out, carols have been around almost as long as Christmas itself.

A hymnal history

The first recorded carol dates to around the year 100 with the “Angels Hymn.” It was around then, ClassicFM says, that Christian hymns started to take over for traditional pagan songs sung at the winter solstice. Over time, more Nativitythemed songs emerged, and the Middle Ages brought us “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” and other songs. Many of the songs we know today and the practice of singing them in public places comes from the 19th century.

Carols we have heard forever, for a job well done. This tradition, eventually known as wassailing or at least since the 1800s

The 19th century is when Christmas started to look — and sound — more familiar to modern eyes and ears. Mendelssohn wrote “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” in 1840, not too long after Frank Xavier Gruber and Joseph Mohr composed “Silent Night.” During this time, a group of carolers was called a wait, and the singers would perform in public spaces for passers-by, who would reward them with food and drink

(now know where that came from), evolved into the groups going door to door to sing carols. As the groups would go around, they would demand free drink and food from residents, and eventually, the caroling would devolve into sort of a drunken shouting match.

But why do they all sound kind of the same?

It’s not your imagination. Christmas carols are almost

universally recognizable as Christmas carols, no matter what subject they tackle or what language they are sung in. That’s because many of our carols are based on medieval chord patterns that give them a unique sound, J.W. Pepper says. Minor chords or diminished chords are sprinkled throughout most Christmas songs in a way that give them a distinct feel and immediately identifies them as Christmassy, music experts say.

Making ornaments Gift ideas for young professionals

Some of the best holiday memories are hands-on holiday memories. Baking cookies and cakes, wrapping presents, and, this year, making your own ornaments.

Mini walnut reindeer

Make your own fleet of tiny reindeer. Start with a walnut, in the shell, and drill a small hole through the top. Glue on googly eyes, a red pompom nose, and felt ears to finish it off. Run a piece of twine through the hole in the walnut and you’ve got your own rudolph. Use your imagination and make more reindeer with bows, sparkly noses and more. The only limit is your local craft store’s inventory.

about an hour. Cool before handling.

Wooden bead snowmen

These won’t melt away, but you might from the sweetness. Paint three wooden craft beads (any size will do, it depends on how big you want your snowmen) with white craft paint and allow to dry. Thread a piece of twine through the beads and knot it to hold them together. Attach black gem mini gems or beads for the buttons and eyes, then snip orange felt and attach it for a carrot nose. Attach two twigs for arms and, if you’d like, a felt hat. Feel free to personalize your snowmen and date each ornament.

Holiday shoppers relish the moment when a loved one unwraps a gift and immediately smiles widely. Hitting the nail on the head in regard to a holiday gift is its own reward, and there’s no shame in looking around for some inspiration to find a gift loved ones will truly cherish. Shopping for young professionals this holiday season could be a little tricky, as changes sparked by the pandemic continue to affect work environments. However, shoppers can still find gifts to make young professionals happy this holiday season.

Home office essentials

Decoupaged tissue ornaments

Use clear glass or plastic balls and tiny bits of ripped up tissue paper. Affix the tissue to the ornament using glossy mod podge, then tie a ribbon through the cap. Use different colors and layers for texture, or go all out and make a whole scene. See who can make the most creative ornaments this year.

Salt dough ornaments

These are a christmas classic. Mix up a batch of salt dough — 4 cups flour, 1 cup salt, ½ cups warm water — then roll it out and get to cutting. Use christmas themed cookie cutters and don’t forget to find some way to get those little thumbprints in there for the best memories. Use a straw to poke a hole through the top for hanging, then bake at 300 degrees for

Many businesses have welcomed workers back to the office, but some are taking a hybrid approach to being in the office. Many professionals who once went into the office five days a week are now spending one or two days a week at home. Others may still be working remotely full-time. Holiday shoppers can take this into consideration when shopping for young professionals and look for some basic home office essentials. A comfortable office chair, a monitor that can be paired with a company-issued laptop and even a single-serve coffee pot for young people accustomed to getting their morning coffee on the way into the office can help professionals seamlessly transition from the office to their home office during the work week.

leather messenger bag is a stylish and sophisticated way for young professionals to carry their laptops and other workday essentials to and from work. Professionals working in especially formal environments may prefer a leather briefcase, which creates a more traditional look for young people who will be entertaining clients or shuffling from one business meeting to another.

Business card holder

Though they might not be as prevalent as they once were, business cards remain an effective way for young professionals to build their networks. An elegant, monogrammed business card holder can help young professionals make a strong first impression.

Luggage

Business travel may not be back to its pre-pandemic levels just yet, but many young professionals will undoubtedly still appreciate an upgrade over the luggage they used in college. If designer luggage is a budget buster, look for a sturdy, elegant alternative that young professionals will be proud to tote around on their first official business trip.

Messenger bag

Looking the part can boost young professionals’ confidence as they begin their careers. A

Benefits of in person holiday shopping The 2020 holiday season was unlike any other. The COVID-19 pandemic was still affecting daily life across the globe over the final months of 2020, prompting many families and individuals to alter holiday traditions they’d embraced for decades. That included how people shop. Many people avoided in person holiday shopping in 2020. However, the successful rollout of various COVID-19 vaccines has made in person shopping safe again. That’s good news for local businesses and great news for shoppers,.

In person shopping is convenient

Much is made of the convenience of online shopping. And it’s undeniable that the ability to shop at all hours of the day and night is convenient. However, in person shopping, especially when shopping for others, is much more convenient than shoppers may realize. When shopping in person, shoppers can get a feel for an item, size it up and even inspect its quality prior to purchasing it. That can save shoppers from that disappointing feeling of receiving an item in the mail only to realize it’s poorly made or oddly sized and therefore unlikely to fit its eventual recipient.

In person shopping isn’t all about shipping

Shipping speed is a significant factor for online shoppers, and that may affect just which gift they give come the holiday season. According to a Dotcom report titled “How Fast Delivery and Quality Packaging Drives Customer Loyalty,” 87 percent of shoppers surveyed indicated shipping was a key factor when deciding whether to shop with an e-commerce brand again. That’s an important consideration, as shoppers may be more inclined to buy an item from a retailer simply because of their shipping speed capabilities and not because of the quality of the item and whether or not it’s what they want to give to their loved one. Shopping in person removes shipping from the equation, ensuring gift givers will give a gift they truly want to give and not just the one that will arrive on time.

In person shopping allows for more accessible browsing

Within minutes of entering a store and walking around, shoppers may see a handful of gifts that will ultimately be great for various people on their lists, even if they had no idea what to get prior to entering. That

ability to browse is more difficult when shopping online, especially when buying from online retailers with massive inventories of a range of products. Such sites often require visitors to pick a category to streamline their searches. That’s not always easy or enjoyable for shoppers who cherish the opportunity to uncover hidden gems or more unique gifts that aren’t available all over the internet.

they weren’t able to see last holiday season.

In person shopping gets shoppers out of the house

Since the onset of the pandemic, people have spent more time than ever within the confines of their homes. The 2021 holiday shopping season provides a great opportunity to get out of the house and disconnect from devices. Shoppers can even do so alongside friends and family members

Gift guide: gifts for your family Family are those closest to us but also are often the hardest people to buy holiday gifts for. If you’re having a tough time buying for everyone in your family, consider suggesting gift-giving plans like drawing names or gifts on a theme or within a certain budget. And consider these ideas for giving the best family gifts ever.

Mugging for the holidays

Get them through a cold winter’s night with a mug full of hot cocoa. Look for personalized or monogrammed coffee mugs emblazoned with either the first letter of everyone’s name or the first letter of the family’s last name. Complete the gift with bags of cocoa mix and gourmet marshmallows.

Movie night

Get a popcorn bowl and fill it up with movie theater-sized boxes of their favorite candy, popcorn seasonings and cards for rentals to a local movie service such as Netflix or Redbox. Looking to make a bigger impression? Include a streaming device so they can watch their favorites all year long.

Growing memories

The long, cold nights of winter may not be when you think of flowers, but for families with a green thumb, a gardening kit may be just the thing. Put together a gardening box with ceramic pots (bonus points: paint them with everyone’s name in acrylic paint, then seal it with a waterproof clear coat), tools and seeds so they can grow their own memories once the days warm up.

Craft night

Paste together some good times by creating a great family craft box. Put in paints, crayons, colored

2021 Holiday Gift Guide Week 3, Page 9B pencils, coloring books for all ages and maybe throw in some how-to books and supplies to help your favorite family find a whole new hobby.

Some things to consider: modeling clay, loom weaving and paint-bynumbers kits.

Family game night

Look for a sale on classic family games — think checkers or scrabble — and make a pile along with plenty of snacks to keep everyone fueled up for a whole night of family fun. For extra oomph, include some coupons or gift cards to have dinner delivered as well. Mom and dad will thank you for it.

Break a few eggnogs this Christmas Eggnog is the modern equivalent of the early medieval posset, a hot, milky, ale-like drink. In the 13th century, monks drank a posset of eggs and figs and milk, eggs and sherry were foods of the wealthy, so early eggnogs were hoisted in toasts to prosperity and good health. Sounds like a great wish for the holiday season. Time Magazine dates the arrival of eggnog on American shores to the 1700s. The young America was full of farms (and chickens and cows) and cheap rum from the Caribbean

and sugar-growing regions. Mexico created rompope, a nog-like drink, and Puerto Rico has coquito, which adds coconut milk. By the 18th century, Americans had eggnog, a name whose origins have been lost to time. It may come from noggin, meaning a wooden cup, or grog, a strong drink. George Washington has a famous eggnog recipe that’s not for the faint of heart. Or liver. One problem is that he didn’t record the number of eggs to include, but given the amount of liquor, cooks started with a dozen.

Deck the halls with silver and gold Like the holiday song says, there will be silver and gold decorations on e’ery Christmas tree this holiday season. There are many ways to use these classic holiday colors in your decorating this year and, believe it or not, there’s still some room for innovation. Look for a silver and gold refresher in different finishes, such as matte, and with new textures, such as hammered metals.

On the tree

Shiny is right at home on the tree. Festoon your tannenbaum with silver and gold jingle bells to add a festive sound for your holiday parties. Also look for the warmth of gold lights on the tree, or pair silver decor with bright white lights. And nothing says you have to keep it one way or the other. Mix both silver and gold decorations with warm jewel tones for a luxe Christmas look that’s hard to beat.

In foliage

Accent rich holiday greenery

with the warmth of gold pine ones, faux fruit and other accents, or take advantage of cool silvers paired with deep green evergreens or preserved leaves. Put a coat of metallic paint on existing floral accents to freshen them up for a new round of holiday festivities.

On food

Nothing says luxury like edible silver and gold on your food. Add a little bling to your holiday feasts and treats with touches made from edible gold and silver leaf, gold and silver sprinkling sugar, and sprayed gold and silver paint. You can find any and all of these products on the shelves of your local grocery store.

Outside

You’ve got to be careful with silver and gold accents outdoors. In sunnier climates, the glare can get to be a little much. But gold lights, especially in a monochromatic scheme, is a classy addition to your holiday decor. Also, consider using different sized lights to add

perspective and depth to your single-colored display. If you’re looking for silver lights, look for a strings with cool white lights. Pair them with classic blue lights for a great, classic color combo.

Inside

Nothing says cozy like candlelight. Pair warm or cool white candles with silver and gold candlesticks to magnify their light and provide maximum coziness for a cold winter’s night. Also look for classic holiday decorations, such as glass Christmas trees, sleighs and more in these metallic combos. You can pair them with just about any color scheme, too.

Gifts for your friends with green thumbs Houseplants are having a moment. As the pandemic wore on, more and more people started bringing the outdoors in with houseplants. Give budding green thumbs awesome gifts by using this handy list.

Watering tools

It seems easy, watering your plants. But some houseplants are finicky about the way they’re watered. Look for misters to make the plant mom or dad in your life’s job a little easier. If they like to travel, look for chic plant watering systems that will deliver water over the course of a few days so they can take a trip and not worry about their babies at home.

Garden markers

There are a variety of adorable garden markers on the market. You want to look for func-

tional, too, though. Consider the materials and choose plastic over wood to prevent cracking and fading. Also make sure they’re easy for your gardener to read, even from a distance.

Ceramic pots

New pots are always welcome in a gardener’s house. Look for cute pots that fit their personal style and make sure they also fit the plants they like to grow. Most plants like a pot with welldrained soil, so the pots you choose should have a drain hole or holes at the bottom. If they’re growing herbs and veggies, you should choose pots with food-safe finishes.

Lighting

To make it through the long nights of winter, some

plants need a little help staying green and growing. This is where grow lights can help. Grow lights include everything from a light bulb for an existing lamp to sophisticated systems with timers. If you’re unsure, talk to the experts at your local garden center about lights that can work for your gardener.

Tools

New tools are always welcome. Go beyond the ordinary trowels and look for things such as

kneeling pads to help sore knees, aprons, gloves or even a new potting bench to help store and organize their gardening goods. Hit up your local gardening store and do some browsing to find the latest and greatest gadgets to up their gardening game.

Stock up for holiday baking Many holiday traditions begin with family and friends gathered in the kitchen or around the dinner table. Food is an integral part of celebrating Thanksgiving, Christmas and Chanukah, and key components of each holiday are tied exclusively to food. Come the holiday season, many people gather to make delicious desserts for holiday dinners or even as gifts. The right ingredients are necessary to produce a bounty of baked goods. It’s also essential to ensure those ingredients are fresh, as age can compromise the taste of some spices, and leavening ingredients like yeast, baking soda and baking powder may lose efficacy over time.

Baking soda

This leavening agent is activated when it is combined with acid and heat. That is why it is often paired with citrus juice, buttermilk and sour cream.

Baking powder

This leavening agent is baking soda mixed with a powdered acid and cornstarch. If baking powder is the only leavening agent, it will

not require the addition of another acidic ingredient. “Double-acting” means carbon dioxide bubbles will form during mixing and again during heating.

Yeast

Yeast takes more time to metabolize and cause doughs to rise than other leavening agents.

Milk

Dairy adds moisture and texture to batters. Alternative milks, such as soy or almond milk, can sometimes be substituted, but the resulting texture may change.

Vegetable oil

Many recipes call for vegetable oil, which has a neutral flavor.

Sugar

Granulated sugar is the most common sugar found in recipes. Confectioner’s sugar (powdered sugar) is used in frosting and icings. Brown sugar is refined sugar with molasses added, and is used in certain recipes, like gingerbread.

Flours

All-purpose flour is versatile

and useful in many recipes. In addition, bread flour, cake flour and pastry flour have attributes that make them better suited for their respective jobs than all-purpose flour. Individuals who follow certain diets, including gluten-free diets, can find alternative flours that can be substituted in many different recipes.

Salt

Granulated table salt is used in everyday baking.

Unsalted butter

Unsalted butter will be the default for baked goods unless the recipe specifically mentions salted butter.

Eggs

Eggs help to bind ingredients together. Large eggs are most often cited in many baking recipes.

Shortening

Shortening is a solid vegetable fat used to make tender baked goods. Shortening also has a higher melting point, which helps items retain their shape.

Flavorings

It is helpful to have various spices and extracts on hand. Cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, and allspice are some common baking spices. Almond and vanilla extracts are quite versatile and add extra punch to recipes.

Additions

Mix-ins, such as chocolate chips, cocoa powder, oats, nuts, and dried fruits, often turn up in holiday recipes.

Did you know? Lights on a Christmas tree may seem like a relatively recent phenomenon, but people who can’t wait to deck the halls each December may be surprised to learn that this beloved tradition dates all the way back to the late nineteenth century. Edward Johnson, a friend and colleague of Thomas Edison, introduced holiday light bulbs in 1882. Prior to that, candles were lit on trees and families would briefly gaze at this awe-inspiring bit of holiday decor before the candles

were quickly extinguished. Johnson is credited with being the first to suggest light bulbs, which were invented by his friend Edison, be used to light trees in place of candles. While many were impressed by Johnson’s eight-bulb holiday display, it remained a novelty until the 1920s, when preassembled lights became more accessible. Since then, Christmas tree lights have taken hold as a must-have piece of holiday decor in households across the globe.
