YouthWise Diversion Program, for youth referred because of alcohol or other drug experimentation, has been awarded a research grant by the United States Department of Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and NIATx. YouthWise was nominated for both awards by the South Dakota Division of Drug and Alcohol Abuse. NIATx is a partnership between the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Paths to Recovery program and SAMSHA. YouthWise has been chosen to be one of 4-8 programs in the nation which will receive consultationfrom NIATx. This consultation will focus on processes to improve programming. This is an exciting opportunity for YouthWise to continue its evidence-based programming, while improving service delivery.
Congratulations YouthWise!

PARENTS:
Your Child is Influenced by You and Your Actions by YouthWise
Perhaps the old adage, “Do what I say; not what I do,” is instructive when thinking how we, as parents and other influential adults, influence the behavior of our youth. The teen years are pivotal developmentally for establishing the person’s sense of self. Teens look for people in their lives, in the media, and among peers to emulate. This knowledge can be helpful to those adults who want to help shape the identity of a teen they love. Do you want your son or daughter or student or young neighbor to emulate a popular media personality? If not, whose behavior and values do you want them to emulate? Teens have a large capacity to “tune out” those messages they don’t want to hear or which are delivered in a nagging, overbearing way. They are much
more responsive, as are we all, to kindness, positive regard, and respect. They are also much more likely to notice if what we say matches what we do. For instance, do you instruct them to not use substances, but you yourself overuse alcohol? They will notice this discrepancy. Already sometimes suspicious of adult authority, they seem to look for dissonance between words and actions. This is a time of life, too, where teens are looking to their peers as sources to base their own life decisions. Up until this point, the youth usually “fell in line” with family values, but now, this is the developmental point where teens want to assemble their own sense of identity. That does not mean it is too late to influence your teen, but it is much harder if you have not

laid the foundation of a good relationship up to this point. It can be hard for a parent to know if their child might be abusing drugs because teens, as a general rule, become more secretive as they strive to achieve autonomy. It is good to follow the guidelines for ensuring that your teen does not access internet information that might be harmful or dangerous. It is also good to observe for any changes in your teen’s behavior that might go along with drug use; such as, spending more time alone, change in friends, drop in grades or school attendance, change in mood. It is important as well for you to monitor your medicine cabinet, as more teens are turning to prescription drugs to achieve an altered state. This can be very dangerous, especially when combined with any other drug – to include alcohol. Modeling judicious use of prescription drugs yourself is also recommended. What are some other things you can do to detect and intercept drug use? Stay informed. Be aware of teen slang for drugs, and that may be easier said then done because by its very nature teen slang changes rapidly. Currently, teens might use Dex, Robo and Triple-C to talk about cough medicine, an increasingly abused substance. Monitor your medicine cabinet; checking amounts, etc. Properly dispose of unused prescription drugs or outdated ones. Teach your children to use medications only as prescribed, and teach
them of the dangers of misuse. Communicate: A key factor in families who function well is clear, direct, respectful, open communication. That includes: Listening. Listen to your teen; be interested in what interests them. Be aware of the dangers of drug use and discuss those dangers with your teen. Studies demonstrate youth are 50% less likely to use alcohol or other drugs if their parent discusses with them the dangers. Internet: Always be aware of what your teen is doing online. Your teen’s friends: The best way to know what your teen might be doing with his/her friends is to get to know the friends. Have your house be the house the youth hang out at. Attend activities your teen attends or participates in. Checking in: With the prevalent use of cell phones, have your teen check in regularly. Know where your teen is, with whom, and what time he/she will be home. Let your teen know that you will be awake until he or she is home safely. That way you will see for yourself in what condition they arrive home. School Prevention Programs: Be aware of what the school offers to prevent drug use and attend some of those functions with your teen. Family rituals and fun: It is important that teens still be part of family activities. Perhaps you might want to look at doing new activities that interest the teen. Hiking, boating, fishing, movies, plays, sports: All are ways to have fun and interact as family members. Find out what your teen likes to do and plan that into the family fun.

YouthWise
Dear Friends, On behalf of YouthWise, I would like to thank Danielle Osloond and the entire team from the Black Hills Pioneer for their investment in our directory. Thank you for your willingness to provide this resource listing for our community and for being a mighty voice for our children and youth. Special thanks to Jodi Oliver and Kay Cox for all of her efforts with the directory listings and for being a partner in adventure. I am proud to share that the services of YouthWise have gained national attention and is currently being researched by
When recent research showed that a serious need existed in Lead-Deadwood for better early childhood education and quality, affordable child care, the community responded. The School District stepped up and created a preschool to fill the critical early childhood education gap
for three- and four-year-olds in the area. The School Board, and Dr. Dan Leikvold, are to be commended for their vision and commitment to our children and the future of our communities. But our community still lacks an essential element to continued economic growth and stability - quality child care. The Northern Hills Alliance for Children, a non-profit organization, was formed specifically to address this critical need. Working together with community partners such as Lead-Deadwood Regional Hospital, Black Hills State University, Youth and Family Services, City of Deadwood, City of Lead, Lead-Deadwood School District, Youthwise, and a variety of local businesses, the group plans to open a first-class child care facility in 2010. The center will be large enough to accommodate 60 children, have flexible hours, an income-based fee scale and provide a safe and educational environment for the children of working parents. But we can’t make this child care center a reality alone, it will take the support of the entire Lead-Deadwood community to realize this goal. An ambitious fund raising goal of $600,000 was established. And, while this may seem unattainable, the organization has already realized over half of this amount! Through grants and donations we have raised $303,000, more than half the amount needed to provide the early education and care critical to the economic growth of this area. Heartfelt thanks is extended for the generosity of the John T. Vucurevich Foundation, the Lead-Deadwood School Board, Bill Walsh, the South Dakota Community Foundation and a few residents for their generous donations. Now it is time for the businesses and other residents of Lead and Deadwood to make a contribution. As Art Rolnick, Senior Vice President of the Federal Reserve Bank has stated, “Helping our youngest children develop their life and learning skills results in better citizens and more productive workers. Compared with the billions of dollars spent each year on high-risk economic development schemes, an investment in early childhood development is a far better and far more secure economic development tool.” Projections show that employment in Lawrence County is expected to grow by more than 1,000 jobs by 2012. And, that growth could result in an equal number of secondary industry jobs. Child care is an essential element to the continued economic growth of Lead and Deadwood. Thank you to all who have helped and all who will contribute to the future of our community. Nyla Griffith, Chair

YouthWise Prevention Pays Public and private investing in addiction prevention programs yields a ten to one return for society, according to research from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the World Health Organization. YouthWise, a local nonprofit community organization that is an accredited youth drug and alcohol prevention program has been providing services to youth in Spearfish and Lead-Deadwood since 2005. As an independent, local non-profit community organization whose mission is to provide educational services to the youth of the Northern Black Hills on healthy lifestyle choices with an emphasis on alcohol, tobacco and other drug prevention, YouthWise provides transition, prevention, and diversion services to over 2,775 youth annually. YouthWise has been praised by independent evaluators and scientists who report statistically significant progress in the outcomes of YouthWise prevention, diversion and transition services for youth attending Spearfish and Lead-Deadwood Schools. “YouthWise is making substantial progress toward the goals of implementing strategies for an academic environment that fosters safe and healthy learning opportunities that are leading to successful completion of academic
goals for all students in the Spearfish and LeadDeadwood Schools” said Roland Loudenburg, a scientist with Mountain Plains Evaluation. Research supports the economic investment when money is allocated to prevention. “Society pays in many ways when our children fail,” Angie King Executive Director for YouthWise says. “Study after study finds and affirms that intervening with young people is a promising approach to preventing drug use and other problem behaviors. The service delivery of YouthWise provides no barriers for services for youth because of cost or transportation issues. The comprehensive, interactive service delivery and partnership of our school administrators awards local youth with a prevention program that starts in kindergarten.” said King. Society, she maintains, has a choice. Invest now or invest later. “We can allocate money to build more penitentiaries or we can reallocate the funds we do have and invest that money with the highest economic return and where research says it is most effective, in the play pen and early childhood.” Or more information about YouthWise visit www.youthwiseonline.org or call 717-1212.

YouthWise Earns High Marks in Fourth Year An independent evaluator has given high marks to YouthWise, a local nonprofit community organization that is accredited for drug and alcohol prevention for youth of the Northern Hills. YouthWise is in its fourth year of providing services for the youth of Lead-Deadwood and Spearfish. A scientist with Mountain Plains Evaluation, Roland Loudenburg, reports statistically significant progress in the outcomes of YouthWise prevention, diversion and transition services for youth attending Spearfish and Lead-Deadwood Schools. “YouthWise is making substantial progress toward the goals of implementing strategies for an academic environment that fosters safe and healthy learning opportunities that are leading to successful completion of academic goals for all students in the Spearfish and Lead-Deadwood Schools” said Loudenburg. Research supports the economic investment when money is allocated to prevention. “Society pays in many ways when our children fail,” Angie King Executive Director for YouthWise says. “According to the US Department of Labor, the number one reason adults are fired from a job is not poor job performance, but poor social skills. Youth who have weak social skills or aggressive (bullying) behavior are also more likely to be poor academic performers. The number one reason youth drop out of school is not because of poor academic performance, but a lack of or a negative school/peer attachment. These youth are more likely to use drugs, commit crimes and land in prison. Society, she maintains, has a choice. Invest now or invest later. “We can allocate money to build more penitentiaries or we can reallocate the funds we do have and invest that money with the highest economic return and where research says it is most effective in the play pen and early childhood.” According to research by the American Journal of Public Health and
the National Institute on Drug Abuse, fifth-grade students who took part in comprehensive, interactive school-based prevention programs starting as early as first grade were half as likely as their peers to use alcohol or other drugs, act out violently, or engage in sexual activity. “This research provides strong support for our local needs assessment on providing information and resiliency skills for youth prior to the age of onset. Locally, youth report experimentation before the age of eleven with drugs and alcohol. This research supports our desire for providing programming before most children have begun to engage in problem behaviors. Intervening with young children is proving to be a promising approach to
preventing drug use and other problem behaviors” said King. An independent survey of youth attending high school in Lawrence County over the last four years has measured a 10% decrease in youth reported alcohol use. “While the efforts of YouthWise, in concert with local law enforcement, parents, our schools, coalition members, community members, state policy and environmental strategies and school administrators has shown great progress in creating healthier behavior in our youth, locally, our youth are still reporting above the national average for drug and alcohol use. Statistically our youth do report that the number one deterrent for them in not using alcohol or other drugs is clear rules and expectations from their parents. Out of all the people in the lives of our young people, this is one clear indicator that nothing replaces the role of an engaged parent”. For more information and/or to become involved or make a donation, community members are encouraged to contact YouthWise at 717-1212 or visit us at www.youthwiseonline.org.

I Want
YOU! by Judith Kennedy, YouthWise
Perhaps few people born after 1968 remember this Uncle Sam slogan. It was the call of the draft to the military: Uncle Sam on a poster pointing his finger out with the slogan, “I want YOU.” We ended obligatory draft in America, but we should not be fooled into thinking our young people are not still being drafted. U.S. companies spend billions each year targeting our youth in their advertising. Industries know that youth have money, and those companies spend huge amounts to be competitive and get our teens’ business. The cell phones you buy, the jeans you wear, the new video game just coming out. All of these items are carried to you via advertising. Perhaps you think that you only wanted that cell phone because your friend got it, but how did that person hear of that phone?

We are all influenced as well by other forms of media: movies, websites, music videos, music lyrics. These sources sometimes portray using drugs, to include alcohol, in appealing ways. Companies hire psychologists to help them come up with themes and images that appeal to whoever they are targeting for their advertising. Advertising for teens often shows teens having fun, being included, looking beautiful; and all focused around using a certain product. One strategy effective in America is to say or imply that the viewer “deserves” this product. That strategy seems effective in alluring the American public. Websites and blogs can contain helpful information, but there is nothing to regulate that information and much of it is erroneous. Since this is a muti-billion dollar business for industry, it is not feasible to think about changing their approach. A better thing is to change our response to advertising. One way to do this is to think about a particular ad you like and consider what about the ad is appealing to you. You will essentially be doing the same thing the psychologists are hired to do for the company; you will be discovering what aspects appeal to you personally in a given ad. For instance, is the message, “everyone is using this” or “do you want to be happy
of what a child learns comes through the visual system.

and included with your friends?” or “you work hard for your money, you deserve this.” These are themes often found in advertising. To which ones are you susceptible? You can then apply this consideration to other forms of media: movies, tv, music. Is what you are seeing or hearing actually what would be likely to happen in reality? Are the lifestyles being shown ones that support what you value in life? In music it is sometimes helpful to really listen to the words to determine if the song is trying to sell you on some type of lifestyle. Perhaps casual sex, drugs? With websites you might want to do some investigating. Who sponsors the website? What is their source of information? Is it reliable? What is the purpose of the website? Why might the people who made the website want your attention? What is in it for them? Do the movies or tv shows you watch have advertising that promotes drug/alcohol use? Thinking about what influences you and why is the best way to become an informed consumer; one who thinks for him or herself. Someone who buys products based on their being a good value and supplying what we need and want; not someone who buys something just because someone else has it.

ADDICTIONS:
Something For Us All to Consider by Judith Kennedy, YouthWise Thinking about addictions can be similar to thinking of any tragedy: it can’t happen to me. That is one of the deceptive things about addictions: Any one can become addicted. All is takes is for a person to overuse an addictive substance or activity. Some substances are so addictive that a person is addicted after a single or very few uses. There are a number of definitions of addiction. Some in the field of drug and alcohol use and abuse say that a person has an addiction if they continue using a substance or doing an activity that is creating problems in their lives. Another definition of an addiction is that it is a disease of the brain that is demonstrated by a person continuing to use the substance despite harmful effects. Some think that people with an addiction
should just stop. It often seems obvious to the person who is not addicted, the harm that is being wreaked by the uncontrolled use of the substance in the life of someone they love. Using an addictive substance actually changes the brain. The person whose brain is changing is often unable to see for him or herself the damaging effects of their use. The current thinking is that for someone, who is addicted to a substance, it is difficult or impossible to “just stop”. They often need good information and support to stop using the drug. It is especially concerning for teens who use addictive substances. Current study of the brain tells us that the teen’s brain is still forming, especially the prefrontal cortex, which is the seat of reason and logic. Using alcohol or any
drug during the teenage years can disrupt the normal and healthy development of this very important part of the brain. If alcohol and other drugs are so dangerous, why does anyone use them? The reasons are complex. Some people take drugs to “numb” out, to not feel the feelings they have, to not have to handle the problems in their lives. Some people take drugs to get “high”, to feel euphoric. Some people take drugs because they believe they will be able to do something better; like be creative, make new friends, excel at sports or school. But perhaps the biggest reason people use alcohol and other drugs is to fit in. One of the most basic needs of humans is to belong. If the group of people we want to hang out with are using drugs,

we are far more likely to use drugs too. We all want to have fun, if a person perceives that using drugs is fun, they are much more likely to do so. Perhaps that was why the substance field once used scare tactics as part of their information; showing the horrible effects of crack use or lungs ravaged by cancer from smoking. Currently, the thought is to provide people with evidencebased, accurate information on substance use to help them avoid substance use, but it may be good for us to remember the extreme downside of using drugs. Using drugs causes a person to be less inhibited and sometimes to engage in high-risk behaviors they would not usually do. People using drugs can become depressed, violent, and often lose focus on the important things in life they value; like family, doing well in school, participating in activities. The tricky thing about drugs is that they register in the pleasure center of our brains. We would not even consider using drugs if this were not so. As one continues to use the drug, thinking they can control whether or not to use it, the drug changes the brain’s ability to stop using the drug. Both psychological and physical cravings increase. The speed with which this happens varies with the drug and how it is delivered into the body. But, over time and with use and overuse, the drug changes the brain. The groundwork for an addiction has been laid. All drugs interfere with the brain’s ability to communicate. This is especially dangerous for teens who are in some of their prime years to learn and to establish who they are in the world. A dangerous aspect of using drugs is that a person’s brain learns that the drug was pleasurable and wants to have it again. As the addiction process continues, the brain is further altered so that the drug which could be relied upon to be pleasurable, no longer delivers that pleasure. Not everyone who uses a drug will become addicted. But we cannot determine who will become addicted and who will not. Isn’t that a tremendous risk to take while you are trying to establish your young adult life goals and learning? Risks and Side Effects of Specific Drugs
by YouthWise Parents: Be aware of what is in the medicine cabinet. A Scary Fact: Illicit use of prescription drugs is the most common substance abuse by the youngest teens.
Alcohol: can cause liver damage, falls and accidents are more frequent and fatal, can cause memory losses. Marijuana: decreases male hormones in males and increases them in females, disrupts memory, ability to focus attention and comprehension. Marijuana is more potent than in the 1960’s and is often laced with other addictive substances. Cocaine: causes extreme highs and lows, extremely addictive, even causing person to commit crime in order to purchase the next use. Crack Cocaine: Even a few uses can cause an addiction or even kill a person. Causes hallucinations, like thinking insects are crawling on your skin. Inhalants: Cause irreversible brain damage. IQ (the measure of how well a person may be able to learn) actually plummets from inhalant use. Ecstasy: Since it is made illegally, there can be anything added to it. Tranquilizers: When used as a doctor prescribes them, these medications can help with anxiety. But over used, these medications slow heart and breathing rates, cause confusion and difficulty concentrating. When taken with alcohol, both depressants, it can be fatal. Methamphetamines: Other names used are meth, ice, crank, speed. These cause
your heart and breathing rate to increase. Use can give a person excessive energy, cause weight loss and inability to sleep. Even if one takes a stimulant prescribed by a doctor for a medical condition, for instance Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, overuse can cause serious physical damage. Motion Sickness Pills: Taken in excess, these can cause hallucinations. Pain Relief Medication: Have caused more addictions than inhalants, heroin, cocaine, and hallucinogens combined. Sleep Aids: Can cause extreme drowsiness and overuse can increase heart rate and cause death. Cough Medicine: When taken in large amounts, this medicine can cause a high; which when combined with alcohol or other drugs, can cause serious physical side effects. A concern is that only about half of teens surveyed believed that abusing cough medicine was risky. Hallucinogens: LSD, angel dust, PCP, peyote and magic mushrooms cause a person to see things which are not really there. They can also cause heart damage and death. Even years after using a hallucinogen, a person may still experience hallucinations.

Spearfish Community Coalition The Spearfish Community Coalition has been in existence since 1993 and pioneered the development of the Spearfish smoke free restaurant campaign and guide, tobacco education banners and billboards and youth training in Improv and TATU. Now as a Drug Free Community Grant recipient, the Spearfish Community Coalition will focus on development and strengthening of ATOD environmental strategies and social norming campaigns as well as coalition capacity building and development. Spearfish Community Coalition DFC goals were formulated through analysis of the local South Dakota Kids Count Data, 2007 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, Poverty Despite Work Handbook, Spearfish School District Annual Report,
South Dakota Highway Safety, Black Hills Community Needs Assessment, The Ethnic Center for Prevention Research, 2007 SD Coalition for Children Report, 2008 Institute for Educational Leadership and Evaluation student surveys, Community Readiness Surveys 2007, South Dakota Youth Tobacco Survey 2007, Key Leader interviews and focus groups, and SAMHSA Reports. The DFC goals through the Spearfish Community Coalition are: To establish and strengthen collaboration and capacity among Spearfish Community Coalition partner organizations in support of the community’s effort to prevent and reduce substance abuse among youth. To reduce substance abuse among youth in Spearfish and over time, among adults, by addressing the issues in our community that increase the risk of substance abuse and promoting the protective factors and/or assets that contribute to resiliency while minimizing the risk of substance abuse. The Spearfish Community Coalition planning efforts during the past year indicate a high degree of community readiness for targeted substance abuse
efforts to reduce alcohol, tobacco, methamphetamine and marijuana use. Through a series of monthly training sessions for community members and agency staff, our Coalition has worked to increase community awareness of substance abuse issues facing local youth. As a result, all of our Coalition members have signed Memoranda Of Understanding that indicate their readiness to assist with the implementation of work plans that comprise measurable goals and objectives. Our membership consists of individuals who provide accountability and advisory skills on community board, banks, foundations and committees. The Spearfish Community Coalition members are skilled in systemic planning and adaptability and have years of experience in planning and coordinating community and social service events. The fiscal agent for the Spearfish Community Coalition is the Family Services Center DBA: YouthWise. How to Talk to a Friend in Need of Help by Mandi Scott, YouthWise
If you are concerned about a friend, brother, or sister who is using drugs or alcohol, this article may be of interest to you. Discussing a friend’s drug or alcohol use is not any easy thing to do. It is normal to worry about how a friend or sibling will react to your concerns. There are many specific strategies that you can use to help a friend in need, and start the discussion. People with drug or alcohol problems usually defend their use or make excuses for it. However, 68% of teens said they would turn to a friend or brother/sister about a serious problem related to substance abuse (NHSDA Report). This means that when you talk, your friend will listen. Make a plan. It is important to prepare for the conversation with your friend before having it. You will want to think about where and when you will have the conversation as well as what you will say. It is a good idea to organize your thoughts and reflect on the facts of the situation. Remember that you will want to have the conversation at a time and place that is both comfortable and safe for you and your friend. Follow these steps as you plan to talk to your friend. Always remember that your friend’s drug/alcohol us is NOT your fault. Never confront your friend when he/she is drunk or high. Keep the situation calm. If your friend becomes angry, leave the situation and bring it up later when he/she is calm. If you are nervous about having the conversation with your friend, practice with someone to help you with what you are going to say. If you need help talking to your friend, don’t be afraid to seek professional and confidential help from an adult (parent, counselor, teacher).
Write a note. You may feel more comfortable writing your friend a note to begin the process of helping them. This can be a great way to start the path towards helping your friend or loved one. You may want to point out to them that you have seen some changes in their mood or behavior lately and are concerned about them. It is important to let him/her know that you are there to help and that you would like to talk to them about your concerns. If you get no response, then you will want to initiate a conversation when it is appropriate. The conversation. When you and your friend are ready to talk, choose a place where you are both comfortable and will not be interrupted. Keep in mind that how you say something is just as important as what you say. You will want to use a supportive, caring tone and be clear in what you are saying. It is important to be assertive, not aggressive. Be sure to have a balance in your conversation. Your friend may think you are just being critical of them, so try to give some examples of how you feel and the changes you see when he/she is using drugs or alcohol. For example: “You are one of my best friends, but when you are high you act differently and are not the same person. This makes me sad and it is disappointing.” Try to personalize the conversation, put in your feelings and observations. Sum it up by saying things like “You just aren’t the same anymore. I miss you. I want the old you back.” By doing this you are showing how much you care for the person and that you truly want to help them. Key talking points. I don’t want anything to happen to you, or for you to hurt yourself.

We all care about you and count on you. Your family and friends look up to you, as I do. What would we all do if you were gone? Drugs and alcohol can ruin your future… your chance to graduate, go to college, or get a job. Look at all the things you would. I want to support you….What can I do to help you? Are there any other problems or concerns you want to talk about? Let’s talk about why you use; are you feeling pressured? I love you and I won’t give up on you. If you need someone to talk to, an adult or professional, I can help you find someone. I will be here to support you and help you along the way. If you feel the friend’s problem is more than you can handle or want to try to handle, it is a good time to seek help from a parent, counselor, or other supportive adult. If you
are not sure how your parents or your friend’s parent will react, then talking to a counselor is a good idea. Listen. After you talk to your friend or loved one, ask that person what he or she thinks. What is their response to the information you have just shared with them. Listen to your friend. Do not interrupt them to make a point of your own, really listen. Being a good listener is just as important as talking to them. Let them know you are listening by nodding your head in reassurance or make short comments that show you understand and hear what they are telling you. If say they want to stop using drugs, offer your help. Ask if they want to see a counselor who can help during times like these. Keep at it. Talking to your friend is a continuous process, not a onetime conversation. Before you end your first conversation you may want to decide when you
will check in with each other to talk about how things are going. This is important even if your friend has already decided to seek professional help, you are still a support for him/her. Remember that you cannot solve your friend’s problems, and you may not have the power to convince your friend to change his or her habits. If you have tried your best and you run out of options, you need to think of your own best interest. You may want to seek support from other friends or trusted adults. It may also be important for your own well-being to limit the time you spend with your drug or alcohol-using friend. They may also be putting you at risk. Big Brothers Big Sisters Ready for Kick Off by Jodi Oliver
Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Black Hills is ready to kick off the “mentoring” season in Spearfish. The program’s expansion is currently progressing well as Northern Hills office is seeing an increase in referrals and in volunteers. Big Brothers Big Sisters will start by implementing two programs in Spearfish in this inaugural year: the traditional community mentoring program, and “Campus Kids”. The traditional community mentoring program occurs when a Big Brother or Big Sister is matched with a Little Brother or Sister. Once the mentoring match is made the pair will meet once a week for two to four hours to enjoy an activity that will be fun and engaging for both of them. The match is supported by the program in terms of helping to identify activities and mutual interests as well as doing monthly updates to ensure there are no problems that need to be addressed. The Campus Kids program is a once a week activity in which volunteers from Black Hills State University come to lead team building and leadership development activities, tutor if needed, and eat with the younger students . The younger students who will participate in the program are brought in from the waiting list of referrals, so that no child or youth that is referred is not engaged in a mentoring relationship for an extended period of time. Big Brothers Big Sisters has seen significant success in preventing substance use and abuse as well as helping children and youth to succeed in the classroom. Studies have shown that out of the children who participate in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program 46% are less likely to begin using illegal drugs and 52% are less likely to skip school. With successes like this, the expansion of the program into the Northern Hills is even more exciting as it provides a great opportunity for the children and youth of our community as
well as for our adult volunteers. The volunteers, or mentors, who will be participating in the program will be thoroughly screened to ensure that the children and youth who will be participating in the program will be in a safe, positive environment. The prospective mentors will go through two interviews, one in the office and one in the mentor’s home, and they will also go through a background check. The process of making a match takes about eight hours, and then the mentor will be on their way to making a positive impact on the life of a child. The process of becoming a mentor begins by visiting the Big Brothers Big Sisters website, www.bigmentors.com, to fill out an application. Any child or youth, in 2nd through 9th grades, are welcome to participate in the program. There are no eligibility requirements. The referral process also starts by visiting the website, www.bigmentors.com, to fill out a client application. Once the application is set the interviewing starts with the parent/guardian to decide what type of mentor would be the best fit for the child. While the Northern Hills Office is an extension of the Rapid City office, there is an advisory board in place in the Northern Hills. The advisory board has seven members, including Nancy Wietgrefe, Michael Trump, Alecia Hoffman, Danielle Osloond, Lori Jeffery, Holly Stillson, and Keith Wintersteen. Big Brothers Big Sisters is currently seeking “Bigs” and “Littles” in the Northern Hills. If you’d like to make a positive difference in the life of a child or know a child who could use a positive influence please visit our website www.bigmentors.com or contact Jodi Oliver at 605-569-0828 or nhbbbs@bigmentors.com
