PETS WEEK OF THE

Chester

A young Rottie mix that is very energetic. He is a little shy at first but if you become familiar he will love up on you. He came from a rough life and will need training. Chester is a great dog and needs to go to a family with older kids and people who are willing to be patient and work with him.

Devin

A three-year-old Siberian Husky who can walk on a leash and seems to be housetrained. He is very anxious but very sweet. Devin would love a big backyard for lots of exercise because he loves to run and play.

Make a difference for life. Adopt a shelter pet today! All Pets are spayed or neutered before they leave the shelter. Lost pets and strays fill the shelter, can you help with time or donations? Some have to choose between food for family or food for pets.

Blanche

To discourage animal abandonment, a Pet Food Pantry is available at the shelter for those who need it.

She is 10 years old and very sweet. She loves neck scratches and being held. Blanche would make a great lap cat! If you are a senior and interested ask us about our senior for senior discount! Let’s find her furever home!

Won’t you help us stock the Pet Food Pantry? Just drop off food at WHHS.

Rose

She is a very sweet girl but she is also very shy. However, she does loves her neck scratches. Rose is an indoor cat and would make a great addition to any family! Help us find this lovely girl her furever home!

Immunize, spay/neuter, shelter from the cold, and LOVE your pets!

Boost your Mental Health According to the National Institute Of Mental Health, seasonal affective disorder is a type of depression that comes and goes with the seasons. Starting in the late fall and early winter and going away during the spring and summer. For most, mental health can be even tougher during the winter months but there are ways you can help build your confidence and beat the blues.

Run in the cold

Your motivation and drive to workout drop with the temperature during the winter and fall months. Running during the winter can help boost your confidence and help you realize you are much stronger than you think you are. Keeping up with a normal schedule can help you fight off the winter blues. Most people stop and hibernate during the winter months which can create some symptoms of depression. Keep yourself moving with workouts, setting goals and challenges for yourself.

Find an inspiring quote Or a song

Words can be powerful and very motivating if you find the right words to motivate you. Find an inspiring quote or mantra that you can repeat to yourself

when days or workouts get difficult. Find a song to empower you through the tough days. Create various playlist for yourself during different situations. For example, create a playlist of songs that give you energy for your workout or songs that relax you and help you focus on reading.

Create goals

Creating goals for yourself to accomplish can help build morale and confidence in yourself when you are at your low points. If you don’t workout often start out with simple goals such as running half a mile or wake up every morning at 8 a.M. Your goals can even be something as simple as portioning your food better, losing five pounds or doing 10 push-ups every morning. Use your goals to slowly build your confidence and mental toughness.

Spring skin care Warmer weather means more sun, and that means you will have to take extra care of your skin. This section will go into teaching you how to take better care of your skin during the spring and summer months.

Exfoliate

Cold weather can really do a number on your skin and dry it out. Use a gentle exfoliating scrub to get rid of the dry, dead winter skin. You should exfoliate your face as well. Local pharmacies and grocery stores will sell body and face exfoliants for you to use. Remember, you will need to buy separate exfoliant for your body and face. You’ll want to use a more gentle exfoliant for your face than you would use for your body. You can also find face masks that will help get all the dead skin off your face without having to use a scrub that could cause tiny skin tears.

Don’t make excuses

Winter and fall depression can get to you at times and even motivate you to make excuses to keep you from working out. Discipline yourself and maintain that discipline. The best way to maintain your discipline is to just get up and do it. Create your goals, find your inspiration and stop making excuses for yourself.

Sunscreen is self care

The sun’s warm rays can be very harmful to your skin. As the temperature begins to rise, people want to be outside and enjoying the sun. You should always be careful exposing your skin to sun without sunscreen. It’s crucial to apply a good sunscreen during the spring and summer months. Apply sunscreen with at least a good spf 50 to both your face and your body.

Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize

Cold weather dries your skin out and your skin may have soaked up the heaviest of moisturizers you may have. During spring and summer, you’ll want to switch it up to a light moisturizer that won’t leave your skin feeling greasy. Find one that makes your skin feel hydrated and healthy. Find a hyaluronic acid- or water-based formula. Your skin seems to hold more water during the summer and spring months, so you won’t need as much moisturizing protection as you would during cold months.

Eat more fruits and vegetables

Applying sunscreen and moisturizer are great ways to liven your skin up during the warmer weather, but there are also dietary things you can do to help your skin. Eating nutrient rich food packed with vitamins and minerals such as fruits and vegetables also work wonders for your skin. Fruits and vegetables such as blackberries, guavas, kiwi fruits, cucumbers, oranges and strawberries are just a few examples of the kinds of fruits and vegetables to aid in skin care. Drinking a lot of water hydrates your body and your skin as well.

Dental hygiene is about more than just your teeth Individuals tend to learn about dental hygiene at an early age. On the recommendation of their children’s pediatricians, parents may begin brushing their youngsters’ teeth the moment the first tooth breaks through the gums. While proper dental hygiene is vital to oral health, it also can have a profound effect on the rest of the body. According to the Mayo Clinic, poor oral health might contribute to various diseases and conditions. Periodontitis is a severe yet preventable gum infection that can lead to tooth loss if left untreated. But the threat of periodontitis doesn’t end in the mouth. The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) notes there’s a connection between periodontitis and several other diseases. While bacteria was long suspected to be the link between periodontitis and other diseases in the body, the AAP notes that recent research points to inflammation as the culprit that connects periodontitis with diseases such as diabetes and heart disease.

Diabetes

The AAP notes that people with diabetes are at increased risk for periodontal disease, speculating that diabetes patients’ risk is higher because people with diabetes are more vulnerable to infections than those without diabetes. While that suggests periodontal disease is a byproduct of diabetes, the AAP notes that research points to the relationship

being a two-way street. Periodontal disease may make it more difficult for people with diabetes to control their blood sugar, making dental hygiene an especially vital component of routine healthcare for people with diabetes.

Heart disease

The AAP notes that research indicates periodontal disease increases a person’s risk for heart disease, with the inflammation caused by the former leading to the latter. People with existing heart conditions also may find that periodontal disease exacerbates those conditions. The Mayo Clinic notes that the link between heart disease and periodontal disease is not fully understood, but enough studies have been conducted for scientists to support the notion that the two are connected.

the elderly and smokers, should discuss their risk with their dental professionals. Dental hygiene can do more for individuals than produce a mouthful of pearly white teeth. In fact, people who prioritize dental hygiene may lower their risks for various diseases.

Can periodontal disease be prevented?

Periodontal disease is preventable. A daily dental hygiene regimen that includes brushing after meals, flossing at least once per day and swishing with mouthwash are some simple, healthy habits that can prevent periodontal disease. In addition, the AAP recommends that people at increased risk for periodontal disease, including

Basic Heart Health Tips

As you get older your risk for heart disease increases. You need to take big steps to actively monitor your health and change your lifestyle to a healthier one. Health.gov shares basic heart health tips to help you and your loved ones lower your risk for heart disease.

fast walking, dancing and biking. Begin by working out for at least 10-20 minutes a day. Increase the time as you adjust your schedule and your body to physical activity.

Eat healthy

Changing your diet can be one of the most difficult ways to lower your risk of heart disease — difficult because you may be accustomed to eating certain foods and certain spices on your foods for years. As you get older these foods can be a danger to your life paired with stress and sleep habits. Start by eating the right foods. A hearthealthy diet is low in saturated and trans fats, added sugars and sodium. Hearthealthy foods are high in fiber, such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables. You can find all these types of foods at your local grocery stores.

Get active

Becoming more active can also help to lower your risk for heart disease. You don’t have to become a professional weight lifter to create a healthier lifestyle. Health.gov says adults need at least two and a half hours of moderate aerobic activity each week. This can include

Encourage healthy habits

Take a look at your life and monitor what unhealthy habits may cause heart problems in the future. Break away from habits such as smoking, alcohol or stress. Quitting smoking helps lower your risk of heart disease and heart attack. Secondhand smoking can be just as harmful to you as well. Ask guests to smoke outside and try to avoid being around people that will smoke without considering your health. Drink alcohol in moderation and manage stress properly. Stress is one of the leading causes of heart disease, depression and high blood pressure. Practicing deep breathing techniques and meditation are good ways to manage your stress and relax yourself.

How to stay fit when social distancing

Healthy spring diet The change of weather should bring out a change in yourself. Create goals and set yourself up for success with modest changes to your lifestyle. Here are some tips to get you started.

Little changes matter

Making the switch to a healthy diet doesn’t have to be immediate, though. Start with a gradual, modest change to your diet. Small changes, such as drinking more water than sugary drinks each day or putting less sugar in your morning coffee. As time goes on, you can slowly and gradually add more goals and changes to your routine. Create goals for success and don’t set your self up for failure.

Set yourself up for success

Starting a diet doesn’t have to be complicated and life-altering. You can begin creating little changes that will help you ease into a healthy eating lifestyle. Begin by focusing on one goal at a time and grow from there. You can begin by doing something as simple as paying more attention to the labels on the foods you buy. Be aware of what’s in your food, as manufacturers sometimes hide

large amounts of sugars or unhealthy fats in packaged foods. Another way to set yourself up for success is to focus on how you feel after you eat something. This will help you create good habits for yourself and know what your body responds well to.

More health tips

One of the reasons most people fail a diet is because they try and quit foods they’ve eaten all their lives. This does the opposite of what you might think it would. Rather than help you, it hinders you from committing to your diet. Don’t think of any certain foods as off limits, but try and lower the portion you eat them. A diet doesn’t mean you have to quit all of your favorite foods. You can still eat your favorite foods, but now you will eat them in moderation. Instead of having a burger from your favorite place Monday through Friday, you can moderate it to only Tuesdays and Thursdays. Many people beginning a diet choose to eat healthy foods Monday through Friday and having their cheat days on the weekend. Dieting doesn’t have to be grueling and torture. Do what works best for you and your life.

Many people consider their gyms much more than a place to exercise. A gym can be a great place to socialize while trying to stay healthy. Having friends or fellow fitness enthusiasts around also can provide the motivation many people need to stay the course and achieve their fitness goals. The International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) says more than 70 million consumers visited health clubs in 2017. That marked a record high since IHRSA began tracking data in 1987. Fitness memberships also are popular in Canada. GoodLife, the largest fitness club in Canada, has 400 different locations and more than 1.5 million members. Fitness centers were among the many non-essential businesses forced to shutter as a result of COVID-19, forcing fitness enthusiasts to find new ways to stay mentally and physically fit. Many creative ideas have surfaced. • Online classes: An internet connection is all that’s necessary to find a number of workouts that can be streamed from the comfort of home. The streaming website YouTube can be a gold mine for free workouts. Some cable service providers also may have On Demand fitness channels or rentals that can mirror some of the classes taken at the gym. • Social apps: Gym-goers can inquire whether their gyms are offering alternative programs. For example, Jersey Strong, a fitness chain in New Jersey, began live-

streaming many of its popular group fitness classes via a special Facebook page. Class instructors guide classes from their own homes or from empty gyms. Other gyms may provide links to subscriber-based gym training workouts free of charge. • The great outdoors: Even though some parks, beaches and trails have been closed, workouts can take place in and around the neighborhood. Jogging or walking can be excellent cardiovascular exercises, as can taking a bicycle ride for a few miles down neighborhood streets. People who live in rural areas can run through forested land or even farmland. Pushups, sit-ups, planks, and other body weight exercises can be done right in the backyard. Before making a decision about whether or not to be active outside, be sure to check the latest guidance from your local health department and community or state leaders. • Remote sports: Videos of city dwellers playing tennis across roof tops for muchneeded air and exercise have emerged in recent weeks. Similar benefits can be achieved with a game of catch, volleyball or racquet sports over fences with neighbors, provided limits on participants are placed and social distancing is maintained. Staying fit during COVID-19 restrictions takes some ingenuity, but it’s certainly possible to maintain your overall health. In fact, some people have found they now have more time to exercise than they did before.

HELP WANTED TO ‘YOU’RE HIRED’

C&B 2

NORTHERN HILLS IS A JOB SEEKER’S MARKET BY JACI CONRAD PEARSON BLACK HILLS PIONEER NORTHERN HILLS — With nearly 900 jobs available in a tri-county area – and those are only the ones listed with the Department of Labor — the Northern Hills is a job seeker’s paradise, with many positions needing to be filled in anticipation of a strong summer visitor season. And employers crossing their fingers and hoping for the best, as the workforce pool is very limited. “I am hearing from and talking with businesses across all industries in our area that they are having difficulty finding employees at this time,” said South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation Manager Jonathan Englund. “The total number of job openings currently listed with us in the counties of Lawrence, Meade, and Butte is 894. The unemployment rate in those respective counties is 3.0%, 3.3%, and 3.6%.” Englund said Department of Labor and Regulation officials are thinking creatively on how to find and engage untapped labor pools to fill these immediate positions.

“The South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation, or Job Service, does provide training opportunities for qualifying individuals that also benefits employers,” Englund said. Training opportunities include: on-thejob training, work experiences, registered apprenticeships, tuition assistance for approved programs, and job shadows, among many other customized needs. “We encourage both job seekers and employers to contact us to see how we could possibly assist them to fill the current job market needs,” Englund said. South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation Manager Jonathan Englund offered a few strategies for submitting successful job applications. “Be prepared, be honest, and be optimistic,” he said. “Complete all requirements that the employer is asking for. This means that if they want a resume and/or an online application, then don’t show up to their place of business with a general application. Some employers use this as a screening method to see if an applicant will follow directions.”

PIONEER PHOTO BY JACI CONRAD PEARSON

Regarding resumes, Englund’s advice is to tailor every resume to the job being applied for. “Take key words and phrases from the job description and use it in your resume. It shows that you actually read the description and gives you the opportunity that you have experience doing that skill,” Englund said. Finally, when preparing for the interview, research the company, and have a couple questions prepared for the interviewer. “Ask about the work culture, and training methods. It shows that you are interested in the environment,” Englund said. “Stay away from asking about pay and benefits. We can conduct mock interviews at our office if you’re feeling nervous about going to a real one.” The South Dakota Department of Labor/ Job Service in Spearfish is available, by appointment, at 642-6900. “In addition, if employers are receiving applications, but individuals either decline a job offer or don’t show for a scheduled interview, the employer should contact Reemployment Assistance — formerly Unemployment Insurance — to report that to RAFraud@state.sd.us.” Amber Johnson, human resources manager, and Bob Morcom, business development manager of AinsworthBenning Construction, said they have numerous openings and need 12 employees to be fully staffed up, with field workers being the number one need right now. “For example, construction worker,

concrete finisher, carpenter, building superintendent, project manager,” said Johnson. “We are doing our best to incentivize our employees with referral bonuses and advertising for sign on bonus for specific positions but continue with hiring challenges.” Johnson said part of the challenge in construction hiring is people wanting to do this type of work. “Couple that with the generous stimulus checks and extra money on unemployment, and you have a perfect storm for people not wanting to enter the market,” she said. “It seems as though every business you pass has a ‘help wanted’ sign in the window and the potential employees are being sought after by multiple employers at any given time.” Deadwood Mountain Grand General (DMG) Manager Susan Kightlinger said she needs 200 employees to be fully staffed for summer and is still looking for help in the casino, hotel, and restaurant. “We have approximately 40 positions open in all departments,” Kightlinger said, adding that she and her staff are experiencing challenges in the hiring of those positions. “Very difficult,” Kightlinger said. “Unemployment benefits could be a contributing factor, as well as a shortage of housing in our immediate area.” And the number one area DMG needs help in? CUSTOMIZE

YOUR

RESUME

When applying for jobs, it’s becoming increasingly important to stand out in a crowd. Many companies use software to find qualified candidates; it’s likely your resume won’t even be reviewed by an actual human. And even if it does get a set of human eyes, a recent study by employment experts The Ladders shows hiring managers only spend about six seconds reviewing a resume before making a decision. Customizing your application to the specifications of a hiring advertisement can give you an advantage. Here are a few strategies to get a call back. UNDERSTAND THE JOB DESCRIPTION Even a degree and work experience in a particular field may not be enough to entice a hiring manager. It’s crucial to analyze each job description you are applying for and fine-tune your resume to its specifications. Within a post, you should analyze the responsibilities and requirements of the job. Look for key words and phrases when considering how to highlight your employment achievements.

FINDING THE RIGHT KEYWORDS Print out physical copies of job postings. Highlight the key terms you see frequently. When creating your resume, it’s important to phrase qualifications similarly to how an employer lists them on their advertisement. According to a study by Jobscan, more than 98% of Fortune 500 companies use an applicant tracking system to sort through candidates. This system picks the most qualified applications based on qualifications and keywords. CONSIDER EXPERIENCES While work experience and education play a major role in meeting qualifications, don’t forget the extracurricular activities. For instance, if it applies to the job, consider including any volunteer roles or charitable positions you have held.

TEENAGER

C&B

As a teenager, finding a part-time job is a significant 4 milestone in developing independence and responsibility. Unfortunately, without prior experience, it can be challenging to be noticed by hiring managers. your abilities to lead and work as a team. Here are some ideas. • Showcase experiences that express your discipline, commitment and willingness to work hard. Instances can include volunteering for charitable causes or assisting the faculty at school with tasks. • Document activities you pursue either in the classroom or as a hobby. Involvement with school clubs, sports or music lessons can help display your dedication to success. • Highlight any leadership positions you’ve participated in within the school organization or around your community. It’s also helpful to list a few personal references who will express their admiration for your perseverance and drive to find employment.

With an understanding of how the employment process operates, you can learn to navigate the hiring journey through each step. Here are some tips to get started.

DRAFT A RÉSUMÉ

When searching for an entry-level position, it’s likely that you won’t be

required to turn in a résumé. Still, bringing along a document to turn in with an application shows a hiring manager that you are responsible and serious about the position. But what do you put on your form without any previous work experience? The answer is anything that shows off

The Weekly Prospector

An easy way to find companies that are hiring is by asking your friends who are already employed. They may be able to talk to their supervisor about bringing you in for an interview or have another acquaintance who knows of an available position. Don’t limit your lead search to other teenagers. You should also consider asking teachers, neighbors, family contacts and school counselors if they are

aware of an opportunity. The more doors you knock on, the more results you can expect.

PRACTICE FOR AN INTERVIEW

Landing an interview without prior work experience is already an incredible accomplishment. The meeting is your time to shine and impress a hiring manager, so it’s crucial to practice public speaking techniques. Ask a parent or friend to help you research frequently asked questions in interviews and prepare quick and confident answers. During the appointment, maintain eye contact, offer a firm handshake and ensure clear communication to show your eagerness.

FOLLOWING UP

After an interview, a vital aspect of the process is following up. If you aren’t contacted in a week, make an effort to call the manager or visit the business to check on your application. Showing your enthusiasm and interest in the position can often lead to rewards. However, if the interviewer reveals that they won’t pursue you for the job, it’s essential to contain your disappointment and thank them for the opportunity. Ask if they are willing to share why they made the decision so you can adjust your jobseeking strategy in the future.

GET TING OVER

NEW JOB

NERVOUSNESS

Ease your anxiety by understanding that you landed the gig because you impressed the hiring manager with your interview performance and qualifications. Rather than express nervousness, go into a new opportunity with enthusiasm and a commitment to thrive, even if you make a few mistakes along the way. Your best chance to understand the unknown is through asking questions during the interview. When you’re a vocal participant in the meeting, it shows the hiring manager that you are interested in becoming an active advocate to the company. Keep your questions professional but try to find out the formality of the office, how the workplace is different from others in the industry and ask if a facility tour is available. Having a firm grasp on the occupation that you may potentially enter can help with the jitters once you’re hired. Here are some tips to make the process more comfortable once you’re on the job.

MINGLE WITH YOUR PEERS

Fitting in with a new cast of co-workers can be the most nerve-wracking aspect of beginning a new occupation. It’s likely that employees already have their tight-knit friends and an understanding

Starting a new job is an exciting process but can become stressful as you learn about the position and your co-workers.

of the company culture. Do your best to show interest in cultivating a professional relationship or finding a mentor. After you establish a familiarity with your peers, try to build the connection outside of the office. Ask if they are willing to sit down for lunch and dinner where you can ask questions about the company and learn more about one another.

SHOW YOUR WILLINGNESS TO LEARN

When beginning a new position, it’s essential to pay attention to the operation’s inner workings. Even if you feel that you’re qualified in terms of experience and education, remember that each office is different. Show humbleness during your training and ask questions about things you don’t understand. When you feel like something can be accomplished more efficiently, try to do it according to the policy before attempting to enforce new methods at first. Of course, as you become more comfortable with the role and your managers, making suggestions is an efficient way to show your passion. You should also be willing to accept constructive criticism and avoid overreacting when you make minor mistakes. Understand that as you become

accustomed to a new workplace, you’re on a learning curve while peers and supervisors express their expectations.

ENJOY YOURSELF

Rather than worrying about starting a new position, enter the experience with a positive mindset. SUMMER

INTERNSHIP Finding the right internship isn’t easy. There are many factors that you should consider. The right internship will align with your career goals. The right internship won’t drain your finances to the point of financial ruin. The right internship for you won’t necessarily be the right internship for someone else. DO YOU WANT AN INTERNSHIP? Maybe what you’re really after is a job. Are you looking for something that pays? Or a position that you can grow with? These things can be found in an internship — but are not guarantees. Research both options before choosing an internship. UNDERSTAND THE COMMITMENT How much of your time will each internship you are considering require of you? If it is full-time and unpaid, you will need a strict financial plan to follow during your internship. Will it require weekend hours or nights? Will it require travel? Understand your commitment upfront and there will be no surprises.

JOIN OUR

UNDERSTAND THE RETURN Are you looking at paid and unpaid internships? Even if you are getting paid through your internship, there are many other benefits you should consider. Ask yourself what this particular internship will do for your career. Are you able to network effectively? If you prove yourself, is there potential for the internship to lead to a full-time position? UNDERSTAND THE ENVIRONMENT While it might seem like small potatoes, the environment in which we work has a huge impact on your productivity and overall happiness. If you like to be around people, the team spirit and collaborative nature of a company should be very important to you. In other words, don’t sign up for an internship that has you sitting at a desk all by yourself, day in and day out. You will tire of the work very quickly and become uninspired by the company — even if it is doing great things in which you believe.

JOB SEEKER’S MARKET “Food and beverage services,” Kightlinger said. Celebrity Hotel and Casino Managing Partner Ken Gienger said, like the rest of Deadwood, his property is having a hard time finding people to hire its full staff of 24 employees for the summer. “In the hotel/casino we could use two full-time and two part-time. Housekeepers, we could use three full-time and three parttime and one laundry person,” Gienger said. “Every casino needs key license people to meet the gaming requirements and we also are in need of support license personnel. Housekeepers have been a challenge because of the amount of hotel rooms we currently have and the amount of new rooms that will be open this summer.” Because in many cases, gaming personnel must hold certain credentials, an even bigger set of challenges exists to fill those types of positions. “On the gaming side, getting a person a key license is taking a little more time than normal because of the backlog the gaming commission has,” Gienger said. “We don’t not have enough workers in Deadwood to handle what we all need on the gaming side. We have found that a lot of workers who were here before COVID have decided to either fully retire or just not come back into the gaming business. With the government still giving out stimulus checks and extra amounts for unemployment it makes it hard for some people to want to come back to work.” Gienger said that the housing situation in Deadwood and Lead has been tough and only got tougher with more employees working at the Sanford Lab. “This has created an increase in rental rates,” Gienger said. “The effects of COVID and the protests in the larger cities has seen a lot of house sales going to out of state people. Combine that with the over 40% increase in cost to build a house. It is getting more and more expensive for our local workers to buy a house.” Gienger said one go-to source to formerly fill jobs is also drying up. “In the past, we were able to employ high school students for the summer or weekends but the demand for those types of workers is more than the supply,” he said. “We are finding that our foreign workers Deadwood relies on in the summer are not

as plentiful as in the past. Either the COVID restraints their countries have instituted or them not able to get a visa in a timely matter has reduced the amount of foreign workers coming to Deadwood. Plus we have been told by the people we work with to bring in these workers that the bigger contracts will be filled first and if you had workers assigned to you they are being reassigned to the bigger contract.” So how can businesses hold it together and get through the season? “I think all businesses in Deadwood are under the same circumstances, so we all are managing our businesses on the amount of people we have or think we will have,” Gienger said. “Hotel managers are looking at the amount of housekeepers they have and are making adjustments to the amount of rooms they make available to sell. Restaurants are adjusting their hours depending on how many employees they have available. And solid employees are working more hours which means more overtime.” For example, if the Celebrity gets a housekeeper, then a manager can work more hours on the gaming floor. If a gaming floor person is hired, a manager can work more hours helping housekeeping. “Again, it all comes done to looking who you have working for you and making adjustments,” Gienger said. Louie Lalonde, owner of the Deadwood Social Club and Saloon No. 10, said she is still in need of 16 full-time and two parttime workers in the bar, restaurant, and cleaning departments. “We’ve advertised through social media and the newspaper,” Lalonde said. “I wish I knew all the reasons why people are not interested in working. Some, I’m sure, are housing issues, if they are from out of town.”

INTERVIEW

MISTAKES AVOID

Tuesday, May 11, 2021, Page 27A

New career paths and opportunities for advancement begin with the same step: the interview. Successful interviews are achieved with a mixture of confidence, preparation and proper grooming.

THAT YOU SHOULD

You’ve most likely read many tips and given tips on great interview skills. But most of these tips list all the things you should do and focus more on preparing for your interview. What about what you should avoid doing during an interview?

SHOWING UP LATE

This one should be obvious, but the larger point is that no one plans to show up late to an interview. Things happen. There is traffic. There is unforeseen weather. There are canceled babysitters and medical emergencies. Be sure to build in a buffer. Plan to leave for your interview much earlier than you need to. If nothing stalls your progress, you can always kill time in the area in local shops or find a coffee shop where you can review your notes or read up on the company a little more.

SELLING YOURSELF SHORT

Be confident in your skills and experience. For example, don’t be

embarrassed of a position you held that didn’t end as planned. You still learned valuable lessons and skills from that experience. Tap into them and demonstrate how each experience has helped you grow. It also is important to know your own story. Pay attention to what you are saying so you can avoid inadvertently contradicting yourself later. If there are gaps in your experience, be prepared to talk about them.

REVEALING INSECURITIES

Don’t talk about how nervous you are or how intimidated you might be by programming or software you will have to use. Revealing your insecurities makes you look unsure.

Saying “like” or “um” too much also makes you seem unsure of yourself. You want to exude confidence in yourself, your skills and your ability to do the job.

HAVING ZERO QUESTIONS

You should ask at least one question of your interviewer. Even if you prepare a few questions, there is the chance

that those will be answered through the process of the interview. If this happens, be ready to think on your feet. Odds are there was some point of the interview you can build off of to ask an intelligent question. For example, “How do you feel leadership is fostered within the company?”
