Pets of the Week Tippy

Tippy came in with 3 siblings, they are Malamute/Husky/Boxer mixes, born on Jan. 2, 2015. None have been fixed yet, but they were given their first set of shots: distemper and Bordetella. They are a little scared, but super sweet puppies and super cute. Tippy is female.

Gabby

Gabby is a purebred Mountain Cur. She has some hunting experience (mountain lion), but needs obedience training. She is three years old and is used to living outside in everything but extreme cold.

Lizzy

Lizzy is a very sweet, older cat.

She is about 11 years old, spayed and vaccinated. She is still quite active and is a fairly small cat.

Star

Star is about 6 years old. He has the most beautiful blue eyes.

He is a unique looking cat who loves to be loved. He’s part Siamese, but he’s not talkative.

He’s just LOVELY.

HEALTHY VISION MONTH How to protect your vision over the long haul

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, eye diseases related to aging are the primary cause of vision impairment in the United States.

Many people consider vision loss a natural side effect of aging, but there are ways men and women can protect their vision and reduce their risk of vision loss as they age.

• Quit smoking. According to the National Eye Institute, smoking doubles a person’s risk for age-related macular degeneration, or AMD. AMD is a leading cause of vision loss in men and women over the age of 50. It causes damage to the macula, which is the part of the eye needed for sharp, central vision. If the macula is damaged, vision may be blurry, distorted or dark.

• Protect eyes from ultraviolet light.

The American Optometric Association notes that UV-A and UV-B radiation can have adverse effects on a person’s vision.

A short-term effect of excessive exposure to UV radiation is photokeratitis, a painful condition that can lead to red eyes, extreme sensitivity to light and excessive tearing.

Long-term effects of such exposure include a higher risk of developing cataracts and damage to the retina, which is the part of the eye used for seeing. When spending time outdoors, always wear sunglasses that provide protection against UV-A and UV-B rays.

• Maintain a healthy blood pressure. High blood pressure, often referred to as HBP or hypertension, can contribute to vision loss as a person ages. The American Heart Association notes that HBP can strain blood vessels in the eyes, causing them to narrow or bleed. HBP also can cause the optic nerve to swell, compromising a person’s vision as a result.

Eye damage that results from HBP is cumulative, which means the longer it goes untreated, the more likely the damage to the eye will be permanent. Men and women can maintain a healthy blood pressure by eating right, exercising regularly and sustaining a healthy weight.

• Take breaks from work.

Computer vision syndrome, or CVS, is a legitimate condition that can develop when a person spends ample time staring at a computer screen.

People experiencing ocular migraines may experience scintillations, or bright flashing lights or flickering.

Wavy lines surrounding an enlarging blind spot (scotoma) also can occur.

Blind spots may start small but quickly grow bigger and move across one’s field of vision.

Sometimes an ocular migraine is accompanied by a migraine headache and certain symptoms, such as light sensitivity and nausea, that are associated with migraine headaches. The National Institutes of Health notes that, if an ocular migraine is accompanied by a headache, the pain from the migraine is often located on the same side of the head as the eye that is experiencing the ocular migraine.

Migraines in general are not well understood, and the same can be said

for ocular migraines. The causes ocular migraines is not exactly known, but it is thought to be related to constricted blood vessels in the eye, possibly in the retina.

The Mayo Clinic says that while visual sensations associated with ocular migraines can induce anxiety and interfere with certain activities, the condition usually is not considered serious and can ease up within 20 to 30 minutes. Some people do not even realize their symptoms may be migrainerelated because of the lack of associated headache.

Several more serious conditions can cause similar symptoms to the relatively benign ocular migraine. Men and women who frequently experience visual disturbances should consult with an expert who can rule out other ailments. Everything from an embolism to tumors of the eye to optic neuropathy may produce symptoms similar to ocular migraines.

If an ocular migraine is a one-time occurrence, sufferers need not worry.

However, any vision problems should be investigated fully to determine if any underlying conditions are present and to safeguard against any long-term vision loss.

Next Decade: A Growth Explosion A

s popular as craft beer has seemingly become over the past 10 years or so, research predicts even more growth in the industry.

Mintel’s latest research on the U.S. craft beer market shows that sales more than doubled between 2007 and 2012 – increasing from $5.7 billion to $12 billion in that five-year span.

The group, a 40-year-old global supplier of consumer, product and media intelligence, forecasts that the craft beer industry will enjoy robust growth through 2017. The report estimates $18 billion in sales that year, which would show triple growth for the craft beer industry in a 10-year period.

A GROWING CATEGORY

Mintel notes that while the craft beer category remains a small segment of the $78 billion U.S. beer industry, the sector has actually helped stabilize the overall beer economy.

The industry has experienced volume declines in the domestic and imported beer categories since 2008.

OTHER FINDINGS

Mintel’s research also uncovered some staggering numbers that can help brewers adjust their marketing

strategies for optimal revenue growth.

Among the statistics: • Twenty-four percent of consumers who drink beer indicated that in 2012 they drank more craft beer sold at stores compared to 2011.

• About 22 percent reported consuming more craft beer in bars or restaurants.

• Craft beer resonates the most in the 25- to 35-year-old consumer.

• Forty-three percent of both millennials and Generation X said that craft beer tastes better than domestic beer, compared to 32 percent of baby boomers.

• Fifty percent of all craft beer drinkers expressed interest in locally made beer, and 25 percent are interested in purchasing craft beer where it was brewed.

• About 39 percent said they bought a craft beer because it had a personality to which they can relate.

• Only 17 percent of millennials and 18 percent of Generation X said that craft beer is a better value.

• About 56 percent of consumers of all ages believed that domestic beer is better value compared to craft beer.

Ordering Wine On a Date You picked the perfect restaurant, the appetizer is ordered and the only thing left is to select the perfect bottle of wine.

To splurge or not to splurge? That is the question when it comes to finding an appropriate wine to impress your date.

Research is Key Most restaurants post their wine selections online, so a bit of due diligence will equip you with the knowledge of which wine works with which food. You don’t have to become an expert to feel prepared – just get to know the basics.

Which wines are considered light and can complement a nice chicken or pork dish? Which ones are darker and meant to be sipped before and after a meal?

Knowing the wine’s producer, the grape variety and the region in which the wines you’re interested in are produces also can help you decide.

Also figure out your price-point and see if you’ll be able to find a bottle of

wine in that range. Ordering a full bottle can help score you points in the spending category.

Use the Restaurant Staff If you don’t have time to fully prepare yourself, don’t be afraid to use your lifeline – the restaurant staff. Many top-tier restaurants feature a wine specialist who is available to answer any and all wine-related questions you can think of. These sommeliers are the people who actually put together the wine list and know it like the back of their hands. This is who you want to track down.

If your restaurant doesn’t boast a wine expert, ask your server or manager for some details. The key is toeing the line between being a conversational customer and one who won’t stop asking questions. The latter will likely bore your date and make you seem indecisive. And if this is a first or second date, then that is not the image you want to portray.
