Sutton Rodeo history The history of Sutton Rodeo Company parallels the growth and development of rodeo for nearly the entire 20th century and beyond. In 1926, the Edwin Sutton family began producing their own rodeos on the home ranch in Sully County. Originally the
rodeo was just a pleasant pastime when a group of people got together on a Sunday. However, Edwin saw a possibility for profit and joined with George Fairbank to begin a touring rodeo. The Depression shut down the productions and they did not begin again until the mid-40s.

James H. Sutton, Sr. took Sutton rodeo to the next stage in the 1950s when he entered into a partnership with Erv Korkow. As one of the first members of the PRCA, Sutton/Korkow stock performed at the first National Finals Rodeo at Dallas, Texas, in 1959. The company won Bull of the Year with “Baldy” in 1961 and had Reserve Champion horses “Snake River” in 1962 and “Yellow Jacket” in 1964. James was the first stock contractor to be inducted in the PRCA Hall of Champions in Colorado Springs, Colo. in 1982. In 1968, James Sutton, Jr. became a partner with his dad forming Sutton Rodeo Company and the tradition continued. Sutton Rodeo had two top horses in the nation, “Deep Water” in 1979 and “Big Bud” in 1985. Jim, along with wife Julie, took the company to the next level with a focus on production and innovation. Jim began the Black Hills Stock Show Rodeo in 1978, a rodeo nominated fourteen times for PRCA “Indoor Rodeo of the Year” winning this award in 2002 and 2003. Jim originated the Wrangler Bullfights and the Bailey Bail-Off. He is famous for his pageantry and colorful rodeo openings, including the openings at the NFR in 199596. Jim has been nominated four times as “Stock Contractor of the Year.” Jim’s wife Julie, an experienced rodeo secretary and timer, is in charge of publicity and advance promotion. Jim’s son, Steve, is co-owner of Sutton Rodeo and NFR pickup man in three decades (1978, 1981, 1986, 1993 & 1995). As the fourth generation of Sutton Rodeo

Company, Steve has been a PRCA member since 1976, and became a stock contractor in 1982. He takes great pride in the history of Sutton Rodeo, striving to breed top quality bucking stock and produce top notch rodeos. Steve particularly enjoys producing college, high school and 4-H rodeos. In 2010 Steve was inducted into the Casey Tibbs Rodeo Center as “Present Cowboy Great.” Wife Kim assists the rodeo company in the areas of timing, publicity and marketing. Steve and Kim’s children, the fifth generation of Sutton Rodeo, while reaping the benefit of over 80 years of experience are hard at work, looking at ways to continue the legacy and add their own improvements to the company. Their daughter, Amy, started timing PRCA rodeos in 2006 and helps with Sutton Rodeos Inc. marketing, her husband Steven Muller helps with the rodeo production. Son, Brent, started his career as a pickup man in 2004 and became a PRCA contestant in 2007. Son, Brice, joined the PRCA ranks in 2010. All have pursued college degrees in Animal Science and/or Business and intend to use these degrees to continue the tradition of raising 90 percent of their breeding stock. Grandson Shaden James, son of Amy and Steven starts the sixth generation! Sutton Rodeo stock has been selected to perform at 50 of the 52 National Finals Rodeos. Tomas Garcilazo
Tomas, a native of Mexico City, Mexico, was introduced at an early age to his family heritage and tradition of “La Charreria” which is a skill performed through the generations only by the Mexican Charro. Charros take extreme pride in their highly developed horsemanship and roping abilities. Tomas, a third generation Charro, has devoted his life to sharing Mexico’s National Sport La Charreria with the world. A lifetime of preparation, performances and competition continue to require total self-discipline, patience and commitment by Tomas to training and mastering the artistry of La Charreria. By incorporating a display of refined horsemanship while demonstrating maguey
Keith Isley
When Keith Isley steps into the arena as the barrel man at the Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo, he will have an extra spring in his step. The ever energetic entertainer has been widely recognized as one of the greatest entertainers in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). He joined the PRCA in 1995 and just had five rodeos booked. His status in the association grew in 1999 when he received the Specialty Act of the Year award and that became the highlight of his career. He has been nominated and won more awards, but it is going to be hard to top what happened to him in Dec 2009, 2010 and 2011. The PRCA took time to honor the sport’s top personnel and rodeo committees at their annual awards banquet. Isley has left the banquet both years as the most decorated winner of the night with three buckles – his fifth consecutive Clown of the Year, third Coors Man in the Can and
rope artistry in his performances, Tomas brings audiences to their feet applauding in appreciation of his skills. Tomas devotes countless hours to his horses who with their athletic ability and intelligence willingly execute maneuvers when asked by their friend. It is a rare and honorable experience to witness these partnership performances. Tomas has performed throughout Europe, Canada, the U.S. and Mexico. He has appeared on Broadway in New York City and toured the U.S. with the Will Rogers Follies, an acclaimed 6 time Tony Award winning show. He was a featured performer for two years at Disney’s Wild West Show in Paris, France plus the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show touring Holland and Germany. Tomas has performed numerous times for Mexico’s Presidents along with guest performances at the U.S. White House and Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Tomas resides in southern California and continues to share his legacy with audiences at rodeos, stock shows, horse shows and equine events internationally. His awards are many including the PRCA 2013, 2012 and 2007 Specialty Act of the Year award at the Las Vegas National Finals Rodeo. Tomas Garcilazo’s proficiency as a skilled horseman and rope artist defines him as one of the finest Charros presenting La Charreria today fourth Comedy Act of the Year. 2011 being the third time he won these three awards the same year. He was nominated again for these awards in 2012 and 2013, and won 2013 PRCA Comedy Act of the Year,. The native of North Carolina is quick to give credit to the rodeo committees that hire him and while he may not be a natural born entertainer he has embraced the challenge and developed routines that leave audiences wanting more. “I was really shy and the audiences were intimidating,” he said. “I finally got comfortable with face paint and baggy pants put a shield between me and the audience. I started telling jokes and when the audience reacted, I enjoyed that.” His career in the rodeo arena started as a competitor. He competed in bareback riding and bull riding as a teenager in junior rodeos. A couple years later and bullfighting caught his eye. At that time, bullfighters were expected to do comedy as well. Isley found his niche and now entertains rodeo crowds across the country as the barrel man and with his specialty acts. His ability to train animals is well known. He has learned to work the crowd and spends every second in the rodeo arena doing his best to make sure that every audience member has a good time. “After being in this business for over 30 years, I still get nervous he said. “Then when you see the people react to the things you do, it’s very rewarding.” He will be gauging the reactions of the fans in the Rapid City Civic Center during the Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo and doing his best to show them why he is one of the most decorated entertainers in the PRCA.

Loyd Ketchum
Loyd Ketchum began his career at an early age. Growing up in a small rural town in eastern Montana, rodeo was a part of everyone’s life. His mother is a barrel racer, and while traveling with his mother he developed a love for horses and rodeo himself. While attending high school and college he participated in every event except bareback riding. It wasn’t until after college that he began his bullfighting career. He began by working amateur rodeos, being both the funny man and the bullfighter. In 1987 Loyd got his PRCA card and started bullfighting with the professionals. In the late 80’s and early 90’s, Wrangler Bullfighting became one of the most popular events at the rodeos. He not only participated in the bullfights, but he

January/February 2014 audiences around the United States. From East Coast to West Coast this fan favorite has used very minimal props to create big reactions. “What makes me good isn’t’ the same old stuff ... it’s my walk and talk banter and constant interaction with the crowds” It is that unscripted personalized comedy that audiences love the most. Harrison has many awards for his efforts but none as large as being selected to work the Rodeo in 2012 the Wrangler National Finals. JJ was also a nominee for the 2013 PRCA Clown of the Year award. “I was here (in Rapid City) for the 2013 Professional Rough Stock World Finals in November and am so pumped to be here for the Black Hills Stock Show Rodeo!”
also worked as cowboy protection. One of Loyd’s greatest achievements in his career was winning the Wrangler bullfights at the NFR in 1991. From 1992-96, he was chosen to be the bullfighter at the NFR. Loyd was also very involved with RAWHIDE (Rodeo Athletes on Wellness). During the '90s, Loyd established himself as one of the best bullfighters in the PRCA, which has generated enough work to keep him busy all year round. Not only working in the PRCA, he also worked many of the Bull Riders Only events that continued on to be the PBR. Loyd’s slogan is “Bullfighting with Class and Finesse.” He consistently shows his dedication, loyalty, and support to both the PRCA and the sport of Rodeo. You can see Loyd signing autographs, public speaking and supporting his passion for the world of rodeo! On Sept. 5, 2009, Loyd fractured his T-12 vertebra and sustained a spinal cord contusion when he was thrown in the air by a bull and landed badly. A rod was inserted into his back and vertebra’s fused together. Doctors told him he would be fully recovered in six months, but four months later he was fighting bulls at the Black Hills Stock Show Rodeo. “Every day is a good day” Loyd states. “Sometimes we hit a stumbling block in life for a reason; I just look at it as another challenge.” During his time in the Guards, Colin attended South Dakota State University where he received his bachelor’s degree in Range Science. While at South Dakota State University, he met his wife Whitney. Together, Colin and Whitney, with their daughter Landree, currently ranch near Lodgepole, South Dakota. The ranch life has given Colin the natural ability to read and understand animals. This ability and experience has carried over into the rodeo arena, where Colin has been fighting bulls since 2004 and professionally since 2006. Earned through years of hard work and dedication, Colin was given the opportunity to protect the bull riders at the 2010 and 2011 Badlands Circuit Finals. The job of protecting the cowboys is not taken lightly by Colin, as he finds it an honor to be chosen by the bull riders to protect them.

Josh Rivinius
Josh Rivinius from Elgin, N.D. began his rodeo career at an early age, from riding calves and steers, to steer wrestling and bareback riding through high school. He soon found fighting bulls was his specialty. In 1997 he attended Sankey Rodeo School where he developed his skills. He provides one major job and that is cowboy protection. Rivinius says every time cowboys and bullfighters leave the arena unharmed is a victory. Some of his achievements are; 9 times Badlands Circuit Finals Bullfighter; Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo; National Western Stock Show; 2 time Tour Finale; Ram National Circuit Finals; College National Finals. When not running around bulls, Rivinius spends his time at home managing a commercial cow operation

SureShot Acts We would like to introduce you to Roz Beaton and Ginger Duke trick and roman riders extraordinaire. They have been referred to as “One of the most accomplished groups of young ladies you will see anywhere!” Their extreme speed performances defy the law of gravity. They are a vision of equine artistry, masterfully coordinated trick and roman riding that is a tribute to the western arts. Roz and Ginger hail from Decatur, Texas, and are no strangers to the arena. As trick and roman riders together they perform across North America at many world renown venues, while astonishing more than 250,000 spectators a year. Their acts consist of trick riding, and patriotic openings which are done at death-defying speeds with dazzling costumes. Their tricks are at some of the highest degree of difficulty that you will see in rodeo today with a focus on precision and polish. While riding horses at a young age Roz grew to love speed, excitement and adrenalin. She barrel raced and team roped but that was apparently not enough. She then took her riding to another level and started trick riding. After years of practice, injuries, and hard work she reached one of her top goals to become a professional trick rider. With that Roz was able to work for the world renowned Cirque du Soliel equestrian show “Cavalia.” After this life changing experience she continued on to her next goal and became part of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association in barrel racing as
well as trick riding. Roz is the only woman in the professional rodeo association to hold a barrel racing and contract act card. It is sometimes difficult but in the end rewarding to perform and compete at the same rodeo. Roz is also a professional stunt woman for film and television. Some of her credits include Open Range, Flicka, Mirror Mirror with Julia Roberts, Heartland a T.V series and many more. At the age of 3 Ginger’s family recognized advanced levels of balance and dexterity in her. They quickly sought out to hone those abilities through the sport of gymnastics. She learned dynamic body positioning, air awareness, and body control. In latter years her gymnastics evolved into cheerleading where she cheered in high school as well as on the collegiate level. In addition to her athletic upbringing, she always felt more comfortable on a horse than she did on the ground. Little did she know that her capabilities developed through gymnastics and cheerleading training could be combined with her passion for horses. She has traveled the world performing at equine events, rodeos as well as being a professional stunt rider in motion pictures the last nine years. She starts all of her own horses, as well as starting colts for others on a ranch outside of Weatherford Texas. She also enjoys participating in the Extreme Mustang Makeover challenges where she takes wild mustangs and turns them into productive trick riding mounts.

Rodney Yost is a fourth generation South Dakota rancher who has been involved with the ranching and horse customs his entire life. He's been on horseback since he was a baby in diapers on his family’s ranch, started training ponies at the age of 10, and trained his first horse at the age of 13. Since then, he has become one of the top horse trainers and clinicians in South Dakota and through-
out the Midwest. Over the past few years, Rodney has instructed many horsemanship clinics and demonstrations for all ages and riding levels. His unique training style and sense of humor has made him a sought after horsemanship clinician throughout the United States and Canada. The award of this sculpture made by Spearfish artist, Tony Chytka is given to the top Saddle Bronc rider at the Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo. The award can only be won one time and to win you must have either been born or live in South Dakota. The 14 inch sculpture is a study of a larger piece commissioned by James Sutton, Jr. The sculpture and the award were developed to honor James Sutton Sr. who died in January, 1991, and to the many outstanding saddle bronc riders South Dakota has and continues to produce. The larger piece, a half life-sized bronze statue, was unveiled at the 1992 Black Hills stock Show Rodeo. The sculpture depicts long-time friend of James Sutton, and former world champion saddle bronc rider John McBeth riding “Half Velvet,” a horse that was an NFR competitor numerous times. The horse bucked under several names; Indian Sign, Coors Lite, Half Velvet and then One-Eyed Skoal. He was considered a real money horse because he always bucked the way cowboys like ’em. The first recipients were the three top South Dakota riders in 1992, three brothers from Ree Heights. Robert, Dan and Billy Etbauer received the award for their performance in 1992 and for their overall contributions to the sport of rodeo. Past recipients include: 2002 Jesse Bail, 2003 Jeffrey Willert, 2005 Jake Costello, 2007 JJ Elshere, 2009 Ty Kennedy, 2012 Cole Elshere, and Jeremy Meeks in 2012.

BH Stock Show queen contestants named Competition for the 2014 Miss Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo will be held Saturday, Feb. 1. These contestants will be judged on personality, appearance, horsemanship, personal interview, riding ability, speeches, modeling, media interview and answering of impromptu questions. This year's contestants:
Codi Ann Miller Codi Ann Miller is the 21-year old daughter of Gary and Stacey Miller. She grew up on a ranch near Amidon, N.D. In December of 2012, Miller graduated from Black Hills State University with a business degree in Tourism and Hospitality Management; she is currently pursuing a bachelors in Marketing through Minot State University. Codi is currently the events and public relations coordinator at the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame. Miller has participated in rodeos, livestock judging, and 10 years of 4-H. “Growing up driving tractors and riding horses,” Miller said, “really gave me the morals and values of family, agriculture, and hard work.” Miller has been on the 2009 All-Star Wrangler Rodeo team, the 2010 All-Star Cinch Rodeo team, and has won two state pole bending titles in high school rodeo. She has won national honors in an Interior Design competition, competed in speech meets, and has modeled in a runway show! Miller has had the honor of representing our state as Miss North Dakota Teen USA 2009, Miss North Dakota High School Rodeo Association 2010, Miss North Dakota Collegiate America 2012, and Miss Rodeo Mandan 2013. Capturing the title of Miss Rodeo North Dakota 2014 on Oct. 13, in Minot, N.D., Miller also won the categories of horsemanship, personality, and appearance. “Being Miss Rodeo North Dakota has always been a dream of mine, so I am very proud to represent North Dakota,” said Miller. As well as traveling about 30,000 miles around the country and state promoting the western heritage, she will continue to be an advocate for the anti-bullying movement and her
platform, “Cowgirl Suzie”. Miller will represent North Dakota in the Miss Rodeo America pageant in December 2014.
Desiree Bridges The honor of being Miss Rodeo Wyoming is something that Desiree has dreamed of since she can remember. On Aug. 16, 2013, by winning the categories of speech, sales achievement, personality and horsemanship, Desiree finally took home the coveted gold and jade crown. Growing up in the shadow of the Tetons and on the plains below the Big Horns, Desiree shared time between Jackson Hole and the family ranch in Thermopolis. She is a 2013 graduate of the University of Wyoming with a bachelors degree in agricultural business management. Desiree represents the wonderful variety Wyoming has to offer. From capturing the 2009 High School All-State alpine skiing championship to taking down a record Boone and Crockett antelope, she is the true spirit of the West. Her mission is to be an accessible role model, especially for children. She wants to reach out to those who may never own a horse or a ranch, but instinctively crave the values of the West, an image and lifestyle that is badly needed in today’s society. Her goal as Miss Rodeo Wyoming is to live daily by the Code of the West and by her motto, “Character Counts!”

Sheepdogs show skills at trial RAPID CITY — Kaelene Forsyth and her 1 ½-yearold border collie Liz made their debut at the 2013 North American Sheepdog Trials, held inside the James Kjerstad Event Center at the Central States Fairgrounds. This event was part of the Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo slate. Forsyth and Liz completed their go-round in exactly four minutes. Each of the 60-plus competitors faced a 4 ½-minute time limit. “I was happy with the run,” said Forsyth, a resident of Eriksdale, Manitoba, Canada. “It was Liz’s first big trial.” Handlers and dogs moved three sheep in a figure 8 pattern. The dog guided the sheep through a center chute and pen while the handler gave voice or whistle commands. A run ended when the trainer closed the pen gate. This year the North American Sheepdog Trials will be held Feb. 6. The North American Sheep Dog Trials is a timed event competition where communication with a companion is of the utmost importance. The event requires a handler and man’s best friend, a working sheep dog, to herd a group of sheep into a pen. The handler can only give communication to the dog to accomplish this task in the fastest amount of time. A total of $5,000 worth of prize money is available to the top performers. The prelims will begin at 1 pm with the finals taking place at 7:30 pm at the James Kjerstad Event Center on the Central States Fairgrounds. Forsyth said the 2013 sheep were flighty. She added Liz handled them well but struggled with some of the voice commands. “Liz must get seasoning sometime,” Forsyth said when asked about her goals. She plans to keep advancing with the Border collie. “The dogs come with us each day,” Forsyth said. “This is their holiday.” Forsyth, 25, has worked on herding for 17 years. She and her father Campbell started the activity together, partly out of necessity. A ranch accident resulted in Campbell losing a hand. He purchased a dog to help with chores and got a puppy for Kaleen. Kaleen has worked with Liz for 1-½ months and said the Border collie can handle training pressure. Training spanned six days a week during that time.

“It requires a lot of patience,” Kaelene said with respect to training. A border collie needs stock sense and a love of work. Susan Nelson has been around sheep all her life. She attended a 1985 clinic and learned the basics. Camp Crook resident Marv Brown provided additional knowledge. “I go to two trials a year,” Nelson said. She watches the speed of other dogs at trials and learns how to keep things under control. Nelson trains her dogs from November through February. She explained that ranch work takes priority the rest of the year. Training sessions last 15 to 30 minutes, two to three times each day. Training dogs is similar to training horses, Nelson said. Work starts in a small area that increases with expertise. Nelson derives the most satisfaction from being able to help people learn about sheep herding. She requires a handler to spend one-half day with her.
