Types of juvenile arthritis Arthritis is a condition many people associate with aging. That association is not necessarily unfounded, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that a person’s risk for most types of arthritis increases as they get older. However, hundreds of thousands of children also suffer from arthritis, proving that this painful condition that affects the joints or tissues around the joints can affect anyone. The Arthritis Foundation® notes that juvenile arthritis, or JA, affects nearly 300,000 children in the United States, while The Arthritis Society reports that three out of every 1,000 kids ages 18 and under in Canada have arthritis. JA is not a disease itself, but rather an umbrella term used to refer to various conditions that can develop in children under the age of 16. The Arthritis Foundation® notes that each condition that falls under the umbrella of JA is distinct, though they also share many common symptoms. Such symptoms include pain, swelling of the joints, redness, and warmth. JA describes many autoimmune and
inflammatory conditions or pediatric rheumatic diseases, including the following. Juvenile idiopathic arthritis Sometimes referred to as “JIA,” this is considered the most common type of arthritis. Oligoarthritis, polyarthritis and juvenile psoriatic arthritis are some of the subtypes of JIA. JIA occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s tissues, resulting in inflammation in joints and possibly even other areas of the body. Juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) JDM causes muscle weakness and a skin rash on the eyelids and knuckles. Most cases of JDM occur in children between the ages of five and 10, and roughly 20 percent of JDM patients experiences joint symptoms, which tend to be mild.
Foundation® notes that systemic lupus erythematosus, or SLE, is the condition most often referred to when speaking of childhood lupus. SLE can affect every organ system in the body, and children with SLE may experience fatigue, pain or swelling in the joints, skin, rashes, fever, or hair loss, among other symptoms.
Juvenile lupus Lupus is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system inexplicably turns against the body. The Arthritis
Kawasaki disease Kawasaki disease, which usually affects children age two and younger, is not well understood. The disease often begins with
How to self-test for skin cancer
Skin cancer is a global threat. According to the World Health Organization, incidences of non-melanoma and melanoma skin cancers have been increasing for decades. Near the end of the second decade of the 21st century, there were between two and three million new cases of non-melanoma and more than 130,000 new cases of melanoma skin cancers each year. Though skin cancer poses a significant threat, it’s a threat that can be contained, especially when prevention methods are embraced from an early age. In fact, the Prevent Cancer® Foundation reports that individuals who protect their skin during the first 18 years of their lives can reduce their risk for some types of skin cancer by as much as 78 percent. Self-care is essential in cancer prevention. When it comes to protecting yourself against skin cancer, self-care includes self-testing skin. Self-tests are simple, and the American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD) offers this guide on how to perform a skin self-exam. • Know what to look for. The AAD’s body mole map (available at aad.org) provides useful information on what to look for when conducting a skin cancer self-test. Look for spots that are different from others or any spot that changes, itches or bleeds. • Examine your body in a full-length mirror. Look at your entire body, includ-
ing areas that are not necessarily exposed to the sun. Examine your body front and back. Raise your arms when examining the right and left sides of your body. • Examine the underarms, forearms and palms. When conducting a skin self-test, bend your elbows and examine forearms, underarms and palms carefully. • Be just as meticulous with your lower body. It’s not just your upper body that requires examination. Also examine your legs, the area between your toes and the soles of your feet. Don’t forget to check the back of your legs in the mirror as well. • Examine your neck and scalp. The neck and even the scalp is vulnerable to exposure to the sun and potentially harmful ultraviolet rays. Use a hand mirror to examine the back of your neck and your scalp. When inspecting the scalp, part your hair so you can get a closer look. • Check your back and buttocks with a hand mirror. Keep the hand mirror out after examining your neck and scalp and use it to check your back and buttocks for warning signs. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends that individuals conduct self-exams once per month. When conducted correctly, these exams can increase the chances of catching skin cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages.
fever of 102 F or as high as 104 F, and the fever may last five days or as long as two weeks. Symptoms such as coughing, runny nose, diarrhea, and vomiting also may appear, though such symptoms also may indicate something else is present. Peeling skin in the genital area, hands and feet are some additional symptoms of Kawasaki disease. Juvenile arthritis comes in many forms. Parents who suspect their child has JA should consult their pediatricians immediately.

2022 Summer Outdoor Spaces
OUTDOOR SPACES A stronger greener lawn
Summer temperatures can cause a great amount of stress to your lawn. Reducing this stress will promote a healthy lawn and help it grow to its full potential. Some major stressful situations your lawn might experience come from extreme heat, lack of rain and heavy foot traffic. These factors will make it harder for your grass to grow. Other factors that might become a more serious risk to an already stressed-out lawn include weeds and bugs. Take time to practice the following strategies to ease the stress on your lawn and give yourself a beautiful yard where you can relax after a long day.
MOWING TIPS
The way you mow your grass has a big impact on the overall health of your lawn. Be sure to keep your blades
sharp, as dull blades shred grass, making it harder to retain moisture. Also, shredded grass will turn brown, leaving your lawn looking dull if clippings are not cleaned after mowing. Your blade should be kept at a high setting. Keeping your grass taller allows it to grow longer roots making it easier to reach the rich moisture deeper in the soil.
During the summer, watering your lawn before 10 a.m. is beneficial. It gives your lawn time to absorb most of the water it needs before evaporation sets in, and it can dry out before nighttime comes. Nighttime watering promotes bacterial and fungus diseases, as they depend on wet areas for reproduction and spreading purposes. Soaking your lawn at night will give

SEEDING AFTER A STRESSFUL SUMMER
If you noticed your lawn showing signs of stress, you can give it an advantage for next summer by seeding it in the fall. Ask your nursery for a great breed that thrives in heat and drought in your area. Your seeds should be ready to flourish by the time summer comes back around.

these pathogens ample time to overtake your lawn. The United States Environmental Protection Agency reports that Americans waste up to 50% of water used for irrigation due to an improper watering schedule. They encourage testing your lawn by stepping on a patch of grass. If it springs back, it is still holding proper moisture levels.

2022 Summer Outdoor Spaces
A guide to buying and setting up a bird bath Whether your favorite form of outdoor recreation includes sitting on the patio reading or digging in the garden, there’s a good chance that you will be sharing the space with local wildlife. Optimizing opportunities to view and interact with backyard wildlife can make the great outdoors even more enjoyable. Making a backyard hospitable to birds can increase the chances for sightings and hearing their sweet songs. Installing a bird bath can be a step in the right direction. Bird baths can make yards more attractive to birds. Birds require a supply of fresh, clean water for drinking and bathing. By setting up a bath, homeowners can attract not only seed-loving birds, but those that don’t eat seeds and wouldn’t normally congregate around feeders, indicates All About Birds. Experts surmise that birds may bathe to maintain their feathers. Not all bird baths are constructed in the same fashion. Many bird baths sold in stores are better suited for decoration than for serving as functional baths. There are four general types of bird bath: standing pedestal, hanging bath, deck-mounted, and ground-level. In
general, the lower a bird bath is to the ground, the more likely birds are to use it. Most natural sources of water birds use are on or near the ground. Therefore, ground-level bird baths may be the best investments. It is important to keep the water in a bird bath shallow (around two inches of water or less). This enables birds to splash around safely and wade in. Birds do not want to slide around, so a material that is coated and slippery, like glazed ceramic or glass, may not be too popular. Rough stone or a bird bath modified with pea gravel or rocks can give birds steady footing. Place the bird bath in the shade if possible to ensure the water is cool and fresh. Locate it by a tree so the birds can hop up to a branch and preen afterwards. All About Birds also says that a bird bath is more attractive if it has a dripping or moving water feature, as this is often irresistible to birds. Another way to ensure the bath will be used is to keep it clean and maintained. Change the water every day or two. Rinse off the bath to remove droppings, bugs and other debris.

2022 Summer Outdoor Spaces
Guide to outdoor lighting Lighting is an essential component of interior and exterior home design. Not only does lighting add style and make spaces more appealing, when done correctly, it also makes a home safer and more functional. Homeowners who plan to utilize outdoor spaces like backyards, front porches and walkways to the fullest should think carefully about lighting. These guidelines can assist with selecting outdoor lighting fixtures.
WALL, POST AND CEILING LIGHTS
Outdoor lighting fixtures beyond security options come in a variety of styles, according to Lamps USA. Wall lights are mounted to the outdoor wall of the home. These typically flank doorways or the garage. Post lights are often installed on the posts of decks and porches, or are free-standing on properties, providing visibility but also style. Ceiling-mounted lights may be above doorways or installed in any structure that has an overhead area. Warm-colored temperature bulbs in these fixtures can create an inviting atmosphere that is not too bright and jarring, especially when multiple lighting fixtures are working together. When selecting lighting for wall-mounted fixtures,
experts suggest sizing up if you are not sure of the size to pick, as lights will look much smaller in scale from a distance.
SECURITY LIGHTING
Flood lights and security lights are a good investment for those who want to beef up visibility and security around the home. These lights are high-intensity and designed to illuminate large areas. The brightness and reach can serve as a preventive measure to keep animals and even criminals away. Motion-sensor lights will immediately engage if something crosses the path of the sensor. Some lights will remain on from dusk until dawn. Lowes Home Improvement suggests using the correct wattage on outdoor security lights so they flood an area thoroughly without affecting neighboring properties.
ACCENT AND LANDSCAPE LIGHTING
A bevy of accent lighting choices are available. Accent lighting is designed to enhance the mood and appearance of certain elements of a landscape. Accent lighting is not intended to add bright light. For example, upward-directed lights can be cast on trees or shrubs to accentuate their shapes. Accent lighting also may call out a structure, such
as a garden or a fountain. While accent lighting may be hard-wired, homeowners who want the luxury of changing lighting can opt for solar fixtures, which are more mobile but not as bright.
ADDITIONAL POINTERS
When shopping for bulbs, consider the number of lumens. A standard 100-watt bulb produces around 1,600 lumens. Security lights should range from 700 to 1,300 lumens for optimal brightness. Other lights needn’t be so bright.
Furthermore, ensure that any fixtures that are being used are safety-rated for outdoors. Wet-rated fixtures are designed to withstand direct exposure to outdoor elements, advises the design experts at Schoolhouse, a lighting and lifestyle goods company. Damp-rated fixtures are built for outdoor locations protected from harsh weather. Look for the product details or work with an electrician to choose the right lighting choices. Lighting can transform outdoors spaces for the better.
How to add shade to a deck or patio Homeowners eagerly await the arrival of the warm weather so they can cast off the remnants of cabin fever and bask in the sunshine. However, as summer nears its dog days, the same sun homeowners once coveted can contribute to uncomfortable conditions in outdoor entertaining spaces. Meteorologists at WHAS11 in Kentucky took to their neighborhoods in
July 2020 to test just how hot surfaces can get in the sun during peak daytime temperatures. Concrete sitting in the sun almost all day reached a temperature of 134.7 F, while the same concrete in the shade clocked in at just under 80 F. When air temperatures are around 90 F, unshaded concrete and asphalt can be 125 F and 140 F, respectively. While wood decking may not be as hot

as asphalt and concrete, it still can get steamy underfoot. Homeowners who want to be able to enjoy their outdoor spaces in an array of temperatures can think about investing in shade solutions. Sun-blocking ideas like awnings, shade trees and large umbrellas can help people enjoy their yards all day long.
CANOPY
A patio canopy is typically a freestanding unit that can be installed over a patio or a deck. Some people prefer to bolt it down so it will not be knocked over in windy conditions. The fabric on the canopy can be removed during the offseason, helping to improve its longevity.
AWNING
Awnings may be stationary or retractable. Many are installed directly onto a home and can cast shade on specific areas of outdoor entertaining spaces.
SHADE SAIL
Similar to an awning but a bit less structurally rigid, shade sails are large pieces of triangular fabric installed
over areas of a patio, pool or landscape, according to The Family Handyman. Shade sails are light and airy and can be customized.
TREES
A natural way to increase shade in a yard is to plant more shade trees. If sun glare is an issue all year long, and it’s not just the heat of the sun that is troublesome, think about planting evergreen trees. Deciduous cousins will drop their leaves in fall and only be effective during the warm weather.
PATIO UMBRELLAS
Many umbrellas start at around $25. Umbrellas can be paired with patio tables, while stationary cantilever umbrellas sit out of the way on their own heavy-duty stands. A cantilever umbrella tends to provide more shade than patio table umbrellas.
CURTAINS
Homeowners can block sunlight outdoors the way they do inside, offers MSN. Hang curtains from the sides of canopies or between posts on a deck to provide shade and cozy spaces.

2022 Summer Outdoor Spaces
Trends for the season Home and garden trends for 2022 will include a return to modern water features and natural settings, with a continuing focus on sustainability and well being that began during the pandemic’s early phases. Spending more time in our homes meant spending more time in our yards, and that’s spearheaded a move away from high-maintenance looks. Large plantings, pollinator-friendly choices, and styles that mimic the world around us offer comfortable settings while impacting the planet positively. After all, who really liked lawn edging anyway?
BOLDER WATER FEATURES
Water features are typically popular, annually selling more than statues, solar lights and other outdoor accessories. The difference in 2022 will be in design, as many of the most popular styles go sleek and modern. Sphere water features and water blades are increasingly sought after, since they look like sculptures but function like
traditional water features. Many are also experimenting with so-called xeriscaping, where gardeners create water-efficient spaces that help minimize irrigation in changing climates. Sensory gardens made huge in-roads as people began spending more time at home, and that trend shows no sign of abating.
GROW YOUR OWN MEAL
Modern home and garden choices are increasingly incorporating edible plants so you can grow your own meals. That’s coupled with a trend toward more plant-based diets around the world. In one study, the number of vegetarians and vegans had increased by a stunning 360% over the last decade. Even if you’ve stuck to a more traditional approach to meal planning, home gardening has its benefits: Some take part to avoid rising food prices and pandemic-related shortages, while others are simply focused on the freshness that organics promise. Many vegetables, herbs and salad leaves are

very easily grown in patio containers or wall planters. A greenhouse will yield fresh food all year; those with smaller spaces may consider beans, peas and squashes.
‘RE-WILDING’ YOUR SPACE
Whether called re-wilding or nature-scaping, the trend of allowing your yard to return to some form of its natural state will be a huge trend in
2022. More consciously designed lawns and gardens are giving way to spaces that mimic the great outdoors. They’re more earth friendly, and much easier to maintain. Pair native grasses, rocks and other plantings with neutral-colored furniture and natural hardscape material, and your urban setting is instantly transformed into a backcountry getaway.
Plants that can keep bugs away Outdoor living spaces have become increasingly popular among homeowners in recent years, and that popularity grew even more over the last year. As social distancing guidelines issued in response to the COVID-19 pandemic encouraged people to stay home as much as possible, a desire for accessible, enjoyable outdoor spaces grew. A 2020 study of Google trends data from the home decor retailer Living Spaces found that searches for items such as patio daybeds and small-space outdoor furniture grew by more than 200 percent between the early part of 2020 and the middle of the year. If outdoor living spaces are in demand, so, too, are ways to make those spaces as comfortable as possible. There’s much homeowners can do to make the most of their outdoor
spaces, but they might feel helpless against some unwanted, often relentless guests: insects. Insects can turn relaxing days on the patio into wars of attrition with hungry bugs like mosquitoes. Thankfully, there are ways to fight back against insects while simultaneously adding a little aesthetic appeal to the backyard. The Farmer’s Almanac notes that planting these insect-repelling plants around the patio or backyard can help homeowners successfully repel unwanted insects, including mosquitoes.
BASIL
Basil can provide the best of both worlds, as it’s been found to repel flies and moths and also makes for a tasty addition to pasta sauces and other dishes.
LAVENDER
Lavender is a fragrant plant that adds a pop of purple and has been known to repel mosquitoes, fleas, flies, and moths.
burst of purple to your patio. And though they aren’t believed to repel mosquitoes, alliums have been found to be helpful against cabbage worms, aphids, carrot flies, and slugs.
THYME
CHRYSANTHEMUMS
Also a valuable ingredient to keep in the kitchen, thyme can help keep hungry mosquitoes at bay.
MINT
The Farmer’s Almanac warns that it’s easy to overplant mint, so homeowners should only plant with care and make a concerted effort to prevent overgrowth. Also great in the kitchen, mint has long been considered an effective mosquito repellant.
ALLIUMS
Like lavender, alliums can add a

If ants are drawing homeowners’ ire, chrysanthemums may do the trick. These eye-catching flowers also are believed to repel fleas and roaches, among other insects.
MARIGOLDS
The scent of this awe-inspiring plant is known to repel mosquitoes and other pests. Marigolds also attract insects like ladybugs that are known to consume aphids, which are minute bugs that reproduce rapidly and feed by sucking sap from plants.

2022 Summer Outdoor Spaces
Turn your yard into a vacation-worthy oasis Warm weather means more time to relax outdoors. For those homeowners lucky enough to have entertaining spaces outside, spring and summer provides plenty of opportunities to enjoy fresh air under the sun or stars. Over the last few years, families have become especially familiar with what works about their yards and where there is room for improvement. Pandemic-related travel restrictions and early stay-at-home mandates resulted in plenty of time spent in backyards on staycations. Even though many such restrictions have been lifted, homeowners may have seen the benefits of having functional respites right outside their doors. A backyard renovation can cost anywhere from $5,000 to $50,000. The American Society of Landscape Architects suggests homeowners budget the cost of a major landscaping project at between 5 and 10
percent of their home’s value. Large or small, here are ways to make an outdoor oasis at home.
PROVIDE OUTDOOR ATMOSPHERE
Create a bespoke bistro vibe by using freestanding planters and posts along with hanging lights to make an intimate outdoor hangout spot at night. For those with permanent structures, like a deck or a gazebo, lights can be strung across the area or on railings or edging.
HANG A HAMMOCK
Few things evoke feelings of relaxation better than a hammock. Fitted between two trees (or two posts if trees are sparse), a hammock is an ideal place to grab a nap or read a book. Additional oasis-inspired ideas include outdoor kitchens, lanterns, cascading water features, and bird feeders to attract the sounds of nature.
CREATE LIVING PRIVACY
Living in close proximity to neighbors may make privacy harder to come by. Wood or vinyl fences, however effective, may not provide the all-natural look many people desire. Vertical gardening, which trains easy-care vines like English ivy, Clematis or various climbing roses to grow on trellis or fencing adds greenery and privacy. Hedges and fast-growing shrubs also can be used for natural barriers.
EXTEND THE LIVING SPACE
Decks and patios can help make outdoor entertaining areas more comfortable by eliminating the need to sit on the grass or gravel. Plus, they add another “room” to the home. When paired with weatherproof patio furniture, such as sofas, loungers and tables, a private seating area can be crafted and utilized for any number of entertaining desires.

2022 Summer Outdoor Spaces
The dos and don’ts of fire pits
Many homeowners relish any opportunity to retreat to their back yards, where they can put up their feet and relax in the great outdoors. That retreat-like escape is made even more relaxing when sitting around a fire pit. Fire pits can be found in millions of suburban backyards across the globe. Fire pits have become so popular that a 2016 survey of landscape architects conducted by the American Society of Landscape Architects revealed they were the most sought after outdoor design element. Fire pits remain wildly popular a half decade after that survey. Homeowners who are only now joining the fire pit revolution can keep these dos and don’ts in mind as they plan their summer s’mores sessions. DO keep the fire pit a safe distance away from the home. Fire pits should be located a safe distance from the home at all times, but especially when they’re in use. Home design experts recommend keeping fire pits a minimum of 10 to 20 feet away from a house or other structure, such as a shed or a detached garage. The further away the fire is from houses and other structures, the less likely those structures are to catch on fire. DON’T place the fire pit beneath trees or next to shrubs. Though fire pits should be kept safe distances away from a house and other structures, it’s important that they’re not placed beneath trees or next to shrubs. Shrubs and low hanging branches can easily catch embers and be lit ablaze, so make sure fire pits are not placed in locations that increase that risk. DO clean out seasonal debris. It can be tempting to let seasonal debris resting inside the fire pit burn away during the season’s first s’mores ses-
sion. But burning debris poses a serious safety risk, as embers can easily be blown out of the fire pit and catch nearby trees or shrubs or even a home on fire. The National Fire Protection Association advises homeowners that embers blowing from a backyard fire pose the same threat to homes as if they are from a wildfire. DON’T let fire pits burn near flammable materials. Store firewood piles a safe distance away from the fire pit while it’s in operation. It may be convenient to keep firewood right next to the fire pit while the fire is burning, but that increases the risk that embers will land on firewood and start a fire outside of the pit. DO check the weather report prior to starting the fire. Windy weather increases the risk of embers blowing around and potentially landing on the house, other structures around the property or trees. If the weather report is calling for gusting winds, burn a fire on another night. DON’T leave a fire pit fire burning. Unattended recreational fires are illegal and incredibly dangerous. Homeowners should never leave fire pit fires burning unattended or allow fires to slowly die out overnight. Always extinguish the fire before going inside and stop adding wood to the fire roughly one hour before you plan to go inside. Water or sand can be poured on ashes to extinguish the fire. Once homeowners are confident a fire has been extinguished, ashes can be spread around to ensure there are no hot spots still burning. If there are, start the extinguishing process over again. A night around the fire pit is a summertime tradition in many households. Safety must be as much a part of such traditions as s’mores.
