Make More Interest on Your Money Are you earning next to nothing on your savings right now? If so, you’re not alone. What can you do to earn more interest on your money? If you’re looking for a low-risk place to park your cash that pays more interest than your existing bank account, you have options. Here are four strategies worth considering. Consider using higher yield saving accounts – Remember the days of 3% Interest on Certificates of Deposit? While those are nowhere to be found anywhere and certainly not with mega banks, there are ways to invest so that your liquid savings does earn you money. To get more out of your savings, consider banking with a financial institution which offers a high interest savings account like Highmark’s Kasasa Saver which pays up to 1% on balances up to $50,000. Look for free checking accounts with rewards – Unlike banks, credit unions have historically been a lower cost option with ‘zero’ maintenance fees and free checking. Better yet, look for a bank or

credit union which offers you an interest-bearing checking accounts like Highmark’s Free Kasasa Cash Checking which pays up to 2.75% on balances up to $10,000 or the Free Kasasa Cash Back Checking which pays 4% cash back on debit card charges up to $200 per year. You will also get refunds on ATM fees up to $20/month. Join a credit union – On average, credit unions tend to offer slightly better interest rates than banks. Since credit unions are owned by their members, they tend to have lower fees as well. To join a credit union such as Highmark, for example, you simply need to live or work in the Black Hills or Campbell, Crook, Niobrara and Weston County, Wyoming in order to qualify. Got more questions about how to make your money work for you? Come see the Highmark Credit Union team in person or in the drive-thru at the Belle Fourche or Spearfish locations. Sponsored Content

SCHOOL BUS SAFETY TIPS MOST SERIOUS SCHOOL BUS INCIDENTS OCCUR WHEN CHILDREN ARE OUTSIDE THE BUS, AND 75% OF THESE INCIDENTS INVOLVED CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF NINE. Make sure your children know and follow these rules: • Be on time for the bus • Never run to or from the bus • Be alert and stand back from the curb • Don’t push or shove • Stay in your seat • Don’t yell or shout • Always obey the driver • Wait for the driver’s signal before crossing • Always cross at least 12 feet in front of the bus • Never crawl under a school bus Meet the bus. Coordinate with other parents to ensure an adult is present at the bus stop every day, especially when children under the age of nine are present. Avoid using gadgets near buses. Headphones, cell phones, MP3 players all distract our kids from knowing when a bus is approaching. Urge your kids to wait to use them when they’re a safe distance from the bus. Remove drawstrings. Clothing your children may not always be safe. Drawstrings can catch in playground equipment, fences, schoool bus doors and escalators. Remove, shorten or replace drawstrings with another kind of fastener.

How often do kids need eye exams? Many people expect their vision to fade as they grow older. Such expectations are not unfounded, as the National Eye Institute notes that certain vision changes, including diminished vision and difficulty distinguishing colors, are a normal part of aging. But even children can experience changing vision, which only highlights the importance of kids receiving routine eye exams. Eye examination frequency depends on the age of the child and the condition of his or her eyesight at the time of each exam. The American Optometric Association (AOA) has established these guidelines for pediatric eye examination frequency to help parents know when to get their youngsters’ vision checked.

Birth to 2 years

Children in this age group whose physicians have deemed them asymptomatic of potential eye conditions or at low risk of developing eye conditions should have their eyes examined sometime between six and 12 months of age. Kids who may be at risk should adhere to the same schedule, though the AOA notes that exams for at-risk children may need to be conducted more frequently, even in this age group,

than kids who are symptom-free. Eye doctors will speak with parents and recommend an eye exam schedule based on their initial examination.

3 through 5 years

Children between the ages of three and five who are at low risk of developing eye conditions should have their eyes examined at least once between their third and fifth birthdays. The same goes for kids who are at risk, though doctors may recommend more frequent examinations for such youngsters.

6 through 18 years

Whether they are at risk of eye conditions or not, children between the ages of six and 18 should have their eyes examined before first grade and annually thereafter. Youngsters who are at risk may need more frequent examinations as they get older. Eye examinations are an important component of child healthcare. By adhering to AOA eye examination guidelines, parents can ensure any vision problems their children develop are quickly caught and can be treated before they adversely affect youngsters’ lives.

Factors that can increase your risk of skin damage from the sun Skin damage may be the furthest thing from many people’s minds when they’re planning to spend summer afternoons outdoors. However, the American Cancer Society (ACS) notes that no one is immune from the damage that can be caused by ultraviolet rays from the sun. That includes people with naturally darker skin. According to the ACS, people with light skin are much more likely to suffer from skin damage caused by the sun’s UV rays, and such individuals also are at greater risk for skin cancer. But darker-skinned individuals of all ethnic backgrounds also can suffer from UV-related skin damage. Fair skin is not the only factor that can make people more vulnerable to skin-related sun damage or even skin cancer. The World Cancer Research Fund and the American Institute for Cancer Research report that non-melanoma skin cancer is the fifth most commonly occurring cancer in the world, while melanoma is 19th on that list. Such statistics underscore the importance of recognizing those factors that could increase your risk for sun-related skin damage, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes is one of the risk factors for skin cancer. The ACS urges all people to be careful in the sun, and people who have any of these risk factors should be especially careful.

• A past skin cancer diagnosis • A family history of skin cancer, especially melanoma • The presence of many moles, irregular moles or large moles on your skin • You have freckles and burn before tanning • You have blue or green eyes, or blond, red or light brown hair • You live or vacation at high altitudes, as UV rays are stronger the higher up you are • You live or vacation in tropical or subtropical climates • You work indoors all week and then get intense sun exposure on weekends • You spend a lot of time outdoors • You have been diagnosed with certain autoimmune diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE, or lupus) • You have certain inherited conditions that increase your risk of skin cancer, such as xeroderma pigmentosum or nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome, also known as Gorlin syndrome • You have a medical condition that weakens your immune system, such as infection with HIV • You have had an organ transplant • You take medicines that lower or suppress your immune system • You take medicines that make your skin more sensitive to sunlight.

School is easier with clear vision & healthy eyes. Let us help with a back-to-school vision exam!
