The Comeback Bug An ex-Baja race car gets a second chance at life BY ADAM HURLBURT BLACK HILLS PIONEER
Pioneer photo by Adam Hurlburt
Brandon Ruby, of Belle Fourche, poses with his 1970 Volkswagen Beetle at the 2012 All Car Rally. Ruby rebuilt the former Baja racecar into a weekend driver over the past five years. His work was cut out for him; the car was involved in a massive wreck during its final race, rolling end-over-end multiple times at high speed.
B
randon Ruby’s 1970 Volkswagen Beetle has a rough and tumble past -- quite literally. Ruby acquired the car from his brother-in-law A-Jay Nagle, who raced it in the 1600cc Baja off-road class in Colorado – until he rolled the Bug end-over-end in a race, breaking his neck in the process, leaving him a semi-quadriplegic and the Bug totaled. But that horrific wreck wasn’t the end for either Nagle or the Beetle, both were miraculously given a second chance at life. Nagle gave his beloved, yet heavily damaged, racecar to Ruby about five
years ago, remembering that his brother-in-law had always been fond of the car. Nagle has since traded motor racing for wheel chair rugby, while the Beetle retired to an easier life as Ruby’s cherished project car and weekend driver. Ruby wasn’t alone in this project Scott Gross, of Belle Fourche, helped Ruby with the body and paint work on the car while Paul Kay Imports, of Sturgis, and Mark Gebbie, also of Sturgis assisted in the build up and tuning of the Beetle’s largely stock dual-port 1600cc air-cooled flat-four. Aside from a pair of paintedon cartoon eyes up front, the car retains an aggressive off-road racing look with it’s fiberglass Baja bodywork front and rear, fiberglass Baja fenders, nerf bars, exposed engine, slightly lifted suspension, polished aluminum wheels on
off-road tires and two sets of fog lights. But you won’t find a roll cage inside; it’d make family drives on sunny days a lot less comfortable. “I’ll probably never race it again,” Ruby said. “The wife and kids and I are going to keep using it as a fun toy.” And though the Beetle isn’t completely finished yet, Ruby’s two daughters are already pushing for the keys to the Beetle. “They would love to drive it,” he said, “but I think it would draw too many boys, and it doesn’t have any heat in it.”
Ruby said his favorite thing about the All Car Rally is the variety of vehicles the show attracts and the opportunity it presents to meet new friends in such a beautiful setting. As for Ruby himself, working on his Beetle has turned him into a certifiable old Volkswagen nut. In fact, he already has his next project lined up in his garage, a vintage VW-based sandrail. And he may or may not be on the look out for another vintage Beetle project for his daughters – it’s the only way he can think to keep them away from his Baja.

hen 73-year-old Gerald Keil of Belle Fourche was a kid he was a big Lawrence Welk fan, or he watched the show regularly, at least. Keil remembers the commercials – Welk standing in front one fourwheeled American behemoth or another, touting its fine features. There was one car that stood out to the boy in particular, though: a blue and white 1957 Plymouth. “I always thought, ‘boy, I’d like to have one of them,’ Keil said. And he didn’t stop thinking that until he found himself another ’57 Mopar, a Dodge Custom Royal Lancer, to be exact. Keil found his dream car 17 years ago in Missouri. “When I bought it it was in good condition, but the paint was faded and chipped. I tried buffing it out, but I couldn’t get it because I’d buff on it and the paint was so thin that it buffed through. I didn’t want to restore it, but I restored it back to original.” Keil believes the car was a special
golden anniversary edition, as the car features very rare gold paint. It was repainted its original colors by Rails Auto Body, of Belle Fourche. The original 325 cubic-inch Hemi V-8 was overhauled at Hoseths, of Belle Fourche, and the pushbutton three-speed automatic was rebuilt in Belle Fourche. Keil himself took care of all the chrome trim on the numbers-matching car. The interior is mostly unrestored original. Keil takes the car to as many shows as he can around the area, but he says he likes the All Car Rally best as he gets to see so many different types of cars there. He said, of course, that he likes to see original or restored to original spec cars the most, though. As for why Keil was attracted to this particular car so many years ago in the first place, he’s not really sure. “I like the fins. That’s what just draws me to it,” he said. “I’ve always been, I don’t know, addicted to it – why, I don’t know.”

Small car, big power BY ADAM HURLBURT BLACK HILLS PIONEER

Nineteen-year-old Zach Krueger, of Spearfish, has one of the most powerful Hondas in the region, pushing 338 horsepower to the wheels. And it’s clean to boot. Krueger did almost all the work on the car himself. Not bad for such a young enthusiast.
Z
ach Krueger, of Spearfish, has a pretty impressive ride for a 19-year-old. His 1992 Honda Civic hatchback is built to the hilt and about as clean as they come. And Krueger’s largely the man responsible for the build, which puts a different spin on that old cliché, “kids these days. …” To fall back on another analogy, “big things come in small packages” holds true for Krueger’s Civic – while it’s not every day you run across a 90s vintage Japanese hatch this clean, it’s the size of the turbocharger under the hood that sets this car apart from most front-wheel-drive imports in this region. Krueger rebuilt the car’s single-overhead-cam D16 fourcylinder himself, using “the best of the best” in order to keep
things running smoothly while a Garrett 57 trim turbo pushes 16 pounds of boost into the cylinders, which is good for about 338 horsepower and 254 foot-pounds of torque to the front wheels. The motor wasn’t the only thing Krueger did himself on this car. “I pretty much did everything,” he said. From the bodywork, to the suspension setup, to the interior, it was all Krueger. A friend did shoot the paint on the car, though. And, of course, his buddies lent him helping hands along the way. Krueger bought the car in April of 2011 from a friend in Indianapolis, Ind., and drove it back home to Spearfish in a marathon, two-day, sleepless driving session. Work started when he got the car back home. Krueger isn’t exactly sure how

Krueger said he appreciates all makes and models of cars if they’re done well, so why did he choose a Honda? He said his first car was a
Honda and that he initially picked it up because it was cheap, easy to work on and fun to tinker with. He sold that first Honda to pick up this one, which he intends to keep. Krueger took home a thirdplace award in tuner or import category at the 2012 All Car Rally, earning himself some muchContinued on page 14 …

He said he likes the All Car Rally because it draws people with all kinds of different cars from all over the area. “You don’t really get gatherings that big with people that all enjoy vehicles and respect them. It’s nice that there’s a big group of people that can get together and check out each other’s cars,” he said. “I like that there’s cars from the early 1900s all the way up to brand-new.” As for the Civic, Krueger says it’ll probably never be done. He plans to tune the car to run E85 in the near future and is hoping to get 500 horsepower out of the motor.

ric Edwards, 38, of Spearfish, wanted something different. Something he wouldn’t lose in the mall parking lot, something that would stand out on the street or at a car show. Well, Edwards accomplished that and then some. His car, “Frankenstein,” is an amalgam of six different vehicles and certainly one of the craziest Rat Rods in the Midwest. Edwards started with a ’36 Dodge sedan -- and then he lost his mind. There’s a portion of an International pickup cab on the back of the sedan body, International fenders on the front, a Dodge pickup box on the back, the frame and running gear underneath all

And then there’s the exhaust, eight stacks reaching up to the clouds. “Everybody wants to hear it, that’s one thing about it,” Edwards said. “It’s more of a unique deal, people just haven’t seen anything like it and they like to look at all the little things I’ve got on it.” And there are lots of little things on the car. Like a custom built, flat-topped skull and ribcage on the front grill, a bull skull air cleaner, wrenches holding the side view mirrors in place, antique door handles from an old house and more. Those wheels are motivated by a 454 cubic-inch Chevy V8, connected to a Chevy 400 transmission, both sourced from that old motorhome, which also donated its power steering, and power four wheel disc brakes. “That’s how the Rat Rod deal came about, it was people just putting the parts they had together into one vehicle,” Edwards said. “Rat rods are getting big. I’ve been
trying to promote them a lot; I take it (Frankenstein) everywhere I can. It’s really big all over the rest of the United States. Here it’s moved in a little bit – there’s a few in Rapid – but it’s going to come and people are going to be into this big.” Edwards’ is probably right about that, with Frankenstein taking first place in the pre-1950 category at the 2012 All Car Rally, maybe Rat Rods are going to explode in the Hills.
