PETS WEEK OF THE
Conquer
This 1 and a half year old big boy is full of energy and love. He is very strong so his owners will need to be able to handle him. He loves to run so a big backyard is necessary. Conquer does not like other animals so he will need to be the only animal in the home.
DOG
He is the goodest boy that is 5 years old and is a mixed breed with Pitbull in him. He has been in a house with an older dog and kids. He aims to please and knows a few commands, is house trained and will do anything for a treat! DOG would make a great family dog.
Daisy
This sweet girl is 3 years old and is such a lover. She loves all attention and will cuddle with you always! She is okay with other cats but we are not sure about dogs. Daisy would make a great companion or family cat!
Tonks
This sweet girl is 10 months old. She can be quite iffy around other animals so she would need to be in a home where it is just her. She is very loving and sweet towards all humans. Tonks is fixed, up to date on shots, FIV tested, and microchipped.
Make a difference for life. Adopt a shelter pet today! All Pets are spayed or neutered before they leave the shelter. Lost pets and strays fill the shelter, can you help with time or donations? Some have to choose between food for family or food for pets. To discourage animal abandonment, a Pet Food Pantry is available at the shelter for those who need it. Won’t you help us stock the Pet Food Pantry? Just drop off food at WHHS. Immunize, spay/neuter, shelter from the cold, and LOVE your pets!

JULY 4TH Weekend Guide
Safety first when handling fireworks
Whether it’s the Fourth of July or town gatherings along a local waterfront, fireworks displays are a big part of many people’s summers. Unfortunately, the potential for accidents and injuries is high when fireworks are involved, particularly when displays aren’t left to the professionals. The Consumer Product Safety Commission notes that, on average, 280 people per day visit emergency rooms with fireworks-related injuries in the month around the July 4th holiday. More
than 53 percent of fireworks-related injuries in 2017 were burns. Fireworks are always best left to the professionals, and many communities have criminalized the use of fireworks by amateurs. But many people still light fireworks, and those that do should follow these safety precautions. • Never let kids handle fireworks. Fireworks, even sparklers, should never be given to children. The National SAFE KIDS campaign notes that sparklers burn at 2,000 F, which is hot enough to cause third-degree burns. So while they might seem like harmless symbols of summer, sparklers pose a significant threat to youngsters. • Follow directions. Fireworks come with detailed directions for a reason, and that’s to keep users safe. Strictly adhere to these directions and go over them with anyone who intends to light fireworks. • Never use fireworks indoors. Fireworks are for outdoor use only. If it rains, do not try to light fireworks indoors and then throw them outside before they go off.
• Make sure spectators keep a safe distance. Do not light fireworks until all spectators are out of range should something go awry. • Recognize that fireworks are not toys. They might be a marvel, but fireworks are not toys. As a result, they should never be aimed or thrown at another person, nor should they be lit or launched from a body

part. • Do not attempt to reignite malfunctioning fireworks. Attempting to reignite malfunctioning fireworks can lead to serious injury. • Light fireworks on smooth, flat surfaces. Make sure to direct them away from people, homes, dry leaves, and flammable materials.

JULY 4TH Weekend Guide
Festive facts for July 4th Each year on July 4, Americans celebrate the birth of their nation and independence from Great Britain. This day marks the anniversary of the presentation and acceptance of the Declaration of Independence, signed 242 years ago on July 4, 1776. The Declaration of Independence began as a letter to Britain’s King George to explain why the Continental Congress was interested in declaring independence from Great Britain. The writing of the declaration began on July 2 and the final wording was established on July 4. Independence Day is full of opportunities to celebrate and enjoy oneself. Parades, fireworks, parties, barbecues, and much more are part of the festivities. Another way to commemorate Independence Day is to educate oneself about the many historical and entertaining facts that surround the day. The following are some interesting details about the origins of Independence Day and the celebrations that surround it. • Although 56 people eventually signed the Declaration of Independence, only John Hancock

signed the document on July 4, 1776. The rest added their names later on. John Hancock’s signature is ornate and widely recognized. Putting your “John Hancock” on a document has become synonymous with the process of signing something. • The Declaration of Independence was adopted while the Continental Congress met in Philadelphia at the Pennsylvania Statehouse. That building is now known as Independence Hall. • The average age of the signers of the Declaration of Independence was 45. The youngest person to sign was Thomas Lynch, Jr., who was 27 when he signed the document. Benjamin Franklin, at age 70, was the oldest signee. • John Adams and Thomas Jefferson were the only signees who went on to serve as presidents. Coincidentally, Jefferson and Adams both died on July 4, 1826, within hours of each other. • Philadelphia is the birth place of much American history and is home to the Liberty Bell. original 13 American colonies. • The original 13 American colonies were located all along the eastern seaboard. They include Virgina, New York, New Hampshire, Massachusetts Bay, Maryland, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Delaware, North Carolina, South Carolina, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Georgia. • The stars on the original American flag were placed in a circle. This was so all of the colonies would be equally represented. • Independence was gained in 1776, and the first celebration took place in Philadelphia four days later. The White House held its first Independence Day festivities in 1801. • Benjamin Franklin proposed that the turkey be the national bird of the United States. However, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson overruled him, and the bald eagle became the national bird. • The only copy of the engrossed and signed Declaration of Independence is in the National Archives in Washington, D.C.

JULY 4TH Weekend Guide
Getting to know the Declaration of Independence On July 1, 1776, delegates from the original 13 colonies, making up the Second Continental Congress, met in Philadelphia to vote on Richard Henry Lee’s motion for independence. After some deliberation, ultimately 12 of the 13 delegates voted in favor. In recognition of those 12 delegates, here are 12 facts regarding the Declaration of Independence. 1. The drafted document was officially adopted on July 4, 1776, two days after freedom from Britain was approved. However, most delegates signed the document on August 2, 1776, while others signed on a later date. John Dickinson and Robert R. Livingston never signed the Declaration of Independence. 2. John Dunlap was the official printer of Congress at the time. He worked all night and into the morning of July 5 to produce the large, single-sided sheet, known as a broadside. About 200 copies of Dunlap’s broadside were made. 3. The University of Virginia owns two copies of a rare early printing of the Declaration. It is on display in the Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library. It is believed the copy once belonged to George Washington. 4. Benjamin Franklin, George Read, Roger Sherman, Robert Morris, George
Clymer, and James Wilson signed both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. 5. The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were hidden at Fort Knox during World War II, two weeks after Pearl Harbor was attacked. 6. Despite what the movie “National Treasure” will have one believe, the message on the back of the document is visible and reads “Original Declaration of Independence dated 4th July 1776.” 7. Richard Stockton, a lawyer from New
Jersey, was a signer of the Declaration who later recanted his support of the American revolution. He subsequently swore his allegiance to King George III after being captured by the British. 8. In 1989, an original Dunlap Broadside was found hidden behind a picture a Philadelphia man bought at a flea market for $4. It later sold for $8.1 million. Ultimately, 26 copies of the original prints have been found. 9. The United States celebrates Independence Day on July 4th, even
though independence was accepted on July 2nd. 10. Early on, not everyone in America was supportive of the Declaration of Independence. Partisan politics led to discord. Federalist John Adams was feuding with Republicans and Thomas Jefferson. The anniversary date of the signing was not widely celebrated until the Federalists were no longer involved in politics. 11. The one-year anniversary of Independence Day and the celebration of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence slipped the minds of Congress in 1777. When they remembered it was July 3rd, they planned a last-minute celebration on July 4th, and each year thereafter. 12. John Trumbull’s painting “Declaration of Independence,” which was made into a lithograph replica by Ralph Trembly, hangs in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol. It is a fictional depiction of the five-man drafting committee presenting their draft to Congress, and not the signing. The painting shows 42 of the 56 signees, since Trumbull couldn’t get likenesses of all involved. The men featured in the painting were never all in the room at the same time during the Declaration’s debate and signing.
Why is Independence Day celebrated on July 4th? The Continental Congress declared its independence from Great Britain on July 2, 1776. If that date raises an eyebrow, it should. Independence Day in the United States has long been celebrated on July 4th, which would seem to be two days late. But upon closer examination, it seems Americans are not really celebrating their independence
two days later than they should be. According to the National Constitution Center, the Continental Congress approved a resolution declaring its independence from Great Britain on July 2. However, a document still needed to be drafted to explain the decision to the general public. Such a document was already in the works, but it took

two days for the men of Congress to agree on a final version. The resulting document, known as the Declaration of Independence, was sent to John Dunlap, an Irish printer who served under George Washington during the American Revolutionary War, who subsequently printed roughly 200 broadsides. Still, the Declaration
of Independence was not read to the public until July 8, 1776, when Colonel John Nixon did so in Philadelphia on what is now known as Independence Square. It was nearly a month later, on August 2, 1776, when most members of the Continental Congress actually signed the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia.

Firework regulations in the Black Hills NORTHERN HILLS — Independence Day is just around the corner, and that means sunshine, barbecues, parades, and, of course, fireworks. Because ordinances relating to fireworks can get pretty muddled, the Black Hills Pioneer is listing when and where personal use fireworks can be discharged. South Dakota state law states that fireworks may be discharged from June 27 through July 5. County and city ordinances can vary across the state according to where they are located, such as those close to the Black Hills National Forest. The use and possession of fireworks, exploding targets, and luminaries with open flames are prohibited on lands administered by the BLM and other federal agencies. Open fire is not allowed within the Black Hills Fire Protection District, except in established metal fire rings or grills that are in designated sites within a developed campground, recreation area, or picnic ground. Campfires and burn piles are allowed on private land, as long
as they are permitted and fall within the requirements that can be found at: https://wildlandfire.sd.gov/. The sale of fireworks in South Dakota is legal from June 27 through July 5.
Belle Fourche Personal fireworks can be discharged on privately owned property within the city limits from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. July 2-4.
Belle Fourche Reservoir No fireworks are allowed at the Belle Fourche Reservoir, Rocky Point Recreation Area and Federal and state lands surrounding Orman Dam. The permanent, reservoir-wide restriction allows for more consistent law enforcement and greatly reduces the risk of fire at the reservoir.
Butte County Fireworks are allowed on private land from June 27 to July 5.

Fantastic facts about fireworks Cities and towns across the country commemorate special days with various festivities, particularly when warm weather beckons people outdoors. Fireworks long have been a popular way to cap off parades, concerts, sporting events, and national days of celebration. Entire communities come together to watch spectacular shows in which blazing pops of color light up the night sky. Smithsonian magazine reports that pyrotechnics displays have been astounding audiences all over the world for centuries. As early as 200 B.C. fireworks were developed in China to first scare off mountain men and later evil spirits. However, soon the Chinese incorporated “fire drug,” essentially saltpeter, sulfur and charcoal (a recipe for gunpowder), into their cultural celebrations. Early Chinese fireworks consisted of the gunpowder mixture stuffed in bamboo tubes. Fireworks have evolved since then, but by and large they’re still comprised of the same main parts: an oxidizer, fuel and chemical mixture to produce desired colors. Fireworks are a wonder to behold when they are part of professional displays, and their history can be interesting as well. • While the Chinese invented fireworks, Italians helped fine-tune them. Italians are credited with designing aerial shells and figuring out that certain metallic powders could create specific colors. • The largest consistent fireworks show in the United States is the Macy’s show in New York over the Hudson River on July 4th. More than three million people view the show, which includes more than 40,000 shells.
Black Hills Pioneer File Photo
• The Walt Disney Company is the largest consumer of fireworks in the world, according to Business Insider. It also is the second largest purchaser of explosive devices, behind only the U.S. Department of Defense. • High-energy metal compounds like copper chloride emit colors like violet and blue in fireworks. Low-energy compounds like strontium chloride produce orange and red. • The pattern fireworks will produce in the sky is determined by how stars are arranged inside of the shell. Stars are the cubes or
spheres that contain the chemicals needed for the firework reaction. • Mental Floss notes that “daytime fireworks” are made up of colored smoke and can be seen during the day. • Individuals who are employed in the manufacture of fireworks must wear cotton clothing, including undergarments. Synthetic clothing can create sparks capable of detonating fireworks, according to Alamo Fireworks. • Various fireworks shapes have their own names. They may be called
willows, palms, crossettes, horsetails, rings, cakes, and more. • New Castle, PA is known as the “Fireworks Capital of America.” This is due to the fact that Zambelli Fireworks Internationale and Pyrotecnico both got their start there in the mid-nineteenth century. • Scientists are currently working to create more eco-friendly fireworks. Fireworks will soon be booming in towns and cities all over, and their history is as interesting as their displays are awe-inspiring.
As we celebrate our Nation’s freedom, we honor the courageous men and women dedicated to preserving it.

JULY 4TH Weekend Guide
Fourth of July party tips More than 332 million people live in the United States, according to the most recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau. There’s a good chance that, come July 4th, a considerable number of those individuals will be hosting or attending parties to celebrate American independence. This year those planning on a July 4th fête can consider these tips as they prepare to celebrate with family and friends. • Borrow a second grill. Those tasked with grilling often find themselves standing there for hours over hot flames. Cut down on time at the grill by adding an extra cooking surface. That’s easily achieved by having more than one grill going simultaneously. Cook fast-cooking items like hamburgers and hot dog on one grill, and reserve the other for sausages and chicken, which may need more time to reach safe levels of doneness. • Stop peeking. Resist any urge to check the food too often. Every time you flip, press or move the meats, you compromise flavor and could make the food dry
out. • Lure insects away. Bees are attracted to sweet smells, but wasps and hornets are drawn to meats. Put a saucer of very sweet soda and some chicken scraps in a far corner of your yard to attract yellow jackets and other stinging insects to that area, drawing their attention away from guests and their meals. • Give neighbors a heads-up. Parties and barbecues on July 4th are largely expected, but you can offer a courtesy to neighbors by informing them of your plans, including the start time and proposed ending time. If you are close with neighbors, consider inviting them to participate. • Skip the fireworks. Even if fireworks are permitted where you live, it’s best to avoid the potential safety hazards and leave fireworks displays to the professionals. Shooting off fireworks in neighborhoods causes debris to rain down on guests or land in pools, and it may even be ingested by pets or wildlife. Even spar-
klers can be dangerous, as they burn at 2,000 F. In fact, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says sparklers account for around 60 percent of injuries among children under five during summer festivities. • Create a patriotic playlist. Use your favorite music streaming service to curate
a music list that features America-specific songs, songs about summer and general party tunes. Be sure the music is in the background and does not overpower the conversation. July 4th plans are heating up. When hosting a party or barbecue, keep it simple and safe.

JULY 4TH Weekend Guide
Impress guests with homemade burgers this Fourth of July Backyard barbecues are a staple of summertime. In fact, many Fourth of July celebrations just wouldn’t feel right without hamburgers and hot dogs cooking over an open flame in the backyard. Burgers may not qualify as fancy fare, but they’re perfect for Independence Day celebrations. This year, party hosts can add a little
something extra to their barbecues by whipping up some homemade hamburgers. This recipe for “Mushroom and Swiss Burgers with Bacon and Aioli” from “The Essential Kamado Grill Cookbook” (Rockridge Press) by Will Budiaman is sure to make your Fourth of July festivities more flavorful.
MUSHROOM & SWISS BURGERS WITH BACON & AIOLI BURGER RECIPE SERVES: 4 INGREDIENTS: 8 bacon slices 8 ounces cremini mushrooms, sliced Kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper 2 pounds ground beef 4 Swiss cheese slices 4 kaiser rolls, split 1/2 cup aioli (see below) DIRECTIONS: 1. Prepare the grill for direct grilling at 500 F, then preheat a 10-inch cast iron skillet on the grate with the lid closed. 2. Put the bacon in the skillet. Close the lid and cook for 1 to 2 minutes or until browned and crispy around the edges. Transfer to a plate. 3. Add the mushrooms to the skillet.
AIOLI RECIPE MAKES: 1 1/4 cups INGREDIENTS: 1 large egg 1 cup vegetable oil 2 garlic cloves, peeled 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt DIRECTIONS: 1. Put the egg in the bowl of a small food processor. Blend until beaten. 2. With the machine running, slowly
Close the lid and cook, stirring once, for 7 to 9 minutes or until browned. Transfer to a plate. Season with salt and pepper. 4. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, season the beef with pepper and 4 teaspoons of salt. Using your hands, mix until just incorporated; form into four 1-inch-thick patties with a slight dimple in the center. 5. Put the burgers on the grate. Close the lid and cook, flipping halfway through, for 8 to 10 minutes total for medium, or until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the center registers 135 F. (If using store-bought ground beef, always cook it to 160 F, or well done.) In the last minute of cooking, top the patties with the cheese to melt and place the rolls cut-side down on the grate to toast. 6. Spread the aioli on the buns and assemble the burgers, dividing the bacon and mushrooms between them. Serve immediately. stream in the oil through the feed tube until emulsified (the mixture thickens). 3. Blend in the garlic and salt. 4. Transfer to an airtight container, refrigerate, and use within 5 days. Troubleshooting: Is your aioli just not coming together, staying thin and runny instead of thickening? You may be streaming in your oil too quickly. But don’t throw out the batch. Instead, pour it into a small cup or bowl, wash and dry the bowl and blade of the food processor, and start again with a fresh egg. Use the previous batch as your “oil.”
