Aziazi
This handsome guy is very cuddly and very sweet. He does not get along with other cats and dogs but he is good with kids. Aziazi would need to be an indoor cat. Come in to meet this fella and help us find his perfect home.
Merlynn
She has been at our shelter since 2011 and we would love to find her a home. She is a bit temperamental and does not like being held. She is just a little overweight so she needs to be on a special diet to help her lose weight. She cannot be around kids or other animals because she has an attitude but she does love being scratched under her neck.

LO O K TO STAR

BET TER INTERVIEWS One of the most important parts of nailing a job interview is being able to weave pertinent stories about your job history into concise answers. Some find it hard to pick and choose which topics to discuss, however, and organizing those thoughts can be even more difficult. That’s where a handy answer format called STAR comes into play. STAR stands for situation, task, action and result. Here’s more about how to use it for better job interviews. WHAT IS STAR? Answers matter if you want to stand out in a job interview. Hiring managers are looking for certain traits or skills, and interview remarks help them decide if you possess them. Still, it’s not just what you say, but how you say it. To stay focused, begin with a situation that happened in the past, then explain how you contributed, the actions ultimately taken and finally the result. This format sharpens your thought process, while also underscoring your problem-solving skills, creativity, analytical ability, sense of perseverance, teamwork skills and ability to achieve qualitative results. SITUATIONS AND TASKS First, detail the “situation,” a challenge
that presented itself at work. This might be a new issue or one that’s lingered, or even something like a conflict within the staff on how to approach a problem. It doesn’t have to be a complex obstacle, and the result doesn’t have to change the world. The important part is framing how you ultimately performed when faced with a workplace issue. Next, move on to the “task,” which details the role you played in this situation. Did you take a leadership role in creating a plan, broker an agreement, or make sure deadlines were met? Here’s where you give the interviewer a sense of how you work within a larger office dynamic. ACTIONS AND RESULTS With all of the challenges laid out, it’s time to share how you helped resolve the situation. Keep this portion of your answer focused on your own contributions, rather than those of other members of your team like managers or peers. This “action” step showcases your ability to work through obstacles, smooth over conflicts and think outside the box. It’s your time to

really shine. Finally, share your “result.” Highlight positive outcomes from all of your previously explained efforts, showcasing what was accomplished. Don’t be shy about placing it all in context. If the project became hugely successful, describe it in those terms. PRACTICE BEFORE YOU GO Job interviews, by their very nature, are unplanned affairs. There may be times when you share a story because the timing
just feels right. But more often, applicants never know how, or in particular when, a question about their past experience may come up. So, it’s best to become familiar with the STAR method before you go. List your skills, qualifications and experience with a specific eye on the job you’re applying for, then practice incorporating this simple method of explanation to make sure you present yourself in the very best light.

UNDERSTANDING
APPLIC ANT TR ACKING SYSTEMS Companies today use a software called applicant tracking systems. Failing to understand how the ATS works can leave you losing opportunities even if you’re highly qualified for a position. This section will help you understand the ATS and how it works.
© ADOBE STOCK
WHAT IS ATS? ATS are used by companies’ human resources departments to quickly filter through applicants that are qualified and not. The great thing about ATS is they make the job search process easier for companies by cutting down the numbers, but make it hard for applicants because if you aren’t aware of how they work you can get filtered out. HOW DOES ATS WORK? ATS uses keywords and phrases to filter applicants resumes for companies. Applicant tracking systems keep similar resumes in one place, helping recruiters organize the applicants they are interested in and keep them all in once place. Is ATS the best way to filter through applicants? Well, it does help companies save time and organize candidates, but the truth is the ATS also can allow for top candidates to slip away if they don’t use the keywords or phrases they are looking for in resumes. Today, more companies than ever are using ATS to help recruiters find applicants easier and more quickly. The best thing for job seekers to do is to familiarize themselves with the systems and how to use them to their advantage. BEAT ATS Keywords and phrases are important when trying to take advantage of ATS. If you’ve held a job title of the position you are applying for make sure to use it again at the top of your resume. Even if you
haven’t had the job title you are applying for, add it. Doing so will help filter you through the competition. Use section headings that are friendly to ATS. Don’t get cute with headings such as “Where I’m going” or “What I’ve done.” Rather, use simple sections headings such as “Experience” or “Education” to help you be identifiable to ATS. Another way to beat the ATS is make sure you use the key phrases over and over again in your section headings, summary of skills or description. You want to make sure your resume is as ATS-friendly as possible to help you be more easily identified. This means if you are applying for different positions in different areas, then you will have to tailor that resume to fit the job you are applying for. Another way to beat ATS is to format your resume in a ATS friendly way. You can do this by placing all your information in chronological order and not using charts or graphs in your resume. You can also do the same by using traditional fonts such as helvetica, times new roman or others like them. The more simple you keep it, the better. Some applicants try to beat ATS by using white letters to use the key phrases and terms over and over again in their resume, but some ATS have been programmed to detect this in your resume. Make sure you are not cheating ATS and actively beating it with the information and experience you possess.

DEBUNKING
RESUME
The Weekly Prospector
MYTHS
Your resumes will be the first impression of you that recruiters will get, so you need to make sure your resume is impressionable. Here’s some tips to get you started: There are plenty of myths and tales when it comes to resumes. Some are rules or standards that are outdated and others are trends that have passed. We’ve got a list of those myths to avoid as you are writing your resume. Needing references on your resume is one of the myths that have become outdated. You will need references, but you won’t exactly need to state them on your resume. Recruiters will ask for references when you apply for the position. References won’t really matter until the later stages of your application process and you can just state those references to them or send them an email with them listed. Another debunked myth is about the length of your resume. The “standard” resume is said to be one page, easy to read and to-the-point. Although two of those things actually matter, the length of your resume does not. Your resume should be one page if you do not have much job experience or barely getting into the work force. It could also be one page because you are using experience for a certain position but other than
that, use two or three pages as needed. Don’t be afraid to show off your value on that resume by listing all applicable experience and achievements. Another myth we are all afraid of is that spelling errors disqualify you. It’s important you make sure you proofread your resume and correct everything you see wrong, but at the same time grammatical errors don’t mean your resume ends up tossed aside. Your resume format doesn’t matter. There is no certain guaranteed way to make your resume appeal more to people and recruiters other than what is in your resume. Your skills and experience matter over the format; today recruiters are more worried about that and your social skills. When listing job experience, most people use years to show how long they were with a company. As we said before, you want all the information in your resume to support you. You never want to leave room for interpretation. Add months to your start and end dates. Don’t let recruiters get suspicious and question your loyalty and experience.
LYOUR EVERAGING NETWORK
Many job opportunities begin through conversations with your peers. The vast majority of open positions, in fact, are never even publicized. Instead, they’re filled through recommendations in the field. Call this area of the economy the “hidden jobs market.” Here are some tips on building and maintaining a network that will take your job search into this increasingly critical area.
KNOW THE HIDDEN JOBS MARKET
You may find that seeking employment in the traditional manner – that is, setting up in-person interviews or responding to posted openings – isn’t getting the same traction that it used to. In fact, experts say only 40% of openings are ever advertised, leaving the rest to people who leveraged their peer network. But, the benefits from networking can include higher job retention rates and higher pay rates since you’d be part of a tighter-knit team.
RECONNECT WITH FORMER PEERS
Touching base again with previous bosses and co-workers is often the best first step, since they’re most familiar with your skills and work habits. Of course, this can also turn into an awkward

conversation since you may be asking for a recommendation letter or referral from someone you haven’t spoken to in years. That’s why it’s best to begin the conversation in a more casual manner and, eventually, see if there’s a way for the two of you to benefit one another.
MAKE NEW CONNECTIONS
This is the most time consuming part of leveraging your network. Sometimes a job moves you far away from your circle of peers or you might be interested in a new field. In either case, you’ll have to begin building a new network of contacts. This process isn’t difficult, but requires time and consistent effort. Try attending in-person or online job fairs and conventions where you can make scores of new contacts in the real world. Start plenty of conversations about your vision for work, successful job strategies and other related ideas. You never know what might draw peers’ interest.
PRESENCE ON SOCIAL MEDIA C&B 4
©A DOB E ST OCK
The Weekly Prospector
Today’s job seekers have more to take into account than those of the past. Social media and your social presence can greatly benefit you by showing your employer who you are before you even meet them. SOCIAL MEDIA ON A RESUME
You can meet a person and see what they are like and who they are before even seeing them in person. Social media is a double edge sword that way. But today, hiring managers use social media to search for you online and listing the links for them on your resume can make you seem proactive by inviting them to do so.
WHAT SOCIAL MEDIA TO LINK
Before you start adding every social you have to your resume it’s important to think of the most important ones that would help define your brand. LinkedIn is a platform for professionals to post and share content with others. So many hiring managers use LinkedIn to reach out to other hiring managers and professionals in their area. Twitter is another great platform that can help you define your social brand to hiring managers. Twitter is a great
platform to add to your resume because you can tweet about and share stories or trends in your industry. Other social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and YouTube are all other platforms you can include ONLY if you use the platforms to showcase your skills and personal brand.
CLEAN UP YOUR ONLINE PRESENCE
Whether or not you decide to include your social media sites on your resume, it’s always a good idea to clean up your online presence. HealthBeat November: Diabetes & Physical Therapy
Groups with a heightened vulnerability to type 2 diabetes Various factors affect an individual’s risk for type 2 diabetes. An impairment in the way the body regulates and uses glucose, or sugar, as fuel, diabetes is a chronic disease that researchers estimate affects nearly half a billion people across the globe. One recent study conducted in affiliation with the International Diabetes Federation examined global diabetes data published between 1990 and 2018. That study represented 138 countries and researchers ultimately estimated that diabetes could affect 700 million people by 2045. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that no one currently knows how to prevent type 1 diabetes. However, there are ways for individuals to reduce their risk for type 2 diabetes, which is much more common than type 1. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) notes that
various risk factors for type 2 diabetes, including age and ethnicity, cannot be changed. But knowledge of type 2 diabetes, including a recognition of which groups are among the most vulnerable to the disease, may compel people to make lifestyle choices that can greatly reduce their diabetes risk. The NIDDK notes that people are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes if they: • are overweight or obese • are age 45 and older • have a family history of diabetes • are African American, Alaska Native, American Indian, Asian American, Hispanic/ Latino, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander • have high blood pressure • have a low level of “good” cholesterol or a high level of triglycerides • have a history of gestational diabetes or gave birth to a baby weighing 9 pounds or more
• are not physically active • have a history of heart disease or stroke • have depression • have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) • have acanthosis nigricans, a condition marked by dark, thick and velvety skin around the neck or armpits Healthy lifestyle choices can help many people in these groups reduce their risk for type 2 diabetes. For example, a healthy diet and routine physical activity can help people lose weight and maintain a healthy weight, lower their blood pressure and improve their “good” cholesterol levels. Those two simple choices can remove individuals from many of the aforementioned groups with a heightened vulnerability to type 2 diabetes. More information about diabetes and diabetes prevention is available at www. niddk.nih.gov.
