Summertime FUN Rental RV adventures
Recreational vehicles allow us to road trip in style, but they can be a huge investment. That’s why rental options are flourishing. A growing trend
Some 65 million travelers are planning an RV vacation in 2022, according to one survey from the Go RVing trade group. Many of them will be renting instead of buying. The practice became trendy during the first year of the pandemic, as the Austin-based peer-to-peer rental site Outdoorsy saw a stunning 4,000 percent increase during 2020’s busiest months. RV and camper-van rentals are now expected to be a $356.2 million industry in 2022, as the segment continues its steady rise. Growth of more than three percent has been charted every year for the past five. Outdoorsy now has 48 million users; company officials says they have already passed 1 billion total transactions.
How to choose
Size, space, distance and your driving comfort level are all key factors in deciding which RV to rent. You’ll obviously need additional room if more friends and family are coming along, but the largest Class A models can present driving and parking challenges. These RVs range from 24 to 40 feet, and comfortably accommodate up
to seven people. Less experienced drivers might select a Class B version, which is about as wide as the average pickup truck and less than 25 feet long. They’re easier to maneuver and get better gas mileage, but you shouldn’t try to fit more than four people inside. Class C RVs are usually built on a truck chassis, with sleeping bunks located above the passenger cabin. They’re usually 30 feet or less, and can welcome up to six people.
Ready to rent?
Professional dealers will be easier to research. They’ll also have technicians on duty to help should anything go wrong. Renting from large companies like Cruise America includes package deals with roadside assistance and insurance, while RVshare also offers fifth wheels and travel trailers for rent. (RVshare makes one-way renting possible, too.) Be aware that some states require RV drivers to have a commercial driver’s license — in particular for Class A motorhomes — so check local laws along your travel route. Research RV camp sites before you go, since there is a very wide range of amenities and pricing.

Summertime FUN
Why you need a hammock or hanging chair Sunny days and warm weather beckon us to the great outdoors. A day spent in the pool or lounging around the patio is a great way to embrace the relaxing spirit of summer. But those who want to go the extra relaxing miles should consider adding a hammock or swinging chair to their backyard oasis. Hammocks and swinging chairs make great investments. Outdoor enthusiasts can take them on camping trips, and they’re equally at home right in the backyard. People on the fence about these symbols of relaxation can consider these benefits of hammocks or swinging chairs.
Use it indoors or outdoors
Create a retreat in any corner of your yard or home. A hanging chair can be hung in the corner of a bedroom to provide a spot to curl up with a good book or rock a baby to sleep. The same chair can be brought to a covered deck or patio so people can swing with the breeze when the weather allows.
Be inconspicuous among nature
Lying on the ground disturbs the lawn and other outdoor components. Being suspended several inches above the ground in a chair or a hammock can help a person blend in with the natural environment. Birds, small animals and insects may not even know you’re there, and that can make them easier to observe. Everyone can appreciate the opportunity to sit back and relax. Hammocks and swinging chairs can help a person feel lighter than air and recharge in the warm summer air.
Nap comfortably outdoors
Who needs an excuse to catch up on missing sleep? If the time presents itself, the sun and the fresh air can induce a deep sense of relaxation. Lying on a hammock or floating in a hanging chair provides that additional soothing rocking motion that can make a cat nap even more enticing.

Summer stargazing Tips for gazing
In some places, temperatures fall quickly after sunset. So, summer stargazing should be accompanied by a blanket, jacket and extra set of clothes. This is particularly crucial in areas with mountains or deserts. If temperatures remain moderate, use the blanket to lie back on for the very best views. Your supply kit should also include bug spray, since any extended time spent outdoors increases the risk of running into pests that might carry illnesses. Summer weather can be very unpredictable, so bring along rain jackets and water-resistant protection for cameras or stargazing tools.
What you’ll see
Constellations turn over our heads all evening, accompanied by the waxing and waning moon and the occasional shooting star. Find a dark place away from city lights, then look for the Big Dipper, one of the most recognizable star groups for those in the Northern Hemisphere. Those seven bright lights are at the center of Ursa Major, or “greater bear” in Latin. Elsewhere, you might find Cassiopeia, Scorpius, Cygnus, Sagittarius among the other constellations and asterisms. You can easily pick out some
satellites as they fly by. The International Space Station is particularly noticeable as it orbits our earth. Many have spotted the Iridium satellite as it flares as well. Neighboring planets will also become more visible as summer continues. Those with a telescope or binoculars may find deeper-sky objects like Brocchii’s Cluster or the Ring Nebula. The famous Perseid meteor showers peak every August, as debris from the comet streaks across our atmosphere.
Study up first
Wondering where to find all of those cool things? Seek out a night sky map for your particular region. Maps from a mid-northern latitude include sights that can be viewed from southern Canada, the lower 48 United States, central and southern Europe, Japan and central Asia. Objects on the map will be lower in the sky for those north of those areas, and the horizon might completely obscure distinctive things like the Summer Triangle — a three-cornered star pattern that’s formed by Altair, Deneb and Vega. There are a total of 88 constellations surrounding the planet, and some are visible year round. Others, however, are seasonal.

Summertime FUN Kayaking dos and don’ts
Kayaking is a healthy and enjoyable activity that attracts new enthusiasts all the time. Part of what makes the sport so popular is the relative ease with which people can get started. Kayaking requires minimal gear (kayaks can be rented if not purchased) and no advanced skills are required. However, kayaking is not to be taken lightly, as water sports can be unpredictable. Adhering to certain dos and don’ts can make kayaking safer. • DO choose the right boat. There are boats rated for kayak racing and those that are strictly for recreational purposes. Some boats are meant for calmer waters and oth-
ers for waves and open seas. • DON’T forget to check the weather forecast before heading out in the water. Storms can come up relatively quickly, and offshore winds can make it challenging to paddle back to shore. • DO let someone know where you’re going and how long you plan to be out on the water. • DON’T touch or get too close to wildlife, as animals can be unpredictable and even dangerous. • DO dress for the water temperature and not the weather outside. This helps ensure your health if you intentionally or acciden-
tally enter the water. • DON’T skip wearing a life jacket/ buoyancy aid. • DO expect to get wet, even if you do not fall in. Splash up will occur from paddles and some water will get in the boat regardless. • DON’T forget to bring along some snacks and water. • DO bring a fellow kayaker along. Whether you’re a novice or a seasoned professional, bringing a friend along ensures someone can go for help if you’re involved in an accident or suffer an injury.
Paddle sports safety tips Paddle sports have become especially popular in recent years. According to the Outdoor Industry Association, nearly 23 million Americans engaged in at least one paddling activity in 2018. Safety is essential when on the water. Both seasoned paddle sports enthusiasts and novices can benefit from revisiting safety techniques and guidelines as they prepare to take to the water this spring and summer. • Enroll in a safety course. Local organizations and governments typically offer safety courses that teach students the laws and regulations that govern activities on the water as well as proper operation procedures.
Such courses can teach novices or remind veterans how to board paddle crafts like canoes, kayaks and paddle boards. These lessons can be invaluable to water sports enthusiasts and many courses are free or inexpensive. • Wear a life jacket. Life jackets are a must-have when engaging in paddle sports. Most states in the United States mandate that there must be at least one U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket per person on board a vessel, and that includes kayaks and paddle boards. The Washington State Parks department notes that some modern life jackets are designed specifically for paddle
sports, so there’s no reason to avoid wearing one while on the water. • Wear a leash. Leashes ensure paddle boards don’t drift away when falling off the board. There are many varieties of leash, and novices should speak with a professional at their local outdoor recreation store to find the right leash for them. • Always check the weather report. It’s vital that paddle sports enthusiasts check the weather report before taking to the water. Athletes should pay particular attention to the forecasts for the bodies of water where they will be paddling. For example, when paddling in an ocean, pay attention to wave
forecasts and information about the tides. When paddling on a river, take note of river flow information when reading the forecast. Recognizing how these variables can affect your time on the water is vital to ensuring a safe trip. • Take essentials with you. Whistles, smart phones (in waterproof bags), sun protection, and drinking water can keep paddlers safe on the water. Take the length of trip into consideration when packing essentials. Paddle sports season has arrived. That makes now a great time to revisit the many ways to stay safe on the water.

Common warning signs of arthritis Arthritis has name recognition, even among people who are not suffering from it. But despite that recognition, arthritis is not as well understood as one might think. According to the Arthritis Foundation, arthritis is not a single disease, but rather an informal way of referring to joint pain or joint disease. In fact, the term “arthritis” is so wide-ranging that it actually refers to more than 100 types of conditions. Despite that complexity, arthritis often produces four important warning signs, regardless of which type of arthritis a person may have. Pain The Arthritis Foundation notes that arthritis-related pain may be constant or intermittent. One common misconception about arthritis pain is that it only occurs during activity or shortly after when a body is at rest.
However, arthritis-related pain can occur while the body is at rest and is not always triggered by an activity that incorporates a part of the body affected by arthritis. In addition, pain from arthritis can be isolated to one area of the body or affect various parts of the body. Swelling Skin over the joints affected by arthritis may become red and swollen. This skin also may feel warm to the touch. The Arthritis Foundation advises anyone who experiences this swelling for three days or longer or more than three times per month to contact a physician. Stiffness This warning sign is, along with pain, the one that is most often associated with arthritis, even by
3 signs of Sun-damaged skin
The summer sun beckons many people outdoors. Soaking up some rays on a warm summer day can be a great way to unwind and get a little color. It’s not always easy to recognize signs of sun damage when spending time outdoors in the summer, especially for people who lay out in the sun hoping to get a tan. Such damage may be overlooked or more evident in the fall, when people begin spending more time indoors. But sun-damaged skin should not be taken lightly. In fact, the Skin Cancer Foundation (SCF) notes that the vast majority of melanomas, the most dangerous form of skin cancer, are caused by the sun. The SCF even notes that one study from researchers in the United Kingdom found that 86 percent of melanomas can be attributed to exposure to the ultraviolet, or UV, radiation from the sun. Sun-damaged skin will not necessarily lead to skin cancer. However, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) notes that sun damage can lead to skin cancer. Going outdoors without adequate protection makes skin vulnerable to sun-related damage. Learning to recognize three of the more common types of sun damage may compel people to visit their physicians and take potentially life-saving steps to prevent future damage. Wrinkles Wrinkles aren’t always a byproduct of
aging. While the Mayo Clinic notes that skin becomes less elastic and more fragile as it ages, increasing the likelihood that wrinkles will develop, wrinkles also can indicate sun-damaged skin. Age spots According to the AAD, age spots, which are flat brown, gray or black spots on the skin, appear on areas of the body that are most often exposed to the sun, including the face and hands. The AAD notes that what looks like an age spot could actually be skin cancer. If any such spots are detected, men and women should see a board-certified dermatologist for a through skin exam.
Loose skin Loose skin is sometimes a byproduct of aging, but it also can be indicative of sun damage. Various products claim to treat loose skin, but the AAD notes that facelift-like results likely won’t come from any product sold in a jar. For example, the AAD says results from skin-firming creams will be subtle at best. Products that contain a retinoid like retinol, which can help the body make more collagen, might produce minor results. Sun-related skin damage can affect peoples’ appearance and even suggest the presence of something more serious, such as skin cancer. Learn more by visiting the American Academy of Dermatology at www.aad.org.
people who don’t suffer from the condition. Stiffness when waking up in the morning or after long periods of being sedentary, such as sitting at a desk during the workday or taking a long car ride, can be symptomatic of arthritis, especially if the stiffness lasts an hour or longer. Difficulty moving a joint The Arthritis Foundation notes that people should not experience difficulty moving, such as when getting out of bed. People who
experience such difficulty may have arthritis. People who recognize any of these warning signs should report them to their physicians immediately. Be as specific as possible when describing these symptoms, as specificity can help physicians design the most effective course of treatment.
