THE FALL SPLENDOR OF SPEARFISH CANYON By Mark Watson When the fall colors in Spearfish Canyon reach their peak, you can bet there will be visitors clambering to see the beauty of the deciduous trees. Rusts and oranges are found in the oaks. Gold aspen and birch leaves quiver in the breeze. The cottonwoods and willows show off their bright yellow. Ruby reds show up near the ground on smatterings of sumac.
The dark green backdrops from the pines combine with all of these to make an exquisite palette of colors. “Spearfish Canyon is our number one natural attraction,” said Mistie Caldwell, the executive director of Visit Spearfish. “It is all year long, but the fall is a totally different experience than in the summer.”
She said people, mainly adult couples and retirees, start calling her office as early as April asking when they should come out to see the colors of Spearfish Canyon in their prime. “Adult couples plan their vacations after school starts again and before winter,” Caldwell said. “As we get closer to the day, it’s people from the five-state region asking, ‘When’s the peak?’” Fall colors in Spearfish Canyon reach their peak near the end of September or the first part of October. Caldwell said. “It’s interesting. Most people who call think the colors change a lot earlier than they do. A lot of people

plan their vacations around Labor Day. They get a little concerned when you tell them the last week of September.” But when September does roll around, the visitor numbers can increase even over summer month totals. “Linda Ahlers, former general manager of Spearfish Canyon Lodge, always says that ‘Sturgis has their Motorcycle Rally., we have a leaf rally. That’s true. It’s our signature event, the changing of the leaves.”

PACK FOR SUCCESS
While you may do most of your hunting from the same general location, how you get there can sometimes be a challenge when carrying gear. You don’t want to alert nearby wildlife with a loud UTV or ATV, so walking is usually your best bet. Packing appropriately can lessen the exhaustion you feel throughout your trek and ensure you’re alert when game is in your sights. Keeping your gear’s weight manageable isn’t the only factor you should consider. Here are some other beneficial tips to remember when preparing for a hunting excursion, from the experts at Field and Stream. SAFETY FIRST Make sure you save room in your bag for the crucial safety equipment every hunter requires. Pack a first aid kit with gauzes, bandages and ointments to help protect yourself from cuts or scrapes. You should also remember to bring a properly fitted harness and safety belt if you will be scaling heights to reach your stand.

ing a wounded animal. Always tell a hunting partner before you venture off alone, so they know which way you are going. PACK WITH CARE You don’t want to find yourself rooting around in your bag when the adrenaline is pumping as you prepare yourself to take a shot or track your target. Instead, pack your most important items in the most accessible areas of your bag. Make use of extra pockets to dedicate to special tools you know will be used. You should know exactly where to look when these items are required as it can be the difference in a bountiful hunting trip or going home empty handed.
A HUNTER’S PARADISE There aren’t too many places in the country that allow hunters to enjoy more than a 50 percent success rate every year while pursuing their quarry. But Black Hills hunters can do just that and have done so for the last decade.
ANTELOPE
NAVIGATION TOOLS Whether you prefer an old-fashioned compass or a state-of-the-art GPS system, knowing where you are and how to get back to camp is crucial. It’s easy to lose your sense of direction when track-

BIRDS
The GF&P also offers two seasons for turkey — fall and spring. The nearby waters offer waterfowl hunting opportunities for the resident and migrating ducks and geese. Grouse and pheasants can also be hunted north of Spearfish.
DEER
The Black Hills has both whitetail and mule deer populations with whitetails being more plentiful. At higher elevations, hunters are more likely to find mule deer, as wildlife managers with the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks are trying to bolster their numbers.
SHOOTING RANGES
MOUNTAIN LION
The newest big game season in the Black Hills is for mountain lions. The first season began in 2005. That year, hunters surprised many wildlife officials and lion hunters when a subquota was reached in 13 days closing the season. Some officials thought if two lions were shot in the entire season, the state would have a successful hunt.
ELK
Also found in the Black Hills is a coveted elk population. Open to residents only, the wait, at times, can be up to 10 years or more to draw a coveted tag. But when that envelope comes in the mail, hunters can enjoy a quality hunt pursuing large bulls and good numbers of cows. The herd, isolated from others in neighboring states, has genetics that produces trophy bulls quickly. SPORTS AND ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS With the first snowfall, kids are excited and clamoring to get outside and enjoy the weather. Almost all winter sporting activities can be enjoyed by children of all ages if you take time to prepare in advance and ensure their safety. So whether you’re heading indoors to the local skating rink or outdoors for some sledding or skiing fun, here’s how to keep the kids entertained this season — and keep the cocoa hot for when they return! SLEDDING
If there’s a hilly area near your home, chances are you’ll soon see kids sledding on a
traditional sled, saucer, toboggan or even a makeshift craft such as a garbage can lid. Your kids will want to join in the fun, but make sure they’re protected by extra layers of clothing to keep them safe for the eventual tumbles. If you have toddlers or younger children, you’ll want to ride along to help guide the sled. SKIING
Families with avid skiers encourage their children to begin young to learn ropes of the slopes. Some kids begin very young, as early as 2, but children are likely to develop more confidence and less fear around the age of 5. Lessons are recommended to learn techniques and safety as they hit the slopes and trails. SNOWBOARDING
Snowboarding is the winter equivalent of skating and kids like to start young. Like skiing, lessons are the most practical way to teach them balance, safety and techniques. Because it’s a standing sport, you’ll want to ensure kids of all ages wear the proper safety equipment, such as helmets, pads and guards. ICE SKATING
Ice skating is classic winter sport that allows parents to enjoy the ice themselves while lending the younger ones a helping hand as they learn this tricky-butaddictive activity. It make take time for kids to find their balance, but once they
TRY ICE CLIMBING
If you’re an adrenaline hound who has trouble scratching that itch during the winter months, consider trying ice climbing. The activity evolved from rock climbing and includes scaling icy glaciers, mountains or even professional courses. If you’re new to the sport, work with an expert to learn the ropes before trekking on an adventure alone. CHOOSING THE RIGHT GEAR
One of the first tools to master for climbing beginners is called crampons. This essential equipment straps to your boots to gain traction while ascending ice and creates ledges. When researching different models, make sure it’s intended use is for ice climbing, many units are made for simply walking on ice or scaling rocks. Safety equipment is also essential. Invest in a quality helmet and harness to protect yourself if you wind up in harm’s way. Before making a purchase, make sure they fit while you’re wearing your gear. Warm clothes and spacious backpacks are other must-haves before attempting to climb. TECHNIQUES & SAFETY
Try to find a facility in your community that offers lessons that teach proper techniques and climbing safety. The training is imperative and will teach you how to react to emergencies that commonly occur. It’s a good idea for your first trip to travel with a group of thrill-seekers in case danger arises. Have an emergency plan in place
that includes reaching medical professionals, a surplus of food and water and a physical map of the area. FINDING CLIMBING LOCATIONS
Once you gain the confidence to begin the adventure, you should know how to find ice walls to conquer. In addition to asking your trainer about favorable locations for your skill level, speak with peers about their favorite places to climb. Spearfish Canyon is home to three climbable flows. Contact Visit Spearfish about climbing groups and guides in the area. The scenic flows offered in Spearfish Canyon include:
do many become devoted to the sport. Again, safety is paramount so ensure younger skaters wear helmets and extra layers of clothes for eventual slips and falls. ICE HOCKEY
Team competition is the name of the game in hockey. And like any team sport, hockey can provide the invaluable benefits of children learning to interact with others and working together for a common goal while having great fun. Kids can begin relatively young after they’ve mastered the art of skating solo and can focus on the game. OTHER ACTIVITIES
Build a snowman: Children of all ages can participate in the fun of building the first snowman of the season. Kids and parents can work together to bring their snowman to life with hats, sticks and household and food objects for the eyes and nose. Build an igloo: Kids love forts and the winter provides them the opportunity to discover igloos and snow forts that are easily constructed with their hands or with the help of a shovel. Snowshoeing: If your child can walk, he or she can snowshoe. And they likely love the opportunity to tramp through the snow, Bigfoot-style. Snowshoes for all ages are available at most sporting goods stores, along with poles for balance.
Get back to the activities you enjoy. Physical therapy can help you move better.
1. Bridal Veil Falls With its close proximity and high visibility to the road, this is the most popular and accessible flow. It offers about a 60-foot climb rated at WI3. 2. 11th Hour Gulch Farther up the Canyon, climbers can find this narrow gully that offers a 60-foot climb rated from WI3 to WI4. 3. Terminator Pillar This is located near the base of the Canyon, across the street from Skeletal Remains, up the canyon wall to Community Caves. It previously stood as one narrow column of ice rising from the floor to the roof above, but recently the flow spans a wider section and is rated WI4.

SNOWMOBILING IN THE BLACK HILLS
Snowmobiling season means sledheads have 350 miles of groomed trails to navigate in the Black Hills. Early season storms usually allow much of the Black Hills to have “adequate snow” for the trails, but the
farther south you go, the less snow is on the ground, said Shannon Percy, Black Hills trails district supervisor. Each year trails are updated and moved due to logging contracts with the Forest Service, which has
contractors hauling out trees, infested with mountain pine beetles. “Sometimes we have to move trails to accommodate their use,” Percy said. “Snowmobilers need to be aware that we change our maps every year
because of these reroutes, so they need to make sure they have a new, updated map.” Snowmobilers can ride on the trails as well as public land that is not posted closed.
PLAN YOUR ADVENTURE SEASON:
PAY YOUR DUES:
In South Dakota, all snowmobiles must be properly licensed to operate on public or private lands, except those private lands owned by the snowmobile’s operator.
DECEMBER 15 – MARCH 31 • Call ahead for trail conditions.
CHOOSE YOUR TRAILS:
• Residents - FREE - rider and vehicle must be licensed and registered in the state of South Dakota - purchase at County Treasurer’s office in Deadwood • Non-residents - $40/5-day permit - unless licensed and registered in another state - trail permits from other states not accepted - purchase at trailside vendors or online at gfp.sd.gov/to-do/snowmobile • Must carry liability insurance
BIG HILL/TINTON TRAIL SYSTEM • 9 miles south of Spearfish on Tinton Road TRAILSHEAD TRAIL SYSTEM • 13 miles southwest of Cheyenne Crossing

The state offers permits for motorcycles that convert to tracked vehicles with a ski. If an owners vehicle is titled as a motorcycle but meets the GF&P’s definition as a snowmobile they can purchase a $20 permit valid for the snowmobile season

JOB ADVICE FOR
NEW GRADS
One of the biggest difficulties facing new college graduates is landing their first professional opportunity. How do you get experience without having any? If you’re a new grad trying to answer this question, it’s important to remember a few things. UNDERSTAND YOUR GOALS Unfortunately, many young professionals do not start mapping out career goals early enough. The first step of landing a great first job is knowing what you’re trying to achieve. Overall, you’re looking to set the foundation for a sustainable career that gives you chances for advancement. Ideally, your job search strategy starts in high school with the help of your guidance counselor. Starting early means you are more likely to find internship or job shadowing opportunities with professionals in your potential career field. And while it’s hard to predict your entire career path, it’s critical to start thinking about your first job targets as soon as possible. ASK THE EXPERTS What better way to find solid career advice than by reaching out to the people
who have already “been there, done that?” Utilize alumni networking opportunities through your college or university. Ask your professors for guidance on how to turn your education into a strategic first career move. Leaning on the advice of experts will help give you a better idea of opportunities to attack immediately after college, or maybe even as an intern as you finish up your degree. Set up virtual meetings with your connections, keep them informed of any new projects you’re working on and send them handwritten thank-you notes when your classes end. These small things can help you stay top of mind when it comes time to activate your networks for your job search. AVOIDING UNDEREMPLOYMENT Researchers from the Strada Institute for the Future of Work and Burning Glass Technologies recently completed a study that found that 43% of new grads and first-time job seekers land jobs they’re overqualified for.
Tuesday, August 24, 2021, Page 17A
Their research also found that twothirds of those job seekers were still underemployed five years later and 74% of those underemployed at the five-year mark were still underemployed 10 years after graduating. In terms of financial impact, underemployment can have serious financial implications. Underemployed graduates earn about $10,000 less per year than those in jobs that match their credentials, according to the study. This compounding effect underscores the importance of finding the right vocational fit right out of the gates. FIND SOMETHING IN-DEMAND Business Insider recently released its list of top 30 career opportunities of 2021. See the list below and identify if there are any that align with your skillset or college experience. • Marketing managers • Industrial engineers • Computer support specialists • Human resources specialists • Elementary school teachers
• Vocational nurses • Speech language pathologists • Industry machinery mechanics • Electricians • Sales representatives • Counselors • Ophthalmologists • Construction managers • Lawyers • Information security analysts • Physical therapists • Computer systems analysts • Physician assistants • Accountants • Health specialty teachers • Project managers • Information system managers • Management analysts • Market research analysts • Nurse practitioners • Medical managers • Financial managers • Operations managers • Registered nurses • Software developers

EXPERIENCE When you’re looking for work and trying to keep the lights on at the same time, it’s not atypical to blast your resume all over the place in hopes one of them sticks. You’re called for an interview, but beforehand you discover it’s a job you don’t really want. What to do?

chance to meet new people and make new connections, and that can lead to different opportunities.
GO FOR THE EXPERIENCE
IT’S AMAZING WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU SHOW UP
Attending job interviews can be nerve-wracking, so the more experience you have under your belt, the more confidence you’re apt to gain. Candidates are often advised to do trial runs before attending actual interviews, so if you’re invited to meet with a company you don’t think you’ll end up working for, you can use that interview as a test run of sorts.
EXPAND YOUR NETWORK
Attending the occasional needless interview, so to speak, can actually help your career in the long run because every interview you go on gives you the

A BETTER JOB MIGHT BE AVAILABLE If you go into an interview for a job you’re convinced you don’t want, there’s a good chance that you’ll walk away from that interview feeling the same way. Projecting confidence during an interview is just as important as having a solid resume. Confidence is knowing you trust in yourself. © ADOBE STOCK
Here are some tips to help you project confidence in any job interview you walk into.
TIPS BEFORE THE INTERVIEW
Interviews can be very intimidating, especially since there is a chance you will not know what you are walking in to. You should never wing a job interview. Creating confidence is performing simple tasks to help boost your morale. Start by researching the company and those who are involved in the hiring process. The research will help you understand the company, it’s employees and what your duties could be if you were to be hired. Another way to build confidence before the interview is to practice answering basic questions to yourself, a friend or family member. It’s important to know whoever your practicing with has to be upfront and honest about how you performed; it will help you analyze what works and doesn’t. Practicing like this can also help you communicate who you are and the value you could bring to the company.
PREPARE. PREPARE. PREPARE.

The Weekly Prospector
Another good way to help make yourself feel confident going into the interview is to remember the three P’s. Prepare a list of reliable references ahead of time. Make sure these references are people that can confidently answer work-related questions about your performance history. Prepare examples of your work that explains accomplishments, skills or problem solving techniques related to the position you are applying for.
The last of the three P’s is to prepare smart, insightful questions for your interviewers. You may think interviews are just meant for you to answer a potential employers’ questions but it’s just as important for you to ask them questions. You should also look to make sure the company you are applying to is a good fit for you.
DRESS FOR SUCCESS
You have to remember you are trying to make a great first impression on the people interviewing you. One of the best ways to do that is to dress for success. Plan your nicest suit or Sunday best the night before your interview. This is one of the simplest ways to get you feeling confident for your interview. If you don’t know how to dress for the interview, research the company’s attire to learn what would be appropriate.
PLAN THE DAY
Plan your whole day around your interview. Plan to wake up early and make a big breakfast before, plan what time you will leave the house to get to your interview 30 minutes early. Plan to bring copies of your resume to hand out if there are multiple interviewers in the room. It’s important every aspect of the day is planned out leading up to the interview. You don’t want any surprises or mistakes to keep you from getting the job of your dreams. The way you look, the time you arrive and the confidence you display can make a huge impact during the interview and can possibly put you over your competition.

RESUME
Your resume is your first impression to a potential interviewer. The quality of your resume can even determine whether you actually receive an interview or not. That being said, you want to make sure the first impression possible employers get from you is a good one. Here are some resume do’s and don’ts to know. SHOW, DON’T TELL You would think stating how great, accomplished and how much of a problemsolver is what interviewers want but it’s the opposite. You can lose credibility by just stating all those qualities and not showing why you are those qualities. You have to think, anyone can say they are the best but not everyone can show they really are the best. Demonstrate how you use your skills or how you use your personal qualities to accomplish a goal. One way is to use the STAR method: Situation: What was the problem or situation you faced? Task: What have you been tasked with? Action: What action did you take? Result: What was the result of your actions? Using the STAR method can help you create impactful information on your resume that will impress interviewers and job recruiters on first glance. BE IMPACTFUL Using the STAR method too much or with information that can be easily overlooked can discredit you. You want to make sure the information you share is impactful and actually important. Show recruiters why you’re so great through scenarios and problem solving rather than just stating it on your resume. Your resume should explain how you found your last place of work and how you left it, what you changed and how you impacted the company. Your resume should have strong concrete
descriptions of your experience and what you accomplished during your time there. You want to make sure it gets to the point quickly while also describing the impact you made in your experience. EXPERIENCE IS IMPORTANT Your resume should include a section designated for credible and relatable experience for the position you are applying for. You want to outline the work that will help you move forward in the job you are searching. Include information such as the company you worked for, title held at the company and any specific duties you had in your position. Make sure each experience included is related to the position you are applying for. You don’t want to place bartending or your experience as a waiter on your resume to apply for an IT position. All the information you have on your resume should benefit you in the position you are applying for. It is crucial you do not waste space on your resume with unrelated content. KEEP IT SHORT AND SWEET Recruiters today are moving fast and do not have all the time in the world to sit and read about each job experience you have had in your life. It’s important all the information you place in a resume pertain to the position you apply for. You must make sure the information is detailed but gets to the point quick. For that reason, the majority of your resume should fit onto one page. Employers today may only have a few seconds to look at the hundreds of resumes they get, so you have to make sure yours stands out at first glance. Put descriptive material on your resume.

TURNING AN INTERNSHIP
I N TO A
FULL-TIME JOB
Internships are useful ways for students to get experience in a career field. However, internships are also good tryouts for a fulltime job out of college. A company takes notice of interns who fit within the culture of an organization. The Balance Careers offers insight in how to turn the internship into a career. Most importantly, always express your gratitude for the opportunity. MAKE A GOOD IMPRESSION As an intern it is your responsibility to show your supervisor and others within the organization that you have what it takes, both personally and professionally, to fit in with the corporate culture. Taking time to learn about the mission of the organization and what it values in its employees can provide essential information on how the company identifies and defines success. DEVELOP PROFESSIONAL GOALS Identifying your professional goals and finding a rewarding internship that meets your expectations will be more beneficial to your skill development and future career aspirations than accepting just any internship that’s available. Internships are designed to prepare applicants for future jobs and careers, and finding an internship
that will help you accomplish your professional goals will also assist you in being a more competitive candidate in your future job search. DEVELOP A STRONG RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR SUPERVISOR Be sure to keep your supervisor abreast of your work and accomplishments by checking in frequently and making sure you are meeting expectations. Once you have identified your job responsibilities and you understand your supervisor’s expectations, work hard to demonstrate your personal initiative and your ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Developing professional connections as an intern will give you a head start in developing a professional network. Also, demonstrate a strong work ethic. COMPLETE PROJECTS ON TIME If you foresee a challenge with a deadline on a project you are working on, make sure you notify your supervisor and ask for any input he or she might provide or ask for an extension to get the project completed.

YOUR
C&B 5
The Weekly Prospector
Since 1976 ... THE Choice of More Businesses than ANY OTHER!
You should never walk in and wing an interview for a job you really want. You want to be as confident as you can be walking into the interview. To do that, you need to research the position and the company you are applying to. Here are some tips to help you know what and why to research.
RESEARCH THE POSITION
Researching the position you are applying for gives you an edge during the interviewing process. Knowing the jobs helps you answer those hypothetical “if you were hired how would you …” questions more effectively and also helps you develop better questions to ask your interviewer. You should never go into an interview and wing it, especially for a position you really want. Research the position on the internet, search for videos that show examples of what you may be doing or reach out to people you may know who have the same position at a different company. Make sure you know all the work the job may include.
RESEARCH YOUR EMPLOYER
It’s equally as important to research your potential employer and find out what others are saying about the company you are applying to. You want to research their culture, mission statement and company
values to see if they align with what you think are yours. After all, you will be working at this company for a long time. Make sure the company is one you are happy with and are proud to be part of. Researching your employer will also help you find out what your employer really cares about, prioritizes and will help you figure out if you want to be there. Researching also helps you determine whether the company is a right fit for you.
RESEARCH THE WORK
If you are applying for a position and are unsure of what you would be doing, it’s important to research the work the company you are applying to has done. Researching will allow you to see the impact the company has made in your community, in the world and for its employees. Does the company do meaningful work? Do they have a resume full of jobs that have impacted others positively? Are those qualities that matter to you and are important in a job you are applying for?
ASK QUESTIONS
The interview process isn’t only a chance for employers to ask you
© ADOBE STOCK
questions. It’s also a chance for you to get to know your potential employers. If you research before the interview process, it will give you a chance to show them how interested you are in the position by asking thoughtful questions. Ask insightful questions that show your interviewer you did your homework. Questions that ask more than “How long have you been in business?” or “Who are
your main competitors?” Ask questions that show insight such as “I saw your core values on your website were X, how would this position demonstrate that value?” These kinds of questions show you are more invested in being apart of the company than being an individual in the company.
